UTICA, NY – The Utica College football team snagged the 75th win in the history of the program on Saturday. The Pioneers darted out to a 34-14 lead at the dawning of the fourth quarter, then held off a comeback attempt by visiting St. John Fisher with three straight quarterback sacks in the final minute as Utica prevailed by a 34-28 score in the third annual New York State Tool Believe Bowl at Charles A. Gaetano Stadium.

The win improves Utica’s record back above the .500 mark at 3-2 overall while halting a two game slide. It also lifts the Pioneers to a 1-1 record in the Empire 8, where they currently sit fourth at the conclusion of Saturday’s games.

Utica snagged its 75th win in the 19 year history of the program while also winning a third straight home meeting against St. John Fisher. The Pioneers have defeated the Cardinals at home in 2016, 2018, and 2019 to mark their first three wins in the all-time series against their perennial Empire 8 rivals.

The Pioneers improve to 2-1 in the Believe Bowl since the event’s 2017 inception. The game serves to benefit the missions of the Believe 271 Foundation and the Thea Bowman House.

Senior defensive back Elijah Belle (Plainfield, NJ/Plainfield) wrote his way into the college’s career record books with an interception return touchdown in the second half of the game. His 49 yard runback was his second of the season, and the third of his career. In the process, he became the only Pioneer in program history to run back two in a single season, and he broke Rob Alexander’s career record of two interception return touchdowns in a career. Belle has done all of this in just his last six games played, with his first coming in last year’s ECAC Bowl win.

As a unit, the Pioneer defense kept the Cardinals to just 349 yards total, with just 101 coming on the ground. Turnovers and the pass rush played a major part in the proceedings when the Cardinals had the ball. The Utica defense managed to wrestle away three fumbles from St. John Fisher on the day, while also sacking Fisher quarterback Hunter Walsh eight times. The three fumbles recovered ties a program record, while the eight sacks is tied for the third most in program history alongside a 2015 homecoming win over Ithaca. 

Antonio Scala (Coram, NY/Longwood) and Jordan Weaver (Goshen, NY/Goshen High School) each got to the quarterback twice on the afternoon. Weaver and Jack Derby (Fonda, NY/Fultonville Fonda) each forced a fumble. John Nish (Canastota, NY/Oneida) had an impressive thrteen total tackles, followed by defensive back Anthony Beaubrun (West Hempstead, NY/West Hempstead) with nine.

On offense, Utica was led on the ground by running back Jamarious Morgan (Utica, NY/Thomas R. Proctor). Morgan had his second career 100 yard rushing day in the win, and has eclipsed the century mark in back-to-back home games. He ran for 112 yards and a touchdown this afternoon. In the passing game, the Pioneers were aided by the familiar connection of Logan Wilcox (Utica, NY/Proctor) and Peyton Miller (Chemung, NY/Waverly). Wilcox completed 14 of 27 passes for 170 yards and three touchdowns. Two of those scores were to Miller, who had seven catches for 87 yards. Kevin Warmack (Utica,NY/Utica Notre Dame) made three receptions for 39 yards as the former Notre Dame star continues to round into form as a potent offensive weapon. JJ O’Connor had 27 receiving yards and a touchdown.

Maki Medici (Watervliet, NY/Shaker) punted five times for an average of 39.8 yards. His longest kick of the day eclipsed 50 yards. He also held opponents inside the 20 twice, and did not allow a punt return yard to be recorded by the opponent for yet another week.

Walsh threw for 248 yards for the Cardinals, while Will Blake had 134 yards receiving. Running back Dahmir Pross rushed for 110 yards as Fisher fell to 3-3, and 0-2 in the Empire 8 after also losing to Brockport a week earlier.

The passing games were vibrant for both sides in the early going of the matchup. After Fisher won the coin toss and deferred their option to the second half, the Pioneers received and embarked on a surgical six play drive that went 63 yards. That drive was capped by a touchdown pass from Wilcox to Miller from a distance of fourteen yards, and the Pioneers led 7-0 on their opening series. Fisher responded to tie the score just as quickly as Will Blake caught a 48 yard deep ball from Walsh for an early tying touchdown.

The Pioneers had one more aerial score waiting before the end of the first quarter of play. With 2:14 to go before the end of the frame, Wilcox zipped a ball into the hands of a wide open John James O’Connor (Auburn, NY/Weedsport) for O’Connor’s third receiving score of the year to put the hosts ahead 14-7 after one quarter.

Both sides turned to the ground to pile up points in the second quarter. Walsh scored on a quarterback scramble to re-tie the score at 14-14 early in the quarter. The Pioneers offered their reply with just 29 seconds to go before the break as Morgan plunged into the end zone to cap a drive that started at midfield and re-establish a one touchdown lead. Utica nearly doubled up their advantage before halftime as they recovered a fumble with a short field on the third play of the ensuing series, but the Cardinals effectively defended a reverse play by the Pioneer offense to keep the halftime score at 21-14.

