The Best Lacrosse Camp I Ever Attended
Editor’s note: Please join me in welcoming Paul Rabil to LaxAllStars. com! Paul, a passionate lacrosse enthusiast who needs no introduction from us, recently launched PaulRabilExperience.com (“PRE” for short) to offer young aspiring players a direct connection to the advice and inspiration that’s made him the player he is today. Over the next few weeks, Paul will be sharing stories from his journey to professional lacrosse stardom. We hope you enjoy!
[mks_separator style=”solid” height=”2″]
We’re living amidst the proliferation of youth sports. I can talk about it every which way. However, instead of focusing on why, how or who started the dialogue and event takeover in lacrosse specifically, I want to share with you a familiar story of mine – a lacrosse camp I’ll never forget.
It was called the Gettysburg Shooting Camp. I was 14 years old, and on the fringe of becoming a high school freshman, playing basketball, soccer and lacrosse (in order of favorites).
My dad was, and still is, the hardest worker I know. He’s loyal, passionate, humble and always striving for improvement.
He was very selective over the camps he spent money on for me to attend, focusing on several points of emphasis:
- Quality and background of instructors
- Coach to camper ratio
- Cost, culture and transportation
Allow me to start with #3 and work my way up to the top.
[mks_separator style=”solid” height=”2″]
Cost, Culture and Transportation
My dad wanted any camp, clinic or tournament I attended to be enjoyable, engaging and centered on technical improvement. He knew I’d get my scrimmage and exhibition fix with my older brother, Mike, in the backyard – or with friends in the street.
I remember him always drawing the parallel to Billy Packer teaching him how to shoot a free throw properly. This is culture; the makeup of the event, the setting, location, campers in attendance and guidelines.
I know he’d shoot for the stars, too, but the reality was he had 3 children, all of which played sports, all of which are costly in the summer time. Hence the emphasis on affordable events.
Finally, we needed a ride to and from the camp. It seems obvious, but realistically, this is a logistic that all parents have to think through ahead of time.
How can I get my son or daughter to and from this event? If there’s no affordable option, it’s a pass.
Coach to Camper Ratio
This Gettysburg Shooting Camp had a 50 camper cap, with 10 coaches to work with. I grew up in the traditional hotbed of Maryland – crab cakes and lacrosse are in our blood.
There were always options to be seen by the crowd from Hopkins, Maryland, Georgetown, Towson, Loyola… you name it, but my Dad sent me to this 2-day Gettysburg, PA, camp. The event focused on shooting, with a great ratio of coaches to campers, ensuring that the message was well-received.
Sometimes we can get lost in trying to learn too much at one camp, and in the process, lose sight of everything. Meaning, 2-days of high repetition in shooting, unique drills and auto-correction was WAY more valuable to me, than 2-days of shooting, dodging, ground balls, defense, transition, man-up, man-down and so on.
I remember talking to one of our coaches and asking if I could stick around after a session because I had a couple of questions. Those questions turned into 30 minutes of ‘coach tossing ball to player.’ I’ll never forget it.
Quality and Background of Instructors
For privacy, I won’t get into which coaches were there, and who specifically taught me X, Y and Z. It’s not about that. Rather, it was the takeaway packet handed out by the staff that allowed me (as a young 14 year old) to remember the points of emphasis on shooting, the unique drills we practiced, and how often I should be doing each.
We often forget that these campers are kids. They’re constantly absorbing new intel and their exposure to the world often comes through new technologies that we never had. With this rapid influx of information, their minds must be running a million miles an hour… all of the time! A simple take-home packet paid for the price of admission by itself and was such an easy way to leave a lasting impression on a young lacrosse player.
[mks_separator style=”solid” height=”2″]
I’m not endorsing the Gettysburg Shooting Camp. I’m not even sure if it’s still around. I’ll even one up to say I don’t intend on directly selling you on the Paul Rabil Experience.
Instead, by telling a written series of impactful moments in my young career as a lacrosse player, I hope to illustrate why I’ve built my online platform, and where I hope to take you and your ambition, if you elect to join me with your subscription.
Stay tuned for my next topic: “My First Club Team”
Sincerely,
Paul Rabil
PLL’s Paul Rabil Explains Why Pro Sports are Still So Valuable – Sportico.com
In 2020, a global pandemic shut down professional sports entirely. Millions have lost jobs and nearly 100,000 businesses have closed. Yet pro sports have demonstrated their resilience during these difficult times. With fans stuck at home, critical revenue was lost due to unsold tickets and merchandise, stadium parking and concessions were non-existent, and broadcast viewership was mostly down year-over-year, yet the world’s top sports franchises are worth more this year compared to last.
