Looking for an exciting way to reveal your baby’s gender. How does a shooting target filled with vibrant powder sound. Can you imagine the thrill of seeing pink or blue explode as you hit the target. Discover how Duramax 5″ Target Ball can make your gender reveal party unforgettable.
The Evolution of Gender Reveal Targets: From Powder Box to XL Targets
Gender reveal parties have become increasingly popular, with expectant parents constantly seeking innovative ways to share their exciting news. The Duramax 5″ Target Ball represents the latest evolution in gender reveal products, combining the thrill of shooting sports with the joy of discovering a baby’s gender.
This product line has expanded from the original Powder Box Target to include:
- Hanging Targets
- Skeet Targets
- XL Targets
Each iteration has been designed with care and tested extensively to ensure a memorable and safe experience for all participants. The XL Targets, in particular, offer a larger powder payload, making the reveal moment even more spectacular.
Why Choose Shooting Targets for Gender Reveal?
Shooting targets for gender reveals offer a unique and engaging experience, especially appealing to outdoor enthusiasts and those who enjoy recreational shooting. They provide an interactive element that involves guests in the reveal process, creating a shared moment of anticipation and excitement.
Versatility in Design: Skeet, Hanging, and XL Targets
The Duramax 5″ Target Ball comes in various formats to suit different preferences and settings:
- Skeet Targets: Ideal for throwing or setting up on skeet stands
- Hanging Targets: Perfect for suspending from trees or posts
- XL Targets: Designed for easy placement and maximum impact
This variety allows users to customize their reveal experience based on their location, skills, and desired level of difficulty. For those new to shooting, the hanging targets offer a stationary option, while experienced shooters might prefer the challenge of skeet targets.
How do you set up XL Targets?
Setting up XL Targets is straightforward. The manufacturer recommends using a $4 t-post from Home Depot for secure placement. This simple setup ensures stability while allowing for easy target practice and a dramatic reveal moment.
Safety First: Non-Toxic and Environmentally Friendly Powder
When it comes to celebratory products, safety is paramount. The Duramax 5″ Target Ball addresses these concerns by using only the highest quality materials:
- Non-toxic powder
- Non-hazardous composition
- 100% safe for use
- Approved for use in foods
This commitment to safety ensures that participants can enjoy the reveal without worrying about harmful effects on themselves or the environment. The powder is also designed to wash away easily with water, minimizing any lasting impact on the shooting area.
Is the powder safe for outdoor use?
Yes, the powder used in Duramax 5″ Target Balls is safe for outdoor use. Its non-toxic nature and water-soluble properties make it environmentally friendly. After the reveal, any residual powder can be easily cleaned up or will naturally dissipate with rain and wind.
Customization Options: From Color Choices to Secret Reveals
Personalization is key in making each gender reveal unique. The Duramax 5″ Target Ball offers several customization options:
- Multiple color choices: Pink, Blue, Green, Purple, Yellow, Orange
- Powder-only or Powder and Confetti filling
- “Secret” option for surprise reveals
- Practice targets filled with orange powder
The “Secret” option allows parents to keep the gender a surprise even from themselves. By selecting this option and providing instructions, the company will prepare the appropriate target based on confidential information from healthcare providers.
How does the “Secret” option work?
When choosing the “Secret” option, customers can either provide gender information in a note to the seller or have their healthcare provider email the results directly to the company. The order is then prepared discreetly, with no external color indicators, ensuring a genuine surprise for everyone involved.
Practical Considerations: Recommended Equipment and Usage
To ensure the best experience and optimal results, the manufacturer provides specific recommendations for using the Duramax 5″ Target Ball:
- Use a shotgun with buckshot for XL Targets
- Birdshot is suitable for Hanging and Clay Skeet Targets at close range
- Not recommended for use with mechanical skeet throwers or rifles
These guidelines help users choose the right equipment and approach, maximizing the chances of a successful and visually striking reveal.
Why are rifles not recommended for use with these targets?
Rifles are not recommended due to their higher velocity and more focused impact. The targets are designed to rupture and disperse powder effectively when hit with shotgun pellets, which spread out and transfer energy more evenly across the target surface. Rifle bullets might pass through the target without causing the desired powder dispersion effect.
Enhancing the Reveal: Complementary Ideas and Products
While the Duramax 5″ Target Ball is a standout product for gender reveals, many customers are finding creative ways to amplify the experience:
- Using cannons in conjunction with target shooting
- Incorporating practice targets for perfect timing and photographs
- Sharing reveals on social media platforms like Instagram and Facebook
These additional elements can turn a simple reveal into a multi-faceted celebration, creating lasting memories for all involved.
How can practice targets improve the reveal experience?
Practice targets, filled with orange powder, allow participants to familiarize themselves with the shooting process and target behavior. This rehearsal ensures better accuracy during the actual reveal, increasing the chances of a picture-perfect moment and reducing the risk of mishaps.
Customer Support and Satisfaction: A Priority for Success
The success of the Duramax 5″ Target Ball isn’t just in its design, but also in the company’s commitment to customer satisfaction. They offer:
- Extensive customer support (8am-8pm, 7 days a week)
- Guidance for first-time users

This level of support ensures that customers feel confident in their purchase and have the resources they need for a successful reveal.

Types of Shooting Targets
Shooting bottles and cans off backyard fence posts is cheap, easy, and fun. However, sometimes your shooting practice requires something more specialized or challenging.
If you want something different to take your target shooting experience to the next level, there are plenty of options out there designed to do just that. Here is a quick run-down of the different types of targets available to the modern shooter.
Paper Targets
Paper targets are the simplest and cheapest target options out there. There are also a ton of different styles, all designed to meet specific shooting needs. You can choose from styles with grids to help you zero in long range rifles or silhouettes to hone your skills with a self-defense handgun.
Bullseye targets are the most iconic. This style of paper target features concentric circles, with the center as the intended aiming point.
Paper targets are very economically priced. However, they aren’t reusable, so you’ll need to replace your paper targets each time you hit the gun range. They are recyclable, however, which can be a selling point for shooters who care about the environment.
