Definitely worth a try! First time coming here think of fondue cooking but with soup! Also great variety of bubble tea.
Karaoke room upstairs is $60 an hour, complete with couches, snacks and hours of Chinese and English songs! They’ll bring you an ice bucket of beer and you pay for what you drink!
The veg dish comes with egg and fish cake but you can order pure veg and they will give you extra veggies. The king mushroom and lotus root are awesome
Bubble Tea Heaven! Great hot pot joint that is open to 10pm (Monday to Thursday). Open til 11pm on Friday-Saturday.
The kim chi broth is a fave of mine, but they’re all good. Take note: you only really need one meat per 2 people, and maybe one other vegetable item. It’s a _lot_ of food, no matter what.
Free ice cream for dessert! Spend over $50 and get free moon cakes! Amazing bubble tea! Best restaurant in town! So incredibly cool!
Loved the jasmine green milk bubble tea. Lactose intolerant people fear not, it’s not real milk, I asked !

Read online “The Name of the Rose”, Umberto Eco – Litres, page 5
“Voluptuousness?”
“Voluptuousness. There was something… of a woman, and therefore of the devil in this young man who died. Eyes like those of a girl who lusts for intercourse with an incubus. In addition, there is pride, the pride of the mind; here, in this monastery, where everything is subordinated to the worship of the word, boasting of imaginary wisdom…”
“If you know something, tell me.”
“No, I don’t know. I don’t have facts. But there are things that you feel with your heart. Ask your heart, listen to faces, do not listen to speeches … But, by the way, we have been talking about gloomy things for so long, we have completely tortured our young friend. He looked at me with his blue eyes, raised his hand and touched my cheek with long white fingers. I instinctively jerked my head, but restrained myself in time, and did the right thing, because I could offend the old man, while his motives were pure. “Tell me about yourself,” he turned to Wilhelm. – What did you do all this time? Passed…”
“Eighteen years old. I returned to my lands. Studied again at Oxford. I studied nature…”
“Nature is good, since it is the offspring of the Lord,” said Ubertin.
Beat Liebansky (730-800). Homilies for the Apocalypse
Spain. 1220–1235
Rochester Bible
England, Rochester. Second quarter of the 12th century
“The Lord must be kind, since he gave birth to nature,” Wilhelm smiled. – I worked hard, met with scientists. Then he met Marsilius. I was attracted by his considerations about power, about the people, his draft of new legislation for all the states of the earth; and so I joined a group of members of our order – advisers to the emperor. But you know all this from my letters. I was just happy when Bobbio told me that you were here. We were afraid that we had lost you … And now, since you are with us, you will be able to help us a lot in a few days, when Mikhail appears. The fight will be strong.”
“There is little I can add to what I said five years ago in Avignon. Who will be with Michael?
“Several men from the Perugian chapter, Arnald of Aquitaine, Hugo Newcastle…”
“Who?” asked Ubertino.
“Hugon from Novokastro. I’m sorry, I can’t get rid of my mother tongue, even when I try to speak correct Latin. Then William Alnwick. Of the Avignon Franciscans, the people you can count on are the fool Hieronymus Caffa and, probably, Berengar Talloni and Bonagratius of Bergamo.
“It’s all God’s will,” said Ubertin. “These last ones are not too eager to quarrel with the pope. And who will defend the positions of the curia – I mean, from the hard-hearted?
“Judging by the letters I have, Lavrenty Decoalcon will come.”
“A harmful person”.
“John d’Anno…”
“This cunning in theology, keep in mind. ”
“We’ll keep that in mind. And finally, John de Beaune.
“Immediately will grapple with Berengar Talloni.”
“Yes, I think we’ll have some fun,” the teacher answered in an excellent mood. Ubertino looked at him with a smile of astonishment.
