The Top 5 New York Audition Studios You Should Know

This post is going to cover the top 5 audition studios in New York City.

So if you’re new to town, this should help get you acquainted so you don’t fugheddaboutit when it comes time to audition, capiche?

If you’ve been around you know the ropes already. But there are a couple of pointers that you might not have thought of yet (like, how you can find a bathroom when they all seem full at Ripley Grier, or what you can and can’t get away with in the Actor’s Equity Audition Center.)

Bear in mind, there are studios of all kinds in New York. These happen to be the most heavily used by casting directors and visiting regional theaters to host their auditions.
So let’s jump in…

The Big 5

• Actor’s Equity Building
• Pearl Studios 500
• Pearl Studios 519
• Ripley-Grier Studios
• Telsey & Co.

While it can be annoying to have to go back and forth in one day to many audition centers (and you will if you’re serious about hitting the EPAs and ECCs,) all of the ‘Big 5’ are in a relatively close area in Midtown Manhattan.

Let’s take a closer look at each one:

1. Actor’s Equity Building

Ah, the memories.

I remember coming to the Equity Building as a non-equity performer, sitting in the non-equity “lounge” (a fancy term for what was then, a flat bench in a hallway,) to wait for the chance to get seen.

These days there’s still a separate area for non-equity, but it’s a plush bench (albeit narrow) hallway. Fancy kids, nowadays.

The whole look of the new audition center is clean and modern. There’s a largely wasted area for dancers to warm up (there are rarely dance calls hosted here.) The vast majority of auditions here are for singing and acting, so why they didn’t put some kind of sound proof warm up area here instead is beyond me.

But hey if you need to do a plié before you do your Death of a Salesman monologue, by all means use it.

And there are no phones allowed. But if you have to answer a call, doing it quietly near the window is a good option. But again, there are no phones allowed.

Special things about Actor’s Equity:

• If you’re an Equity member, have your Equity card out for the front desk. If you’re non-Equity, they take photos of you at the front desk (at least when I was non-eq.)
• There’s a new café in the Sky Lobby that is nice, and offers food, and seating.
• Eating in the audition center is not allowed, so if you have food, you’ll need to eat it in the Sky Lobby cafe.
• For non-equity, there’s a narrow seating area before the members area that you can’t go past until the monitors let you.
• There is a men’s and women’s changing room in addition to the bathrooms.
• There’s some good views, since it’s on the 16th floor!

2. Pearl Studios 500

Settle in for the short story of Two Pearls, One City:

Pearl Studios 500 has been around for a while. It was always a popular spot for auditions. Then, a few years ago they opened a new studio across the street, at 519 8th Ave. So, while they’re run by the same company, I think of them as two unique places. When I read an audition notice and it says, “Go to Pearl Studios,” I see which one it’s at and put it in my calendar as either “Pearl 500” or “Pearl 519.”

Okay it was a weird short story, but you got the gist.

Special things about Pearl 500:

• Make sure to have a photo ID, in the last year they started requiring it to get past the front desk.
• The water from the water fountains taste very metallic, so I avoid them. They do sell water, but plan ahead and fill yours at home before you get there to save that money.
• For Pearl 500, also make sure to note which floor your audition is, either the 4th or 12th. But don’t worry, if the audition listing doesn’t say, there will be a list in the elevator that tells you. Just read it right when you get on, because the 4th floor comes quick.
• There are vending machines on the 4th and 12th floors. The 4th floor ones are newer.

3. Pearl Studios 519

Pearl 519, as I said earlier, is the newer sister studio to Pearl 500. Owned by the same company, but across the street. Only difference is that there is only one floor of studios – the 12th. There are a lot more dance calls here, I’ve noticed.

Special things about Pearl 519:

• They don’t check IDs here
• The water fountain here is actually good!
• There are changing rooms for men and women if you follow the hall around to the very back. The men’s changing room especially can be a good place to breathe in for a second before your audition. Well, maybe don’t breathe too deep. Dudes change in there and stuff.
• There are vending machines here.

