How does G-String push the boundaries of Half-Life 2 modding. What are the positive and negative impacts of this ambitious project on the modding community. Why is G-String both admired and criticized by players.
The Ambitious Scope and Scale of G-String
G-String stands out as a monumental achievement in the Half-Life 2 modding scene. This total conversion mod, created single-handedly by a young woman, pushes the boundaries of what’s possible within the Source engine. Its sheer size and scope are staggering, rivaling or even surpassing many full commercial games in terms of playtime and content.
How long does it take to complete G-String? While exact playtimes may vary, most players report spending 20-30 hours to finish the mod – a testament to its expansive nature. This extensive runtime allows for deep world-building and a complex narrative that unfolds across diverse environments.
Reimagining the Half-Life 2 Universe
G-String takes the familiar Half-Life 2 framework and transforms it into something entirely new. While traces of the original game’s DNA remain, such as enemies reminiscent of manhacks, the vast majority of assets, locations, and gameplay elements are custom-built for this new dystopian world.
What makes G-String’s world design unique? The mod features incredibly detailed and often bewildering environments that push the Source engine to its limits. From cramped urban dystopias to surreal dreamscapes, G-String crafts a visual identity all its own. This attention to environmental storytelling and atmosphere helps immerse players in its dark future setting.
Technical Achievements and Innovation
Beyond its visual design, G-String incorporates numerous technical innovations. The mod likely employs advanced scripting, custom shaders, and clever optimizations to achieve its ambitious scope within the constraints of the aging Source engine. For aspiring modders, studying G-String’s methods could provide valuable insights into pushing an engine beyond its perceived limitations.
The Impact on the Modding Community
G-String’s release has had a significant impact on the Half-Life 2 modding scene, sparking both admiration and controversy. Its ambition serves as an inspiration, showing what dedicated individuals can achieve even with aging tools. However, it also raises questions about the sustainability and expectations for mod projects.
Raising the Bar for Mod Ambition
Does G-String set unrealistic expectations for other modders? While its scope is undoubtedly impressive, there’s a risk that players might come to expect similar levels of content from smaller mod teams. This could potentially discourage newcomers to modding who feel they can’t match such lofty standards.
Blurring the Lines Between Mods and Games
G-String’s scale and original content push it beyond what many traditionally consider a “mod.” This blurring of lines between mods and standalone games raises interesting questions about how we categorize and value these projects. Should ambitious mods like G-String be held to the same standards as commercial releases?
The Controversial Reception
Despite its technical achievements, G-String has received a mixed reception from players. While many praise its ambition and creativity, others have criticized aspects of its design and gameplay.
Pacing and Clarity Concerns
A common critique of G-String centers on its pacing and player guidance. The mod’s vast, labyrinthine levels can sometimes feel overwhelming or confusing. How does G-String balance exploration with clear player direction? This remains a point of contention, with some players relishing the challenge while others find it frustrating.
Narrative Complexity
G-String weaves a complex, often surreal narrative that doesn’t always prioritize clarity. While some players appreciate the enigmatic storytelling, others find it obtuse or difficult to follow. This divisive approach to narrative demonstrates the challenges of balancing artistic vision with player comprehension in game storytelling.
Learning from G-String’s Successes and Shortcomings
G-String offers valuable lessons for both modders and game developers. Its ambitious scope showcases the potential of passionate creators, while its reception highlights the importance of balancing creativity with player experience.
Embracing Creative Vision
G-String’s unwavering commitment to its unique artistic vision is both its greatest strength and a source of controversy. How can developers maintain their creative integrity while still crafting an accessible player experience? G-String demonstrates that there’s no easy answer, but that bold artistic choices can lead to truly memorable experiences.
The Importance of Playtesting and Feedback
Some of G-String’s more polarizing elements might have benefited from additional playtesting and player feedback. This underscores the value of iterative design and community engagement, even for solo developers pursuing a specific vision.
The Future of Ambitious Modding Projects
G-String’s release raises intriguing questions about the future of large-scale modding projects. As game engines become more complex and player expectations rise, will we see more projects of this scope?
Sustainability and Burnout
The years-long development of G-String by a single creator is both impressive and potentially concerning. How can the modding community support ambitious projects while promoting sustainable development practices? Addressing issues of burnout and managing scope will be crucial for the health of both modders and their projects.
Collaborative Approaches
While G-String showcases the potential of a singular vision, future large-scale mods might benefit from more collaborative approaches. Bringing together multiple talented modders could allow for ambitious projects without placing the entire burden on a single creator.
G-String’s Legacy in the Modding Landscape
Regardless of individual opinions on its merits, G-String has undeniably left its mark on the Half-Life 2 modding scene. Its ambition and scope will likely influence future projects, both as an inspiration and as a cautionary tale.
Inspiring New Creators
G-String demonstrates that even aging game engines still hold untapped potential. This could inspire a new wave of modders to push boundaries and experiment with ambitious ideas, potentially breathing new life into modding communities for older games.
Evolving Player Expectations
How will G-String shape player expectations for future mods? While its scope may be an outlier, it could raise the bar for production values and original content in the modding space. This could lead to both exciting innovations and potential challenges for smaller mod teams.
Conclusion: A Milestone in Modding History
G-String, with all its ambition, controversy, and technical achievement, stands as a significant milestone in the history of Half-Life 2 modding. It showcases both the incredible potential of passionate creators and the challenges inherent in balancing artistic vision with player experience.
Will we see more projects of G-String’s scope in the future? Only time will tell. However, its impact on the modding community is undeniable. G-String pushes the boundaries of what’s possible within the constraints of mod development, inspiring future creators while also prompting important discussions about sustainability, design philosophy, and the evolving relationship between mods and commercial games.
