What are the most significant mass shootings in recent US history. How have these events shaped public discourse on gun violence. What measures have been proposed or implemented to address the issue of mass shootings in America. How do US gun laws compare to those of other developed nations.
Defining Mass Shootings: Understanding the Scope of the Problem
Mass shootings have become an increasingly prevalent and concerning issue in the United States. But what exactly constitutes a mass shooting? The definition can vary depending on the source, but generally, it refers to an incident where multiple people are shot or killed in a single location or series of locations in close proximity.
The FBI defines a mass shooting as an incident where four or more people are killed, not including the shooter. However, other organizations may use different criteria, such as including incidents where four or more people are injured, regardless of fatalities.
Key factors in defining mass shootings:
- Number of victims (killed or injured)
- Location of the incident
- Motivation of the shooter
- Time frame of the event
Understanding the definition of mass shootings is crucial for accurately tracking and analyzing these events. It helps researchers, policymakers, and the public comprehend the scale of the problem and work towards effective solutions.
Recent High-Profile Mass Shootings: A Closer Look at Tragic Events
The United States has experienced numerous high-profile mass shootings in recent years, each leaving a lasting impact on communities and the nation as a whole. Here are some of the most notable incidents:
El Paso Walmart Shooting (August 3, 2019)
On August 3, 2019, a gunman opened fire at a Walmart in El Paso, Texas, killing 23 people and injuring 23 others. The shooter, identified as Patrick Crusius, allegedly targeted Hispanic individuals and was charged with federal hate crimes.
Dayton, Ohio Shooting (August 4, 2019)
Just hours after the El Paso shooting, another mass shooting occurred in Dayton, Ohio. Nine people were killed and 27 were injured when a gunman opened fire in the Oregon District, a popular nightlife area. The shooter, Connor Betts, was killed by police within 32 seconds of the first shots being fired.
Parkland School Shooting (February 14, 2018)
On Valentine’s Day in 2018, a former student opened fire at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Seventeen people, including 14 students and three staff members, were killed, and 17 others were injured. The shooter, Nikolas Cruz, was arrested and later pleaded guilty to all charges.
Las Vegas Shooting (October 1, 2017)
The deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history occurred on October 1, 2017, when Stephen Paddock opened fire on a crowd attending the Route 91 Harvest music festival in Las Vegas. Fifty-eight people were killed, and hundreds more were injured. Paddock fired from a room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel before taking his own life.
These tragic events have sparked intense debates about gun control, mental health, and public safety measures in the United States.
Analyzing Patterns and Trends: What Can We Learn from Mass Shooting Data?
By examining data on mass shootings, researchers and policymakers can identify patterns and trends that may help prevent future tragedies. Here are some key findings from recent studies:
Frequency of Mass Shootings
Data shows that the frequency of mass shootings in the United States has increased in recent years. While definitions and methodologies may vary, most studies agree that these events are becoming more common.
Location Trends
Mass shootings can occur in various settings, but some locations appear to be more common targets:
- Schools and educational institutions
- Workplaces
- Places of worship
- Public spaces (e.g., shopping centers, entertainment venues)
Demographic Patterns
Research has identified certain demographic patterns among mass shooters:
- The majority of perpetrators are male
- Many have a history of domestic violence or other criminal behavior
- Mental health issues are often present, but not always a direct cause
Weapon Types
Semi-automatic firearms, particularly assault-style rifles, are frequently used in mass shootings due to their high capacity magazines and rapid-fire capabilities.
Understanding these patterns can help inform prevention strategies and policy decisions aimed at reducing the occurrence of mass shootings.
The Impact of Mass Shootings: Examining the Aftermath and Long-Term Consequences
Mass shootings have far-reaching effects that extend beyond the immediate tragedy. The impact of these events can be felt for years, even decades, after they occur. Here are some of the ways mass shootings affect individuals, communities, and society as a whole:
Psychological Trauma
Survivors, witnesses, and first responders often experience long-lasting psychological trauma, including post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. The emotional toll can extend to family members, friends, and even those who were not directly involved but feel a connection to the event.
Community Resilience
In the wake of a mass shooting, affected communities often come together to support one another and rebuild. This can lead to increased social cohesion and the development of support networks. However, it can also result in lasting changes to the community’s sense of safety and security.