Steel Targets
Steel targets are used in several different shooting sports, including cowboy action, IPSC practical shooting, Olympic biathlon, 3 Gun, and metallic silhouette shooting. They are also a popular choice for tactical training and recreational plinking.
Most metal targets are made of hardened (martensitic) steel. When the shooter makes a successful hit, the target gives acoustic feedback in the form of a tell-tale “ping”. Bullets can also leave a mark in the target’s surface, providing visual confirmation of a hit. Reactive metal targets may spin when hit, giving further visual confirmation of shooter accuracy.
Steel targets last much longer than paper targets. They are sturdy, weatherproof, and don’t get blown around on windy days, all qualities that make them perfect for outdoor shooting.
There is a small risk of ricochet when using steel targets, so using the right ammo, keeping a proper shooting distance, and wearing the right safety gear is extra important.
Self-Sealing Targets
Made from high-tech polymer, the self-sealing target is a relative newcomer to the shooting scene. They work like steel, only without the risk of ricochet. While many react like a standard steel target (minus the “ping), the bullets pass right through the target. The hole actually closes back up after the bullet passes through. Unlike steel, polymer targets never have to be repainted, and they should (at least theoretically) last a lifetime.
Clay Targets
Clay targets (sometimes called clay pigeons) are commonly used in shotgun sports like skeet, trap, and sporting clays. In these sports, the clay targets are thrown either by hand or by a machine called a trap. Sometimes clay targets are used as inserts for other stationary or moving targets. They also make regular appearances on 3 Gun courses, where shooters may need to use their rifle or pistol to score a hit.
Clays are usually fluorescent orange (although they may also be black, white, or yellow) and shaped like a small, concave plate. Made from a mixture of pitch and powdered limestone, clay targets easily break apart when hit, even if it’s only by a few shotgun pellets. They also typically smash when they hit the ground, so these are one-time-use targets.
Best Shooting Targets on the Market Review
1 Splatterburst Stick & Splatter Reactive Shooting Targets
These reactive sticker targets from Splatterburst work well for both rifle and pistol shooting. Made for high visibility, the targets make a bright fluorescent yellow “splatter” on impact.
The yellow hit makes a serious contrast with the black of the target, so you can easily see your hits from the firing line. These high visibility hits can save precious time, saving you the energy spent walking downrange to check your accuracy.
You can use Stick & Splatter targets at indoor or outdoor ranges. They have a convenient peel-and-stick design with a highly adhesive backing that sticks to virtually any surface (even outside in a hot, humid Southern summer).
Each target also comes with several small cover-up patches. Just place these small black and red stickers over your previous hits, and it’s like you have a brand-new target.
These are some of the best paper targets we’ve tried. You can choose from several sizes (2”, 4”, 8”, or 12”). They are proudly made in America and even come with a 100 percent satisfaction guarantee.
2 Champion 47387 Sight-in Targets
Designed for precision shooting, these high-quality paper sight-in targets from Champion Traps and Targets are the perfect way to dial in accuracy or zero in a new optic.
These targets feature one large diamond in the center over a grid of one-inch squares. Each target also has four solid red bars that run along the north to south and east to west axes. The targets measure sixteen inches square and have four additional small diamonds in each corner, so you can easily compare the ballistics of different loads on the same sheet.
The grid background makes it easy to measure MOA so you can make precise sighting adjustments. You can also use these targets to practice consistent sight picture, sight alignment, and trigger pull. A highly affordable way to practice, these targets come in packs of 100.
3 Champion 40735 Green Police Silhouette Targets
Perfect for practicing defensive shooting, these targets from Champion feature the classic green silhouettes often used for law enforcement training exercises. The entire target measures 24” x 45” and the silhouette is life-size, allowing for realistic self-defense practice and shot placement. The green color helps you see where your shots land and works especially well when used at indoor shooting ranges.
The middle of the silhouette features a large, round scoring table, so you can keep track of both the accuracy and effectiveness of your shots. These targets are made from relatively thin paper, and while they will easily handle multiple rounds, they probably won’t survive multiple trips to the range. Each package includes ten targets.
4 MarksmanSKLZ Diagnostic and Training Shooting Targets
If you want to seriously improve your pistol shooting skills, MarksmanSKLZ training targets are the perfect tool for the job. Not only will these targets help diagnose problems in shooting form and technique, they will also help you fix those deficiencies.
MarksmanSKLZ training targets feature fluorescent red ink for increased visibility. The color provides high contrast, so your weapon sights don’t disappear on a dark target. The design helps improve sight alignment, making it especially useful for new shooters.
The targets provide instant feedback on errors in technique, including trigger jerking, recoil anticipation, and grip. You also get a free illustrated guide that will walk you through proper shooting fundamentals. It also includes useful drills to help you improve your shooting skills.
Targets are available for both right- and left-handed shooters, and they come with a 60-day money back guarantee. If these targets don’t make your target practice more productive, the company will refund your money, no questions asked.
5 Caldwell 902365 Handgun Resetting Targets
These heavy-duty steel targets from Caldwell make for the perfect interactive shooting experience. The hanging 2.5-inch shooting areas automatically reorient after each hit.
Easily portable and conveniently compact, Caldwell Handgun Resetting Targets can be set up in a matter of seconds. For extra stability, the target legs insert into the ground and feature an extra brace to ensure the target stays put during training.
Although built to last, Caldwell Handgun Resetting Targets are not intended for Magnum loads. However, they do handle cartridges up to .45 ACP without breaking a sweat.
6 AR500 Target Solutions Combo Pack
These targets from AR500 Target Solutions are some of the best quality steel targets on the market today. The company has upgraded their materials and now uses high-quality AR550 steel, which is actually stronger than traditional AR500, helping these targets last through thousands of rounds.
The combo pack includes one 12” x20” IDPA/ IPSC silhouette target, one 10″ round target, and one 8″ round target. These targets are proudly made in the USA. The only downside is you’ll have to purchase your chains, mounts, and stands separately.
