Every morning Kathy trailers her horses to a state park to take out riders. At Allapattah Flats, riders will enter a canopied area known as “Costa Rica,” and on the low lands they can view coffee bean plants and ancient pecan trees.

Horseback Riding at Greenridge Stables in Palm City

Martin County is a horse lover’s paradise, full of winding, state-protected nature trails in Southeast Florida’s authentic cowboy country.
But don’t just take our word for it; talk to Kathy McLaughlin, owner of Palm City’s Greenridge Stables. This is her territory — where she grew up, raised 10 kids with her husband and now runs a successful equine business. She offers a range of services, including horse boarding, riding instruction, fox hunting and scenic trail rides.
“One of the state’s best-kept secrets,” she said of the plethora of local equestrian trail getaways. “Maybe they’re all not perfectly groomed. But I can guarantee you they are peaceful and take you through a part of Florida most people never experience. It’s a shame they aren’t used enough.”
McLaughlin is trying to change that.
If you’re hankering for a guided horse ride – either Western or English saddle — in Martin County, Greenridge Stables is the go-to place to saddle up.
McLaughlin or one of her five guides is available seven days a week for riding adventures at any one of five state or county parks. One ride, in nearby Hawk’s Hammock, is just a stone’s throw from the stables; others require McLaughlin to transport the steeds via trailer and meet clients at the site.
The cost is the same for off-site adventures — $100 – whether it’s one person or a party of 10. (The nearby park, which doesn’t require transportation, is $25 an hour.) If there’s a group, she sets the ride’s pace for the least-experienced rider. If all the riders are competent and confident, expect to walk, trot and canter through some of the state’s most glorious back country, which can be reached only by foot or by horse.
She’s not into setting time limits.
“If it’s a beautiful day, and it usually is, we go however long we feel like it,” she said. “Time on a horse is time well spent. I want people to come away with a great memory and happy memories.”
She’s often asked if there’s an age limit when it comes to riding.
Absolutely not, McLaughlin said.
“I ride with ladies well into their 70s, even 80s,” she said. “This is one sport that you can just keep improving on as you get older. As long as you’re physically able, you can enjoy a ride on a horse.”
We joined a guided tour of the Allapattah Flats in the northwestern tip of the county. This state Wildlife Management Area anchors nearly 21,000 acres of marshes and slash pine flatwoods, giving refuge in a protected habitat to rare birds and animals, white-tailed deer, wild turkeys and hogs.
Allapattah comes from the Seminole Indian word for alligator, and yes, McLaughlin has seen plenty in the trail’s bordering marshes and controlled waterways. But they pay little attention to the horses and riders, other than opening their sleepy eyes to observe the intruders as they pass by.
“We call this the Costa Rica adventure,” said Tammy Lenit, who boards Beamer, her Tennessee Walker, at Greenridge Stables, and frequently joins McLaughlin’s nature excursions.
Indeed, once riders enter the shady woods, they’ll ride along an oak-canopied trail bordered by rows of pecan trees, low-lying coffee plants and massive ferns.
“This is old-time Florida at its best,” Lenit said. “It’s so far removed from beaches and theme parks, yet this is what the state once looked like.”
Another plus: It’s always 10 degrees cooler in the Flats and there’s an inexplicable absence of bugs –usually a nuisance for summertime riders, but not here. And for moonlight rides, there’s no better place for stargazing. In this wilderness area, technology seems like light years away.
McLaughlin may be the only trail boss in Florida who encourages her customers to do some reading before they join one of her rides. She highly recommends “A Land Remembered” by the late Patrick Smith, a best-selling novel set in pioneer Florida that covers over a century of state history from 1858 to 1968.
“It should be required of anyone who wants to understand where we came from,” she said.
“We still have the cattle ranches right here in Martin County, we still have some of that unspoiled land the settlers discovered when they arrived. And the best way to see it is the way they did – on the back of a horse.”
There’s still a little bit of that pioneer in McLaughlin. She doesn’t cotton to social media; she doesn’t even have a computer. To book a ride, call for a reservation. She may not answer up right away, but she always gets back to you.
These days, she said she’s living the dream. A former insurance agent, she quit that profession to be an at-home mom for several years. She opened the stables to help support her own horse habit, and business just keeps growing.
“It’s hard to explain the horse bug. It’s something in your blood, something you’re born with,” she said. “This isn’t a job to me. It’s a passion. I couldn’t imagine a better life.”

