How does Staples High School in Westport, CT celebrate diversity and inclusion. What initiatives has the school implemented to support LGBTQ+ students. How has the community responded to Pride events at Staples High School.
A Landmark Celebration: Staples High School’s First Pride Event
In a significant step towards inclusivity, Staples High School in Westport, Connecticut, recently hosted its first-ever Pride celebration. This groundbreaking event was part of Westport’s inaugural Pride Month, marking a new era of acceptance and support for the LGBTQ+ community within the school and the broader town.
The celebration featured a variety of activities designed to promote awareness, education, and pride among students and staff. These included:
- An anonymous queer art show
- A station for making Pride buttons
- A billboard celebrating Pride Month
- A special display in the school library
- Sale of Pride-themed merchandise
The event’s success was evident in the emotional responses it elicited from participants. Many students expressed gratitude for having a day when they could truly be themselves, with some even moved to tears by the supportive atmosphere.
The Driving Force: Westport Public Schools Pride Coalition
Behind this landmark event was the Westport Public Schools Pride Coalition, formerly known as the Gender Sexuality Alliance. Kayla Iannetta, the coalition’s chair and a biology teacher at Staples, played a crucial role in organizing the celebration.
Iannetta’s vision for the event extended beyond mere festivity. She emphasized the importance of creating a safe and inclusive environment for all students, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. Her efforts in pushing for a schoolwide “Pride celebration” paid off, resulting in an event that resonated deeply with the school community.
The Power of Anonymous Expression
One of the most impactful elements of the celebration was the anonymous queer art show. This exhibition featured a wide range of artistic expressions from LGBTQ+ staff and students, including photographs, drawings, and paintings. The decision to keep the artists’ identities anonymous was deliberate, symbolizing the steps that many in the LGBTQ+ community often take to conceal their true selves.
The response to the art show was overwhelming, with submissions filling a 9-foot-wide bulletin board. This outpouring of creativity and self-expression underscored the need for such platforms within the school community.
Administrative Support: A Key to Success
The success of the Pride celebration was largely due to the strong support from the school’s administration. Principal Stafford Thomas expressed his admiration for the effort put in by Iannetta and the students, emphasizing the importance of such events in fostering a welcoming school environment.
Thomas’s commitment to continuing this celebration in the future reflects the school’s dedication to promoting diversity and inclusion. His statement, “We expect to have this as long as it’s needed,” underscores the administration’s understanding of the ongoing nature of this work.
Student Perspectives: A Day of Openness and Pride
For many students, the Pride celebration represented a significant milestone in their school experience. One 18-year-old senior, who identifies as non-binary and abrosexual, described it as their first Pride-related event ever. They expressed joy at the opportunity to be open and proud of their identity, highlighting the impact of such events on students’ sense of belonging and self-acceptance.
The celebration provided a platform for students to engage with Pride-related activities in a supportive environment. From selling multicolored pens and stickers to participating in art shows and button-making, students found various ways to express their identities and show solidarity with the LGBTQ+ community.
Looking Ahead: Expanding the Celebration
While the inaugural Pride celebration at Staples High School was a resounding success, organizers are already looking forward to expanding the event in future years. Iannetta expressed her desire to make the celebration “bigger and better” in the coming years, with plans to include elements that were not possible this year due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Some ideas for future celebrations include:
- Offering rainbow cupcakes and other festive foods
- Expanding the art show to include more diverse forms of expression
- Inviting guest speakers from the LGBTQ+ community
- Organizing workshops and panel discussions on LGBTQ+ issues
- Collaborating with local LGBTQ+ organizations for broader community involvement
These plans reflect a commitment to continually improving and expanding the celebration to meet the evolving needs of the school community.
The Broader Context: Westport’s Inaugural Pride Month
The Pride celebration at Staples High School was part of a larger initiative: Westport’s first-ever Pride Month. This townwide celebration included various events designed to promote LGBTQ+ awareness and acceptance throughout the community.
Some of the other Pride Month events in Westport included:
- A virtual panel discussion to kick off the month
- A rally on Jesup Green
- Community art installations
- LGBTQ+-themed book clubs and film screenings
The school’s celebration aligned with these broader community efforts, reinforcing the message of inclusivity and acceptance beyond the school walls.
Challenges and Opportunities: Navigating the Path to Inclusivity
While the Pride celebration at Staples High School represents a significant step forward, it also highlights the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ students and staff in educational settings. The need for such events underscores the work still to be done in creating fully inclusive school environments.
Some of the challenges and opportunities identified include:
- Addressing lingering stigma and discrimination
- Providing comprehensive LGBTQ+ education for all students and staff
- Ensuring consistent support for LGBTQ+ students throughout the school year
- Developing inclusive policies and practices across all aspects of school life
- Engaging families and the broader community in LGBTQ+ acceptance efforts
By recognizing these challenges, Staples High School and the Westport community can continue to work towards creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for all.
The Impact of Visibility: Celebrating LGBTQ+ Identities
One of the most significant outcomes of the Pride celebration was the increased visibility it provided for LGBTQ+ students and staff. For many, this was the first time they felt truly seen and celebrated within their school community.
The impact of this visibility extends beyond the day of the event. It sends a powerful message that LGBTQ+ identities are valued and respected at Staples High School, potentially encouraging more students and staff to feel comfortable being their authentic selves.
Creating Safe Spaces
The Pride celebration also highlighted the importance of creating safe spaces within the school environment. These spaces allow LGBTQ+ students to express themselves freely, seek support, and build community with others who share similar experiences.
