A Ross was originally going to be built in Davis years ago but was shut out by the Davis City Council for not being upscale enough, and the oft repeated fear that it would threaten downtown business. There was a bit of an uproar about it since at the time there were few, if any, affordable clothing stores in town. It was said at the time that you couldn’t buy a pair of underwear in town.
Here is the inside story from a former Ross employee: The brand name clothes are cheap because the clothing that Ross sells is either overstock or slightly irregular. Ross gets cheap clothes that other retailers were not able to sell or items that are defective. Examples of the stores where the clothes have come from are Macy’s and Nordstrom.
Many of the clothes on sale have been worn, tried on, and returned to the store over and over due to Ross’ lax return policy. The clothes are not cleaned prior to being put back on the racks. Please shower as soon as possible after trying on clothes at a Ross Store.
Ross does not actually have “Sales” in a traditional sense. In essence, they have an everyday low price policy. The prices are not lowered one week and then raised like at Macy’s. The notion of lax natural transformation is a generalization of the notion of natural transformation from category theory to higher category theory.
As a natural transformation is a morphism between two functors between categories, a lax natural transformation is a morphism between 2-functors between 2-categories:
Where a natural transformation has a commuting naturality square, a lax natural transformation has a 2-morphism filling that square. If that 2-morphism is required to be invertible, one speaks of a pseudonatural transformation, and if it is required to be an identity (which implies that the square commutes), then one speaks of a strict 2-natural transformation (this latter notion only really makes sense for strict 2-functors between strict 2-categories).

Categories and nn-categories of lax transformations
Lax transformations from FF to GG and modifications between them form a category Lax(F,G)Lax(F,G); likewise we have Ps(F,G)Ps(F,G) and Oplax(F,G)Oplax(F,G) consisting of pseudo-natural and oplax transformations, respectively.
Pushing it up a notch, for 2-categories CC and DD we have hom-2-categories 2Catlax(C,D)2Cat_{lax}(C,D), 2Catps(C,D)2Cat_{ps}(C,D), and 2Catoplax(C,D)2Cat_{oplax}(C,D) whose objects are 2-functors (generally taken to be strong or strict), whose morphisms are lax, pseudo, or oplax transformations respectively, and whose 2-cells are modifications. These hom-2-categories are the internal homs for the various version of the Gray tensor product on 2Cat2Cat.
Finally, there is a 3-category consisting of 2-categories, (strong or strict) 2-functors, pseudo-natural transformations, and modifications. No laxness is possible at this level (without “laxifying” the notion of 3-category).
“Lax” versus “oplax”
The choice of which direction to call “lax” and which to call “oplax” is not made consistently in the literature. The convention used above is Benabou’s original choice, as well as that of Leinster, Borceaux, and the majority of Australian writing on category theory.
However, some references, such as the Elephant, make the opposite choice. One or two references use “left lax” and “right lax” instead.
It is arguably the case that the direction we call “oplax” occurs more commonly in practice. For instance, icons are a special sort of oplax transformations (although if “lax” and “oplax” were switched, then the acronymic derivation of the word “icon” would no longer work). Likewise, when monoidal categories are viewed as one-object 2-categories, monoidal natural transformations are special oplax transformations (in fact, they are precisely the icons).
On the other hand, the convention used above (besides having a little more weight of tradition) has the advantage that there is a 2-monad whose algebras are 2-functors, and for which lax and oplax algebra morphisms are precisely lax and oplax transformations, respectively, under this convention. Thus, for instance, theorems such as doctrinal adjunction can be applied to lax and oplax transformations without needing to switch back and forth between two different meanings of “lax.

How consistent are different authors in this convention? Should we include a warning —or for that matter, a reassurance? —Toby
Finn: I don’t know myself, but back in May (see end of page) Jonas Frey said ‘Johnstone in the elephant and Gurski in his PhD-thesis for example use an other orientation than Leinster and Borceux in their books’. The one above is Leinster’s. I haven’t seen any of the other references.
Toby: OK, I just checked the Elephant, and it is reverse.
Todd: My own impression is that Leinster and Borceux are in the minority here, and that a bigger warning may be warranted. I think for instance that Johnstone is on the side of most Australians, who after all have done the most work in this area.
My own convention is that of Street: the arrow orientations in a product of parity complexes is to follow the usual sign conventions for chain complexes. For example, if I write α⊗f\alpha \otimes f instead of αf\alpha_f, and ∂−\partial^- for ‘source’ and ∂+\partial^+ for ‘target’, and interpreting ‘+’ as union, then for ε∈{−1,1}\varepsilon \in \{-1, 1\} we would have