4. Ripley-Grier 520

Ripley Grier 520 has to be my favorite studio in New York.

It’s just got a cozy feel to it, and it’s got Butch’s Oasis Cafe which has sandwiches, snacks and drinks.

It just feels welcoming.

There are a lot of auditions here, and again you may ask, “Why with the ‘520’?” Well, it’s because there ARE other Ripley Grier locations in the city, but this by far is the most used, and biggest.

(And don’t make me tell you about the time I looked like a complete idiot showing up to the WRONG Ripley Grier.)

They recently added to their 17th floor area, so there are two big floors of studios.

It can get confusing trying to find where your audition is, so look for the screen to the right when you get off the elevators. There will be a scrolling list of where auditions are that day.

They also usually print out signs for the popular auditions of the day by the front desk too, and the front desk staff is always helpful.

I’ve been there a million times and I still couldn’t tell you where 16 P is, so don’t worry. They have maps and signs hanging as well.

Special things about Ripley Grier 520:

• You’ll have to tell the front desk where you’re going. Just say “16” or “Ripley Grier.”
• If you need a warm up room, be prepared with cash. They may require it, though I think I’ve paid with a card before and it was fine.
• Cozy feel
• Butch’s Oasis Cafe is a pretty decent option for breakfast or lunch if you were rushing out the door for your audition or rehearsal.
• If a restroom is full, walk down a hall – there’s probably another one that’s empty.
• If you haven’t warmed up and are singing for an audition, ask for a 15 minute warm up studio. Be warned though, you won’t always get one if it’s a busy day.
• If you have a business, consider getting a flyer and posting it on their wall. There’s lots of actor-traffic here.
• There’s a PAX deli downstairs that has some good eats, and a bodega inside the building to the right when you enter.

5. Telsey & Co.

Telsey is an award-winning organization of casting professionals, according to their website.

And it shows.

They cast a lot of amazing shows/movies/commercials, and they hold a lot of auditions.

I love the design of their waiting and audition rooms, which are modern and comfortable.

But as far as changing clothes when you get there? I’d say try to come audition-ready. There’s only one bathroom for men and one for women, which is fine, but can get crowded if it’s a busy call. And the fact that you’re in such close proximity to the casting director or director when you get there means you might want to look your best beforehand.

Special things about Telsey:

• No need for I.D. But there are two entrances. I usually go to closest one to the A/C/E train.
• Cool design
• Convenient especially to the A/C/E subway
• Remember: They’re a working casting office, and you’re on their ‘turf,’ so always be on your best behavior.
• Smallest of the top five studios
• I know I’m being weird about water fountains, but it’s good at Telsey!

We begin each day with an energizing and educational vocal and physical warm-up with our Broadway Director and Music Director.

Private Lessons, Group Instruction and Advanced Masterclasses: 
A combination of private and group instruction will provide participants with a unique week-long experience. Participants in the Pre-Professional Program will also take a series of advanced masterclasses with visiting Broadway guest artists designed to challenge and elevate our actors’ skill set.

Final Industry Showcase
Our advanced program culminates in a final showcase attended by scouting industry pros. Due to COVID-19, this year’s showcase will look a little different from years past, but will still be amazing! Each performer will have the awesome opportunity to perform their monologue and song cut alone in the room for the scouting talent reps! EDITH FRANK : (40s) Anne’s reserved and nervous mother.  She is soft-spoken and constantly worried about her family’s fate.  She is close with her daughter Margot, and longs for a deeper connection with Anne. Despite her quiet demeanor, she has fortitude and will make her mind known when necessary.

1. PUTTI VAN DAAN: (40s-50s) The head of the Van Daans. An irritable former business partner of Mr. Frank, he is struggling to find his place as second in command. He is intelligent, pragmatic, and harsh. While in the annex, he wants to teach his son to be more outgoing and tough. Mr Van Daan is selfish and openly critical of others, especially Anne.