Some ways Staples High School is working to create and maintain these safe spaces include:
- Supporting student-led LGBTQ+ organizations
- Providing LGBTQ+-inclusive counseling services
- Offering professional development for staff on LGBTQ+ issues
- Implementing anti-bullying policies that specifically address LGBTQ+ discrimination
These efforts contribute to a school culture where all students feel valued and supported, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
Community Response and Support
The Pride celebration at Staples High School not only impacted the school community but also resonated with the broader Westport community. The event sparked conversations about LGBTQ+ inclusion and acceptance, encouraging community members to reflect on their own attitudes and behaviors.
The positive response from many parents, local businesses, and community organizations demonstrates a growing awareness of the importance of LGBTQ+ inclusion. This support is crucial for creating a truly inclusive environment that extends beyond the school walls.
Building Allies
One of the key outcomes of the Pride celebration was the opportunity it provided for building allyship within the school and community. By participating in Pride events, non-LGBTQ+ students, staff, and community members could show their support and learn more about the experiences of their LGBTQ+ peers.
Some ways the event fostered allyship include:
- Encouraging participation in Pride activities regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity
- Providing educational resources about LGBTQ+ issues
- Highlighting the importance of using inclusive language and respecting pronouns
- Demonstrating the positive impact of visible support for LGBTQ+ individuals
These efforts help create a more inclusive and supportive environment for all members of the school and broader community.
The Role of Education in Promoting LGBTQ+ Acceptance
The Pride celebration at Staples High School underscores the crucial role that education plays in promoting LGBTQ+ acceptance and understanding. By incorporating LGBTQ+ topics and perspectives into the curriculum and school culture, educational institutions can help combat prejudice and foster a more inclusive society.
Some ways Staples High School is working to integrate LGBTQ+ education include:
- Incorporating LGBTQ+ history and literature into relevant courses
- Providing resources on LGBTQ+ topics in the school library
- Offering workshops and seminars on LGBTQ+ issues for students and staff
- Inviting LGBTQ+ speakers and role models to share their experiences
These educational initiatives help create a more informed and empathetic school community, laying the foundation for lasting change.
The Importance of Representation
The Pride celebration also highlighted the importance of representation in educational settings. Seeing LGBTQ+ identities celebrated and affirmed can have a profound impact on students who may be questioning their own identities or feeling isolated.
Staples High School is working to increase LGBTQ+ representation through:
- Highlighting LGBTQ+ role models in various fields
- Ensuring diverse representation in school materials and media
- Supporting LGBTQ+ staff members who choose to be open about their identities
- Celebrating LGBTQ+ achievements throughout the school year
These efforts contribute to a school environment where all students can see themselves reflected and valued.
Moving Forward: Sustaining the Momentum
While the inaugural Pride celebration at Staples High School was a significant milestone, the work of creating a truly inclusive environment is ongoing. The school and community are now faced with the challenge of sustaining this momentum and building on the success of the event.
Some strategies for maintaining and expanding LGBTQ+ inclusion efforts include:
- Establishing a dedicated committee to oversee LGBTQ+ initiatives throughout the year
- Incorporating feedback from students, staff, and community members to improve future events
- Developing partnerships with local and national LGBTQ+ organizations
- Creating opportunities for ongoing dialogue and education about LGBTQ+ issues
- Regularly assessing and updating school policies to ensure they are fully inclusive
By committing to these ongoing efforts, Staples High School can continue to lead the way in creating a more inclusive and accepting educational environment.
The Ripple Effect
The impact of Staples High School’s Pride celebration extends far beyond the school itself. As one of the first schools in the area to host such an event, Staples is setting an example for other educational institutions in the region and beyond.
This pioneering effort has the potential to inspire other schools to implement similar initiatives, creating a ripple effect of inclusivity and acceptance across the educational landscape. By sharing their experiences and best practices, Staples High School can contribute to a broader movement towards LGBTQ+ inclusion in schools nationwide.
As the school community reflects on the success of its first Pride celebration, there is a sense of optimism about the future. The event has laid a strong foundation for continued growth and progress, with the potential to positively impact generations of students to come.

Westport’s Staples High School hosts first Pride celebration
The 18-year-old Staples High Schools senior — who identifies as non-binary and abrosexual (which refers to someone whose sexuality is changing or fluid) — was helping sell merchandise as part of Staples’s first-ever Pride celebration, which itself was part of Westport’s inaugural Pride Month.
Even though June is typically celebrated as Pride Month nationwide, for years, there wasn’t much in Westport for LGBTQ people, Pride Month organizers said.
“This is my first Pride-related thing ever,” Mellin said while selling multicolored pens, stickers and other items. “There’s never been anything like this. I’m just so glad there’s a day where you can be open and just be proud to be who you are.”
Mellin was one of the students, staff and faculty members who said they were grateful for Friday’s celebration, which included, among other things, an anonymous queer art show, a station to make Pride buttons, a billboard celebrating Pride Month and a special display in the school library.
The event is a turning point for Staples and those who work and attend school there, said Kayla Iannetta, chair of the Westport Public Schools Pride Coalition, formerly the Gender Sexuality Alliance.
“I’ve had students coming up to me, crying and emotional, saying how grateful they were to have a day when they could really be themselves,” said Iannetta, who also is a biology teacher at Staples and co-adviser of the Staples Pride Coalition.
The school event was one of many planned townwide for Westport’s first Pride Month, which launched earlier in the week with a virtual panel discussion and included such events as a rally on Jesup Green, scheduled for Saturday.
Iannetta said she pushed hard to make Friday’s event a schoolwide “Pride celebration.” One of the cornerstones of the event was the art show, which featured photos, drawings, paintings and other art works, all by LGBTQ staff and students, posted without names attached.
Iannetta said it was important to her that the show be anonymous, to symbolize the steps that people in the LGBTQ community take to hide who they are. As with other aspects of Friday’s celebration, Iannetta said she wasn’t sure how many people would want to participate in the show, but she ended up with enough pieces to fill a 9-foot-wide bulletin board.