7 Highwild AR500 Steel Hostage Target
This challenging hostage target from Highwild is made from high-quality AR500 steel. Built to withstand weather, the AR500 steel also handles impact from high caliber rifle bullets, making it perfect for long-range rifle practice.
The Hostage Target features a 12″ x 20″ silhouette target with a 4-inch top swivel paddle and a separate 6-inch center swivel paddle. The paddles actively swing from side to side. However, they aren’t electronic, but instead use gravity to power the movement.
A different color (orange or yellow) shows depending on the direction of movement. You can use the target for shooting drills that simulate a hostage situation. The shooter must hit only the orange or yellow moving target while avoiding the white center silhouette.
8 Do-All Outdoors Dancing Ball Ground Bouncer
Improve your shooting skills with this Dancing Ball reactive target from Do-All Outdoors. Every time you make a shot, the target bounces, rolls, flies, or wobbles. Since no two shots are ever the same, your shooting practice is constantly evolving, requiring you to locate the target and readjust your aim with every shot.
The Dancing Ball is a self-healing target made from high-quality polymer. Built to handle more than 1000 shots, this challenging target will provide countless hours of entertaining practice. You can safely use this target with all soft nose ammo from .22 to .50 caliber.
9 SME Self-Healing Windmill Target
This self-healing windmill target sits on top of a solid steel frame. It spins when struck, giving instant visual confirmation of a successful hit.
Ready to go right out of the box, the SME Windmill Target requires no assembly. You just stick it in the ground and you’re ready to go.
The bright green color is easy to see down range, and the angle of the paddles changes with every shot, increasing shot difficulty for a more challenging range session.
This self-healing target is made from durable polymer and can handle thousands of rounds. It’s also rated for all calibers, so it works just as well for your .22 long rifle as it does for your .45 ACP.
10 MarksmanSKLZ Resetting Shooting Bottle Targets
If you enjoy plinking bottles off fence posts, these shatterproof resetting targets are a safe alternative to glass. You get six brightly colored plastic bottles and 19 feet of cord. You can hang these targets from trees or target stands, although they also balance easily on a rail or post.
These targets work well with handguns, rifles, and shotguns, and they handle almost any caliber projectile. Made from durable, environmentally safe LDPE material, these bottle targets are not self-healing, but will still last through thousands of rounds. MarksmanSKLZ also backs these targets with a 100 percent money back guarantee.
Final Thoughts
Whether you need to improve your skills with a pistol, rifle, or shotgun, the best shooting targets can help you shoot more quickly, accurately, and effectively. There are hundreds of different targets you can choose from, and there’s nothing wrong with trying a new target to test or strengthen your skills. You can even incorporate different types of targets into the same training session to keep things fresh, fun, and challenging.

90,000 Target shooting in Tula
According to the Russian Shooting Union, target shooting is divided into three main groups:
- trench stand;
- round stand;
- double trap.
Trench stand (Ladder)
An exercise performed by shooters standing in the same line of fire, at the end of the 19th century. received the name “trench stand”, and abroad – “ladder”, from the English trap – hunting.In this exercise, targets fly out in different directions, and shooting at them requires good reaction, attention, quick decision-making.
Round stand (Skeet)
The name of the American – Davis of Androver – is associated with the emergence in the mid-1920s. a round stand or “skete” (the word has Scandinavian roots), where the targets fly along constant trajectories, and the athletes, moving in a circle from one firing point to another, fire at different angles.
Targets are served singly or two at once (doublet) from two machines located at a distance of 40 meters from each other at opposite ends of a semicircular arc, on which there are seven shooting places.Targets are launched from two places: a tower (3.1 m) and a booth (1.7 m) at a distance of 67 meters with specified trajectories and speed. The maximum target flight speed is 30 m / s.
This discipline uses a combination of serving single and double targets for a total of 25 targets in a series. Targets are launched from high and low booths with a fixed trajectory and speed. Shooting is carried out from eight shooting positions located in a semicircular arc. The hit target counts as one point, the maximum number of points is 25.The target is considered hit when at least one fragment is separated from it.
Double-trap
Simultaneous shooting at double targets (doublet).
Compact sporting is one of the types of sporting and hunting shooting, united by the general term sporting, characterized in that a series of 25 targets are fired in limited areas, or combined sites of round and trench stands, or on sites of sizes close to them. The maximum target hitting range is no more than 35 meters.This exercise is as close to real hunting as possible and is the most popular sporting discipline in many countries (for example, in France, which is considered its homeland).
On the territory of our park-hotel a large and modern clay pigeon shooting complex has been located and has been operating for a long time.
The club’s experienced instructors will teach beginners to shoot shotguns, organize small competitions for your guests and help the novice shooter have a lot of fun shooting at flying targets. In our arsenal there are guns of the most famous domestic brands: MC and MR; and for lovers of foreign weapons there is also the Italian brand Beretta.
In the “Citadel” club, Tula hunters can always practice shooting before hunting and improve their professional skills.
For shooters-athletes, the club has built 10 shooting grounds and operates more than 60 throwing machines from the world’s best manufacturers Promatic and LaPorte. This allows you to customize the most varied flights of targets of any complexity.The club regularly hosts competitions of various levels, which are attended by shooters – masters of sports from different regions of Russia.
Bullet shooting – Moving target exercise
MV-10 – firing from a small-bore rifle with a telescopic sight, distance 50 m. Slow movement speed. 20 shots. Target “Running boar”. The open space that the target passes is 10 m.
MV-11 – firing from a small-bore rifle with an optical sight, a distance of 50 m. Travel speed – slow and fast. 20 + 20 shots. Target “Running boar”. The open space that the target passes is 10 m.
MV-11a – shooting from a small-bore rifle with a telescopic sight, a distance of 50 m. The “Running boar” target. The exercise consists of 2 series of 20 shots. In each series, on each side, the movement is performed by 5 slow (2 m / s) and 5 fast (4 m / s) runs, the sequence of which is randomly mixed and unknown to the shooter (the so-called “mixed run”).The open space that the target passes is 10 m. Before each series, one slow and one fast run is performed on each side of the movement.
