Sachem Summer Enrichment Program Overview
The Sachem Central School District offers a comprehensive Summer Enrichment Program for students entering grades K-6. This program provides engaging academic and recreational activities to keep children learning and active during the summer months.
Key Details:
- Open to Sachem School District residents only
- Held at Samoset Middle School
- Registration deadline: May 31, 2019
- Program runs July 8 – August 2, 2019
The enrichment program is divided into two sessions for grades 1-6, while kindergarten students attend a full 4-week program. Classes are offered in two periods each day:
- Period A: 8:45 AM – 10:15 AM
- Period B: 10:30 AM – 12:00 PM
An extended day childcare option is also available from 12:00 PM – 4:30 PM for parents needing full-day coverage.
Program Fees and Registration Process
The Sachem Summer Enrichment Program operates on a fee-based structure to cover program costs. Fees vary based on grade level and number of periods enrolled:
- Kindergarten courses: $236 per period
- Grades 1-6 courses: $118 per period
A 20% sibling discount is offered for additional children from the same family. How does registration work? Parents must complete the online registration form, providing all required information. Registration is processed on a first-come, first-served basis, with strict class size limits in place.
After submitting registration and payment, parents will receive two email confirmations:
- An automatic registration acknowledgement confirming receipt of payment
- A program confirmation with full details on dates, times, drop-off/pick-up procedures, etc. sent prior to the program start
Can parents request specific courses? Every effort is made to honor course preferences, but alternatives may be offered in cases of high or low enrollment. Waitlisted students are not automatically placed in second-choice courses.
Refund Policy and Important Dates
Parents should be aware of the following key dates and policies regarding refunds:
- Registration deadline: May 31, 2019
- Refund deadline: June 7, 2019
- No refunds issued after June 7, 2019
- Refunds prior to June 7 incur a $10 processing fee
Why is there a strict refund policy? This allows the program to properly allocate resources and staff based on confirmed enrollment numbers. Parents are encouraged to carefully consider their summer plans before registering to avoid potential refund issues.
Extended Day Childcare Option
For working parents or those needing full-day coverage, Sachem offers an Extended Day Program from 12:00 PM to 4:30 PM. This program provides a safe, supervised environment for children after their morning enrichment classes conclude.
How does the Extended Day Program work? Children transition directly from their morning enrichment courses to the afternoon program, eliminating the need for mid-day transportation. Activities typically include:
- Outdoor play and organized sports
- Arts and crafts projects
- Board games and group activities
- Quiet reading time
Parents interested in the Extended Day option should indicate this during the registration process. Additional fees apply for this service.

- Kiddie Camp (starting at $399/week)
- Youth Camp & Pre-Teen Camp ($929 for 3 weeks)
- “Too Cool For Camp” program ($949 per 3-week session)
These camps offer a mix of outdoor activities, sports, and crafts. Shorter 1-week and 2-week options are also available at reduced rates.
Town of Brookhaven Summer Recreation Program
The Town of Brookhaven operates a affordable summer recreation program for residents. Key details include:
- Open to children ages 5-13