“I can’t tell when you Englishmen are serious. I don’t see anything fun about this. The question of the existence of the Order is being resolved. Your order, Wilhelm, and in the depths of my soul still mine … And yet I decided to beg Michael not to go to Avignon. John is suspiciously insistent – he beckons him, asks, invites. You can’t trust this mean Frenchman. O Lord Most Holy, into whose hands your church fell! And he turned to the altar. – She became a harlot, softened in luxury, warmed herself in lust, like a snake in heat! From the holy nakedness of the Bethlehem manger, from the purity of the cross tree – lignum vitae – to the orgy of gold and stones, have you seen, and everything is the same here, have you seen the portal? Where to go from the arrogant splendor of these images? And finally, the antichrist dates are approaching, and I’m afraid, Wilhelm! – And he looked around, looking with wide eyes into the depths of the dark naves, as if the Antichrist could appear from there any minute, and I involuntarily felt that I myself was preparing for this meeting. – His deputies appeared, sent to them, as Christ sent the apostles around the world! And they trample on the City of God, and deceive with their charms, hypocrisy and rape. It was the turn of the Lord to send his servants Elijah and Enoch, whom he placed while still alive in his earthly paradise, so that they would come and dispel the power of the Antichrist. And they will come to prophesy in robes of repentance and will preach repentance by word and example…”

“They’re already here, Ubertin,” Wilhelm said, pointing to his Franciscan cassock.
“But they have not won yet, and at a certain hour the Antichrist, in his rage, orders to kill both Enoch and Elijah, so that everyone could see their corpses and, seeing, would be afraid to repeat their example. So they almost killed me…”
Then I was horrified, thinking that Ubertin was seized with some kind of divine fever, and I feared for his mind. Now, when years have passed and I know what I know, namely, that a few years later he was killed in a certain German city under unclear circumstances and it was never found out by whom, I again freeze with horror, as I see that Ubertino prophesied that evening.
“You know, Abbot Joachim told the truth. We have come to the sixth era of the history of mankind, and now two Antichrists, the mystical and the true, will appear, and this will happen now, in the sixth era, after Francis was, who transubstantiated in his body the five stigmata of the crucified Jesus. Boniface was the mystical Antichrist, the denial of Celestine is invalid, Boniface is the beast coming out of the sea, whose seven heads are seven insults to mortal sins, and ten horns, this is the blasphemy of the ten commandments, and the cardinals who helped him, this is the locust, and in the flesh he is Apollo ! The number of the beast, if you count it in Greek letters, is Benedict! He looked to see if I understood well and raised a warning finger. – Benedict XI was the true Antichrist, the beast ascending from the earth! And the Lord allowed this degenerate, the embodiment of vice and immorality, to rule the holy church! Just so that the merits of his successor would dazzle the world!”
“But holy father,” I murmured, plucking up my courage, “his successor is John!”
Ubertin passed his hand over his forehead, as if driving away a traitorous dream. He was panting, looking dully. “That’s it. We miscalculated. An angelic dad is still expected. But Francis and Dominic came. – He turned his eyes up and read in a singsong voice, like a prayer (however, I was sure that he was reading some page from his great book on the tree of the cross): – The first one revealed, uttered by seraphic count, wounded by the heat of heaven, burned with fire … Following coming to him, carrying the word of true holiness, poured light into the world … Yes, these were the omens, and the angelic pope should come.
“So be it, Ubertino,” replied Wilhelm. “And I am obliged to take care that the ruler of the earth is not driven out for the time being. Brother Dolchin also spoke about the angelic father…”
“Don’t remember this serpent! howled Ubertino, and for the first time I saw how he was changing, from blissful to violent. – He defiled the teachings of Joachim of Calabria, turned them into dirt, fraught with death! The real servant of the Antichrist, the most that neither is! And you, Wilhelm, are saying all this because you don’t really believe in the coming of the Antichrist, it was your Oxford mentors who taught you to deify your mind, drying up the prophetic gift in your heart!”
“You are mistaken, Ubertin,” Wilhelm answered very seriously. “You know, of all the teachers, the most revered by me is Rogier Bacon…”
“He liked to talk about flying machines,” Ubertin put in caustically.
“Warning us quite clearly and clearly about the Antichrist, whose portents he found in the corruption of morals and the decline of sciences. But Rohyr taught that there is only one way to strengthen oneself in the face of the coming of the enemy: to study the secrets of nature, to acquire knowledge for the sake of correcting mankind. You can prepare for the coming of the Antichrist by studying the healing virtues of herbs, the properties of stones, even inventing flying devices that will make you laugh.”