MV-12 – shooting from a small-bore rifle with a telescopic sight, a distance of 50 m. The “Running boar” target. The exercise is divided into 2 series: 30 shots at a target moving at a speed of 2 m / s (“slow run”) and 30 shots at a target moving at a speed of 4 m / s (“fast run”). The target is shown from behind the cover and alternately from right to left and from left to right passes an open space equal to 10 m. Before performing the first series, the shooter is given 4 trial runs at a slow speed; before the second series – 4 test runs at fast speed.
VP-10 – shooting from an air rifle with a telescopic sight, distance 10 m. Movement speed – slow. 20 shots. Target “Running boar”.
VP-11 – shooting from an air rifle with a telescopic sight, a distance of 10 m. The “Running boar” target. 40 shots, 20 creep runs and 20 fast run runs.
VP-11a – shooting from an air rifle with a telescopic sight, a distance of 10 m. The “Running boar” target. The open space that the target passes is equal to 2 m. The rest of the fulfillment conditions correspond to MV-11a.
VP-12 – shooting from an air rifle with a telescopic sight, a distance of 10 m. The “Running boar” target. The open space that the target passes is equal to 2 m. The rest of the performance conditions correspond to MV-12.
90,000 PRACTICAL SHOOTING: the art of hitting targets (Part VI)
(Continued. Beginning in the articles “PRACTICAL SHOOTING ( Part I ), ( Part II ), ( Part III ), ( Part IV ), ( Part V ) »)
Hitting static targets
The scoring zones on the IPSC cardboard targets are specially punched out so that they cannot be seen from a distance. Aiming at both classic and metric cardboard targets should be slightly above the geometric center – at the place where the center of the highest scoring zone is located A.
The shooter has only 0.5 seconds to hit the
bonus cardboard target with two shots. In this exercise there are 3 such targets,
appearing one after the other within 1.5 seconds.
World Championship, South Africa, 2005
Shot control is carried out according to the shooter’s sensations and observations during shooting. The shooter marks for himself the places of hitting the target by muscle sensations and by the location of the sighting devices at the time of the shot. On targets located at a distance of up to 20 m, bullet holes can be marked visually (depending on the shooter’s visual acuity).In competition, cardboard targets can be located at a distance of 1 to 50 m.
Targets are often encountered during exercises where part of the scoring area is covered by a no-target, “hard” or “soft” surface. At medium and long range, such targets are hit using only the first aiming option. Moreover, you need to aim at the geometric center of the open sector of the target’s scoring area.
Aiming the highest scoring area in such cases is not recommended, as in this case, the shooting time will increase and there is a risk of missing or, even worse, hitting a free target.
It is interesting to watch the performance of an experienced shooter at the competition. Sometimes you can see how an athlete, instead of two shots at a cardboard target, makes three shots in a row and, without slowing down, continues to perform the exercise. This means that the shooter felt a bad shot at the moment of shooting and immediately made another one, correcting the mistake.
On steel plates you need to aim in the center. Pepper Poppers and Classic Poppers must be hit in the center of the circle at the top of the target.
In competition, poppers are calibrated so that if they hit the circle at the top of the target with the smallest pistol (9.19), the target will fall. And if it hits below the circle, the target should not fall.
In duel shooting, when a control target is hit, the shooters shoot several times in a row, thereby accelerating the fall of the popper. Sometimes it helps to win the fight.
When hitting a steel target, the characteristic sound of metal hitting metal is heard.The presence of a hit sound does not guarantee that the target will be hit. In practical shooting, the steel target must fall to qualify for credit. Visual control of the hit is essential when hitting steel targets.
Poppers are much heavier than steel plates and therefore have a high inertness. When a bullet of a minor power factor (9.19) hits the popper, it takes some time for the target to start falling.
Steel targets in competition are always painted in the same color.After the performance of each shooter, the target is tinted. The shooter, hitting the target, can immediately notice a dark spot on its surface. If the target is black, the spot will be gray from the lead in the pool. Steel targets in practical pistol shooting competitions can be located at a distance of 8 to 50 m. The minimum distance to the target – 8 m – is dictated by safety rules.
Shooters-athletes monitor the defeat of steel targets by three factors:
1) determination of the point of impact by muscle work and the location of sighting devices at the time of the shot;
2) visual inspection of the spot at the point where the bullet hits the target;
3) sound control of the hit.
I want to note that after the shot the shooter has no time to stand and look at the target in order to determine the hit. There is no time for this. The shooter controls the hit in a split second after the shot, taking into account all three factors described above.
There are several shooting positions on medium and long rounds. Each shooting position can have multiple steel targets. After hitting targets in one shooting position, you need to quickly move to another. Waiting for all the steel targets to fall is to worsen your result.
It is necessary to draw up your “game plan” so that when you leave this shooting position, you can control the fall of steel targets without wasting time looking.
Hitting moving targets
Several moving targets can always be encountered in a competition. They can be divided into three groups:
1) targets moving along a trajectory close to a straight line;
2) swinging targets, these are the so-called swingers and bobbers;
3) one-time appearing and disappearing targets – the so-called bonus targets, which are not subject to penalties for a miss.
All moving targets must be activated by the shooter after the start signal. The most commonly used activators are poppers. In case of defeat, the popper falls and with the help of a cable or cord activates a moving target. Activation by means of doors, drawers, pedals, levers or simple ropes is also used.
Hitting targets moving in a straight trajectory
Targets moving in a straight line are the easiest to hit. When such targets are hit at a distance of up to 10 m, no lead is made.The pistol must be guided together with the target, combining the sighting devices with the point of impact. At the same time, the trigger free travel is selected. When the sights are combined, the trigger is fine-tuned and the shot is fired.
