The Seattle Kraken are joining the NHL for the 2021-22 season and will play in the Pacific Division. The front office and coaching staff have taken shape, and Climate Pledge Arena is on track to be ready, but the team needs players.

The Kraken selected one player each from 30 NHL teams, as the Vegas Golden Knights were exempt from this draft — they just entered the league in 2017.

Teams could have protected seven forwards, three defensemen and a goalie, or they could have protected eight skaters and a goalie if they felt the need to protect a fourth defenseman — something the Nashville Predators, Tampa Bay Lightning and Toronto Maple Leafs opted to do.

Life Reflections

Mrs. Gladys Willene McMillian Grimes was born in Ben Hill County, Georgia on July 1, 1932 to the late Mr. William McMillian and the late Mrs. Carrie Glenn McMillian.

She attended Monitor High School and later married Leroy Mobley. On May 8, 1968 she married Johnny Grimes.

She was a loving and caring mother who made sure we had everything we needed and always articipated in our activities at school or at home. She was the best mother for which anyone could ask. She loved her grandchildren, who brought a lot of joy and happiness to her life.

She enjoyed shopping, fishing, traveling and dining out.

In 1993 she gave her life to God and was a faithful member of the body of Christ.

In addition to her parents she was preceeded in death by her brother, John Edward McMillian, Sr.

She entered into eternal rest on January 29, 2012.

Freshman Hornets put it together in second half to extract opening victory

Anybody that knows what kind of football is played in Cabot should know — or, at least, suspect — the outcome of Thursday night’s season-opening game between the Cabot South Panthers and the Bryant Hornets freshman team after hearing one statistic:

Cabot threw 12 passes.

Yes, after trailing 6-0 at the half, Bryant scored twice in the second half while the defense forced the Panthers to go to the air instead of pounding, pounding, pounding out of their dead-T offense.

With a little luck thrown in, the Hornets rallied for a 12-7 win in a non-conference game between two Central Arkansas Junior High Conference rivals. Neither of the teams could find a week-one opponent to schedule, so they agreed to play each other in addition to the league battle in Cabot, which will be played Thursday, Oct. 23.

Cabot South managed 102 yards of offense in the first half, including 80 on the ground. The Panthers scored the lone touchdown of the half with :29.9 left on a 2-yard run by quarterback Cody Skinner. Ty Cyr kicked the extra point.

In the second half, however, the Bryant defense limited the Panthers to just 16 yards rushing as they shut the visitors out.

The Hornets, after being held to just 27 yards of total offense in the first half, finished with 152 yards of total offense, sparked by the passing of quarterback Michael Jones and the fresh legs of running back Antonio Fuller who didn’t play in the first half.

And, oh, yes, the lucky part. Leading 12-7 with time running out, the Hornets decided to punt on a fourth-and-7 at the Cabot 43. There was less than 2:30 left in the contest when the Panthers’ Adam Flores fielded the punt by Bryant’s Grayson Prince at the 10. Flores proceeded to break the return 90 yards for a go-ahead touchdown. But much of the return was negated by a penalty for an illegal block in the back.

With 2:15 left, the Panthers took possession at their own 45. They still made a bid to win it as Cyr, at quarterback, completed a 19-yard pass to Marc Magwood. Cameron Vail and Johnny Wallace saved a touchdown by driving Magwood out of bounds.

But the Bryant defense stood up at that point. Hoping to surprise the Hornets, a quick handoff to Jordan Clark was stopped cold by Nick Smith. Cyr tried to roll out to pass again only to have Wallace get to him and hit his arm as he threw. The ball fell incomplete.

Hoping to spring the shifty Magwood, Cyr hit him with a short pass only to have the Hornets sniff it out and stop it after a 4-yard gain. That brought up fourth down and, after Cabot South took a timeout with 1:04 remaining, Cyr’s final pass was incomplete sealing the Bryant win.