World-Class Equestrian Competition
Not only is the Winter Equestrian Festival one of the largest annual sporting events in The Palm Beaches, but it’s also the longest-running equestrian event in the world. It attracts national and international athletes competing for prizes, readying for the Olympics, or beginning careers in equestrian.

Incredible Venue
When the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center once again allows for visitors, it’s a center worth going to for sure. It’s an equestrian venue known throughout the world. The Center encompasses a total of 500 acres and the competition arenas alone cover 80 acres. In all there are 18 arenas, and the main International Arena is surrounded by stadium and box seating as well as hospitality pavilions. The main grounds house more than 250 permanent equine stalls, horse trails, pedestrian paths, golf cart tracks, and dedicated shopping areas.

Coinciding with the Winter Equestrian Festival is Palm Beach International Polo Season, held nearby at the International Polo Club Palm Beach. This season, spectators may still revel in the celebrated Sunday Brunch, and take in some polo too. Host city Wellington, isn’t just about the horses, spend an entire day at the Wellington Environmental Preserve, featuring nature trails, a six-story observation tower and, of course, an equestrian trail.

90,000 Dubai Man Made Islands: Desert Mirage
To create this island, which has become a symbol of Dubai, it took 85 million cubic meters of sand taken from the bottom of the Persian Gulf, and 7 million tons of rocks to build a breakwater.
In addition to five-star hotels and the most luxurious residential complexes and villas in Dubai, the first monorail in the Middle East and a six-lane underwater tunnel that connects the trunk of the “palm” to the outer extremity was built here. By some estimates, the island cost $ 12 billion to build, not counting fixed operating costs.
However, Palm Jumeirah has been criticized for environmental and livelihood reasons. The developers are accused of large-scale excavation work dramatically changing the nature of waves, tides, erosion and temperatures in the nearby waters of the Persian Gulf. Some critics even claim that an entire coral reef died during the construction of Palm Jumeirah. The creators of the project counteract that the breakwater created to protect the island will also attract new marine life.To help the emergence of new coral reefs, two American F-100 Super Saber fighters were even sunk near the island.
Another problem arose when it became clear that due to the bizarre shape of the island, water stagnates in the straits between the “trunk” and “branches”, algae and mosquitoes multiply.
It was partially solved by additional holes in the outer breakwater, which improved the circulation of sea water. As for the residents, they complain about traffic jams that inevitably arise when tens of thousands of people leave and return to work on the same road.After all, the creators of the island, due to the increased cost of the project, doubled the building density without consulting the buyers.
Not everyone knows that Palm Jumeirah is not the only palm-shaped island in Dubai. On the contrary, it is the smallest of the three “palm trees” that were to appear in different parts of this emirate. The other two – Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira – were in for a sad fate. The second largest “palm island” Palm Jebel Ali managed to fill up and even partially sell to local investors, who later tried to fight for their rights and complain to the Dubai authorities about Nakheel.
However, the “palm” still remains deserted, although its area is one and a half times larger than that of Palm Jumeirah, and it was planned to inhabit it by 250 thousand people.Along the perimeter of this island, the words of one of the poems of the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum, who at that time was a big fan of the construction of “palm trees”, were to be embossed in the form of footpaths. Loosely translated from Arabic, they sound like this:
Only consult the wise.
Not everyone who mounted a horse is a rider.
Write on the water – who did it before?
Great people are created for difficulties.