How? The increased value proposition of live sports on network television and streaming services.
Despite a decade’s worth of steady decline in cable television subscriptions thanks to cord-cutting, networks are continuing to pay increased rights fees for pro sports properties. For example, although U.S. households with cable TV subscriptions are down by almost 20 million since 2010, media rights fees for the NFL, NBA, NHL and MLS have increased year-over-year, with the next wave of renegotiations set for 2021.
The evolution of cable networks reveals the story behind why live sports are better positioned than any other program on television. More than any other form of programming, live sports impact revenue in the three major ways networks monetize:
- Advertising: Networks sell commercial inventory against their developed and owned original shows, cable news programs and live sports. These arrive in the form of 30- and 60-second commercials referred to as “spots and dots,” as well as in-game features like the PLL Halftime Show, which is presented by Progressive Insurance. Each form of advertising can be assigned a cost-per-impression (CPM), which designates a monetary value per thousand viewers.
- Affiliate fees from the multichannel video programming distributors (cable providers): Perhaps more recognizable as Comcast, Cox, DirecTV and DISH, these MVPDs pay the networks carriage fees per month, per subscriber. That way, when end consumers subscribe to a cable package, they get access to NBC, CBS, ABC, FOX, ESPN and more.
- Subscription Video On Demand: When Reed Hastings famously said Netflix wasn’t going to invest in live sports, the cable network heads exhaled, then asked themselves why they weren’t launching their own direct-to-consumer products that did feature live sports content. Born out of this new category of streaming were platforms like ESPN+, Disney+, Peacock, and CBS All Access. And to the surprise of entertainment execs who originally viewed these platforms as a home for episodic programming, live sports have demonstrated the ability to generate new paid subscribers for games available exclusively on the service.
Advertisers are flocking to spend against live sports. Ever since the debut of The Sopranos on HBO and the advent of on-demand technology, we’ve seen both a swing in preference for subscription programming over cable, and a viewing habit of fast-forwarding through commercials. Advertisers have since been scrambling to figure out where to place their dollars.
As a firewall against commercial-free programming, live sports have baked-in commercial breaks between quarters and during timeouts, penalties, challenges and reviews. Naturally, there are a number of ways advertisers can get involved organically, and they can count on watch time for their 30- and 60-second spots, since a sports fan often doesn’t want to miss the play coming out of the break.
With an estimated $72 billion to be spent on television advertising in the U.S. in 2020, advertisers are looking to be placed where appointment viewers are. They’re looking for a place with a targeted demographic, during a certain time of year, with a high level of engagement, and what we qualify in sports as brand loyalty. Sports are almost exclusively consumed live. Live, because your hometown is watching and cheering. Live, because being a part of the social media chatter leads to a sense of relevance and belonging. Live, because the betting markets require your immediate attention. And live, most importantly, because sports are the single most exciting form of original programming. No writers. No outcome certainty. Nobody knows who will win. That’s more attractive to advertisers. It’s more attractive to cable providers who often pay a higher carriage fee to guarantee the NFL ticket or next year’s Olympics. And it’s more attractive to subscribers who care deeply about their team, even if the English Premier League matches are exclusively available on Peacock and they have to come out-of-pocket for an additional $5 a month.
This is why sports are so valuable to networks. They are the only form of appointment viewing left.
The sports media ecosystem has certainly changed. Fear not the cord-cutters. Embrace the evolution of streaming. Recognize that media rights are now a combination of live broadcast and cable TV, with games streamed and available exclusively on a paired SVOD service. Also recognize that social media isn’t retracting overall viewership—it’s adding to it. However, those who can’t figure out how to qualify and quantify the increased consumption of game highlights and in-feed posts across social will be left behind.
And despite the recent economic deficits and near-term challenges that pro sports face due to the pandemic, teams and leagues are only building a stronger case for increased enterprise value—where media rights and advertising will continue to lead the charge.

Is This Pro Lacrosse’s Moment? This Star Is Betting Everything on It
Like golf and tennis, the P.L.L. has a touring model designed to spread the sport’s exposure as widely as possible, with six teams hitting 12 cities over summer weekends, with the league playing a total of three games each weekend. The festivities include instructional clinics, player interaction, contests and other offerings. The events evoke the energy of lacrosse’s marquee event: the N.C.A.A. tournament’s semifinals weekend, which attracts up to 90,000 fans every year.
