Youth basketball programs in Southern California play a crucial role in developing the next generation of basketball talent. These organizations provide numerous benefits to young players:
- Skill Development: Regular practices and competitive games help players refine their fundamental skills and learn advanced techniques.
- Exposure: Participation in high-profile tournaments and leagues increases visibility to college scouts and recruiters.
- Competition: Playing against top talent from across the region helps players elevate their game and prepare for higher levels of competition.
- Teamwork: Being part of a team teaches valuable life skills such as cooperation, communication, and leadership.
- Physical Fitness: Regular training and competition help players maintain good health and physical fitness.
How do these programs contribute to long-term success in basketball? By providing a strong foundation in skills, competitive experience, and exposure to college recruiters, these programs significantly increase a player’s chances of advancing to collegiate and potentially professional levels of basketball.
Choosing the Right Youth Basketball Program
With so many options available in Southern California, it’s essential for players and parents to choose the right program that aligns with their goals and skill level. Here are some factors to consider:
- Skill Level: Determine whether the program caters to beginners, intermediate players, or elite athletes.
- Goals: Consider whether the focus is on skill development, competitive play, college exposure, or a combination of these factors.
- Time Commitment: Evaluate the practice and game schedule to ensure it fits with other obligations.
- Coaching Quality: Research the background and experience of the coaches involved in the program.
- Facilities: Consider the quality and location of the training facilities and game venues.
- Cost: Understand the financial commitment required, including fees, travel expenses, and equipment costs.
- Reputation: Look for reviews or testimonials from current and former participants to gauge the program’s effectiveness.
What questions should parents ask when evaluating a youth basketball program? Some important questions to consider include:
- What is the coach-to-player ratio during practices?
- How much playing time can my child expect in games?
- What is the program’s philosophy on player development and competition?
- Are there opportunities for players to receive college exposure or recruitment assistance?
- How does the program handle conflicts with school commitments or other sports?
The Future of Youth Basketball in Southern California
As the popularity of basketball continues to grow, youth programs in Southern California are likely to evolve and expand. Some trends that may shape the future of youth basketball in the region include:
- Increased Use of Technology: Programs may incorporate more advanced analytics and video analysis tools to aid player development.
- Emphasis on Holistic Development: There may be a greater focus on mental health, nutrition, and academic support in addition to basketball skills.
- Expansion of Girls’ Programs: As women’s basketball gains more visibility, there may be increased investment in girls’ youth programs.
- Collaboration with Professional Teams: Youth programs may forge stronger partnerships with local professional teams for resources and exposure.
- Specialized Training: Programs may offer more position-specific training or focus on developing particular skill sets.
How can young players prepare for these future trends? Aspiring basketball players should focus on developing a well-rounded skill set, stay open to new training methods and technologies, and prioritize their overall health and academic performance alongside their basketball development.
In conclusion, Southern California offers a rich landscape of youth basketball programs, catering to players of all skill levels and aspirations. From competitive leagues and tournaments to specialized training programs, young basketball players in the region have numerous opportunities to develop their skills, gain exposure, and pursue their dreams of playing at higher levels. By carefully selecting the right program and committing to consistent hard work and improvement, aspiring players can make the most of these opportunities and set themselves up for success both on and off the court.

The layup masters – TrueHoop
Getty Images
Statistics show LeBron James, Isaiah Thomas and Tony Parker are among the best.
Is being good at the layup as simple as getting to the rim? There’s rarely a distinction made between a player’s ability to get in layup range versus his ability to actually sink it. Perhaps that’s because “a layup” is also a metaphor for something easy, like a “gimme” putt in golf.
Whoever popularized the metaphor probably never tried to score over NBA giants, I’d hazard.
The layup also gets no respect because it doesn’t demand respect. Unlike the dunk, the layup fails to seize an arena’s attention with a sudden lightning bolt at the hoop. Instead, it takes an indirect route off the backboard before meandering along the rim, waffling on whether to finally be a basket already.
Incredible dunks look super intentional, as though a player’s life depended on forcing the ball through the rim at that moment. Incredible layups look accidental, as though a fouled Dwyane Wade thought “Why not?” while flinging the ball in the backboard’s general direction.
