ZONE OF SPECIAL ATTENTION – SPINE
The spine is a complex structure. The vertebrae form its basis, the intervertebral cartilage, the joints of the vertebral processes and the ligamentous apparatus fasten the vertebrae together.
The spine is:
- rigid rod that supports the torso; head and belt of the upper limbs;
- reliable support of all levers from bones and muscles;
- durable “protective case” for the spinal cord;
- flexible chain that allows the torso to bend and rotate;
- elastic spring that absorbs shocks and shocks and maintains the balance of the body.
The spine should be mobile, stable and strong enough.
He has to adapt to different living conditions: uncomfortable furniture, a car seat, working behind a counter or machine, heavy bags and bus braking during rush hour. The muscles surrounding the spine provide two opposite functions – mobility and stability. The individual mobility in each intervertebral joint is small, but the spine as a whole is quite flexible. The coordination of muscle work ensures harmonious movements of the spine. The main role in maintaining an upright posture is played by the back muscles, which straighten the spine and the iliopsoas muscles. The pressure in the chest and abdomen is very important for the stability of the spine. The abdominal muscles are just as important for maintaining posture and protecting the vertebrae from displacement and injury as the back muscles. Muscle traction develops the curves of the spine, stimulates its normal development. A well-developed muscle corset is able to protect the spine from traumatic stress.
Violation of muscle tone occurs with any malfunction in the spine. Weakness of the muscle corset, uneven muscle tone are inevitably associated with the strengthening or flattening of the physiological bends of the spine or its lateral curvature.
There is no clear line between “simple” posture disorders and diseases of the spine. The two most common “misfortunes” associated with the spine – posture disorders and osteochondrosis – are two sides of the same coin, links in the same chain.
Posture
Determination of posture: the usual posture of a naturally standing person, which he takes without undue muscle tension. In a broader sense, posture is both the position of the body in various static poses, and the peculiarities of muscle work when walking and when performing various movements. Posture depends on the shape of the spine.
In a newborn, the spine has the shape of a uniform arc. The formation of the first bend – cervical lordosis – begins after the birth of the baby, when the baby raises its head. The second bend – thoracic kyphosis – begins to form when the child sits down and crawls on all fours. When the child begins to stand and walk, a third bend is formed – lumbar lordosis, and, starting from three to four years, an arched shape of the bones of the foot is formed.
In preschool and primary school age, posture in children is unstable; with age, it continues to form and acquires individual characteristics. Poor physical development and inattention of parents to the formation of correct posture are most harmful to the child’s spine.
Posture disorders in themselves are not a disease, but they create conditions for diseases not only of the spine, but also of internal organs.Poor posture is either a manifestation of an illness or a condition of pre-illness. The main danger of postural disorders is that nothing hurts until degenerative changes in the intervertebral discs begin (osteochondrosis).
Poor posture reduces the body’s margin of safety: the heart beats in a cramped chest, a sunken chest and forward-turned shoulders prevent the lungs from expanding, and a bulging abdomen disrupts the normal position of the abdominal organs. A decrease in the physiological curves of the spine (flat back) in combination with flat feet, leads to permanent microtrauma of the brain and increased fatigue, headaches, memory and attention disorders.
Most often, poor posture is combined with poor muscle development and a reduced general tone of the body, with impaired blood supply to the brain due to improper position of the head, and poor eyesight.
Typically “childhood” diseases of the spine – juvenile kyphosis and scoliosis – are considered systemic (that is, common) diseases that are often accompanied by metabolic disorders.
Good posture
With correct posture, all parts of the body are located symmetrically relative to the spine, there are no turns of the pelvis and vertebrae in the horizontal plane and no bends of the spine or oblique position of the pelvis in the frontal, spinous processes of the vertebrae are located along the midline of the back. The projection of the center of gravity of the body in good posture is within the support area of the feet, approximately on the line connecting the front edges of the ankles.
Correct posture in a preschooler, a schoolboy, and also in a boy and a girl during puberty is different.
Normal posture of a preschooler
The chest is symmetrical, the shoulders do not protrude to the front, the shoulder blades protrude slightly backward, the abdomen protrudes forward, the legs are straightened, lumbar lordosis is outlined. The spinous processes of the vertebrae are located along the midline of the back.
Normal student posture
The shoulders are horizontal, the shoulder blades are pressed against the back (not protruding). The physiological curves of the spine are moderately expressed. The protrusion of the abdomen is reduced, but the anterior surface of the abdominal wall is located anterior to the chest. The right and left halves of the torso are symmetrical when viewed from the front and from the back. The sagittal plane divides the body into right and left halves. In this plane, flexion (forward bend) and extension (backward bend) occur.
Normal posture of boys and girls
The spinous processes are located in the midline, the legs are straightened, the shoulder girdle is lowered and at the same level. The shoulder blades are pressed to the back. The chest is symmetrical, the mammary glands in girls and the nipples in boys are symmetrical and at the same level. The waist triangles (gaps between the arms and torso) are clearly visible and symmetrical. The abdomen is flat, retracted in relation to the chest. The physiological curves of the spine are well expressed, lumbar lordosis is emphasized in girls, and thoracic kyphosis in boys.
In healthy, harmoniously developed people, youthful posture is maintained until old age.
Correct posture and typical options for its violations:
The sagittal plane divides the body into right and left halves. In this plane, flexion (forward bend) and extension (backward bend) occur.
Test for correct posture in the sagittal plane – stand with your back to the wall without a plinth. The back of the head, shoulder blades, buttocks, calf muscles and heels should touch the wall, the distance between the wall and the body in the region of the cervical and lumbar lordosis is about 2-3 fingers.
The frontal plane divides the body into front and back sides. In the frontal plane, the body bends sideways. Curvature of the spine in the frontal plane and asymmetry of the right and left parts of the body are a clear sign of pathology of the musculoskeletal system. Postural disorders in the frontal plane are often combined with an oblique position of the pelvis.
