Nike Dunk is an iconic shoe that has been able to influence many areas of culture and sports over its 40-year history.

PROLOGUE: UNIVERSITY CULTURE AND NIKE DUNK
Universities
In the US, the university culture is very developed. In addition to the main activity – education, colleges are also involved in the education of athletes. So in universities there are teams in different sports. Athletes receive scholarships, as well as a chance to become professional athletes. There are certain societies in universities. And thanks to these societies, students can develop in a more correct and balanced way exactly in what they are interested in.
SYMBOL – Varsity jacket
But back to the topic of athletes. in the yard of the 80s, the sport is developing more and more actively. Students play American football, basketball and more. A distinctive feature of the athletes is the varsity jacket.
The origin of the iconic varsity jacket dates back to Harvard University in 1865. The Harvard baseball team was the first known group of students to have large “H” patches sewn onto their uniforms. But these uniforms were not, so to speak, varsity jackets. At least not yet. Harvard’s uniform was a thick knitted gray pullover embroidered right down the center with a giant “H” that soon became known as the “Leatherman” sweaters.
Cardigans have become more popular than pullovers, leading to the need to shift the letter from the center of the chest to the left. Soon different teams from different schools all over the country were wearing slogan sweaters. And eventually the high schools followed in the footsteps of their collegiate predecessors. By 1930, varsity jackets finally took on the shape we are used to—wool jackets, leather sleeves, and chenille lettering.
SYMBOL – other equipment
Of course, in order to support the team, you can’t go out only in leather jackets. A jacket is like a symbol that a student belongs to a certain caste. University sweatshirt, this is the kind of thing that any student can wear. But what else could there be?
In order to develop football boots, there must be a well-defined production pattern. The creation of basketball shoes of that time is much simpler and more advantageous.
NIKE DUNK HISTORY
How did the Nike dunk come about?
It was 1985. It will be one of the most pivotal moments for Nike Basketball as it marks the birth year of the Nike Dunk. Created from the hustle and bustle of a young design team, the Nike Dunk Basketball Shoe was built around innovative performance that naturally translated into street style. The Nike Dunk Highs, released in colorways matching the top seven NCAA Division I teams in the country, were sold as part of the legendary “Be True to Your School” campaign.
Particularly attentive will notice that the poster depicts not only Nike Dunk.
Each iteration of Dunk focused on a specific color treatment for the respective commands. That being said, Swoosh has previously made deals with the University of Iowa, the University of Kentucky, the University of Michigan, Georgetown, St. John’s, UNLV, and Syracuse to confirm the Dunk High as their team’s official shoe. It was a smart tactic that allowed Nike to organically promote Dunk in and out of college arenas, championing a non-competitive approach to the sport as well as high school loyalty, and helping the brand reap the rewards of college basketball’s growth.
NIKE AIR JORDAN 1
The original Nike Dunk High soon became obsolete in the basketball world thanks to the fantastic success of the Air Jordan 1. But the silhouette continued to spread in a more casual and unfussy market, a market that Nike really didn’t want much at the time.
NIKE SKATEBOARDING
In the decade since the first release of the Dunk High, the shoe has undergone some subtle but essential changes. A nylon tongue to reduce weight and a thicker logo helped bring the shoe into the world of skateboarding. The brand failed to understand Dunk’s growing affiliation with skate culture along with these design changes, and instead deliberately released several ludicrous sneaker silhouettes to appeal to the same scene.
The problem was that those who rode their boards perceived Nike as just another big corporation trying to enter their world. The community defended itself and considered the brand openly soulless. Nike didn’t pay attention to the subculture, who actually skateboarded and pioneered the scene. Commercial success and market ownership were Nike’s motivations. Choad, Snack and Schimp were forced brand attempts.
NIKE SB DUNK
Nike Dunk with its design changes that were organically and lovingly accepted by the same skateboarding consumer. This marked the beginning of true skateboarding for the Swoosh, a start that felt natural because ultimately, as a Nike spokesperson stated, “the shoe was perfect for skateboarding.”