Policy Changes
Mass shootings often spark intense debates about gun control and public safety measures. In some cases, these events have led to policy changes at local, state, or national levels. For example, the Parkland shooting prompted several states to pass new gun control measures and led to the creation of the March for Our Lives movement.
Economic Impact
The financial costs associated with mass shootings can be substantial. These may include:
- Medical expenses for victims
- Increased security measures
- Legal costs
- Loss of business in affected areas
- Long-term care and support for survivors
Understanding the full impact of mass shootings is crucial for developing comprehensive strategies to prevent future tragedies and support those affected by these events.
Gun Control Debates: Examining Arguments For and Against Stricter Regulations
The issue of gun control is highly contentious in the United States, with passionate arguments on both sides of the debate. Mass shootings often reignite these discussions, leading to calls for stricter regulations or, conversely, arguments for protecting Second Amendment rights. Let’s examine some of the key points in this ongoing debate:
Arguments for Stricter Gun Control
- Reducing access to firearms could decrease the number and severity of mass shootings
- Stronger background checks and waiting periods may prevent potentially dangerous individuals from obtaining guns
- Banning or restricting high-capacity magazines and assault-style weapons could limit the damage inflicted in mass shooting events
- Other developed countries with stricter gun laws have lower rates of gun violence
Arguments Against Stricter Gun Control
- The Second Amendment protects the right to bear arms
- Law-abiding citizens should have the right to defend themselves
- Criminals will find ways to obtain guns regardless of laws
- Mental health issues and societal factors, rather than gun availability, are the root causes of mass shootings
The gun control debate remains complex and emotionally charged. Finding common ground and implementing effective policies that address public safety concerns while respecting constitutional rights continues to be a significant challenge for policymakers and society as a whole.
Mental Health and Mass Shootings: Exploring the Connection and Potential Solutions
The relationship between mental health and mass shootings is a topic of ongoing research and debate. While it’s important to note that most individuals with mental health conditions are not violent, mental health issues have been identified as a factor in some mass shooting cases. Understanding this connection can help inform prevention strategies and support services.
Key Considerations
- Not all mass shooters have diagnosable mental health conditions
- Mental health issues alone do not cause someone to become violent
- Stigmatizing mental illness can discourage people from seeking help
- Improving access to mental health services may help prevent some incidents
Potential Solutions
Addressing the intersection of mental health and mass shootings requires a multifaceted approach:
- Improving access to mental health services
- Implementing early intervention programs in schools and communities
- Enhancing crisis intervention and suicide prevention efforts
- Providing better support for individuals with a history of trauma or violent behavior
- Developing more effective risk assessment tools for mental health professionals and law enforcement
By focusing on mental health as part of a comprehensive strategy to prevent mass shootings, we can work towards creating safer communities while also supporting those struggling with mental health issues.
The Role of Media Coverage: Balancing Public Information and Responsible Reporting
Media coverage of mass shootings plays a crucial role in shaping public perception and understanding of these events. However, the way these incidents are reported can have both positive and negative consequences. Responsible reporting is essential to inform the public while minimizing potential harm.
Challenges in Mass Shooting Coverage
- The “contagion effect” – Extensive coverage may inspire copycat incidents
- Sensationalism and the focus on the perpetrator
- Balancing the public’s right to know with respect for victims and their families
- Accurate reporting in the midst of chaotic and rapidly evolving situations
Guidelines for Responsible Reporting
- Focus on victims and survivors rather than the perpetrator
- Avoid glorifying or sensationalizing the shooter or their actions
- Provide context and factual information about gun violence and prevention efforts
- Include information about mental health resources and support services
- Be cautious about speculating on motives or details before they are confirmed
By adhering to these guidelines, media outlets can play a positive role in informing the public, supporting affected communities, and contributing to broader discussions about preventing mass shootings.
As we continue to grapple with the issue of mass shootings in the United States, it’s crucial to approach the topic with nuance, compassion, and a commitment to finding effective solutions. By examining the various factors contributing to these tragic events and engaging in open, honest dialogue, we can work towards creating a safer society for all.
Indian-Origin Pediatrician Takes Hostages In US, Shoots Doctor, Self
The armed man was identified as Dr Bharat Narumanchi.
Houston:
A 43-year-old Indian-origin pediatrician diagnosed with terminal cancer shot dead a lady doctor and then killed himself after taking hostages at a medical office in Austin, capital of the US state of Texas.
