On January 12, 2010, a devastating earthquake struck Haiti. It became not only a test of the ability of the world community to quickly respond to emergencies. The impact of the elements tested the strength of the psyche of many people who worked in UN agencies in this country. Then 102 employees of the Organization were killed.
Of those who escaped, some, having lost loved ones and relatives, were forced to leave. Others climbed out of the rubble and returned to their places to help the people of Haiti rebuild the country. One of these people was Jens Christensen, an employee of the UN Mission.

An earthquake caught Jens Christensen at his desk. Feeling the tremor, he realized that he would not be able to run to the door from the office. There was only one thing left – to hide under the table. Falling debris injured Jensu’s hand, but he survived. As soon as everything calmed down, Jens realized that he was still alive. However, the table that had saved his life threatened to become his final resting place.
« Lying in the dark, I realized that I could not move the table. I tried to move it as gently as possible because I didn’t want everything on the table to pile up and crush me. I tried to lift the table with my feet, but I did not succeed. And then I realized that I couldn’t move from .”
It remained to wait. Jens spent five days in his “sarcophagus”. All this time he did not eat or drink.
« I went five days without water. And the appetite disappears on the second day. The last time I ate was Tuesday morning. The stomach, of course, rumbled, but there was no appetite. It was harder without water. On the fourth or fifth day, I was surprised that I still had saliva. I managed to lick my lips so they didn’t crack at all “.
If a person can live without food and food for some time, then “air” starvation can become fatal for him. However, our hero was lucky.
« At the beginning I was afraid that I would not have enough oxygen. I thought I was in such, you know, a coffin that I would suffocate in it. But after the first 12 hours, I was still breathing, and I realized that air was coming from somewhere.”
Jens Christensen says that in such conditions he could not afford to lose heart. In addition, he understood that with each repeated shock, his chances of surviving were fading before his eyes.
“ On the one hand, I tried to do my best to be comfortable, I tried to organize myself mentally, I tried to lie down so as not to destroy my shelter if another earthquake suddenly happened.”
Fortunately, aftershocks were not strong. “Sarcophagus” Jens resisted. But there was still no help.
« Just because I could breathe didn’t mean I would be rescued. I just thought I’d live another 24 hours, but I didn’t expect to be able to last the 14 days they say you can survive under the rubble. But what helped me survive was the hope that they would hear me, that they would save me. I was constantly analyzing the situation, thinking how to hold out as long as possible. I thought the search and rescue team would find me as soon as possible. I didn’t even know the magnitude of the earthquake. It didn’t even occur to me that the entire hotel had just become a pile of rubble. But every time I heard voices or the sound of machinery, I screamed and thumped. I think it’s pure coincidence that they were able to find me “.
A really happy accident happened. If not her, then who knows how long Jens would have to wait for help, and whether he would have waited for her.
« On Sunday morning, some apparatus that was working upstairs stopped working. There was an oil leak and they began to repair it. One of the lifeguards walked over me. I started screaming and banging. He heard me and knocked. Then he shouted: “If you can hear me, knock three times!”. I knocked and that’s how we managed to make contact “.
Jens Christensen, 48, will probably celebrate this day as his second birthday. In the meantime, he stayed in Port-au-Prince to help the Haitians rebuild the country.

Disney and Lucasfilm Studios presented a teaser trailer for the series “ Star Wars: Ahsoka ” as part of the Star Wars Celebration that started in London, which opened the release window.
The series starts on Disney+ at August this year and will be dedicated to the solo adventures of Ahsoka Tano performed by Rosario Dawson . For the first time in this image, the actress appeared in the second season of The Mandalorian.