Finally, the last and largest of the “palm trees”, which was supposed to appear opposite the historic center of Dubai – Deira district – was never completely filled up.In 2013, Nakheel announced a desire to reopen the project, but on a much more modest scale than previously planned. So it is better to admire all three artificial “palm islands” in Dubai from the air or using satellite maps.
Archipelago with a heart in St. Petersburg
But another megaproject, which also froze for a long time due to the crisis, has recently come to life. The artificial archipelago The World consists of 300 islands with outlines reminiscent of the continents of the Earth.Their total area is 55 square kilometers, the sizes of each vary from 14 to 42 thousand square meters. Unlike other artificial islands in Dubai, they are located 4 kilometers from the coast and are connected with it only by water and air traffic. Thanks to them alone, the emirate was able to add 232 kilometers of coastline to itself.
It was originally planned that The World will become an elite community, which will consist of the richest inhabitants of the planet and celebrities. At various times, the names of the British billionaire Richard Branson (allegedly acquired the island “Great Britain”) and the Hollywood couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (the island “Ethiopia”) were associated with him.
One of the islands in the “Antarctica” region, the ruler of Dubai, as reported by the media, personally presented to the famous race car driver Michael Schumacher. The Russians are also rumored to be among the buyers, but their names are unknown. According to local media reports, Russian developers and businessmen bought islands in the region of “Russia” – one of the largest parts of the archipelago.
The World project was launched at the peak of the Dubai real estate boom, but in 2008 it froze for a long time due to the crisis. As a result, of the whole variety of islands, only two are built up at the moment – “Lebanon” and “Greenland”, which, according to rumors, belongs to the ruler of Dubai.Recently, the archipelago has regained universal attention thanks to the new project “Heart of Europe”, which unites 6 islands: “Europe”, “Germany”, “Monaco”, “St. Petersburg”, “Sweden” and “Switzerland”. It may be interesting for Russians that the heart-shaped island “St. Petersburg” plays a key role in it.
It is on these islands that the developers promise to implement revolutionary climate technologies, creating an oasis of coolness in hot Dubai, where rain and even snow will fall from the sky.Basically, the islands will maintain the most comfortable “European” temperature – 27 degrees Celsius, and precipitation will come thanks to special pumps hidden in the roofs of houses, as is done when filming movies. At the same time, the developers claim that the energy consumption will not be much higher than that of a conventional air conditioning system in a large shopping center.
Another idea of the creators should support the illusion of being in Europe – to use the euro as currency on these islands.Around them, for the first time in the world, the concept of “floating houses” will be implemented, one floor of which will be completely under water, and they themselves will be held in one place with the help of anchors. Naturally, the sea itself will replace the pool in these villas.
Island with a Ferris wheel
The latest addition to the line of artificial islands in Dubai is Bluewater Island, which is piled directly opposite the coastal residential complex Jumeirah Beach Residence, which is popular among natives of Russia and many other countries.The distance from the island to the mainland is only 500 meters. Construction of the island began in 2013.
By analogy with the British London Eye, the Dubai Eye will be built on the island, which promises to be the tallest in the world. And what, if not the tallest, wheel could appear in Dubai, where everything must necessarily be the largest: the world’s tallest skyscraper Burj Khalifa, the largest (in the future) “city under a roof” and even a giant photographic frame in one of the city parks.
Whether we see new artificial islands in Dubai will depend on how Dubai and the UAE as a whole cope with the current drop in oil prices. The memory of 2008, when giant construction sites froze and the city was half empty as many expats went home, is still fresh enough.
Nevertheless, the idea has already appeared to expand the The World archipelago, adding to it new The Universe islands, which will be built in the likeness of the universe.
Dubai – a trip to the Palm Island
