Embarrassing moments when there was no deodorant at hand or it did not live up to expectations, happened to everyone.
It seems that within a radius of several meters, everyone smells an unpleasant smell of sweat and looks at wet armpits with condemnation. We tell you how not to find yourself in a delicate situation: to prevent the appearance of a smell, or to get rid of it as soon as possible and more effectively.
Where sweat smells from
Sweat is not as bad as people think it is. If a person stops sweating, the body will overheat very quickly. The natural mechanism of thermoregulation is triggered when we find ourselves in the sun or in a hot room, strain our muscles during physical activity, or get sick.
The brain quickly reacts to an increase in temperature and gives a command to the glands: standing out on the surface of the skin, sweat droplets evaporate, thereby reducing the intensity of passions. On average, the body releases 1 liter of fluid per day. Everyone sweats without exception – from babies to grandparents. At the same time, the amount of sweat, its chemical composition and smell change in the course of life.
Why sweat smells differently
Strictly speaking, sweat itself does not smell. Sweat washes away fats, metabolic products and secretory cell residues. They serve as food for skin bacteria, the waste products of which cause a characteristic pungent odor. Scientists even deduced a gradation for it:
- nomidrosis – a barely perceptible neutral smell;
- osmidrosis – a pungent odor that we usually associate with sweat;
- bromhidrosis is an overly pronounced unpleasant amber.
Bromhidrosis is more common in young people: not because they neglect the shower, but because of the amino acids tyrosine and leucine in sweat. In women, during certain periods of the menstrual cycle, the smell of sweat can also become sharper, and puberty and menopause make you sweat more. High temperatures, lack of ventilation, and profuse sweating create ideal conditions for bacterial growth in the armpits. The more of them, the stronger the smell. It usually takes a few hours for it to appear.

Bacteria are the root of evil in sweating.

Sweat is not the source of the unpleasant smell, but the microorganisms that feed on it. They feel best under the armpits. The secret secreted by the apocrine glands is rich in fats, enzymes and particles of dead cells.
Combined with poor ventilation and elevated temperatures, this is practically a resort for bacteria. Deodorants are designed to disrupt their plans.
The principle of operation of deodorants is antibacterial. Alcohol and / or triclosan in their composition disinfect the skin and create a film on the surface with a pH unsuitable for bacterial growth. This helps to prevent the appearance of an unpleasant odor, but does not protect against wet spots. Antiperspirants similarly prevent the growth of microorganisms, and special antibacterial series do it even 10 times better. But their main task is to reduce sweat secretion.
Aluminum and zirconium salts get down to business: they penetrate deep into the sweat channels, react with the liquid and bind it in the form of a viscous gel of protein nature – albuminate. It acts in a complex way: it reduces the activity of the glands and partially blocks their ducts. For people with hyperhidrosis, special clinical antiperspirants are produced.