Ultimately, G-String serves as a testament to the enduring creativity and passion within the modding community. Whether viewed as a flawed masterpiece or a cautionary tale, it will likely be remembered as one of the most ambitious and polarizing mod projects of its era.

G-String: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
I’m torn. Torn between incredible admiration for such amazing work and frustration & disappointment with the outcome.
I started to write an article about how I felt G-String was bad for the community but then I realised that only presenting the negative aspects was unfair.
This article is not a review, that is on the Mod itself, but of course, I will be echoing some of the points I made. This article discusses the wider impact of the mod. It’s a personal view and as such you may disagree.
Now, with that basic description out of the way, why is the mod good for the modding community.
The Good
If you haven’t played G-String then you probably can’t imagine how large the mod is. It is the longest mod I have ever played and probably longer than many games. Not only that it has been made by one young woman.
In addition, it’s a total conversion with almost nothing left of Half-Life 2. I say “almost” because it’s clearly built on top of the basic structure. For example, there are flying enemies that very closely resemble manhacks.
Please don’t think that is an attempt at a veiled criticism, it’s not. There’s only so much that can be done if you use somebody else’s game engine.
The environments are some of the most detailed and confusing I have ever played. The attention to detail is incredible and I am sure the technical aspects behind the curtain offer some very interesting ideas.
Now, I don’t know exactly how long I took to finish the mod but it was easily in excess of 15 hours. That’s 15 hours of free video gaming.
The author creates a compelling setting and everything about the mod adds to that setting. Goodness knows how many models and textures she had to create. And the important thing is that they all “fit” the theme perfectly.
It seems she was influenced by Blade Runner but with an Asian twist. Somebody should make a TV documentary about this mod because it really does set new standards in some areas.
So why isn’t it actually being heralded everywhere? Well, that’s what I talk about next.
The Bad
When new modders see and play G-String I have no doubt they will be incredibly motivated. Seeing what one person can do with such dedication and commitment can only inspire.
And that’s the problem. For every “G-string-type mod” released there must be hundreds started and never finished.
Mods like this make modders believe they can also create something as spectacular as this and the reality is they can’t. It takes a very special type of personality to spend 5 years behind closed doors making a mod of this depth.
By releasing something so big the author has given hope to many modders when instead they should be creating smaller more manageable mods. Learning from each release and improving as they get more experience.
They are too many over-ambitious mods started already and G-String may have started a few more.
Next, is the fact that there are a lot of things wrong with it. I know the mod was beta tested but I doubt it was tested early and often. I have the feeling that it was tested when it was nearly finished and I also believe that not all testes finished it.
I took months to finish it. Yes, my playing schedule is limited but a beta tester would have had to test it over and over again. By releasing the mod in the condition it was in the author has burnt her bridges. NO WAY am I going to replay the mod with the patch and I doubt most will.
I would love to know how many testing hours goes into one hour of gameplay for Valve games. Hundreds I would guess. Sure, that’s hard for mod makers to do and for some stupid reason they believe that releasing mods as alphas and betas is the same as getting proper beta tests.
The mentally of normal players is not the same as beta testers. How many normal player replay sections over and over again? Almost none I would guess.
There used to be a phrase in the modding community that was bandied about by all. It goes “Release early and often.” It’s wrong. It should be “Test early and often”. Releasing is NOT the same as testing.
Personally, I liked the slightly confusing routes – too often we only have one clear way to go and that takes the fun out of exploring. Of course, the other extreme of maze-like areas is no fun either, but for some reason I didn’t have too much trouble finding where to go.
There were other things that got the mod negatives reviews, mine included; the widescreen format and the lack of crosshairs are the most obvious examples.
Essentially, the author created something amazing but with serious flaws. Flaws that should have been addressed very early in the design process.
The Ugly
Never, ever underestimate the impact of beauty on a project. Do you honestly think that the smartest women get to be on TV? No, it’s generally the hot ones. Yes, they may be good at their job but I guarantee that if they were ugly they wouldn’t be on the show.
The same goes for games and mods. Being in a depressing story, setting or environment fosters that emotion. There’s only so much dystopia I can take before I become depressed.
At least with other mods or games I had a sense of optimism. I kinda knew that at some point Good would triumph over Evil. With G-String the greys and drab textures bring me down. There seemed to be no end to my suffering. No light at the end of the grey tunnel.
That’s one of the reasons I couldn’t play for too long – it was just too depressing.
From a technical point of view the levels and vistas within the game are amazing but players shouldn’t be expected to see the art and skill from what is presented.
There’s no doubt the setting has been carefully staged and the posters and environmental design all add to that setting, but I believe that the author has made a common modding mistake and forgotten to look at things through the players eyes.
If she hadn’t created the mod, would she honestly want to spend 15 hours playing in such an emotionally draining setting?
Final Words
Many people asked how I could have made this my “Mod of the Year 2011” when it was so frustrating to play and look at. And I have to admit, I asked myself the same question.
The answer I keep coming back to is that if you put aside those few negative points, what you are left with is an amazing piece of work. Something that even at one tenth its size many modders would have been happy with calling their own.
To not have recognised this work would have been a travesty. But here is the crux.
i didn’t actually enjoy playing it that much!
I wish to headcrab I hadn’t have heard of it until after the patch was released, assuming the patch fixing the things that frustrated me.
There’s little justice in the real world and our microcosm of modding is no different. The fact that this mod has gt so little publicity outside PP and ModDB is a shame, but it shouldn’t take articles like this to convince the playing public of the merits of a mod – the mod itself should do that – and G-String didn’t.
