What are the different types of lacrosse shoulder pads. How do you choose the right shoulder pad for your position and playing style. What features should you look for in lacrosse shoulder protection. How do lacrosse shoulder pads improve player safety and performance.
Understanding Lacrosse Shoulder Pads: Types and Features
Lacrosse is a dynamic and physical sport that requires proper protective gear to ensure player safety. Among the essential equipment, shoulder pads play a crucial role in safeguarding players from impacts and collisions. Let’s explore the various types of lacrosse shoulder pads and their key features.
Types of Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
- Traditional Shoulder Pads
- Hybrid Shoulder Pads
- Shoulder Liners
Each type of shoulder pad offers different levels of protection and flexibility, catering to various positions and playing styles on the field.
Key Features of Modern Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Contemporary lacrosse shoulder pads have evolved significantly, incorporating advanced technologies and materials to enhance player protection and performance. Some notable features include:
- GeoFlex II™ technology for flexible protection
- NOCSAE standard compliance for chest protection
- T.A.C.™ (Total Adjustable Comfort) system for improved fit
- 7-point stretch zones for enhanced mobility
- Lightweight and low-profile design
These features work together to provide comprehensive protection without sacrificing a player’s range of motion or comfort on the field.
Choosing the Right Lacrosse Shoulder Pads for Your Position
Selecting the appropriate shoulder pads is crucial for maximizing both protection and performance in lacrosse. Different positions on the field have varying requirements when it comes to protective gear.
Attackmen and Physical Players
For attackmen and players who engage in frequent physical contact, traditional shoulder pads are often the preferred choice. These pads offer:
- Layered shoulder caps for enhanced protection
- Extensive coverage over the clavicle and deltoids
- Hard-shell casing over condensed padding
- Optional removable bicep pads for additional protection
The comprehensive coverage provided by traditional shoulder pads is ideal for players who face more physical challenges during gameplay.
Midfielders and Face-off Specialists
Midfielders and face-off specialists often opt for hybrid shoulder pads or shoulder liners. These options provide:
- A balance between protection and mobility
- Lightweight design for quick movements
- Flexible materials that adapt to player movements
The choice between hybrid pads and liners often depends on the player’s specific role and personal preference for protection versus flexibility.
The Importance of Proper Fit in Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Ensuring the correct fit of lacrosse shoulder pads is essential for both protection and performance. Ill-fitting pads can leave vulnerable areas exposed or hinder a player’s movements.
Tips for Achieving the Right Fit
- Measure your chest circumference and compare it to the manufacturer’s sizing chart
- Consider sizing up one whole size when transitioning to newer models like the Cell V
- Ensure the pads sit snugly on your shoulders without restricting arm movement
- Check that the sternum plate covers the chest adequately
- Adjust straps and closures for a secure, comfortable fit
Remember, a properly fitted shoulder pad should feel like a natural extension of your body, providing protection without impeding your performance on the field.
Advancements in Lacrosse Shoulder Pad Technology
The evolution of lacrosse shoulder pads has been driven by a focus on balancing protection with player mobility and comfort. Modern designs incorporate cutting-edge materials and innovative construction techniques to achieve this balance.
GeoFlex II™ Technology
GeoFlex II™ technology represents a significant advancement in lacrosse protective gear. This innovative design offers:
- Flexible protection that adapts to player movements
- Enhanced impact absorption without compromising mobility
- Lightweight materials that reduce overall pad weight
The implementation of GeoFlex II™ technology allows players to maintain their agility and speed while benefiting from robust protection against impacts and collisions.
NOCSAE Standard Compliance
The National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) has established guidelines for chest protection in lacrosse. Modern shoulder pads, such as the STX Cell V, are designed to meet these standards, ensuring:
- Adequate protection against commotio cordis
- Rigorous testing to verify protective capabilities
- Increased player safety during gameplay
Compliance with NOCSAE standards demonstrates a commitment to player safety and provides peace of mind for athletes and their families.
Maintenance and Care of Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Proper maintenance of lacrosse shoulder pads is crucial for ensuring their longevity and continued effectiveness. Regular care not only extends the life of the equipment but also helps maintain its protective properties.
Cleaning and Sanitizing
- Remove removable padding and liners before cleaning
- Hand wash pads with mild soap and cool water
- Air dry completely before reassembling or using
- Use antimicrobial sprays periodically to prevent odor-causing bacteria
Avoid using harsh chemicals or machine washing, as these can damage the protective materials and compromise the integrity of the pads.
Storage and Inspection
- Store shoulder pads in a cool, dry place to prevent mold and mildew growth
- Regularly inspect pads for signs of wear, such as cracks or compressed padding
- Replace pads when they show significant signs of deterioration
Proper storage and regular inspections help ensure that your shoulder pads remain in optimal condition, providing consistent protection throughout their lifespan.
The Role of Shoulder Pads in Injury Prevention
While no piece of equipment can guarantee complete protection from injuries, properly fitted and well-maintained shoulder pads play a crucial role in reducing the risk and severity of injuries in lacrosse.
