It is the main reason I will be going to the Boston marathon in 2017.” ~ Bob from Northern California

The camp opened my eyes to a world of possibilities in my own backyard — new trails, new friends, and a whole new community to engage with. Erica and her team of dedicated trail guides were nothing short of amazing — patient, knowledgeable, friendly, supportive, and kind — all first class! HUMBOLDT DISTANCE RUNNING CAMP
2022 HUMBOLDT DISTANCE RUNNING CAMP VIDEO:
The Humboldt Distance Running Camp returned in 2022 after a two-year hiatus due to the Covid pandemic. 86 athletes enjoyed spectacular running, essential skill development, and expert instruction over the 6-day event. Don’t miss the next opportunity to be a part of the running excitement in the summer of 2023!
HUMBOLDT DISTANCE RUNNING CAMP
Humboldt Distance Running Camp is an inspiring week of training amidst majestic redwoods, overlooking ocean vistas, and along winding rivers. It is also an opportunity to learn from top coaches and interact with athletes from a variety of schools. This experience is intended to elevate each participant’s level of performance and enjoyment in the sport of endurance running.
Humboldt Distance Running Camp continues the legacy established by Jim Hunt, who built the Lumberjacks’ track and field distance program into a powerhouse during the 1960s, 1970s and 80s. Hunt was inducted into the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Coach Hall of Fame in 2013.
During his tenure at Humboldt from 1967 to 1986, Hunt’s teams in cross country and track and field captured six Far Western Conference Titles and produced 64 All-Americans and 11 national champions. The Lumberjacks captured the national title in 1980 in the school’s first year in the NCAA’s Division II.
His impact on the sport continues to this day as many of his athletes promote the fundimentals of training he developed in their own programs across the country.
Cal Poly Humboldt Head Cross Country Coach Jamey Harris and Humboldt Distance Running Camp Director Kevin Searls are proud to host this opportunity for youth and high school athletes of all abilities.
NATIONALLY RECOGNIZED
Established by legendary Cal Poly Humboldt Hall of Fame coach Jim Hunt, the camp is recognized as one of the country’s premier developmental opportunities for youth and high school athletes. Numerous individual and team participants have gone on to earn section titles and state meet podium finishes, including several state champions.
Many veterans of the Humboldt Distance Running Camp have graduated on to success in the college ranks. Camp alumni include dozens of All Americans and even a few national record holders. Most importantly however, the majority of participants enjoy a lifetime love of running.
A COMPLETE EXERIENCE
Humboldt Running Camp is a 5-day intensive workshop addressing all aspects of training and racing. Workouts include daily distance runs on spectacular terrain at various locations on and around the Cal Poly Humboldt campus, as well as skill and strength sessions conducted in the beautiful Lumberjack Stadium and athletic complex. Classroom clinics cover a range of essential topics, including training theory, biomechanics, sport nutrition, performance recovery, sport psychology, team building and racing strategy.
All levels of ability and experience are welcome. Humboldt Distance Running Camp is open to anyone willing to prepare adequately and dedicated to personal improvement. The distance and pace of each run is based upon the current fitness of the athlete. Athletes are often grouped by ability for various sessions, and care is taken to ensure each participant’s particular needs are accommodated.
OLYMPIC CALIBER STAFF
In addition to a staff of experienced and highly successful high school, college and national team coaches, Running Camp provides exciting guest speakers. Olympic marathon veteran Mark Conover and National Champion triathlete Mike Pigg have been past keynote speakers. Olympians Leo Manzano, Magdalena Boullet, Kim Conley, Gabe Jennings and Jim Spivey have also been featured visitors.
TIME FOR THE TEAM
For high school athletes, camp also offers time for strengthening bonds between teammates and coaches, establishing goals for the up-coming season, and the development of friendly rivalry through games and contests between teams.
THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT
Cal Poly Humboldt is located in the small town of Arcata, overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Within the great redwood corridor of Northern California, the summer weather is typically mild, with misty mornings and an average daytime temperature of 65 degrees.
Participants reside in on-campus residence dormitories with comfortable beds and full linen service provided. Clean, private dormitory showers with hot water are a particularly appealing amenity for those used to camps held in camp grounds. Male and female participants will be assigned to separate dormitory floors or wings, under the supervision of adult live-in counselors.
Meals are served in the Jolly Giant Complex. Multiple entrées, a full salad bar, and sweet deserts, including soft serve ice cream, allow for a range of tastes. Vegetarian options are always available, and special dietary requirements can be accommodated upon request.

Zheleznovodsk Sportmaster Pro Mountain Race Camp
The program of each running camp is designed for two levels – for those who are just getting acquainted with cross-country running and those who already have some experience. This is how we distribute and control the workload of the participants.
During the training camp we give lectures on nutrition, recovery, competition planning and answer many questions. We help you learn proper stretching and self-massage after exercise. The camps themselves differ from each other depending on the location and time of year.
The high altitude camps held in the Caucasus are acclimatization, low intensity, lots of theory and light learning modules. These camps bring the participants to the races in optimal shape and with the presence of adaptation to the height.
Camps in Gelendzhik, Sochi and other lower mountains have an emphasis on teaching mountain running techniques. Here we have more opportunity to teach downhill technique on routes of varying difficulty, because downhill running is the biggest challenge for most, especially beginner trailrunners.
Camps in the middle mountains, which are not tied to any start, have the task of gaining good volume in order to then reach a new level of form. We hold these camps several times a year in the best locations – Kislovodsk, Teberda, South Ural. Here you can focus on training without thinking about too much, but also get the maximum theoretical knowledge. Our trainers know almost everything about skyrunning and trailrunning.

Children’s vacation
Most often, such a vacation is understood as children’s camps, but keep in mind that only older children can be sent on such a trip. The smallest tourists can go on vacation with their parents, and this will already be a full-fledged family vacation abroad.
Rest in a children’s camp abroad
Traveling is a great way to combine recreation and education. Children’s camps in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Crimea are very popular. Children are offered interesting and varied educational programs that can include everything from learning a foreign language to horse riding, tennis, golf, cooking lessons and other fun activities. Depending on the chosen country, the child is immersed in the appropriate language environment, and communication with native speakers is the most effective way to master it. Such cognitive rest is beneficial for children, especially since they have the opportunity to spend holidays with their peers.
The advantage of resting in a children’s camp:
- a clear and correct daily routine;
- harmonious combination of study and rest;
- individual and team work;
- communication with peers;
- broadening one’s horizons;
- active cognitive process;
- general health improvement.
Naturally, children on vacation in the camp are constantly under the supervision of teachers.
Family holidays with children
If you are traveling abroad with children, we can help you choose resorts with suitable infrastructure. First of all, it is better to choose resorts and hotels with a special children’s program, an entertainment area and animators. Such services mean that you can leave your child in the care of qualified staff while swimming in the pool, shopping and even excursions. Children will spend this time in a special play area under the supervision of a nanny. Also, bright and colorful entertainment programs are organized for young guests of the resort.