Staples Principal Stafford Thomas said he was pleased and impressed by how much work Iannetta and the students put into the Pride celebration, which he said he hopes will be an annual event.
“We expect to have this as long as it’s needed,” he said. “You get the right mix up of people to organize it, and you wind up with a day that’s a real celebration.”
Iannetta said there were a lot of things she couldn’t offer this year, because of lingering COVID-19 restrictions.
“A lot of moms wanted to bring in rainbow cupcakes, but we couldn’t have outside food,” she said. “Next year, I want it to be bigger and better.”
Westport superintendent responds to alleged racism at Staples, Cheshire football game
WESTPORT — Superintendent of Schools Thomas Scarice has issued a statement after allegations of anti-Semitism and race-based hate at a football game between Staples and Cheshire high schools.
Scarice said that following the Friday night game he was made aware of “a number of social media posts alleging anti-Semitic and racist actions and comments directed towards Staples players and students during the Staples/Cheshire High School football game in Cheshire.”
Scarice went on to say that Cheshire school officials and Cheshire police are investigating the incident.
Cheshire school officials could not be reached immediately by Hearst Connecticut Media. Cheshire police declined to comment.
“We are all committed to cooperating, investigating, and addressing this matter,” Scarice said. “It is necessary for the school administrations, and police departments when necessary, to gather facts before taking punitive action.”
He went on to say that action will be taken regardless of the outcome of the investigations.
“If we confirm acts of anti-Semitism or race-based hate, we will assertively act. If there are misunderstandings, we will work together to learn from these events,” Scarice said.
He also issued a warning to be cautious when dealing with this issue on social media.
“Given the volatility of social media, I caution all members of the community to take a measured approach in addressing matters such as these,” Scarice said.
Westport’s school administration plans to continue its investigation and will follow up at the end of the day on Monday. They ask that if you were present at the game and have information of any acts of anti-Semitism or race-based hate, to please contact the Staples administration.

Portable greenhouses made of covering material
TOP-7 best greenhouses made of arches with covering material
Advantages
Greenhouses made of arches with covering material vary in size, density of the used agrofibre, as well as in the type of arcs. There are other functional little things that also divide structures by type, for example, the presence of special fasteners and zippers at the ends. Among the variety of models, there are general advantages. The advantages of arc greenhouses with covering material include:
Versatility. Such constructions can be used not only for growing familiar tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers. They are suitable for rooting seedlings, growing seedlings and greenery.
Ability to choose the optimal size.We are talking both about the length of the product, which can reach m, and about the height, which varies between 80-150 cm.
Arcs made of metal or high-quality plastic. There are also options with a frame made of metal and covered with PVC sheath. Covering greenhouses with transverse slats reinforcing the frame are very popular.
Availability of convenient mounts. Pegs and staples hold the cover material in place on arcs and help anchor it securely in the ground. Some models are equipped with U-shaped pegs. They are designed for the ends of the greenhouse.
Separately, it should be noted that the agrofibre used to complete the products differs in density and processing. Of particular interest to summer residents are products whose arcs are sewn into the covering material, and the process of opening and closing the ends is regulated by a zipper.
Consider the most popular greenhouses with covering material, which should be bought by those who want to provide an ideal climate for plants and grow them without hassle and worries.
“Successful Season”
Products manufactured by the company of the same name. These covering greenhouses are distinguished by a favorable price, since they are supplied for sale by the manufacturer without intermediary margins. The service life declared by the “Udachny Sezon” company is 5 years. Greenhouses made of arches with a covering material are completed with high-density agrofibre from the Agrotex company. The offer is unique, and the design itself is unmatched on the market. The arc length is 2.3 m.It is about one and a half meters high. The arcs are made from primary raw materials and are only sold in white. This should be paid attention to those who are afraid of counterfeits.
The density of the covering material of the SUF is 50 g / m. Plastic greenhouse arches are already sewn into the material. Rigid and durable LDPE pipes, resistant to corrosion, with a diameter of 20 mm, bend easily and do not break. The set also includes pegs for installation in the ground – 18 pcs. They are made of stainless steel. The length of the working part is 21 cm, the total length is 34 cm. The product is completed with clips for fastening the material when watering. The greenhouse with covering material “Udachny Sezon” is supplied in several sizes. You can buy a product in lengths of 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 and meters.
Conclusion: a truly unique proposal that has no analogues. A great opportunity to ease your worries about caring for vegetables.
“Snowdrop”
Products of the “Bashagroplast” company, which have proven themselves in the market of garden products.Once a greenhouse “Snowdrop”. It had no analogues. We can say that this covering structure was one of the first to appear on the market. With the release of this greenhouse on sale, summer residents no longer need to think about how to fix the covering material on the arcs. After all, they were already sewn into agrofibre. The snowdrop greenhouse is supplied for sale in several sizes – 3.4.6 and m. The set includes dense breathable spunbond, low-melting polyethylene arches, as well as additional accessories that make the use of the structure convenient. We are talking about plastic clips designed for attaching agrofibre to arcs. They are necessary so that the spunbond does not move out of the arc during watering. Plants can be enriched with moisture directly through agrofibre.
The structure is also equipped with high-quality pegs, with which you can fix the spunbond from the sides and ends in the ground.
You will not have any questions about how to choose a covering material for a greenhouse after the spunbond becomes unusable.By the way, the manufacturer gives a three-year warranty. This is the minimum service life of the agrofibre. You can then purchase the Snowdrop Cover separately.
“Snowdrop +”
“Snowdrop +” is an improved model of the above-described construction with a covering material.
