Gym Lessons and Physical Educational Curriculum
Physical education is a course, or class, that is taken to incorporate movement learning in a play or movement exploration setting. More recently than ever, trends have developed to increase the number of activities that are in the physical education curriculum. This article discusses what is involved in creating a physical education curriculum for students in middle school. It also discusses how to develop your own lesson plans and how to incorporate or make adjustments to pre-made physical education lesson plans.
Curriculum
A number of activities are incorporated into the physical education curriculum when dealing with middle school students. These are the type of activities that are fun and can be challenging for some students. Some of the lesson plans include activities in basketball, field games, dance and rhythm, Frisbee and fun and fitness circles. Some additional activities include hockey, golf, jump rope, soccer, track and field, softball and volleyball. When dealing with children at the middle school age, it is important to realize that they do not have the same level of endurance as students would if they were older.
Lesson Plans
When developing your own physical education lesson plan for your middle school students, you have to first take into account their endurance level. They are not going to be able to stay active at a high level for the entire class period, so you will need to break up the activity so that they have frequent water breaks. Also, take into account whether the activity and lesson plans are being done before school, during class or after school as intramural activities. If the lesson plan is begin done outside of class, you can incorporate more time into the learning process.
Another thing that needs to be considered when making a lesson plan for your middle school students is the incorporation of group activities. You want them to be able to participate in physical fitness activities while interacting with the other students. The learning process is a collective task. The lesson plan may need some adjusting according to each student’s abilities.
Ready-Made Lesson Plans
Ready-made, or pre-made, physical education lesson plans are available online. There are many websites that offer free lesson plans for a variety of activities for your middle school students. You can also obtain lesson plans from websites that charge a fee. Usually, this fee is either per physical education lesson plan or per month.
When deciding on whether to obtain a physical education lesson plan that is already made in comparison to making your own lesson plan, there are some things that need to be reviewed. You need to make sure that the lesson plans entail all objectives that you wish for the students to come out of the class learning. If you need to make adjustments, you can add or subtract from the activities and lessons that come with the lesson plan that you obtained online. Free lesson plans are ideal in place of lesson plans for a price unless you are familiar with the particular seller.

About the Author
Robert J. Doan, PhD, is an assistant professor of physical education in the University of Southern Mississippi’s School of Kinesiology. Previously, he taught physical education in elementary school. Dr. Doan serves as a board member for the Mississippi Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance, a SHAPE America state affiliate organization. He also serves as a physical education teacher education program reviewer for SHAPE America and as an article reviewer for two of SHAPE America’s professional journals: Strategies and Journal of Physical Education, Recreation & Dance. Dr. Doan has conducted research on a variety of physical education topics and has presented at multiple conferences at the state, regional, and national levels. Dr. Doan earned his undergraduate degree from Grand Valley State University, attended Winthrop University for his master’s degree, and completed his PhD in physical education with emphasis in curriculum and assessment at the University of South Carolina.
Lynn Couturier MacDonald, DPE, is a professor in and chair of the physical education department at State University of New York at Cortland and is a former president of the National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE). Socially Distanced PE Lesson Ideas and Virtual PE Lesson Ideas
What’s up Teacher Fam!
This has hands down been the most hectic start to any school year I can ever remember.
There are so many unknowns, daily changes and tons of questions – I honestly feel like a first year teacher most days, just trying to keep all the balls in the air and my head above water.
As I’m writing this, I’m starting my 3rd week of teaching a Hybrid schedule (1/2 virtual 1/2 face to face).
Below is a brainstorm of ideas that I will update as I come across helpful resources and also get into teaching more this year.
Everyone is in a different situation, so I’ve tried to divide this page up into 3 sections (Virtual, No Equipment Allowed and Equipment Allowed with Social Distancing) hope it’s helpful!
Come to Terms With Things Not Being Ideal
Before we start, I think it’s important to realize that this is a Pandemic, you won’t be able to do the things you used to do. And I’ve had to tell myself that over and over again this year, I can’t plan the entire year out like I normally would, instead I have to be OK with just staying a few days ahead (and that’s REALLY hard for me).
I won’t be able to do many of the elaborate games and activities that I normally would that require a ton of equipment and also force kids to come into close contact with each other all the time – that kills me, because it’s my favorite thing to do and those lessons are the ones the kids enjoy the most, but I just have to come to terms with that this year and give myself some grace in order to be realistic given the circumstances.
My Specific Situation
Just so you know my specific situation, we are doing a hybrid schedule of half face to face and half virtual – so I will be rotating between face to face classes and virtual classes to start the year off. Students have 2 face to face days at school and then 3 virtual days from home, so if I see them face to face this week, I will teach them virtually while they are at home the following week. My days are a mix of virtual and hybrid back and forth which makes it hard to get into a flow, but I’m starting to get used to it… so we’ll probably have a schedule change again soon ? (the ultimate goal of the district is to get back to 5 days a week, but of course this is controversial and everyone has a different opinion, so who knows what will happen…)
Currently our guidelines for equipment is we are allowed to share equipment within a class, but have to sanitize hands before and after and must sanitize all equipment after each class.
We are currently having kids place all equipment on a cart at the end of each lesson and then spraying it down with a disinfectant solution called “Vindicator” either in between classes if we don’t have enough equipment, or at the end of the day if we have enough equipment to go around for the classes that day.