Common Injuries Mitigated by Shoulder Pads
- Contusions and bruising to the shoulder area
- Clavicle fractures
- Sternum and rib injuries
- Upper back impacts
By absorbing and dispersing impact forces, shoulder pads help protect vulnerable areas of the upper body during collisions, checks, and falls.
Balancing Protection and Performance
Modern shoulder pad designs aim to provide comprehensive protection without sacrificing a player’s ability to perform at their best. Features such as flexible materials, strategic padding placement, and adjustable components allow players to maintain their full range of motion while benefiting from crucial impact protection.
It’s important to note that while shoulder pads are essential for safety, proper technique, adherence to rules, and sportsmanship also play significant roles in injury prevention on the lacrosse field.
Choosing Between Youth and Adult Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
The distinction between youth and adult lacrosse shoulder pads is important, as each category is designed to meet the specific needs and physical characteristics of different age groups.
Youth Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Youth shoulder pads are typically designed with the following considerations:
- More comprehensive coverage to protect developing bodies
- Emphasis on protection over mobility
- Simplified adjustment systems for ease of use
- Lighter weight to accommodate smaller players
For young players learning the game, traditional shoulder pads with ample coverage are often recommended to provide maximum protection as they develop their skills and understanding of the sport.
Adult Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Adult shoulder pads offer more variety in terms of protection levels and styles:
- Options ranging from full traditional pads to minimalist liners
- Advanced adjustment systems for a more customized fit
- Specialized designs for different positions and playing styles
- Integration of high-tech materials for optimal protection and performance
Adult players have the flexibility to choose shoulder pads that best suit their position, playing style, and personal preferences for protection versus mobility.
When transitioning from youth to adult pads, players should reassess their size and protection needs, as adult models may fit and perform differently than their youth counterparts.

How to Buy Lacrosse Shoulder Pads
Lacrosse a contact-heavy sport. To help guard players during game play, protective equipment is a must. Shoulder pads are one of the most vital protective pieces a lacrosse player wears, so finding the right fit is important to help ensure maximum safety and maximum fun.
Lacrosse shoulder pads are designed to protect your shoulder blades, collarbone and sternum while providing additional coverage to your upper back as well. Only men’s lacrosse leagues require players to wear shoulder pads, as women’s lacrosse tries to limit physical play and additional pads can potentially encourage this aspect of the game.
Today’s players have the option of gearing themselves up with traditional shoulder pads, hybrid pads or shoulder liners. Each style offers proficient protection and flexibility, but their differences in coverage make them better suited to different positions.
“I remember, even when I first started playing, that the pads were big and bulky,” says former collegiate lacrosse player and DICK’S Sporting Goods Associate Ryan Wallace on the differing levels of shoulder pad protection. “Pads have come a very far way now.”
TRADITIONAL SHOULDER PADS
Players looking for the most protection and coverage should try traditional shoulder pads. This style of protection provides athletes with layered shoulder caps and ample coverage over the clavicle and deltoids.
Many traditional shoulder pads feature a hard-shell casing over the condensed padding, as well as removable bicep pads. These add-ons are worn like a sleeve and are designed to sit high and snug on the bicep.
Traditional shoulder pads are a favorite among attackmen and more physical
players. Wallace notes that attackmen experience more physical play in lacrosse, so it’s advised that they gear up accordingly.
It is also advised that youth players wear traditional shoulder pads for the added coverage and security while they learn and progress through the lacrosse ranks.
HYBRID SHOULDER PADS
Designed with a sleeker, more streamlined profile, hybrid shoulder pads are a great option for players looking for flexibility while still remaining well-protected. “It’s gotten to a point now where everything is made tighter and more fitting as opposed to the bulkier pads of yesteryear,” Wallace adds.
This style of shoulder pad features anatomically-aligned padding across the chest and collarbones without the layered shoulder caps seen on traditional pads. Hard-shell protection is still sometimes available in hybrids, as well as add-on bicep pads.
Hybrid shoulder pads are a popular choice among midfielders, defensemen and more agility-driven players.
SHOULDER LINERS
Shoulder liners are the lightest option available in lacrosse shoulder protection and feature the least amount of padding. Essentially, shoulder liners are the same as hybrid shoulder pads without the additional bicep pads and offer less reinforced protection throughout the frame. This style of shoulder pads can be great for players who want lighter pads during hot practices or for advanced athletes who are strong enough and well-seasoned in adult lacrosse players.
Despite the fact that shoulder liners are the least restrictive models available, youth players should refrain from wearing this style.
No matter which style you think best suits your playing needs, be sure to look for a set of lacrosse shoulder pads that feature breathable materials for maximum comfort. Also, make sure that the hook-and-loop or buckle strapping system is efficient and workable.
SIZING
Regardless of which style you choose, players should look for shoulder pads that fit snug to the body without restricting movement, while offering ample padding in the sternum and collarbone areas.
“You don’t want your pads riding up into your neck but sadly, you see some kids out there who are improperly fit,” says Wallace. “There are starter kits available, though, where you can purchase a full package of pads which are generally directed toward that smaller youth player.”
Pads are sized by the XS-S-M-L-XL scale, with each brand having their own specific measurements. Be sure to pay attention to their respective size charts. If your shoulder pads are the proper size, the sternum pad will be directly over the chest and not drop too low. The collar should be snug to the body, while still allowing you to move without much restriction.