“I haven’t got a lot to say,” stated Hornets head coach Kenny Horn. “We didn’t play very well. All I can say is, we won. We played better in the second half.”

Asked if he and his assistants, John Orr, Kirk Bock and Travis Queck changed anything at the half, Horn said no.

“We just had a little heart to heart talk,” he related. “We had better effort in the second half.”

The Hornets went three-and-out on their first two possessions of the game. The Panthers did as well. As the second quarter rolled around, Cabot South drove from its own 42 to the Bryant 27. Sparked by some tough tackling by cornerback Jakalon Pittman, the Hornets made a stand. On first down, Pittman stopped the much-bigger Austin Swackhammer for no gain. Cyr followed with a pair of incomplete passes, setting up a fourth-and-10 at the 27.

As is their habit, the Panthers went for it, turning to some trickery. And the reverse to tight end Dayonte Roberts looked like it might work but Pittman came up again and grounded Roberts, who also had him outsized.

Bryant took over at its own 20 and picked up its initial first down after a 5-yard run by Diante Woodson and a 4-yard pass from Jones to Brooks Ellis. But Jones was dropped for a loss on first down from the 34 and, though he broke a 12-yard run, the Hornets couldn’t make up the difference. A fourth-and-2 sneak from the Hornets 42 came up short and with 3:08 in the half, Cabot South took over with a short field.

Runs by Skinner, Sebastian Stinnett and Swackhammer of 10 yards or more set up Skinner’s touchdown in the final seconds of the half.

Bryant got the ball to start the second half and avoided a turnover on the kickoff when Luke Curtis pounced on a loose ball.

Woodson slashed for 8 yards and, a play later, Jones completed a 15-yard pass to Pittman to convert a third-down that had been complicated by a penalty moments before.

Still, the drive stalled after reaching the Bryant 44. Prince punted it away and Cabot South gained possession at its own 37.

The Panthers appeared to pick up where they left off. A pair of runs set up a third-and-2 at the 45, the kind of situation Cabot teams relish. But Pittman and Johnny Smith came up to drop Stinnett for not gain and, on a fourth down, Wallace wrestled down Cyr for a loss and the Hornets had the ball back.

From the Cabot 41, Jones fired a deep pass down the left seam that Vail snagged, making a fingertip catch on the run. He sprinted into the end zone for the Hornets’ first touchdown with 3:02 left in the third quarter. An extra point kick was low and blocked.

Cabot South made a bid to answer and extend its 7-6 lead, picking up a pair of first downs, one on a 27-yard pass from Skinner to Magwood. Two plays later, on a third-and-5 at the Bryant 39, a mishandled handoff resulted in a fumble that Bryant’s Hunter Howard claimed with 7:21 left to play.

Enter Fuller, who dashed for 8 yards on two carries. The Hornets picked up a first down by getting Cabot South to jump in the neutral zone with their snap count. On the next play, Jones fired a pass to Pittman who turned it into a 23-yard gain.

From the 28, Fuller got the call and skirted left end, down the sideline and into the end zone for the go-ahead score.

Fuller tried to add a run for the two-point conversion but the Panthers stopped him at the lip of the goal to keep it 12-7.

They would get two chances to regain the lead. The first was foiled by defensive plays from James McClendon, Nick Smith and James Polite. The first two was tackles for losses, the third was an interception on a fourth-down reverse pass by Magwood that failed to fool the Hornets’ defensive back.

That came with 4:53 left. The Hornets used up about half of that before punting the ball away resulting in the return for the touchdown that was called back.

Fuller wound up being Bryant’s leading rusher with 36 yards on three carries. Jones, after completing just 1 of 4 passes in the first half, hit 3 of 5 in the second for 79 yards and the score.

The Hornets get another dose of Cabot football next week when they host Cabot North.

