NMFA understands the needs of military families and fights tirelessly to improve their wellbeing.
For more than five decades, we have championed the key concept that military kids, spouses, and all family members serve, too.
Our work brings greater recognition that military family well-being is a key component of force readiness–not simply a thoughtful consideration.
Our policy advocacy, award-winning research and insights, along with our direct services strengthen military families’ well-being, cultivate their community of support, and empower all family members. Since the Vietnam War, NMFA has been the leading voice of military families–spouses, children, siblings, and parents–all of the people impacted by a loved one’s commitment to country, service, and sacrifice.
We advocate for policies that meet key needs, and when we identify important gaps, we stand up our own unique services to fill them–like Operation Purple Camp, which has served nearly 70,000 military kids. At the time they attended camp, 59% of children had a parent who was deployed or were deploying.
Supporting Military Kids’ Well-Being
NMFA broke new ground when we commissioned a key Rand study on the mental health of military families coping with multiple deployments. We also convened a first-of-its-kind Blue Ribbon task force of civilian and military leaders to identify intentional and impactful ways to help create ongoing community and connections for a unique population. Task force experts validated a need for Operation Purple programming and its specific approaches.
Building + Growing Community
Military kids move every 2-3 years, and since everyone’s mental well-being depends on connection, military kids aren’t set up for success. That’s where NMFA comes in. We do the research and outreach needed to understand the challenges of military kids. Then we create programs and services to address them. From building community and connection through youth summer camp programs to organizing healing retreats for families to reconnect to helping teens grow their own network of support through Bloom: Empowering the Military Teen.

NMFA advocates for and with military families, and we’ve been doing it for more than 50 years. We bring the needs of families front and center with military service branch leaders, Department of Defense, and the White House, along with Members of Congress, and other key decision makers. What a Child’s Camp Experience Means
Most military kids live in civilian communities where their peers, neighbors, teachers, health providers, and coaches have little understanding of their experience.
At Operation Purple Camp, they meet kids like them who understand what it’s like for a parent to service in the military…and make life-long friends! Campers thrive in an environment with fully trained counselors and camp staff experienced in helping children adapt and overcome the stressors of military life.
This is often one of the only touchpoints for kids who do need some extra support to connect with ongoing resources for their mental health.
Campers are encouraged to celebrate the sacrifices they make in ways that make them proud of their role as a military kid!

Purple happens to be the perfect mix of Army green, Coast Guard blue, Air Force blue, Marine Corps red, and Navy blue. In the military world, purple symbolizes all who serve, and at our Association, we know military kids serve, too!
Whether campers attend a week of camp at an in-person location, or they experience the magic of summer camp virtually, each child leaves with memories and new friends they’ll never forget.

Summer Camps for Military Kids
Summer is a great time for relaxing, but it’s also a good time for kids to have experiences that are unavailable during other times of the year. Summer camps are great opportunities for kids to make new friends, learn new skills, and build character.
These free or discounted summer camps especially for children from military families give them all this, plus the chance to connect with other military kids who are going through similar experiences and challenges.
The Air Force Reserve/Air National Guard Teen Leadership Summit is a week-long camp for 14 to 18-year-old teens who are dependents of current or retired Air Force Reserve or Air National Guard members. Teens will learn what it means to be a leader, gain self-confidence, build a sense of belonging in the community, and learn about programs available to Air Force dependents. Classes throughout the week will include learning about the mission of the AFR and ANG, environmental education, military traditions, community service projects, and musical performances.
There is also an Air Force Active Duty Teen Leadership Summit for 14 to 18-year-olds of Active Duty military who are currently assigned/living/working on an Air Force installation or Air Force-led Joint base with classes and activities geared towards leadership development and learning what it means to be part of the Air Force community.
Airfare, transportation meals at the Summit as well as camp registration fees and lodging are paid by the Air Force through their partnership with the University of Georgia/Georgia 4-H.
American Wanderer Summer Camp offers four 2-week sessions exploring America’s National Parks for kids ages 11 to 17. The mobile summer camp travels to locations in Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, and Wyoming. Summer sessions explore the Anasazi Pass, the Ute Route, the Shoshone Trail, and the Lakota Path. Sessions begin June 25 and run through August 19. Military discounts are available for children of active duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired and former service members.
The Armed Services YMCA (ASYMCA) offers children of enlisted families the opportunity to participate in family, youth, and teen camps any time of the year. There are branches and affiliates located across the United States including Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oklahoma, Florida, Kentucky, and more.