A NOTE ON RIB PADS
In addition to shoulder pads, there are also rib pads available for more physical players looking for added coverage. Rib pads are worn underneath shoulder pads and are designed to provide coverage to the lower abdomen and midsection. Rib pads are sized in the same fashion as shoulder pads, so complementing your equipment and adding security is an easy process.
Adding rib pads to a youth player’s gear bag can also be beneficial, according to Wallace. “In youth lacrosse, it should be all about protection,” he says. “The added coverage can give athletes and parents a stronger sense of security.”
As is the case with any protective equipment, if you have any questions on lacrosse shoulder pads, be sure to ask a coach or league official to ensure you’ll have the right lacrosse gear to help keep you safe and legal to play this fast-paced sport.
Finding the right shoulder pads should be a top priority for lacrosse players at every level. Now that you know what to look for and how to find the right fit, you’re ready to travel coast-to-coast with confidence this upcoming lacrosse season.
The Ultimate Lacrosse Shoulder Pads Buyers Guide 2021-22
While this may not be the longest or most product-packed buyers guide, shoulder pads are the most important piece of gear for your safety this upcoming lacrosse season.
Under the new shoulder pad ruling, players across levels (including college lacrosse) will be required to wear shoulder pads with the new NOCSAE ND200 approval in order to play. This move comes in order to increase the safety of players and create additional needed protection for the chest and heart.
Therefore, it’s time to ditch those cut-down shoulder pad liners you’ve been using for the past five seasons and maybe even got from your older cousin who played. It’s time to invest in a piece of equipment that will keep you safer and healthier in order to play the game we all love for longer.
While there aren’t too many offerings out there that fit this standard yet, I’m here to break down a few of the top offerings from your favorite trusted brands.
Lacrosse shoulder pads Buyers Guide 2021-22
Maverik Max EKG Speed Shoulder Pad
Maverik has made trusted protective gear for many, many years, but its latest additions to the shoulder pad world make an even bigger protective impact. The Maverik Max EKG Speed Shoulder pads feature several safety attributes, including EKG (External Kardic Guard) technology as visible on the front of the shoulder pad. Despite having added protection, these shoulder pads are still quite streamline to fit any player’s playing style.
Another awesome feature in these pads is the ANAFORM padding to protect both the spine and chest from any checks or shots that may come your way. These are a great option as you enter the shoulder pad buying market as they are ND200 certified.
Looking for something with a bit more protection and size? Here are a few other shoulder pads from Maverik that are also ND200 certified:
True Temper Lacrosse Zerolyte Shoulder Pad Liner
While True Temper is still a new contender in the protection game, it put together a great new option with the Zerolyte Shoulder Pad Liner that meets the new NOCSAE ND200 standard. I personally have used these pads for several months now and really like the weight and flexibility of the pad. I personally prefer the liner style as it offers me the most flexibility in my game.
The front of this pad features advanced ZRB technology to offer you the most protection to the chest area. The Zerolyte shoulder pad liner is yet another great option when shopping for your new pickup this season.

STX Cell V Shoulder Pad Liner
Looking for something really low profile that won’t slow you down? These Cell V Shoulder Pad Liners from STX might just be the option for you. Meeting the new NOCSAE standard and remaining lightweight and extremely mobile seems like a great mix to me, not to mention they are an updated version of the always-loved Cell protection line. With the GeoFlex II protection in these pads, you’re sure to be safe in the hands of STX.
These even feature a seven-point stretch zone system to allow you to customize and move these pads to your ultimate comfort. There’s not much to dislike about these pads at all. Give these a look when making your next lacrosse safety purchase!
Looking for an STX pad with even more added protection? Check out the STX Cell Shoulder Pads or the Stx Shadow Pro Shoulder Pads.
Warrior Evo Shoulder Pad
Chances are, no matter how long you’ve played, you have used a pair of Warrior shoulder pads at one point or another. Maybe they were your favorites? Maybe they are your go to brand? The good news for you is that Warrior brings a great new offering to the table in the Evo Shoulder Pad that meets the NOCSAE ND200 certification. From the sleek design to the impact sternum protection, these will suit almost any player this season.
These pads also feature Wartech liner to keep you extra cool and ventilated while playing. I personally love the design of these pads simply because of how customizable they are with multiple removable padding sections. Surely another great option to add to your list!
Nike Vapor Shoulder Pad Liner
Nike has you covered with protection and style in their new Nike Vapor Liners. From the solid color design of these to the Nike swoosh front and center, these things look mean.
Style points for sure, but that’s not why we’re here. These Liners are NOCSAE ND200 certified and feature a sternum protection system that won’t restrict the player at all to encourage comfort while playing. We all know how annoying it can be to wear a pair of uncomfortable shoulder pads, but with these you won’t even have to worry about that.
Their minimalistic safety design offers the right protection in the right areas without any added fluff to get in your way. Big thumbs up to Nike on these Shoulder Pad Liners! Bonus points for all you Nike buffs as well.