The armed man was identified as Dr Bharat Narumanchi, who was recently diagnosed with terminal cancer, police said.
Police received a call on Tuesday saying a man walked into the offices of Children’s Medical Group (CMG) with a gun and was holding hostages inside the building, the CNN reported, citing Austin Police Department press release.
Initially several hostages were being held, police said, but several escaped and others were allowed to leave, except a pediatrician named Katherine Dodson.
The hostages who escaped the office told officers on the scene that the man was armed with a pistol and what appeared to be a shotgun, police said. He also had two duffel bags.
He had visited the CMG office a week prior to the shooting and applied for a volunteer position.
Other than his recent visit, police were unable to find a connection between Dr Dodson and Dr Narumanchi.
Hostage negotiators had tried to make contact with Narumanchi, but were unsuccessful.
After repeated attempts, SWAT officers entered the building where they found Dodson and Narumanchi dead from apparent gunshot wounds, the report said.
“It appeared that Dr Narumanchi shot himself after shooting Dr Dodson,” according to the police department’s news release. The incident is still under investigation.
The Travis County Medical Examiner will be conducting an autopsy to determine the official cause and manner of death.

Here’s look at mass killings in 2021
CLOSE
Ten people were killed, including a police officer, in a shooting at King Soopers in Boulder, Colorado.
USA TODAY
The shooting rampage in Boulder, Colorado, that left 10 people dead this week was the nation’s seventh mass killing this year and came six days after the last one, the shooting of eight at Georgia massage spas.
A sobering database compiled by USA TODAY, The Associated Press and Northeastern University in Boston tracks mass killings – defined as four or more dead, not including the killer. Two of the tragedies took place in Indianapolis, one apparently was not a shooting.
There were 23 mass killings in 2020, down from 45 in 2019, according to the database. James Alan Fox, the Lipman Family Professor of Criminology, Law & Public Policy at Northeastern University, said one reason for the decline might be that mass killers are often motivated by a feeling of being unfairly treated by society.
“During the pandemic, it’s hard to think they were the only one suffering,” he said.
The fact that fewer people are gathering during the pandemic is probably another factor for the decrease, he said.
Boulder and Atlanta drew global headlines in recent days. Here’s a look at the other five mass killings in 2021, which got far less attention but destroyed families and left communities in mourning.
March 13, Indiana: 4 killed
The Indianapolis man accused of killing three adults and a 7-year-old girl on March 13 told police he began shooting everyone inside a home after an argument over a stimulus check, court records show. Malik Halfacre, 25, was arrested a day after police say he shot and killed Anthony Johnson, 35; Dequan Moore, 23; Eve Moore, 7; and Tomeeka Brown, 44.
A survivor of the shooting – who family said shared a daughter with Halfacre – was shot in the back and directed police to the residence.
Feb. 2, Oklahoma: 6 killed
On Feb. 2, five children were among six people killed at a home in Muskogee, Oklahoma, authorities said. Suspect Jarron Deajon Pridgeon, 25, lived at the home and was taken into custody, Muskogee Police Officer Lynn Hamlin said.
No motive for the attack has been revealed.
Officers responded to a call at about 1:30 a.m. of a multiple shooting at the home, Hamlin said. The officers encountered a person with a gun, and one officer fired one shot that missed the armed person as he ran from the scene, police said.
Pridgeon was later arrested after a short foot pursuit. Hamlin said Pridgeon lived in the home and was not cooperating with investigators. He was jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing June 4.
More: Columbine, Aurora and now Boulder: Colorado has the sixth-highest rate of public mass killings
Jan. 24, Indiana: 6 killed
Raymond Ronald Lee Childs III was charged with six counts of murder and related offenses in the Jan. 24 shootings of his family in Indianapolis. The victims were his parents, Kezzie and Raymond Childs, both 42, Elijah Childs,18, Rita Childs, 13 – both siblings of the suspect – as well as Kiara Hawkins, 19, and her unborn child. Authorities said Elijah Childs and Hawkins were in a relationship.
At just 17, the suspect cannot face the death penalty but could face life in prison if found guilty. A 15-year-old brother was shot and left for dead but became the sole survivor of the massacre. He said his father’s last words to the son accused of killing him were “I love you.”
