How can coaches effectively teach pressure man defense principles. What are the key components of perimeter defense drills. How to defend common offensive actions in basketball. What are the best techniques for guarding screens and ball handlers.
Understanding the Fundamentals of Pressure Man Defense
Pressure man defense is a crucial aspect of basketball that requires players to apply constant pressure on their opponents. This defensive strategy aims to disrupt the offensive flow and force turnovers. To master pressure man defense, coaches must focus on teaching the basics of stance, stance angle, off-the-ball defense, and help defense before progressing to more complex scenarios.
One of the primary goals of pressure man defense is to make the offensive player dribble to their shot. This approach limits the opponent’s scoring opportunities and increases the chances of creating turnovers. By implementing a series of perimeter defense drills, coaches can help their players develop the necessary skills to execute this strategy effectively.
Key Components of Pressure Man Defense
- Proper defensive stance
- Correct stance angle
- Off-the-ball positioning
- Help defense principles
- Defending common offensive actions
The 3-on-3 on Top Drill: A Foundation for Perimeter Defense
The 3-on-3 on Top drill is an excellent starting point for teaching pressure man defense principles. This drill combines elements of stance angle, denying one pass away, and jumping to the ball to prevent basket cuts. Initially, the offense is restricted to pass, cut, and fill actions, allowing defenders to focus on stopping simple plays like the give-and-go.
As players become more comfortable with the basic concepts, coaches can introduce additional offensive actions to challenge the defenders and expand their skill set. This progression helps players develop a strong foundation in pressure man defense while gradually increasing the complexity of the scenarios they face.
Benefits of the 3-on-3 on Top Drill
- Teaches fundamental defensive positioning
- Emphasizes denying wing-to-center passes
- Develops quick reactions to offensive movements
- Allows for easy progression to more complex scenarios
Defending Screen Away Actions: Techniques and Strategies
Screen away actions are common offensive plays at all levels of basketball. In this scenario, a player at the top of the key passes to one wing and then sets a downscreen for the opposite wing. Defending this action requires specific techniques that align with pressure man defense principles.
To effectively guard screen away actions, defenders should go ballside of the screen, forcing an outside cut by the offensive player. This approach allows the defender to maintain pressure on the perimeter and adhere to the primary goal of making the opponent dribble to their shot.
Key Points for Defending Screen Away Actions
- Jump to the ball when it moves
- Screener’s defender moves down the midline in deny stance
- Cutter’s defender moves to the lane line on the pass
- “Shoot the gap” to avoid the screen on the ballside
- Physically “pull through” teammates using the bottom arm
Mastering Side/Wing Ball Screen Defense
Defending ball screens is a crucial aspect of pressure man defense. While there are various approaches to guarding these actions, hard hedging is a commonly used technique that aligns well with pressure man principles. The 3-on-3 on Top drill can be modified to practice hard hedging against side or wing ball screens.
In hard hedging, the defender guarding the screener steps out to impede the ball handler’s progress, forcing them to “bubble” their dribble. This action buys time for the on-ball defender to recover and maintain pressure on the offensive player.
Executing Hard Hedge Defense
- Get hip-to-hip with the screener
- Widen the body by extending the outside arm and leg
- Force the ball handler to “bubble” their dribble
- Recover to original defensive assignment after 2-3 steps
- On-ball defender reaches over the screener’s top foot
- Help defender moves to midline for support
Adapting the 3-on-3 on Top Drill for Various Offensive Actions
The versatility of the 3-on-3 on Top drill allows coaches to adapt it for defending a wide range of offensive actions. By modifying the drill, teams can practice guarding screen-the-screener plays, flare screens, high ball screens, and ball flashes. This flexibility enables coaches to tailor their defensive training to match the specific challenges they expect to face in upcoming games.
When adapting the drill, it’s essential to maintain focus on the core principles of pressure man defense while introducing new defensive techniques specific to each offensive action. This approach ensures that players develop a comprehensive understanding of how to apply pressure defense concepts in various game situations.
Examples of Drill Adaptations
- Defending screen-the-screener actions
- Guarding flare screens
- Countering high ball screens
- Responding to ball flashes
Implementing Advanced Pressure Man Defense Concepts
As players become proficient in basic pressure man defense techniques, coaches can introduce more advanced concepts to further enhance their team’s defensive capabilities. These advanced strategies build upon the foundational skills developed through drills like 3-on-3 on Top and help players adapt to more complex offensive schemes.
Advanced pressure man defense concepts may include defensive rotations, trapping strategies, and switching schemes. By incorporating these elements into practice sessions, coaches can create a more sophisticated defensive system that keeps opponents off-balance and generates turnovers.
Advanced Pressure Man Defense Strategies
- Aggressive ball denial techniques
- Full-court pressure variations
- Complex help and recovery rotations
- Defensive communication systems
- Situational defensive adjustments
Evaluating and Refining Pressure Man Defense Performance
To ensure continuous improvement in pressure man defense, coaches must regularly evaluate their team’s performance and make necessary adjustments. This process involves analyzing game film, tracking defensive statistics, and gathering feedback from players and assistant coaches.
By identifying areas of strength and weakness in their pressure man defense, coaches can tailor their practice plans to address specific needs. This targeted approach helps teams refine their defensive techniques and strategies, ultimately leading to better on-court performance.