In the horizontal plane, the vertebrae rotate when the body turns. Twisting the spine in the horizontal plane is a hallmark of scoliosis.
Poor posture in the sagittal plane
Slouching. The thoracic kyphosis is enlarged, its apex is in the upper part of the thoracic region. The lumbar lordosis is smoothed. The shoulders are lowered and brought forward, the shoulder blades are not adjacent to the back (pterygoid shoulder blades).
Round back. Kyphosis is uniformly increased throughout the thoracic region, the lumbar lordosis is somewhat smoothed, the head is tilted forward, the shoulders are lowered and brought forward, the shoulder blades are not adjacent to the back. The round back is characterized by a sunken chest and flat buttocks. Due to the shortening of the pectoral muscles, the child cannot fully raise his arms up.
Round-concave back. All bends of the spine are increased, the head, neck, shoulder girdles are tilted forward, the stomach protrudes and hangs down. The knees are extended as far as possible to keep the center of gravity within the supporting surface. The muscles of the abdomen, back, hamstrings and buttocks are stretched and thinned. Due to the flabbiness of the abdominal press, the omission of the internal organs is possible.
Flat back. All bends of the spine are smoothed, lumbar lordosis is poorly expressed and displaced upward. The lower abdomen protrudes forward. The skeletal muscles are poorly developed, the muscles of the trunk and back are thinned. A flat back is a consequence of the functional inferiority of the muscles. With a flat back more often than with other posture disorders, scoliosis and other degenerative-dystrophic diseases of the spine develop. With this posture, compression fractures are more common.
Flat-concave back. The thoracic kyphosis is reduced, the lumbar lordosis is slightly increased. The pelvis is, as it were, shifted back and tilted forward, because of which the buttocks are set back, and the stomach protrudes forward and sags downward. The ribcage is narrow, the abdominal muscles are weakened.
Posture disorders in the frontal plane
They are characterized by an arcuate displacement of the line of the spinous processes of the vertebrae away from the midline of the back. Such postural abnormalities are difficult to distinguish from the early stages of scoliosis.
In contrast to scoliosis, with functional impairment of posture in the frontal plane, the curvature of the spine and the asymmetry of the right and left sides of the body disappear when the muscles are unloaded in the supine position.
The main difference between scoliosis and “simple” posture disorders in the frontal plane is the twisting of the spine around its axis. The vertebrae are located like the steps of a spiral staircase.
Everyone has a slight asymmetry of the body, but if postural disturbances in the frontal plane are noticeably pronounced, it’s time to go to the doctor.
PREVENTION OF POSTURE DISORDERS
Let’s talk about what to do so that your posture does not deteriorate and your spine remains healthy.
In the first years of a child’s life, good nutrition, massage and exercise are necessary both for health and for the normal formation of the spine. Regular visits to the doctor will promptly identify those disorders of the musculoskeletal system that appear when posture as such does not yet exist.Prevention of rickets and flat feet, hardening – at first this is enough for normal physical development
What else a child needs is from the first weeks of life. make friends with a good neurologist. More or less pronounced perinatal encephalopathy is now present in almost every newborn and often requires long-term treatment.
If the baby is relatively healthy, then until about three years old, his spine usually develops normally.A healthy child must move a lot, because of the peculiarities of the children’s nervous system and muscles, it is more difficult for him to maintain a fixed position than it is to run, jump, twirl and jump.
In a sitting or standing position, especially if it takes more than a few minutes to be in the same position, the child “sags”, the vertical load is transferred from the muscles to the ligaments and intervertebral discs, and the formation of an incorrect motor stereotype and poor posture begins. Small but regular physical activity (swimming, home exercise equipment, more outdoor games and less TV, daily exercise) are necessary conditions for the normal development of the musculoskeletal system.
Poor posture is guaranteed to almost every student without observing the basic rules. From the first day at school, the child’s spine begins to experience increased stress. Old-fashioned comfortable desks are no longer made, and schoolchildren from first to eleventh grade sit on chairs and tables designed for a fifth-grader of average height. We cannot influence the situation at school.
And how should a schoolchild’s workplace be organized at home?
- The seat depth of the chair should be slightly less than the distance from the sacrum to the popliteal fossa.
- To make sitting even more comfortable, a small soft cushion should be attached to the back of the chair at the level of the apex of the lumbar lordosis.
- The tabletop should be at the level of the solar plexus. At the same time, slightly spaced elbows freely rest on it, unloading the cervical spine from the weight of the hands, and the surface of the notebook is at the optimal distance from the eyes – 30 – 35 cm.
- Buy an expensive but comfortable chair with screws and hinges, where you can adjust the seat height, depth, and backrest inclination.
- Place a bench at such a height under your feet so that they do not dangle in the air and do not rise up.
- It is advisable to put books on the music stand at arm’s length from the eyes.
- Teach your child to sit up straight with equal support on both legs and buttocks.
- From time to time, the child must change his position. After every 30 – 45 minutes of classes, you should get up and move for 5-10 minutes.
- Make sure that the child does not develop the habit of sitting cross-legged, twisting one leg under him, removing from the table and hanging his non-working hand, sitting sideways to the table.
What else can be done to prevent postural disorders and diseases of the spine?
- Eat well
- Sleep on a flat bed with a hard base and a soft mattress, with a low, preferably special orthopedic pillow.
- After school, the student needs to lie down for at least an hour so that the muscles relax and rest.
- Do not carry a bag, even a light one, on your shoulder: you have to keep your shoulder up at all times. You cannot carry a briefcase in the same hand.
- The child needs to move more and exercise at least 20-30 minutes a day.
The most – the most important means of prevention is the development of skills for correct posture.
90,000 Seven rules of how best to carry heavy bags and suitcases – Rossiyskaya Gazeta
It’s bad that the weaker sex has to carry heavy bags.