The P.L.L. drew about 11,000 fans a weekend in June, its first month, peaking with about 16,000 on the weekend in Baltimore, a lacrosse hotbed. About 400,000 fans viewed a Sunday game at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J., over three NBC platforms.
“Our fans care deeply about the sport and the stars,” Paul Rabil said. “They support world-class lacrosse and will follow their favorite players and teams, no matter if the game is home, away, or at a neutral site.”
It’s this last piece of the equation that draws skepticism. Brendan Kelly, owner of the M.L.L.’s Chesapeake Bayhawks, has his doubts about the tour.
“Team sports require community support,” Kelly said. “And I don’t know how you build a community around a tour.”
The M. L.L. has been left to fight for its survival. It has bought back its media rights, raised player salaries and folded three franchises, leaving both leagues with six teams. Kelly said he believes his league will survive and could one day merge with the P.L.L. Rabil said he believes his will offer a better experience for both fans and players.
“If you can distill pro sports down into must-haves, you need to recruit and invest in the best players in the world, a major network distribution deal and a first-class fan experience,” Rabil said. “Pro lacrosse has never been positioned to capitalize on all three of these, until now. We’re a sports league and a media company.”
DeMatha alumni Chase Young and Paul Rabil execute socially distant jersey swap – NBC4 Washington
Chase Young hasn’t played a single snap for the Redskins yet and he’s already swapping his No. 99 jersey with other pro athletes.
Fellow DeMatha alumni and PLL star Paul Rabil got things started on Twitter by offering his No. 99 Atlas jersey for Young’s, all the while abiding by social distancing guidelines.
.@youngchase907 sending u my 99 @PLLAtlas jersey but need to get that size right before print. XXX or 4X? ??? @DeMathaCatholic pic.twitter.com/1gLgpuwt3J
— Paul Rabil (@PaulRabil) July 1, 2020
Young then responded, which feels like an appropriate time to mention how nonchalantly these guys throw around the triple-XL jersey as their jersey size.
3X brotha!! You 2X or 3X? https://t.co/AeEEOh4ujz
— CY2 (@youngchase907) July 2, 2020
2X got ground to make up https://t.co/7Crffp5jm6
— Paul Rabil (@PaulRabil) July 2, 2020
Rabil and Young, who share the same high school, have a mutual admiration for one another. A few months after the Redskins made Young the second overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, Rabil revealed he reached out to the young pass-rusher to congratulate him.
Chase is great, man,” Rabil said in June. “I shot him a note because obviously I think he’s a generational talent, his athleticism, his size and his work ethic… I’m pumped to see him wear No. 99. We have that in common. Sharing some additional commonalities is something Chase and I went back and forth on.”
From Rabil to Markelle Fultz, Young has plenty of support from local stars as he gets set to begin his career with his hometown team.

Lacrosse’s First Million-Dollar Athlete Was Frustrated by the Status Quo, So He’s Starting an All-New Pro League
7 min read
“This is the most challenging thing I’ve ever experienced,” says Paul Rabil.
Lacrosse’s most visible athlete, and the first one to reap more than $1 million in endorsements, didn’t set out to create a direct competitor to the existing pro league, Major League Lacrosse (MLL). But that’s exactly what he and his brother Mike — along with a cadre of sports and media investors — are doing with Premier League Lacrosse (PLL), with an inaugural season kicking off next summer. “Starting our own league was not our first choice,” he admits. “Unifying the game by creating an elevated professional lacrosse league was our top objective. But as any entrepreneur knows, getting to your ultimate goal will often involve alternate or unforeseen paths. You have to be opportunistic.”

What led Rabil, called “the Lebron James of lacrosse” by the New York Times, to defy the status quo and launch an entirely new league? Let’s go back 20 years to when he first became obsessed with the game. “When I was 12, my neighbor gave me his backup stick, and I fell in love with the game pretty quickly,” he recalls. “I think it was the combination of playing for a team collectively competing for a championship matched with the individual stylistic component of the game. I often tell people, ‘No stick is the same.’”
Rabil parlayed his passion for lacrosse into competing at the highest levels, winning two national championships at powerhouse Johns Hopkins, being a three-time pro MVP and playing in three different world championships for Team USA (they defeated Canada this past July). “I’ve been really fortunate to be fully immersed in the sport both as an amateur and a professional,” he says, “and coinciding with that, I’ve always had an entrepreneurial spirit.”