Before you buy the Snowdrop Plus greenhouse, you should find out what the Bashagroplast employees have changed in the new model. The woven design of greenhouse plastic greenhouse film before it is formed into sheets or rolls is the feature that sets them apart from conventional plastic.
This is an inexpensive option than buying a large glass frame. They are also easy to install and are ideal for greenhouses of various shapes and sizes. These plastics can also surround windows, doors, and vents.
Finally, the durability of greenhouse plastic means that much less plastic ends up in the trash, which will reduce environmental pollution.
Different types of greenhouse plastics
These four different types of greenhouse plastics can last two to three years before they need to be replaced. However, extreme weather conditions such as severe frost, tornadoes, hail and hurricanes are factors that accelerate the life of the plastic.
Polycarbonate plastic
Polycarbonate plastic is considered one of the best materials for greenhouse coverings. This plastic is double-walled or double-walled polyethylene plastic. With proper care, this coating can last ten years or more. Year-round gardening is easy due to its ability to retain heat and moisture.
Polyethylene plastic
Polyethylene comes in two strengths. Commercial grade polyethylene is usually used in large industrial projects. The healthy variety is the recommended strength for small to medium sized private greenhouses.
The most common variety commonly sold on internet gardening sites is the utility variety. With good care, polyethylene can last one to two years. The polyurethane repair kit is a handy item to carry around in the greenhouse to repair small cracks.
Polyvinyl plastic
Polyvinyl is a more expensive plastic compared to polyethylene. The durability of the plastic justifies the higher price tag, because polyvinyl can last five years or more if stored in optimal condition. This means regular checks and cleaning to maintain its durability.
Copolymer
Copolymer is one step ahead of polyethylene plastic in terms of durability and strength. With regular cleaning and inspection, it can last three years or more. However, it has been observed that plastic becomes brittle, brittle and can break after three years. There is an expensive type of copolymer that is transparent like glass and much stronger than the cheaper ones.

The Complete Small Greenhouse Buyer’s Guide
What Makes a Good Small Greenhouse?
Answer: It depends on what you plan to use for .We know this is not very enjoyable and it can be difficult to know which is best for you, but there are a few things to consider that can help narrow down the features you should look for and prioritize.
How much space do you have
Since you are looking for a small greenhouse, we assume that you may not have enough space. Think well about space in all three dimensions, length , width and height , to determine which greenhouse might be best for you.
For example, if you have little ground space but have six or seven feet vertically, a multi-tiered greenhouse might be the best option for you. If you don’t have much outdoor green space but a lot of concrete space, a greenhouse, which matches this may also be appropriate.
How much space do you need
Another issue that should be considered is the volume that you need to increase. If the greenhouse is for one or two plants, then you don’t need as much space as hundreds of seedlings do.
It is also important to consider what space your business needs; a tree needs a space of a different shape than a flower, and the greenhouse you choose should reflect this.
How Your Plants Should Be Protected
Different materials have different properties, so based on the needs of your plants , can help you decide what to use for your greenhouse cover. Some of them are more resistant to weather conditions, while others keep warm better. The covers on our list are made from the following materials.
- Transparent or colored PVC cover
- Transparent or colored PC cover
- Vinyl cover

Selection criteria
: how we ranked the best small greenhouses
When choosing small greenhouses we took factors into account We know that nothing makes a greenhouse perfect for everyone, but there are a few things we value for every greenhouse, for example:
- Material quality
- Efficient use of space
- Durability
- Weather resistance
All the greenhouses on our list embody these qualities to one degree or another. We’ve also looked at several other factors that vary greatly from greenhouse to greenhouse, and we’d like to highlight them.
Dimensions and weight
Each greenhouse has its own shape and size , which means that there is most likely one greenhouse that suits your needs. Some are tall and thin, others are longer and flatter, and some are just compact. Weight ranges from 2 pounds to 12 pounds.
We generally prefer greenhouses over more small greenhouses, but we have also included some very small greenhouses.Weight is heavily dependent on material, so it doesn’t necessarily match size, but stronger materials tend to be heavier, so we go for the heavier greenhouses.
Planting area
Planting space refers to flat surfaces that plants can be placed on. Some of these areas differ depending on whether you are renting a shelf or where you are placing a greenhouse, but we often prefer greenhouses with a larger area for planting. so that you can maximize the number of plants you can plant in your greenhouse.
Installation Method and Type
Most greenhouses fall into several different categories depending on the type of greenhouse and how you set it up. More complex greenhouses require assembly, but some simply open on their own.
Different build types and methods have their pros and cons, but we preferred the ones that are relatively simple and require few, if any, tools.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Can I use the greenhouse both indoors and outdoors?
Yes, all greenhouses on our list are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use .However, there are a few things to keep in mind if you decide to place your greenhouse outside.

In other cases, the plastic may not be the strongest, and there is a possibility that it could melt or deteriorate under very strong sun.
Another thing to keep in mind is how to install the greenhouse on the ground. Some stick into the ground, while others just sit on it.
Those with stakes perform well outdoors , while others may be more vulnerable if they cannot be held firmly.
Is there a weight limit for the plants I plant in the greenhouse?
There is a weight limit for some greenhouses. Greenhouses with shelves generally cannot handle as much as others, from pounds 6 to 25 pounds , depending on the design and brand of the shelf.
Some greenhouses are installed directly on the ground on which they sit. In such cases, the weight limit is not determined by the greenhouse, but by the surface on which you installed it.
Are the greenhouses heated?
None of the greenhouses on this list have a heating system. Some of them have special covers , which are designed to keep heat inside and thus have a natural heating system.
Others recommend using certain heaters with them, such as ceramic heaters or seedling heaters, that are best suited to the shape of the greenhouse or the materials it is made of.