I suspect that modding historians will cite this mod as one that if the author had tweaked her process just a little she would have been hailed as the new Adam Foster.

Bubble Shooter – an all-time classic
One may think that old, simple games will slowly fade in relevance in a time like this with continuously improved graphics in extraordinary games with magnificent storylines – however, that is not the case. New games are not here to replace game classics like Bubble Shooter, but they function as providers of an alternative. A classic does not become a classic for arbitrary reasons, but they are here to stay because the concept of the game is simple yet challenging. It is rather simple to play Bubble Shooter, but the winning conditions changes from game to game and it forces the player to think independently according to the actual display screen. New popular games with exceptional storylines and strong graphics usually only provide one way of winning the game; in order to win, you have to follow an exact path that will eventually lead you to your final destination. Regardless of how many times you play the game, the objective and the path towards it will remain the same. In other words, you get all the cool in-game concepts in high graphics, but once you finish, you are actually done. There is no alternative way to play and win the game, but this is not the case when you play Bubble Shooter.
Bubble Shooter can be played a thousand times and not even two games will be alike. You are forced to adjust your winning strategies to each game, and this is why the game is both simple and complex at the same time. The basics of the Bubble Shooter game are very simple and it may occur almost childish in design, but do not let yourself be fooled. It is easy to play, but difficult to master and it is for this exact reason that Bubble Shooter is recognized worldwide as an all-time classic.
The history of Bubble Shooter
Bubble Shooter originally derives from Puzzle Bobble 2, which was created by Taito Corporation back in 1995. Puzzle Bobble 2 was and still is a popular arcade game, and in 2001 the popularity of the game rose to unparalleled heights by becoming available as a game on PC – named Bubble Shooter as we know it as today. The game was back then developed and published by Absolutist. Divergent versions of the game had already been on the market for some time, but Bubble Shooter, the game as we know it today, was now operational for the player to install and play at home.
Bubble Shooter was created as a game for children, but the mechanics of the game also attracted a more mature player pool. The simple concept of shooting a bubble/ball in a certain direction and the name “Bubble Shooter” are not exactly elements that would seemingly attract adults, but it was rapidly acknowledged as a game having rather deep and complex mechanics despite its immediate simplicity. Therefore, the natural development was to design the Bubble Shooter game for not just PC and arcade halls, but also other electronic gaming devices. The simple game design made the game easily accessible and playable on almost any device. No long introductions, high graphic requirements and complex character interaction – just simple, challenging entertainment in its purest form. Nowadays the game can be found in many different shapes, modifications and designs on all possible electronic gaming devices, but the concept remains the same.
Game design and layout
When you play Bubble Shooter for the first time, you will encounter a box in which multiple tiles of differently coloured bubbles/balls/balloons are placed. This is the default setting of bubbles, that you will have to play accordingly to, and the outcome of the game of Bubble Shooter depends on how you chose to aim and hit your own coloured bubble on these lines. In the bottom of the box, you find your own bubble which you have to aim and click in the direction that seems most appropriate in regards to eliminate as many bubbles as possible. When shooting a bubble, an arrow will occur in the line of your mouse cursor and it should therefore be fairly easy to execute correctly. Next to the bubble, you are about to hit, you will see your upcoming bubble. This way you will always be one step ahead and you can play according to the next bubble waiting for you in a game of Bubble Shooter.
To the right side, you have your game options. In the game options, you can choose to restart the game, search for help on how to play Bubble Shooter, change game settings such as board colour, difficulty, saving mechanics and sound volume. It is easy to modify the game into the way you like it without changing the nostalgic Bubble Shooter experience. Here, you are also able to see your personal high scores. Once you get a hang of it, it is very easy to improve and by saving your personal records, you always have something to compare yourself to. Use your former results as a motivator to become a better Bubble Shooter player. Everything naturally becomes more fun the better you are at it – even if it just a simple video game. It is not exactly defined as a classic multiplayer game, but you can make it one by challenging and competing against your friends and family. Even without a material prize, getting a higher score than your friend can sometimes be worth more than money.
How to play Bubble Shooter
As mentioned, Bubble Shooter is a very easy to game to learn. The game rules are very basic, and therefore the game fits all ages as long as you know how to click a mouse, are able to distinguish the colours, and have some sort of logical reasoning that you can apply to the game when you strike the bubbles. The purpose of Bubble Shooter is to remove all the lines of bubbles by aiming and hitting the right ones. Clusters of bubbles are removed when you hit a bubble of a certain colour with your bubble of the same colour. As an integral part of the game, you have to make sure that the cluster of bubbles you decide to aim for is the same colours as the bubble you are aiming and shooting at. You may be lucky that you hit a string or cluster of multiple connected bubbles, but usually you will only be able to remove two, three or four bubbles at a time. If you just hit one bubble of the same colour, the bubbles will not be removed, as you need to hit a string of at least two bubbles (3 including your own bubble).
- Find some bubbles to aim at. Best case scenario would be to aim at at least 2 connected bubbles of the same colour as the one you are aiming with.
- Shoot the bubble or string of bubbles and hope you hit the target.
- Start over, with a goal to remove all the bubbles from the screen.
It would be too easy if you could miss all your bubbles without being punished for it. For every fifth bubble that you are unable to connect to a string or cluster of two or more bubbles of the same colour, Bubble Shooter will add another line of bubbles on top in order to make the game increasingly harder the more mistakes you make. Because of this, you cannot just sit back, relax, and hope for the game to end by itself regardless of how many mistakes you make – you have to always be aware of hitting the right ones ensuring you an eventual victory. It rewards you on your road towards victory when you hit the right ones, but Bubble Shooter also punishes you for being sloppy at times when connecting bubbles actually is an option.