That entrepreneurial spirit, it seems, is a necessity for anyone interested in playing lacrosse professionally at the moment. “When I graduated college in 2008, the average wage was — and has been for MLL’s existence — in the range of $8,000 to $10,000,” he says, “so most guys have jobs in finance, real estate, legal or entertainment and moonlight playing professional lacrosse. ” Rabil himself was no exception: “I had a job as an investment sales analyst for a real estate company in D.C. right out of school. I lived at home with my brother, a serial entrepreneur and investor, and we would drive up and down 495, take the HOV lane, and that’s where we built our financial and analytical chops.”
Related: How to Become a Millionaire by Age 30
Pretty quickly, Rabil ditched the real estate game and found a way to make lacrosse his full-time vocation: “Nine months after my career started in real estate, I decided to take a leap of faith and join a very small group of full-time professional players. What that entailed was endorsements, plus a camp and clinic business that supported our pro salaries.”
While Rabil and his fellow players maintained the dream of playing professional-level lacrosse full time, the financial realities of the existing league made that impossible. Add to that MLL’s infrastructure and operations issues, which have led to declining attendance and the occasional absence of necessities like locker rooms and showers, and the situation became untenable for Rabil. In fact, it led directly to the creation of PLL, the first league of its kind to be formed and owned by the players themselves.
“We fully believe that in order to bring lacrosse to the next level, we need a league that puts players first,” says Rabil. This means full-time salaries, healthcare, performance-based bonuses and equity. “The equity is very attractive to them, and it’s something no sports team league has ever done.” Though MLL recently announced that its owners voted to raise its team salary cap by 51 percent, it could be too little too late.

Rabil is also cognizant of how the nature of sports celebrity is evolving: “We’re living in a world where the players are being celebrated first, even in team sports — look at LeBron James, Cristiano Ronaldo, Steph Curry and Tom Brady. They all have growing fan bases that are more and more agnostic to geo-affiliation. ” To that end, PLL is embracing new media and building a blueprint for its players to become sports stars. Their goal is to create an “immersive fan experience” via state-of-the-art TV and digital broadcasts, social media, innovative camera angles and the latest tech. As someone with 320,000 Instagram followers, a YouTube channel that earns 4.5M minutes watched every month, and a popular sports/entertainment/business-focused podcast, Rabil understands the importance of connecting with fans.

Perhaps the most impact PLL will have on the growth of the league and the sport of lacrosse will be that all games — from the regular season to the all-star game to the championship — will be broadcast live on the NBC family of networks, including 19 network broadcast games on NBC Flagship and NBC Sports, and 19 broadcast games on NBC Gold.
Another aspect of PLL that Rabil is particularly excited about is its revolutionary tour-based model. Unlike traditional geo-based teams (New York Yankees, Green Bay Packers, etc. ) the six-team, player-focused league — Rabil assures us the game’s most elite players from around the world are joining the new league — will play at weekend events in cities around the U.S. “We know we aren’t as big as the ‘Big 4’ team sports that own premium sports venues, creating geographic relevance,” says Rabil, sounding more like a CEO than a pro athlete, “and as such we’re optimizing the business so we can solve for those inefficiencies.” Rabil considers the NCAA’s Final Four weekend the gold standard: “Every year it falls on Memorial Day weekend, where you have top teams across three divisions descend upon a major market city to play at a major professional venue competing for a championship. So what we said is, ‘Hey, why don’t we adopt the Final Four model, put it on wheels and create the PLL as tour-based.’”
Related: 5 Keys to Inspiring Leadership, No Matter Your Style
As for the timing of the league’s launch, Rabil believes it couldn’t be better: “Lacrosse is booming. It’s the oldest sport in the U.S. — it was created by Native Americans — and it’s the only team sport in the country that has continued to grow in participation numbers over the last 15 years.” With the proliferation of sports networks like NBC Sports, nationally televised lacrosse has gone from a once-a-year event featuring the college Final Four to having close to 100 college games shown every season.
Even though all the pieces are falling into place, this hasn’t been an easy journey for Rabil. “There’s conflict,” he admits, “but I think a core characteristic of an entrepreneur is the ability to remain resolute. My fellow players and I know that for our game to grow, we’ve got to take the opportunity that’s in front of us. And we feel like there’s no better time to do that than now.”