It is best to be careful when heating the greenhouse with insulation. There are other measures, such as wrapping it in a thick blanket before resorting to the heater.
Before using , it is best to check the type of plastic used in the greenhouse to see if it is suitable for use with the heater.
How to install a greenhouse?
There are several different installation methods for these small greenhouses, which range from very small work to large work; However, all greenhouses come with everything needed for installation.
The first and easiest way to install is the telescopic greenhouse . These greenhouses are usually installed directly on the ground, and when you take them out of their packaging, you just need to unfold them and they will stand on their own.
To secure them, in most cases there are small stakes that should be driven into the ground near the corners of the greenhouse.
Another installation method is uprights, elbows and removable cover . While this setup takes a little more work, it is more flexible to suit your needs. Most often it is used in greenhouses with shelves and simply requires joining the parts according to the instructions.
The latter method is more complex and is only used in a hard-surfaced greenhouse. It takes basic tools to twist the hard plastic pieces.
Are there any restrictions on having a small greenhouse, and if so, how do these greenhouses deal with them?
Having a small greenhouse means that you cannot go inside to care for your plants.Unlike traditional greenhouses, small greenhouses are only designed to house plants and you need to work outside to manage and water them.
The good news is that all the small greenhouses on our list are designed with this in mind. They often have large zippered valves that can be secured for easy access, and are much easier to ventilate than traditional large greenhouses.

How to choose greenhouse material • Instead of
By lengthening the growing season, greenhouse cultivation allows you to grow organic produce without pesticides all year round.
Getting started with greenhouse cultivation can seem like a daunting task, but with the right information, you can decide which greenhouse is best for you.
Greenhouse design
Greenhouse design greatly affects its performance and energy efficiency. While other materials are available, many people use metal frames to create free-span interiors.
The basic greenhouse structure includes rafters, end wall, side posts, side walls and purlins (horizontal beams to the rafters). Three types of greenhouses are produced from these components: hanging, free-standing and connected to the gutter.
Related post: Greenhouse Plans
Each of these designs can be used for commercial or personal use, but some may be better for different purposes. For example, a hanging greenhouse is usually attached to houses and for this reason it is mainly used for personal gardens.
In contrast, freestanding greenhouses can be placed almost anywhere, making them suitable for both commercial and non-commercial use. Finally, commercial growers use gutter connected greenhouses because you can connect multiple greenhouses together.
Structures, floors and coverings can be made from a combination of materials, each of which affects the efficiency of your greenhouse.Plants are as strong as their greenhouses are, so it is important for you to use the right building materials for the environment in which your plants will thrive.
Construction
The construction of the greenhouse can be made of aluminum, galvanized steel, wood or plastic. Each material has a different structure and type of panel that is best to work with. For example, steel is best suited for polyethylene sheets or polyvinyl chloride (PVC) based fabrics. If you’re on a tight budget, plastic is also a good option and doesn’t rot with moisture like wood.
Floors
Typical materials for floors in greenhouses are concrete, aerated concrete, gravel and dirt. The floor material affects both the thermal efficiency of the greenhouse and the light transmission.
Use gravel or dirt with caution because they do not retain heat or protect your plants from pests. Plus, porous concrete allows water to drain, retains heat better, and protects your plants from pests by creating an impenetrable barrier.
Cover
Glass, fiberglass, double layer polyethylene, PVC and polycarbonate can be used to cover your greenhouse. Covering is the most important aspect of your greenhouse because it determines how much light your plants receive. Different materials let in a certain amount of light and provide different dispersion. You have to be careful when choosing cover material because too much light can overheat plants and shading can kill plants from lack of energy.
Types of greenhouses
Glass
When people think of greenhouses, glass structures usually come to mind. Glass greenhouses are probably the most attractive option, but they are often not energy efficient and can be expensive.
If you decide to use glass, keep in mind that glass does not diffuse light, so you will need to choose a diffusion method for your plants. There are two main types of glass greenhouses you can choose from: single and double.
Single-layer
These greenhouses are not suitable for northern growers where crops are grown in colder climates. Single-glazed greenhouses are fragile, often break and cannot support the weight of snow. A single layer greenhouse is also the least energy efficient greenhouse because a single layer greenhouse allows heat to be removed.
Single glazed greenhouses are great for light transmission, but this can be a problem in areas where too much sun can burn your plants. These disadvantages, combined with the fact that glass is expensive, mean that single-glazed greenhouses are more suitable in form than function.
In addition, heating costs can be two or even three times higher than a greenhouse with double glazing or PVC fabric. The thermal insulation value, or R-value, of a single layer glass greenhouse is around 0.9, so you will need to find a way to heat the greenhouse during the colder months.
Double glazing
Double glazing of the greenhouse is designed to be more energy efficient without compromising on traditional style. If you still need a glass-style greenhouse, double glazing can cut your heating costs in half. These greenhouses have an R value of 1.5 to 2.0, making them better than single glazing for insulation. In double glazed greenhouses, a coating can also be applied to the inside to reflect heat and increase the greenhouse’s insulation. Before buying a double glazed greenhouse, you should also know that this is usually the most expensive type of greenhouse.

Transform your mobile home into a portable greenhouse
Set up a mini garden room on your portable terrace by converting your mobile home into a portable greenhouse. (See Mobile Greenhouse Diagrams in the Image Gallery.)
MOTHER’s newest adventure in practical, low-cost suburban living is renovating (and ultimately relocating) an old yet durable and easy-to-use home trailer. (This is what the mobile home was called when our 79th Skyliner was built.) Built on a hillside in the river valley, the trailer to the west (front) rises more than 4 feet above the ground, with old wooden steps in front of it. shaky.