Aiming at the geometric center
of the open scoring area
of the sector target
At a distance of more than 10 m, it is necessary to make a lead, depending on the speed of the target. Lead is the movement of the aiming point relative to the hit point forward along the movement of the target.In other words, while the bullet is flying towards the target, the target reaches the point of meeting with it. A shot at a moving target with a lead is made in the same way as in the first case. Only after the sighting devices are aligned with the center of the target, the pistol moves forward in motion at a predetermined lead. When moving targets are hit, the descent must be especially carefully processed. It must be remembered that the removal of the aiming point in anticipation must be made strictly along the line of motion.
The lead is determined empirically.This is necessary so that at a competition, when you see a moving target, you can determine for yourself the amount of lead. You can participate in dozens of competitions and meet dozens of targets moving at different speeds at different distances.
For training, it is good to use a multispeed running boar set-up. The targets are fixed on the setup and launched at different speeds. Hitting targets at different distances, the shooter determines the amount of lead for himself for each case.It is better to write down the information obtained in the training diary. The amount of lead can be calculated. To do this, you need to know the speed of the target, the speed of the bullet and the distance from the shooter to the target. This dataset will make up a simple math problem with one unknown. But it is better to be able to determine the amount of lead by eye, based on your experience.
Do not be afraid of targets moving forward or backward towards the shooter. No pre-emption is required when such targets are hit. The main thing here is to correctly calculate the time and moment of the shot.
Targets moving diagonally are hit in the same way as targets moving along the front.
Hitting swinging targets
The difficulty of hitting swinging targets (swingers) depends on the speed of movement, on the distance and on the sector of the swing trajectory in which the target is visible.
The lead is made by moving the aiming point
forward
in accordance with the target movement
Consider the case when the target appears from behind the cover during the swing, reaches the dead center and goes back behind the cover. The target can appear both on the right side of the cover, and on the left. Before starting the exercise, always do a demo launch of moving targets. During the demo launch of the target, you must note for yourself where the target will be, stopping at a dead center.
During the exercise after the target has been activated, even before it appears, the sights are aligned with the marked place. The selection of the trigger freewheel begins. The shot must be fired at the moment the target is at the dead center.You need to aim at the geometric center of the target.
Generally, cardboard targets are to be hit by two shots during exercises. Experienced shooters fire two shots per target. Beginners are advised to fire one shot per target appearance. If you are not sure about the hit after the second shot, then it is better to wait for the next exit of the target and make another shot. Better to spend 1-2 seconds on an extra shot than get penalized for a miss.
The next case is when the trajectory of the target swing is open only in the central part. At this moment, the speed of the target reaches its maximum. The target, without stopping, flashes in the opening, remaining visible for less than a second. Such targets are hit with one shot for each appearance. Shooters in the open class pistol sometimes hit such targets with two shots in one pass.
To learn how to hit such targets, you need to choose according to your feelings the moment of the shot. The main rule is not to strain and not be afraid of these targets. If in doubt about a hit, then fire a second shot.When doing the exercise, do not worry about wasting time or interrupting the procedure. Shoot without analyzing. Follow your game plan. Remember: all arrows are in the same conditions.
Defeat of single-appearing and disappearing targets
You should not spend a lot of time on the practice of defeating single-appearing and disappearing targets. These targets are not often seen on exercises. The effectiveness of their defeat depends in general on the general level of your shooting skill. In the event of a miss on such a target, no penalties are charged, which is why it is called a bonus target. The main thing to be able to do is to fire two aimed shots in a short period of time when the target appears.
In big competitions you will likely encounter all of the moving targets described above. Often, designers, in order to complicate the shooting task, attach free-kick targets to moving targets.
Double Shot
When practicing practical pistol shooting, cardboard targets are most often struck with two shots.When using the Comstock scoring system, if a cardboard target is hit by three or more shots, the best two hits count.
Where did the requirement to hit the target with two shots come from? Police practice shows that to stop an aggressor drunk with alcohol or drugs, one hit from a pistol is not enough, even if it is a 45-caliber pistol. In most cases, only two or more hits stop the attacker. Therefore, practical shooting has inherited from live shooting the rule that the target must be hit by at least two shots. But this is not always a prerequisite. In competitions, you can find exercises where it is enough to hit the target with only one shot. One of the principles of practical shooting is variety.
Popper Aiming
Some novice shooters, having fired two quick shots at a target with the hope that there will be at least one hit, are often disappointed not to find one.
If you watch an experienced shooter quickly hit targets with double shots, it may seem that he does so without aiming.This is a misleading impression. Carefully watching the video of the performance, you can see that at a short distance the shooter very quickly makes double shots, which practically merge into one. At an average distance (8-15 m), the “pair” will be more distinct. And at a long distance (20-30 m) it will be two separate shots. Although an inexperienced observer will not notice the difference. If you look at the targets, almost all of them will have two neat holes, usually located close to each other. Sometimes the distance between the holes is 1–2 cm. We jokingly call such “pairs” “mouse eyes”, and there are also “cockroaches”. But there is no need to strive for high accuracy at the expense of the rate of fire. It is enough to learn to confidently hit the A (“Alpha”) zone twice on the target.
To achieve a stable result and always confidently hit the target twice, you need to understand the following: a double shot is two aimed shots. This means that the shooter must always be able to see the sights when firing.If this is not taken as the basis of preparation, the shooter’s result will be unstable. The exceptions are cases when an open target is located closer than 7 m. At short distances, the third aiming option is used. The shooter makes the first shot with the control of the front sight, and the second follows him without aiming. This method of firing a double shot can be used after some experience. The Americans call this method of hitting targets “Hammers” (it can be translated as “swotting”).
It is necessary to start training a double shot with two separate aimed shots. You need to practice at short, medium, and long distances.
