In our technology heavy culture, face-to-face interactions are become the exception. This article (NY Times) articulates how just a couple days away from screens at camp help children connect to each other.
This summer, 10 million children are enjoying time at camp — half at one of the more than 2,400 accredited by the American Camp Association.
Parents spend a lot of time trying to motivate kids. We use chore charts, checklists, reminders and rewards to get them to feed the dog, clean their rooms and complete schoolwork. But these techniques don’t change behavior long-term. Real motivation must come from within.
Kids learn to make decisions at camp. Camp experiences grow confidence and develop good decision making skills — especially when times are tough. He also learns who to accept guidance from, in a world that’s filled with some pretty bad advice on TV, in movies and among some friends.
Some six million children in the United States are preparing psychologically to go away to sleepaway camp. Whether these departing children are camp veterans or nervous rookies, they are mentally rehearsing being away from mom and dad, their comfortable beds, their pets, favorite meals and, of course, their beloved iPhones, Facebook and video games.

150 years of children’s camps in America
You’ve probably heard of Scouts, haven’t you? It’s kind of like these guys with ties like the pioneers, with their charter and songs. They walk in large groups through European and American cities and forests, looking for something, scouting and orienting themselves on the ground. It is generally accepted that the first Scouts appeared in England at the beginning of the 20th century, but in fact the original American camps are essentially identical to the Scouts, only they were not called that.
The camp movement in the USA originated in the middle of the 19th century and had little resemblance to the current tradition of visiting schools for children. Then a couple from Washington decided to gather groups of boys and take them on two-week trips: teach them to fish, navigate the terrain, and cook their own food.
Of course, there were also private camps, where only children from wealthy families could come, but by the beginning of the 20th century, the camp movement had become so popular and grown so much that it became accessible to all children.
And in England at that time, the military leader Robert Baden-Powell, studying materials from ancient works to the history of the British and Irish peoples, came up with an intelligence school for boys. He created a network of boys who volunteered to help his army in South Africa. They scouted information about the positions of the enemy and reported to the British military. Returning to England, he founded a whole movement of Scouts. It was then that the camps were needed, which were an excellent platform for teaching young men the basics of intelligence.
A few years later the Scouting movement reached America. Just a summer vacation with fishing and hiking began to take on a military bias and the scout camps looked more like serving in the army. In 1910, the “American Camping Association” was formed, under the original name of the Camp Directors Association of America. Its founder was Alan Williams, who laid the standards for an organized camp for children and youth. By the mid-1930s, there were more than three hundred such camps for boys and girls in the United States.
Scouting life is best described by the works of the French artist Pierre Joubert, who himself joined the scouting movement at the age of 14. In his paintings, young men in uniform sleep in tents, raft in kayaks, make fires, and help put out fires.
Still, “Marabou” bears little resemblance to a scout camp. The project, which is more reminiscent of a modern camp with lectures, master classes and immersion in science, also appeared in the USA, in Philadelphia. There, the concept of a visiting school was invented: during the holidays, parents could send their children to a house located in a park area, where they were fed, provided with housing and held joint classes.
Science camps are the most common in America today. And for every taste: astronomy, chemistry, linguistics, history, whatever. In the USA, there are now camps of absolutely any orientation, you should not think that you can only learn English there. There is even a camp in which, throughout the entire shift, the life of different typical American cities is reconstructed daily at different times.
In American camps, housing and space where children come are treated with trepidation, observing all requirements and norms. Back at 19In 1948, the American Camp Association approved the Standards, following which you can obtain a license to conduct a children’s camp.
Usually there are wooden houses in the camp where children and teachers-guides live, and nearby there are tents and tents where everyone spends time, gathers for dinners and master classes.
There is a whole network of places and programs built and designed specifically for camps in nature and intended for the life of children – Nature’s Classroom. It was created back in 1973 and has grown to fourteen locations in the northeastern United States.
Nature’s Classroom, which will host the Marabou summer session, is located in Charleston, Massachusetts. Set on a hilltop surrounded by forests and fields, the complex includes spacious accommodations, a dining room, workshop spaces and outdoor exercise areas.
The most interesting thing is that one of the local lakes is located right on the territory of the camp. Those who come there are always told about how more than three centuries ago the Indians traveled through these places in their canoes.