A bag full of potatoes, cabbage and other vegetables, or a heavy suitcase can cause various back problems. However, doctors say, completely abandoning loads is even worse. From this, the muscles begin to weaken, and already less and less stress can lead to damage to the spine. And this applies not only to women, but also to men.
Omniscient statistics say: about every third inhabitant of the planet suffers today from diseases of the spine, and the associated disability has risen on a par with respiratory diseases. And it’s not so much the weight of the objects we lift.
Experts believe that the intervertebral disc in the lumbar spine is capable of withstanding a load of over four hundred kg / cm [2]. This means that a person can easily lift these very kilograms. And the spine will endure! This is proved not only by the weightlifting record holders, but also by ordinary loaders. The whole question is how to properly lift weights.
If you follow certain rules, then you can move fairly heavy things to the distances you need without threatening your back. But this, of course, provided that the person is absolutely healthy. After all, if the spine is no longer in the best shape, then under no circumstances (until you cure your back) you should not lift weights in excess of 10 kilograms. Even if you do it according to all the rules.
So what are these rules?
1 When lifting anything heavy, bend your legs, not your back. It is done like this: squat down, squeeze the object to you and, keeping your back straight, stand up. When the back is bent, the load on the intervertebral disc in the lumbar spine increases 20 times.
2 Keep the load as close to you as possible. The closer the center of gravity of the load is to the spine, the less effort is required to hold the back.
3 If you want to move some heavy object on the plane, it is better to push it than to pull it with you.
4 If you need to lift a load above your head, use a ladder or chair for this.
5 When carrying weights, it is unacceptable to bend forward or to bend backward. Having lifted the load, also avoid turning the torso, especially the upper part of it, as this is one of the common causes of “lumbago”.
6 A weighty bag, suitcase, any heavy load is not recommended to be carried in one hand. This is especially true when traveling long distances. Do not be lazy – separate the load so that you can carry it in both hands.
7 Do not carry heavy bags on your shoulder. The best solution is a bag with wheels or a backpack.
And finally, one last thing: when lifting something heavy, do not hesitate to ask someone for help.
Lie on the floor, three or four!
It would seem that you can save your back from damage by refusing to lift weights. But, as already mentioned, then the muscles begin to weaken. And the correct solution to the problem is to strengthen the muscles. And not only backs. It is important to train all muscles, especially the abdominal muscles, back muscles, hips, pelvis. Strong muscles in your thighs and arms also help keep your spine healthy.
Why, for example, is it considered especially harmful for women to lift weights? Because women have less muscle mass than men, by about half. This means that in striving for a healthy spine, you must first of all take care of a strong muscular corset.
Even with diseases of the spine, sports are not contraindicated. And for prevention, it is even useful to walk at a brisk pace, ski, jog, and ride a bicycle. The best sport for the spine is swimming. But shaping can lead to severe complications of osteochondrosis of the spine.
Advice
These exercises, if done regularly, will help strengthen your back:
Lean your shoulder blades and lower back against the wall, placing your feet about 30 cm from it.Lower your arms vertically, palms facing back. Slide down the wall slowly until your hips are parallel to the floor. Hold this position for a few seconds, then, without lifting your back from the wall, rise as slowly as possible.
Lying on the floor, press your lower back to it. Keep your legs bent. Raise one of them so that the lower leg is parallel to the floor, and make slow circular movements with this leg, the heel is tense. After ten seconds, do the same with the other leg.
Do these exercises as often as you can.
Why back hurts: protect the spine
Weak muscles and ligaments are not able to keep the spine in the correct position, evenly distributing the load on the back, which leads to curvature of the spinal column. The blood supply to the spine is impaired, especially when you are in the same position for a long time. Osteoporosis of the vertebrae gradually develops, and the cartilage loses its elasticity.
Your actions
Exercises to strengthen the muscles of the back can be performed at home, it is especially useful to teach them to children, the formation of the musculoskeletal system is in full swing.
If by the nature of your activity you are forced to sit or stand for a long time, try to change your body position as often as possible, take breaks for an elementary warm-up.
“Unroll” the chief on the horizontal bar in the office. Motivate that this inexpensive device will strengthen team spirit and increase productivity. Instead of a smoke break, hang on the bar for a few seconds, relaxing your back muscles.
This is an excellent alternative to expensive programs that are carried out in medical institutions for the treatment of the spine.Men instead of smoking can play “American”, which will increase their self-esteem and strengthen their biceps, which have lost their juicy appearance over the years of curly driving with a mouse on the table.
Important! Get down from the horizontal bar gradually, gently transferring your body weight to your legs. It is categorically impossible to jump off.
Swimming is very useful for the back. In water, the muscles of the body experience a significant dynamic load, overcoming the resistance of a dense medium (water is almost 800 times denser than air), which strengthens the muscle corset. In this case, the spine has no axial load, the body is in a horizontal position.
2. Bad habits
How do you sit while reading this article? If the back is arched, and the elbows lean heavily on the table, this is harmful to the spine. Pay attention to your gait. The habit of walking with your nose on the floor and hunched over your shoulders is not inferior in harmfulness to smoking.
Your actions
You need to sit with your back straight, straightening your shoulder blades.
It is good if the chair has a low back that you can lean on when sitting for a long time. Change the position of your legs, back, arms a little every 15-20 minutes.
You need to sit strictly in the center of the support, without falling on your side. This is especially true for those who write or draw by hand. According to a study by the New England Journal of Medicine, a significant proportion of people had back problems as soon as they stopped sitting on their wallets.
When walking, keep the correct posture. Imagine that a balloon is tied to the crown of your head, which constantly makes you proudly raise your head. Straighten your shoulders, imagine that you want to stand a few centimeters taller than your colleagues. Check your posture several times a day by walking up to a wall.
Special posture correctors are now on sale – corsets that force the back to maintain the correct position. Especially such correctors are recommended for wearing by children with a tendency to stoop, with the development of curvature of the spine.