The living room also has a sliding glass door, and there is nothing in front but a 4-foot drop and a hill that slopes down to the river. No insurance company would take that risk, so the first major improvement we will make is an 8 by 20 foot pad along the west side between the front door and the carriage. We will complete the front staircase terrace with a covered entrance and where it passes in front of an 8ft wide slider with an 8ft by 12ft combined greenhouse / sun porch enclosed: garden room.
We intend to use the trailer as a truly mobile home, as many MOTHER’S readers have over the years. They buy a robust and fully functional trailer, but old and inexpensive, and live in it cheaply as they save every penny to buy their piece of land in the countryside. They then install the wheels of the trailer, drive it out of town, and live in it while they build the log house of their dreams.
No. … … how to turn a mobile home into a portable greenhouse – an all-season terrace / garden room, mobile like a trailer or a bus? Most of the published sources recommend flooring that meets building codes for the high-end suburbs that surround the main metro areas: yards or deeper, heavier structures with nails, and one side permanently attached to the house.
Answer: Design the deck and future sun space, which are coded as “temporary” or “portable” structures … just like gazebos, latrines, tent dividers, timber-framed sheds, chicken coops, pillar barns, etc. buildings with metal lawns not attached to a permanent structure. They can be easily relocated and are not covered by the code (although some may be prohibited by zoning or public health ordinances).
We found that the foundation of the trailer is not permanent. A steel girder frame simply rested on concrete blocks that were half-covered with a thick layer of gravel. Like under the railroad tracks, the loose gravel not only drains rainwater, but also travels through itself and (to some extent) balances the movement of the trailer caused by differentiated frost swelling of the earth under it in cold weather. It was obvious to us (and to our sane country, building code officials) that a deck / garden room built on Model Code-approved deep supports would not rise (albeit gently) with the trailer. These two will eventually part – literally separate, so we decided to add our supplement on a gravel base as well. But (copying a practice we found in the best of our local trailers), we gave the platform more wind-resistant weight by building it on heavy, well-maintained creosote logs set in well-draining gravel, just like railroad tracks.
Platform
The plan of our basic structure is simple in itself – it is based on several decks, porches and garden houses that we have built over the years. The vertical posts, attached to the well-maintained gravel logs, line up in a rectangle determined by the size of the garden room floor, while the rim posts that form the outer frame are bolted to the inside of the posts. The beams are suspended from steel hangers that are attached to the inside of the rim beams. Plywood sheets are placed on beams to serve as a floor.
If the tops of the posts are 4 by 4 bar and the platform is less than 5 feet above the ground, the rim beams are 2 by 10 beams, the 2 by 8 beams are 16 inches apart, and the plywood floor is 1 / 2 “Plywood 3/4” thick. The deck can be 8 feet, 10 feet, or 12 feet deep – however long you want – and will handle any household load it may encounter.
For heavy structures or commercial loads, use 6×6 struts. Double rim girders and increase girders to 2×10 in 16 ”increments.
For a light garden room and easy use, you can use 2 by 8 around the perimeter and (theoretically) 24 ” spacing. But don’t; stay with time-tested 16-inch joist spacing.
For flooring, use at least 1/2-inch outer A / C bonded layer (smooth on one side). Or, for ease of use, lay two 3/8 ” sheets on top of each other, with a layer of waterproof, mildew-proof creosote construction paper in between.
To form a railing around open areas of the platform or a solid half-wall to support a solid and well-insulated garden room, the posts are not cut at floor level, but extended an additional 30+ inches. To create a wall under the garden house, insulation is laid between the pillars between the plywood sheets. In the open parts of the flooring, a plank and horizontal elements are attached to the posts.
Do not fasten with nails, but use removable self-tapping screws made of stainless steel, galvanized drywall.
HERE AS WE DELIVER
Base Beams for 8 “x 20” Platform
1. Remove sod and topsoil with a 10 “by 22” rectangle down to dense soil (about 6 “deep).Pour, level and compact an 8-inch layer of crushed stone or coarse gravel.
2. Washing landscape logs into gravel as follows:
- a. The house-side edges of the beams are parallel to the house wall and at least 2 inches from the house siding, and
- b. Their tops are on a flat plane, horizontal along each long edge, but sloping slightly downward and away from the house. A drop of 2 inches is quite normal and will ensure that rainwater will drain off the open area.
- g. Their outer margins describe a perfect rectangle:
– 19 feet 7 “long and
– 7 feet 9″ deep (so six sheets of 1 to 2 “back space will fit between the posts).
3. Using galvanized frame plates, join all joints between the beams.
Posts
1. For home-side uprights (that do not support the railing), cut six 4-by-4 timber beams long enough to extend from the top of the main timber to 6 inches below the top of the building floor (or top of doors opening onto the Platform ).
2. For the railing around the outer edge of the platform, cut twelve posts of 44 to a length equal to the length of the six inner posts plus 33 inches (for a standard 32-inch handrail).
3. Fastening the struts to the support beams using galvanized steel supports:
- a. so that the outer edges of the posts coincide with the outer edges of the support beams,
- b. there is one at each end, and. … …
- , one center at each 4 feet mark between the ends.
Frame
1. Attach the 2 x 10 rim beams (frame peripheral members) along the inner sides of the six uprights against the wall of the house — the top of the planks 2-6 inches below the door sill or interior floor.
2. Attach 2 x 10 around the outer uprights. Place them 2 inches lower than the inner boards.
3. Attach the 2 by 10 to the outside of the side posts by joining the back and front boards (with a slight downward slope).
4. Attach the rim beams to the uprights with two 4 “7/16” lag bolts (large ratchet wrench hex screws).Pre-drill the holes with a 1/4 inch drill bit.
5. If the two 2 x 10 lines meet at the rack, double the width of the rack behind the joint by screwing two 10-inch 2 by 4 lines to each side of the top of the rack.