Novice shooters may think that the more you hold the pistol grip in your hand, the more successful your shooting will be. If that were the case, then Schwarzenegger would be the world champion in practical shooting. Do not grip the pistol grip with all your strength. This usually leads to stiffness of the shooter and to the “bending” of the pistol down at the moment of the shot.The gun must be held naturally with a strong hand, without tension, such as a hammer when driving in a nail. The wrist of the weak hand should be tightly wrapped around the strong one. The shoulders should not be tense. The pistol is simply held in the eye-to-target line. After firing the pistol, under the influence of the “muscle corset”, will return to its previous position by itself, and it will be possible to make a second shot. Do not create tension between the two hands – when holding the pistol, the hands should not oppose each other.
Standard exercises such as Bill-Drill (6 shots per target) can be used to practice double-shot. It is important to train the double shot in motion.
When practicing, it is useful to note the time between two shots. The rate of fire is influenced by the shooter’s experience and, to a lesser extent, the quality of the weapon. Shooters, protruding at the level of the masters, shoot an average of 0.15–0.19 s between two shots. The physical limit is outlined somewhere on the verge of 0.08–0.10 s.
Do not concentrate too much on the double shot.It’s just two shots at the target. The shooter faces many other shooting tasks. They are just as important as a spectacular pair of shots.
Methods of fast and accurate hitting of targets
TRAINING EXERCISE No. 21. “HIT DETERMINATION”.
Performed with cartridges and timer. The exercise is designed to practice the ability to determine, immediately after the shot, where the bullet hit on the target. Or in other words, develop a sense of the shot.The exercise is suitable for both beginner and experienced shooters. You can do it with a partner, you can train alone. The target is located at a distance of 25 m from the shooter. The exercise requires a table and a telescope.
START. Sound signal.
STARTING POSITION. The shooter stands facing the target. The loaded pistol is held with both hands at the level of the solar plexus, with the barrel towards the target, elbows touching the sides of the body. The index finger is outside the trigger guard, parallel to the barrel.
PERFORMANCE ORDER. At the sound signal, the shooter aims the weapon at the target and fires a shot. Without looking at the target, the shooter names the place where, in his opinion, the bullet hit. At first, this may be an approximate definition: “Below the center”, “Right edge of the target”, etc.? Then he looks through the telescope and compares the real hit with his assumptions. With the acquisition of experience, the athlete should indicate more accurate coordinates, for example: “D at 5 o’clock”, “The upper part of zone A”.
TRAINING EXERCISE № 25. LOSS OF THE SWINGING TARGET.
Performed with cartridges and timer. The timer is only needed to give a start signal.
The exercise is intended to train the swinging target hitting technique. Suitable for both beginners and experienced shooters.
Place the rocking target behind the cover. So that when swinging, it appears completely on only one side. A popper is installed at a distance of 3–5 m along the front to activate the target.The popper should be slightly ahead of the target. This is done so that the debris of the bullet that crashed against the surface of the popper does not hit the target and the activating cord. If the target will appear from behind the shelter on the left, then it is more convenient to install the popper on the left. The distance to the popper is 8 m. Distance to the swinging target 9 m.
STARTING POSITION. The shooter stands relaxed, facing the target. Hands are down. Loaded pistol in a holster. The cartridge is secured in the chamber.
The athlete hits two rocking targets,
which appear simultaneously.
Philippines Open Championship, Manila, 2004
PERFORMANCE ORDER. At the beep, the shooter draws out his pistol and hits the popper. Immediately directs the pistol to the place where the swinging target should appear, and makes the choice of the trigger free stroke. When a target appears, it fires a shot. Waits for the next appearance, choosing the free travel of the trigger. The next time the target appears, another shot. Thus, the target is hit for each appearance until the magazine runs out of cartridges.After that, the shooter removes the magazine, unloads the weapon and places it in the holster. Then he takes the adhesive tape and goes to the target. It is necessary to count the number of holes on the paper target, compare their number with the number of cartridges in the store. Determine if there are any misses considering popper shots. Analyze the placement of holes on the target with your sensations of the shot. Have you felt the slips and breaks? Seal the holes on the target. Activate the target and continue training.
Once you are confident and correct in performing this exercise, complicate it.Hit the target with two shots each time it appears. Change the direction of the target’s appearance. Move the popper to the right and position the swinger so that the target appears on the right. Increase the distance to the targets.
STANDARD EXERCISE # 27. BILL DRILL.
Performed with cartridges and timer. This is a very famous exercise for training fly control when shooting at high speed. Useful for training fast double shots. A cardboard target or gong with dimensions 60×40 cm is used.The cardboard target is set at a distance of 7 m. A gong at a distance of 8 m. For effective training, it is better to use a gong. A cardboard target is used for offset. Remember to use safety glasses and ear protection!
STARTING POSITION. The shooter stands relaxed, facing the gong. Hands are lowered or raised up. Loaded pistol in a holster. The cartridge is secured in the chamber.
PERFORMANCE ORDER. At the sound signal, the shooter draws out the pistol and fires six shots at the target.Lock the gun and place it in the holster. Look at the timer for the total time, the time of the first shot and the time between shots (“split”). Hits will be visible on the gong. Each shot will sound like a sound. Analyze your hits, compare them with your feelings while shooting. If there are breaks or misses, match them to your experience while firing the shots. Repeat the exercise. After several rounds of shots, unload the weapon and place it in its holster.Color the gong.
Only hits in zone “A” of the target are counted. You need to hit the target as quickly as you are able to control the sights. Aiming should be done according to the second option. After each shot, you must align the sights on the target and only then fire the next shot. Do not strain while holding the pistol. Do not be confused by the high toss of the barrel during recoil. If you hold the pistol correctly, without undue stress, then the toss sights will return to the same place.A good time for this exercise is within 2 seconds.
The exercise must be trained at distances of 3 m, 10 m, 15 m, 20 m, 25 m.
For the test, the exercise is performed on a cardboard target. The results of the test series are entered in the table.
TRAINING EXERCISE No. 28. TRAINING CHANGE OF SPEEDS ON TWO TARGETS.
Performed with cartridges and timer. The exercise is intended to train the technique of changing the firing rates when transferring from a near target to a distant one.It is necessary to place a cardboard target at a distance of 3-5 m from the shooter and a gong – a steel plate with a diameter of 30 cm – at 25 m.