Jan. 24, New Mexico: 4 killed
The manhunt for a person of interest in a quadruple homicide in New Mexico ended March 10 in Missouri with the arrest of a man also wanted in a New Jersey killing. The decomposed bodies of suspect Sean Lannon’s ex-wife and three other people were found in a vehicle in a parking garage at Albuquerque International Sunport on March 5. They were last seen alive Jan. 24.
The victims were identified as Jennifer Lannon, 39; Matthew Miller, 21; Jesten Mata, 40; and Randal Apostalon, 60. Authorities did not release a cause of death. Lannon, 47, was arrested in St. Louis on March 10.
Lannon is also accused of killing a man in East Greenwich, New Jersey. Lannon is accused of breaking into the home of Michael Dabkowski, 66, and beating him to death with a hammer, according to an affidavit.
Prosecutors said Lannon told relatives he killed the four and “11 other individuals.” Investigators are looking into the claim, but thus far Lannon has been charged only with the death in New Jersey.
Jan. 9, Illinois: 5 killed
A man killed five people and wounded at least two others in a series of shootings Jan. 9 that started on Chicago’s South Side and ended with the suspect’s death in a shootout with police.
The victims included Damia Smith, 15, Aisha Nevvell, 46, Anthony Faulkner, 20, Yiran Fan, 30, and Marta Torres, 61. Suspect Jason Nightengale, 32, had posted dozens of videos online in the days leading up to the shootings, flashing guns and ranting about Satan. Chicago police Superintendent David Brown said officers had scrambled to track Nightengale down as the tragedy dragged out over four tense hours.
“When you hear this whole story, it seems that you have a crystal ball of what he’s doing next, and we all know we don’t have a crystal ball,” Brown said. “We are responding to the scene as these crimes are happening, getting information, and again, he’s going to the next while we are trying to keep up with what’s happened previously.”

First Atlanta, Then Boulder: Two Mass Shootings in a Week
The deadly shooting in Boulder, Colo. on Monday, where 10 people were killed, including a police officer, was the second mass shooting in the United States in less than a week.
On Tuesday, a gunman shot and killed eight people — six of them women of Asian descent — at three spas in the Atlanta-area of Georgia.
Until that shooting in Atlanta, it had been a year since there had been a large-scale shooting in a public place. In 2018, the year that a gunman killed 17 people and injured 17 others at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., there were 10 mass shootings where four or more people were killed in a public setting.
The following year, when a gunman targeting Latinos in El Paso, Texas, killed 22 people, there were nine.
“Those were the worst years on record,” said Jillian Peterson, an associate professor of criminal justice at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minn., and a co-founder of the Violence Project, a research center that studies gun violence.
But before the shootings in Atlanta last week, there had been no such killings since March 2020, according to the Violence Project.
Other types of gun violence did increase significantly in 2020, according to Gun Violence Archive. There were more than 600 shootings in which four or more people were shot by one person compared with 417 in 2019. Many of those shootings involved gang violence, fights and domestic incidents, where the perpetrator knew the victims, Professor Peterson said.
The early research suggests that widespread unemployment, financial stress, a rise in drug and alcohol addiction, and a lack of access to community resources caused by the pandemic contributed to the increase in shootings in 2020.
The police did not say what may have motivated the gunman in Colorado, who is in custody.
In Atlanta, the shootings touched off calls to stop hate crimes against Asian-Americans, which have been rising during the pandemic. Some have blamed that rise on words used by former President Donald J. Trump, who has repeatedly called the coronavirus, which was first identified in Wuhan, China, “the Chinese virus.” The police have not ruled out bias as a motivating factor in the shooting even as the suspect denied such racial animus, officials said.
Why Does the U.S. Have So Many Mass Shootings? Research Is Clear: Guns.
When the world looks at the United States, it sees a land of exceptions: a time-tested if noisy democracy, a crusader in foreign policy, an exporter of beloved music and film.
But there is one quirk that consistently puzzles America’s fans and critics alike. Why, they ask, does it experience so many mass shootings?
Perhaps, some speculate, it is because American society is unusually violent. Or its racial divisions have frayed the bonds of society. Or its citizens lack proper mental care under a health care system that draws frequent derision abroad.
These explanations share one thing in common: Though seemingly sensible, all have been debunked by research on shootings elsewhere in the world. Instead, an ever-growing body of research consistently reaches the same conclusion.
