We’ve long been fans of Rega’s Planar 3 deck, and this latest version – the RP3 – simply reinforces our enthusiasm.
In many ways this deck looks pretty much like previous generations of this product. It remains a very simple, attractive design, with the main bearing, arm and motor (all of which are high-quality parts) mounted on a solid plinth.
Suspension? Limited to three solid rubber feet. Like any record player, this one will always sound best on a level, dedicated support, as far away from the speakers as possible.

Improvements
The biggest changes over the last-generation deck are the addition of a strengthening brace (which is made from hard phenolic resin) between the arm base and main bearing, and a further refinement of the long-running and well-liked Rega tone arm.
The latest version, the RB303, features an improved, more rigid arm tube and better resonance control.
It’s possible to buy the deck without the cartridge for £475. We think most people will buy the package we have on test, though, which comes fitted with the rather good £115 Elys 2 moving magnet included in the price.
Sound quality
How does the RP3 sound? Very good indeed. This Rega builds on the balance, resolution and excitement of previous generations while adding more clarity, stronger dynamics and an improved sense of musical stability.
We played music as varied as Beethoven’s highly charged 5th Symphony to the low-key vocal-based XX debut set, and the RP3 never put a foot wrong.
Verdict
Make no mistake: this is a top-class record deck for the money. It’s easy to set up, easy to use as long as you don’t mind the manual speed change and sounds as musical as they come. The RP3 is a great buy and a worthy Award winner.

Many products are called iconic but that usually means that they are in vogue at a particular time, the Rega Planar 3 has been in production for 40 years and has evolved over that period to be one of the most highly regarded turntables in the world. That’s iconic. Its name may have changed slightly over the decades but it has returned to the one that got it started, everything else, however, has changed.
The new Planar 3 looks stunning, it has to because the competition has been outdoing it on this front for some time and music lovers are just as inclined to buy with their eyes as their ears. The new black or white gloss plinth changes all that and the placement of the on/off switch underneath helps both the looks and ease of use.
The platter is made of Optiwhite glass with a polished edge that also enhances aesthetics, but it’s the bits that you don’t notice which have had such a dramatic influence on its sound quality. The RB330 tonearm for instance looks very similar to its predecessor but its bearings have tighter tolerances and the armtube has been refined so that it is less excitable. What a record player needs to do is measure the tiny vibrations in a groove surface, the measurement is the music signal and you don’t want vibrations from elsewhere getting into that signal.
The arm base is braced to the new bearing housing with phenolic braces above and below the plinth, the top one having a silver aluminium finish. The sub platter – the bit that takes the drive belt underneath the platter – has been redesigned for greater accuracy. Even the feet and motor control system has been redesigned since the RP3 that came out in 2011.
It’s a comprehensive overhaul of an already remarkable turntable that has seen its sound quality go from extremely entertaining but a little bit coarse to addictively engaging and remarkably refined.
That’s the word, refined, now you get the pitch perfect, foot tapping timing alongside oodles of detail. The quiet notes are as well served as the fundamentals, so you hear all the atmosphere of the studio or stage and you can almost smell the sweat on particularly heavy tracks. I love the sound of drums on the Planar 3, the power, impact and immediacy is intoxicating, far better than any other turntable at this price to be honest.
It’s the combination of control, dynamics and timing that makes it so effective. Many turntables can give you the excitement and energy of a song but fall down when it comes to exposing the subtleties and nuances of the performance. This Rega digs deep into the groove and comes up with sounds you didn’t know were there, stuff that combines with the vocals and rhythms to create a bigger and richer sonic picture. It’s a bit like high definition video, but you hear the extra detail rather than see it. Overall the experience has more realism and a greater ability to draw you in, so much so that watching the telly seems like an even greater waste of time.
Rega has done a remarkable job of bringing its most iconic turntable up to date, not only does the Planar 3 look stunning it sounds even better. It’s not cheap but with hi-fi you get what you pay for, which is this case is spectacular value for money and guaranteed long term vinyl addiction.

Our Review of Rega RP3 with Elys 2 Cartridge in 2021
The Rega was born in the United Kingdom in the early 70s, and it has come a long way since then.