Again I know there aren’t many options out there at the moment for the new ND200 certification, but don’t let that drive you away from some of these great options listed above. Unlike a lot of our other gear, a new pair of certified shoulder pads this season is an absolute must in order to stay safe and keep playing the game. I suggest trying several different shoulder pads on before buying if you can as each person will have their own fit preferences when it comes to shoulder pads. Get a pair you feel comfortable and safe in. Good luck, and happy shoulder pad hunting!

Flat Pad: Low-profile shoulder pad design sits low across the players shoulder minimizing interference with the rotational range of the helmet. Rigid belts route forces away from the point of impact by converting the entire arch into a large-scale, shock absorbing system.
Air Management: Attenuates impact energy on a cushion of air within semi-sealed chambers. Energy dispersal occurs through spreading of impact forces within a large volume of air slowly released from the liner at a controlled rate.
Composite Sub-Arch: Specially designed for use in flat pads and comprised of a plastic reinforced foam sandwich encapsulated in a non-skid material to provide additional cushioning over the shoulder and stability to the arch-liner interface.

Kask Wasabi helmet review: All-weather versatility with an aero bonus
The new Kask Wasabi is built around the same concept as the company’s older Infinito model, with a large panel you can slide back and forth to open and close the central vents on the fly. On the Infinito, Kask billed this more as an “aero on demand” sort of feature. Aero efficiency is still part of the story with the Wasabi, but this time around, the core message is more about temperature regulation.
“The Wasabi ensures temperature regulation like no other helmet thanks to its adjustable airflow system,” reads the marketing spiel. “With the push of a finger, a centralized vent can be opened when conditions heat up or closed when they cool down for a 1.5 °C (2.7 °F) internal temperature increase when riding at the same speed.”
When the vent is closed, the front, sides, and top of the helmet are almost completely closed off to the elements, with only the six rear exhaust ports left unobstructed to release any hot air. Sliding the panel back, however, reveals a large V-shaped vent (technically it’s three, but it’s effectively one) right at your forehead, plus another opening higher up that’s akin to a hood scoop on a car.
The airflow characteristics of the Wasabi change dramatically depending on the position of the sliding panel.
Inside, there’s not only a generous array of internal channeling, but also some prominent gaps in between the two layers of the helmet to help keep air flowing through. Kask hasn’t skimped at all on the padding, either, with much more of the interior covered in squishy bits than usual, and natural Merino wool-blend fabrics against your scalp.
Out back, Kask equips the Wasabi with its usual Octo Fit retention system with adjustable occipital pads and a very wide range of height adjustment, plus its now-trademark synthetic leather chin strap for comfort. The straps are fixed below the ears, but instead of using some sort of molded plastic bit at the intersection, Kask just stitches everything together.
The whole thing has a notably trim profile, and the sextet of monochrome matte finishes only add to the subdued appearance.
Kask offers the Wasabi in three sizes and six colors. Actual weight for a CPSC-approved medium sample is 315 grams, and retail price is a hefty US$350 / AU$409 / £269 / €300.
Two helmets in one
In mountain towns, “shoulder season” describes the time in between summer and winter, when it’s not yet snowy enough to ski, but quite chilly for riding (especially in the morning). When you pile on top the added weather variability of big changes in altitude, choosing the right clothing isn’t always a straightforward affair, and the same goes for helmets.
It’s of course easy to add or remove a cap depending on the conditions, but it’s not the easiest or safest thing to do while you’re rolling, and my guess is there isn’t a single person reading this right now who hasn’t started a descent and then pulled over after quickly realizing they could use another layer.
That’s not a problem with the Wasabi.
The sliding panel is much easier to operate than the one on the old Infinito model.
I did nearly all of my testing during the month of October, and a typical ride saw me heading out the door when temperatures were around 7 °C (45 °F), climbing up a few hundred meters, and then diving back down into town right as things warmed up past 21 °C (70 °F).
Almost without fail, I started each of those rides with the Wasabi’s main panel snapped shut, where it does a surprisingly good job of keeping your head reasonably warm. It’s not as a warm as a proper cap (particularly since your ears are still exposed), but even just getting rid of the wind chill up there is remarkably effective.
I invariably then slid the panel open once I started climbing. You can immediately feel the air rushing over the top of your head when you do. It’s not as airy as a dedicated summer helmet, mind you, but the airflow is still pretty good even at moderate speeds. When it came time to descend, closing the panel again required just a flick of my hand. And as a nice bonus — and as I’ve noticed with most nominally aero helmets over the years — the Wasabi is also pretty quiet at high speeds with very reasonable levels of wind noise.
Should you be sufficiently hardy to ride in truly frigid temperatures, it’s worth noting that Kask even offers a full winter liner — earflaps and all — for the Wasabi.
The interior of the helmet is generously padded, and feels that way on your head.
Kask has thankfully learned some lessons from the old Infinito in terms of how the sliding panel physically operates. On the Infinito, that section of plastic was totally smooth and slick so there was nothing to grab on to, and it also didn’t take very long before the movement started to feel a little loose and sloppy. But on the Wasabi, the upper vent provides a perfect grab point for your fingers, and despite literally spending hours mindlessly opening and closing the thing to simulate long-term wear, it still operates as good as new.