Family: Lack of working smoke detectors resulted in deaths

On Aug. 21, 2011, plaintiffs’ decedents Virginia Gonzalez, 48, and Maverick “Johnny” Crowder, 3, were asleep in their single family home, located in Hacienda Heights, when a fire broke out. Virginia Gonzalez’s husband and Johnny’s father, plaintiff Juan Gonzalez, 49, and Juan Gonzalez’s 9-year-old daughter, plaintiff Jasmine Gonzalez, were also asleep at the residence, which was owned by Wayne Lew and his wife, Maria Lew, at the time of the fire. The Lews owned the three-bedroom, one-bathroom, single-story residence from 1990 to 2012. When they purchased the property, a single battery-operated smoke detector was in the house, located in the hallway near the three bedrooms. The Gonzalez family began leasing the property in 1998. On the date of the incident, Virginia and Juan Gonzalez had gone to bed around 10 p.m. They slept in the same bedroom as Johnny, with the door closed, while Jasmine slept in a bedroom down the hall. Approximately an hour after going to bed, Mr. Gonzalez was awoken by Jasmine calling out his name. He got up, opened the door, and saw and smelled smoke. He told Ms. Gonzalez to get up and get Johnny, while Mr. Gonzalez went to get Jasmine. They all attempted to exit the house through the front door, but the smoke and flames were too intense. They then went into one of the bedrooms where Mr. Gonzalez attempted to pull off the blinds and break the window, but he was unable to do so. As a result, they went into another bedroom, where Mr. Gonzalez was able to pull off the blinds and break the window. Mr. Gonzalez jumped out of the window first and then pulled Jasmine out. He then walked Jasmine to the end of the driveway, turned around, and went back to the property. However, as he attempted to re-enter the property through the broken window, the sheriff’s department arrived and deputies pulled him away. Ms. Gonzalez and Johnny ultimately died in the fire. Mr. Gonzalez and the biological mother of Johnny, plaintiff Kathleen Crowder, age 28, acting individually and on behalf of Mr. Gonzalez’s minor daughter, Jasmine, and Ms. Crowder’s three other minor children, Lilly Crowder, Anna Licia Diaz, and Vanessa Diaz, sued the Lews. The Gonzalezes’ three adult children, plaintiffs Priscilla Gonzalez, Yvette Gonzalez, and Richard Gonzalez, who were not living at the property at the time of the incident, were also named as plaintiffs. (Yvette and Richard Gonzalez were initially named as nominal defendants.) Ingraham & De Alba Inc., which was doing business as Servpro of North Pomona/La Verne, and Rossmoyne Inc. were initially also named as defendants, and the Lews’ insurance Carrier, State Farm Insurance Cos., was added as a defendant in an amended complaint. However, Ingraham & De Alba, Rossmoyne, and State Farm were ultimately dismissed from the case. The plaintiffs’ cause and origin fire experts opined that the ignition source was an electrical failure in an extension cord that the Lews had allegedly connected to operate the garage door. Plaintiffs’ counsel noted that there was a single, battery-operated smoke detector in the house, located in the hallway near the three bedrooms, when the Lews purchased the single-story residence in 1990. Counsel also noted that in 1992, a Building Code was enacted that required a smoke detector in every bedroom, as well as the hallway. However, plaintiffs’ counsel contended that although the Lews owned the house until 2012, they never added any other smoke detector. Thus, counsel argued that the Lews’ house was not code compliant. On the evening of the fire, the only detector was in the hallway and it did not activate. Plaintiffs’ counsel argued that if the smoke detector had activated, or if there were other smoke detectors in the bedrooms, the decedents would have been alerted with sufficient time to escape. Defense counsel noted that the cause and origin of the fire was investigated by Detective Michael Digby, of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department-Arson/Explosives Division, and that he first determined the cause of the fire was likely due to candles. Digby, at first, opined that the likely cause of the fire was an unattended lit candle. However, he later ruled out candles based on burn patterns. Certified fire investigator Barry Cramer also investigated the cause and origin of the fire. He initially concurred with Digby’s findings, in that the fire originated within the living room and was likely caused by an unattended burning candle. However, Cramer also changed his opinion. The defense’s cause and origin experts opined that the cause of the fire could not be determined with reasonable scientific likelihood. In addition, the defense’s electrical engineering expert concluded that none of the electrical components caused or contributed to the fire. Defense counsel argued that regardless of what caused the fire, the smoke detector was not working due to the actions of the plaintiffs and that even if it had worked, there would not have been enough time to exit the front of the house because of the flash-over fire.