“To your Bacon, the Antichrist is only a pretext to nurture the pride of reason.”
“Holy excuse”.
“What needs an excuse is not holy. Wilhelm, you know how much I love you. You know how much I rely on you. Tame your mind, learn to mourn the plagues and torments of the Lord! Throw away the books!
“I’ll throw everything away except yours,” Wilhelm smiled in response. Ubertino also chuckled and shook his finger. “Stupid Englishman. Don’t laugh too much at your own kind. Above those whom you cannot love, also do not laugh: it is better to be afraid of them. And be careful in this abbey. I don’t like it. ”
“Yeah, I was just about to get a better look at it,” Wilhelm replied, heading out. Let’s go, Adson.
“I say: it’s dangerous here, and you’re going to look… Oh, Wilhelm!” Ubertino called after him, shaking his head disapprovingly.
“By the way,” Wilhelm added from the middle of the nave, “what kind of monk is this: he looks like an animal and speaks Babylonian?”
Salvator? Ubertino turned around, already on his knees. “He is, one might say, my gift to this monastery. Just like the cellar. Parting with the Franciscan cassock, I briefly visited my former monastery in Casale, where at that time several monks found themselves in an unpleasant situation: the brethren suspected that they were spiritualists from my sect. That’s how they put it anyway. I tried to protect the monks and obtained permission for them to follow my example. Last year I come here and see two of them: Salvatore and Remigius. Salvator… He really looks like a beast. But helpful.”
Wilhelm hesitated and said: “I heard from him ‘repent all’…”
Ubertin remained silent. Then he waved his hand, driving away the annoying thought: “No, it’s unlikely. You know these worldly brothers. Dark villager. They have heard enough of some wandering preacher and repeat without a clue. Salvatore has something to reproach. He is a greedy, lustful creature. But in terms of reliability beyond suspicion. No, Wilhelm, the trouble with this monastery lies elsewhere: not with those who know nothing, but with those who know too much. Search among them. And do not build a fortress of suspicion on the word you hear.”
“It’s not my style,” replied Wilhelm, “I left the inquisitors as well so as not to do this. But in general, I’m interested in listening to the words. And think about them.”
“You think too much. Young man,” Ubertino turned to me, “do not imitate the teacher in a bad example. The only thing worth thinking about, as I found out towards the end of my life, is death. In death, peace is ready for us, the completion of all labors. Let me pray.”
First day
Before the ninth hour,
where Wilhelm is having a most learned dialogue with the herbalist Severin
We crossed the central nave again and went out from under the portal to the street. Everything that Ubertino said, everything he said, still rumbled in my head.
“He’s such a man… Strange…” I dared to remark to Wilhelm.
“He is in many respects a great man – in any case, he was… That’s why it’s strange. Only small people seem perfectly normal. Ubertino might have been one of those heretics he burned at the stake. Or he could have been a cardinal of the most holy Roman church. And he was, mind you, within a hair’s breadth of both perversions. When I talk to Ubertino, it seems to me that hell is heaven seen from the other side.
I didn’t understand what he was trying to say, so I asked, “Which side?”
“That’s the point,” Wilhelm shook his head sadly. – First of all, it is required to establish whether the parties exist and whether the whole exists … Don’t listen to me. And don’t look at this portal anymore,” he added, accompanying the last words with a light slap on the back of the head, for I twisted my neck with all my might, unable to tear myself away from the sculptures that struck me at the entrance. “You’ve been scared enough for today. All who could.”
Returning my head to its natural position, I saw a new monk in front of me. This one was the same age as Wilhelm. He greeted him with a smile and introduced himself: Severin of Sant’Emmerano, the monastery’s herbalist, in charge of the baths, the hospital, and the garden. And if an escort for the monastery economy is pleasing to us, he is at our service.
Wilhelm said thank you and added that at the entrance to the abbey he noticed beautiful beds, occupied, apparently, not only for edible, but also for medicinal plants – as far as he could see under the snow.