Methods for Evaluating Defensive Performance
- Analyzing game film and practice footage
- Tracking defensive metrics (e.g., deflections, steals, contested shots)
- Conducting player and coach feedback sessions
- Comparing performance against established benchmarks
- Utilizing advanced analytics tools
Implementing a comprehensive pressure man defense system requires dedication, practice, and continuous refinement. By focusing on fundamental skills, progressing through increasingly complex drills, and adapting to various offensive actions, coaches can develop a formidable defensive strategy that keeps opponents on their heels.
The 3-on-3 on Top drill serves as an excellent foundation for teaching pressure man defense principles. As players master the basics, coaches can introduce additional challenges and scenarios to expand their defensive repertoire. By consistently emphasizing the core tenets of pressure defense – proper stance, aggressive ball denial, and quick help rotations – teams can create a defensive identity that frustrates opponents and leads to success on the court.
Pressure man defense is not just about individual skills; it’s about creating a cohesive unit that works together to stifle offensive production. Through consistent practice and a commitment to defensive excellence, teams can develop the mindset and capabilities necessary to implement an effective pressure man defense system.
Are you looking to take your team’s defensive performance to the next level? Consider incorporating these pressure man defense drills and concepts into your practice routine. By focusing on perimeter defense and adapting to common offensive actions, you’ll equip your players with the tools they need to shut down opponents and control the game.
Remember, mastering pressure man defense is an ongoing process that requires patience, persistence, and a willingness to adapt. As you continue to refine your defensive strategies, stay open to new ideas and techniques that can enhance your team’s performance. With dedication and the right approach, you can build a defensive powerhouse that strikes fear into the hearts of opposing offenses.
Pressure Man Defense – Perimeter Defense Drills
In Vol. 4 of this series we look at a drill progression that teaches defending common offensive actions. By using three-on-three play, pressure man defense principles are applied to various situations.
After implementing the basics of stance, stance angle, off-the-ball defense and help defense, it is important to begin learning to defend common offensive actions.
There are endless varieties of offenses, but within those are common actions. Developing rules for defending these actions is key. Once those are mastered, unlock the common actions in an opponent’s offense and apply your principles towards stopping them.
In a previous entry, the 3-on-3 on Top drill is used to combine the elements of stance angle, denying one pass away and jumping to the ball to deny basket cuts. The offense in the drill is restricted to pass, cut, fill action. Stopping the most simple play in basketball – the give-and-go – is a foundation. Making it difficult for wings to center the basketball is a tenet of pressure man defense and this drill emphasizes that and more.
Advancing the drill to defending other common actions is done by giving the offensive players in the drill different directives. Let’s examines some other possible actions for the drill and apply our pressure man principles to each.
Screen Away
A common offensive action at all levels of basketball is “pass and screen away.” A player at the top of the key passes to one wing and goes away to set a downscreen for the opposite wing.
By using 3-on-3 on Top and directing the offensive players to pass and screen away players learn techniques to defend away screens and downscreens.
There are a few different ways to defend this action but this approach best fits with our pressure man philosophy. Trailing or overplaying the cutter could result in a curl or back cut by the cutter. As discussed in the motion offense series, those are the preferred scoring cuts.
By going ballside of the screen an outside cut (out or straight) is forced. They gives the defender an opportunity to defend on the perimeter and follow the number one mantra of pressure man defense: make your man dribble to his/her shot.
Points of Emphasis:
- Players must jump to the ball. When the ball moves, they move.
- The screener’s defender moves down the midline in deny stance in-line with the rim. They would be the help on a baseline drive.
- The cutter’s defender moves to lane line on the pass (Line Rules) and “shoots the gap” missing the screen on the ballside.
- The screener’s defender physically “pulls through” his/her teammate with their bottom arm as the top arm is in a deny position showing on the screen.
- Highly-reward and player or group that shoots the gap and knocks away the wing-to-point centering pass with the outside hand.

Side/Wing Ball Screen
There are a myriad of ways to defend ball screens. They are a factor of a coach’s personal style or a scouting report on a certain player or players. 3 on 3 on Top can be modified to fit trapping the ballscreen, ICEing or “downing” the ball screen, flat hedging the ball screen or hard hedging the ball screen.
For the purposes of this #PressureManTips series the drill and points of emphasis will be on hard hedging.
Points of Emphasis:
- HEDGE: get hip-to-hip with the screener, widen the wide side of your body by extending outside arm and leg. Make the ball handler “bubble” their dribble, go with them 2-3 steps then recover.
- ON THE BALL: reach your away foot over the top foot of the screener and then run through the gap to recover to man and force back up the rooftop.
- HELP: Break the Line Rules and get to midline! even though the ball is at or above FTLE, get to midline. Look for anything “leaking” out of the ball screen (slip, roll or reject)
(Click on the graphic below to add the drill to you FastModel library. )
3 on 3 on Top can be modified or advanced to teach defending screen-the-screener action, flare screens, high ball screens and ball flashes. Get creative and think of ways this drill can be used to defend more actions!

Two press breakdown drills to increase defensive pressure
These defensive drills are designed for any team using a full-court pressure defense. Many of the techniques taught and emphasized in these drills are adaptable to other defensive systems and should ultimately allow your team to play multiple full-court defensive schemes.
Besides the obvious defensives benefits, these drills provide excellent work on a player’s ball-handling skills and conditioning.