The association of Canadians with Kenley airfield goes back to its beginnings in 1917 when lumberjacks from the Canadian Forestry Corps were drafted in by the Defence department to clear the ground for the airfield, against the wishes of the local people and the Corporation of London, who had owned the land since 1883.

This association was strengthened in November 1942 when the Canadian wing at Kenley was formed. The wing was made up of Canadian Spitfire squadrons which came and went from Kenley quite frequently. From March 1943, the wing was commanded by Wing Commander Johnnie Johnson, whose score of enemy aircraft destroyed had just reached double figures (it was to reach 38 by the end of the war). These feats earned him a Distinguished Service Order (DSO) and bar, to add to his previous Distinguished Flying Cross (DFC).

By July 1943 Kenley was designated as No.127 wing, part of No. 83 group of the 2^nd Tactical Air Force. Although Spitfires of No.165 squadron arrived in August of that year, from 1943 onwards, Kenley was almost exclusively Canadian and from October 1943 to the following spring there were just two resident squadrons, Nos.403 and 421, both Canadian, under Canadian squadron leaders, Bob Buckham and Charles Magwood.

Johnnie Johnson took over as Wing Commander at Kenley in March 1943 and his wing consisted of two, and later three, Canadian squadrons during that time. His promotion from Squadron Leader meant that he now had the chance to demonstrate his leadership qualities to the full.

Canadian personalities

According to the new Wing Commander, the Canadians “had a reputation for lacking discipline, bloody mindedness and so on…” “Stan Turner for example… was ill-dressed and wouldn’t shave occasionally” and would carry his six-shooter which he would fire off in the mess on occasion when he was drunk. He was however a skilled and brave pilot who had served under Douglas Bader, and registered 16 victories over enemy planes. He also participated in an escort to the mission to drop a replacement leg to his friend and old Squadron Leader, Douglas Bader, when he was in a German Prisoner of War camp.

Johnson also found the Canadians to be “the finest bunch of people you ever did meet”. They had “beautiful discipline in the air… and they really could fly”.

Flying Officer “Danny” Browne joined 403 Squadron in May 1943. Although serving in a Canadian squadron, Browne was in fact an American. He was impressed by Johnson and his Canadians: “We had some fine Canadians at Kenley. Some had been miners and lumberjacks…so it was a weird combination. It was a stroke of genius…to put Johnnie in charge…Johnny got along with them beautifully…(he) has the most extraordinary vocabulary of evil songs…Johnnie’s leadership was not about iron discipline; it was just that everybody wanted to do things the way he wanted them done, because they were so proud of being in that wing…Johnnie would shoot crap with us on the ground, and everybody would call him ‘Wingco’ ”.

The regard Johnson was held in by his Canadian pilots was borne out when Squadron Leader Syd Ford presented him with Canadian shoulder flashes which were sewn onto his uniform. However, periods of inactivity did frustrate the pilots who were eager to get amongst the enemy. As Johnson said, “these guys could fly very well…don’t forget that Kenley was in a built-up area – very difficult to find in murky weather.” A previous Station Commander had erected white-painted tents around the perimeter: “If you saw the tents you just kept turning inwards and the runway appeared!”.

The Kenley squadrons now had the new Spitfire Mk IX which could compete more effectively with the German Focke-Wulf 190s, giving the RAF pilots the upper hand – according the Johnson, “we could turn inside him and hack him down, which we did.”

