Lightning strikes again as Electric achieves unicorn status – TechCrunch
Wherever we are on the path to overcoming the pandemic, remote work is still relevant. Electric, one of the many companies making it easy for organizations to work remotely, has capitalized on this trend so much over the past couple of years that it has now become a unicorn.
Founder and CEO Ryan Denehy told TechCrunch that the startup has raised $20 million in what it calls the D-1 series from Harmonic Growth Partners, Bessemer, Greenspring and others.
This increase, which comes just five months after the $90 million Series D increase, was slightly higher than the last one and brings the valuation to $1 billion after cash.
Electric provides IT infrastructure to SMBs to take over most of the routine work of the IT department, such as deploying new hardware, ensuring that all machines and licenses are compliant, granting and revoking permissions, etc. This means that in theory, a company can only have one proper IT person or hire one to handle any troubleshooting or non-administrative work.
Unicorn Hard Data
Denehy has been actively raising money for Electric as the pandemic boosted usage and adoption of its product. Rapid growth has been the result of capital increases and favorable market conditions. In 2021, Electric said it doubled its user base and revenue, resulting in an increase in annual recurring revenue (ARR) from $17 million in 2020 to $38 million last year, or 124%.
What’s more, the company said it would roughly double again this year, bringing its ARR to $70 million or more in 2022, according to Denehy.
Since Electric was willing to share accurate earnings data and plans, the company provided a clear window into the current state of unicorn valuations. With an ARR of $38 million and a $1 billion valuation, Electric is worth about 26 times what ARR is today. This is below the multiple range in which many startups raised money during the 2021 fundraising period.
But things get even more interesting when you consider that the company is likely well-capitalized and therefore won’t need to raise funds again this year. This means that Electric could close 2022 with, say, $70 million in annual earnings and the same $1 billion price tag. At this scale of revenue and valuation, Electric would be worth just over 14 times as much as ARR, which, given its triple-digit growth rate, seems cheap even at today’s tighter market prices.
Electric confirmed that it had raised this capital at a higher price. Thus, we read that in the process, he did not scale his value enough to be in a difficult position when he seeks additional capital in the future. Indeed, if a company can meet its growth targets by 2022, it will look cheap in 2023, creating a good place to raise more capital if it wants or needs to, and maintain its growth.
Goal Acceleration
“I wanted us to expand our goals beyond the initiatives that we based Series D on,” Denehy said. “In this market, I want us to be as aggressive as we want without impacting the runway.”
Denehy expanded his plans by sharing several product initiatives that are in development this year.
First, Electric is working on a lightweight version of the product that can be purchased and deployed through self-registration. Building on this, the company is also working on a self-service marketplace that allows customers to purchase add-ons or other software (such as antivirus) from Electric.
The company also wants to be proactive with its product and provide customers with information about IT, offering guidance to help customers make decisions about security, new technology products, and software updates.
What’s more, the additional $20 million will help Electric close more (and bigger) M&A deals. So far, Electric has acquired Sinu and TechVera, according to CrunchBase.
