For an estimate of your cost, quote your vacation online and find out for yourself how affordable this unique adventure is with The Moorings.
What kind of yacht should I charter? That all depends on you. Your Moorings vacation can be tailored to fit your party and your preferences. We offer Bareboat Sailing yacht charters, Powerboat charters, and all-inclusive Crewed charters.
How many people are you traveling with? Are they couples traveling together or do you need single cabins for some guests? How much space and comfort would you like? Whatever your needs, The Moorings is sure to have a yacht that is right for you. Choose from a fleet of monohulls and catamarans ranging from 37 to 58 feet, with 2 to 6 cabins. Visit our Yacht page for a complete listing of models.
Will I need a skipper or will I be qualified to captain my own yacht? Depending on your sailing experience, you may already be qualified to skipper a Moorings yacht. Simply fill out our online sailing résumé . We will review your experience and tell you what you are currently approved to charter. You’ll also have the option of using our complimentary Friendly Skipper program. This service provides an experienced skipper who will accompany you for the first afternoon to familiarize you with the operation of your yacht (not available in the USVI).
What if I am not qualified to skipper our yacht? If you do not have the experience required to sail the yacht yourself, or if you would just like to sit back and relax and let someone else do all the work, then you can hire a Skipper for your Bareboat Charter. With years of sailing experience and a wealth of local knowledge, our Skippers will be the ideal guide to your bareboat charter vacation. Learn more about hiring a skipper. You can also take a class with Offshore Sailing School, the Official Sailing School partner for The Moorings, to get qualified. Learn more about available Sail and Power courses.
What is the minimum age required to charter a yacht with The Moorings? You must be 18 years or older to charter with The Moorings.

Are pets welcome? No, only service animals with proper paperwork are allowed for an additional fee. Please call your vacation planner for more information.
What should we tip our crew? The quality of service should dictate the gratuity. As a guideline, we suggest an average of 15-20% of the total charter cost for Crewed Yacht Charters, and 15-20% of the daily Skipper fee for Skippered Bareboat Sailing or Power Yacht Charters.
What type of clothing should we pack? The keynote is simplicity. Casual and breezy beach attire is certainly the order of the day on deck, though for evenings ashore, slacks or a sundress are appropriate. Rubber-soled shoes, as opposed to hard soles, are recommended aboard our yachts, so wear boat shoes or tennis shoes. You may find aquatic shoes convenient for beachcombing. Above all, protection from the sun is vital – lots of suntan lotion, wide-brimmed hats or sailing caps, and loose-fitting cotton cover-ups. For cool or windy evenings, a windbreaker comes in handy.

Capt. Dawson looks forward to having you on board his 37-foot Freeman.
Dawson is from Ocean Springs, MS, and has been fishing all his life. He’s been with MGFC since 2015.
“I grew up fishing in the Gulf of Mexico and enjoy sharing that experience/knowledge to take people from all over the world on a fishing trip of a lifetime and a good time right here in the gulf,” says Captain Wells.
“You never know what you’re going to see being a charter Captain in the Gulf of Mexico. There are so many different varietys of species of fish that you can target here and the fishing changes everyday. So you never really know what adventure you will be going on. And it makes me enjoy being a charter Captain everyday.”
His favorite time to fish is later in the year October to December because the tunas are at big in size, the wahoos start showing back up and the mahis are still around.
One of the things he enjoys most about fishing from Venice, LA is the fact we can target so many different species. From Snapper, Grouper, Amberjack, and cobia to Tuna, Swordfish, Wahoo, and Mahi Mahi. “So whatever the people are wanting to target that day I’m all for it and we will try our hardest, catch a lot of fish and have a great time while doing it.”
Anglers come to the Gulf for Yellowfin Tuna, Mahi Mahi (Dolphin), Cobia, Wahoo, varieties of Grouper, Red Snapper, Blackfin Tuna, Amberjack, Shark, and marlin. Capt. Dawson has experience putting customers on all those fish.
Offshore charters with MGFC include — but are not limited to — fishing the permanent oil rigs, which act as reefs for marine life, fishing the floaters, which are moving oil platforms, fishing the Lump, or trolling behind the shrimp boats when in season.
Book online with Capt. Wells. You’ll be hooked.
Fish with us one day offshore, then one or two days inshore, and don’t forget … we have lodging, too.