In addition, at that time Kenley was a well-provided airfield. It was home to around 2,000 personnel, and Group Captain “Jimmy” Fenton, who was the station commander stated: “Kenley seemed to have everything: comfortable quarters, entertainment, including a camp cinema, and an abundant source of girlfriends for the boys!”. The food looked pretty good too – see a typical Airmen’s Mess menu on the next page for the week ending 19 May 1939, although it should be emphasised that this was before the privations of war brought rationing and food shortages, especially for “luxury” items.

Johnson and his Kenley wing were also starting to attract attention and publicity – due to his increasing number of “kills” and their unique flying formation which became recognisable in the air and became known as the “Wolfpack”. Johnson was also near the top of the Fighter Command “score sheet” second only to Adolph “Sailor” Malan, and these sheets were put out to the newspapers who picked up on the “glamour boys” of the RAF. An article in The Yorkshire Post, mentioning Johnson’s 19 kills to date, and that he flew with “a yellow scarf dotted with brown fox heads”. The score of 19 was even more impressive when one considered that fighter pilots now had to go out and chase the “Huns” whereas during the Battle of Britain (which Johnson missed due to shoulder surgery) “the Germans came here”.

Eileen Steel, a young WAAF working at Kenley’s Post Office, situated immediately above the station entrance, often watched Johnnie Johnson’s coming and going from the airfield: “we hero-worshipped him even then.”

Canadian Wing formed

Both 403 and 421 squadrons saw much activity in late 1943 – Johnson’s wing was described as “one of the busiest in Fighter Command, but little activity in early 1944 as the armed forces built up to D-Day. No.403 was mainly involved in “Ramrod” – protecting short range bombing attacks against ground targets – and “Ranger” – freelance flights over enemy territory to engage enemy fighters – missions. No.421 was increasingly used against on attacks against V-1 flying bomb sites in France. No.416 Canadian squadron also moved to Kenley in February 1944. (Note: Johnnie Johnson’s biography puts the 403 and 416 at Kenley and the 421 at Redhill).

After July 1943, Kenley became No.127 Airfield in 83 Group of the 2^nd Tactical Air Force in preparation for the liberation of Europe. From now on the fighter-bomber units would lead a nomadic existence, able to operate from temporary airfield and move at a moment’s notice.

Although the squadrons then began training on dive-bombing tactics in the run-up to D-Day, none remained at Kenley during the final preparations for the assault on the Normandy beaches. Kenley’s squadrons were moved out of the comforts of Kenley for an Advanced Landing Ground at Lashenden in Kent, living in tents, and within two months were operating together in France. The final operation from Kenley took place on  13 March 1944, as bomber escort on a raid to to Namur in Belgium.By this time command and control of Kenley had been taken over by Biggin Hill and the airfield played no major operational role in D-Day, and closed during the summer months of 1944.

Although Kenley’s days of combat flying were all but at an end, the glory days of the Battle of Britain and the years of Johnnie Johnson’s Canadians will not be forgotten.

George Morris Baker , MBE (April 1, 1931 – October 7, 2011) was an English actor and writer.He was best known for portraying Tiberius in I, Claudius , and Inspector Wexford in Ruth Rendell’s Riddles .

Early years

Baker was born in Varna, Bulgaria. His father was an English businessman and honorary vice-consul, and his mother was an Irish Red Cross nurse who moved to Bulgaria to help fight cholera.

He attended Lansing College, Sussex; He then performed as an actor at the Repertory Theater and at the Old Vic.

Career

Early Movie Star

Baker’s first film was Intruder (1953). He made a name for himself in Dam Breakers (1955) and his first starring role was in Shameless Ship (1955) with Richard Attenborough.

Baker remained lead performer in Woman for Joe (1955) with Diane Cilento; Feminine Touch (1956), the role of a handsome doctor in a film about nurses; Hill in Korea (1956), as a soldier hero, supported by Robert Shaw and Stanley Baker; and 92,591 Extra Day (1956), comedy.