Utica began to pull away towards a prospectively comfortable victory in the third quarter. Belle entered the history books while putting up his team’s first points of the half. With less than two minutes elapsed in the second half, Walsh dropped back to pass and was immediately pressured. That pressure forced Walsh to throw right into the hands of Belle for the interception. Belle then darted down the far sideline for a 49 yard return and his record breaking touchdown to put Utica up 28-14. In the fourth, Utica increased its lead as Wilcox connected with Miller from nine yards out on a pass to fortify a 34-14 lead. That pass finished off an 80 yard scoring drive.

A significant fourth quarter lead for Utica soon gave way to crunch time bedlam. Chris Park became the catalyst for a Cardinal comeback as Walsh hooked up with Park for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to trim Utica’s lead down to just six points.

With the Cardinals threatening to steal the game late, the Pioneers turned to multiple key defensive plays to help slam the door on a multitude of Fisher chances. On the heels of a three-and-out by the Utica offense with just over three minutes to go, the Pioneers got some immediate help to get the ball back. Defensive lineman Jack Derby (Fonda, NY/Fultonville Fonda) forced a fumble on the first play of the series, which Utica recovered in Fisher territory on the 38 yard line.

The Pioneers strung together three straight rushing plays of two yards to chew up the clock and force the Cardinals to burn their final timeout, but again the Utica defense would get tested with just moments left in the contest. After the offense was unsuccessful at converting on fourth down, Scala, Derby, and Robbie Schempp (Webster, NY/Webster Thomas) each dropped Walsh in the backfield once for the Pioneer defense to thwart any possibility of a last ditch rally by the visitors as Utica claimed the Believe Bowl trophy for a second time.

The Pioneers will cap a two-game homestand on Saturday, October 19th against Morrisville. The game will be played as part of Utica College’s 2019 Homecoming Festivities.

Matthew Lombardi (eng. Matthew Lombardi ; born March 18, 1982, in Montreal, Quebec, Canada) is a Canadian professional hockey player playing for the Toronto Maple Leafs National Hockey League team.

Playing career

Matthew Lombardi was born and raised in Montreal. He played for 4 years for the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League (QMJHL) club. He was picked overall 215th in the 2000 NHL Draft by the Edmonton Oilers.Lombardi failed to sign with the Oilers, so he again entered the draft, where he was selected under the overall 90th number by the Calgary Flames.

Lombardi, who played in the 2004 Stanley Cup Playoffs, was injured in a collision with Detroit Red Wings defender Derian Hatcher during one of the matches and was eliminated for several months. The Flames ultimately lost seven games to Tampa in the final series. During the 2004-2005 lockout, Matthew played for the Lowell Devils of the American Hockey League, after the end of the strike, Lombardi returned to the Calgary Flames.

He was a member of the Canadian national team at the 2007 World Cup, which beat Finland (4-2) in the final in Moscow. During the tournament, he became the most productive player of his national team, gaining 12 points.

On March 4, 2009, Lombardi was traded to the Phoenix Coyotes for Olli Jokinen.

On 8 February 2010, he scored 5 points in his 6-1 win against the Edmonton Oilers.

The traditional NHL draft will take place at the Minnesota Wild arena in Saint Paul on Friday June 24th.

The upcoming draft has one clear favorite, and the Russian juniors are likely to be left out of the first round.

1. Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (center forward, Canada)

The one and only Nugent-Hopkins, or RNH as it is called in Canada, is the main favorite of the upcoming draft. For the first time in the past five years, a Canadian child prodigy won first places in the ratings of all scout services, and in the final vote of leading scouts took 9 out of 10 first places.

Due to the small size and blurry start of the season (13 matches without goals in October) WHL leader Red Deer Rebels did not make it to the Canada national team for the World Youth Championship, and, perhaps, it was his skill that was not enough for the “maple leaves” to win the final. However, after the MFM, Nugent-Hopkins gained momentum, scoring 17 goals in 20 decisive games of the season. All in all, the center forward “Red Deer” 106 (31 goals, 75) points in 69 matches.

Strengths: excellent technique, dexterity and vision of the court.Excellent skating, high creativity and efficiency, strong character. Stunning interaction with partners, not a single player’s movement on the ice is left without his attention. Incredible ability to take the puck off an opponent without a power struggle.

Weaknesses: needs to add muscle mass to counter NHL defenders, especially in the corners of the court. A sharp bias towards the playmaker, low sniper skills.

Prospect: NHL first line center forward.