{ob(C)}, whose algebras are functors C→CatC\to Cat and such that a lax TT-morphism, in the general sense of 2-monad theory, is a lax natural transformation with this convention. Ideally there would be a general rule which we could apply in any given situation to decide which direction should be called “lax” and which “oplax;” this doesn’t quite seem to be the case, but 2-monad theory covers the vast majority of cases, so I think we should stick to it whenever possible.
This isn’t just for consistency and predictability, but so that we can apply theorems of 2-monad theory without having to worry about the words being swapped around on us. For example, doctrinal adjunction says that given a 2-monad TT on a 2-category KK, two TT-algebras AA and BB, and an adjunction f:A⇆B:gf:A\leftrightarrows B:g in KK, to give the left adjoint ff the structure of a colax TT-morphism is the equivalent to giving the right adjoint gg the structure of a lax TT-morphism. This is one of those insufficiently-well-known facts that is frequently rediscovered in special cases.
For instance, given an adjunction between monoidal categories, to make the left adjoint a colax monoidal functor is the same as to make the right adjoint a lax monoidal functor. And if I have a lax natural transformation α:F→G\alpha:F\to G such that each component αA\alpha_A has a left adjoint, then those left adjoints automatically form an oplax natural transformation. I think this would be unutterably confusing if “lax natural transformations” were the oplax TT-morphisms.
Todd Trimble: I got around finally to consulting Ross Street about this, and Steve Lack also entered the discussion. I think you may be right (Mike) and I wrong about which is more common in Australia; certainly Kelly for example goes along with Bénabou.
However, the feelings about that in Australia may be slightly less sanguine then yours. Ross says he has at times felt this was the wrong direction (see for example Coherence for Tricategories, where the direction goes the other way). For example, the direction for monoidal natural transformations is the reverse of Bénabou’s.
When Ross asked Steve if his opinion on this were strong or lax, he replied:
“I don’t think I’d say I have a strong opinion.
“I agree that the ‘other’ direction (what has in Australia been called oplax, and which Todd recalls below) seems to be more important (e.g. prevalence of oplax limits/colimits, fact that they generalize monoidal transformations). I also feel that there is probably no perfect system – just as there no perfect system out which things are op and which are co.
“My ‘limits for lax morphisms’ suggests that there is a mismatch: 2-categories of lax morphisms have oplax limits, but again I think that if this were fixed something else would pop out elsewhere. For instance you can describe oplax naturals as being oplax morphisms somewhere or other.
“If oplax naturals were no longer called oplax naturals then the name icon would become odd (or should that be even odder) but part of the point of naming it was to get away these issues, so I don’t think that is too serious.