Corral & Stalk Drill
DIAGRAM 1: This press breakdown drill features two defenders against two offensive players. The offensive player without the ball (2) must stay behind the ball to receive any pass from 1. The two defenders work on chasing 1 down and “corralling” or controlling the dribble so they can trap the ball.
DIAGRAM 2: If the ball is passed out of the trap, the defender nearest 2 must approach the new dribbler under control to allow their defensive teammate time to recover and help trap the new dribbler.
Corral & Sprint Back Drill
Diagrams 3 and 4
DIAGRAMS 3-4: This drill is the same as the Corral and Stalk Drill, except it incorporates two more offensive players and a third defender. Because we acknowledge that our press will occasionally break down, it’s important to run this drill. We work on not giving up layups and contesting every shot by practicing on getting back by sprinting and not just watching.
The drill continues just like before, except now the offense has the option to pass over the top of the trap to one of the offensive players along the sideline. Once a pass is made to 3 or 4, they should dribble hard and attack the basket. X3 must quickly scramble to his or her feet and protect the basket.
X1 and X2 must anticipate the pass and sprint to get back and stop the break. The defender closest to the ball handler should try and back-tip or deflect the ball, while the other should sprint back through the middle of the court.
Basketball drills for teaching the full-court man-to-man basketball pressure defense
Basketball drills for teaching the full-court man-to-man basketball pressure defense
Basketball is a game of fundamentals. Serious drills develop these fundamental skills that enables basketball players blend together as a team. As a coach you must be persistent with fun drills until the players become familiar with each other.
Drills should be designed to simulate game conditions. Do everything under pressure. Defense is taught best at full speed. Dummy work does little more than acquaint the players with the way defense should be played. Use break-down drills to lead into the whole. Keep these break-down drills simple, but do not spend too much time on a single drill during each practice session. It is better to work a short time every day on one drill than spend a long time on one drill for one day.
Keep players active and not standing around. Organize practice sessions so that every player is continually busy from start to end of every practice. Whenever possible divide the squad and have one group working at one end of the court and the second group working at the other. Both groups need a coach; however, if you are not lucky enough to have an assistant, use a most-experienced player to provide the necessary leadership.
Players who have obvious difficulty in performing a skill or executing a drill should be asked to stay after practice for special work. Do not penalize the entire squad for the failure of one member to pick-up on a drill.
Here are a few drills that have been used for years which will contribute to the mastery of defensive fundamentals. They lay the foundation for later stunting defenses we see, today.
Sliding footwork defensive drill Arrange squad as shown. Give each player plenty of room. The coach, or student assistant, serves as the leader (dribbler). Dribble right, left, forward and backward. The individual players react as if they were guarding the dribbler by moving from place to place using the slide step. The objective is to Teach movement without crossing the feet. Encourage players to watch the belly button of the offensive player. Conditions back and leg muscles to strenuous defensive play. To teach proper stance: one hand up to discourage shots and one hand down to deflect passes. | |
One-on-one picking up the dribbler Divide the squad into an offensive group and defensive group at opposite ends of court. The first offensive player speed dribbles to the other end of the court, who guards him until he stops the dribbler, or the dribbler scores. Players alternate lines. Objective Develop one-on-one defensive skills Force the dribbler to stop before he reaches his position by faking and retreating.
| |
One-on-one: Forcing the dribbler inside Divide the squad into two groups, one on each side of the floor. Break each group into defensive and offensive units. The first dribbler starts his move The first defender moves out to guard the approaching offensive player. After each performance, players change lines. Objective Forces dribbler to turn to the inside. Develop good footwork, stance, and a competitive defensive attitude.
|
In Diagrams D-3 and D-4, the offense has progressed into the front court. Defensive #1 is on the ball handler trying to force him sidelines, which is roughly defined by the shaded area on the right and left sides of the court. If Offensive #1 were outside the shaded area you play between the man and the basket (straight up), forcing the dribbler to go wide in either direction.
Dribble Used: Should the ball handler use his dribble, the defender, with both hands up, must move close to the dribbler and shout, Ball! Ball! Ball! In the dribble used situation, you want your players to set the goal of not allowing their man to catch the ball. When all outlets are aggressively covered this way, you minimize chances of the ball handler finding an open teammate. This also increases chances for an intercepted pass, a pass thrown out-of-bounds, or a 5-second violation.
Ball Handler Begins to Dribble and/or is Dribbling: Once the offensive player begins to dribble, the defender tries to maintain the same position he maintained before the dribble. The defensive mans head, ideally, should be over the elbow of the dribbling hand. Discourage your players from reaching, or slapping, at the ball.

Pressure Defense – Hoop Student
Pressure defense is a defensive technique typically implemented within man to man defense where an on-ball defender will apply defensive pressure to the player with the ball.
The general objective of the pressure defense is to disrupt the flow of the offense by limiting scoring opportunities and potentially creating turnovers.
Also, the on-ball defender should have active hands ready to potentially steal the ball.
In addition, if the on-ball defender attempts to steal the ball, it is important to not pick up unnecessary fouls by reaching in for the ball mindlessly.
Furthermore, if the player with the ball picks up the dribble, the principle of a dead dribble is initiated.
When that occurs, the on-ball defender will immediately apply as much pressure with fouling and will also have active hands up near the ball ready to intercept the pass.
Additionally, any adjacent off-ball defenders will quickly execute deny defense by placing a hand into the passing lane which creates a more difficult passing angle for the player with the ball.