The only variable that can explain the high rate of mass shootings in America is its astronomical number of guns.
A Look at the Numbers
The top-line numbers suggest a correlation that, on further investigation, grows only clearer.
Americans make up about 4.4 percent of the global population but own 42 percent of the world’s guns. From 1966 to 2012, 31 percent of the gunmen in mass shootings worldwide were American, according to a 2015 study by Adam Lankford, a professor at the University of Alabama.
Adjusted for population, only Yemen has a higher rate of mass shootings among countries with more than 10 million people — a distinction Mr. Lankford urged to avoid outliers. Yemen has the world’s second-highest rate of gun ownership after the United States.
Worldwide, Mr. Lankford found, a country’s rate of gun ownership correlated with the odds it would experience a mass shooting. This relationship held even when he excluded the United States, indicating that it could not be explained by some other factor particular to his home country. And it held when he controlled for homicide rates, suggesting that mass shootings were better explained by a society’s access to guns than by its baseline level of violence.
Factors That Don’t Correlate
If mental health made the difference, then data would show that Americans have more mental health problems than do people in other countries with fewer mass shootings. But the mental health care spending rate in the United States, the number of mental health professionals per capita and the rate of severe mental disorders are all in line with those of other wealthy countries.
A 2015 study estimated that only 4 percent of American gun deaths could be attributed to mental health issues. And Mr. Lankford, in an email, said countries with high suicide rates tended to have low rates of mass shootings — the opposite of what you would expect if mental health problems correlated with mass shootings.
Whether a population plays more or fewer video games also appears to have no impact. Americans are no more likely to play video games than people in any other developed country.
Racial diversity or other factors associated with social cohesion also show little correlation with gun deaths. Among European countries, there is little association between immigration or other diversity metrics and the rates of gun murders or mass shootings.
A Violent Country
America’s gun homicide rate was 33 per million people in 2009, far exceeding the average among developed countries. In Canada and Britain, it was 5 per million and 0.7 per million, respectively, which also corresponds with differences in gun ownership.
Americans sometimes see this as an expression of deeper problems with crime, a notion ingrained, in part, by a series of films portraying urban gang violence in the early 1990s. But the United States is not actually more prone to crime than other developed countries, according to a landmark 1999 study by Franklin E. Zimring and Gordon Hawkins of the University of California, Berkeley.
Rather, they found, in data that has since been repeatedly confirmed, that American crime is simply more lethal. A New Yorker is just as likely to be robbed as a Londoner, for instance, but the New Yorker is 54 times more likely to be killed in the process.
They concluded that the discrepancy, like so many other anomalies of American violence, came down to guns.
More gun ownership corresponds with more gun murders across virtually every axis: among developed countries, among American states, among American towns and cities and when controlling for crime rates. And gun control legislation tends to reduce gun murders, according to a recent analysis of 130 studies from 10 countries.
This suggests that the guns themselves cause the violence.
Comparisons in Other Societies
Skeptics of gun control sometimes point to a 2016 study. From 2000 and 2014, it found, the United States death rate by mass shooting was 1.5 per one million people. The rate was 1.7 in Switzerland and 3.4 in Finland, suggesting American mass shootings were not actually so common.
But the same study found that the United States had 133 mass shootings. Finland had only two, which killed 18 people, and Switzerland had one, which killed 14. In short, isolated incidents. So while mass shootings can happen anywhere, they are only a matter of routine in the United States.
What to Know About Gun Laws and Shootings in the U.S.
As with any crime, the underlying risk is impossible to fully erase. Any individual can snap or become entranced by a violent ideology. What is different is the likelihood that this will lead to mass murder.
In China, about a dozen seemingly random attacks on schoolchildren killed 25 people between 2010 and 2012. Most used knives; none used a gun.
By contrast, in this same window, the United States experienced five of its deadliest mass shootings, which killed 78 people. Scaled by population, the American attacks were 12 times as deadly.
Beyond the Statistics
In 2013, American gun-related deaths included 21,175 suicides, 11,208 homicides and 505 deaths caused by an accidental discharge. That same year in Japan, a country with one-third America’s population, guns were involved in only 13 deaths.
This means an American is about 300 times more likely to die by gun homicide or accident than a Japanese person. America’s gun ownership rate is 150 times as high as Japan’s. That gap between 150 and 300 shows that gun ownership statistics alone do not explain what makes America different.