The date palm is one of the symbols of Dubai.But the bell does not depict a tree, but a “miracle island”, as it is also called. This is Palm Island, Palm Jumeirah.
Along the shaft to the top – a highway and an overpass, along which 4 monorail carriages run. On both sides at the bottom of the “trunk” are multi-storey residential complexes, starting from the middle there are eight “branches” on which “exclusive” villas are located for those with money. And protects this island from the waves of the Persian Gulf “crescent” – a breakwater on which there are luxury hotels.This is just a note.
After all, the main thing is that this “palm” is a man-made island. At the beginning of this century, there was nothing here !!!
The extraordinary idea of creating a man-made island in Dubai was born in the late 90s.
The buildable 72-kilometer coastline has already been developed. The number of those wishing to buy real estate here grew. And not only Dubai! Who doesn’t want to have a house under palm trees and a hot sun all year round!
The construction was initiated by the monarch of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed, who was captivated by the originality of the Palm Jumeirah megaproject.Just think – an island in the form of a palm tree. Here is the symbol of the country and … getting a coastline of 56 km, which is 9 times more if the island had a round shape! Each owner of the villa or each tourist of the hotel will have their own access to the beach!
I will not bore you with impressive figures – how many stones, sand, workers, hours, millions of dollars, etc. it took to bring this ambitious project to life! It was necessary to mention the names of architects, engineers, ordinary workers …
I was amazed that 15 years ago there was NOTHING here !!! I remembered the famous Dutch proverb: “God created the earth, and the Dutch made Holland.
“Today, 30% of the territory of a small European country is man-made. Now we can safely say about the Dubai people that they are the creators of new lands. Note, not without the help of the same Dutch.
We drove leisurely along the flyover. The monorail was designed by the Japanese. There is no driver. The wagons are rolling “by themselves.” I read that it was from there that the “palm” itself, its “trunk”, “branches” in both directions could be seen quite well. But, according to many reviews, “summer cottages” for the rich seemed to be a surprisingly standard, typical set of buildings under monotonous roofs.Although there are many rooms, amenities and pools.
Finally, the Atlantis Hotel, which is located at the “top” of the palm tree, became clearly visible.
These nice high-rise buildings with front porches stretched on our side. Surprisingly, there were many flower beds and already familiar palms.
The lower villas were crowned with characteristic crenellated turrets, making them look like small fortresses.
The sky was reflected in the blue glasses.Yes, the yellow walls are the color of the desert, and the blue glass is the blue of the sky.
And here is the Atlantis. But the bus quickly passed by, and the photos did not come out at that moment. This was done later. At the hotel we got off the “yellow” line of the sightseeing double-decker bus and switched to the “pink” one.
It was no longer a cumbersome two-story, but a small nimble bus with tinted windows, and it rushed us along the “crescent”, on which stood the hotels operating and under construction.From the right branch of the “crescent” one could clearly see the “Parus” hotel and the nearby “wave” of the Jumeirah hotel.
And these are already hotels on the other side of the “crescent”. Oriental flavor is well felt here.
Combination of yellow and white against a blue sky. I remembered the Russian estates of the 19th century in the classical style.
The same yellow walls, white porticoes and columns. And young ladies in airy long white dresses. White gloves, white fishnet umbrellas, light curls in a high hairdo and ringing laughter.Nearby are the gallant hussars, dashingly twirling their mustaches. Dreaming! You won’t even see a dog on the street in this heat! By the way, I haven’t seen a single dog or a single cat in Dubai! Probably nap by the pool, if they are, of course.
The trip on the opposite side of the “crescent” caused more delight. Here a view of the “Marina” was opened. The dark silhouettes of skyscrapers stretched along the bay reminded me of Manhattan in New York.
