90,000 Marquette – a visiting card of viticulture and winemaking in Vermont, USA
Bill Ward Article
The Shelburne Vineyard is one of only two wineries in Vermont that can successfully grow grapes in place of Vitis vinifera L. This winemaker Ethan Joseph Joseph is mainly focused on the cultivation of the new red technical variety Marquette, a hybrid developed just over a decade ago.The Marquette, obtained from the University of Minnesota and released as a variety in 2006, is a complex interspecific hybrid between Vitis riparia Michx., Vitis vinifera L. and the French direct sire hybrid Ravat 262 (Ravat 262). Also one of the distant relatives is the Pinot Noir variety.
In many ways, Joseph views Marquette as a grape similar to Vitis vinifera L., and the wines derived from Marquette have won several prizes in various wine competitions, including four “Best of a Group” awards at the annual International Wine Competition. obtained from grapes grown in cold climates (International Cold Climate Wine Competition). At the Cold Climate Grape Conference in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ethan Joseph shared his approach to growing and vinifying Marquette. Joseph argues that “Marquette is an excellent grape and we need to treat it as such. In terms of wine quality, this is very important for our industry. ”
Cultivation technology Marquette
Rows are oriented from north to south, forming – high-stem horizontal double-sided cordon or Guyot with a free overhang of growth, with long arms, which are often replaced. They approach pruning with great care, and also use such an agricultural technique as removing leaves in the cluster area soon after flowering. “We call this bush swim because that’s how we do it,” Joseph said, waving his arms like a swimmer. “This is a difficult task, but the benefits are enormous. You will get much better bunches, and they will have their own microclimate. ”
Marquette Pruning System “Looks more like a typical Vinifera than a hybrid. We have no options. ” While many growers emphasize the high yields of the hybrids, according to Joseph, Shelbourne’s Marquette “has been able to optimize bunch loading, heat storage and ripening. It requires a lot of labor, but it is justified in the final product. ”
According to Joseph, Marquette has a fairly large vigor of the bush, and the Shelbourne winery receives 4 to 5 tons per acre ( approx. * – 1 acre = 0.4 ha), almost twice as much as four years ago, and “With a great improvement in the quality of the grape harvest.” Usually, the Marquette in Vermont is harvested at the end of September, after 2300 SAT. According to Joseph, “we analyze berries and juice, seeds and ridges, harvesting grapes when the sugar content of the berry juice does not exceed 26.5 ° Brix, which is usually before the optimum maturity of seeds and ridges.I never got the full maturity of the ridges from Marquette. The pH is usually between 3.1 and 3.2 “.
Winemaking style from Marquette
As soon as the grapes are processed, they are immediately placed in the separator. In recent years, Joseph has said that he ships up to 10% of whole bunches (with ridges), 24 hours before the introduction of the D254 yeast. “Research shows that Marquette has good tannins in his skin,” Joseph said. “Even if the skin is not quite ripe, you will get more and better tannins.”
Joseph said he prefers a slower fermentation for the Marquette variety, keeping the temperature at an average 70 ° F. In addition to pressing, Shelburne’s staff do what they call a “sump”, which can be thought of as a modified pump: to prevent solids from passing through the pump, the bottom valve of the tank opens, allowing the wort from the tank to flow through a screen into a stainless steel bath. “The wort has to be freed of solids, then pumped back up the fermentation.”In this case, an extended maceration is used – about 35 days, and “you get softer tannins and more extract.”
There was a problem with the use of oak. “We started with American oak barrels, but we ended up with too much vanilla,” said Joseph. “We tried a hybrid – barrels made from French oak (bottom) and American oak (sides) and still got vanilla. Our newest barrels are Hungarian. We will further increase the number of new barrels to 20%, and we will be done with that. “
The winery uses lees aging and batonage ( approx. * – agitation of the wine lees during aging with a special pole (loaf)). Withstand Marquette for nine to sixteen months, once a month, the barrels are regularly checked for sulfur dioxide levels. There is no cleaning or cold stabilization.
“We test all reserve casks for richness, depth and complexity,” said Joseph. The 2012 Marquette Reserve was held for 15 months. The result is a finished wine with aromas of cherry and red liquorice, rich tones of berries and toasted vanilla beans with spices, with a multi-layered finish.( approx. * – the price for a bottle of Marquette Reserve at Shelbourne winery is $ 30)

How do we calculate the total crypto market capitalization?
We calculate the total crypto market capitalization by adding the individual capitalizations of all cryptocurrencies listed on our website.
Are all cryptocurrencies listed on CoinMarketCap.com?
No, we do not list all cryptocurrencies on CoinMarketCap. As a company and as a team, we are well aware that not all coins and projects have good intentions behind them. While it is impossible to guarantee that we will be able to weed out all unscrupulous projects, each coin goes through a careful selection process before being posted on our website. If we suspect that a coin or a project is being developed by scammers, they do not get to the site.
What is the scale of the global cryptocurrency market?
At the time of writing, according to our estimate, there are about 8,000 coins, tokens and other projects in the global crypto market. As we mentioned, we use a due diligence process that applies to all coins before they are posted on the site. This process affects how many cryptocurrencies, of the total number in the global market, are represented on CoinMarketCap.
What is Altcoin?
The very first cryptocurrency in the world was Bitcoin. Since its code is in the public domain, other developers have the opportunity to use most of the code, make minor changes, and launch their own separate cryptocurrency. And many did just that. Some cryptocurrencies are very similar to Bitcoin and have only one or two differences (for example, Litecoin), while others are radically different from it, with unique security, emission and management systems. However, they are all united by a common term – any coin issued after Bitcoin is considered an altcoin.
What is ICO?
The abbreviation ICO stands for initial coin offering. Many small, as well as some large projects in the crypto space used to secure funding for themselves by reaching out to private investors from all over the world. In this kind of crowdfunding from the crypto world, investors send funds (usually in the form of bitcoins) to the developers of the project and receive coins or tokens in return.
Most ICOs were held in 2017 and early 2018 and used Ethereum as a fundraising platform using the ERC-20 standard. In 2018, the US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) clarified its rules related to fundraising for asset financing, thereby making it much more difficult to issue tokens for new projects.Since the SEC published the new rules and showed an increased interest in regulating ICOs by US citizens, the number of these fundraising campaigns has dropped significantly.
What is stablecoin?
Price volatility has long been one of the features of the cryptocurrency market. When asset prices fall or rise frequently and sharply, and the market itself is relatively small, it can be difficult for traders to trade the way they would like it to.To solve this problem, a new type of cryptocurrency has emerged, whose value is tied to existing currencies. Their price can be pegged to the US dollar, other government currencies, or even other cryptocurrencies. These new cryptocurrencies have come to be called stablecoins, and due to their low volatility, they can be used for a variety of purposes.
Which cryptocurrency is the best to invest in?
CoinMarketCap does not provide financial or investment advice on which cryptocurrency, token or asset is a good or bad investment.