A closed family circle – Newspaper Kommersant No. 194 (6432) dated 23.10.2018
The directorial debut of the famous actor Paul Dano was released – the drama “Wild Life” about a dysfunctional family with Carey Mulligan and Jake Gyllenhaal in the lead roles. By Julia Shagelman.
For his first directing experience, Paul Dano, who played not always big, but every time difficult and memorable roles with directors such as Richard Linklater, Paul Thomas Anderson, Denis Villeneuve, Paolo Sorrentino, Steve McQueen, chose a very traditional material. It is a novel by Richard Ford, a Pulitzer Prize winner and a diligent chronicler of the slow dying of the American Dream and the American family. Dano’s film, in general, does not convey anything new on this topic, following the path beaten not only by great paintings – like Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), American Beauty (1999), Road of Change (2008 ), but also dozens, if not hundreds of less great films, the usual platform for which the Sundance Film Festival becomes every year.
The premiere of “Wild Life” took place this year in the same place, but from the general series it is distinguished by technical perfection, surprising for the debut work, and a calm, restrained, despite the destructiveness of what is happening, manner of narration.
Golf instructor Jerry (Jake Gyllenhaal), his housewife wife Janet (Carey Mulligan) and 14-year-old son Joe (Ed Ochsenbuld, consciously or not in some way outwardly reminiscent of director Paul Dano) in the first shots of the film seem to be an exemplary American family, as if descended from the advertising illustrations of the era in question. Dad and son play American football in the backyard, Mom cooks dinner, then they do their homework together, the baseball commentator mumbles over the radio that 1960 is going to be a really great year.Everyone smiles at each other and exchanges fleeting affection. The background is again a typical small town in Montana: neat houses, cute cars, schoolchildren on bicycles, beautiful mountains in the distance, sheer grace.
However, it quickly turns out that this picture is not as idyllic as it seems. Forest fires are approaching the city, and, just as its streets are poisoned by invisible, but dangerous to health smoke, the Brinson family is eaten away from the inside for the time imperceptible, but equally poisonous contradictions. And as soon as Jerry loses his job at the golf club, the prosperous facade begins to crack and crumble right before our eyes.
At first, Janet tries to behave like a good wife of the middle of the twentieth century: she supports and consoles her husband, but when the search for a job is delayed, peaceful family dinners turn into a series of scandals.
Jerry reacts to this situation in a very masculine way: he just runs away, formally – to put out fires for a dollar an hour, in fact – away from the problems that need to be solved.
Janet, left alone with her son in a town where she knows no one and where she has no one to even talk to, almost immediately slips into a vicious circle of emotional decay and self-pity, in which she rushes about, throwing all her old grievances on the teenager’s head, unfulfilled ambitions and unspoken claims. In a desperate attempt to either take revenge on her husband, or somehow break out of the impasse, she starts a relationship with a wealthy businessman, Mr. Miller (Bill Camp), which unfolds in full view of her son, reacting to this with a mixture of horror and disgust.
It is Joe, who at first appears in a family crisis as a slightly detached observer, who becomes the main character of the film. All events are passed through his perception, and when parents suddenly turn into helpless and capricious children, he remains almost the only responsible and mature person – and this character evokes the greatest sympathy and sympathy from the viewer. If adults have vivid, expansive episodes here, then Joe remains quiet and closed throughout the film, all his emotional experiences almost do not appear outwardly, but they are completely understandable and transparent, and the young Australian actor Oxenbuld copes with the role brilliantly, without getting lost against the background of excellent works by Gyllenhaal and Mulligan.
Joe’s last island of stability is his work in a photo studio, where he helps to shoot portraits of happy families. These slightly naive and rather old-fashioned for the modern eye, the cards rhyme with the visual style of the cinematographer Diego Garcia, in which there are many simple, clean compositions with light backgrounds and close-ups that give the actors the opportunity to show the slightest shades of emotion.
The script, written by Dano himself in collaboration with Zoya Kazan, is deeply and psychologically accurate, at the same time, without hysteria and anguish, it plunges into the souls and minds of all three heroes. There are no right and wrong (the only negative character, and even then with a stretch, can only be called the nasty Mr. Miller), Jerry and Janet are equally responsible for the breakup of their marriage and the psychological trauma of their son, which do not happen by someone’s evil will , but because this is how life is. Although called wild, in fact it is completely ordinary.