Teaching With a Mask
Wearing a mask is necessary right now, but let’s not pretend that anyone loves it, it’s hot, makes it harder to breathe and also makes it harder for kids to hear you.
I did get these face shields (as you see in the video above), which are way easier to teach in, but our district policy is I can’t be within 6 ft of students when wearing one without a mask… so that makes it harder to wear them bc duty calls for me to be near kids all the time (especially the little ones)
I bought a bunch of these Gaiter Masks bc I like the convenience of pulling it down around my neck and never forgetting my mask when I walk out of my office or gym – my favorite sets are these dri-fit material sets, I have 2: This Camo Set and This Variety Pack
I also bought these “Mask Savers” that fit inside of your mask and helps to keep the mask from always getting in your mouth while you’re talking, I also feel like it helps me communicate better and allows kids to hear me more clearly when wearing a mask. I got the large, but wish I had gone with XL bc my nose is gigantic and they are little small for me.
I am so thankful I already had my Wireless Mic setup because it’s a HUGE help this year and allows kids to hear me without yelling across the gym all the time (which you have to do even louder with a mask on)
Virtual PE Lesson Ideas
This one is hands down the hardest teaching format for me, PE wasn’t meant to be taught on a screen and there’s a very limiting factor of not having equipment at home… or not being allowed to use equipment at school.

- Have kids follow along to the commands and attempt to not make any mistakes – I’ve been doing 1-2 levels each week and having the kids count their mistakes and attempt to break their own personal record

- A fun idea that works well in a virtual environment, the concept can also be modified for almost any activity or content

- Teach different exercises and show students how to do circuit training based on their goals

- Virtual Scavenger Hunt
- There are tons of ways to do this and lots of variations online (search “Virtual scavenger hunt” on youtube and you’ll find 100s of videos), it could be a fun way to get kids moving and allow them to show off the items they find in their house as well
- You can practice different locomotor movements while finding the items and also talk about moving in different pathways while trying to find different items in your house (either point to them and come back, or actually find them and bring them back)
- You could do a slideshow if you want to have a self paced class, or just have the kids follow along to a video and pause it whenever you want to have a discussion