2. Gabriel Landeskog (right winger, Sweden)

The club that chooses Landeskog is likely to have a future team captain for years to come. The Swedish forward became the first European captain in the history of the Ontario Junior League. Gabriel has played 53 games for Kitchener Rangers this season, scoring 66 points (36 goals, 30 assists).An ankle injury slightly oiled the striker’s season, preventing him from playing at the youth world championship. The Swede impressed all the scouts on the tests in Toronto with his adult physique and performance.

Strengths: incredible performance, excellent leadership skills. He plays tenacious power hockey, has a powerful throw and good vision of the court. He is equally good in attack and defense, scores a lot, blocks shots, plays body. Ready for the NHL now.

Weaknesses: in terms of skill level is significantly inferior to RHN and Huberdo, skating is at an average level.

Prospect: safest pick in the draft, future NHL team captain.

Comparison: Mike Richards.

3. Jonathan Huberdo (Center / Left Wing, Canada)

The protagonist of the last Memorial Cup had an incredible season and significantly improved his position in the draft.On account of Huberdo this year’s MVP playoff title and 105 points (43 goals, 62 assists) in the regular season.

Strengths: is a very creative player, confidently plays his team, has an amazing view of the court. He constantly plays with the body, gives all the best in every shift. A smart forward with excellent technique and accurate shooting, he progresses rapidly.

Weaknesses: needs to add muscle mass, especially in the legs, is slow

Prospect : center fighter of the first or second link of an NHL club with advanced attacking and defensive skills.Become a leader on any team in the league.

Comparison: Patrice Bergeron.

4. Adam Larsson (Defender, Sweden)

The best defender in this draft and is likely to retire at number four or even later, as the first picks are determined to strengthen their attacking lines. Despite his young age, he is already one of the best defenders of Elitserien.He also proved his high level at the World Youth Championship, while playing with a knee injury. The scouts’ opinions on Larsson were divided, some consider him the best player in the Swedish championship, and some call him overrated. The next season, most likely, will also spend at Skellefteå.

Strengths: Dimensional, physical strong defender with good passing ability. Accurate and strong throw, perfectly reads the game, correctly chooses a position.

Weaknesses: slightly awkward skating, slow, often losing concentration.

Prospect: player of the first pair of defenders of the NHL club, as well as the first brigade of the majority.

5. Dougie Hamilton (Defender, Canada)

The Niagara defender, who has great skating, had a great season with 58 points (12 goals, 46 assists) in 67 regular season games. Strengths: high mobility, good tackle, hard to go one-on-one. Great skating, playmaker skills.

He could have dropped out of the top ten, but at the end of the season he shot 20 goals in 21 matches.In total, he scored 96 (36 + 60) points in 58 games.

Strengths: overall center forward with good playmaker skills, high efficiency, strong character on and off the ice, plays great defensively, difficult to take the puck away.

Weaknesses: Lack of visible progress over the last year, poor skating, slowness, lack of “healthy anger”.

Strohm has grown rapidly this season with 106 points (33 goals, 73 assists) in 65 games. In January, he was named the best player in the Ontario Hockey League, became the most progressive player in the league (+79 points compared to last year).

Strengths: Fast, agile forward with strong playmaker skills.A sly, smart striker who reads the game perfectly. Excellent technique, accurate quick throw, knows how to fight in the corners of the court, well defended.

Weaknesses: is not physically ready for the NHL, tries to avoid power struggle, plays some matches “sluggishly”, average efficiency.

Prospect: is the team’s leading center forward with 80 points per season.

8.Ryan Murphy (Defender, Canada)

Murphy is a typical midfielder who knows how and loves to play his team. The most creative and fastest defender in this draft. Like Nugent-Hopkins, for not entirely clear reasons did not make it to the MFM. In 63 games of the season, he scored 79 (26 + 53) points, the best defender of the junior world championship.

Strengths: has an incredible ability to go from home to outside with the puck multiple times per game. Excellent skating technique, first pass, puck control.Precise and strong click. The team leads the game in all zones, takes the puck well. Despite the size, he strives to wage a power struggle, hates to lose.

Weaknesses: modest size for the NHL, often sacrifices defensive skills for the sake of his “forays” on the opponent’s goal.

Prospect: A defender with great potential, especially in the majority. First pair player when used correctly.

9. Nathan Bolleu (Defender, Canada)

Collected a decent defender 45 points in 65 games for St. John for the second year in a row and was one of the main creators of the team’s victory in the Memorial Cup.

Strengths: Elite attacking defender with decent technique, great puck control, leading team play. Knows exactly when to throw, when to pass. High efficiency, strong character.

Weaknesses: you need to improve the game at your goal, it is far from ideal when guarding an opponent, as well as when choosing a position. To play in the NHL, you need to gain 7-8 kg.
