Paul Rabil’s upstart Premier Lacrosse League merges with Major League Lacrosse
Imagine if LeBron James left the NBA to start his own rival basketball league, and then, two years later, the leagues merged and moved forward under the name of LeBron’s league.
That’s what just happened in the niche world of professional outdoor lacrosse.
In 2018, Paul Rabil, the biggest star in Major League Lacrosse (which began in 2001), left MLL to launch Premier Lacrosse League with his brother Mike Rabil (who did not play professionally).
On Wednesday, MLL and PLL announced the leagues have merged, and will move forward under the PLL name. The leagues are not sharing financial terms of the deal.
Rabil left MLL because he felt the league was “broken.” (MLL Commissioner Sandy Brown told Yahoo Finance at the time that Rabil, then the league’s all-time scoring leader, “didn’t want to be part of an org chart.”) Now it’s hard not to view the merger as Rabil winning.
“I think it’s lacrosse winning,” Rabil told Yahoo Finance in a phone interview on Wednesday. “There has been some temporary disruption over the last couple of years, and I think good, healthy competition is what a lot of industries require to hit their sweet spot. My hope was always that a merger would come at some point. For us, being the new league in the room, we had a lot to accomplish and prove, and that wasn’t easy, but our year-over-year growth and sponsorships helped. And I think when you think about the public conversation about professional lacrosse, it has certainly grown since 2018.”

Indeed, PLL since its launch has scored financial backing from household names like Raine Group, Chernin Group, and CAA, as well as individual investment from Alibaba executive Joe Tsai, who owns the Brooklyn Nets, New York Liberty, and indoor lacrosse team San Diego Seals, and played lacrosse at Yale. The league has a broadcast deal with NBC, which Rabil has said was crucial to its growth. PLL also signed sponsors like Ticketmaster, Capital One, Gatorade, and Adidas.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, PLL returned in July for 16-day, 20-game, quarantined tournament played in Utah. Games were shown on NBC, NBC Sports Network, and the NBC Sports Gold streaming platform. Ratings for the tournament, though tiny compared to other major pro leagues (153,000 viewers per game, on average), were up 27% from the 2019 season, a success story despite the pandemic.

“We were lucky to get this deal done to wrap up a tumultuous 2020,” Rabil says. He compares the merger to the unions of the NFL and AFL (1966) and NBA and ABA (1976).
As part of the merger, the Boston Cannons will join the PLL as the league’s eighth team, and the remaining MLL franchises will be eligible for future PLL expansion. The Cannons will become the Cannons Lacrosse Club to fit with the PLL’s tour-based model, in which teams are not city-specific.
But Rabil does say the league could eventually assign teams to cities, and could launch a franchising model (PLL teams are currently owned by the league, and players can get stock options).
“We’re poised and positioned to transition, if it makes sense in the future, to a model similar to MLS,” Rabil says. “They call their ownership groups ‘operators,’ and I think that’s unique.”
PLL will announce the schedule for its 2021 season in January. “PLL will enter its third season, but with 20 years of MLL history bolted on,” says Rabil. “We’re pretty excited about that.”