The driver gave us time to walk along the pink embankment and take photos.
And this is the embankment along the Atlantis hotel. It was not thought over a little. There are no normal crossings and walkways for pedestrians.
We walked and walked along the concrete fence. There was no square in front of the hotel, where, in theory, everyone was supposed to pose.
But it was comfortable to sit. Someone climbed over a high concrete fence, but I walked another fifty meters. But there was no crossing again, there was no traffic light either. I had to cross the road, and then balance on the curb and trample the grass of the lawn (somehow embarrassing, because growing grass here is worth its weight in gold!).
The cherished photo was not taken immediately. A line of Chinese lined up to several white stones, on which it was convenient to pose. We found a “loose” stone on the side.
On the territory of Atlantis there is the Aquaventure water park – the best in Europe and the Middle East, the Dolphin Bay dolphinarium, the Lost Chambers marine aquarium.
The inhabitants of the deep sea inspire admiration, but the photographs, alas, do not come out!
After standing by the transparent glass, it was time to go to a restaurant, in which, however, we did not sit for long, since it was necessary to have time for a boat trip by 16 o’clock.
I will only note that here I drank the “most expensive” beer and broke my “record”. Once at Montreal Airport Dorval, now named after the country’s eminent Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau, a pint of Heineken cost me 14 Canadian dollars. Here, if translated into the same dollars, then 17! But we were glad, since alcohol is generally prohibited in Dubai. Not for sale in stores, it is forbidden to bring with you. Drinks are available only in hotels, and even then not in all restaurants, and for decent money.
And now we are on a small pleasure boat and a can of beer, one and a half times smaller than the standard one, was offered by an obliging stewart for 10 dollars. We refused. I was not upset, as incredible pictures began to unfold. Yachts, boats … And YACHTS again!
Could the desert caravans once have imagined, waiting for hours for the appearance of a spring with water, that they would soon change from camels to boats and yachts and would no longer plow the sand dunes, but the water surface !? Personal yachts and crystal skyscrapers soaring into the skies are the hallmarks of modern Dubai.
People posed endlessly, everyone clicked the shutters of cameras or pressed the buttons of smartphones. We could not resist either. I liked this photo. Pink cheeks – this is usually how I tan. Pink at first, it’s good that it’s not crimson-red. But after a couple of days – quite a beautiful tan.
We tried to capture any detail. The red spot of some vessel looked very impressive.
This is Marina. It is home to some of the tallest residential buildings in the world.The most spectacular among them is the “twisted” skyscraper “Cayan Tower”. Very comfortable apartments. But personally, I would be scared to live in such a glass box. And just imagine that I am going up to the 40th, 50th .., 100th floor … It’s getting sick!
The history of high-rise construction in Dubai began in 1979, when the 39-storey Dubai World Trade Center was built, the height of which was 149 meters. At that time, this building became the tallest in the Middle East.
After 2005, Dubai experienced a real high-rise construction boom.And after 5 years in Dubai there were already 38 constructed high-rise buildings above 120 meters, another 20 were under construction. In 2015, Dubai has more buildings over 100 stories high than any other city in the world! Many of them are in the Dubai Marina.
“Pink” Atlantis reminded me of Mont Saint Michel in France. Mountain …
Beach, sand, palms and houses … Beauty! As in the “dacha” …
Finally, the boat sailed to the famous hotel. The private beach became visible.To be honest, the inside of the hotel reminded me of a railway station. There are a lot of people, tourists, noisy kids. The interior design is also not very – a bit corny for my taste, although the Dale Chiuli chandelier in the central foyer, as always, has caused delight. The hotel is not just allowed to enter, if you have not stayed in it. But if there is an order for a restaurant, then please.
And so we sailed back. Other lighting. And again the skyscrapers of the Marina.