Granted, I didn’t toss in any grit or mud into the mix, but given the cost, I suspect the vast majority of these will stick to the road, and water doesn’t seem to have any effect on the mechanism.
Overall, the temperature versatility of the Wasabi is quite impressive, but there are limits. Although you don’t need to be moving that fast to feel air moving through the interior, there’s still an awful lot of closed shell on your head, leaving less open area for heat to escape during hard and slow climbs. Going with that, both tech editor Dave Rome and I noticed that moisture management on the Wasabi seems better than we’ve found on other Kask helmets, which is likely related to both the oversized vent right at your forehead and the wool pad material.
Nevertheless, steep climbs in the heat will still eventually result in some sweat dripping down your face since Kask hasn’t incorporated any sort of advanced sweat management like what Bell and Giro use (and, to some extent, Specialized). Adding insult to injury is the fact there’s nowhere to stash your sunglasses, either.
Rear coverage is quite decent for a dedicated road helmet, but there’s also a lot of covered area without any venting.
I think the Wasabi is a little polarizing aesthetically, too, especially with the monochrome matte finishes. That smooth exterior may be good for aero efficiency, but I still sometimes look in the mirror and see Toad from the Mario Brothers universe.
Other nitpicks? The retention system is super adjustable (and it plays well enough with most eyewear models I tried), but the rear straps run through the occipital pads, and the height adjustment doesn’t stay in place. As a result, there’s a little more fiddling required every time you put the Wasabi on as compared to other helmets that do a better job of retaining your settings.
Good luck scratching an itch on your head, too, and I’m sorry, Kask, but that “hi-viz” feature is nothing more than a reflective sticker on the rear.
Weight weenies will invariably note that the Wasabi isn’t exactly the lightest helmet, either. That moving panel is neat, but it also adds a fair bit of complication. Granted, 315 g doesn’t sound like a lot on paper (and Dave’s AS/NZ-approved sample is lighter at 280 g), but a true ultralight helmet like the POC Ventral Lite sure feels a lot different back-to-back. I dare say your neck might notice an extra 100 g atop your head after several hours in the saddle, too.
In case you’re wondering, there’s no good place to stash sunglasses when wearing the Wasabi.
Comfort-wise, though, it’s hard to complain. I’m usually happiest in more ovoid helmets, and the Kask sits more at the rounder end of the spectrum. However, fiddliness and all, the high level of adjustability on the Octo Fit retention system nevertheless makes for an appropriately snug fit free of pressure points. That natural padding material lends a particularly cozy feel on my shaved head, too, and unlike some other performance-minded helmets, there’s no shortage of padding in general.
Unanswered questions
Whereas the old Infinito was billed at the time as Kask’s premier aero road helmet, that role has now been filled by the newer Utopia. Kask still describes the Wasabi as being aerodynamically efficient — and in particular, with aero characteristics that only differ by a single watt at 50 km/h when the vent is open or closed, unlike the Infinito — but those claims aren’t as overt as they once were.
In fact, Kask declined to provide any real aero data at all for this review, despite multiple requests, referring me instead to the somewhat vacuous marketing video that only describes that the helmet was tested in a wind tunnel at multiple head positions and yaw angles. So is the Wasabi aero? Beats me, but you’d think that if it was, Kask would be more than eager to declare as such.
The retention system is highly adjustable and quite comfortable. And while there’s some interference with eyewear arms, the way the retention system is shaped makes it pretty easy to tuck those arms underneath without much issue.
There’s also the question of safety. Kask has steadfastly resisted market pressure to incorporate MIPS or any equivalent rotational energy management system into any of its cycling helmets, repeatedly calling into doubt the effectiveness of that low-friction liner. Instead, the company — along with Rudy Project, and perhaps others — has embraced a European-based rotational impact test called WG11 that is claimed to be “an objective method, based on scientific sources, for measuring the performance of its helmets against rotational impacts.”
Naturally, the Wasabi passes the WG11 test, and if the test is as valid as the company claims, the Wasabi is perhaps just as good as if it incorporated MIPS. Even so, this sure seems like an uphill battle in terms of public perception. Maybe the benefits of MIPS really are as questionable as Kask claims, but I have a hard time imagining the company isn’t losing sales because of it.
Even if you question MIPS’s in-house claims, there’s a growing contingent of buyers that are placing more weight on third-party university tests from Virginia Tech. To date, Virginia Tech has only tested one Kask bicycle helmet model — the Valegro — but it only scored a middling 3/5 rating. The Wasabi is obviously a very different helmet in terms of its design, but take that as you will.
As always, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but the Wasabi still strikes me as a little more plain than what I usually expect from Kask.
The perfect amount of bite, or not spicy enough?
I’ve always been a big fan of things that can capably fulfill multiple roles and purposes (probably related to me never having as many Transformers as I wanted when I was a kid), and the Kask Wasabi most definitely checks that box. It’s admirably warm when the vent is closed, surprisingly cool when it’s open, and switching between the two modes could hardly be easier.
But I still wouldn’t consider it a great choice for properly hot and humid conditions — particularly at lower speeds — there are some question marks about its safety, it’s quite expensive, and also on the heavier side.