When you decided to start your own league, where did that idea come from? What was the origin story?
Paul Rabil: I believe any entrepreneur can identify with either realizing a problem or feeling passionate about solving for something.
You’re always going to hit a crossroads where there’s no one toe in the water first. You’re either going all in or moving onto another project.
For us, our vision has always been around how we see so much potential in professional lacrosse and what [this league] can do to the entire industry, which has been growing over the last 15 years. We think we’re going to be recognized by the IOC [as an official Olympic sport] in the coming year but we haven’t been able to solve it professionally. If you look at other pro sports leagues, what unlocks potential around the commercial viability of its players. If that visibility brings in new participants and new eyeballs, you unlock distribution.
Something interesting that PLL is doing is going with a tour-based model like the Big 3 or WWE, rather than having teams fixed in various cities. How did you decide to do it that way?
Rabil: We’re going to be the first major team sports league that does a tour based in the U.S. The WWE, NASCAR, UFC. World Surf League, PBR, the Dew Tour, Street League Skateboarding—these are all major sports businesses. The PGA Tour brings all the best players in the world into one market at a time. That’s always been really attractive to me as a sports consumer and to my brother as my co-founder on this business. He’s the CEO of POL. There’s something attractive when you look at the traditional structure of a team sports league, it’s city-based.
Our narrative is two-fold. For one, lacrosse is growing. But if you’re a niche sport, you’re typically in fewer than ten markets—MLL is in nine. What we believe is that regionality is creating more distance from other established and emerging markets all over the country. If we go tour-based, you are bringing the best product and the best players in the world to all of the emerging and established areas in the U.S. That’s important.
The second thing has to do with understanding the resources at your disposal.
If you look at the NFL, the NBA, the MLB, the NHL, these are in 25, 30-plus markets. They really have ubiquity across the U.S. and they’re city-based, and their ownership groups either own the arena or own the stadium. They own the venue, which gives them ancillary revenue streams from parking to concessions. They get to book their schedules. When you talk about major team sports leagues, it’s about the best players, the highest competition and your media strategy. How are you being distributed?