Other methods of applying pressure defense to the ball handler is by way of the double team and/or trap defense.
The section below contains some basic examples of pressure defense.

Top To Wing
For this example, X1 applies pressure defense to the 1-man who makes a pass to the 2-man near the right side wing area.
Once that pass occurs, X2 also applies pressure defense to the 2-man.
While the 2-man is still able to dribble, X5 jumps to the ball and executes the principle of ball, you, man.
On the weak side, X3 and X4 sag off of the defenders and can provide help defense if necessary.
Wing With No Dribble
For this example, the 2-man has picked up the dribble which creates the dead dribble sequence.
Once that happens, X1 and X5 immediately execute deny defense by placing one arm into the passing lane of 1 and 5 respectively.

Basic 1-2-2 Trap
For this example, X1 applies pressure defense in an effort to make the 1-man dribble to the right side of the court near the sideline.
X2 initially starts near the right side elbow and waits until the 1-man moves across the half court line.
Once 1 moves across half court, X2 quickly sprints towards the ball to execute trap defense with X1.
At the same time, X3 moves up from the right side low post to play deny defense within the passing lane of the 2-man.
X4 executes nail defense by sliding over from the left slot towards the mid-line.
X5 also slides over to the center of the lane to protect the basket.
Pressure Defense Drill – Part 1
This drill is derived from Disrupting Offenses with Pressure Defense by Coach Brad Underwood.
It features pressure defense, denial defense, and nail protection near the mid-line.
For the setup, player 1 starts near the half court line while players 2 and 3 start near the low post blocks.
X1 will execute on-ball pressure defense while X2 and X3 will initially try to deny the wing entry pass.
To begin, 2 and 3 try to get open near the wings with L-cuts while X2 and X3 play denial defense, shown with the gray arrows.
At the same time, X1 puts as much pressure on the ball handler without fouling.
For this example, 1 dribbles towards the right side of the court and gets the ball to 3.
When that occurs, X2 has to quickly sprint to the mid-line and protect the nail.
Pressure Defense Drill – Part 2
Next, X3 applies pressure defense to the ball while X2 takes away middle penetration with weak side help at the nail.
X2 could also keep one hand in the passing lane to simulate 5v5 defense.
In the next part of the drill, 2 receives the skip pass from 3.
On the flight of the pass, X2 has to quickly closeout and pressure the ball.
At the same time, X3 (who is now on the weak side) has to sprint to the mid-line with a hand in the passing lane.
Afterwards, 2 and 3 can execute skip passes a few times to work on the pressure defense, nail protection, and denial defense.
Getting Four Man Pressure – Defensive Line Drills
It doesn’t matter how great your coverage is, if you can’t get good pressure on the quarterback, your defense will suffer.
And while a well-timed blitz will usually deliver that pressure, getting it consistently from a four man rush will make your job as a playcaller infinitely easier.
The following drills are fantastic for working on the agility and footwork that are vital in developing a player’s ability to beat his blocker on a regular basis.
Simon Says
Simon Says
This is drill is great for not only improving a player’s agility, but also improves their reaction time, and teaches them that they should keep an eye on what’s happening with the quarterback at all times.
Have your player(s) start off lying face down on the ground, watching the football. Do not practice on cadence, teach your players to move on the ball.
Now when you hike the football, move it immediately to one side of your body. As you do so, your player will sprint in that direction – until you move the football to the other side of your body. The player should be covering about a 15 yard radius, 7.5 yards in each direction from their starting point.
Go back and forth one or two times and then pull the ball up as if you are about to pass it – when the player sees this he should immediately charge the quarterback and just before he reaches you pump fake the ball.
On that pump fake the player will turn and sprint back to their starting point, completing the drill.
Around The Corner
This drill focuses more tightly on a lineman’s footwork, and their ability to explode not only off the line, but through the quarterback.
Around The Corner
Set up a tackle dummy, and stand some 5-7 yards in front of it. Place two cones; one a little bit further out then where your offensive tackle would be, and another 10 yards to your side and about 3 yards behind you.
The player should be lined up in a defensive ends approximate position relative to the ball, in 3-point stance, as close to the ball as they can be. When you hike the ball, they should sprint out to the closest cone, plant and sprint to the far cone, coming around it and accelerating into the quarterback.
Coaching Tips
Try using a green football if you have access to one – they’re great for challenging players to really focus in on the ball
Make sure to teach your players to take the most direct path possible, and not bend their runs around the pylons
If you need to improve a player’s ability to tackle a slippery scrambling quarterback, throw a player in instead of the tackle dummy and make them chase him down!

Soccer Drill to Help Sweepers Under Pressure
Sweeper Clearing is a defensive soccer drill designed not only for the sweeper position but for any player who finds him/herself in a defensive position that requires the ball be removed quickly from the area. In this drill defenders practice clearing balls while they themselves are under pressure.
Instructions
- Six players per drill group are utilized in this drill
- A, B, C, D, and E should align themselves, each with a ball, in an arc about 40-50 yards from the defensive player who is positioned at the top of the penalty area.
- Player A kicks a ball at the goal.
- The defensive player clears the ball up the field.
- As soon as the defender clears a ball, the next ball should be on its way in order to keep the pressure high.
- After five balls are cleared, a new defender comes onto the field to perform.