If you remove a colour entirely, the colour will not appear again. By the time a colour is entirely gone, you are usually about to win the game as Bubble Shooter will get a lot easier with fewer colours to work with. Naturally, bigger clusters of less amounts of colours will occur and therefore it will be more simple and require less accuracy to hit the spots you want to hit.
Tips and tricks
For every game ever made, there are certain mechanics that by correct use of them will allow you to either win the game faster or make the game easier for yourself in one way or another. Despite the immediate simplicity of Bubble Shooter, game easing mechanics are a big part of it.
Border bouncing
When you play Bubble Shooter, you can use the border of the box to bounce the ball into the place you want. You will reach a point of the game where you cannot hit a string or cluster directly with your ball, and the only alternative seems to be shooting your ball into a spot with no bubbles of the same colour. However, the experienced player will be aware of his possibility of bouncing the ball of the frame of the box and hereby hitting a string or cluster of bubbles that matches your own. Be aware of all your options and take your time deciding where to aim. You are not punished for using a lot of time, so dedicating yourself to a certain game will pay off in the end.
Utilize the time
Contemplate and consider every move you make, when you play Bubble Shooter. As mentioned above, you do not get punished by using extra time on a move. Therefore, it is easy to optimize the score just by looking through your options to make sure you make the right decision. Sometimes the situation will occur that you have two possible strings or clusters of the same colour, and you will feel the freedom to choose whichever. However, you need to consider several things before deciding which string to hit. What is my next bubble, and how can this knowledge be utilized? Is it possible to remove more balls, which are not of the same colour, by hitting one spot over another? Can I avoid adding another tile of random bubbles by placing it on a spot higher up? These are important questions that you have to ask yourself every time you are about to shoot in order to optimize the result. In the end, all these small things make a difference, and it might not seem as a big deal, but making the right calls on all these questions is the difference between a decent and a good Bubble Shooter player. To become a better player, you need to consider all your options. Remember, there is no time pressure. Suboptimal performances lead to suboptimal satisfaction in most cases – even in matters of simple games like Bubble Shooter.
Remove a colour entirely
Another strategical element worth considering is the fact that once a certain colour is removed from the game of Bubble Shooter, it will not occur again. By having less colours to work with, the game will automatically become less complex as the chance of having a string or cluster of a certain colour will become bigger. In a regular game of Bubble Shooter, you have almost already won by the time a colour is removed from the game, but you can chose to specifically play towards this strategy from the start by opening up space in areas with many bubbles of a certain colour. When playing according to this strategy, you will usually purposely shoot bubbles in areas with no chance of hitting a string solely to open up space in other sides of the box giving you a bigger chance for removing a colour entirely. We do not recommend this strategy from default as it is very risky. If you do not hit the initial strings of the colour you want to remove, the game of Bubble Shooter will become almost impossible as extra lines will be added due to the many non-connecting hits. Having many additional lines in the beginning will limit your options and at the same time force you to hit a lot of strings or clusters in a row in order just avoid losing the game before it already started. We only recommend using this strategy if you are an experienced player who can tell that the specific game allows you to play around this.
Cause avalanches
When you play Bubble Shooter, causing avalanches is easily the most effective way to remove balls. If you can manage to cut off an entire section of bubbles only by hitting a string or cluster of a certain colour, all the bubbles in the section regardless of colour will pop as well as the string you aimed for. Trying to create “cliffs”, which can cause avalanches, can therefore be a rewarding strategy you can apply to your game, but it usually requires some luck in order to have the bubbles in the right position for this to happen. Regardless of the unlikeliness of this to happen, removing an entire section is the most game-winning move you can make in a game of Bubble Shooter.
Avoid denying yourself
Creating a new string or cluster of bubbles from the bottom can be difficult to do without messing up your other options. Make sure to not deny yourself a “hidden treasure” when you are forced to make a failed shot. Sometimes when being forced to make a failed shot, you just hit it a random place, but by doing so you can potentially miss out on a money-spinner. Therefore, you should aim to create completely new strings in areas with a lot of different colours. For example, you put your failed shot (green) as an end tail on a string of five or six bubbles of the same colour (red), you either limit or entirely lock down the opportunity of reaching that string of red bubbles in your next shots.
How to gain more points
Basically, you just have to hit your shots when you play Bubble Shooter. However, there are ways for you to get points faster. The more bubbles you remove in one shot, the more points you score.

Are U Strings Illegal in Lacrosse? (New Rule Update) – Lacrosse Pack
The lacrosse stringing rules can seem a bit convoluted, especially with all of the rule changes that have recently been instituted. To help clear up some of this confusion, I took it upon myself to analyze one particular part of lacrosse stringing that has been rapidly evolving as of late: the legality of the “U” string.
U shooting strings are illegal at the youth, high school, and collegiate lacrosse levels. U shooting strings used to be legal at all levels, but this changed when the NCAA enacted a rule where all shooting strings must fall within 4″ from the top of the scoop in 2013. The NFHS followed suit in 2015.
The institution of the 4″ rule changed the very landscape of lacrosse. Like every major change from tradition, this regulation was initially met with backlash. But as the years have gone on, players have begun to adapt to this rule. This article will investigate the exact reasons as to why the lacrosse community decided to take this bold action. I will also offer some helpful advice on how to string your lacrosse pocket to fit these new statutes.