Skateboarders loved the Nike Dunk because they were cheap and affordable, and they provided cushioning, support, and traction. They are also easy to style, which is a big advantage for the community that was interested in the sport in the same way.
1999, Dunk low pro b, Lo CO.JP
In 1999, before Bodecker joined Nike and created the Nike SB division, the Dunk Low Pro B and Dunk Low CO.JP were released. Models began to appear on the West Coast and in Japan. These Dunks were the product of regional experimentation, each iteration pushing the boundaries of materials, textures, colors and design. Crazy colors paired with crazy fabrics, Pro B naturally echoes the world of skateboarding, bringing creativity and personality together. 9The 0003
Pro B was the first Dunk to include a soft mesh “thick” tongue along with elastic straps and extra padding. For the skateboarder, these changes have had many benefits, be it fit, aesthetics, and performance. The momentum around the two silhouettes and their many representations coincided perfectly with the rise of sneaker forums like NikeTalk.
At that time, the forum culture contributed to the dissemination of knowledge about regional and geographically exclusive danks. Buying and trading dunk online has suddenly become a reality, and CO.JP releases have played a part in this online frenzy. The CO.JP/Pro B models are considered to have given way to a pronounced sneaker mentality around the Nike Dunk in the early 2000s, expanding the reach of the silhouette worldwide.
NIKE DUNK CO.JP RELEASES.
When Sandy Boedeker, then Nike’s VP of Special Projects, stumbled upon the Pro B, the opportunity presented itself. Maybe this is the future of Nike and skateboarding, maybe there is something here? Bodeker and Nike created a new Pro B and showed it to skate shop owners, following the SB Dunk concept, sold exclusively in their shops.
NIKE DUNK PRO B
2000s or NIKE DUNK 9 era0009
The greatest era in Nike Dunk history came with the appointment of Sandy Boedeker as general manager of Nike SB in 2001. And also with the official launch of the division in March 2002. He was tasked with revisiting the brand’s sick approach to skateboarding. He has previously played an integral role in the improvement and development of Nike’s football division.
After a period of real trial and error, Mr. Boedeker and Nike founded the SB division and the Dunk Low Pro SB went into production. There was no real need to create completely new shoes because Nike was already making what the community needed.
“Skateboarders wanted this so it would have been very difficult for Nike Skateboarding to launch another shoe in 2002”
said a spokesman for Nike.
What could the brand do but update the Nike Dunk silhouette? Slightly modified, targeting more specifically the demographic they were intended for.
That’s why Nike redesigned the Dunk for skaters. Which not only matched their sport in design, but also recognized the entire culture of which they were a part. When the Dunk Low Pro SB was released in 2002, it included a thicker tongue and elastic straps to secure the Dunk Low Pro B tongue, a new insole, a Poron foam sandwich and a Zoom Air unit in the heel. Structurally, the model was created taking into account maximum comfort and safety.
Dunk Low Pro SB is produced in partnership with and inspired by Nike Ambassadors. In an effort to gain a foothold in the culture, Nike signed their first SB skate team, consisting of Danny Supa, Gino Ianucci, Richard Mulder and Reese Forbes, and released four signature SB colorways, each of which nods to a professional sports associate.
The collection was called the “Colors By” series. And included Gino Ianucci’s Long Island New York dunk, Richard Mulder’s LA dunk, Reese Forbes Wheat dunk, and Danny Soup’s LA dunk. Skaters and sneakerheads were willing to queue for days to get a pair. It was clear that this was the start of a long and successful Nike SB Dunk business that is now endorsed by the community.
NIKE DUNK key colors
NIKE DUNK EBAY
In 2003, Nike auctioned the SB Dunk sneakers on eBay in the online giant’s colors and font. The shoes in question sold for $26,000. And all the proceeds were donated to Tim Branch, a San Jose skateboarder who died of cardiac arrest at the age of 25, to build new skate parks in the Portland area. Apparently, the sold pair was not the only one released.
Nike made 3 in total. After selling the first pair, the second pair of SB “eBay” Dunk was cut into 4 pieces with a saw, and to find out the fate of the third, we had to wait until 2018.