More: 4 Drills to Improve Dribbling
Points of Emphasis
Sweeper Clearing is a simple defensive drill. Players should begin to feel comfortable clearing away a ball when under pressure. During Sweeper Clearing, make sure these coaching points are clear:
- Defensive players should kick the ball away without trapping it first.
- Offensive players should keep an attacking mindset and don’t ease up on the defender — kick the ball to the defender as soon as possible.
- Offensive players use many variations of shots. Shoot so that the defender receives balls from the air as well as the ground.
Progression
As players gain an understanding of the game, further variations include:
- Using a second defender to back up the first defender.
- Adding more offenders who will take more shots.
- Moving the offensive players closer to the defender when taking shots.
- Having offensive players run towards the goal as the next offensive player takes a shot to increase the pressure on the defender.
More: Soccer 101: Positional Breakdown
Motivation / Teaching Tips
- A defender simply needs to get a foot on the ball and kick it away and should avoid trying to do anything fancy, especially if he/she is the last line of defense in front of the goalie.
- Encourage offensive players to make their shots towards the defender/goal be as accurate as possible. This drill works shooting as well as serves as practice for the defender.
- Award a defender who successfully clears all 5 balls into the opposition’s zone.

Large-scale interagency research exercises to protect the northern territories from emergencies will be held for the first time in seven Arctic regions on September 7 and 8. In the Northwestern Federal District, they will affect the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the Komi Republic and the Nenets Autonomous Okrug.
“This will not be a classic exercise, in which rescuers simply arrive at the scene and deploy their forces and means,” explained Alexander Bondar, director of the Department of Educational, Scientific and Technical Activities of the EMERCOM of Russia. – In the course of these experimental research exercises, specific scientific tasks will be set, which we will try to solve, including with the help of new technologies. For example, in Dudinka we will use a laser developed by Rosatom to safely open an ignited oil tank and extinguish a fire. Nobody else in the world has solved such a problem.
The twelve introductions for the upcoming teachings are largely inspired by life itself. For example, in the northern regions, oil spills have become more frequent, and fires have already reached the tundra – these situations will be worked out, among others.According to the scenario of the exercises in Arkhangelsk, an oil spill will occur in the water area of the seaport. In Murmansk, there will be an accident on a foreign passenger ship. Where to deliver 2500 citizens of other countries who do not have visas and find themselves on the territory of Russia in an emergency? The border service will be involved in solving this problem. In rescuing the victims, the Norwegian experience of “carousel” evacuation from a sea vessel will be used.
In addition, special work will be carried out in Murmansk at an underwater facility that is a potential hazard.
– There are about 18 thousand such objects in the western part of the Arctic, – said Alexander Bondar. – The Ministry of Emergency Situations is entrusted with the function of their identification, elimination of danger, analysis and control of consequences. Systems for monitoring potentially dangerous underwater objects are now being created. For these purposes, it is planned to build an Arc5 class vessel.
An important introduction – the epizootic caused by anthrax – will be worked out in the NAO. A feature of the upcoming exercises is the participation of various ministries and departments, research organizations, state corporations and business entities.Without the interaction of all parties, it is impossible to ensure the comprehensive security of the Arctic, experts say.
Aviation will work in Arctic rescue centers in three years.
In Vorkuta, the consequences of a possible accident at the mine will be liquidated. An experiment with extinguishing a 14-storey hospital building will be conducted in Norilsk. For most of the year in the Arctic, it is difficult even to simply get water, but during exercises it will have to be raised to a height. And all this – in conditions of coronavirus infection, when patients must be evacuated separately.By the way, according to the scenario, the victims will be delivered from a foreign ship in Murmansk to the same hospital.
How important it is to protect the vulnerable Arctic from all sorts of dangers was shown by the environmental emergency in Norilsk, where the largest oil spill occurred in 2020. After that, a course was taken on the prevention of emergencies in the Arctic zone and the creation of Arctic integrated emergency rescue centers, on the basis of which aviation will also work. It is assumed that by 2024 the entire Northern Sea Route and the largest infrastructure projects of the RF AZ will be covered by rescue air transport.
Russia is increasing the number of military exercises
The Russian Ministry of Defense has planned more than 4800 exercises of various scales and over 9000 practical combat training events in 2020. This was announced during a conference call on Monday by Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu. The largest of them will be the Kavkaz strategic command and staff exercise in September 2020, he said.
Announced number of exercises for next year is approaching 2015 level., when the military conducted about 5,000 tactical, tactical-special and command-staff exercises. For the Armed Forces, this was the first full year after the entry of Crimea and Sevastopol into Russia, says a Vedomosti source in the military administration: a significant part of the combat training activities concerned the Southern Military District, to which the peninsula was some landfills were used within the framework of the Center-2015 command and control school. In 2015–2019 the number of exercises averaged 3,800-4,000 (lowest in 2017)- 2800, the highest – over 4000 in 2019), but now their number will rise again. The main task of the planned exercises is to prepare personnel for the conduct of hostilities in the southern and southwestern theaters of operations on the eve of the Kavkaz-2020 command and control squadron, says an interlocutor close to the Ministry of Defense: servicemen and their commanders will have to go through dozens and hundreds of both local and and large (at the level of combined arms formations and naval strike groups of several fleets) exercises. Particular emphasis will be placed on working out the interaction of headquarters and interspecific groupings formed at the site of a simulated battle, he clarifies: such a practice was introduced into the troops based on the analysis of the Syrian experience, and now it needs to be expanded to all military command and control bodies.