Beams
1. Attach 2 x 8 (2 x 10 if heavy loads are expected) floor beams to the frame members using galvanized steel hangers aligned so the top of the beams are flush with the tops of the rectangular framing members.
a. Attach double hangers to each intermediate strut and single hangers 16 inches apart (two single hangers between each strut). The twins will provide each 48 plywood floor panels with their own edging boards so that they can be viewed as fully modular pallets that can be individually removed, making the platform a mobile assembly.
g. Cut 2 x 8 x 8 planks to the size of the hangers; touch so that they are flush with the top of the frame.Secure with self-tapping screws.
Floor
1. Insulate between the floor joists by running a reflective (breathable) sheeting along the underside of the joists. Bonnet the kraft-based fiberglass insulation to fill the spans. Cover with a vapor barrier with plastic wrap.
2. Install 1/2 “or 3/4” all-weather plywood (single sided) floor. Secure with screws every 6 inches around the edges of all sheets.
3. Make a historic pillar — a 5 foot long strip of scraps, marked to show the distance from the edge of the centerline layer of the hidden beams, and use it to locate and sink screws every 2 feet down the middle of the beams.
4. The trailing edges of the floor layer are not supported underneath by 4 to 6 inches. So support him from above. Run 2 by 2 or 2 by 4 lines down the back and use 3 “screws to firmly press the layer against the 2”.
5. Treat the floor with several coats of decking preservative and plan the finish to suit any floor surface. Indoor and outdoor carpet is a good option if it stays dry.
Garden Room Half Height Walls
1. Where the garden room will be, the tops of the 4 x 4 end caps and the 2 x 6 side posts are centered on the posts.
2. Place a 2 by 4 sill on the floor between the uprights.
3. Cut and secure 2 by 4 vertical studs between the threshold and the middle of the bottom of the cap strip, every 16 inches.
4. Fill the space between the uprights with reflective insulation. Cover with vapor barrier. Pile 3/8 ” plywood on half of the wall.
5. External railing cladding with plywood or other cladding to hold siding of your choice: 1/2 “CDX is the safest layer as it holds clapboard, plaster, plywood or any other cladding.
6. Attach an 8 ”wide strip of aluminum strip to the top of the rail.Bend over on each side to protrude around the edge.
Railings of the open area
1. On the open area of the deck, the ends of the pillars with slats 2 by 6 – the front edge protruding beyond the front edge of the pillars and even onto the adjacent half-wall.
2. The rails will also protrude an inch or more along the inner edge of the uprights. Wrap the 5/4 “by 4” decking with square edges around the top inside of the uprights, snug against the underside of the cover to support the rail…. … another horizontal passage 5/4 4 inches above the floor. … … and run 5/4 for 6 seconds in the middle around the rail.
Ladder
1. Construct a regular ladder in the railing lintel.
2. Place the ladder risers (notched planks holding the horizontal steps) and handrail posts at ground level on galvanized reinforcement attached to a piece of landscape timber laid in the gravel base.
Garden Room
Now how to build a garden room on a modular platform that is lightweight, easy to assemble and disassemble for moving.durable enough to withstand our New England weather, but not strong enough to be considered a permanent structure requiring a permanent foundation.
We first looked at dome-shaped portable garages made of clear or colored UV-resistant plastic or tarpaulin stretched over curved metal pipes. Costs range from $ 300 to $ 700 per vehicle, and if located on bare ground, they are mounted on two wooden poles or 44 poles held in place with stakes.Frames can be easily attached to the deck platform just as easily.
We found the cheapest models too flimsy. And better models could crash into the ground and cover the truck, but were too inflexible in design for a rooftop garden room. … … even if they are covered with a translucent plastic coating. There was no easy way to install windows or screens without compromising the integrity and strength of the covering material.
At first we thought we would have to come up with our own design. But someone noticed that all the thinking was done for us (many times) by the firms that supply greenhouse kits sold from seed and grower catalogs. They advertise in MOTHER and other gardening, automotive, water sports and construction magazines.
We sent out all the literature we could find and found that prices for a shelter kit, containing about half of a typical deck from 8 feet to 10 feet deep and 20 to 24 feet long, range from as little as 300 to 5000 dollars. You can choose from kits ranging from basic fittings to complete designs, as well as a variety of raw materials to create your own or standard design frame and cover. Buildings come in gable, semicircular (Quonset), and pointed domes (which can be cut in half for single slope models), as well as the awnings themselves. The least expensive are the small (8ft by 8ft or 12ft by 8ft) hobby structures with an aluminum frame or dimensional wood frame, which you will find for $ 200–1000 in the seed and garden supplies catalogs.More complex and expensive designs are available from manufacturers (see List of Sources).
We also came up with a pyramid design that impressed us with its economy, flexibility in both design and materials, and which could be disassembled within a day.
The illustrations in the Image Gallery show a house using Stimson’s Bows, one of our favorite designs (described below). As with the bow house, any design can be adapted to take advantage of the greatest innovations in greenhouse / garden room construction, as sheet plastic has replaced glass: corrugated polycarbonate or polyethylene panels made in 3.Available in 5mm, 5mm, 6mm and 8mm thicknesses. Each sheet is a sandwich of flat panels with longitudinal membranes between the surfaces forming a series of air channels, so the product resembles translucent corrugated cardboard. The channels contain dead air, which provides excellent insulating properties; the thinnest panels have a thermal insulation coefficient of R-3 – more than double that of single glass. The material is lightweight, resilient and durable, but it can be cut with scissors. It is unbearable, withstands snow and hail, and is also semi-flexible, so it matches the Quonset style and other curved designs. It contains UV inhibitors that slow down polymer breakdown by the sun, and is reasonably priced at around $ 1.65 per square foot compared to alternatives. By comparison, thin plastic mulch costs between $ 0.05 and $ 0.07 per square foot, rigid fiberglass in resin panels cost $ 1 or $ 1.20, and framed single pane glass costs between $ 2 and $ 2.20.