In 2016, it has been re-engineered and made a comeback as Rega Planar 3. Driven by passion and an innate desire to push beyond the limits of excellence, Rega’s team of designers has invested significant amounts of time and effort to create yet another masterpiece, the Rega Planar 3.
It is yet another culmination of 35 years of experience in design and it is coming back better than ever. All of this must sound tempting already. So what exactly is the hype about RP3, and is it really justified? Without further ado, let us look into what this beauty can offer in terms of enjoyment of the senses.
Bringing forth a new edge in design
Frankly speaking, the design of Rega RP3s have not deviated much over the course of its generations. Weighing at a mere 6 kilogramsx, the brilliant touches to its build does give off a slick feeling given its superb quality and finishing. Its glossy plinth provides for a smooth finish coming in both black and white, giving the renowned turntable a classy and timeless design suited for the modern era.
It is no wonder that the Rega has been able to remain as one of the favorites for music lovers.
What are the specifications like?
Like all Rega turntables, the Rega Planar 3 is a belt drive manual system. The arm base is braced to the new bearing housing with phenolic braces above and below, the top one finished with top-class silver aluminum. The hand-assembled 9-inch RB330 tonearm has undergone some major improvisation, with tighter tolerances and revamped bearings, making it less prone to resonance due to the use of 3D CAD & CAM technology. It comes prefitted with Rega’s own Elys 2 moving-magnet cartridge, which plays a huge part in creating the superb quality of music.
The brass main hub central bearing is also redesigned, giving it an improved fit and reducing stress on the bearing itself. With a double brace system mounted to strength the acrylic laminated plinth, it boosts rigidity and prevents unwanted resonance, which minimizes the loss of music and ensures its users get to enjoy every bit of detail of their vinyl.
This is further supplemented by the 12mm polished float glass and a newly-designed foot, all included keeping in mind of one sole purpose, which is to preserve sound quality in all aspects. Apart from all that, wow and flutter are also extremely unnoticeable after running through tests.
How do these translate in terms of performance?
So how do these improvisations contribute to sound quality? Upon testing out the Rega Planar 3, it definitely has a much lower noise level, which is due to the better CNC technology. I expected a slight metallic hardness on top and some bloat on bottom, but it was the exact opposite of what I expected.
Despite that the Planar 3 has never been famous for bass extension, this new model does outdo its predecessors and provide more weight, greater control, and a thicker texture. Not only the bass is extremely clean and detailed, it delivers 3 dimensional sound, an experience comparable to, if not surpassing, the feeling of joy and euphoria of listening to your favorite band perform live.
Anything in particular I should look out for?
With all of that cutting edge features, it does sound like Rega Planar 3 is too impressive to pass up. The RP3’s audio quality is enhanced by utilizing ultra lightweight parts that reduces resonance. It is also highly transparent with a well-balanced sound. Not forgetting to mention the highly regarded RB303 tonearm that reduces friction and introduces great stability.
However, speed changes have to be done manually by adjusting the drive belt. That would imply that the platter has to be removed, which does cause a bit of small hassle. There is also little isolation apart from small rubber feet, so positioning does play a crucial factor. Notably, its Elys 2 Cartridge does play a significant factor in its performance. But this is a sort of a double-edged sword, whereby when the cartridge is a more expensive one, the arm gladly absorbs its quality and brings out the music in its full glory.
Based on all that, its pros do greatly outweigh the cons which can be overlooked in the face of the superb quality the Rega Planar 3 delivers.
Another peculiar (yet wonderful) thing is that you get a lid along with the RP3, which is truly unusual among entry-level turntables, but that is definitely something more than welcomed, especially if you can’t stand dusting or if you have small children. This protective lid will serve as a savior from any unwanted contact.
What’s the verdict for Rega’s new model?
Apart from the previously mentioned good points about the Rega Planar 3, another plus point – that’s if you still need convincing – is its sheer simplicity in design. With everything ready in position, from opening the box to a fully setup machine ready to serve your audio needs, it will only take a mere 5 minutes.
Yes, the RP3 errs on the pricey side for entry-level enthusiasts. Many will find that this piece is out of their preferred price range, given that Rega’s popular RP-1 is only half its price. But this is not without reason, apart from a much better level of enjoyment it delivers, it also has a potential for upgrading to satisfy your taste for even better music quality.