No Equipment PE Lesson Ideas
First of all, all the ideas above in the “virtual section” can be done in person as well with no equipment required (or at least using home made equipment for each student).
You could also use almost all of the virtual ideas if you have to teach in a classroom environment, which I know many people are doing right now.
Also a few more below:
- Do a “Social Distanced Olympics”
- Rock Paper Scissors Battles
- There are 1,000,000 variations of these, google it or spend 5 minutes researching on twitter to find a good variation that you like, but it normally goes like this: Play against a friend, winner does one thing, loser does another thing, repeat until your so tired you can barely breathe
- Check out the Crazy Cards Challenge
- This is a fun icebreaker that only requires you to print the cards ( you’ll need to modify a few things like, fist bumps and high fives should be “air fives and air bumps” to avoid contact )
- Shadow Tag
- To be honest, I’ve never tried this, but the general idea is you step on someone’s shadow in order to tag them… I guess it would be honors system ?
- OPEN Phys Ed: PE Now
- I’ve only skimmed these resources from OPEN, but have heard great feedback from other teachers so check them out and see if they’d be a good fit for you
Social distancing guidelines and what PE will look like is going to be different from school to school, district to district and state to state, but below are a few ideas to get you started.
Take it day by day until you find out more specifically what the situation will look like at your school and be ready to respond to whatever situation arises and do what’s best for kids.
Equipment Allowed, but Socially Distanced Activities
Luckily, this is where I’m at at our school. We can use equipment within a class, but have to sanitize in between and also wash hands or sanitize before and after. We also have to have masks on when in the gym at all times unless we are taking a mask break or water break. The kids can be near each other as long as we have masks on, but in general we try to stay spread out and give each other space during the lessons.
The kids are allowed to take a water bottle break or mask break whenever they need them, I just marked tape spots on the wall every 7 feet and they head over and take a break as needed after making sure there is nobody within 6 ft of them.
My plan is to have a cart (as I illustrated in the orientation video at the beginning of this post) and 2 sets of equipment so that I can sanitize after class and use the 2nd set of equipment for my next class while the other set dries off.
- Adventure Bingo
- This is what we played for our First Week of PE Face to Face this year, we masked up and gave each other space while still learning to introduce ourselves and finding out new things about our classmates, it was great!
- Basketball
- You can make rules to put social distancing in place, or if you don’t want to get into a team game just teach a ball handling unit and focus on individual skills
- Hula Hooping
- This is a classic skill and it’s naturally socially distant – also hoops are easy to spray down after class
- Soccer:
- Teach a soccer unit and modify the rules to have everyone spaced out during gameplay and practice tasks
- Jump Rope Unit
- This is great because you can modify to be more individual focus and allow social distancing very easily and ropes can be easily sprayed down between classes
- Gymnastics Unit
- The only hard part about this one is wiping down the mats between each class… but if you could have kids help you or get them doing a follow along video while you wipe down the mats it could work well.
- I’ve also considered, just doing it without the mats and leaving out anything that would be dangerous or painful without a mat
- Paddle Skills or Tennis Unit
- Focus on individual skills and then stay on opposite sides of a line or net when moving into partner skills
- Only thing I’m worried about with this one is I don’t want to spray my foam balls with disinfectant, so I might have 4-5 kids per court and have them share a ball to have enough to “quarantine” my foam balls for a couple days … or use another ball that could be sprayed down like a racket ball.
- Frisbee Unit
- If you have some good outdoor space, teaching frisbee and playing some fun frisbee activities could be a great way to go right now, check out the link above for some ideas.