The Legality of U Shooting String Setups in Lacrosse
The NCAA and NFHS removed U shooting string setups from the game of lacrosse by installing one rule: the 4″ rule. The exact wording of the groundbreaking 4″ rule goes as follows.
Any additional strings or laces (e.g., shooting strings) must be located within 4” of top of the crosse (this prohibition does not apply to the goalkeeper’s crosse).
NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Rulebook (Section 19)
Initially, the NCAA planned to make all shooting strings fall within 3.5″ from the top of the scoop. After a great deal of petitioning from lacrosse players and coaches, the NCAA let up an additional half inch.
How the 4″ Rule Effectively Eliminated U Shooting String Setups
All U shooting string setups fail to fall within this 4″ threshold. The laces are located from the head’s midline all the way up to the head’s top third. This stringent regulation eliminated any possibility for nifty stringers to find a loophole within the system.
This came as a shock to lacrosse players everywhere. There were individuals that had played practically their entire career with a U shooting string setup up until the rule change. Some lacrosse players were furious with the rule change, while others welcomed it.
No matter what sentiment that these players held toward this rule change, they all had to transition over to an altogether different shooting string setup if they currently had U shooting strings in their pocket.
In order to have a high caliber shooting setup to get the most throwing precision and accuracy out of the pocket, straight shooters became widely popularized within the lacrosse community. These straight laces felt smooth, fine tuned the throwing release, and even looked aesthetically pleasing.
Example of Illegal U Shooting String Setup
I was actually one of the players directly effected by all of this transitional chaos. The shooting string setup pictured below was the one I personally used for all my gameplay. The string job was inspired by one of my all time favorite players, Kyle Harrison.
Although I did have a particular affinity for this shooting string setup, it was not meant to be. I had to abandon this setup for something else. Luckily, as soon as the rumors came out that the NFHS was trending in this direction, I started to look at other options. Eventually, I settled on a shooting string setup that featured two straight laces and one stacked nylon. Once the rules came into formal effect, I had already played with my new shooting string setup for several months.
From my personal experience, I strongly disliked these new stringing rules when they first came to light. After playing with my same U shooting string setup for multiple seasons, I saw no reason why they were forcing me to change a part of my game that didn’t appear to have a problem in the first place.
Over time, this dislike gave way to tolerance, and that tolerance gave way to fondness. Soon, I realized that these unusual shooting string regulations had more merit to them than I initially thought. They benefited the sport of lacrosse far more than I had ever considered possible.
What were these benefits? To understand how these rules favored the growth of lacrosse, it is necessary to discern why shooting string setups were eliminated from the game to begin with.
Why Were U Shooting String Setups Banned in the First Place?
There were two primary reasons as to why U shooting string setups were phased out of lacrosse. The first reason was to mitigate excessive hold and the second reason was to make the game more up tempo.
Prevents Excessive Hold
If strung properly, a U shooting setup offers a tremendous advantage over a purely straight shooting setup in terms of hold.
The U string would clutch the ball more tightly as it rested in the pocket. It was far more likely that the ball would stay nestled within the U shape when cradling, even in the face of defensive checks. Consequently, ball carriers that featured U string pockets could eat up defensive pressure and will their way to the cage without really having to worry about turning the ball over.
Obviously, defensemen were not too fond of matching up against opponents that would exploit the U string to its fullest advantage. Defensemen have a tough enough job already with managing the unrestricted movement of offensive players and keeping tabs on the vast amount of open field that ball carriers have to work with.
This stringing rule update helped to level the playing field between offense and defense, making for a more fair game overall.
Speeds Up the Sport
Wiping out U shooting string setups also had a direct effect on the pace of lacrosse games.
Prior to the 4″ rule, ball carriers had a tendency to hog the ball and take the ball to the cage themselves. Since the U shooting string setup was so overpowered, even the most talented defensemen encountered trouble fending off ball carriers who abused this setup. As a result, if a ball carrier failed to find purchase with one dodge, they would back out of the set and re-dodge again. Sometimes, a ball carrier would perform two or three re-dodges before finally blowing by the defender.
Needless to say, this slowed down the tempo of the game quite a bit. Lacrosse was not meant to be a one man show on offense. Every facet of the sport was meant to place a heavy emphasis on the team.
Plus, nobody wants to spectate a sport that favors the notion of one ball carrier tediously attacking and re-attacking every single play. That sort of play is boring to watch.
Players, coaches, and fans want to see the ball rapidly moving around the player carousel, so that each teammate receives a touch. They want to witness the ball flying all different directions so that the defense is constantly rotating. This sort of speedy play style is the sport that lacrosse fans know and love.
Say what you want about the NCAA and the NFHS. But at the end of the day, the removal of U shooting string setups did help to promote this kind of accelerated game play.
What Shooting String Setup Should You Use Now?
With the advent of a new age of shooting string setups, you are likely wondering what shooting string setup to call your own. Fear not. There are still a number of viable options when it comes to selecting what shooter setup works best for you and your play style.
Shooting String Setup #1: Three Laces Across
This is a shooting string setup that was popular even before the removal of U strings was formally issued.
With three laces strung straight across the top of the head, the ball releases very smoothly as it travels across each lace. Since there are three shooters total, you can still generate a decent amount of hold with this type of setup. This extra hold translates to superior ball possession and shot power. Although it may not compare to the hold offered by the U shooting string, it is one of the best legal shooting string setups available today.
Shooting String Setup #2: Two Laces Across
This setup is extremely similar to the one we just discussed. Rather than featuring three shooting strings however, it only features two.