We’ve all been there: running around as a kid, pretending to play for our favorite professional sports team, swishing that buzzer beating three-pointer or hitting that walk-off home run. It’s a timeless childhood dream that’s been shared by many, but accomplished by few.
Nick Ossello, though, is one of the lucky ones who have reached for the stars and actually touched them. And with a combination of skill, determination and persistence, what was once an innocent childhood aspiration has now morphed into arguably one of the best ways to spend your weekends.
Ossello grew just up a short drive from Denver and had always envisioned himself on a Major League Lacrosse field, watching guys like former Denver Outlaws midfielder Brian Langtry put on a show for crowds at what was once Invesco Field at Mile High. Ossello showed admiration for the Broncos on Sundays as well, but while the football scene in Denver was never an issue, lacrosse was a different story.
“Denver isn’t traditionally thought of as a hotbed lacrosse area,” Ossello said. “Usually, that’s you know, Baltimore, New York, Philly area.”
As Ossello points out, though, seeing the now-13th most popular high school sport take hold gave it some sprouting seeds in the Mile High City.
“I think it was really important for a team like the Outlaws to kind of have their reach in Denver,” Ossello said.
“It gave a lot of guys like me, who were playing youth lacrosse, playing high school, kind of a good sense that not only professional, but even Division 1 lacrosse was very attainable, because we were able to go to Mile High and see that professional lacrosse was a very good and prevalent sport in the Denver area.”
At Wheat Ridge High School, less than 20 minutes from where he now suits up for the Outlaws, Ossello was a three-time all-conference player who earned state accolades his junior and senior years, while being named captain his junior year. He ended up taking his talents to the Division 1 level, but as it turned out, so did others.
“Right as I started entering Wheat Ridge, Colorado kind of started producing a decent amount of Division 1 players. I think my freshman year, there was a kid [named] Patrick Murray that committed from Kent Denver to Georgetown, and that was, like, one of the first times I was reading in the newspaper about Colorado kids committing, and then it kind of seemed to grow from there.”
Murray’s rise to the college game certainly helped Ossello eye a growth for lacrosse in Denver, but what really did it in were the team competitions back east.
“I started realizing that Denver could be pretty good on the map when we could go out east for team tournaments and start placing pretty well,” Ossello said. “We would be playing against teams that had, you know, a bunch of ACC commits, and if you looked at their roster, it’d be pretty intimidating, but we were able to hold our own.”
Ossello also starred on Wheat Ridge’s football team, winning a state title that was played at – you guessed it – Invesco Field at Mile High. His senior year, he was voted team MVP and served as team captain.
He also appeared on the football and lacrosse fields in four and a half years at Notre Dame, winning an ACC lacrosse title in 2014 and getting drafted by the Outlaws 60th overall in 2015. However, following a loss to the University of Denver in the 2015 NCAA semifinal in Philadelphia, Ossello wasn’t quite ready to call it quits in South Bend.
“After we lost to Denver in lacrosse, I really wasn’t ready to leave Notre Dame, but then after that year of football, I kind of had to accomplish everything I had set out to accomplish when I was a kid and when I committed to Notre Dame.”
The Fighting Irish football team went 10-3 in 2015, his last year with the team, with the Wheat Ridge native seeing time in Notre Dame’s 44-28 Fiesta Bowl loss to Ohio State on New Year’s Day. To this day, Ossello maintains a great level of pride and respect for alma mater and all those associated with it, particularly both his head coaches.
“I think they did a great job of making that not just an incredible athletic experience, but making it a great well-rounded experience,” Ossello said. “So I was really able to value my education and my friends and everything like that, and I think they really made it the best college experience possible.”
When South Bend was all said and done, Ossello was picked up by the Chesapeake Bayhawks at No. 2 overall in the 2016 MLL Supplemental Draft. He was traded to the Outlaws after a brief stint in Annapolis, and what was once an innocent childhood fantasy now became an actuality.
“I was ecstatic,” Ossello said. “I got drafted by the Bayhawks, and I’ll always be thankful to them for a great introduction to the league; coach Reese does a good job, and I wish them the best of luck, but that wasn’t necessarily the team I grew up watching.”
That brings us to today, where Ossello now suits up in orange and black for the team he’s surrounded himself with since childhood. But even when life seems grand, not all that glitters is gold.
“It’s much different than high school and college for sure because the league’s not big enough to where the paychecks are a good yearly salary, so a lot of guys have their Monday through Friday jobs,” for which Ossello’s is on the sales side at a supply chain solution company called Innovatix.
In addition, this isn’t the Broncos or Nuggets or Avalanche where you have mandated practices, team meetings and all that jazz; in Major League Lacrosse, you get out what you put in.
“You’re not practicing every day, you’re not in the locker room every day, so a lot of it’s kind of up to you,” Ossello said. “They’ll send out a scouting report, they’ll send out film, and then it’s kind of up to you to make sure you’re staying in shape and lifting and working out and everything.”
Realizing this new way of life has paid off for Ossello, who scored two goals in front of 6,973 fans in a 2016 win over the New York Lizards on June 24. Not bad for your first game with your favorite team.
“I was really pumped,” Ossello said. “The first goal, I’m not going to lie, it wasn’t the best shot, and it was kind of what we call a ‘garbage goal’ — bounced off a defender’s stick and didn’t look great — so again, I didn’t really do a great job of putting everything in perspective. I was kind of mad that I even had a bad shot.”
His second goal that day was much nicer, but what made it even more special was scoring on someone he’s always admired, and for Ossello, that someone was MLL veteran and former collegiate national champion Paul Rabil.
“I even remember me and my buddies, when we were in high school, trying to watch his YouTube highlights and then go out in the backyard and replicate them,” Ossello said. “So that was a really awesome moment, something that I’ll cherish forever, to be able to dodge on a guy like that and hit a goal, that was really cool.”
But it wasn’t until post-game autographs that day that Ossello felt everything had finally come together, that an adamant youthful lust for a professional career with the Outlaws had now been satisfied.
“It kind of hit me that everything has come to fruition and all that hard work I put in as a kid paid off with this first game,” Ossello said. “I was fortunate enough to have a couple goals, so that really meant a lot to me.”
Now that his dream is a reality, Ossello hopes he can be the next one to inspire the next generation of lacrosse players, just as Rabil and Langtry did for him.
“It’s funny because I’m now playing, and I look up in the stands and see all these youth kids and I’m like, ‘Well, it seems like just yesterday I was one of these kids that was bringing their stick to the game, getting all pumped up to go watch my favorite players,’ so hopefully I can use it as a tool to hopefully inspire the next generation of lacrosse players from Denver.”
For the time being, though, Denver’s newest Outlaw is just happy to be where he’s always imagined.
“I’m really enjoying life right now; it’s going pretty well. I think I got a good job, good stable job, and then this Outlaws thing is really a great opportunity, so life could certainly be a lot worse.”
During that first game, a woman held up a sign dedicated to Ossello, with a message that is surely felt throughout the Outlaws community and in the locker room. The message?
“Welcome home, Nick.”