START POSITION. The shooter stands relaxed, facing the targets. Hands are down. Loaded pistol in a holster. The cartridge is secured in the chamber.
In this exercise, the athlete instantly strikes 90,023 close targets, two shots each, and then over
shoots accurately at distant targets.
One of them is swinging.
World Championship, Ecuador, 2005
PERFORMANCE ORDER. At the sound signal, the shooter draws out his pistol and hits the gong with one shot, then hits the cardboard target with two shots. Without stopping, he hits the gong again, then comes back and hits the cardboard target. The targets are hit in turn until the magazine runs out of cartridges. After the end of the shooting, the pistol is unloaded and placed in a holster. The timer shows the transfer time between the far and near target and is compared with the transfer time between the near and far target.In the first case, the transfer time should be much shorter. When the gong is hit, the third aiming option is used. When a cardboard target is hit – the first or second aiming option.
If the shooter misses the gong, repeat the shot and hit the target. Only then hit the cardboard target. When increasing the rate of fire, do not allow yourself to be careless. Shoot while controlling the front sight. Hit the cardboard target only in the “A” area.
Typical errors and methods of their elimination
The worst enemy of shooting at swinging targets is the “bending” of the pistol down at the moment of the shot.When hitting a swinger, the shooter is limited in time, strains, trying to shoot faster. He has a reaction of the shooter’s body to the expected shot.
Problem. When firing at high speed, pressing the trigger again quickly will not fire.
Error. This error is typical for high-speed shooting at short distances – trigger clamping. This happens when the shooter’s hands are too tense, the shooter, in a state of strong excitement, tries to make the second very quickly after the first shot at the target.The forefinger of the athlete, constrained by tension, does not make a return movement after pulling the trigger and immediately makes a second push. Naturally, the shot does not occur, because the trigger is in the rearmost position. When shooting on the run at closely spaced targets, the running shooter, instead of two shots, makes one and, by inertia, runs forward past the target. The athlete has to go back and hit the target again. Sometimes an inexperienced shooter, by inertia, having run through the target and not having made the second shot, turns back with the pistol to correct the mistake and “breaks” the safety angle.For this he will be immediately disqualified from the competition.
You can get rid of this mistake by relieving muscle tension before starting and by controlling the condition of the muscles during the exercise. In training, you should try to perform exercise 1 at a distance of 3-5 m, making not one, but two and three shots for each aiming of the pistol. The exercise should be done at a high pace, keeping the focus on muscle relaxation. When muscle relaxation is controlled, there will come a point where the hits from each series of shots on the target are close together. It is necessary to remember this state and try to reproduce it in all trainings and competitions. When shooting at high speed with the right relaxation, speed increases, accuracy increases, and ease and confidence emerge.

Silhouette shooting at targets
Sport – silhouette shooting involves shooting at targets that look like real animals or people.
This activity originated in Mexico as entertainment for hunters. Animal targets were made from metallic materials. Initially, powerful rifles were used for shooting, but later hunters began to use other weapons and pneumatics as well.
Rules for shooting silhouette
According to the classical rules of the competition, groups of targets are used: pig, chicken, ram and turkey. When firing an air rifle, the targets are at distances of:
- – Chicken – 20 yards;
- – Pig 0 by 30 yards;
- – Ram – 45 yards;
- – Turkey – 36 yards.
A regular match consists of forty, sixty or eighty shots. If it is forty shots, then in the match the competing shooters hit five groups of targets. This requires 10 shots for each type of target. If the number of shots is greater, the shooter can distribute the shots at his discretion.
In each group, the targets are knocked down in order from left to right. If there is a miss, then you need to move on to the next target. Shots that do not match the sequence are considered a miss.Points are awarded for all downed targets. All the pieces that remained standing are considered to be unaffected. The shooter must hit one group of targets within two and a half minutes. The participant has only fifteen seconds to prepare for the next group. When the work with all groups is completed, the scoring takes place and the targets are set again. If shots are fired after the time has elapsed, they are considered misses. Shooting is conducted while standing. The use of special gloves, extra belts and jackets is not permitted.
Classic silhouette shooting
The classic large-caliber shooting is distinguished and its smaller version – small-caliber shooting, as well as pneumatic. Small-caliber parameters (sizes of targets and distances, respectively) are reduced by 5 times, and pneumatic – by 10 times.
Athletes shoot at four types of metal figures at four distances. So, the types of figures:
- – The chicken is the smallest target that is 40 meters away.In its simplicity, it is considered the second after the pig.
- – Pig – is at a distance of 60 meters and is considered the easiest target due to its relatively correct size and short distance in terms of wind.
- – Turkey – is at a distance of 77 meters. It is the most difficult target due to its irregular shape (diagonal) and long distance.
- – Ram – distance 100 meters. This target is the second most difficult and, in general, makes the highest demands on weapons and skills of the shooter.
Targets are made of 6 mm thick steel, and the stands for them are rigidly attached to the figures. All targets have the same shape for all types of silhouette shooting – only the size changes.

Saving weapons and target shooting
In order for a sniper to achieve the highest accuracy when shooting, it is necessary that his rifle be impeccably clean. By the irreproachable cleanliness of a rifle, I mean one in which the bore is not only cleaned in the usual way, but also polished to a high degree of shine.Brilliance is necessary for very accurate shooting, and therefore the sniper must pay much more serious attention to cleaning and saving his rifle than the ordinary shooter. Hence the need to pay the most serious attention to this subject.
Removable reasons for decreased accuracy
Greasy barrel bore: this is one of the main reasons for inaccuracy, since the bullet encounters different resistance while moving along the channel, as a result of which the shooting becomes uneven.
Greasy bolt: prevents the barrel from tightly locking, as a result of which, when fired, a gas breakthrough towards the bolt is obtained and the initial velocity of the bullet decreases, which also serves as the reason for not shooting.