So the layup commutes between “you’re open and should always make it” and “you weren’t looking at the rim, that was total luck.” It’s hard to get recognition for being good at something when both the routine and the spectacular are so easily dismissed.
Well, no one is dismissing the mighty layup in these parts. The shortest bank shot is indeed a skill — and an important one. Here are some players who, according to Basketball-Reference.com, have mastered the ancient art, along with some guys who could stand to do better.
THE BEST
LeBron James
Made 70 percent of layups, attempted 357
When LeBron stole Game 1 from Indiana with an off-hand layup, there was far less marveling at his steely reserve than there was criticism of Frank Vogel for letting it happen.
An open layup is a high percentage shot for anyone, but it says something that LeBron is comfortable with his off hand in a high-pressure moment like that. His ambidexterity is the foundation of his short-range arsenal.
Not only is LeBron better at getting to the rim than everyone else but he might be more accurate once there than everyone else, as well. Last season, LeBron shot 70 percent on layups. He attempted at least 200 layups more than anyone with a better layup conversion rate.
The aforementioned ambidexterity allows LeBron to explore any angle at any time. A favorite tactic of his is to shield the defender with his back while banking a no-look lefty. It’s a bit like a reverse lay-in that doesn’t finish on the other side of the hoop.
Isaiah Thomas
Made 67 percent of layups, attempted 151
Pound-for-pound (Copyright: Allen Iverson) the best layupper around. At a tiny 5-9 in socks, Thomas shouldn’t be able to hit 67.1 percent on these shots. He has had a lifetime of practice against taller players, though.
Thomas hasn’t mastered any one thing in particular. He just has the full layup repertoire. He’ll switch hands when it suits him. He’ll loft it high off the glass like Steve Nash. He’ll shield off contact with his back while scooping the ball forward. He has the up-and-under down.
Seriously, watch this guy at the rim. Better yet, record this guy at the rim, pause right before the layup happens and appreciate how impossible the feat looks. Water can’t find a way through cracks the way a Thomas layup can.
Tony Parker
Made 67 percent of layups, attempted 331
This is the defining Parker trait and always has been. There’s also a striking quirk to his game. Although Parker can use his left hand if the situation requires, he prefers to use his right, even on the left side of the backboard. I’d say the signature Tony layup is a right-handed scoop on the left side of the rim. That is, if the signature Tony layup isn’t an overhand try in which he’s leaning backward on an invisible recliner.
Marcus Thornton
Made 70 percent of layups, attempted 156
Look, I’d be lying if I said I could fully explain Thornton’s layup skill, but he’s been great two years running (69.3 percent on layups last season). He isn’t especially fluid with his moves, but he’s good with either hand. Thornton also doesn’t force anything around the rim. Most of his lay-ins come off assists.
THE WORST
Brandon Jennings
Made 50 percent of layups, attempted 281
Kevin Costner’s “back, and to the left” line creeps into my head whenever Jennings drives. Detroit’s new starting point guard has a tendency to lean backward off balance while flinging lefty prayers. Hopefully Jennings learned something from former teammate Beno Udrih, who shoots contested layups quite well.
Carmelo Anthony
Made 50 percent of layups, attempted 335
He’s even worse at contested layups when you consider how often he’s rebounding his misses for easy putbacks. But those putbacks might answer the question of why Anthony is so mediocre near the basket. Melo loves chasing his own shot, and the first try might be a careless prelude to the chase. He’s also not especially adept at using his left hand and thus forces a lot of action with his right.
Dion Waiters
Made 50 percent of layups, attempted 245
He’s the right-handed Jennings, although there’s more hope for Waiters going forward, I’d say. He’s stronger than Jennings (eventually my “Strongta Ellis” nickname will get off the ground, I just know it), taller than Jennings and younger than Jennings. I’m banking (OK, I’ll stop) on an improved Waiters near the rim.
Ramon Sessions
Made 49 percent of layups, attempted 290
Sessions was among the worst perimeter player on layups last season, but he hasn’t been this bad in the past. Last season could be a fluke — or the result of a once-quick point guard slowing down. I’ve noticed he tends to go right when the path is blocked off.