Campers will strengthen bonds with family and friends from their community, build self confidence, and learn important outdoor skills and environmental awareness. The camps are free and vary by location, so check with your local ASYMCA for more details.
Badger Youth Camp is a program offered by the Wisconsin National Guard serving campers aged 8 to 17. The low-cost weekend-long camp connects military children from all over the state, giving them to bond with other military families, enjoy a variety of activities, learn about team building, respect, loyalty, and patriotism and build their self confidence and sense of independence.
Camp Corral is a free week-long camp for kids from military families aged 8 to 15. Camp Corral is open to all military children but priority is given to children of fallen service members, or with military parents who are wounded or disabled. Campers will enjoy a week full of outdoor adventures like canoeing, swimming, fishing, and horseback riding.
There is also arts and crafts, ropes course challenges, archery, and more. Delicious meals, outdoor skills, growing new friendships and making memories that will last a lifetime are just a few of the benefits campers will enjoy at Camp Corral.
Camp Yellow Ribbon is a week-long overnight summer camp for children of military families with a parent who has been or will be deployed. Offered by Easterseals of Southeast Wisconsin, the camp gives children ages 7 to 15 the opportunity to connect with other kids with similar experiences who are also coping with separation from a loved one. Campers at Camp Yellow Ribbon will enjoy outdoor activities like fishing and swimming and will gain self confidence, long lasting memories, and new friendships.
Operation Extreme is a summer camp program for children of military families from all branches. They offer day camp and overnight camp options. Fees range from $25 to $265 and are based on rank and camp options. Operation Extreme camps are faith-based and are located in Washington state at Island Lake or Miracle Ranch.
Campers will have the opportunity to connect with other military kids who have similar circumstances while participating in a range of fun activities including paintball, dirt biking, and horseback riding. Operation Extreme Junior camps are for children in grades four through six, and Operation Extreme Teen camps are for youth in grades seven through twelve. Operation Extreme Day Camp is for campers in grades one through six.
Horses 4 Heroes is a nonprofit organization based in Las Vegas that offers recreational and instructional programs with horses to military youth and adults. The equestrian programs enrich the lives of participants by boosting confidence and morale, and teaching wellness and healthy living through safe and fun activities with horses. Horses 4 Heroes offers summer camps from June through August as well as regular programs throughout the year. While the primary location for Horses 4 Heroes is Las Vegas, they feature a list of additional equestrian facilities across the nation that are registered as affiliates that may offer similar summer camp opportunities.
Online summer camps from Microsoft are not specifically for military kids, but these free themed camps have something for all skills and interests for kids ages 6 and up. Camp themes are announced regularly and run year round.
Teen Adventure Camps are offered through Purdue University. Camps are for teens ages 14 to 18 of Active Duty, Guard, Reserve, and Retired military personnel. Current camp locations are in Colorado, Georgia, and Kentucky and and are free to low-cost. Campers will enjoy a range of outdoor activities like whitewater rafting, rock climbing, hiking, camping, backpacking, and mountain biking. Camps take place June through August.
The Minnesota National Guard camps are offered to children related to a member of the Minnesota National Guard. The week-long overnight camps are for 10 to 12-year-olds for youth camp and 13 to 15-year-olds for teen camp. Each camp session breaks campers up into groups of 25 to 30 and they work through a variety of age-appropriate scheduled activities and programs including flag ceremonies, archery, team-building exercises, military vehicle demonstrations, campouts, sports, arts and crafts, swimming, and canoeing.
Camp takes place at Camp Ripley near Little Falls, Minnesota. Campers will gain new friends, confidence, and long-lasting memories.
The National Military Family Association offers Operation Purple Camp to support military families by providing a free week of camp to children ages 7 to 17. Operation Purple Camps are specially designed to meet the needs of kids with a service member returning from deployment, preparing to deploy, or finding normalcy after an injury by teaching coping skills and having fully trained counselors and camp staff onsite with experience overcoming the stresses of military life. Kids will enjoy outdoor activities, learn wilderness survival skills, practice martial arts, and do arts and crafts while connecting with other kids who are learning to cope with similar experiences. Operation Purple camps are open to military children of all ranks and services. Ages and activities vary by camp location.
The Semper Fi Fund Kids Camp provides a week-long program for at-risk children from military families, giving them an opportunity to connect with kids with similar circumstances and a safe positive environment to talk about their experiences and challenges.