Ross summarized his feelings by emphasizing the wisdom of being flexible in these matters. Both directions arise and are important.
Ross also mentioned that the lax terminology began with the paper “Two constructions on lax functors”, where the transformations in Bénabou’s direction were dubbed “left lax”, and the ones in the other “right lax”. Perhaps we could use this terminology ourselves to avoid confusion, and cite this paper as reference. Your thoughts?
Mike Shulman: I don’t really understand the point of view that “the more important” direction should be called lax and “the less important” direction oplax. Are limits called “limits” rather than “colimits” because they’re “more important”? I wouldn’t say so—it’s just that we need to have some convention about which one gets the prefix. As Ross said, both directions arise and are important, but that doesn’t mean we should be inconsistent in naming them.
(Maybe inconsistency isn’t what he means by “being flexible,” but then I don’t know what he means.) Wouldn’t it be confusing if the word “limit” meant either (what we now call) “limit” or “colimit” depending on which one a particular author cared more about at the moment? And there are so many other really poor choices of terminology in mathematics, that I’m surprised people choose to fight a battle about the positioning of an “op.”
Speaking for myself, “left lax” and “right lax” would confuse me more. How do I remember which is which? Neither one looks particularly “left” or “right” to me.
Todd: Well, it’s not that I really care to argue about it that much. As a matter of historical record we do have different conventions appearing in the literature, and you seemed to be plumping for one of those conventions earlier. Now I can’t tell: it looks as though you’re now saying that the convention is arbitrary, but we should stick with the original (which is Benabou’s).
Linguistically, ‘oplax’ would be considered as a term derived from ‘lax’, so I think a natural tendency for people is to apply the primary term to whatever situation they feel is the more dominant. I think that’s what Ross must have meant when he said that he’s sometimes felt Benabou’s direction is the “wrong” one. (I’m not sure if that applies to limit/colimit; in one sense, colimits could be considered secondary because their definition in the enriched context can be seen as based on hom functors hom(-, c) taking them to ordinary limits in the base of enrichment.)
Perhaps I shouldn’t speak for Ross, but I know him a bit, and I think by ‘flexible’ he means not being too doctrinaire about these things – his tendency would be to state at the outset of a paper “by lax transformation we mean…” and specify the direction clearly. He’s bounced back and forth; apparently he feels the convention is not so strongly established yet that he needs to fix it once and for all, the important thing is to maintain consistency throughout a paper (or talk).
But maybe you should ask him next time you see him, if you feel strongly about this.
So I’m guessing that Ross and Steve are tolerant and non-fussed about this particular issue, and they in particular are not the ones who battle over things like ‘co’ and ‘op’.
Anyway, this whole discussion started only to sound a warning to the reader that conventions do differ in the literature. Note that I never said we should change the entry, and the arguments put forth for my own preference were not to start an argument. There are good arguments on both sides.
Mike Shulman: I’m sorry if I sounded too argumentative; I didn’t mean to. What I meant was that I’m surprised people have tried to change Benabou’s original terminology at all. I believe it was Jaap van Oosten who wrote that “the only thing worse than bad terminology is continually changing terminology.” Benabou did use some terminology quite worthy of being changed, like “morphism” and “homomorphism” for “lax 2-functor” and “strong 2-functor” respectively, but switching the meanings of “lax” and “oplax” seems like engendering a lot of confusion for very little gain, when the only argument in favor of it is that oplax ones are (maybe) more common.

Driven my the success of these records Levente soon started receiving remix requests from almost every major label in the dance music scene, averaging almost a mix a month. In addition his sets have featured on major radio networks, and he has been asked to play at many key clubs around the world. Coronavirus exposes lax practices for infection control
As coronavirus continues to spread across the U.S., experts say the outbreak is revealing the healthcare industry inability to control infections at its own facilities or protect employees.
Twelve people have died from the virus as of Thursday, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with nine linked to an outbreak within a single nursing home in suburban Seattle. On Wednesday, California reported its first COVID-19 death involving a patient who was being treated at a hospital near Sacramento, according to reports.
Infections spreading within facilities like the Washington nursing home indicates that staff may not be prepared to execute proper infection control and safety, according to critics.
According to National Nurses United on Thursday, 44% of surveyed nurses said their employer provided them with information to identify potential coronavirus cases. Only 19% of the 6,500 nurses across 48 states surveyed knew if their employer had policies to address if workers were potentially exposed to the virus.
“All nurses must be protected on every shift throughout our hospital and in every hospital through our country,” said Cathy Kennedy, a registered nurse at Kaiser Permanente’s Roseville Medical Center in California and executive council vice president for NNU. “When nurses are not protected the community is not protected.”
Sixty-three percent of survey respondents reported having access to N95 respirator masks on their units, which are recommended by the CDC for protection against infection. Thirty percent reported their employer had sufficient supplies of personal protective equipment in stock in the event they got a sudden surge of COVID-19 patients.
But the results also pointed to more systemic issues regarding infection control.
Only 29% of nurses surveyed reported their employer had a plan in place to isolate patients suspected of having coronavirus, while 58% reported their employer had instituted travel history screening for all patients with symptoms to assess their level of risk of virus exposure.
In the U.S., nearly 1.7 million patients acquire an infection in a healthcare setting, resulting in more than 98,000 deaths annually, according to the CDC. While evidence shows healthcare providers have improved in reducing infections, a 2018 report conducted by the Leapfrog Group found the percentage of hospitals achieving zero infections has declined since 2015.
Many hospitals are preparing for a major coronavirus outbreak by ensuring they have an adequate number of air isolation rooms for patients.
But a brief snapshot of isolation protocol violations of 10 hospitals conducted between June 2018 and January 2020 by patient safety technology firm Avasure found providers committed nearly 50 violations in that period, with 82% committed by staff.
Among the violations identified included clinicians going into isolation room without donning personal protective equipment, personnel not washing their hands after leaving a room, and nurses not being updated on isolation precautions.
“I think there’s a burden for staff,” said Lisbeth Votruba, vice president of innovation and clinical quality at AvaSure, which has more than 850 hospital clients. “Gown and gloves are sweaty and hot, and you think you’re just going to in [the room] and not touch anything and before you know it you’ve touched a patient.”
Several Avasure clients used the company’s video monitoring equipment during the 2014-2016 Ebola outbreak to check on patients remotely and reducing the number of times clinicians must put on and take off personal protective equipment to enter a room. Votruba said the same technology can be repurposed to monitor COVID-19 patients to increase the safety of clinicians.
The CMS on Wednesday directed state survey agencies to limit the focus of their inspections of nursing homes and hospitals to infection control and abuse allegations, citing concerns over a major coronavirus outbreak within healthcare facilities.
Dr. Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, acknowledged complying with infection control practices has proven challenging for many hospitals, which has led to lapses at every facility.
COVID-19 and influenza share many symptoms, and the nature of coronavirus is still relatively unknown. That may affect hospitals’ ability to develop better safety protocols.
Adalja said better protocols will lessen the need for hospitals to implement potentially harmful strategies like quarantining healthcare workers who may get exposed to the virus.
“That’s going to be increasingly untenable if we’re doing that because you’re going to have major parts of hospitals staff that are quarantined and unable to work,” Adalja said.