20 Tools for Effective Online Physical Education
Online physical education may seem like an odd concept for some parents and even educators! How does online physical education work? The truth is online physical education has found its way into many virtual schools around the world, even before the beginning of the recent pandemic! Interestingly enough, in combination with reliable technology, PE Coaches have found innovative ways to get kids moving over the years! In fact, a Health and Physical Education teacher at EdOptions Academy Virtual School talks about how physical education works in his virtual gym. One thing he mentions is essential for effective online Physical Education is allowing students to explore, attempt, and discover new forms of movement that they enjoy, as well as establishing physical activity as a positive experience. Just Dance – Have your students follow the moves on this YouTube-based dance challenge! Dancing is an age-old way to get people movin’. Before they know it, they’ll be getting the best cardio workout. Also, they will be able to enjoy some of their favorite musical artists!
Cosmic Kids Yoga – Here, you will find 10-20 minute guided yoga workouts for preschool to elementary school-aged kids. Kids will love bending and stretching in outer space, underwater, on the farm, and more!
The Body Coach – Try these FREE easy-to-follow, at-home workouts for everyone, including kids. These engaging 5-8 minute videos get you fit no matter your fitness level. Hosted by Joe Wicks revealed to his followers that he would be starting online PE lessons during the school closures! The videos will start on Monday and run through till Friday on his YouTube channel. “It’s called PE with Joe. It’s a workout specifically designed for kids because when the schools are closed, there is no PE.”
The Kids Coach – Fitness, workouts, and wellness all just for kids. This site allows you to choose an age category and gets your students’ movin’! Find over 100 sessions categorized by age group.
Coach Josh Kids Fitness – This fun workout allows preschoolers to practice balance and coordination while also practicing everything from colors to numbers to the ABC’s in Coach Josh’s fun workout show! (Also streaming now on Amazon Prime Video).
Moovlee – What a fun way to get moving! Moovlee is an animated monkey that leads 4-10 minutes of workout videos for kids ages 3-5. He focuses his workouts on meditation, yoga, and cardio. Get busy with this little monkey!
Kids’ HIIT Workout – Get moving along with your kids! HIIT, or high-intensity interval training, is a workout that combines intense bursts of exercise and short active recovery periods. You’ll see things such as; marching, jumping jacks, and squats. No equipment, just energy, and your workout shoes. Let’s do it!
Kidz Bop Dance Along – This site invites you to dance to the beat of rated-G versions of popular songs like Thank U, Next, Señorita, and Old Town Road.
BBC Teach Supermovers – Supermovers has loads of videos that combine education with exercise. They help older children develop confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. A great way to continue your child’s learning while also having a PE lesson! There are options for KS1 and KS2 with easy to follow activities covering topics such as number bonds, times tables and division for Maths, and grammar, spelling and punctuation for English. They also have some Science and Language exercise videos and a Supermovers Champions section.
Applications (APPs):
- Nike Training Club App – Expert Nike trainers designed this app featuring free 15-, 30-, and 45-minute workouts. It will be an excellent fit for the sport-playing middle or high schooler looking to keep themselves in shape at home.
- Sworkit Kids App – The Sworkit Kids app makes it easy to create and tailor workouts that fit your kid’s age, ability, and fitness level. Guided by the app through interval-style workouts, Kids can count on building strength and agility. It mixes targeted exercises with fun challenges, making exercise feel more like a challenging game!
- I Am Love: Kids’ Yogaverse – Your students can gain flexibility and strength by striking each of the thirteen yoga poses and breathing techniques featured in this yoga-focused app. It also sets the mood with soothing music.
- Dance with Debbie Allen – Actress and dancer Debbie Allen will be offering free classes on Instagram Live throughout the COVID-19 crisis! Follow her on Instagram @therealdebbieallen to find out when the next live video will be available!
- Go Noodle Kids – Go Noodle is used by teachers everywhere to get their kids exercising. Interactive videos combine movement with mindfulness, helping kids center themselves for learning. With its sort of modules, GoNoodle is ideal for kids that need a quick energy boost through exercise.

10 Virtual PE Lessons Your Kids Will Love While School’s Out
As I write this article, the sun is shining, my children are bouncing on the trampoline in the garden and the birds are tweeting happily in the trees. I daydream off for a moment enjoying the peace at a soul level… but then my kids start kicking off, I jolt back to reality and remember we are in a national lockdown. Today we can enjoy the garden, but having checked the weather report for next week, I thought I had better research some online activity options.
Luckily, there are loads out there, so I have compiled some of the UK’s best offerings in the video below that can all be used as virtual PE lessons. You may even want to join in and shake that booty yourself.
1. PE with Joe
Lovely London based Joe Wicks (aka The Body Coach) is live on YouTube every morning at 9am from Monday to Friday. He is offering a daily 30 minute PE lesson until the schools reopen, with the goal of being the nation’s PE teacher. So far he has had millions of families joining him. We too have joined him every morning since Monday, although I have had to reign it in a bit, as after two days my calves felt like they had been trodden on by an elephant… My husband is very enthusiastic about this one and my eldest daughter thinks it’s a cool way to start her day. Thank you Joe for giving up time every morning to help support our kids!