It just attracts here.They say that Sheikh Mohammed presented one of the man-made islands near Palm Jumeirah to the famous race car driver Schumacher. Poor fellow! Does he need it now?

We barely made it to the last bus of the “yellow line”, which took us to the famous “Marina”, with which we were not lucky, not on the first day (which we have yet to tell in another essay), nor now.The driver was clearly in a hurry to go home – we were racing and no good photos came out.
Typical inhabitants are local ladies, a tourist is waiting for the sunset. I know how beautiful “Marina” will be with night restaurant boats decorated with colorful lanterns.

The mosque is very effective when illuminated.
The final stop of the “yellow” line in the famous Mall of the Emirates.This is not a very good photo (the last frame, the camera is “dead”) of the New Year’s decorations. A giant bell! Dubai people want to break records in everything. Then I specially went to this mall to take a picture nearby. We ran, ran along its floors-passages-lines. Not found !!!
And as a conclusion. Palm Jumeirah is the smallest of the three palm trees to appear in Dubai. The other two island palm trees, even more grandiose – “Palm Jebel Ali” and “Palm Deira” – faced the difficulties of the global financial crisis.The Nakheel company (which in Arabic means “palm trees”) declared itself bankrupt, although it was later “saved” by cash infusions from local sheikhs.
The second island, even more gigantic, had only been filled up. They planned to settle 250 thousand people there. The third “palm” was supposed to become just gigantic. And they also create hundreds of small islands – a view from space – a map of the world. In total, up to 2 million people were supposed to settle on the man-made islands. But the pace slowed down a lot …
And the most curious thing is that the footpaths were supposed to “speak” with the words of one of the poems of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al-Maktoum:
“Consult only the wise.

And also – the “palm islands” in Dubai are good to admire from a helicopter or using satellite maps. Astronauts also see them. But even from the second floor of the excursion bus and boat, pleasure is guaranteed!

90,000 Man-made landscapes of the XXI century | Architecture and construction
Opportunities for creating a comfortable living environment in the desert.At the beginning of the XXI century. appeared and, more importantly, began to be realized grandiose architectural plans. One of them is Dubai – a city that is growing rapidly (the world’s highest density of construction cranes per hectare of territory), and is growing outside the box.
A comfortable living environment is created in the lifeless desert, corresponding to the colossal income from the sale of oil.
90% of the territory of the United Arab Emirates is covered with desert (Fig.1) and is almost unoccupied. The most favorable conditions for life are near the water area of the Persian Gulf and in the water area itself.
The first architectural object that aroused interest in Dubai was the “Arab Tower” (Burj Alarab) hotel (Fig. 2), built on an artificial island in the Persian Gulf. The hotel has an expressive architectural appearance and unheard of comfort – 7 stars.
Another area of Dubai’s development is the creation of large public spaces with an artificial climate.The world’s largest artificial snow skiing hall leaves a strong impression. It has a length of 400 m, the height difference is 80 m (which is comparable to the Belarusian “Silichi” and “Logoisk”).
Palm Jumeirah Island. The idea to develop the city in the Persian Gulf proved to be promising, and a new architectural object, which has no analogues, appeared – the Palm Jumerah island.
The composition of the island is designed for perception from above – from an airplane when approaching the airport in Dubai or from space (Fig.3). The image of the palm island is supported not only by the shape of the plan, but also by 120 thousand palms that will be planted on the island.
Construction work began in 2001. It was preceded by 3 years of research and design work, in which 40 consulting and about 50 research and design firms participated. To create the island, it took 7 million m2 of stone, laid in an artificial foundation, with a bay depth of 8-11 m.
An island in the Persian Gulf, with a diameter of 6 km (this is the same distance as from the Government House in Minsk to the park im.Chelyuskintsev) has already been built. Currently, construction of 2,000 houses (villas, townhouses, apartments) and 5,000 apartments in residential buildings and hotel rooms is underway (Fig. 4). Low-rise (1–2 floors) villas prevail, each house has a private beach (Fig. 5).
The World Archipelago. The man-made archipelago of the Earth began to be built in 2003, the planned completion of construction – 2008
It consists of 300 private islands, the configuration of which repeats the configuration of the continents of the globe (Fig.6). The size of the archipelago is 9×7 km. The area of the islands varies from 14,000 to 42,000 m2. The very first island built is the United Arab Emirates. There are islands with familiar names – Moscow, Smolensk, Chechnya.
Palm Jebel Ali Island. The island is being built 22 km from Palm Jumerah. Its dimensions are 7.5×7.5 km. Construction work began in 2003, the planned completion of construction – 2008