However, these fixators must be used under medical supervision and must be combined with physiotherapy exercises. Otherwise, the immobilized muscles will weaken, which will further aggravate the situation.

Orthopedic traumatologist answers frequently asked questions
Young parents always have many questions about their child’s development. We asked the most frequently asked questions to the traumatologist-orthopedist of EuroMed Clinic Dmitry Olegovich Sagdeev.
– It is recommended to see a small child quite often to an orthopedist: a month, at three months, at six months, a year … What is the reason for this, what exactly does the orthopedist evaluate?
– The orthopedist looks at how the child’s musculoskeletal system develops during periods of active development in order to notice possible deviations in its development in time and correct them. At an early stage – a month – we do ultrasound of the hip joints so as not to miss any congenital pathology. At three to four months, we repeat the ultrasound scan for control in order to see the dynamics of joint development.
Based on the results of an ultrasound examination, the doctor may suspect violations of the formation and dynamics of the development of the hip joint.
The doctor of ultrasound diagnostics assesses the formation of the joint according to a special scale (Graf’s scale), and then the orthopedist determines whether correction is required by medical gymnastics, whether any physiotherapy is needed, etc.
The sooner deviations in the development of the child are identified, the more effective the treatment will be.
At about six months, the child begins to sit down, then he will get up, walk, and it is important to know how his hip joint is formed and, if there are violations, to have time to correct them before that moment.
Dysplasia of the hip joint is a violation of the formation of the hip joint, which in severe forms leads to the formation of subluxation or dislocation of the head of the femur.
– When dysplasia of the hip joint is detected, the wearing of orthopedic structures is usually prescribed: Frejk’s pillows, Vilensky splints, etc. They look quite frightening, and the parents are afraid that the child will be uncomfortable in them.
– The child will not experience discomfort. He still does not have a stable understanding in what position his lower limbs should be, therefore, the construction will not interfere with him.
At the same time, thanks to the effect of these structures, the child’s legs are located at a certain angle, and in this position the head of the femur is centered in the cavity, it is in the correct position, any deforming load is removed from it, which allows the joint to develop correctly. If this is not done, then a constant deforming load will be exerted on the head of the femur, which ultimately will entail subluxation and dislocation of the hip. This will already be a severe degree of hip dysplasia.
– In addition to dysplasia, ultrasound always looks at the formation of ossification nuclei in the hip joint. Why is their correct development so important to us?
– The femoral head is composed of cartilage tissue. The core of ossification is located inside the femoral head and, gradually increasing, it reinforces it from the inside and gives the structure stability under axial load.In the absence of an ossification nucleus, any axial load on the thigh leads to its deformation, as a result of which subluxation may develop and further – dislocation of the thigh. Accordingly, if the core of ossification does not develop or develops with a delay, any axial loads are strictly prohibited: you cannot stand, and even more so, you cannot walk.
– Can I sit?
– Sitting is not prohibited with a slowed rate of ossification (ossification, bone formation), provided that the roof of the acetabulum is normally formed, the head of the femur is centered. This is determined by ultrasound.
– What influences the formation of ossification nuclei, how can their development be stimulated?
– First of all, activity. Therefore, we recommend that you engage in therapeutic exercises with your child right from birth. Mom needs to do gymnastics with her child every day. Moreover, it is important that this should be a normal load, the so-called static one – when the child lies and the mother spreads his arms and legs. I categorically do not recommend the “dynamic gymnastics” that is gaining popularity now – a set of exercises in which the child is twisted, twisted, swayed, twisted by the arms and legs, etc. Such exercises contribute to overstrain of the developing musculo-ligamentous apparatus of the child, and create a high risk of injury: from sprains to dislocation with rupture of the ligaments of the joint.
From 2.5 months, a child can and even needs to visit the pool. Individual trainings in water with a trainer are very useful for the development of the musculoskeletal system, cardiovascular and respiratory systems, muscle training, and strengthening the immune system.
Massage is useful as an auxiliary procedure.
Vitamin D is also needed, it stimulates the development of bone tissue. Vitamin D is recommended to be given to almost all children under two years of age, and some even later. This issue is solved jointly by a pediatrician and an orthopedist, doctors select the dosage of the drug and the duration of its administration. In our region, there is little sunlight, which provokes a vitamin D deficiency in almost all children, which leads to rickets. In Siberia, the majority of children who do not take vitamin D have rickets to one degree or another.
If indicated, the doctor may prescribe physiotherapy: magnetotherapy, electrophoresis, applications with polymineral mud wipes. These are time-tested effective techniques.
– Doctors say that a child cannot be seated before he sits down himself, put, stimulate to an early standing, walking. What is the reason for this?
– This is due to the fact that in a small child the musculoskeletal system is still immature, and she and the central nervous system are not ready for active axial loads. If we begin to actively verticalize the child, to stimulate him to sit, stand, this can lead to deformation of the spine, disruption of the formation of joints. At the start, they should develop without axial loads, as nature has laid down. Systems, and, first of all, the central nervous system, must mature so that the signal from the brain from, so to speak, the “central computer” reaches the periphery undistorted and the response, from the periphery to the center, is also adequate. There is no need to rush. When these structures are ready, the child will sit down and crawl and get up on his own.
– What are the age norms when a child sits down, gets up?
– Indeed, there are certain norms, but one should not focus too much on them. Each child develops according to his own individual program, there is no need to adjust everyone to the same standard. To assess its development, you need to take into account many different circumstances, ranging from the characteristics of the course of pregnancy and childbirth.Timing and norms are needed, I think, more by doctors in order to adequately assess whether the child is developing correctly or not, and if there is a delay, to see it in time and help the baby.
Children begin to sit down at about six months, crawl at 7-8 months. Classical development: the child first sat down, then crawled, then begins to get up, move with support. Then, when he felt that he was ready, he breaks away from the support and takes the first independent steps. This happens when the musculoskeletal system has matured, the central nervous system and the vestibular apparatus have adapted. And all these systems have learned to work together correctly.