When Alexander “Sandy” Boedeker, one of Nike’s most creative minds and a clear contributor to the success of the SB line, who died prematurely from cancer at the age of 68, revealed that the company gave him a pair the day he passed away.
NIKE DUNK PIGEON
It’s a misnomer to think that it was Jeff Staple who made the sneaker cult with the Nike Dunk SB Low Staple “NYC Pigeon”. However, what happened in February 2005. It became a turning point that turned the passion for sneakers and collectors into the mainstream. Pigeon has the credit for creating the limited edition race. Definition of hype before the word had such a clear meaning. But let’s start from the beginning, who is Jeff Staple?
JEFF STAPLE
JEFF STAPLE started out as a graphic designer, worked for various magazines and was passionate about screen printing. Jeff’s fashion career took a dramatic turn in March 1997 when he walked into the Triple Five Soul store in Soho. The store manager noticed the t-shirt and placed the first order of 12 t-shirts. From that moment on, Staple’s entrepreneurial success began to grow, turning his production into a full-fledged collection – Staple. After the first order in 2002, Jeff founded a creative agency. And in 2002, he opened the Reed Space store, where he organized events and art exhibitions.
Nike honored Jeff’s work. Invited him to take part in projects dedicated to the anniversary of Dunk, a basketball line that was born in 2002. Nike was preparing to introduce the “City Pack”, consisting of 4 sneakers dedicated to Tokyo, London, Paris and New York.
Jeff was commissioned to make a model of New York. The best sneakers of the moment, for the best brand, dedicated to the most fashionable city in the world. This is where the Nike Dunk SB Low Staple “NYC Pigeon” story begins.
What was the Nike Dunk Pigeon release like?
The design by Reed Space wanted to combine the world of skateboarding and the soul of New York in one piece. Jeff and his team decided that pigeons best conveyed the atmosphere of the Big Apple. The color scheme was inspired by the colors of the bird. Three different shades of grey, black and white areas, an orange sole like the legs and a nubuck upper to recreate the softness of feathers. The shoes were the last of the super limited City Pack series. Only 150 pairs were released, 30 for each of the 5 stores in New York. However, only in Jeff’s store in Manhattan were the shoes numbered. This made the model even more exclusive and spawned what happened next in the following days.
Staple noticed that something important was about to happen. When he left work, on the eve of the release, when a dozen people had already set up camp on Orchard Street.
The next day there were 150 people there. And the police helped the 140-pound bouncer to hold back the crowd. The NYPD arrested about twenty people, including thugs from the Lower East Side, who were hiding on street corners, ready to rob the lucky ones who managed to get pigeons.
Since that day, interest in sneakers has increased. There was a secondary market more serious than it was before. A cultural phenomenon in which art and music are increasingly interdependent also began with the Nike Pigeon. I Have Pop, a Dutch artist and designer, created a series of guerrilla works outside of sneaker stores in June 2005.
Nike SB DUNK MID
Throughout this era, the silhouette underwent further structural changes. In 2006, Nike introduced the Dunk Mid Pro.
“This was a major update because up to this point Nike had not released a version of the Mid, only the Low and High, in addition to the new height, the Mid also included a Velcro ankle strap.”
Representative of Nike.
Another notable change that has taken place throughout the history of SB Dunk is the box. Often referred to as the “box color era” of the silhouette, introduced “to keep things fun and interesting”. Many people refer to different eras of SB Dunk just by the color and design of the box. This allows the community to give each shoe a nickname, trace the timeline and development of the division, and differentiate between SB and regular releases. Sneaker enthusiasts kept their shoes in their original boxes when the deal was planned.

Nike Dunk Collaborations
Well, here we are. If you’ve read this far, that’s commendable. You must have a really interesting history of Nike Dunk. The most important thing in this part is the brand’s approach to collaboration. Since the release of Colors By, Nike has gained support from several high-profile and diverse names and brands. Each collaboration has been adventurous and unlike anything the brand has done before. Some notable early 2000s collaborations include collaborations with the likes of Futura, Supreme, Chocolate, Zoo York, Slam City Skates, Stussy, MF Doom, Jeff Staple, Diamond Supply, Concepts, and many more.