The United States also has some of the weakest controls over who may buy a gun and what sorts of guns may be owned.
Switzerland has the second-highest gun ownership rate of any developed country, about half that of the United States. Its gun homicide rate in 2004 was 7.7 per million people — unusually high, in keeping with the relationship between gun ownership and murders, but still a fraction of the rate in the United States.
Swiss gun laws are more stringent, setting a higher bar for securing and keeping a license, for selling guns and for the types of guns that can be owned. Such laws reflect more than just tighter restrictions. They imply a different way of thinking about guns, as something that citizens must affirmatively earn the right to own.
The Difference Is Culture
The United States is one of only three countries, along with Mexico and Guatemala, that begin with the opposite assumption: that people have an inherent right to own guns.
The main reason American regulation of gun ownership is so weak may be the fact that the trade-offs are simply given a different weight in the United States than they are anywhere else.
After Britain had a mass shooting in 1987, the country instituted strict gun control laws. So did Australia after a 1996 shooting. But the United States has repeatedly faced the same calculus and determined that relatively unregulated gun ownership is worth the cost to society.
That choice, more than any statistic or regulation, is what most sets the United States apart.
“In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate,” Dan Hodges, a British journalist, wrote in a post on Twitter two years ago, referring to the 2012 attack that killed 20 young students at an elementary school in Connecticut. “Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over. ”

Motive still unclear in Colorado mass shooting as suspect faces murder charges
BOULDER, Colo. (Reuters) – Police on Tuesday publicly identified the suspect accused of killing 10 people – including a policeman – in a hail of bullets at a Colorado supermarket, marking the second deadly U.S. mass shooting in a week and adding to the state’s tragic history of lethal gun violence.
The suspect, Ahmad Al Aliwi Alissa, 21, of the Denver suburb of Arvada, stormed a King Soopers outlet in Boulder armed with an AR-style semi-automatic rifle and a handgun and wearing a tactical vest, all of which were recovered after Monday’s shooting, according to an arrest affidavit filed by police.
The affidavit also said law enforcement databases show Alissa purchased a Ruger AR-556 pistol, a weapon that resembles a semi-automatic rifle, on March 16, six days before the shooting.
His sister-in-law told police on Monday evening that Alissa had been “playing with” a firearm she described as resembling a “machine gun” two days before the attack, upsetting family members, the affidavit said.
Alissa was released from a hospital, where he was treated for a leg wound suffered in an exchange of gunfire with responding police, and transported to county jail on Tuesday afternoon to await an initial court appearance.
He faces 10 counts of first-degree murder and an attempted-murder charge, according to the affidavit.
Authorities did not offer any details on what might have motivated him to open fire at the store, located in the Table Mesa section of Boulder near the University of Colorado’s flagship campus and about 28 miles (45 km) northwest of Denver.
“It would be premature for us to draw any conclusions at this time,” Michael Schneider, the agent in charge of the FBI’s field office in Denver, said at a news briefing.

VETERAN OFFICER AMONG DEAD
The 10 victims ranged in age from 20 to 65 and include Eric Talley, an 11-year veteran of the Boulder police force who was among the first officers on the scene. Talley, 51, was the father of seven children and had recently been looking for a less dangerous job, according to a statement released by his father.
Police identified the nine other victims as Denny Stong, 20; Neven Stanisic, 23; Rikki Olds, 25; Tralona Bartkowiak, 49; Suzanne Fountain, 59; Teri Leiker, 51; Kevin Mahoney, 61; Lynn Murray, 62; and Jody Waters, 65. Stong, Olds and Leiker worked at the store.
Makeshift memorials of flowers, votive candles and condolence messages sprang up on Tuesday outside the supermarket and police headquarters.
Monday’s attack, which began around 2:40 p.m., sent terrified shoppers and employees fleeing as gunfire sounded.
Ryan Borowski, 37, had picked out a 12-pack of soda and a bag of chips when he heard shots ring out, sending him scurrying for the store’s back exit.
“It was pretty terrifying,” he said. “Fastest fire drill I’ve ever been in.”
Witnesses told police the assailant killed a man in his vehicle then gunned down a man in the parking lot. The shooter stood over him, firing multiple times, before entering the store to continue the rampage.