Some children begin to crawl before they sit down, some will get up before they crawl. It happens that the child does not crawl at all, but immediately got up and went. All these are features of individual development.
– What is wrong with such devices as a walker, allowing the child to “go” much earlier, entertaining him?
– Walkers knock down the “program” of the correct interaction between the central nervous system, the vestibular apparatus and the musculoskeletal system. In the walker, the child takes an unnatural position, he does not take a full step in them, but simply hangs, pushes off with his toes and moves in space. His brain and muscles remember this incorrect program of vertical position and movement, and subsequently, when the child tries to start walking without a walker, these incorrect settings are triggered, the wrong muscle groups that should keep him upright are turned on, and the child falls down. After the walker, it is very difficult for a child to maintain balance on his own, later it is quite difficult to correct this.
– Another problem associated with the fact that the child began to be placed before he was ready is flat feet. Right?
– Flat feet are congenital and functional (acquired).
If a child is positioned too early, he may develop an improper positioning of the foot. And often as a result, doctors diagnose planovalgus deformity of the feet. This flat-valgus placement of the feet is usually not pathological. On examination, the doctor determines whether the foot is mobile or rigid (inactive), and if the foot is mobile, it is easily brought into the correction position, then we are not talking about deformation, this is just an incorrect setting, which is corrected by therapeutic exercises, the correct distribution of loads.
All these attitudes that mothers complain about: raking in socks, seeming curvature of the limbs, is a consequence of the child’s transition from a horizontal position to a vertical one and his adaptation to upright posture. During the prenatal period of development, the fetus is tightly “packed” inside the uterus: the arms are pressed to the body, and the legs are folded in a rather unnatural way for a person – the feet are turned inward, the bones of the lower leg and thighs are also twisted inward, and the hips in the hip joints, on the contrary, turn outward as much as possible …When the baby is just learning to stand, the wrong position of the feet is imperceptible, since the turn of his legs in the hip joints and the twisting of the bones of the thighs and shins happened in opposite directions – that is, they compensated each other, and the feet stand as if straight. Then the ratio in the hip joint begins to change – the head of the femur is centered, and this happens a little faster than the change in the rotation of the shin bones. And during this period, parents notice clubfoot and begin to worry. But in fact, in most cases, this is an absolutely normal stage of development, and there is no need to panic that the child is somehow walking unevenly, putting his foot in the wrong way. Nature is smart, she has provided for the entire mechanism for the development of the lower extremities, and you should not interfere with this process. Of course, if this bothers you, then it makes sense to consult a doctor to determine whether these changes are physiological or pathological. If pathology – we treat, if physiology – there is no need to treat.
To prevent improper installation of the foot, passive therapeutic exercises, the choice of the correct orthopedic regimen are necessary.
A small child cannot yet actively fulfill the direct wishes of his parents and do gymnastics himself, therefore at this stage a passive effect is recommended: walking barefoot on uneven surfaces, on grass, on sand, on pebbles (of course, we make sure that the child is not injured, so that the surfaces are safe). As the child grows up (after about three years), we move on to active physical therapy in a playful way. For example, we run on our heels to wash, eat breakfast on tiptoes, go to the bedroom like a penguin, watch cartoons like a bear. Try to make it interesting for the child to do this, and then he will get used to it and will be happy to do the exercises himself.
Important for the correct fit of the foot and the selection of shoes. Shoes should be lightweight, with an elastic sole, an instep support – a lined arch. If the arch is laid out on the sole, no additional insoles are needed (unless prescribed by the doctor). The height of the shoe is up to the ankle (you don’t need to buy high ankle boots), so that the ankle works freely, and the short muscles of the lower leg can develop correctly – the very ones that hold the transverse and longitudinal arch of the foot.
For a child starting to walk, it is optimal that the heel and toe are closed in the shoes – this is how the toes are protected from possible injuries if the child hesitates.
– Real flat feet are treated differently?
– Yes, “real” flat feet cannot be cured by gymnastics. If this is congenital flat feet, then it is treated quite difficult and in many stages. There are many surgical techniques that the doctor selects depending on the severity of the case and its characteristics.Treatment begins with staged plaster casts. There are minimally invasive surgical aids on the tendon-ligamentous apparatus with the subsequent use of special devices – braces. There are also various surgical aids related to the intervention on the joints of the foot, aimed at correcting the ratio of the bones of the foot and eliminating planovalgus deformity.
– Why should flat feet and clubfoot be treated?
– Because these violations lead to the deformation of the entire skeleton. From the bottom up, like a snowball, there are violations. Improper support leads to improper placement of the hip, changes in the position of the pelvis, knee joints suffer, receiving an altered load. To even out the load on the knee joint, the hip begins to rotate, trying to bring out some kind of support position. The thigh unfolded, began to dislocate from the hip joint. To prevent him from dislocating, the pelvis tilted. The pelvis tilted – the angle of inclination of the spine changed. Accordingly, the spine was bent to leave the head straight. As a result: gross violations of the gait and the entire musculoskeletal system, scoliotic deformities from the spine. These conditions do not pose a threat to life, but the quality of life of a person with orthopedic problems suffers greatly.
– Another very common diagnosis that newborn babies are diagnosed with is torticollis. How serious is this pathology?
– Many children are diagnosed with neurogenic functional torticollis, often a subluxation of the first cervical vertebra (C1).Most often, this is a functional disorder that goes away on its own with our minimal intervention, and it does not pose any threat to the health of the child.
Children with functional torticollis are observed jointly by a neurologist and an orthopedist, usually corrective styling, an orthopedic pillow and a soft fixing collar are enough for this situation to be resolved without any complications.