Nike dunk Special Editions
Each sneaker release has a rich history and is associated with a branch of the community. There is something for everyone, a huge variety of Dunk options in all colors, materials and patterns. Dunks color schemes came up with “Jedi”, “Hulk”, “Heineken”, “HEMP”, “SHARK”. And many other stories related to pop culture, famous people and material repurposing.
Nike X supreme
When SB partnered with Supreme in 2005, it was the first time a non-Jordan shoe had the Elephant printed on it.
Skateboarders who were previously ignored by Nike for trying to infiltrate their community for commercial purposes. No longer looking for mass-produced sneakers that are sold in every sports store. Instead, Nike made a commitment to releasing each edition of the Dunk in a limited edition. Sell it exclusively at a premium network of independent skate shops and conquer the group overnight.
If the owners of the skate shop, so to speak, the gatekeepers were selling these shoes, then there must be something in them. It was the mentality. And because of their limited availability and the places they were sold, skaters were the first to get their hands on the new pairs of SB Dunk. It was an easy marketing and reputation win for Nike, an important success factor for the Nike SB Dunk.
This victory in confidence also saw a new customer join the Nike SB Dunk launch day queue. Sneakerheads, those who are not related to skateboarding, and annoyed skaters who wanted to call shoes their own.
“At some point, skateboarders/Collectors had a special attitude towards sneakerheads. Many insisted that the shoes should be sold “TRUE” to the customer. So slogans began to appear, something like – If you can’t do a TRE-Flip, you won’t get sneakers. ”

WHAT’S THE DUNK?
Nike SB released their first video “Nothing But The Truth” in 2007. Premiered in New York, USA. As part of the premiere, there was an exhibition, the first ever sneakers from the WHAT THE … series flaunted on the pedestal. The first video, directed by Lionel Goldstein, features the Nike SB team. Marnell in the intro and Rodriguez at the end of the video.
They have collected all the colors of Nike Dunk for 5 years of existence of the Nike SB brand. It was a sensation, the sneakers were sold out very quickly. And of course you will be surprised, but they were available in Moscow.
Nike DUNK PIET MONDRIAN
Nike SB Dunk Low “Piet Mondrian” sneakers released February 2008. They were inspired by contemporary art and featured bold black lines and primary colors modeled after the work of Dutch artist Piet Mondrian.
Sunset Nike Dunk
By the end of the decade, skate shoes were in decline. In the early 2010s, the new Nike SB Dunk began to be sold in Nike stores outside the city. And regular models went on sale in major retail stores.
Pairs that had a high resale value many years ago. In 2015, they cost less than their retail value. It was a real downturn for the model. The Grails of the Nike SB Dunk sat quietly among the collections of skateboarders and sneakerheads. Those who managed to keep their couples will later reap the fruits of this. It took a few years before the new-found madness came into play.
The brand continued to partner with key players in the skate scene while ignoring major celebrities and brands. SB Dunk have earned and retained their respect among a wide range of audiences, both skate and non-skate. And it’s time to raise your status in pop culture as tactfully as it was in 2004.
THE RETURN OF NIKE DUNK
In 2015, Nike released a re-release of the Be True to Your School Pack colorways. To celebrate 30 years of running shoes. The dunks weren’t the miraculous catalyst for the model’s comeback. They have done a good job laying the foundation for the future.
That same year, Nike and Dover Street Market teamed up to release the DSM Dunk Lux High. Two versions – a solid black and white pair – hit the market in May. The DSM branding was on the tongue, while the entire silhouette had a minimal yet sleek look, highlighting the combined efforts of both brands at the same time.
In 2016, Dunk took to the podium. The Rei Kawakubo CDG Homme Plus Nike Dunk High version, a black/white/turquoise model with sheer vamp panels, was a game-changer for the silhouette, first appealing to a demographic that was very fashionable and not much of a skater. A new world has opened up for Dank.
WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW?