Editor of the magazine “Arsenal of the Fatherland” Alexei Leonkov links the increase in the number of exercises with the difficult geopolitical situation and the position of the NATO member states, which brought many accusations against Russia at the last summit in London. In September, Vadim Skibitsky, a spokesman for the department of the main intelligence directorate of the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense, said that during the Caucasus-2020 exercise, Russia would practice an invasion of Ukraine.
But these statements have nothing to do with reality, a high-ranking diplomatic source told Vedomosti, on the eve of the command and control exercise, Russia will voluntarily inform the states about the goals and objectives of the exercises, as well as disclose their intention and invite observers directly to the training grounds: “We cannot refuse from conducting exercises on the territory of their country only because someone does not like it, but they are ready to convey their position to partners. “The main thing in the exercises is, of course, combat training, agrees a person close to the Ministry of Defense, but the demonstration of the growing potential of the Russian army in one of the key areas plays an important role, especially in light of the continuously growing pressure on Russia’s borders.
Exercises “West-2021” started in Russia and Belarus
On Thursday, the official opening of the Russian-Belarusian strategic exercises “West-2021” took place at the military training ground in Mulino, in which the Deputy Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation Nikolai Pankov took part.He noted that exercises as part of a coalition of states help to develop a common understanding in the training of troops, strengthen friendship and erase language barriers, and form new joint traditions of military brotherhood.
Then, the units participating in the maneuvers marched in a solemn march: servicemen of military units and units of the Western Military District, representatives of the leadership headquarters and personnel of the military contingents of the armed forces of Armenia, Belarus, India, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
“On the parade ground of the field camp (in Mulino -“ Gazeta.Ru ”), in the presence of officials from the headquarters of the leadership of the exercise and all personnel, the exercise flag and state flags of the participating countries were raised in a solemn atmosphere,” quotes the words of the Russian Ministry of Defense RIA “ News “.
The Belarusian part of the exercise began at the Obuz-Lesnovsky military training ground in the Brest region. The chief of the Belarusian General Staff, Deputy Defense Minister Viktor Gulevich addressed the servicemen with a welcoming speech, noting that the military-political situation in the world and in the CSTO area of responsibility was becoming more and more tense.
“The Caucasus region was shaken by the war for Nagorno-Karabakh. In the Central Asian region, after the withdrawal of NATO troops and the coming to power of the Taliban (the organization is banned in Russia), a military conflict in Afghanistan flared up with renewed vigor, ”Radio Sputnik quoted him as saying.
Information about the West-2021 exercises provoked a reaction in the West. Thus, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg called on Russia to openly talk about the West-2021 joint exercises with Belarus and to name the number of military personnel participating in them because of the fears of the Baltic countries, Poland and Ukraine about Moscow’s intentions.
“Russia must behave in a predictable and transparent manner. What we have seen before is that the number of troops participating in the exercises is much higher than announced, “- said the head of the North Atlantic Alliance in early September.
Stoltenberg also noted that the high tension on the border between Belarus and NATO is associated with Minsk’s attempts to put pressure on the EU by pushing migrants to Lithuania.
“Belarus turns migration into a weapon. We decided to send a group of experts to Lithuania next week to help Lithuania resist the hybrid actions of Alexander Lukashenko’s regime, ”he said.
In turn, the official representative of the Oana Lungesku bloc said that each country can train its armed forces – but with conditions.
“All countries have the right to train their armed forces, but transparency obligations must also be respected. We call on Russia and Belarus to act in a predictable and transparent manner, in accordance with international obligations. This is especially important in order to reduce risks and avoid any incidents and accidents in a situation where military activity increases along our borders, ”said Lungescu.
First Deputy Head of the Main Directorate of International Military Cooperation of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation Yevgeny Ilyin previously noted that a specific country is not considered as an enemy in the Zapad-2021 exercises. He said that a conditional military-political situation would be created during the exercises, where the conditional state “Polar Republic” would act as an adversary.
“It is assumed that, having developed armed forces, the enemy is making attempts to force pressure on the“ Central Federation ”. The escalation of tension is developing into an armed conflict, ”Ilyin said.

The maneuvers will take place in the waters of the Barents and Kara Seas, the Laptev Sea and the Franz Josef Land archipelago. To participate in the maneuvers, the air defense units left the air defense units – the combat crews of the S-300 and S-400 air defense systems, as well as the Pantsir S-1 air defense missile system.
90,000 media learned about Kiev’s request for weapons from Berlin to protect the coast – RBK
Soyuz 90 / Greens Chancellor candidate Annalena Berbock said in an interview with Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung that, in her opinion, the demining of territories in southeastern Ukraine is a priority than providing the country with weapons. She also noted that the most important step now would be to increase pressure on Russia after the country has concentrated its troops on the border with Ukraine.Berbock stressed that it is necessary to ensure the implementation of the Minsk agreements and the access of OSCE observers to all areas of Donbass.
Ukrainian Ambassador to Germany Andriy Melnyk said that he was disappointed with Berbock’s position. “Unfortunately, we have a refusal both to provide Kiev with defensive weapons and NATO. This is disappointing. Therefore, it is time to cast aside illusions about the change in Berlin’s policy after the elections and rely only on our own strengths, ”he wrote on Twitter.