It is important to separate functional torticollis from congenital muscle torticollis. If the latter is suspected, an ultrasound of the sternocleidomastoid muscles of the neck is performed at two months, which allows us to make the correct diagnosis with a high dose of probability. If ultrasound examination reveals any changes in the sternocleidomastoid muscle, then we begin to carry out complex treatment aimed at eliminating torticollis and restoring the functional ability of the sternocleidomastoid muscle. The treatment includes fixing the head with an orthopedic collar, physiotherapy courses are prescribed, aimed at improving muscle nutrition and restoring their structure. With unsuccessful conservative treatment, if the deformity grows, then after a year, surgical treatment of congenital muscle torticollis is performed.
If you have any doubts, questions, worries, do not be afraid to consult a doctor. Children’s orthopedist, neurologist, pediatrician – these are specialists who are always ready to answer your questions and help your baby grow up healthy.

Subluxation of the elbow joint
A very common trauma in children is the subluxation of the radial head in the elbow joint. The elbow joint connects three bones: the humerus, ulnar and radius. Ligaments exist to hold these bones together. In young children, the ligaments are very elastic, loose and can easily slip over the bone. With age, the ligaments become stronger, and sub-ligaments no longer happen so easily.
This injury happens when the child is abruptly pulled by the hand: the dad twisted it, just sharply lifted the child by the wrists (the child must be lifted, supporting by the armpits), or it even happens that the parent leads the child by the hand, the baby slips, hangs on the arm – and a subluxation occurs …
At the moment of injury, you can hear the click of the joint. Usually, with an injury, the child experiences short-term sharp pain, which goes away almost immediately. The main sign of injury is that the child stops bending the arm at the elbow – children keep the injured arm fully extended.
As soon as possible after an injury, the child should be shown to a traumatologist who will correct the subluxation and return the ligament to its place.
When should I see a traumatologist?
Children often fall, hit, and get injured in one way or another. How to determine when you can get by with a patch and iodine, and when you need to go to the emergency room?
- Any cut, puncture wound should be shown to the doctor. Do not fill the wound with brilliant green or iodine! This will add chemical burns to the cut. There is no need to apply cotton wool to an open wound – its fibers are then extremely difficult to remove from the wound. If the injury site is heavily contaminated, rinse with clean water. Then cover the wound with a clean cloth (sterile bandage, handkerchief, etc.), apply a pressure bandage and, as soon as possible, go to the emergency room. The doctor will conduct the initial surgical treatment of the wound, thoroughly clean it (you are unlikely to be able to do it so well on your own), restore the integrity of all structures and apply a bandage.
- If noticeable swelling appears at the injury site. This may indicate that this is not just a bruise, but also a fracture, dislocation or rupture of the ligaments.
- If the child has lost consciousness, even for a short time. This may indicate a traumatic brain injury, which can have serious consequences.
- If a child has vomited after an injury. Vomiting, nausea, and pallor also indicate the possibility of traumatic brain injury.
- If the child hits his head. The consequences of a head blow may not be immediately noticeable, and at the same time have very serious consequences.
- If the child has hit the belly. When struck by the stomach, damage to internal organs and internal bleeding is possible.
- If a child fell from a height (from a chair, table, etc.), fell off a bicycle, etc.It happens that outwardly it does not manifest itself in any way, but the internal organs are damaged.
- If the child is worried, he behaves in an unusual way.
In general, in case of any doubt, it is better to play it safe and see a doctor. Traumas in children – this is such a question when it is better, as they say, to overdo it than to miss it. Do not be ashamed, afraid that you distract emergency doctors or emergency room doctors over trifles. Your child’s health is the most important thing!
Caution: trampoline!
Trampoline is a very popular entertainment among modern children.Unfortunately, this fun can lead to serious problems. The most common injury that children and adolescents receive on trampolines is a compression fracture of the spine. Recently, there have been a lot of cases of compression fractures of the spines, including those who are professionally involved in trampoline sports.
There is no safe way to be on trampolines. A child, even without falling, can break the spine, since during jumping, the spine receives very large axial loads.Especially, of course, this is dangerous for children with a weak muscle corset.
90,000 Observer Notes: “Do not bend!” or “Whom do we choose?”
Press secretary of the local branch of the Pirate Party, Margarita Bashilova, both for work needs and for personal desire, spent the entire past Sunday at one of the polling stations as an observer in the elections for the mayor of the city and, especially for Novy Kaliningrad.Ru, did her best to do her best, clearly and clearly (but also without fanaticism) describe your impressions.
I went to the observers at the elections of the head of Kaliningrad on October 14 for a combination of reasons, like a couple of years ago to the census takers: firstly, it was necessary, and secondly, I was just very curious. I chose a site, took a direction from a candidate-“pirate”, prepared a passport, set off early in the morning.
At the entrance to the school that sheltered my PEC, I first come across a poster with a cheerful appeal to get to know KOIB better, then – at the stern watchman. Granny says it’s too early to vote. I say that I am an observer, I wave the direction that is tucked into my passport.
– You are on the second floor, – becomes a friendly granny; like any piece of paper on any old school watchmen, my piece of paper makes an impression on her.
Smart members of the commission greeted me warmly, they showed me everything, singled out a chair. Soon, I and two one-day colleagues from another candidate are urged to make sure that the ballot boxes are empty and not yet sealed. The clock is 8:00, but the KOIBs have a different opinion.
– We cannot seal them, – the elegant girl worries, at my request several times trying to explain why: they say, until the programmed electric circuit itself announces that it is possible to start, it is impossible to start in any way. The girl worries and turns pale over a box that says something wrong, the chairman begs the first visitor to wait. The KOIB begins to splurge on correct speeches 3 minutes later than the official voting start time.
– Let’s check the pens, – they offer me. I agree, not knowing that this mission now lies ahead of me every hour. I get up, go, chirp on the sheet with the handles tied in the booths.
– From the edge, from the edge, try, – an elegant member of the PEC persuades me. After a couple of seconds, the reason for her “greed” becomes clear: I tweet on the opposite side of the pen test protocol.