MRS. PETRONELLA VAN DAAN: (40s-50s) The vain and finicky wife of Mr. Van Daan. She is not ready to give up her lifestyle, and prizes the material things of life. She clings to her fur coat like others cling to their identity. She hides her fear of the unknown by worrying about the trite and frivolous. At the center of much of the conflict in the annex.

MIEP GIES: (30s) A well-liked, kind, and generous secretary from Mr. Frank’s office. She helps to protect the families in hiding, and is their connection to the outside world. Miep keeps them informed and fed, and though worried, she is determined to protect them.  

MR KRALER: (40s) Otto Frank’s business partner.  He helps to hide the members of the annex. He never questions his obligations to help the Franks and do what is right. Dignified, and at a loss for the world around him.

1. JAN DUSSELLl: (50s) Difficult to get along with, he is the only one in the annex without a family.  A dentist by trade, he puts himself first. Skeptical by nature, Mr Dusselli has little patience for his roommate, Anne.

Nazi Officer and Two Dutch Collaborators (male, any age) Although these men do not come into the play until the end of the show, they are exceedingly important roles.

DELLA:  (40s-50s) North Carolinian, born and raised. A religious and socially conservative woman. Warm, pleasant, and caring; she has a maternal instinct despite not having children of her own. An old friend to Jen’s family; married to Tim.She sees herself as open-minded, but has not had the life experience to challenge the world-views with which she was brought up.  A prolific and enthusiastic baker, she has been chosen as a contestant for The Great American Baking Show.

JEN: (Early 30s) Born and raised in North Carolina, but lives in Brooklyn.  Is engaged to Macy. She is an experienced event planner with a compulsive attention to detail.  Considerate, kind, and enthusiastic, she always sees the best in people. Her newfound liberal lifestyle and planning her lesbian wedding brings tension to her conservative hometown.

MACY: (Early 30s) Black, born and raised in New York.  Jen’s fiancé; progressive, sharp, bold, and outspoken. Very confident in her belief system, she challenges those who think differently. Innately curious and inquisitive.  She is who she is, and will not make compromises to coddle people’s feelings.

TIM: (40s+) Della’s husband and a good ol’ boy. He is a plumber with a good work ethic, who takes pride in providing for the household. He finds comfort in his traditional values, and hasn’t had a reason to question his beliefs. He is loving and loved, though perhaps not completely in touch with his emotions.

JIM HARDY: (30s) Handsome, kind, sincere, and good-natured, he is a performer and singer-songwriter who is eager to leave showbiz behind for a simpler life on a farm in Connecticut.  Lyric Baritone.

TED HANOVER: (30s) Jim’’s best friend and performing partner; a charming flirt, he is looking for his big break. Seeking a strong dancer (in the style of Fred Astaire or Gene Kelly) who taps extremely well. Comedic role. Lyric Baritone.

LILA DIXON: (30s) A determined performer and Jim’’s mismatched fiancée.  She isn’t the smartest in town, but what she lacks in intelligence she makes up for with sheer determination and a love for the spotlight.  Seeking a comedic actor and strong dancer who taps. Mezzo Soprano.

LINDA MASON: (30s) A school teacher with the hidden talents of a singer and dancer; lovely, charming, and funny.  She is tough and distant at first, but is ultimately won over by Jim’s kindness, humor, and love of music. Mezzo Soprano with strong belt/mix.  

LOUISE BADGER: (40s-50s) The local “fix-it” woman; tough, no nonsense, and extremely perceptive. Seeking a strong comedic actor with a great Mezzo/Alto belt voice.

DANNY: (30s-50s) The energetic and sarcastic manager for the musical act of Hardy, Hanover, and Dixon. He encourages Ted and Lila to move ahead with a double act while Jim tries to set up a normal life. Danny will stop at nothing to make his clients stars.