Omer Asik
Made 48 percent of layups, attempted 145
I stayed away from listing big men because so many of their “layups” are really post moves or strained putbacks, but Asik deserves a mention. He converted 94.6 percent of his dunks, nearly 47 better than he managed on layups. From 3-10 feet, he shot 27.4 percent.
Few players better demonstrate the difference between grip and other kinds of fine motor skills. Asik is good at dunking; he has no issue putting his clamps on the rock and tomahawking it through the hoop. Once his hands try a more delicate layup, though, the ball flies off the window as if Asik’s playing handball.
Ricky Rubio
Made 45 percent of layups, attempted 164
I don’t want to judge too harshly, as Rubio was coming back from an ACL tear. This is his second season of poor finishing, though (48.4 percent on layups in his rookie year). It’s curious that Rubio struggles like this because he’s so well coordinated and so well aware of angles when it comes to passing. Perhaps the problem is his running balance. On drives, Rubio often staggers as if he’s in an invisible potato sack race.
IN THE MIDDLE
Russell Westbrook
Made 58 percent of layups, attempted 478
Westbrook might be the player whose facility at making layups simply means he gets to the rim a bunch. That’s not entirely fair, though, because Westbrook can and does finish with either hand.
You just wouldn’t expect the dynamic point guard to be a whole 12 percent worse on layups than LeBron, given Westbrook’s elite speed and hops. It appears, from the video clips, as if Westbrook flies into the lane with more desire than strategy, willing the ball toward what might be the hoop. That’s nitpicking because, even if Westbrook is only OK at converting layup attempts, it matters more that he is creating so many of them.

In 3×3 basketball, all players must be generalists
Ex-mentor of the Russian national basketball team 3×3 about this game, which is not well known to everyone,
In recent years, more and more people have heard about 3×3 basketball. In different parts of the world, tournaments began to be regularly held under the signs – satellites, challengers, masters. The word “streetball” is pronounced less and less, the rules from the usual street basketball in the 3×3 format have significant differences and continue to evolve. To understand this game, its nuances, the structure of tournaments, we turned to a person who knows about this sport better than anyone else in Russia. To your attention – Maxim Zimarin. He won international tournaments both as a player and as a coach. In addition, Maxim played the most of the Russian players at the tournaments of the Masters World Series. And today he answered questions from dwashaga.ru about 3×3 basketball.
What are Challengers?
Regarding the “Challengers”, it is necessary in principle to explain first what is the FIBA 3×3 World Tour and the FIBA Season. The structure of the tournaments is reminiscent of the tennis model. There are also smaller tournaments that lead to larger ones. The finals of the 3×3 world rounds are called the Masters series tournaments, which end with a common final of all world rounds – the WorldTourFinal. It includes the top 12 teams at the end of the season, including all Masters winners. That year there were 7 of them, this year – already 9, which means that 3 more top rated ones will be added to them. Our St-Petersburg team played in the finals of the world tour, which took place in Abu Dhabi two years ago. In recent history, this is the only Russian team that got there. We were just the same and selected according to the rating, having twice reached the semifinals of the Masters – in Tokyo and Beijing.
Accordingly, a “Challenger” is a tournament that qualifies for the “Masters”.Now the winners of the Promo Cup 3×3 – INTERGALACTIC Serbs will go to the Challenger to compete there for one of the first two places that give them the right to participate in the Masters Series tournament.
There are several ways to get into the Challengers. Win at the “satellites” tournaments, such as the St. Petersburg Promo Cup, where the composition of the participants is formed by the organizers themselves. Or enter the TOP-20 of the world ranking at the end of the last season. For example, two years ago we didn’t even have to be selected at the satellites, since we got directly to the “Challengers” according to the rating.Teams with a low rating need to go through a sieve of qualifications. There are also tournaments, the so-called “quests”. Such an example in Russia is the Night League. There were three rounds, according to the results of which 16 best teams out of 25 got to the final, and the winner of the final already received a ticket to the “Challenger”. The organizers also have several “wildcards”, according to which they can include any team in the tournament. More often the organizers are interested in adding local teams. This year one of the “wildcard” at the “Moscow Open” was received by the Russian team, which will represent our country at the World Cup, which will be held in the Philippines in early June.