In which case you can look into changing the drive belt for reduced wow and flutter and several other options.
We find that adding a TTPSU for better speed stability is definitely a good idea to go ahead with. Allowing you to change speed from 33 to 45 on the go, it’s a major time-saver given nowadays so many audiophile pressings are being made in the two disc 45 rpm format. However, on its own, it is powerful enough for anyone who uses it to fall in love with. First-look review: Shimano RP3 shoes
Shimano entered the cycling shoe market in 1990 when it unveiled its M100 shoe in conjunction with the M737 pedal for off-road riding. Twenty-six years later, Shimano’s shoe catalogue is stacked with almost 50 different shoes to suit a variety of riding disciplines (road, off-road, and touring).
There are four categories in Shimano’s current road shoe range: Road Competition, Road Performance, Triathlon, and Road Touring. Each category is self-explanatory but it’s worth noting that the major distinction between Road Competition and Road Performance shoes is that the latter are built for extra comfort.
The RP3 is one of Shimano’s lower-priced Road Performance shoes, and as such, aims to give entry-level riders access to some technology without blowing their budget. To this end, low-cost materials — synthetic uppers and glass-reinforced nylon soles — account for much of the shoe’s economy.
As for Shimano’s shoe tech, the RP3 utilises the company’s “Dynalast”, which marks a new direction in thinking for performance-oriented lasts. Where once Shimano’s shoes offered pronounced heel lift and a scoop for the toes, Dynalast offers very little of either so as to reduce tension on the forefoot, calf muscles and hamstrings.
A trio of straps is used to secure the shoes.
The lower straps use hook-and-loop closures, while the upper strap has a ratchetting buckle. Shimano purposefully offset the closures in order to reduce the amount pressure on the high points of the foot.
The nylon sole of the RP3 rates a six on Shimano’s 12-point scale for stiffness, in keeping with the comfort-oriented focus of the shoe. There is one major vent at the front of the sole and another, longer vent under the midfoot. As for the cleats, buyers have the freedom to use two-bolt MTB cleats or three-bolt road cleats.
Australian buyers will find that sizing for the RP3 is limited to whole sizes 37-52 for men and 36-43 for women. For those that need a little extra room, there is a wide fit option for men sizes 40-52 that adds an extra 5-6% to the volume of the shoe.
For this review, I was sent a pair of standard men’s size 44 shoes, a size that normally suits my feet but I found the RP3 were a little short. Nevertheless, they were immediately comfortable with a toe box that was reasonably roomy and the heel cup was deep and secure.
The straps worked well to fasten the shoes. The buckle was easy to adjust — even while I was on the bike — and it offered meaningful increments in tension. Interestingly, I didn’t suffer any hotspots over the course of a two-hour ride despite the shoes being a little short, which I suspect had a lot to do with how pliable the uppers were.
The soles were reasonably flexible too. Under hand, the majority of this flex occurred at the rear of the shoe while the forefoot remained relatively sturdy. This flex is a nice match for the uppers making for a shoe that is prepared to move with the feet rather than forcing them to remain in one position for extended periods.
Clearly, the RP3 is not for buyers looking for a stiff and efficient shoe. Shimano has other models for this purpose, such as the R171 or R321 from their Road Competition range. Then there is the RP9, which sits at the top of the Road Performance Range, but all of these alternatives are more expensive than the RP3.
All told, the RP3 is a well-priced entry-level shoe that will suit new riders or those making the transition to road shoes. Colour choices are limited to black for men’s sizes and white for women with red as a limited edition colour for men.

Neil James, Manager of Distribution Operations at Santee Cooper, South Carolina and chair of the Association’s RP3 Review Panel, presented the award on April 30 during the Association’s annual Engineering & Operations Technical Conference held in Raleigh, N.C.
This highest distinction RP3 classification, which lasts for three years, recognizes public power utilities that demonstrate outstanding proficiency in four key disciplines: Reliability, Safety, Workforce Development, and System Improvement. Criteria include sound business practices and a utility-wide commitment to safe and reliable delivery of electricity. Though there are 39 other city or village utilities in New York State, none have attained this level of accomplishment during the past 3 years.