2. Cosmic Kids Yoga
Join Jamie on YouTube to offer your kids a chance to learn yoga and mindfulness within an adventure story or guided relaxation. Some of their most popular videos such as Frozen, Moana and Trolls have had millions of views and with hundreds of videos to choose from, hopefully, there is something for everyone. Cosmic Kids Yoga is used in schools all over the UK and videos range from short stories for nursery-aged children, to full length 30 minute adventures for older kids. My children really love this one, their favourite is Princess Poppy in the Trolls Adventure.
3. Just Dance
I only realised this week that Just Dance is available on YouTube for free. We have a Nintendo Switch but my seven year old knows how to use it better than me and we don’t currently have the unlimited version. On their YouTube channel, you can access many of the unlimited videos without having to pay for them. You obviously can’t win stars because you don’t hold the controllers, but in all honesty, this is better for us because my kids have a meltdown if I beat them! My favourite video ‘Waka Waka this time for Africa’ has had over 10 million views. A great PE session for the whole family.
4. Andy’s Wild Workouts
For all you CBeebies fans, Andy Day has a series on YouTube for younger children called Andy’s Wild Workouts. Each video follows a different theme such as a beach or rainforest adventure. Videos are informative and educational, as well as active and only last about six minutes, so good for a quick burst. This series is also available on BBC iPlayer.
5. BBC Teach Supermovers
Supermovers is a great resource recommended by schools and has loads of videos that combine education with exercise. There are options for KS1 and KS2 with easy to follow activities covering topics such as number bonds, times tables and division for Maths, and grammar, spelling and punctuation for English. They also have some Science and Language exercise videos and a Supermovers Champions section to help older children develop confidence, teamwork and leadership skills. A great way to continue your child’s learning while also having a PE lesson.
6. iMoves
Another resource used in classrooms and recommended by schools is iMoves.com. Their content is made by teachers and they have over 1,200 lessons to choose from. They are offering a 14-day free trial at the moment and have also created a free section called The iMovement. This section is updated daily with new activities for both KS1 and KS2 children, it includes free Quick Blast videos such as Samba and Disco, and a Mental Health and Wellbeing section with guided meditations, pilates and a worry monster activity. They also have a nice activity timetable you can print off for your child to complete.
7. GoNoodle
GoNoodle is another resource recommended by schools and used in classrooms. They claim they help 14 million kids every month with movement and mindfulness videos that are created by child development experts. They have 19 different channels, including exercise channels such as Zumba Kids, Net Generation and Koo Koo Kangeroo. The videos are really fun and vibrant and a great way to hold kids attention whilst being active. If you don’t want to sign up, check out their YouTube channel where you can access lots of their videos. They have also created a free game-based app, available on the App Store.
8. Zumba Kids
Zumba has been sweeping the nation for years and now there are loads of online Zumba Kids videos for children to follow along at home. GoNoodle has a whole section for Zumba Kids with 20 videos to choose from, the videos are fun to watch, energetic and lots of them are hosted by children. You do need to sign-in to GoNoodle to access these free videos, while there is also a really good Zumba Kids playlist on YouTube that you can stick on your TV and let the kids follow along.
9. Koo Koo Kangeroo
Koo Koo Kangeroo are an American comedic dance-pop duo called Bryan and Neil. They have created a range of kids fitness videos that are really fun and silly. Their Dinosaur Stomp video has had over 18 million views on YouTube which is pretty impressive. It’s another fun, active way to get your kids off the sofa and burning some energy. GoNoodle hosts their channel, so if you have an account you can easily see all their videos.
10. Les Mills Born to Move
Les Mills is a fitness program used in gyms all over the UK including Anytime Fitness and David Lloyd. Gyms are all closed at the moment, but they have a fantastic range online for both adults and children and are offering a 14-day free trial. The Born to Move section (click ‘Try at Home’ link) has nearly 100 videos aimed at different age groups, from 4-5 years up to 13-16 years. My personal favourite is the Move like the Avengers video, I think this is awesome and my children loved it. Lots of their videos are also available free on their YouTube channel.