The people begin to arrive. Mostly old men: everyone is old acquaintances, they greet them cordially, call them by name and patronymic, and immediately direct them to the desired chair.Granny is given a long “footcloth” against her signature.
– Anna Ivanovna! Here, take it, study it. Then you need to check the box, but do not bend it! – a member of the PEC instructs clearly, loudly, in a teacher’s way.
Granny nods, goes into the booth, leaves it, looking in confusion at the one that gave her a very long ballot paper, which the housekeeping hands are trying to bend.
– Do not bend! Now – to the girls! – the lady from the PEC says menacingly, pointing towards the KOIBs. Granny withstands the fight with the miracle machine. With the help of oral instruction from a languishing PEC employee, who has no right to touch the ballot paper, the ballot box swallows the paper from 3-4 attempts. Granny looks at the machine in fascination. “Hello!” He suddenly revives, adding that the bulletin has been accepted for processing. Granny stands still for a while, then comes to her senses, says goodbye and leaves.
– Who to vote for? One of the grandfathers asks sincerely. The PEC member is silent.
– I don’t know a single one here! – the grandfather tries to appeal to pity. The woman explains that she has no right. Doesn’t have!
– I don’t see anything! He makes one last attempt.
– We will give you a magnifying glass! – calm him down. Everything is thought out, of course. Grandpa dejectedly goes into the booth.
***
– Who do we choose? – the woman asks affably, having received the ballot. They explain to her that the mayor, who used to be, and then he was not, and now he is again – and he is elected. She listens with emotion on her face, nods, goes into the booth.
– Do not bend! – a member of the PEC shouts after her anxiously. Before KOIB – a new introductory.
“With the text down,” says the elegant lady KOIB. The woman doesn’t understand.
– Written – down, – the girl formulates differently. The lady hangs in disbelief.
– White side up! – there is a girl. The lady nods in understanding, KOIB is defeated.
***
– Pies, cutlets, two cakes, – in the third hour of sitting, someone announces loudly to the whole hall in the interval between the languid streams of voters.
“We have everything with us, don’t need it,” someone from the weaker sex answers her smugly, listing: cheese, sausage! And here’s the bread! I forgot the bread …
Attempts to persuade the two men sitting in the commission to run for bread to a nearby store on the corner do not work.
***
– Let her vote! She has a passport, just far away, her grandson! What kind of people are you ?! You know her very well, – a woman over 60 is wailing, defending her friend.
No one politely listens to her.
– Yes, I, I vouch for her! She mutters in a muffled tone, pulling back the curtain.
And it doesn’t help. The friend leaves dejectedly. No one is to blame, but we somehow feel uncomfortable.
***
– Do not bend! – several members of the PEC almost howl in a chorus of chorus to those to whom the ballots were handed over.
We look at each other, laughing, with a colleague-observer: “In my opinion, a banner should have been prepared.”
– Text down, don’t push! – also, almost in unison, report the guards of the KOIBs.
Looks like more than one banner is needed.
***
– Girl! Young woman! – I do not immediately understand that it is a lady who is standing behind a translucent tricolor curtain, who is sitting next to the booth. – Check the box? I ask, put a tick?
– Well, you can cross, – I peacefully give her the right to choose.
– Yes, even a zero, – the smart guard of one of the KOIBs thoughtfully notes.
***
– Oh, hello! What are you without your grandfather? Where did you forget your grandfather? – the keeper of ballots, sitting on a chair, greets a neat elderly voter.Granny straightens her beret and suddenly starts crying.
“Died,” she says shortly, for some reason nodding her head.
– You also came to the presidential ones together … Sorry, sorry, – a member of the PEC mutters, leafing through the magazine …
***
– Do not bend! – traditionally instruct the next voter.
The brave little man takes the ballot, examines it. Resolutely bends it in half, carefully stroking it in the hall.
– Do not bend! – the lady shouts louder with horror in her eyes.
The peasant, looking not at her, folds it up again.
– No! Do not bend!
– What are you to me! “Do not bend!” I’ll take it home: I want it and bend it! – gets up resolutely, puts the paper in his pocket and leaves.
– Svetlana! Carried away! – the woman shouts in the direction of the presiding ones, mournfully adding to the table neighbor: she has the right, she has.
***
– No, I don’t see anyone! Nobody, – the elderly lady mutters, looking at the photos of candidates at the entrance.
“I had to put on glasses,” the younger man says gloatingly from behind her.
She indignantly remarks that her eyesight is excellent, but still does not see.
– I don’t see worthy ones, I tell you! She says desperately.
At the end of the corridor, on a stool, a hunched-over granny is slowly eating an inexpensive school cutlet. From the voting hall the choral “Don’t bend-but-but-at!” Is heard, and the traditional “Let’s check the pens …” is heard over the ear.

90,000 Weak hind legs in a dog – what to do?
Contents of article
Almost every owner dreams that his puppy and adult four-legged pet would be healthy and happy. And noticing that the dear barking member of the family begins to drag its hind legs, walks unsteadily or trembles, the owner begins to panic and does not know what to do.You should not try to diagnose your dog on your own; it is best to seek help from a veterinarian.
Of course, it is best to know in advance what can lead to impaired motor function in a dog. Yes, this knowledge cannot protect the animal, but it can help the owner notice in time that something is wrong with the pet. And if this puppy is sick, then the treatment started on time will help make the baby’s future life easier.
Causes of weakness of the hind legs in a dog
- Destruction or damage / displacement of the intervertebral discs. Most often, Pekingese, pugs, bulldogs (both French and British), dachshunds, poodles suffer from these diseases. Damage / displacement / destruction of the intervertebral disc is life-threatening, as the spinal cord is compressed and injured.
- Diseases of the hip joints are most often recorded in large breed dogs (for example, Rottweiler, Alabai, Caucasian, German Shepherd and others). Moreover, a puppy often suffers (at the age of four months to a year), less often an adult animal. In addition, almost always we are talking about acquired diseases, it is extremely rare that the pathology is congenital.