By removing one of the shooting strings, you do sacrifice some hold. However, you are able to release the ball a fraction of a second quicker for passes and shots. This is because two shooting strings present less resistance to the ball than three shooting strings. If you rely more on quickness and deception rather than brute power, this may provide the advantage you are looking for.
In my opinion, this is one of the more favorable options for attackmen because the quick release functions so well in and around the crease. At the attack position, every fraction of a second counts. That split second difference in your pass and shot release will certainly come in handy.
Shooting String Setup #3: Two Laces Across, One Stacked Nylon
This is actually the shooting string setup I like to use with my mesh pockets today. With the fusion of the laced shooters and the nylon shooters into one stringing setup, you are able to get a wicked feel for the ball as it releases from the pocket.
The laced shooters promote a nice, smooth release as the ball rides near the scoop. Then, when the ball hits the heavy nylon shooter, the ball physically snaps off of this shooter and out of the pocket. I personally prefer a snappy release to a smooth release, so this has always been ideal for me.
It is a solid all around setup in that it provides a moderate amount of hold and a moderate release timing. This setup does not lean too hard one way or the other. To start out, I recommend experimenting with this shooting string setup first to get a feel for which direction you want to branch out to.
Of course, there is a manifold of various different shooting string setups out there, but the ones above are the most common setups that I’ve seen actually used on the playing field. Don’t be afraid to test the waters. There are plenty of suitable stringing options that will accentuate your particular play style. It is just a matter of going out and finding them.
Final Thoughts
As a final note, don’t treat the end of U shooting strings as the end of lacrosse. Trust me, lacrosse will go on. Although there will be growing pains during this adjustment period, it is nothing that cannot be overcome.

The Ascent Thoughtlessly Regurgitates the Cyberpunk Aesthetic
As your cyberpunk operative moves through the planet Veles, the camera cuts away from them. It lingers on aliens and humans milling about at a bar or loitering in squalor. The standard isometric camera shifts to a profile view or expands to show the layered scale of its planetary city. The Ascent clearly wants the player to feel embodied, to feel like a small part of a larger community. Veles is dense, drenched in neon, hundreds of people hover in almost every area. It feels material as hundreds of wires string themselves on the street, snaking down to the power plants below the city. This is all surface shimmer. The deeper you go into Veles, the more districts you find, the more it feels like a hollow world. The Ascent is undeniably shaped by nearly every piece of cyberpunk media from years past. However, there is little reflection in the way it pulls neon and metal from its ancestors. It would be inaccurate and reductive to say that The Ascent does nothing with its plethora of sci-fi influences. What it does, though, is pretty damn boring.
To its credit, The Ascent doesn’t waste a lot of time. The opening cutscene zooms into “The Ascent Group arcology,” a miniature city within the massive planetary metropolis. Stacked white text reveals that you are an indentured servant, an “indent,” owned by a corporation, The Ascent Group, in exchange for transport to Veles. Then you leap right into the muck, restoring plumbing to your section of the city. However, the complete collapse of The Ascent Group interrupts your routine and you’ll have to dive into every part of the city to rebuild a life. Right away, the game gets convoluted with proper nouns and codex entries. You get notifications for every new location, character, or enemy. Luckily it’s all pretty snappy and the broad strokes are familiar. You are an exploited worker, caught between vast corporate forces, making your way through the only way you know how, through the barrel of a gun.
The thing is, all that immediate world building is simply backdrop for a rote twin-stick shooter. Though your Indent can gain augmentations and skill points and “tacticals” all of it has everything to do with shooting. The combat never really feels expressive, but it does feel like it can be optimized. Skill points upgrade critical hit chance or let you dodge slightly faster. The only ability outside of shooting is hacking, which is paper thin, the vestigial limb of what cyberpunk games should be. Though the game gestures at themes of labor and spends a lot of time establishing setting, it is all in service of simple shooter power fantasy. It’s not alone. Open world games from Assassin’s Creed to Watch Dogs glory in this kind of optimization. These are games not really about exploration or freedom, but about mastering a specific kind of play and conquering the world. The Ascent’s lively setting and large crowds are not enough to distract from the fact that it is an extremely normal videogame.
However, normal videogames are about labor by default. Though your indent is an extreme example of exploitation, playing The Ascent is an exercise in being an idealized subject of liberal capitalism. You quite literally ascend through the dynamics of class, elevating yourself above poverty through your own power and efficiency. In a sense, videogames can serve as an alleviation of capitalism’s harshness. Enough hard work will get you in a better place and allow you financial freedom. The Ascent undoubtedly is just another example of this. However, it gains a darkly funny edge in context. You, and those you kill, are all just workers. Your ascension comes with the death of thousands of others. Despite its issues, it would be silly to say that The Ascent doesn’t do anything with its aesthetics.
Still, this gesture at meaning is just that, a gesture. When the game doesn’t allow any interaction with its world except the violent and economic, its hard wires become paper thin panoramas. It extremely does not help that The Ascent wholeheartedly imports orientalist aesthetics without reflection. On this alien world, East Asian writing is everywhere, cherry blossoms dot the balconies of the ultra rich, and katana wielding mercs obsessed with honor guard pagoda palaces. It is nothing but flavoring to make a sci-fi setting more “exotic” and to align it with the genre’s old guard. Tying an exploitative society directly to stereotypically Asian aesthetics is racist, and there has been plenty of criticism, popular and otherwise, that has pointed this out. There is no reason for any game in 2021, even a smallish one from a Swedish team, to be so orientalist.