Baker Leader Those Perilous Years (1957), an attempt to make Frankie Vaughn a movie star. He was a physician again in No Time for Tears (1957) and played the brave royalist hero of the English Civil War. Moon Rider (1958). He supported Diana Dors in Go Softly Stranger (1958).

Baker’s later films included Lancelot and Guinevere (1963) and Curse of the Fly (1965).

Television work

Over time, Baker became better known as a television actor.He heroically directed Rupert Henzau (1964), played Tallon’s chief of security in Undermind (1965), and was the second (after Guy Doleman) of many actors to play Number Two in the series. He appeared in his own comedy series. Bowler . He was also in the first episode of Some Mothers Do Ave , playing a company boss interviewing the show’s hapless protagonist.

In the acclaimed drama series of 1976 I, Claudius Baker played the Emperor Tiberius Caesar. George R.R. Martin, author of the A Song of Ice and Fire book series that was later adapted into Game of Thrones, stated that the historical performance of Tiberius and Baker in particular was part of the inspiration for his character Stannis Baratheon. He also appeared in episode Get Some! .

In 1977 he played Inspector Roderick Alleyn at the Ngaio Marsh Theater; four adaptations of Ngaio Marsh’s detective and detective novels with New Zealand settings staged for New Zealand television.From 1988 to 2000, he played Inspector Reg Wexford in numerous television adaptations of the Mysteries of Ruth Rendell, and it is probably for this role that he became best known. In 1993, after the death of his second wife, he married actress Louis Ramsay, who played Mrs. Wexford in the same television series.

He also appeared at Baron , Survivors , Minder in Series 1 You Must Have Friends , Coronation Street (as Cecil Newton Brewery Owner), at Doctor Who history Full circle and a masterful twist as a pair of twins in the 2005 Midsomer Murders episode, House in the Woods.

Baker also appeared in the British comedy television series. Tastes ‘in the Tower of London episode as “The Beefeater” and also in the sitcom No Job for Lady , and he is widely known for his role as Captain Benson, James Bond ally in the movie The Spy Who Me loved and for the role of Sir Hilary Bray, an expert on heraldry, in On Her Majesty’s Secret Service . Later, when Bond, played by George Lazenby, portrays Bray in order to gain access to Blofeld, Baker’s voice was dubbed in place of Lazenby’s to provide an accent.Baker also played (uncredited) a NASA engineer in You Only Live Twice .

Ian Fleming considered Baker an ideal candidate for the role of James Bond in the films, but the role went to Sean Connery because Baker had other obligations.

He played a character named Jamus Bondus in an episode of the 1970s comedy comedy series. Up, Pompeii! .

Baker’s first theatrical work was in the repertoire of Deal, Kent. His major stage works include a season with the Old Vic troupe (1959–61), where he played Bolingbroke at Richard II , Jack at Be Serious and Warwick at Saint Jean .In 1965, he founded his own touring company, Candida Plays, at the Theater Royal in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. He was Claudius in Buzz Goodbody’s famous modern dress. Hamlet for the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1975.

In 1980, Baker wrote Fatal Spring TV play about the lives of poets Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves; it appeared on BBC 2 on November 7, 1980. This earned him the United Nations Peace Prize.His other writings have included four of 92,591 Wexford scripts.

Baker was subject This is Your Life in 1995 when he was surprised by Michael Aspel during a photo shoot aboard a boat in Port Solent on the Hampshire Coast. He also appeared on Blankety Blank Lily Savage .

MBE

In 2007, Baker was honored as a Fellow of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) for his charitable efforts to establish a youth club in his home village.

Personal life

Baker’s third wife, Louis Ramsay, who died earlier in 2011, played his on-screen wife Dora in Ruth Rendell’s Mysteries . Baker has five daughters left (four from his first marriage, one from his second marriage to Sally Home).

His granddaughter, Kim Sherwood, is an award-winning author whose works were inspired by her grandparents’ experiences during the Holocaust.

Death

Baker died on October 7, 2011 at the age of 80.He died of pneumonia after a stroke.