Don’t get me wrong — I like it. Quite a lot, in fact, and if you have similarly variable weather conditions where you ride, I suspect you might feel the same. But what’s that convenience worth to you, and what are you willing to give up to get it?

〜 How to choose a pillow for healthy sleep and relaxation? • Articles Epicenter
A regular pillow is just as important for a comfortable sleep as a mattress or bedding. Considering that the range of these products on the market is now incredibly large, they should be chosen especially carefully, taking into account the composition, size, shape and individual characteristics of those who will use them.
Cushion height
Sleeping on a pillow of insufficient height or without it in most cases leads to constant tension in the cervical spine, curvature of the vertebrae, pain in the head and back.A product that is too tall for resting causes discomfort and muscle fatigue. A comfortable and high-quality pillow should not only provide comfort during sleep, but also support the head and neck in the most natural position.
The height of the pillow in most cases should correspond to the shoulder width of the person (on average 14-15 cm) who plans to use the product. It will not be superfluous to take into account the peculiarities of the posture in which the resting person sleeps. If the main length of time for sleeping is on the back, it is better to choose a pillow lower, if on the side, a higher model will do.And do not forget that a hard mattress should be combined with a low pillow, a soft one, on the contrary, with a high one.
Shape and rigidity
The shape of the pillow and the level of firmness in it can greatly affect the quality of rest. Let’s take a closer look at the most convenient options for these products for various positions during sleep:
- – square models of medium hardness are best suited for those who like to sleep on their backs, and soft counterparts for those who like to rest on their stomach;
- – those who often turn over in their sleep and like to rest on their side should pay attention to hard rectangular pillows;
- – round pillows most often have a decorative purpose, but there are also those that are suitable for sleeping for people with individual preferences and special needs;
- – Triangular or travel pillows with cutouts for the neck are an excellent solution for a short rest during the day or while traveling, but they are clearly not suitable for a full night’s sleep;
- – if none of the existing pillow options suits you, check out the range of modern orthopedic pillows, most of which consist of many sections and have an irregular roll-shaped shape with notches that provide support for the neck and head in the most correct position from an anatomical point of view.
Sewing elements
Poor quality sewing elements significantly reduce the life of the pillow. When choosing such products, carefully examine them and check the tightness of the seams, the operation of the zippers, the quality of the fabric and, if possible, the filler.
The seams should be small, but at the same time strong, the fabric should be free from large punctures from the needle and tight enough not to let the filler fibers out.
Filler type
Pillow manufacturers actively use both natural and synthetic materials as fillers, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. The list of natural fillers includes down, feathers, buckwheat husks, rice hulls, hop cones, natural latex, flax and hemp fibers, sheep wool, cotton, silk and others. Synthetic materials for filling pillows: silicone, artificial latex, holofiber, synthetic winterizer, materials with memory effect and many similar raw materials. Which of the existing fillers to choose is up to you, but first it doesn’t hurt to find out what characteristics the listed materials have.
A pillow filled with down and feathers will always be one of the best means for a comfortable sleep. Such products provide excellent support for the head and neck, and are highly breathable.
The choice of the optimal feather to down ratio is entirely up to the personal preference of the user. For example, if you prefer a hard sleeping place, the percentage of feathers in the pillow should be high, and the product itself should be quite heavy. If you want soft head support, choose a lightweight and voluminous model with a lot of fluff.
Pillows with such a filler are not at all suitable for people suffering from allergies, because fluff particles can cause an attack of illness at any time. Another drawback: over time, microscopic mites can settle in the feathers of the pillow, a fungus can appear, so it needs careful care, timely drying and cleaning of the filler.
Since regular use of down and feather-based pillows can cause them to lose their original shape, it is necessary to periodically knock them down by loosening the filler.
Pillows with wool are not only comfortable, they can also have a positive effect on human health in case of problems with the musculoskeletal system. At least, many doctors and manufacturers of sleeping textiles say so.
Such pillows quickly warm in winter, but at the same time they “breathe” well due to the presence of air between the fibers, therefore they are perfect for summer vacations.
The disadvantage of woolen pillows is that the filler can roll off after a few months of use.It is important to remember that such products are not suitable for those with asthma or allergies.
Extremely soft pillows made from lightweight Silk Linen are simply indispensable for people who are allergic to down and feathers. Natural silk (due to the content of natural protein – sericin) does not cause allergic reactions, does not attract dust mites, does not smell and does not roll. In addition, this unique natural material is able to adapt to the ambient temperature and maintain an ideal microclimate for the human body.
Sometimes silk pillows are made with the addition of silicone fibers, which gives them extra rigidity.
The disadvantage of such products is the high price.
The advantages of pillows with vegetable fillers : have aromatherapy properties and thus allow you to relax faster; massage the scalp and perfectly follow its contours; breathe well and dry quickly; do not cause allergies.
Pillow with buckwheat husk Eco-standard, color, 40×60 cm, Ecopillow
Disadvantages: short service life – on average 2 years; the filler of such products rustles slightly, which not everyone likes at night.