That thoughtlessness is reflective of the game as a whole. It discusses labor and capitalism without bite, regurgitates cyberpunk without reflection, and offers only a thinly satisfying shooter at its core. It’s easy to see how this game has become a small hit. It looks good at first glance and is likely significantly more fun with friends. Still, every thrill that The Ascent offers, you can find somewhere else with more honesty and more heart.

Chapter 1
Prologue
A burst from the railgun scattered the impromptu barricade almost instantly.
Throwing a heavy weapon behind my back and picking up an assault rifle, I climbed over the wreckage, glanced briefly at the bodies lying around – no one needed to finish off, after which, without hurrying anywhere, I moved towards the exit from the ruins. There was about a quarter of an hour left, I had time to put my equipment in order and wait for my partner. She, as it became clear from the radio message, took about ten minutes to complete “all cases”, no more.
I was not mistaken. Roots appeared in a tunic – ten revolutions of the second hand. The door flew out of the wall along with the jamb, and the figure, accompanied by clouds of dust, emerged from the doorway. With a slight limp, my partner walked to the circle outlined with paint:
– How long have you been waiting?
– How is your condition? – I ignored the question, looking at the pretty damaged armor and half-torn mount of the medical unit.
– Catch the message.
The girl sank down on broken bricks, stretched out her tired legs and began to “conjure” with the settings.
Her body, like mine, was dressed in “Skill”, and it was not possible to understand who was hiding in an armored shell. To determine that it was Roots, and not someone from the opposing side, I could only by identification marks. Plus the voice that came through the headphones was more than familiar. It, of course, can be faked, but the intonation … No, it was clearly she, and not some robot or someone else’s fighter …
– Yeah.Seriously put you, – I said, looking at the data received over the network. – Health – 34, armor – 29, weapons … Hmm, ammunition is almost running out.
– What do you think? – the lady responded grumpily, taking the special container from me and restoring with its help the characteristics that had fallen into the red and yellow zones.
“Fourteen birrs instead of the usual two,” she continued after a couple of minutes. “And the locusts are almost a full swarm, apart from small fry like technicians and cleaners.
I whistled in surprise:
– Fourteen pieces ?! Aren’t you confusing anything?
– Listen, Andrea, do I look like the dumb heroine from the TV series? – Roots jumped up, having finished fiddling with the container.- If I say fourteen, then it really was so.
– Don’t be angry, – my hand went up in a conciliatory gesture. – I believe that it was so.
– And if you believe, then … That’s it, let’s get out of here.
– Come on.
Taking the other half of the key from my partner, I connected it to mine and put the assembled structure on the ground. Roots came close to me. In order not to be outside the transition, we had to snuggle up to each other.
– I like such moments, – the girl unexpectedly smiled, wrapping her arms around me …
Chapter 1.Silicia
The carpet on the floor was strewn with paper planes as usual. Pyotr Sergeevich was just folding the next one when I pushed through the door and cheerfully asked:
– Have you called me, Comrade Colonel?
The owner of the office glanced absently at me, launched the “tenth” “aircraft” into the corner, waited for it to land, and only then shook his head, pointing to an empty chair.
– How did you rest? He asked as soon as I sat down.
– Fine. Like good old times. In any case, vacation is never long.
“That’s for sure,” Pyotr Sergeevich nodded, leaning slightly forward and folding his arms like a student, as if saying that everything, idle conversations are over, it’s time to get down to business. – So, so, Andrey. There is one job for you. Not the most difficult, but not to say simple. You will have to, my friend, sieve, fly out of bounds.
– Beyond the inhabited part of the Universe? – I joked, already considering how far these limits extend.
– No, I won’t send you that far, you haven’t done that much yet, – the colonel grinned. – Your path lies on Silicia.
– This is where the mafia is in charge? – I showed awareness of the issue.
– She is the most. But you don’t have to become a godfather. Your task is more modest. You just need to do a little investigation and find out everything you can about the fate of our two people.
– Ours? From DRC?
– Not really, – explained Pyotr Sergeevich.- They have no direct relation to the Sinegovskaya Security Department. They are listed as volunteers, from time to time carry out delicate assignments. That is, they did it until recently.
– Are they missing? Or …
“This is exactly what you have to find out,” the chief did not let me finish. – Here, keep the setup data.
I skimmed through the standard form. Elena and Igor Kislitsyns, brother and sister. She is a journalist, age 34, he is a circuit engineer, 41 years old. Both are avid travelers, lovers of a ride through the galactic wilderness. We went to Silicia a week ago. They stopped communicating with relatives and friends immediately upon arrival at the destination.
– Maybe they just decided to take a break away from civilization? – was my first guess.
– Excluded, – snapped Pyotr Sergeevich. – According to the instructions, they have to send messages daily. Moreover, not necessarily with information. One or two words is enough to know that they are all right.
– Got it. So we’ll sort it out on the spot, ”I sighed, returning the papers. – Working undercover?
– No, you will fly there as an official with all the necessary powers.
– Even so? – my surprise was not at all feigned.
– Exactly so, – confirmed the chief. – The business trip has been agreed with colleagues from the Sectosoyuz and Merindosia. It turned out they have the same problems. They promised, by the way, to send one of their own to Silicia. In order, so to speak, to maintain parity.
– What do they have there? Someone also missing? – I was even more surprised.
– Yes, too, – comrade colonel nodded. – Only a month earlier.
– Will the pasta be indignant? Yet this is their area of responsibility.