FIBA divided the teams by skill – the world elite (these are the TOP-8 teams at the end of the year that have guaranteed slots for the Masters), close to the world elite (9-20 teams in the world that have guaranteed slots for the Challengers), the challengers and all the rest …
Challengers in Russia
Only Moscow Open remained in Russia, although earlier “Challengers” were also held in St. Petersburg and once in Novosibirsk. This is very little for such a large country like Russia.I hope this situation will change, and there will be more major tournaments in our country.
Pro Season 3×3
The 3×3 season begins at the end of March. Challengers end in August. In September-October tournaments of the “Masters” series are finished. And at the end of October, the final of the world tour is already being played. The previous one was held in Beijing, and the main roundabout will also take place there this year. Prior to that, the World Tour Finals were held in Abu Dhabi for 4 consecutive years.
What makes the 3×3 Promo Cup unique?
It was the first 3×3 tournament in a shopping mall in Russia.I personally played 3 or 4 times in a shopping mall in Asia and we played with the national team in Bucharest at the European Championship. The second is the quality of the tournament, which was noted by everyone. The Promo Cup was held at a very serious level, much higher than its satellite status.
How is the old streetball different from the modern 3×3 basketball?
There were some players in the Promo Cup who haven’t played in 3v3 for two or three years, they say the game has changed a lot. And I agree with that.Even those teams that are in a lower class show a completely different basketball. There is less 1-on-1 play, and the combination component has begun to appear more. Plus – the attack time was reduced. All teams play very fast. The current rules have been established over the past three years, before that they have changed several times. Although we will probably see the final version of the rules at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020.
Is the treatment of fouls in 3×3 different from big basketball?
These sports are related, but there are many key differences, and the interpretation of fouls is definitely different. There are a number of fundamental differences. Of course, top 5×5 players will be able to compete in 3×3. Here, the game requires certain skills, which are very critical. In regular basketball, there are more role players who fulfill their very limited role in the team. They can be very small, very tall, practically not throwing away. In 3×3, players are generally more versatile, because in an ideal team, anyone should be able to do everything: drive, throw, fight under the basket and play actively on the perimeter, while having serious physical training.
How are 3×3 ratings calculated?
An individual FIBA rating is maintained, and depending on the level of the tournament (from the color of the tournament), different points are awarded. For black – the maximum (Masters), as for the Grand Slam tournament in tennis. “Challengers” and World and European Championships – the level below, then “satellites”, “quests”, etc. The nine best tournaments are assigned an individual rating, which is the basis for the team’s rating. Let’s say that now there are four Serbian teams in the TOP-8 of the best teams in the world. The one that played at the Promo Cup is now 5th in Serbia. The team is still not very well-known, although it is already world-class, and continues to break through to the top of the elite. From what I saw, I think they will come there if I continue to work.
And, for example, Lasmanis played for the team from Latvia “GHETTOFAMILY” only in this tournament, and so he plays for “Riga”, which is one of the five best teams in the world. Karlis himself is currently in the world ranking of players on the 21st line.
Plus from personal statistics, different players of the same team for a tournament can get different points in the rating.
In addition, according to the rating of the players, the rating of the federation is considered – out of the top 100 players by rating. Accordingly, Serbia is leading by a wide margin. We ranked second. Let’s say two teams from Europe get to the Olympics directly by rating. The third – with some options. Likewise from other continents.
What is the Europa League?
Now only the Promo Cup has passed. The idea of the organizers is this – if the Fiebovsk season is in warm weather, and there are no serious tournaments in winter, then make a winter league in shopping malls independent of the weather. For example, twice a month in different European cities. The organizers did the promo Cup in order to show what kind of product can be given so that people can see it. While it was a test of the pen. But we have already managed to agree to get the status of a “satellite” for him in order to send the winner to the “Challenger”. If the Promo Cup did not have a satellite status and a high rating, then teams like Serbia would not be very profitable to play in the Promo Cup. Even though the organization was at the challenger level.Because they set themselves the task of getting into the TOP-8 of the world. After all, FIBA pays money to those teams who even just get into the coveted eight without winning the world tour. And the total prize money budget this season is already over $ 1.5 million.