Do we know for sure that it’s real? I can’t tell myself.
But I remember reading something a while back where Diana mentioned that she worked so hard to afford a real fur, but didn’t know how she currently felt about wearing one due to animal rights, etc.

I’m with you, Skool. I am the biggest animal lover in the world, but I feel no need to inflict my views on others by destroying someone elses’ property. It could be DR bought that coat before fur became “uncool.” Destroying it isn’t going to bring those mink back! I am a true environmentalist, but this kind of bullying behavior turns people off.

I just adore you, Susaye. That comment made me laugh out loud, if only because I remember being a baby drag queen, DREAMING of my first Bob Mackie. To me, owning one would signal that I had “arrived”. Years later, I have not one but TWO “Mackies”, although the jury is still out on my arrival, *smile*
Since we’re on the topic, it’s well known that Mary has a touring “gown” collection from the fabulous and fierce Supremes; Susaye, I’m curious to know: do you still have any dresses/accessories from your days as a Supreme?
And I suppose I should mention, while I DO have two “Mackies”, they are, in fact, from his QVC “wearable art” collection.

Defender Ross is third Sachem North (NY) Class of 2014 standout to select Stony Brook lacrosse
It takes just over five minutes to travel from Sachem North High School to Stony Brook University.
It’s a short trip for sure, but for many Flaming Arrows’ players, it has become the final destination on the long road to Division I lacrosse.
Most recently, Anthony Ross.
The rising senior defender’s commitment was first reported when it was made on July 24 by Joe Lombardi on LaxLessons.com’s “Lacrosse Insider” section.
Ross’ path to D-I is quite a story. He did not start playing lax until eighth grade. He is a strong and athletic player with good quickness. He’s also a football standout for the Flaming Arrows as a running back/linebacker.
“He’s a stud athlete,” Sachem North coach Jason Mauro said of the 5-foot-10, 195-pound Ross. “He has a great motor and is a great kid.”
Ross is the third Sachem North Class of 2014 player to commit to Stony Brook, joining faceoff specialist Mike Calvagna and midfielder Joe Caridi.
“It was a factor in my decision because I’m good friends with both of them and I feel comfortable playing alongside them,” Ross aid.
Ross marks the sixth Class of 2014 commit for Seawolves coach Jim Nagle, who played on Ward Melville’s 24-0 1988 state-title winning team.
Now, here’s a Q&A with Anthony on his decision.
What were the main factors in your decision?
Academics. Also, I have a good feeling for (Stony Brook) Coach (Jim) Nagle and the lacrosse program at Stony Brook.
What other schools were you considering and what schools did you visit?
Other schools that I considered were St. Joseph’s, Limestone and NYIT.
What are your strengths as a player and how would you describe your style of play?
Athleticism , strength, quickness and my ability to be coached.
How did you get introduced to lacrosse and what other sports have you played?
I got introduced in the eighth grade when all of my friends were playing. I also am a three-year starter on the varsity football team.
What travel team do you play on what showcase events did you participate in?
I played with Sachem North in the summer and I went to Blue Chip 225 camp and many summer tournaments.
Any final thoughts?