Natural latex is made from the foamed resin of the tropical Hevea tree. This material is elastic, but at the same time soft, it supports the head and neck well. The pillow with it perfectly adjusts to the shape of the body and gradually returns to its original shape when the person lifts his head.
A latex pillow can last about 20 years without losing its properties, but such products are very expensive, which is their main disadvantage.
Cotton wool is the most affordable natural filling material. These pillows are soft and pleasant to the touch, do not cause allergies. The main disadvantage is the tendency to download, as a result of which the products deteriorate quickly enough and become unusable for regular use.
Sintepon is an inexpensive filler with a wide range of advantages. It does not cause allergies, does not smell, and does not get ticks in it. Service life – 7-10 years. In addition, padding polyester pillows are easy to clean and machine washable.
Comforrel is a popular artificial filler made of many fluffy balls. The pillow filled with a comfortel does not cause allergies, perfectly retains its shape and is easy to wash.
Holofiber is a filler made of hollow polyester fibers twisted in the form of springs. This material is used not only as a filler for pillows, including orthopedic ones, but also as insulation for work clothes, products for newborns and children.
This material is very light and hygienic, warm, durable, does not require special care, does not cause allergies and is inexpensive at the same time.
Pillow with holofiber “Immunity”, 50×70 cm, Zastelli
Holofiber-filled pillows are washable up to 40 ° C.
Pillows made of microgel are a lot like down pillows – they are soft, light and elastic, quickly regain their shape after use. Other important advantages of such products are moisture resistance, breathability and the ability to create a comfortable microclimate for sleeping.
Silicone pillows are distinguished by their durability, hypoallergenicity, affordability, the ability to quickly recover their shape and increased elasticity. The more you knock them down, the more voluminous they become.

Microfiber is considered to be an artificial analogue of down that does not cause allergic reactions. The material based on ultrafine fibers is able to maintain lightness and softness throughout its entire service life. In addition, it does not require special maintenance, does not absorb odors and does not collect dust. Disadvantages – low hygroscopicity and tendency to electrify.
A material such as polyester fiber holds its original shape well, does not cause allergies, does not knock or roll, does not absorb moisture, is good for air permeability and has an affordable price ..

Memory foam cushions respond to pressure and heat by adapting to the contours of the head and neck. If you press on a product of this type with your hand, it will not spring, but will slowly adjust to the shape of your palm.It will return to its original form only 1-2 seconds after the hand is removed.
These properties provide excellent support for the neck in the most natural position for it and additional comfort during rest.
Memory foam pillows are hard and soft. They are made on the basis of synthetic foams (polyurethane) or latex (memorialatex). Under no circumstances should the products be washed, since the memory effect is lost under the influence of water.

Selection of orthopedic pillows
Orthopedic pillows are designed taking into account the anatomical features of the human body and optimal sleeping positions, therefore, they provide the most correct distribution of the load on the spine and guarantee a healthy rest.
Such products are selected taking into account the weight, height and width of the shoulders of the future owner. As a general rule, follow the instructions of your orthopedic surgeon or check the manufacturer’s data. Remember, the fabric and seams of the orthopedic pillow must be strong and of high quality, and the filling must be evenly distributed throughout the entire product.

22.Processing the lining and shoulder pads – Section 2 – Sewing technology
PROCESSING THE LINING
The lining is processed in the following sequence.
The hanger is processed first. A strip of fabric is folded on both sides by 0.7 cm, placing one folded edge on the other so that the width of the hanger in the finished form is 0.7 cm. The line is made in the middle. The hanger can be cut from a special piece.
To process the holder, fold a strip of lining fabric in half along the part and grind it with a seam 0.7 – 1.0 cm wide. The holder is turned out, straightening the seam, and fold it in half along its length. The fold of the part is made in the form of a triangle. The end of the holder is secured with transverse stitches, forming a button loop. The fasteners are placed across the holder: the first is at the base of the triangle, the second is at a distance of 1.5-2 cm from the first. The length of the bartacks is 0.5 – 0.7 cm.
The processing of the lining begins by stitching wedges or extensions to the main parts from the side of the extensions with a seam 1.0 cm wide. zigzag stitching on the right side.
Pockets are processed on the shelves (see here).
A middle seam is made on the back lining. If the lining of the product is stitched along the bottom, to turn the product onto the front side, part of the middle seam of the back is left unstitched. Then the shoulder, side cuts, front and elbow cuts of the sleeves are grinded. The middle parts of the front or elbow sections are left unstripped in an area 15 – 18 cm long.
A hanger is stitched to the neck cut with a triple reverse stitch.
The sleeve lining is sewn into the armholes of the garment lining.
The width of all seams is 1 cm.
In the lining without inner pockets, at a distance of 2 – 2.5 cm from the upper edge of the neckline in the middle of the back, a trademark is sewn up.
Iron the finished liner.
PROCESSING OF INSULATING PADDING AND SHOULDER PADS
Batting pad is made in the form of separate parts: from two layers – in the upper part (up to the thigh line in products for adults and not reaching 4 – 5 cm to the lower edges in children’s products – up to size 30), from one layer – in the bottom.
Batting layers are connected to each other on a grinder or a special machine in the back – along the shoulder and side cuts, in the shelves – along the side cuts.