Locked Bayonet: According to the shooting regulations, a locked bayonet gives an upward trajectory deviation of 18 inches at a distance of 300 steps, due to the movement of the rifle’s center of gravity. Therefore, the sniper must shoot without touching the bayonet [33].
Note: a number of experiments carried out at the school of the 1st Army showed that the statute greatly exaggerates the influence of a mounted bayonet on the flight of a bullet.
Attachment: if the sniper changes the attachment, at least in the smallest way, his shooting will be uneven, and he will not reach maximum accuracy.
Ammunition: gunpowder of different production burns at an inconsistent speed, from which the shock received by the bullet will be of unequal strength [34].
Curled stock: the stock forend is designed in such a way that it does not affect the barrel at the moment of firing. At this point, the trunk should be completely flat. With a curved forend (which happens quite often), the position of the barrel is incorrect, as a result of which accuracy suffers.
The reasons for this phenomenon:
1. Moisture accumulated in the groove for the barrel and receiver rooms.
2. Uneven drying of the stock when the rifle dries in the sun or near a stove.
3. Too dry stock.
4. Wood not sufficiently dried before making a stock from it.
To prevent warpage, lightly grease the stock and the barrel pad with grease so that the grease gets into the groove on the forend and between the barrel and the pad.
The warped stock must be returned to the weapons workshop.
Fatal causes of loss of accuracy
Nickel plating of the bore: serves as a great hindrance to marksmanship and occurs due to the fact that the top layer of the nickel shell when the bullet passes through the bore is erased and adheres to the surface of the channel. This is a fairly common occurrence and should be eliminated immediately in the workshop.
Bore wear: There is a gradual expansion of the bore due to the fact that the burning gas passing through the bore gradually carries away particles from the surface of the barrel.This phenomenon actually determines the “fragility” of each rifle in terms of shooting accuracy.
Bullet derivation due to rotational motion: it is approximately 1 inch at 150 paces, which the sniper must reckon with at longer distances.
Other causes
Surface carbon deposits: appearing immediately after shooting in the bore. At this time, it is soft and can be easily removed by wiping the barrel; when left in the channel, it hardens and, absorbing moisture from the air, causes rust.
Internal carbon deposits: Forms inside the metal parts of a rifle and gradually appears on the surface in the form of sweat. It must be removed immediately.
Note: when the rifle is rinsed with boiling water, the pores of the metal are opened, thereby eliminating the perspiration from the internal soot. After using boiling water, the barrel must be wiped dry immediately, otherwise boiling water will harm the rifle more than carbon deposits.
Rust marks or shells are black marks left after removing the rust.
Shotgun Wipe: Finally, a well-used shotgun rub has been found to be more beneficial than a regular ramrod. Each battalion is allowed 32 such wipes.
Single shooting and shooting exercises
It should be noted that single shooting is a test of both the rifle and the shooter himself.
Determining the best hit group [35] for single target shooting is a practical way of detecting shooter or rifle errors and deficiencies that, once found, must be corrected immediately.
It should also be borne in mind that the best group of bullets or the area of dispersion that the shooter will give when shooting at a given distance, we put at 150 steps, will be the measure of his shooting accuracy at any other distance. For example: if at 150 paces the shooter reaches the middle group or area of dispersion with a diameter of 3 inches, then at 300 paces he will give a minimum group of 6 inches, 450 steps – 9 inches, 600 steps – 12 inches, etc.
This must be firmly remembered, otherwise we will correct the shooting in cases where there is nothing to correct, and only shoot down the shooter, and the result will be uneven shooting.
What does the nature of the scattering area indicate?
1. When a vertical group is obtained, we can almost reliably say that the shooter makes one of the following mistakes:
a), or he takes a fly of unequal height;
b), or he changes the vertical aiming point within the target;
c). or he doesn’t hold his breath when fired.
2. The horizontal group indicates one of the following shooter errors:
a), or the front sight is taken not in the center of the sight slot;
b), or he changes the aiming point in the horizontal direction;
c), or he does not smoothly pull the trigger.
3. When a good group is obtained, but not in the center of the target, but somewhere off to the side, one must assume that it is not the shooter’s fault, but the rifles, and the first thing to do is to check the front sight. For this purpose, it is advisable to have a gunsmith or other competent person when shooting.
4. If a very large scattering area is obtained, it is necessary to carry out a complete investigation of errors, namely:
a), check the action of the rifle;
b), check the target;
c), check the process of making a shot;
g), check the aiming of the shooter.
This procedure should detect an error that must be corrected immediately before continuing to fire.
5. If the rifle is in good working order, the mid point of impact should be 5 inches above the aiming point. If this is not the case, you need to correct the front sight.
Exercises in the range
It is difficult to say anything definite about this, due to the lack of uniform targets, shooting ranges, etc., but the following guidelines may be useful:
1.With mutual communication between the brigade’s sniper officers, it will always be possible to arrange a shooting range for the battalion in reserve.
2. In the divisional reserve there is almost always a shooting gallery for the use of units.
3. A good instructor can achieve excellent results in aiming and even shooting at a range of no more than 50 paces.
4. Exercises in shooting must be carried out from a rifle with an open, and not with a telescopic sight, the latter must be saved for:
a), sniper exercises;
b), sighting the rifle;
c), actions against the enemy.
It is essential not to expose the channels of telescopic rifles to unnecessary wear by shooting practice.
5. Each training must be gradual and competitive.
6. First of all, pay attention to the extreme accuracy of shooting, and then proceed to training offhand shooting, striving to ensure that the student eventually learns to fire a well-aimed shot in less than two seconds.
7. Always start with a single shot and correct any bugs found in the resulting bullet groups.
8. Regarding the installation of telescopic sights, check the installation as often as possible and hand these rifles only to the best shooters.
9. Provide sniper drills with conditions as close as possible to active service against the enemy.
10. Although usually the sniper does not have to shoot offhand, it is still necessary that snipers practice in this area of shooting.
11. Since an officer instructor can be incapacitated at any time, he must prepare a good non-commissioned officer as his deputy.