NIKE OFF-WHITE
The Swoosh logo continued to create buzz when they invited Virgil Abloh to try his hand at designing the silhouette. In 2019The Nike x Off-White™ Dunk Low was released in three vibrant and dynamic colorways. At the time, Virgil Abloh’s collaboration with Nike was the biggest topic in the sneaker world. SB Dunk was, of course, a natural contender to join the revamped Off-White™ lineup.
NIKE TRAVIS SCOTT
But no previous release would have had such an impact on the future of Dunk as when Travis Scott was given the green light to rework the SB Dunk Low. Something like that was in the air – Kylie Jenner was seen wearing exclusives. And as you know, Scott was a self-proclaimed fan of Dunk.
So when the Travis Scott x Nike SB Dunk Low Cactus Jack hit the market in February 2020 with removable paisley overlays and plaid print, shoe hysteria swept the model. It is considered one of the baddest cops of the year, with a painful amount of Ls filmed around the world. Travis Scott has breathed new life into Dunk and, more importantly, into a new generation.
How was 2021 for Nike Dunk?
Now it’s 2021, and this year has seen the release of several major retro colorways. Which have found themselves in the center of conversations, as well as their more “hyped” joint equivalents this year. So here is a useful list: SB Dunk Low Street Hawker, SB Dunk Low Supreme Stars, Dunk Low Retro White Black, Dunk Low Retro Varsity Red UNLV, Dunk Low SP City Market Dunk Low Medium Curry, AMBUSH x Dunk High Deep Royal Blue, Dunk Low Lemon Drop, SB Dunk Low “What the Paul” and more, much, much more. More than a dozen others are expected to fall this year.
How was 2022 for Nike Dunk?
So, 2022 is not over yet, and so far there is no point in summing up the results. To tell the truth, many releases did not even notice. Because they were puzzled by the information flow outside the project’s field of vision. But I would like to draw some conclusions.

Nike challenges the limits of human ability
Sport Express
This year, the best marathon runners in the world will try to run a two-hour marathon on the famous Formula 1 track in Monza.
© Sport-Express
Marathon is a serious distance for most runners. Its conquest in less than two hours seems like a dream, but thanks to the revolutionary Breaking2 project, this dream can become a reality.
Video of the day
Today’s record for men in the marathon is 2 hours 2 minutes and 57 seconds. To run out of 2 hours and reach your goal, you need to reduce this time by three percent. Many think it’s impossible, but it’s challenges like these that motivate Nike. This is another opportunity to change the future of the sport.
The Breaking2 team works with experts from various fields of science and sports. In order to help athletes break the record, an integrated approach is used and all factors are taken into account: nutrition, training process, ecology, technological equipment that meets all requirements.
Breaking2 is an attempt to prove the boundlessness of human potential. To run a marathon in less than two hours, you need to run each of the 42 km faster by 4 seconds. Nike had the difficult task of selecting three runners who would dare to hit the target. Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya), Lelisa Desisa (Ethiopia) and Zersenai Tadese (Eritrea) – this trio will try to achieve the impossible. They are not afraid of the unknown, they run towards it.
Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate, Boston’s Heartbreak Hill, London’s riverside, New York’s Verrazano Narrows, and the endless shores of Lake Michigan are some of the most famous marathon routes. Every year, thousands of athletes train to not only be prepared for the 42km 195m challenge, but also the unique weather and road conditions of each route.
The ideal place to run requires a whole set of unique characteristics: altitude, temperature, water vapor pressure. And this is not all criteria. Roaring engines and bustling crews of mechanics are rarely associated with a marathon. But big ambitions require thinking outside the box. After a long search, the Breaking2 team found the perfect location – the icon of speed, the Formula 1 track, where the multinational Breaking2 team changed the traditional city routes.
Who will win the marathon?
The course meets all the necessary parameters: temperature, no gusty winds, the sky is usually covered with clouds (which minimizes the impact on runners), and the air currents are not subject to strong changes in direction. The surface of the track at Monza is asphalt, which saves energy as much as possible, making it the fastest of the surfaces. There are no turns on the track, which ensures the uniformity of the pace throughout the entire circle. The track is 2.4 km long for perfect speed control. The circuit in Monza is optimal in all important respects.