“In summer or spring, when every herb is adorned with a unique inflorescence, this garden of wondrous variety glorifies the Creator much more loudly,” Severin replied in a contrite voice. “But even at this time of the year, the eye of a connoisseur of dry branches sees what is growing, and is convinced that this garden is richer than any herbarium, and more colorful than the best miniatures in them. And besides, various good cereals grow in winter, while others I plant in pots and keep in the laboratory. Oxalis rhizomes should be in abundance – they help from catarrhs, and a decoction of sage roots goes to poultices from skin diseases; lapushnik removes eczema, ground and grated shoots of the serpentine, or throat, are good for diarrhea and female ailments; wild oats – an excellent digestive remedy, coltsfoot heals the throat; we grow excellent gentian for digestion, and glycyris, and juniper – we cook juniper infusion. From the bark of elderberry we prepare a hepatic broth. Soapweed – its roots are crushed in cold water, it helps against inflammation. In addition, we grow valerian, the good properties of which you know.
“Different herbs require different climates. How do you manage to…”
“On the one hand, I have to give thanks to the Lord every day, who placed our lands on the crest of the mountains so that the crops on the southern slope, facing the sea, receive a lot of warm air, and those on the northern slope, they look at a higher wooded mountain, which covers them and waters them with woody balms. On the other hand, I am indebted to the tricks of art, which I was honored, unworthy, from good teachers. For some herbs grow even in uncomfortable climates, if the soil is well prepared, properly fed and cared for.
“Are there herbs that are only eaten?” I asked.
“My dear hungry foal, remember that there are no edible plants that are not used for healing. It is important to observe the measure. They get sick from abuse. Take a pumpkin. She is from the wet and cold elements, quenches thirst. But if you overeat, there will be diarrhea, and you will have to squeeze the intestines with mustard, pounded with brine. And the bulbs? Consisting of warm and moist elements, they indulge in intercourse… Of course, this is for those who are not bound by our vows. Onions weigh our heads, with which we fight with milk and vinegar. These are the reasons, – the monk slyly added, – it is better for a young monk to limit himself in the bow. Eat garlic. Dry and hot, it will protect against poisons. But do not overdo it, because this vegetable sucks a lot of humors out of the brain. Beans expel urine and increase fullness, both of which are great for health. Although beans cause bad dreams… But not as dangerous as other herbs that cause sleepy dope…”
“What are these herbs?” I asked.
“Ha, ha, our little novice is too curious. No, only the herbalist is allowed to touch this. Otherwise, everyone will be able to cause visions and fool people with potions.
“Yes, it is enough to chew nettle seed, passionflower or oilseed to protect yourself from the power of sleepy herbs. I suppose the abbey grows these essential crops as well?” Wilhelm said.
Severin looked sideways at him. “Are you into herbarology?”
“Very little,” Wilhelm replied modestly. – I have read several disparate books… “The Theater of Healing” by Abubkhasim Baldakhsky…”
“Baldakh Abul Gasan al Mukhtar ibn Botlan”.
“He is, if you like, Ellukasim Elimittar. I wonder if a specimen will be found here…”
“It will be found, and excellent. With many wonderful drawings.

“Praise be to heaven. And the Virtues of Herbs by Platearia?
“This is also there. And also Aristotle’s “On the Past” and “On the Vegetable” in the translation of Alfred Sareshelsky.
“I heard that it was not really Aristotle,” Wilhelm remarked. “Just as, apparently, Aristotle does not own On Causes.”
“In any case, this is a great book,” answered Severin, and the teacher confirmed it with vehemence, without even knowing what kind of work the statement refers to – “On the vegetable” or “On the causes.” For the first time I heard about both the first and the second, but from their conversation I concluded that both works should be known and respected.
“I will be incredibly glad,” said Severin, “to talk to you about the properties of herbs sometime later. It will be useful for me.”
“And it’s even more useful for me,” Wilhelm said, “but we will break the rule of silence – the main thing in the charter of the order . ..”