When apprehended, Alissa did not answer questions but asked to speak with his mother, according to the affidavit.
Colorado has been the site of some of the most shocking episodes of gun violence in U.S. history, including the 2012 mass shooting at a movie theater in Aurora and the 1999 rampage at Columbine High School near Littleton.
The latest bloodshed came only six days after a gunman in the Atlanta area fatally shot eight people at three day spas before he was arrested.
The two mass shootings are likely to intensify pressure on Democratic President Joe Biden to fulfill his campaign pledge to enact tougher gun limits. But legislation to ban assault-style weapons and tighten background checks has stalled amid Republican opposition in Congress.
“I don’t need to wait another minute, let alone another hour, to take common-sense steps that will save lives in the future,” Biden said at the White House on Tuesday. “This is not and should not be a partisan issue.”
House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, the Democratic leaders in Congress, said on Tuesday that the violence underscored the need for stricter gun laws.
Biden also ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff in honor of the victims; they had just been raised at sunset on Monday after having been lowered following the Atlanta killings.
DETAILS OF SUSPECT’S LIFE EMERGING
Details about Alissa were slowly emerging. He is a naturalized U.S. citizen from Syria, according to two U.S. law enforcement officials briefed on the matter.
Ali Aliwi Alissa, the alleged shooter’s 34-year-old brother, told The Daily Beast that his sibling was antisocial and paranoid.
Alissa had at least two previous run-ins with the law, according to an Arvada Police Department spokesman, who said there were criminal reports of a third-degree assault in 2017 and of criminal mischief in 2018. Details were not immediately available, and it was unclear whether Alissa was convicted of an offense.
He graduated from Arvada West High School in May 2018, according to school district spokeswoman Cameron Bell. Records show he was on the wrestling team for two seasons, she said.
An archived Facebook page that appeared to belong to Alissa said he was interested in computer science and kick-boxing.

Second mass murder in the United States in a week
This is the second mass murder in the United States in a week. Last Tuesday, eight people were shot dead in three massage parlors in and around Atlanta, Georgia, in a short space of time. Six of them had Asian roots.Seven of the victims are women. The suspect – a white male – pointed to an obsession with sex and a desire to get rid of the “temptation” as the motive.
Fatal incidents involving the use of weapons occur in the United States on an almost daily basis. The CDC Health Department, in its latest statistics, recorded 39,740 deaths from firearms in the United States in 2018. That’s about 109 deaths a day.

Colorado authorities named all ten people killed in the attack at the King Soopers supermarket in Boulder, who was also the name of the attacker after the shootout. According to Boulder Police Chief Maris Harold, among those killed are people between the ages of 20 and 65, including police officer Eric Tolley, who first arrived at the scene.
The attacker was Ahmad Alivi Alissa, who is 21 years old. His motives are still unknown.
The shooting in Boulder occurred less than a week after attacks on three spas in Atlanta, which killed 8 people, including 6 women of Asian descent.
President Joe Biden has already pledged to “use all the resources at his disposal to keep Americans safe.”
He also called for a complete ban on the possession of assault weapons and high-capacity stores and to close the loopholes in legislation that simplify checks for gun owners, which he has long advocated.
How did the events develop?
The attacker entered the supermarket and opened fire at approximately 14:30 local time (00:30 Moscow time).
About 20 minutes later, local police tweeted that a shooter had been spotted in the supermarket area and urged residents to avoid the area.
The police also urged eyewitnesses to the shooting not to broadcast “tactical information” on their social networks.

However, one passer-by filmed what was happening and posted it on the Internet.Video footage from outside the supermarket shows bodies near the building.
“I don’t know what’s going on. Shots are heard, someone fell,” the operator describes what is happening.
Police later arrived at the scene and surrounded the supermarket. The suspect in the shooting was detained.

Shooting in Boston claimed the life of a policeman – Mir – Kommersant
In Boston (Massachusetts, USA), another high-profile emergency occurred.A young American, whose name has not yet been released, opened fire on the grounds of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. A police officer was killed during the shootout. The tragedy struck the day after the US Senate refused to tighten rules on the sale of firearms.
The incident took place on the campus of one of the most prestigious universities in the world – the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The American, who is about 20 years old, for unclear reasons, opened fire on a policeman. The law enforcement officer received multiple gunshot wounds. He was urgently taken to the hospital, but the doctors were unable to save him.