Captain Colin Byrd – Mexican Gulf Fishing
$2,300 + fuel per day – Book a trip with Captain Colin Byrd on a 42ft Freeman
Captain Colin Byrd first fished as a 5 year old boy, and says he was charged by the experience on the very first cast. He caught his first sailfish at he age of 12 while on a family trip to Mexico, and says he knew from that moment he would be a life long fisherman, and that offshore was “his thing. “
Colin is a charter captain with a 50-ton Masters license. He’s fished as a 1st mate, and as a captain on many charter boats and private yachts. He’s a seasoned vet of the MGFC team with years of experience at the helm, and in blue water.
Fish with Colin Byrd, and you’ll see what it means to go the extra mile. Never content to shrug shoulders, or stop. Colin says, “I’m here for you. That is what I do. We’ll fish, we’ll keep an open mind, and we’ll come back with broad smiles on our faces from having good camaraderie and a great day at sea.”
Trips with Capt. Colin are $2,300 + fuel per boat, per day. His 42ft Freeman catamaran holds up to six passengers.
Note: A 4% processing fee is added to all credit card orders. Deposits must be made online, and paid by credit card. Balances on each trip may be paid by cash or credit card. Pay your captain, day of the trips, at the dock.
Fuel averages $900 per day.
Fees include the guided trip plus all fishing tackle, bait, ice for the fish box on the boat, and fish cleaning at the dock
Colin’s favorite trips come in two styles. The first is when he has a defined target by his customers, and they’re able to nail that target to the wall. The 2nd is when things go slightly awry. Fish as slow that day, target species just aren’t there, perhaps he has bad weather to avoid, but with quick thinking and an open mind, he puts customers on fun fishing, and with necessity being the mother of invention — what once looked bleak comes up all action and overflowing ice chests.
Captain Colin’s 3 tips for offshore success:
- be prepared and pay attention to details
- keep an open mind and remember to have fun
- live life AND live it to the fullest
Colin’s promise to anglers is this, “you let me worry about the first one above. I am 100% dedicated to being on the water. I fish weekends so you can come down on the days most convenient to you. Sit back, stand up, joke around and have fun. Keep an open mind and go with the flow of things. I’ve got the details covered, just listen up and live life through the thrilling experience of a blue water charter. “
His favorite species include: yellowfin tuna, wahoo in the winters, and big blue marlin.
In fact, ask him about that one Blue Marlin from few years ago at the World Billfish Championships.
Book now with Colin Byrd, and experience the best the Gulf has to offer.

Best Capital One Credit Cards of November 2021
Here are the top Capital One credit cards. Click the card name to read our review. Before applying, verify details on the issuer’s website:
CONSUMER CREDIT CARDS
Our pick for: Travel rewards
The Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card is probably the best-known general-purpose travel credit card, thanks to its ubiquitous advertising. You earn 5 miles per dollar on hotels and car rentals booked through Capital One Travel and 2 miles per dollar on all other purchases. Miles can be redeemed at a value of 1 cent apiece for any travel purchase, without the blackout dates and other restrictions of branded hotel and airline cards. The card offers a great sign-up bonus and other worthwhile perks. Read our review.
Capital One Venture X Rewards Credit Card
Our pick for: Travel portal benefits
Capital One’s premium travel credit card can deliver terrific benefits — provided you’re willing to do your travel spending through the issuer’s online booking portal. That’s where you’ll earn the highest rewards rates plus credits that can make back the bulk of your annual fee.
Our pick for: Flat-rate cash back
The original 1.5% flat-rate cash-back card still holds its own in a now-crowded field. The Capital One Quicksilver Cash Rewards Credit Card offers a compelling combination of a good rewards rate, redemption flexibility, sign-up bonus and introductory 0% APR period (then an ongoing variable rate of 14.99% – 24.99%). Read our review.
Our pick for: Dining/entertainment rewards
If a night out is more than a once-in-a-while proposition for you, consider the Capital One Savor Cash Rewards Credit Card. You get a best-in-class cash-back rate on dining, entertainment and eligible streaming services, plus bonus rewards at grocery stores. The sign-up bonus is one of the best you can get on a cash-back card. Read our review.