In this 5-day on-camera program, campers will have the unique opportunity to work with Award-Winning L.A. Casting Director, Lisa London on on-camera acting and auditioning skills.

To round out our students’ education, campers will also work with other industry professionals throughout the week!

In the very challenging year of 2020, Lisa and her office, London/Stroud Casting, cast 7 films that went into production. These included THE INHERITANCE which filmed in Georgia, BASEMENT which filmed on Long Island, OLD HENRY which filmed in Nashville, CANYON DEL MUERTO which filmed in New Mexico, STATE OF CONSCIOUSNESS, EDDIE AND SUNNY and LOVE ON THE ROCK which filmed overseas in Italy and Malta, respectively. Lisa and her partner, Catherine Stroud cast actors from all over the USA, and even the world for these different movies.

Some of Lisa’s other credits include: Adam Sandler’s Netflix film, SANDY WEXLER; EAT WHEATIES; SWITCHED; FREAKS starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern; BABYSPLITTERS, HANNAH MONTANA, SUPAH NINJAS, SUITE LIFE OF ZACK AND CODY, HOUSE BUNNY and much more! She is the author of the book, FROM START TO STARDOM (The Casting Directors Guide For Aspiring Actors) which takes readers on a step-by-step journey, laying out what it takes for actors to have the best shot at success!

Focus of Lisa’s On-Camera Camp:

Due to COVID-19, we will either be filming our final showcase and sending a video link to loved ones after camp wraps, or we will livestream it. Students will showcase their scenes and the new on-camera skills they learned throughout the week.

Lisa will also use improvisation, an important skill to have both on-set and in auditions. She will run fun exercises that keep actors’ minds sharp, focused and keep the creative juices flowing.

New York Grade Design Studio specializes in luxury private residences. Executives, Thomas Hickey & Edward Yedid, talked to INTERIOR + DESIGN about their recent achievement: the Tribeca loft in a historic building in Manhattan.

“Tribeca – apartments in a loft style with an area of ​​320 sq.meters. They are located at 443 Greenwich Street. The building, built in 1882 by architect Charles Haight, once a factory, has been converted into a luxury condominium. High ceilings, exposed wooden beams, metal structures and arched windows overlook the private courtyard attract a wealthy public.

The client set a task for us: to restore the interior space and develop a complete design project: including wall decoration, selection of furniture and decor, as well as the formation of an art collection. The client brought us to a white box: there were only bare walls, which were to add luxury and personalized details, soften the masculinity, brutality of the industrial space.

How are the apartments arranged? From the elevator you get to a small foyer. In this walk-through space, we tried to present all the lexicon that we used in the project: tinted lacquered oak, patinated bronze, sapele wood, suede panels, the geometry of which is inspired by the works of Piet Mondrian.

From the foyer, the apartment opens onto the kitchen, dining room and living room, which form a public space.The living room is visually divided into two parts. One half of the room is well lit, and here we have placed bright, feminine furniture, dynamic art. In the other, darker part, deep colors and textures are concentrated. It is defined by a custom-made shelving in oak, red silk and bronze metal, by Jean Dubuffet (original!) And light gray Liaigre upholstered furniture.

Through the corridor you find yourself in the private half of the loft, where there are two bedrooms, master and guest, two bathrooms, and a study. As in the foyer, in the master bedroom we have added sapele wood trim and suede panels. A plump sofa and armchairs designed by Franco Albini in fur upholstery add sensuality to the interior.

We prefer calm light colors – they are easy to live with. Cream, beige, gray create a comfortable atmosphere. It is also important that they have stood the test of time so that our palettes are both relevant and timeless. We always start with a neutral base, applying layers of colors and textures to reflect the client’s preferences.At the same time, we direct them in the right direction so that they do not contradict our vision of the interior.

Mondrian’s work inspired us to use red and black, but we also wanted to emphasize the industrial past of the building, so we included bronze, vintage brass, steel in our color and material scheme. The finishes vary from room to room, but the continuity of the decor remains.