What can contribute to damage to the hip joints in a dog? This is overweight (especially often unbalanced or overfeeding is to blame, more precisely, obvious overfeeding, lack of physical activity), and slippery floors (when the animal’s legs are constantly moving apart), and heredity, and infectious diseases, and injuries.
Yes, and too active training of a dog (especially if it is a puppy) will not lead to good, if its musculoskeletal system has not yet fully developed. Jumping from a height, over barriers, running long distances on poor surfaces – all this will cause irreparable damage to the joints.
- Another reason for the weakness of the hind legs in a dog of any breed (be it a dachshund or a mastiff) can be myositis – an inflammation of muscle tissue. It develops after heavy physical exertion, but not immediately, but the next day. In addition, adult animals most often suffer from myositis.
- Damage to the brain can also affect the firmness of the animal’s gait. These are both tumors and vascular pathologies (which, by the way, are registered much more often than neoplasms). Even the most experienced doctor will not make an accurate diagnosis without additional examinations at the veterinary clinic.
- Injuries. Spinal bruises (and more serious injuries) can cause the puppy and adult dog to stagger and stagger their legs. Therefore, if a puppy falls, was hit, or hit by a car, immediately go to the clinic, without waiting for the appearance of clinical signs. Sometimes, due to shock, symptoms do not appear immediately.
Symptoms of weakness of the hind legs in a dog
- If the reason that the dog (no matter whether an adult pet or a puppy) has weak hind legs is due to damage to the intervertebral discs (including compression of the spinal cord), then the animal shows “bright” signs of severe pain. Therefore, the dog spends almost all the time in one position (hunched over, but stretching its neck), because any movement causes acute pain.Trembling, shortness of breath are noticeable, the dog’s hind legs give way (it is noticeable that the pet “uses” only the front paws to the full, cannot jump onto the sofa). With slight squeezing of the brain, the symptoms are not so pronounced, but it is still noticeable that the four-legged friend is not able to live a full life (even bending over to the bowl is hard).
- If in a puppy or adult dog weakness of the hind legs is noted in the morning (or immediately after rest), and after some time after walking it disappears, then most likely the pet has problems with the hip joints. And this is not always dysplasia, as the owners think. In addition, both joints are extremely rarely affected at the same time, so the puppy limps only on one leg. As soon as you notice something like this with your pet, do not delay a visit to the veterinarian.
- With myositis, the animal develops not just weakness of the hind legs, the dog moves as if on stilts. If you notice that your pet’s gait has changed, be sure to contact a specialist!
Treatment of a dog with hind leg weakness
The main rule – never start treating a puppy and an adult dog on your own, without consulting a veterinarian! Such self-medication can kill an animal.Especially if you decide to use “human” medicines, and even make the diagnosis yourself.
Therefore, if you see that your German shepherd puppy, for example, or Alabai, or terrier (yes, no matter what breed) suddenly begins to “own” the hind limbs worse, then the first thing you should do is go to the veterinary clinic.
Not on the forums to ask for advice on what to give to the dog, not to ask the neighbors what could be with the pet, but to run to the doctor! He will already prescribe additional examinations (ultrasound, x-rays, blood tests and others), based on the results of which a diagnosis will be made. And only after that treatment should be prescribed.
Only drug therapy is not always effective. Agree, if the puppy has congenital joint pathology, then the use of drugs will only make the animal feel better, “remove” the symptoms, but the problem will not disappear. The same can be said about the displacement of the intervertebral discs, hernia. Therefore, it is better for the veterinarian to decide what to do in a given situation, but the owner is required to comply with all the recommendations of a specialist.
Some owners decide that if they gave the animal a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, then the dog recovered, because it got better. But this should not be done, because this “relief” is temporary, and very quickly everything will return to normal for a puppy or an adult dog. Trust your veterinarian to find an effective treatment regimen that will put on the paws of both a shepherd puppy and an adult Pekingese.

90,000 A guy with a prosthesis showed in the video how he moves his fingers
A young man with a disability showed how his bionic prosthesis works. The guy is able not only to bend a mechanical arm, but also to mentally regulate the force of movement, and now people cannot realize two things: what progress has reached and what the human brain is capable of.
Henrik Cox suffers from a congenital disease: one of the young man’s arms has not fully developed. But the unusual detail of his appearance does not at all prevent the young man from filming popular videos for TikTok: in his henrikcox account, the guy talks, for example, about how to cut his nails or play video games.
Henrik was born with aplasia of one of the upper limbs
Netizens ask the young man a huge number of questions, and most of them concern the bionic prosthesis that replaces Henrik’s missing arm. On November 15, Cox replied to one of the subscribers and said that he can easily bend and unbend the fingers of the prosthesis, while the delay between the signal from the brain and the movement itself is minimal, and the sensations are as natural as possible.
Henrik demonstrates the capabilities of the prosthesis
Although, of course, the prosthesis cannot be compared with the movement of a real hand.
The movements are not as fast as my normal hand, explained Henrik.
According to the young man, the owner of the prosthesis can regulate the force of movement by sending a more or less weak signal from the brain, and then a swift or, conversely, a smoother gesture is obtained.

The guy’s
followers were amazed not only by the capabilities of the hand (some even compared the young man to Darth Vader), but also by the fact that the brain signals can be both weak and strong.
IT’S ALL OVER, ANAKIN! I STAND ABOVE YOU!
I can’t wait to see new improvements and innovations in this area. It’s all so exciting!
It is amazing that there are “weak” and “strong” brain signals.
Commentators with knowledge of neurophysiology explained this phenomenon.
The brain signals are always the same in “strength” (about 55 millivolts), but the speed of arousal makes the sensory experience more or less intense.
Yes! Although all neurons fire with the same strength, the more neurons are fired, the stronger the signal!
The hand of a US resident also did not fully develop, but the girl learned to turn it into a plus.