Ukrainian Foreign Ministry protested to Russia over exercises in the Black Sea
Relations between Russia and Ukraine worsened at the end of March, when it became known that Russian troops were concentrating in areas bordering Ukraine, including Crimea.
The Ministry of Defense explained that they are conducting military exercises. The Kremlin stressed that the redeployment of troops does not pose a threat to third countries. However, Kiev considered it a threat to the country’s security. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy called what was happening “muscle flexing” under the guise of exercises.
At the beginning of April, Ukraine announced a gathering of units in the southern border regions of the country to prepare for the protection of the state’s borders, the protection of certain objects, and the fight against saboteurs. In particular, exercises were planned to protect the border with the Crimea and cover the airborne accessible sections of the coast.

Download original
On September 7, 2021, in the north of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, interdepartmental experimental research exercises will be held for the first time.
Within 2 days, employees of the Russian Emergencies Ministry and representatives of other departments in Norilsk and Dudinka will work out 5 “emergency situations” that may arise in the Siberian Arctic. This is the first time such exercises are being held in Russia.
Such exercises are held for the first time in the history of Russia. Their main feature will be their experimental and research character. As part of the development of the input, various scientific developments and new technologies will be tested. Thus, it is planned to use new alternative energy sources, fast-hardening foam and laser cutting.
Also, the teaching is of an interdepartmental nature. Representatives of various law enforcement agencies, institutes of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, research companies and large holdings will come to the north of the region.
Employees of emergency departments will have to extinguish a fire on a ship carrying hazardous chemicals in the seaport of Dudinka. According to legend, when loading chlorine cylinders, a high-pressure fuel line ruptured, a jet of diesel fuel hit the manifold of a diesel generator.Chlorine cylinders fell out of the transport cassette, and a leak began. At the same time, it is necessary to rescue the “victims”, two of whom were overboard.
Combustion of oil products will also occur at the Dudinsk oil storage facility and the subsequent spill of hazardous substances into the water area of the river. Yenisei. An emergency will happen during repair work on the breathing fittings of the tank RVS-5000 No. 84. Then it will become known that when pumping oil products, the pipeline support was displaced with a subsequent rupture.Because of this, oil products will end up in the river. EMERCOM employees, together with representatives of other departments, will have to protect the river flora and fauna from hazardous substances.
On the same day, a natural “fire” will start in the tundra zone on the island between the channels of the Dudinka and Yenisei rivers opposite the unloading pier. The extinguishing will be carried out by IL-76, BE-200 aircraft and a robotic complex for the installation of protective fast-hardening foam.
The next day, there will be a “fire” at the inspection hospital where patients with coronavirus are being treated.According to legend, a short circuit will occur. It is necessary to evacuate staff and patients from the hospital building. The situation is complicated by the fact that there are people with limited mobility in the institution, connected to ventilators, and at the moment of fire there is a surgical operation that cannot be interrupted.
The teachings will become truly large-scale. They will involve the forces and means of the Russian Emergencies Ministry, the Civil Defense and Emergencies Agency of the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Leader Center for Special Risk Rescue Operations and various departments within the RSChS system.
Such exercises will simultaneously take place in 7 regions of Russia: the Arkhangelsk and Murmansk regions, the republics of Komi and Yakutia, the Krasnoyarsk Territory, the Nenets and Chukotka Autonomous Districts.
90,000 The purpose of the exercise is to work out the interaction
Today, in Sestroretsk, exercises were held on the actions of the command and control bodies and forces of the Kurortny district of the link of the St. Petersburg territorial subsystem of the unified state system for preventing and eliminating the consequences of an emergency in the event of a collapse of the entrance of a residential building.Entrance No. 2 of house No. 3 on May 1 street was chosen as the object of the exercise.
Members of the operational and emergency dispatch services, members of the evacuation commission, the duty service sector of the district administration, forces and means of constant readiness of the Kurortny district link of the RSChS took part in the exercises.
According to legend, a call was received from a resident about the collapse of the 2nd entrance of the residential building No. 3 on the street. First of May. Promptly, all participants in the exercises arrived at the scene of the emergency.
In accordance with the emergency response plan, officers of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Kurortny District cordoned off the emergency site, meanwhile the fire and rescue service and the building management company (in the case of the Zhilkomservis Kurortny District LLC exercise) notified the residents of the evacuation. The Evacuation Commission organizes the evacuation of residents. The members of the commission portrayed the residents who were blocked between the floors as a result of the collapse of the overlap: stairs were brought up to the upper floors and the rescuer helped the “victims” to go down to a safe place.According to the head of the department of social protection, there were no disabled people in the house, whose evacuation is more difficult.
Further, the emergency teams of Peterburggaz, CJSC Kurortenergo, LLC Peterburgteploenergo, Vodokanal disconnect the house from the utilities. To ensure unhindered access of equipment to the emergency site, cars parked nearby are evacuated. Having received the floor plans of the house from the Housing Agency, the firefighters proceeded to impromptu extinguishing the fire.
The Emergency Response Commission compiled a list of victims to provide them with material assistance and accommodation in an evacuation center, quickly organized at a school, and in a mobile housing stock. The ambulance team provided the first aid to the wounded.
Emergency services took turns demonstrating emergency actions. Separately, the work of the special equipment of the Ministry of Emergency Situations was demonstrated for lifting debris, cutting metal doors. PES brigade # 4 (Peterburggaz), for example, uses gas supply plans for houses, printed on rubberized material, which will not be damaged in any weather. The Consumer Market Department organized a food point with hot pies and tea for emergency responders and “victims”.