Registration for Brookhaven’s program usually opens in the spring. Residents should check the town’s website or contact the Parks & Recreation department for current information.
Choosing the Right Summer Program
With so many options available, how can parents select the best summer program for their children? Consider these factors when making your decision:
Child’s Interests and Needs
- Does your child have specific academic areas needing reinforcement?
- Are they passionate about a particular sport or activity?
- Do they thrive in structured environments or prefer more free-form programs?
Family Schedule and Logistics
- What hours of coverage do you need?
- Is transportation provided, or will you need to arrange drop-off and pick-up?
- How does the program schedule align with your work or other commitments?
Budget Considerations
- What is your allocated budget for summer activities?
- Are there multi-child discounts or financial assistance options available?
- How do the various program fees compare when factoring in additional costs like meals or equipment?
Program Quality and Reputation
- What is the staff-to-child ratio?
- Are instructors/counselors properly trained and certified?
- Can you speak with other parents who have experience with the program?
By carefully evaluating these factors, parents can make an informed decision that best meets their child’s needs and the family’s overall summer plans.
Preparing Your Child for Summer Programs
Once you’ve selected a summer program, how can you help your child have the best possible experience? Consider these tips for a smooth transition:
Discuss Expectations
Talk to your child about what they can expect from the program. Address any concerns or anxieties they may have about participating in a new environment.
Review the Schedule
Go over the daily routine and activities with your child. This can help them feel more prepared and excited about what’s to come.
Pack Appropriately
Ensure your child has all the necessary items for their program, such as:
- Comfortable, weather-appropriate clothing
- Sunscreen and hat for outdoor activities
- Water bottle and snacks (if permitted)
- Any required supplies or equipment for specific activities
Establish a Routine
In the days leading up to the program, start adjusting your child’s sleep schedule to match the program hours. This can help prevent fatigue and make the transition smoother.
Encourage an Open Mind
Remind your child to approach new experiences with curiosity and enthusiasm. Emphasize the opportunity to make new friends and try new activities.
By taking these steps, parents can help set their children up for a successful and enjoyable summer program experience.
Maximizing the Benefits of Summer Programs
Summer programs offer more than just childcare or entertainment. How can parents ensure their children get the most out of these experiences?
Reinforce Learning at Home
If your child is participating in academic enrichment programs, look for ways to support and extend that learning at home. This might include:
- Discussing what they learned each day
- Providing complementary books or activities related to program topics
- Encouraging them to share their new knowledge with family members
Foster New Interests
Summer programs often expose children to new activities or subjects they may not encounter during the regular school year. If your child shows enthusiasm for something new, consider ways to nurture that interest beyond the program:
- Look for related books, documentaries, or local events
- Explore opportunities for continued involvement in the activity
- Discuss how the new interest might relate to future academic or career paths
Encourage Social Growth
Many children form new friendships during summer programs. Support your child’s social development by:
- Asking about new friends they’ve made
- Helping them stay in touch with program friends if desired
- Discussing strategies for positive social interactions and conflict resolution
Reflect on the Experience
As the program comes to an end, take time to reflect with your child on their experience:
- What were their favorite activities?
- What new skills did they develop?
- How did they overcome any challenges they faced?
- What would they like to explore further in the future?
By actively engaging with your child about their summer program experiences, you can help them derive lasting benefits and insights that extend far beyond the program itself.

Summer School 2023
April 30, 2014
This year there will be not only journalists, physicists, architects and geographers, but also teachers.
All because we are opening an organizational and pedagogical workshop.
Yury Romanov, the co-director of the LS and the head of the workshop, talks about what experience the workshop participants will get, how it will become the heart and mind of the Summer School, and why it is so important and interesting to be the head teacher. 0003
In the twentieth century, a diploma of higher education gave a start in life. Today it no longer guarantees anything. We live in a dynamically changing network society, and we need a different education. One that is not about traditional knowledge-skills-skills, but about something else, no one yet fully understands what. There are many answers to this question, and their number and quality is growing as more and more signs appear that traditional education in the post-industrial world “does not work.”
About the organizational direction
One of the main content lines in the program of the organizational direction is to understand what are the explanatory models of what is happening with education. And also – what are its alternative options today. Perhaps the reason for the growing popularity of LS is that the summer school model is more in demand in the new society than traditional institutions and schools?
To be a member of the organizational direction means to work hard for LS. Thanks to the invested forces, you understand that LSH is done by you and you get a return in the form of that same network capital. Being a head teacher means communicating with the best teachers and guests of the school, many of whom have reached the top in their professions. When meeting a scientist/journalist/teacher, helping him navigate the School, arranging a lecture, you can have time to tell him the idea of your project or just get to know each other.
Members of the organizational area will be the most important people at the Summer School. It is we who will form the educational and household schedule, we will come up with school-wide evenings and meet the most important and famous guests. But our main mission is to try to explain to the Summer School and the entire Russian educational community why the non-profit LS project, which seems to be dominated by chaos and anarchy, is developing and becoming more and more relevant.
About the pedagogical direction
Many schools now have a sad anecdote: “We pretend to teach, they pretend to study. ” Teaching is built according to the old patterns, but society has changed and the old patterns do not work. The pedagogical direction is intended for the person who came to school. Did a lesson. Second. Third. Tenth. I tried to reproduce the model of those lessons that I experienced as a schoolboy, which then seemed wonderful. Faced with the fact that this scheme does not work or works only partially. I didn’t put up with it, I began to look for what could be done so as not to imitate work, but to do really useful things. We are waiting for such a person in our workshop.
Some educational blocks of the organizational and pedagogical workshop
Philosophy of education: What is education? Do we have the right to choose for children? Which values are more important: success or freedom, patriotism or critical thinking?
Educational psychology: How to motivate a student who is not interested in anything? How to become an authority for a student? What should a teacher be: an unattainable demiurge, a patient mentor, a friend?
Methods of education: Why old methods are losing their effectiveness and how to switch to new ones? Do you need homework? How to develop and implement a research project with students?
Organization of education: How to destroy double negative selection?