The camp gives kids the tools they need to gain self-confidence, resiliency, and leadership skills. Campers will participate in a variety of activities including wall climbing, canoeing, caving, and more. Semper Fi Fund camps are currently available in Texas, Pennsylvania, Colorado, California, and Georgia. Camp dates and activities vary by location.
The West Virginia VFW sponsors and annual youth camp for kids of military families aged 11 to 14. The camp is free for approved applicants. The week-long camp is held at Camp Dawson and has been operating since 1960. Campers at the military-style camp will learn discipline and following directions, and will participate in flag ceremonies. They will be given the chance to connect with other military kids while enjoying activities such as rock wall climbing, swimming, archery, and learning self-defense.

In the 2023 season, many military camps will be organized on the basis of children’s military-patriotic clubs, which have recently opened in almost all large settlements of Russia. To get into such a camp, the child must be a member of this club and attend it before going to the camp. Such clubs are usually supervised by law enforcement agencies or the Orthodox Church. Their goal is the formation of a healthy and educated generation that understands what honor, valor, devotion to the Fatherland are. A generation capable of sincere love and friendship, knowing and respecting the history of their country, strong and strong, able, if necessary, to defend everything that is dear to him, and, first of all, the Motherland.
If during the year in the club the guys study theory, study types of weapons, master the basics of hand-to-hand combat, visit museums of military glory and meet interesting people, then a real army routine awaits them in the camp. Strict discipline, serious physical activity, early rises, assembly and disassembly of weapons, forced marches and even shooting – this is a real test of endurance, hardening of characters and organisms.
The main types of military camps
Very often such military camps, like their base clubs, are specialized. If the curator is a division of the navy, then the camp will be organized somewhere on the sea coast, and the guys, in addition to their skills in handling weapons, will be taught to swim, help them master scuba diving and, probably, they will be allowed to control the steering wheel of a sea boat.
The paratroopers will teach them how to fight, show how to fold a parachute, and in some camps the guys will even have the opportunity to make a real jump from an airplane.
But only children with good health, good physical fitness and over 14 years old are taken to these camps.
Not only children, but also their four-legged friends can take a course at the border guards. Experienced cynologists will teach children how to manage their pets, and the dogs themselves will take a general training course, learn to follow the trail and protect their master.
In addition to the profile, military camps are divided into military-patriotic, military-sports and military-religious.
In military-patriotic camps, in addition to teaching the wisdom of the army, much attention is paid to the formation of a civic and patriotic consciousness among the younger generation, education in the spirit of respect for the history of their country, those sometimes tragic events that she had to endure and for people who managed to protect her from enemies.
Military sports camps focus on the physical development of children. It offers a healthy lifestyle, daily hard training and classes with instructors in hand-to-hand combat, orienteering, overcoming obstacles, survival in difficult conditions.
Military-religious camps are guided by the inculcation of moral and spiritual values. The children are introduced to the basics of Orthodox culture, they try to form an Orthodox attitude towards such a concept as the Motherland. Club membership is not at all a prerequisite in order to learn during the holidays what army everyday life and army routine are, to test your physical abilities and your fortitude, to cultivate self-discipline.
Military camps “for all”
There are many military camps, the doors of which are open to everyone. The guys in them are taught all the same military tricks, but at a discount for the fact that they have neither basic knowledge nor preliminary training. Some military units take patronage over children from dysfunctional families. Their camps accept so-called “difficult” teenagers, some of whom have not only managed to get registered with the police, but even commit a crime. Cut off from the street, busy from early morning until late at night, under conditions of the strictest discipline, they often begin to show a sincere interest in military affairs.
Don’t be put off by the word “military” in the name of the camp. After all, the organizers know with what contingent they have to deal. A little stricter discipline, a little more physical activity, a little harsher conditions and their own specifics, but everything else is like in a regular children’s camp. In addition to studying, training and classes, there will definitely be interesting hikes, sports matches and such exciting war games during which fatigue is forgotten, there is a desire to win and a desire to win in an honest and dignified way.
Such camps bring up not a false, but a real concept of friendship, mutual assistance, a sense of duty to the Motherland and readiness to defend one’s country, one’s Russia. This is a real chance for a child to become physically more resilient and psychologically more resistant to all those negative trends that have fallen in large numbers on our youth in recent years.