Below are the MOTHER brand choices in each greenhouse / garden room category that are light enough to be installed on deck (and disassembled with you).
PVC Sanitary Ware / Pipe Frame
“Small Inch Greenhouse Greenhouse from Powell & Powell in Fukey Warina, North Carolina is a gable roof structure with a white PVC water pipe frame. We especially appreciate the ability to permanently weld inch tubing and connectors using solvent welding or to connect friction joints and hold them together with small nails in the holes drilled in the joint. If we choose this option, we will convert it into an extension, weld the structure into easily transportable flat modules and connect the modules using pin friction joints. One of the benefits of this product is that if a part is broken or you want to change the plan, white PVC pipes and fittings are available from the plumbing department of any hardware store.
Great value for money, kits include color-coded frame tube, pre-cut plastic film cover with 2 years UV protection guarantee (lasts longer with optional sun protection cloth), wood floor hardware, Shelter support system for shelter on both sides, exhaust fan and hinged door with latch, as well as step by step instructions. The 8.5-by-10-foot model costs less than $ 400; 8.5 by 12 feet – just under $ 500. A delightfully simple misting system costs less than $ 100. Buy through Mellinger’s Garden Supply catalogs.
Hardware Kits
The Best Buy Inch we found is a Hobby Green House Inch System for less than $ 50 that can be found in the Stokes Seeds catalog. Kit includes plastic connectors and directions for building a 7 ‘by 7’ greenhouse canopy with a gambren roof for attachment to the deck.Buyers supply lumber for 2 by 2 framing (and 2 by 4 foundation boards and anchors if needed). The instructions show how to sheathe flexible wrap held by elastic elastic elastic straps passing through the slots built into the end wall connectors, as well as how to build doors, vents and boarding benches. You cut the lumber to size yourself, so it’s easy to adapt to any deck space, as well as using semi-rigid fiberglass or flexible corrugated film for the roof or side panels.
Wood Frame Canopy
The most technically elegant design we have found is a Bow Roof Canopy from Stimon Marine of Boothbay, Maine that you can build any size you need with thin wood slats that are bent in shape and bonded into heavy-duty pairs with thin wooden spacers between them. The cover can be plastic wrap, corrugated polyethylene, or fiberglass. The instructions tell you how to build a canopy large enough to accommodate ocean boats but can be easily reduced.A set of plans with drawings to the scale of a large barn, full instructions, photo instructions for making bows, and instructions for folding costs $ 20.
Ring Houses
MOTHER’s chooses a large greenhouse at the most reasonable price at Hoop House in Cape Cod, Massachusetts. A 10 x 7 x 12 hoop greenhouse house costs just $ 330 for a set of molded metal tubular supports, door hardware, 6mm greenhouse film / 3-year life, tape, fasteners and planks. You need to buy plywood, lumber for frames, fasteners. The kits are 48 feet long. This year you have the choice between the rounded design and the new Plus 2 Gable Roof Kits that can be delivered by UPS. Sold directly and through Johnny’s Selected Seeds from Albion, Maine.
Poly Panel Structures
The best value for money we’ve found in home garden houses comes from Farm Wholesale (a division of Corrugated Plas-Tech) in Salem, Oregon. They make awnings and Quonset freestanding quarter circle canopy structures and offer timber framed and DIY design structures that are framed with reinforced PVC metal and completely covered in 3.5mm corrugated polyethylene, which costs just $ 0.65 per square foot. and has a three-year UV warranty. It can be recycled too! Our favorite deck mount design is their hinged kit, which comes with a pair of lattice vents, a hanging door, metal-reinforced PVC frames, bench frames and hanging posts, escutcheon, hardware and instructions. At $ 829 for an 8 x 8 x 8 canopy and $ 1149 for an 8 x 8 x 12 canopy, these designs are a significant step up in value, but have a frame that’s strong enough for you to stand and a higher level. match, finish and appearance than film coated kits.
Curved Eaves / Gable Roof Structures
The next step forward in perfection is the curved front eaves, for example from Sunglo Greenhouses in Seattle. They feature aluminum frames and double-layer acrylic plexiglass coverings with a smooth outer sheet glued to a corrugated inner sheet for high strength and 1 1/2 inches of insulating dead space. The panels diffuse light and contain a UV filter that minimizes sunburn to plants (and people) inside. Prices range from just under $ 2,000 for a 5-foot canopy to over $ 7,500 for a commercial home over 15 feet wide and 30 feet long. A 7 1/2 by 12 1/2 feet canopy built to our specifications costs $ 2,300 …All models come with pre-hung aluminum doors, automatic ventilation and bench supports. Sunglo also offers a 12 year warranty!
Sun Decks
Our Favorite Convertible Sun / Screen Garden Houses – Beautiful Design by Sun Porch, Vegetable Factory Inc. from Westport, Connecticut. It’s a sunny, isolated paradise in winter and a cool screen in summer, the concept behind the versatile sun porch. This two-in-one sun shade features a durable aluminum frame (choice of bronze or white) and a GE Lexan insulated roof, which is backed by a 10-year hail protection guarantee. Walls in DR plexiglass, also impact resistant, with 1 inch air space. Both the roof and walls are available with clear or bronze glazing at no additional cost.
The Sun-Porch is a self-assembled porch and is easy to mount on decks, patios or landscaping fixtures. The main advantage for consumers is the QWIK-change window system, which turns an insulated winter solarium into a summer screen. Affordably priced, the 9-by-12-foot Sun-Porch costs $ 4,710.