“The charter,” replied Severin, “was interpreted differently in different eras and in different communities. Initially, the charter prescribed us only charitable reading and did not encourage study. And meanwhile, you know how the study of sacred and secular sciences later flourished in the order. Further. The charter requires a shared bedroom. However, we believe that monks should be able to concentrate at night as well. Therefore, each has a special cell. The rule of silence is understood strictly. With us, not only monks engaged in manual work, but also those who write or read, are deprived of the right to talk with their brothers. But since the abbey is first and foremost a community of scholars, it is useful for the monks to share their accumulated treasures of knowledge. Therefore, a conversation that promotes the study of subjects is considered legitimate and useful. Unless it is conducted in the refectory and not during prayer departures.
“Did you often talk to Adelmo of Otranto?” Wilhelm suddenly asked.
Severin did not appear to be surprised at all. “So the Abbot has already told,” he said. – No. I didn’t talk to him often. He was busy with miniatures. But I heard him talking to other monks, Venantius of Salvemec and Jorge of Burgos, about work. I spend whole days not in the scriptorium, but at my place, ”and pointed to the building of the hospital.
“So,” Wilhelm said. “So you don’t know if Adelmo had visions.”
“Visions?”
“Visions that happen, for example, from your herbs.”
Severin spoke with a stone ear: “I said that dangerous potions are under guard.”
“That’s not the point,” Wilhelm continued. “I’m asking about visions.”
“I don’t understand the question,” Severin replied stubbornly.
“I thought that a monk wandering around Khramina at night… And there, by the Abbot’s assumption, things might happen… destructive for those who come at the forbidden hour… so I say that I thought: didn’t he have diabolical visions who threw him into the abyss?”
“I already said that I don’t go to the scriptorium, only if I need some books. But I keep most of the herbariums at the hospital. And I have already said that Adelmo was very close with Jorge, with Venantius… and… of course, with Berengar…” And why of course?
“Berengar of Arundel – assistant librarian. Well, they are the same age, listened together … and, in my opinion, it is natural that they had topics for conversation. That’s what I meant”.
“So you meant it,” Wilhelm repeated. I was surprised that he did not ask further questions. Moreover, he abruptly changed the conversation. “You should visit Khramina. Are you escorting us?”
“Willingly,” answered Severin with visible, too visible relief. And he led us around the gardens to the western facade of Khramina.
“There is a direct entrance to the kitchen from the kitchen gardens,” he explained. – However, the kitchen occupies only the western half of the first floor, in the other half – the refectory. And from the southern doors, to which the path around the church choir leads, you can immediately get into the kitchen and the refectory. But we will go here: there is an inner door from the kitchen to the refectory.”
Entering the spacious kitchen, I immediately noticed that in the middle of the whole building, from the first to the last floor, there is an octagonal well, forming an octagonal courtyard at the very bottom; as I understood later, there were no passages to this well, and on each floor the same high windows were pierced as in the outer walls of the Temple. The kitchen was a huge cluttered space, where a dozen servants were already bustling here and there, laying out dishes for the supper. Two men on a huge table were peeling greens to season barley, oatmeal, and rye porridge, crumbling turnips, lettuce, radishes, and carrots. Beside them, another cook was busy with fish boiled in diluted wine; he smeared them with a sauce of sage, parsley and thyme, garlic, pepper and salt.
A huge hearth at the far wall of the western tower was blazing with reddish fire. In the tower, looking south, a stove was also heated. Pots boiled in its huge mouth, skewers turned. At that very moment, other doors opened, leading to a current behind the church, and through them the cattlemen began to drag in the carcasses of freshly slaughtered pigs. We went through these open doors and found ourselves on the current, on the eastern outskirts of the courtyard, under the wall, along which the services stretched out in a chain. Severin showed us that the dung dump was on the left, followed by the stables, followed by the stalls, the poultry yard, and the covered sheepfold. Near the cesspool, pigmen stirred the blood of slaughtered pigs in a huge vat. If it is stirred well at once, as we were told, it can keep fresh in this cool air for several days, and then it will be possible to cook blood sausages from it.
Returning to Khramina, we moved in the opposite direction and, having entered the door of the refectory, we barely had time to take a look at it, as we immediately turned onto the stairs starting from the eastern tower.
