WHERE IS CAMP AGAWAK LOCATED?
Camp Agawak is located in the heart of the beautiful northwoods of Wisconsin. The camp property is located on a tract of 200 heavily wooded acres, in the town of Minocqua, Wisconsin. Agawak borders Blue Lake, a 460 acre private lake, considered one of the top five purest lakes in the state with its clear water and soft sand bottom. The camp has 1500 feet of sand beach on the eastern shore which allows-sunshine all day long. First established in 1921, Agawak has always been a premier camp for girls in the Midwest region.
AGAWAK IS A SPECIAL PLACE
The key to having your daughter love her experience at camp, and grow at the same time is making sure she feels she is an integral part of the camp. Our cabin groups will be small in size and our enrollment will be limited to insure a warm personal experience. Our greatest emphasis is placed on meeting the needs of the individual camper, to assure her happiness, personal security and growth within the group. To achieve these ends, Agawak stresses careful and intelligent guidance within a diversified program that allows each camper to make personal choices in the activities in which she participates, while encouraging her to try out programs that she has never experienced. We are a spirited camp like no other which makes Agawak a magical place. Our staff are amazing role models who understand the importance of caring for someone else’s child.
WHO IS THE DIRECTOR?
Mary Fried has been the owner and director since 1989. She brings a world of experience and warmth to Camp Agawak. The warmth and understanding Mary possesses is her most valuable asset in working with the campers to give them the positive experience you want for your daughter. For over a decade Mary worked in the school setting providing guidance and counseling services to elementary and middle school age children and their parent. With a Masters Degree in Educational Psychology, Mary provides the leadership needed in working with the campers and staff. Her concern and sensitivity for others enhances each campers experience while at Agawak.
Mary brings warmth, understanding and enthusiasm to a new generation of Agawak Girls. She has created a fun, spirited and family type camp atmosphere to make the summer memorable and meaningful to each girl that attends Agawak. You will find Mary involved in every facet of camp and hands-on leadership is what she believes in.
ABOUT OUR STAFF
Our staff is directly responsible for creating the warm family type atmosphere that is noticed once you set foot on Agawak ground. Our camp is outstanding because of our amazing, talented and spirited staff. Our senior counselors are chosen from colleges throughout the country. We hire specialists to lead several key activities who are educators and professionals in their field. Our specialists bring years of experience and knowlege with them which enhances the quality of our instruction. Many of our counselors are teachers or studying to be teachers. We also have a select group of staff members from abroad, mainly Australia and New Zealand. Junior counselors who have come up the ranks complement our blend of personalities among the staff ranks. They all have been selected not only because of their special aptitudes in various activities, but also for their CHARACTER, ENTHUSIASM, WARMTH and GENUINE INTEREST in working with children. We maintain a minimum ratio of ONE COUNSELOR TO EVERY THREE CAMPERS. We are very proud of our staff and the job they have done over the years. Camp Agawak’s success can be attributed to the efforts made by the staff members over its 90 year tradition.
WATERFRONT
The waterfront at Camp Agawak is breathtaking and consists of 1500 feet of beach frontage. The south and west exposure on the lakefront insures us of having sun on our shore most of the day. The swimming area is enclosed in a buoyed crib system for safe supervision. There is a Blob area for bouncing your way into the water and a large inflatable water slide. We have two separate water-ski piers with 5 ski boats at our disposal. The girls swim daily and there is a complete fleet of canoes, sailboats, rowboats, funyaks, paddle boats, paddle boards and a pontoon boat to enjoy on the waters of Blue Lake. WE FOLLOW ALL SAFETY AND RED CROSS STANDARDS IN OUR TOTAL WATERFRONT PROGRAM.
LAND ACTIVITIES
Major facilities for land sports at camp include two athletic fields for soccer, softball, volleyball and other various games. There is room for every conceivable land sport: archery at the archery range, riflery at our rifle range, four tennis courts for tennis, basketball on the basketball court, gaga at our gaga pit and trampolines for our very special game of trampball. Tetherballs and other favorites can be found on the camp grounds. Our 55′ Tango Tower with Zip line is a huge camp favorite and challenges gallore. There also is an outdoor campfire site for the weekly all-camp campfire programs. A recreation building offers space for indoor gymnastics, dance, aerobics and games. We have ping-pong and other games available in our camper retreat.
DRAMA/ ARTS & CRAFTS
Camp Agawak is noted for its shows, dramatic plays and performances. We have a magnificent stage complete with costume room available to present the many productions we put on. There will be an abundance of singing at camp, dancing and other exciting forms of dance will be introduced. We also have a talent show so get your act ready for the summer ahead! Our arts and crafts department offers campers the opportunity to express their creativity. Our imaginative and certified art teacher continually develops fun projects for campers to enjoy. From basket weaving, to beading, to candle making our creative campers will find plenty of exciting things to choose from.
TRIPPING
We have an EXCELLENT TRIPPING PROGRAM and have our own “trip shack” with updated and quality equipment available. A six day Canadian Boundary Water canoe trip will be offered for our 10th grade campers along with a 2 day Sylvania Hiking trip for our 9th grade camper. Cabin overnights to our beautiful 26 foot teepee located on our property is mandatory each session and gives campers the chance to sleep under the stars and enjoy a roaring campfire. We also offer other forms of tripping to other Wisconsin destinations such as Lake Superior and Copper Falls. Lengths of trips are determined by age and skill level.
CABIN LIFE
All our cabins are equipped with heat, electricity, bathrooms, sinks and ceiling fans. Campers will select either a top or bottom bunk for themselves once they arrive at camp. Three qualified and kind counselors will look after the health and happiness of your daughter in her cabin setting. Campers share a cabin with 8-10 girls and each girl is given a set of shelves to keep her belonging organized on. One counselor is required to be physically in the cabin at night while campers are sleeping.
HEALTH
The health of the girls is carefully monitored at camp. We have a well equipped infirmary with 4 registered nurses providing care to our camp family. We are very fortunate to be 5 miles from the Howard Young Medical Center and The Marshfield Clinic, a regional facility offering over 40 doctors on their staff.
WHY AGAWAK?
That’s easy because we will genuinely care about the health, safety and personal growth of your daughter. She will became a more confident and self assured young person at Agawak. We will make her feel a part of our camp family, embrace her and encourage her to grow and try new things. Our programming, spirit and rich traditions will become a part of who she is meant to be and will help develop leadership skills and self confidence. Agawak offers a series of exciting and innovative programs like no other camp. Our Blue & White program is a testament to everything that is right with tradition. Your daughter will be a significant part of an old tradition dating back to 1921. We’ll challenge her to contribute to our camp program by finding a special skill, character trait or talent within your daughter and will encourage her to share this ability with her camp family. In the process she will know she is a vital member of our camp family.
WE OFFER SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE….4 DAY, 2 WEEK, ONE OF TWO 4 WEEK SESSIONS OR A FULL 7 1/2 WEEK SEASON. Our program offers campers a variety of lenghts of stay. For new campers our Rookie camps are a perfect introduction to overnight camping. Please see our dates and rates or the Rookie Camp pages for more information.