After that, the suspect left the premises of the institute. After some time, the police managed to detain him in the city of Watertown, where he arrived in a stolen car. When trying to arrest the criminal, together with his accomplice, resisted. However, the police still managed to grab one of them. The search for the second participant in the attack continues.
The incident occurred a few days after the attack during the Boston Marathon. Three people became victims of the explosions, and more than a hundred were injured. Boston police have not yet concluded whether the two incidents are related to each other.
The shooting at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology also almost coincided with the decision of US senators to block the presidential plan to tighten arms control. The reform was opposed by a majority of Republicans and a few Democrats. They explained this by the fact that the proposed measures (in particular, the introduction of mandatory checks on Americans who buy firearms on the Internet or at specialized exhibitions) are contrary to the US Constitution. The supporters of the tightening of the legislation are convinced that the senators followed the lead of the arms lobby and are responsible for the coming tragedies with the use of firearms.

In the US city of Virginia Beach, Virginia, several shootings occurred, resulting in two deaths and at least eight injuries, media reported. Police arrived at the scene of the incident on Friday night while law enforcement officers were investigating another shootout, causing the suspect to clash with a police officer, city police chief Paul Nudigate quoted CNN as saying. A police officer shot and killed him, which the chief of police described as “a shootout with police intervention.” The second person was killed in another incident, according to law enforcement agencies, he is not associated with the first. A police officer was also taken to the hospital with injuries sustained after being hit by a car. Nudigate noted that many crimes occurred in the city overnight, several people were arrested. In early March, a student at a school in the US city of Neweigo, Michigan brought an improvised explosive device to the school and accidentally detonated it in the classroom, injuring six people. The media reported on Brezhnev’s plans to transfer the Kuriles to Japan Under the General Secretary of the CPSU Central Committee Leonid Brezhnev, the USSR and Japan discussed the option of transferring the island of Shikotan and a number of adjacent islands of the Lesser Kuril ridge, the Japanese television channel NHK reported, citing documents that allegedly came into his possession from the state archive of Russia. According to the TV channel, in 1973, the USSR, as part of the conclusion of a peace treaty with Japan, allegedly considered three options for solving the problem of a peace treaty between the two countries. The document referred to by NHK is called “Problems of Soviet-Japanese Relations.” It contains 26 pages of a plan of Brezhnev’s alleged statements at the talks, depending on their course and the reaction of the Japanese side, TASS reports. The first item as the main position in it indicates the possibility of transferring Shikotan and the adjacent small islands of the Lesser Kuril ridge, which in Japan are called Habomai. At the same time, it is emphasized that the USSR proceeds from the need to conclude a peace treaty, which contributes to the solution of security issues and will assist in strengthening economic, scientific, technical and cultural cooperation. However, in this way, Moscow, as noted, makes a big concession to Tokyo, in connection with which the fact of the transfer should be fixed in the agreement and “on this the territorial issue should be considered resolved.” If the Japanese side did not agree with the first option and expressed further claims to Iturup and Kunashir, the Soviet leadership considered the possibility of granting Japanese fishermen the right to fish in several areas near the two islands for a certain fee.In addition, it was proposed that Japanese fishing vessels be allowed to enter some ports and harbors of Iturup and Kunashir, and Soviet ships were to receive the right to enter the ports of the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido. Also, according to the second point of the negotiation plan, the Japanese were to be able to visit the graves of their ancestors in the southern part of the Kuril Islands in three places. In March, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga announced his intention to promote dialogue with Russia on the peace treaties. In 2019, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov called on Japan to recognize Russia’s sovereignty over the South Kuriles. The head of the Russian Foreign Ministry recalled that the 1956 declaration clearly states that Japan must first recognize the results of World War II and Russia’s sovereignty over all its lands, including these territories. Let us remind you that since the middle of the last century, Moscow and Tokyo have been intermittently negotiating a peace agreement following the results of World War II. The main obstacle to his conclusion was the question of the ownership of the southern part of the Kuril ridge. In 1945, the entire archipelago was incorporated into the Soviet Union, but the Japanese side disputes the belonging of Iturup, Kunashira, Shikotan and the group of now uninhabited islands, which in Japan is called Habomai. The VZGLYAD newspaper described in detail Russia’s position on the issue of a peace treaty with Japan.