First Deputy Head of Administration of the Kurortny District, Anatoly Poveliy, on the whole, assessed satisfactorily the work of the participants in the exercises and their interaction in liquidation. He emphasized: “The purpose of the exercises is to work out the interaction of all services, so that in a real situation those who will make a decision do not end up in a“ psychological stupor ”, but act according to a worked out scheme. The experience of liquidating emergencies when a building collapsed on the street was taken into service. Olga Forsh and a sharp jump in gas pressure in the 13th quarter of Sestroretsk. The task of one hundred percent proximity to a real emergency and entertainment was not set, as, for example, it was at the celebration of the Day of the Russian Fire Department on Svoboda Square. Participants of the past exercises practiced actions in the event of a collapse, improved their practical skills in the prevention and elimination of emergencies, demonstrated preparedness, efficiency and coordination of actions. “
90,000 NATO exercises are not a provocation, but a response to Moscow’s “policy of intimidation” – InoTV
NATO will begin large-scale military exercises in Norway and the North Atlantic on October 25, Atlantico reports. According to an expert in the field of geopolitics Jean-Sylvester Montgrenier, the purpose of the exercises is to prepare for the defense of European borders from possible aggression from Russia, which is seeking to take “revenge” for the outcome of the Cold War. At the same time, as the specialist notes, the “United Trident” exercise should be viewed not as a provocation, but as a response to the Russian “policy of intimidation.”
NATO will begin large-scale military exercises in the North Atlantic on October 25, Atlantico reports, to simulate military intervention and its reflection by Allied forces.
Geopolitics expert Jean-Sylvester Montgrenier said in an interview with the publication that the scale of the Trident Juncture 2018 exercise will be “unprecedented” since the early 2000s. As the specialist noted, although the upcoming maneuvers are significantly inferior in terms of the number of personnel and equipment to the Russian exercises Vostok-2018 (297 thousand. people) and “West-2017” (70 thousand – 100 thousand people), the level of their training is no less high. The exercises will involve 45 thousand military personnel, 150 aircraft and 60 ships.
“This year the exercises will be held in Norway and the North Atlantic – an oceanic space, control over which will be indispensable for the delivery of military reinforcements from the United States and Canada. Politically and militarily, this is a way to reaffirm the indivisibility of the security system in the transatlantic space, ” explained Mongrenier.
Norway was chosen as the location for the exercises due to its geopolitical and strategic position within NATO. First of all, Norway is a NATO member country and has a common border with Russia, about 200 km long. In addition, it is washed by the seas of the North Sea, a zone whose strategic importance for Russia continues to grow. Finally, Norway is one of the main suppliers of oil and gas to Western Europe, and in the future, also to the central and eastern parts of the continent. “ Thus, the fate of Norway is extremely important for ensuring the energy security of Europe” , the expert concludes, adding that military exercises and the presence of allied forces in the country will create a situation opposite to the scenario of the Norwegian TV series Occupied.
As noted by Moengrenier, countries that are not NATO members, but who “feel threatened by Russia’s ‘geopolitical revisionism’, namely Finland and Sweden, will also join the exercise this year.Finland, in particular, has a 1340 km long border with Russia. In addition, as the specialist reminds, once she already experienced “the aggressiveness and revisionism of Soviet Russia” – The Winter War of 1939-1940 and the Second World War ended for the country with serious territorial and human losses, and the Finns managed to maintain independence only at the cost of “Spilled blood” .
As for Sweden, it is located on the opposite shore of the Baltic Sea from Russia, along the bottom of which the Russian Nord Stream gas pipeline runs, which endangers the Swedish island of Gotland.
“Thus, Sweden and Finland are threatened by the returning to power status of Russia and its revisionist foreign policy goals, fueled by the idea that Moscow must take revenge for the outcome of the Cold War” , concludes Mongrenier.
At the same time, according to the expert, the upcoming exercises should be viewed not as a “provocation” against Russia, but as a response to its “policy of intimidation” , which forces the members of the alliance and their partners to prepare for the protection of the eastern borders of Europe …
As the specialist notes, despite the views of “Kremlin propaganda” stuck in the Middle Ages, politically and militarily “there is no Western world united by hostility towards Muscovy” . In the recent past, some Western powers have repeatedly become allies of Russia – including against other Western powers, from the war with Napoleon to World War II. Only the coming to power of Stalin and the transformation of the USSR into a “superpower” forced the West under the leadership of the United States “to unite for the sake of containing Soviet expansionism” , recalls the interlocutor of the publication.
According to him, after the end of the Cold War, NATO pursued a policy of openness towards the countries of the former Warsaw bloc, including Russia. The inclusion of the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in the 1990s – 2000s was caused, in addition to the decision of the former Soviet satellites to join the organization, by fears of a “geopolitical vacuum” that could lead to national and territorial conflicts, emphasizes Mongrenier. Thus, in his opinion, this process cannot in the strict sense be called “NATO expansion” 90 140
In addition, as the specialist notes, in 2008 France and Germany expressed their protest against the further expansion of NATO and the inclusion of Georgia and Ukraine in it. “Unfortunately, further developments have proved that Paris and Berlin were wrong” , Atlantico says. In his opinion, their refusal, designed to calm and pacify Russia, was perceived by Moscow as “green light” for aggression against these states.