Ross scores, plans to play lax for Union
This shot enabled Ross to earn Second Team All-FCIAC and Second Team All-State honors this year.
“I was really fortunate to see my hard work recognized by the coaches in the FCIAC and state,” Ross said.
During the recruiting process, Ross had many options but in the end, he chose to bring his game to Union College. Other schools he considered included Franklin & Marshall, Army, Hamilton and Colby.
“I’m really excited to play at the next level at Union,” Ross said. “I picked the school because it’s the right fit for me academically and athletically, and I expect to get things out of the program.”
Ross plans to join two former Staples High School teammates who graduated in 2010, Nate Greenberg and Jeff Kelly. Playing with two former Wreckers helped him choose the upstate New York campus.
“When I went up to visit, Nate and Jeff took me under their wing and showed me what Union is all about and I liked what I saw,” Ross said.
When Staples was on offense, it knew it could rely on Ross, who led the team with 45 goals and 20 assists for 65 points.
His ability to shoot spree didn’t happen overnight, he constantly worked on it.
“One of the things I love about lacrosse is scoring, and the only way to score is to work on my shot,” Ross said. “I work with a bucket of balls, and I practice a lot with both hands. I keep on repeating, and I never stop working, and I’m never satisfied.”
Wreckers coach Paul McNulty said, “Charlie is an excellent finisher. If he gets the ball in front of the goal, he usually puts them away.”
Knowing how to get open created many goals for Ross.
“I have a lot of trust in my teammates to see the field and McNulty developed the IQ for the team to be very high,” Ross said. “We always look for the extra pass and the extra scoring opportunity.”
Many of his goals are off layup-style plays where he jukes past opponents and find openings.
“One of my favorite things to do is to fake out the goalie and when I’m on the doorstep, I throw one or two fakes and try to get it past him,” Ross said.
“When I first started to play lacrosse, I was nervous and I tried to get it as fast as I could. I now try to slow my heart down and get it in the right spots.”
Shooting isn’t his only strength. Ross is also deft in feeding the open player and setting up goals off breakaways.
“We have great cutters coming from every which way,” Ross said. “If there are no defenders on them, I don’t hesitate to pull the trigger and pass it to them.”
Knowing where to pass it also makes a difference.
“The thing about lacrosse is you fool around with the stick, tightening and loosening the strings,” Ross said. “I tweak it a bit and I know where the ball is going to go when I release it from my pocket.”
At 5-9, Ross doesn’t look like someone who comes up with ground balls. He is living proof that looks can be deceiving as he gets his share of them.
“On most ground balls, I go in with a head full of steam,” Ross said.
“The one who wants it the most wins the ground ball and it gives us possession. I’ll go all out to get the ground ball.”
Life on the lacrosse field began for Ross in the fall of eighth grade. Growing up, he played baseball and was a catcher.
In the spring that year, he hung up his glove and bat and dedicated himself to lacrosse. He tried out for the A-team but made the B-team, which turned out to be a blessing in disguise for Ross because he had more playing time with the B-team and it helped his game.
He ended up making varsity as a freshman and moved over from midfielder to attack junior year. At Union, he’ll be back at midfield.
Leadership is a strength as he served as captain.
“It was a great experience and I never led a team before,” Ross said. “I was wondering what type of captain I’d be, a vocal one, an emotional one or lead by example. I felt I found my groove by the end of the year and I felt I held my own.
“
McNulty was pleased.
“As captain, he matured into his role,” McNulty said. “He was a vocal leader as well as a physical leader.”
Academically, he graduated with honors. Ross took five AP courses in his career. History is his favorite subject.
“I go to practice, go home, do my homework and that’s pretty much my whole day,” Ross said.
At Union, Ross knows he’ll have to raise his game to the next level.
“Everyone will be bigger, faster and stronger and I’ve been doing lifting and running,” Ross said. “I’ve been doing more training than what Union sent me to do. I go in to do what I can every day to better my lacrosse game and I’ll be prepared.”
McNulty is confident Ross will make it. He said, “Charlie will do well because he has the quick skills of shooting and he’s tough.”

50 years in the saddle
Today Vladimir Pavlovich PRAKHOV is a pensioner. 15-time champion of the USSR in equestrian sports, trainer of the international category, jockey. By the way, he is the only one in the former Soviet Union and present-day Russia and an honored coach and jockey. Earlier in the USSR there were 11 coaches of the international category and 10 jockeys in smooth races and steeplechase. Moreover, only three of them successfully combined coaching duties and were jockeys. Two – Nikolai LAX and Nikolai NASIBOV – have already gone into another world.