The side and shoulder sections are machine connected with a knife before the gasket is connected to the product or during connection.
Upper shoulder on masonry (Fig. 63, a) are used to give a more stable and regular shape to the shoulder section of the product. In products of different designs, the height of the shoulder pads may be different, sometimes products are processed without them.
The treatment of the shoulder pads begins by placing a layer of cotton wool between two pieces cut from linen. At the outer edge, the thickness of the wool layer is 0.8 – 1.0 cm, towards the oval edge, the thickness is reduced to nothing. The stitch of the shoulder pads is performed on a machine with a zigzag stitch on the side of the lower layer: the first line is placed parallel to the outer edge at a distance of 0.5 cm from it, the rest are oval; the distance between the lines is 1.0 cm. Pieces of soft fabric are placed on the overlays from above from the side of the back and glued on the press or stitched with one line on the machine.By ironing on a special press or iron, the pads are given the appropriate shape (Fig. 63, b).
Manufacturing of shoulder pads from polyurethane foam (foam rubber) consists of cutting out parts and then pressing the oval edges of the pads on a press with a special pad.
Roller skates (Fig. 63, c) are used for a smooth transition of the shoulder section of the product to the sleeve. The skates are cut out of batting at an angle of 45 ‘to the quilting stitches in the form of strips, 4 cm wide.
CONNECTING THE SIDE PADDER, SHOULDER PADS AND SLEEVES WITH PRODUCT
Sew on the side gasket to the seam allowances. with them earlier.
Shoulder pads are placed on the side of the product so that their middle is aligned with the shoulder seam, and the outer cuts of the lining protrude 1 cm beyond the level of the sleeves and armholes. The shoulder pads are connected to the sleeve stitching seam from the side of the sleeves at a distance of 0.1 cm from the stitching seam on a marking machine or by hand marking stitches 1.5 cm long, capturing the top layer of the lining together with cotton wool. The beginning and end of the lines are fixed. The inner edges of the shoulder pads are sewn to the side gasket over the shoulder seams with 5-6 manual oblique stitches 1.0 cm long.
The roller skates are placed on the side of the sleeves so that their middle length is aligned with the shoulder seam. One of the longitudinal cuts is aligned with the cuts of the seam for stitching the sleeve into the armhole. The skates are sewn to the seams where the sleeves are sewn in on a special marking machine along with the upper shoulder pads.
Soft pad in removable denture
Removable dentures sometimes cause discomfort, causing some discomfort during the habituation period. In this case, the special soft pads for dentures come to the rescue, which fix the denture in the oral cavity and prevent any discomfort.
Who is the denture pad prescribed for?
The soft pad for removable dentures is only needed by those who use removable dentures. Anchoring pads like this prevent nuisances such as:
- rubbing of the oral mucosa,
- foreign object sensation,
- the occurrence of irritation on the inner surface of the oral cavity,
- problems with chewing,
- violation of diction,
- Poor fixation of the prosthesis, prolapse.
Due to the relatively low thickness of , the retaining pads for dentures do not change the bite. Also, they do not change the taste of food and do not interfere with speech. The use of soft pad under dentures helps to get rid of all unpleasant sensations, which is why dentists advise using them immediately after the end of the prosthetics, especially if the procedure was difficult and it was not possible to perfectly fit the denture so that it fits snugly enough to the gums.
Advantages and disadvantages of soft retaining pads for dentures.
The advantages of using a soft pad under a removable denture include:
- Shortening the adaptation time to removable dentures,
- additional gingival retention,
- the possibility of the simultaneous use of other means for fixation or treatment,
- prevention of mucosal inflammation,
- do not change the height of the bite,
- can be used even with deformities of the dentition,
- versatility and safety.
The denture pad has almost no flaws. The disadvantages include only a hypothetical probability of an allergic reaction to the material, but such cases are very rare.
When you can and should use a soft pad for removable dentures.
Pads for dental prostheses in Moscow are recommended during the period of patient getting used to the prosthesis. Also, the dentist may recommend using them in such cases:
- for anomalies in the structure of the jaw that interfere with the full wearing of prostheses,
- in case of chafing and inflammation of the mucous membrane,
- with age-related transformations of soft tissues,
- in case of malfunctioning of the salivary glands (excessive or insufficient secretion),
- for malocclusion, when it is necessary to change the position of the removable structure.
Pads for removable dentures can also be prescribed for mucosal damage due to some kind of injury, for example, a burn. Then soft pad will protect the tissue from additional impact on the wound of the prosthesis, thereby ensuring a faster recovery.
Contraindications to the use of a soft pad under a removable denture.
A key contraindication to the use of Anchoring Spacers for dentures may be hypersensitivity to any component. After all, each organism is individual in its own way, which is why even hypoallergenic products are capable of causing an allergic reaction in some.
Do not use the denture pad when the removable denture has expired or is damaged.
Soft pads for dentures: how to use them.
For proper fixation, we advise you to observe the following operating rules:
- keep the denture clean,
- adjust the product with scissors,
- remove the protective film before use,
- After placing the soft gasket on the surface of the structure, it is necessary to eliminate all gaps and air bubbles.