Our pick for: Dining/entertainment rewards + no annual fee
Love the night life but dead-set against paying an annual fee? Consider the Capital One SavorOne Cash Rewards Credit Card. It pays a lower cash-back rate on dining and entertainment than the regular Savor card, but the rewards are nevertheless quite good. The sign-up bonus is smaller than on the annual-fee version, too, but it’s still solid. Read our review.
Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
Our pick for: College students seeking bonus rewards
Among cards aimed at students, the $0-annual-fee Capital One SavorOne Student Cash Rewards Credit Card is near the head of the class. It earns 3% cash back in a variety of popular spending categories for students — including dining, entertainment purchases, eligible streaming services and grocery store purchases — which is a better deal than you’d find on many cards requiring annual fees or sterling credit. Read our review.
Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card
Our pick for: College students seeking simple rewards
The Capital One Quicksilver Student Cash Rewards Credit Card gets high marks for cards in its class, thanks to its $0 annual fee and its no-fuss rewards rate: 1. 5% cash back on all purchases. That’s as good a combo as you’d find on even a lot of non-student cards. Read our review.
Our pick for: College students seeking unique incentives
The Journey Student Rewards from Capital One gives newcomers to credit a powerful incentive to develop responsible habits. You earn cash back on every purchase, but when you pay your bill on time, the cash-back rate for that month gets a boost. Read our review.
Our pick for: Fair credit
You don’t get rewards with the Capital One Platinum Credit Card, or a sign-up bonus or a 0% period. But if you’ve got fair credit and you need a card you can use to build credit without paying an annual fee, it’s definitely worth a look. Read our review.
Our pick for: Fair credit + rewards
This card for people with fair or “average” credit pays the same cash-back rate as the regular Quicksilver card, which targets people with excellent credit. The key difference is that this version charges an annual fee while the regular one does not. Read our review.
Our pick for: Poor credit
The Capital One Platinum Secured Credit Card requires a security deposit, as do all secured credit cards. But while most cards require you to put down a deposit equal to your credit line, this one allows some qualifying applicants to get a $200 credit line with a deposit of $49 or $99. Further, you can be automatically considered for a higher credit line with no additional deposit in as little as six months. Read our review.
Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card
Our pick for: Poor credit + rewards
The Capital One Quicksilver Secured Cash Rewards Credit Card offers an impressive combination of features for those with poor credit. A deposit is required, but in exchange you get a $0-annual-fee card that reports to all three credit bureaus; an automatic credit limit review after six months; and a possible upgrade path to an unsecured Capital One card. Oh, and 1.5% back on all purchases, which equals what you’d find on many unsecured cards. Read our review.
BUSINESS CREDIT CARDS
Our pick for: Small business cash back
The Capital One Spark Cash Plus is an excellent option for business operators whose expenses don’t fall into the bonus categories on other business credit cards. You get a high, flat rewards rate on every purchase, with no limit to how much you can earn. Just make sure that you can pay off your spending in full each month, as this is a charge card that doesn’t let you revolve a balance. Read our review.
Our pick for: Small business cash back + no annual fee
For flat-rate cash back without an annual fee, look to the Capital One Spark Cash Select – $500 Cash Bonus. The sign-up bonus and rewards rate are less than the Capital One Spark Cash Plus. But because there’s no annual fee with the Capital One Spark Cash Select – $500 Cash Bonus, smaller spenders might still come out ahead. Read our review.
Our pick for: Small business travel rewards
The Capital One Spark Miles for Business is basically a business version of the popular Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card. You earn 2 miles per dollar on all purchases, and miles can be redeemed at a value of 1 cent apiece for any travel purchase, without the blackout dates and other restrictions of branded hotel and airline cards. The card offers a great sign-up bonus, too. Read our review.
Our pick for: Small business travel rewards + no annual fee
The Capital One® Spark® Miles Select for Business offers a lower rewards rate and a smaller bonus offer than the regular Spark Miles card, but there’s no annual fee, either. Smaller spenders might come out ahead compared with the regular version. Read our review.
Our pick for: Small business fair credit
The rewards rate on the Capital One® Spark® Classic for Business isn’t going to wow anyone, there’s no sign-up bonus and the APR is high. What makes this card valuable is that it’s available to business operators with fair or “average” credit, who don’t have a lot of options in business credit cards — especially with no annual fee. Read our review.