From Lexington to LaxCon: Kentucky Family Surprises Teen with Philly Trip

As the son of a U.S. Army major, Michael Alaniz of Lexington, Ky., has traveled all over the world — 25 countries and counting. But it was a surprise trip to Philadelphia in January that gave him the thrill of a lifetime.
Alaniz, a junior attackman at Tates Creek High School, was diagnosed in December with a spinal disorder that threatened to end his playing days. A specialist provided the diagnosis after Alaniz returned from lacrosse camp at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University with excruciating pain.
“When he came home and I hugged him at the airport, he screamed,” said Patricia Alaniz, Michael’s mother.
X-rays showed not only that Michael had sustained multiple stress fractures in his back, but also that he had spondylolsthesis, a condition that affects the lower vertebrae. Growing 9 inches in one year and playing on three different teams had only added to the strain on his spine.
He might never play lacrosse again, his doctor said.
Looking to lift his son’s spirits, Marcos Alaniz, who retired from the U.S. Army in 2015 after 23 years as a field artillery major, suggested he send a letter to his idol, Paul Rabil.
Rabil responded with an autographed Team USA poster and the note, “Get well soon, Michael.”
What none of them expected was the chance to say thank you in person.
On Christmas morning, the Alanizes surprised Michael and his younger brother, Alex, with tickets to the US Lacrosse Convention.
“I was super stoked,” Michael Alaniz said. “I’d been watching the buildup, all the people that were going to be there.”
“We’re looking forward to [LaxCon] being something we do every year as a family trip together.”
Lexington isn’t a lacrosse hotbed. The Alaniz boys travel more than 75 miles each way to train in Louisville. There, they’ll meet families from as far away as Indiana looking for the same opportunity.
“People just desperate for places to play,” Marcos Alaniz said.
By comparison, a two-hour flight to Philadelphia seemed entirely reasonable.
Though Fan Fest did not start until Saturday, Jan. 12, the family arrived two days early. They found Lauren Rossi, manager of special events at US Lacrosse, who along with Rabil Companies chief of staff Andrew Manning arranged for a private meeting with No. 99 himself.
The conversation took a surprising turn when Manning introduced Michael’s parents to Rabil’s parents, Allan and Jean Anne. Their sons shared more than just a passion for lacrosse. They both also have learning disabilities.
Rabil grew up with auditory processing disorder, ADHD and word retrieval difficulty. In 2012, he started a foundation that provides sports programming and scholarships to children with learning differences.
Until now, Marcos Alaniz said, his son, who has a 3.7 GPA and wants to study aerospace engineering in college, has tried to hide his learning disabilities.
Michael has ADHD, visual tracking and short-term memory problems. “It opened up another door I didn’t know existed,” Marcos Alaniz said.
It’s yet another reason to love LaxCon. Beyond the glitz of the expo hall and the allure of learning from the sport’s brightest minds, the event, despite significant growth over the years to include more than 7,000 attendees annually, has retained its romantic appeal.
“We were just expecting to buy some merchandise and let the boys see the exciting gear,” Marcos Alaniz said. “We could not have expected this.”
The Alaniz family plans to return to Philadelphia for the convention next year. Marcos, a former soccer player, has enrolled in the US Lacrosse Coach Development Program. Michael, meanwhile, was able to return to playing after three weeks of physical therapy. His official diagnosis was Grade 1 spondylolsthesis, the least severe and most manageable form of the spinal condition.
“Now we’re looking forward to [LaxCon] being something we do every year as a family trip together,” Marcos Alaniz said.
Total attendees, up 3.5 percent from last year. A large portion (39 percent) were first-time convention goers.

It takes fearless independence to carve out a career that incorporates all facets of your personality skills, creating a “job” no one’s likely done before. Case-in-point? Paul Rabil is a lacrosse player with the New York Lizards who also works as an investor, podcast host, and global ambassador for New Balance, among other things.