– The Chipolians are aware of what happened, no one will fix any obstacles to you there. Even,

Genius Mouse Reviews – choose the best Mouse model on imarket.by

H
Values:
The mouse is great, quite comfortable.I have been using it for five years now, and, in general, it has never taken me around. Only about a year ago (i.e. after four years of use) the right button began to stick. But all this can be blamed on the fact that I play a lot with this mouse, especially in Counter Strike: Global Offensive, mainly with a sniper rifle, and I have to very often turn on the zoom, that is, click on this right button. Otherwise, everything is fine.
It is suitable for everything, be it work or play. But for the latter, it is only suitable for playing at the “amateur” level.Well, this is understandable – the mouse is not a game one. But for that kind of money, especially in our time, perhaps the best option. All these five years she served me faithfully.
Disadvantages:
In general, I did not find any cons.Of course they are, but they are felt mainly when playing. And this model is far from playing. Therefore, for its price, its quality is very, very fine.
Comment:
Bottom line: a very good budget universal mouse with decent quality and performance.
F
Values:
Price, Durability, Works after flying around the room.
Disadvantages:
The wire does not bend well.
Comment:
If you need a brick for throwing at people, if you need a thick wire to choke off ill-wishers.If you have weak nerves and you throw a mouse at the wall … This mouse is for you. It costs a penny, works fine, lives like a Soviet tank. One minus, due to a too thick wire at rest, the mouse itself can move. If you work with drawing programs, then this is a problem. As a result, after a couple of years of not very careful use, the left button began to work poorly. The form is convenient, you get used to it quickly. Although after it you will have to get used to others. The mouse is a little “flattened”, not everyone will like it.
Values:
Cheap, comfortable.Works as it should on almost any surface)
Disadvantages:
Short-lived wheel. The wheel held for a year and a half maximum, then it starts jumping wildly when you turn it down or up, it jumps back and forth.
Comment:
In about 8 years, I have replaced 5-6 of these mice)) It is cheap and convenient, suitable for single / online games, I don’t play FPS shooters, I didn’t check how it behaves there. But I think it will last much more, if you do not play as much as I play)) In short, I think the only drawback is a fragile wheel, only because of its breakdown I bought a new mouse. This time I decided to buy A4Tech N-740X, which is also quite cheap for its quality.
Values:
A good wheel, suitable for both smooth scrolling and fast scrolling.Good cable for 1.8 meters, firmly in the mouse.
Sensation at the level of a thousand, a little more than the standard one and the sensor works extremely stably and does not bother at all.
Disadvantages:
Not particularly suitable for shooters.
Comment:
I have been using it almost every day for several months now and I am quite satisfied, as simple as possible and without frills, but it works well and there are simply no bugs with either the sensor or the buttons. The cable is fixed securely, does not leave anywhere, and the case is durable.
Values:
The resolution is slightly higher than standard. The cable is normally fixed in the mouse, does not get tangled and does not fray anywhere. Very durable plastic and normal assembly, when squeezed in the palm of your hand, nothing creaks at all. Convenient wheel and main buttons.
Disadvantages:
What’s wrong with such a cheap mouse? It works after all)
Comment:
The mouse just works and copes with all its duties normally, while it costs just a penny and has some kind of indestructible case and a good cable.Braided wires, additional buttons, backlighting and stuff like that – there is nothing similar here and not close, but she came up perfectly to work with a computer purely)
Values:
Lightweight, strong and reliable, easily reads even sudden movements, the complete absence of glitches and brakes.
Disadvantages:
Design, only 2 buttons and a wheel.
Comment:
Dirt sometimes accumulates near the wheel, so once every couple of weeks you need to clean it so that nothing glitches, but in all other respects, the mouse turned out to be reliable and balanced.I handle it carefully, as a matter of fact, it is like new, matte plastic cannot be scratched in any way, and there is simply nothing to wipe by itself. The wire is of normal length, does not interfere under the arms, even if you sharply move the mouse forward, it does not wrinkle under the arm. Norm.
B
Values:
– inexpensive
– 1200 sensor, works well and clearly on a varnished table, does not float, does not slow down
– fits comfortably in the hand
– keys with a clear click, I’m not loud
– scrolling is informative, without effort, but gives a good feeling of how much scrolled
Disadvantages:
– rigid, inelastic thick cord.It did not create any inconvenience to me, neither in games, nor for work, but as a fact.
– not the biggest, a little more than average, which of course is a matter of habit
Comment:
Satisfied. The wire does not spoil the picture, although the wires are always fixed on the table (a habit). The sensor, scrolling and buttons really like it.
Values:
low price
comfortable rough surface
surprisingly (for such a price) well thought-out ergonomics
Disadvantages:
not found
Comment:
the mouse is not big, I thought that it would not fit normally in my (not a small palm)
so from inexpensive wired mice – the best option!
Values:
It performs its functions well.Really ergonomic: fits comfortably in your hand. Modern, laconic design. Inexpensive.
Disadvantages:
The cord is a little short. Not suitable for large palms.
Comment:
Since “childhood” I love Genius peripherals and prefer other analogs when choosing them, and so far I have never been disappointed. And this mouse immediately took root, comfortably sitting in the hand! At the same time, precise and fast work. In short, I’m getting high! Yes, lovers of expensive sophisticated devices – just by!
Values:
Works on a mouse pad, no other merits!
Disadvantages:
It does not work on all surfaces, the keys cling to each other, the batteries run out very quickly.
Comment:
The most disgusting mouse that I have used, it works only on a special mouse pad, on other surfaces it constantly jumps or slows down the movement, at this moment the keys may not work, even the wheel scrolls with twitching, when using two keys at the same time they cling to each other, batteries run out pretty quickly compared to logitech. Now I regret that I did not take the same Logitech mouse that I had before.