For comparison, in beach volleyball, after it became an Olympic sport, the entire budget increased from 600 thousand (as in 3×3 two years ago) to 6 million. Let’s say there were quite modest prizes at the St. Petersburg Promo Cup – 1000 Euro, 500 and 250.And on “Challengers” it is $ 10,000, $ 6,000, $ 3,000 and for the fourth – $ 1,000. On “Masters” it is even more – starting from $ 20,000. Therefore, this kind of money for non-top players from 5×5 is not bad. At the World Tour Finals, the winners are now receiving $ 50,000 per team.

Basketball 3×3
Basketball 3×3 (street basketball, or streetball from the English.Streetball) is a sports team game in which players throw the ball into one basket attached at a height of 3 m 5 cm (10 feet) from the floor.
Street basketball is a sports game based on the rules of classic basketball that is popular all over the world. In the United States, basketball has become a cult sport, played since 1891, when physical education teacher at Springfield College, James Naismith, invented the game for his students. In 1904, at the III Olympic Games in St. Louis, the first demonstration basketball competition took place.A large-scale basketball tournament was organized during the games of the XI Olympiad in 1936, which was attended by the creator of the game, James Naismith.
By the middle of the twentieth century. basketball has become the national sport in the United States. The American National Basketball Association (NBA) played only white players, African Americans could not be enrolled in the NBA, which led to the creation of streetball.
Street basketball originated in the poor African American neighborhoods of the United States in the 1950s.The main advantages of street basketball are its versatility and simplicity: the ball is thrown into one basket in the half of the basketball court, the number of players in each team is three people, there are no referees, violations and warnings are monitored by the teams themselves, and the place to play can be found almost anywhere.
Gradually, streetball has evolved from a regular entertainment after work into an independent and popular sport. In 1956, basketball fan Holcombe Rucker held the first street basketball tournament in Harlem, New York. These competitions soon became popular. America recognized and loved street basketball. Decades later, Rucker Park – the venue of Holcomb Rucker for the competition – has become a symbol of New York and bears his name.
Streetball came to Europe at the end of the twentieth century, when in 1991 a street basketball tournament was held in France. The game was named “basketball 3×3” and became popular all over the world.Today, basketball associations are involved in the development of street basketball, and streetball federations have been established in some countries (for example, the Russian Street Basketball Association).
In 2007, the International Basketball Federation (Federation Internationale de Basketball, FIBA), together with the organizing committee of the Youth Olympic Games, decided to include street basketball in the Summer Games program. The debut of the new sport took place at the Youth Olympic Games in Singapore in August 2010.In 2011, the World Youth Championship was held in Italy. In 2014, the Russian Street Basketball Association organized the World Streetball Championship in Moscow. By the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), 3×3 basketball is included in the program of the Tokyo Olympics.

International experts highly appreciated the first United Europa League 3×3 Basketball, which was held in St. Petersburg with the support of the Leningrad NPP and Rosenergoatom
April 6, 2019in St. Petersburg, the first in the history of the United Europa League in basketball 3×3, a new Olympic sport, has come to an end. The League became possible thanks to the support of the Leningrad NPP and Rosenergoatom Concern JSC (part of the Electric Power Division of Rosatom).
The main organizer was the Dynamo-Rosenergoatom Sports Training Center. The strongest teams from Latvia, Czech Republic, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania and Holland took part in the League.
The first league cup and a ticket to the Masters level tournament in St.Doha (Qatar) was won by the Riga Ghetto team from Latvia. A ticket to another prestigious Challenger FIBA tournament in China and the second place in the finals was won by nuclear scientists from the Rosenergoatom team and the Gagarin team. During all 6 rounds within 3 months, almost all teams took the podium and became champions. Live broadcasts received up to 900 thousand views, the games were attended by famous athletes, representatives of the Russian and international basketball federations, the government of St. Petersburg and the Leningrad region. The main thing is that the venues in the Galereya shopping and entertainment complex and the Piter-Raduga shopping and entertainment complex made it possible to gather tens of thousands of spectators at the games.
Sergey Fomin, General Director of the United League of Europe in basketball 3×3: “This is a completely new format, this has not been done in Russia yet, so we hope for the success and further development of this project. We considered the sites in Moscow, Minsk, Riga, but the correct strategic decision was made to conduct tours only in the cultural capital.Petersburg was also a priority for its basketball traditions. The culture of basketball and basketball itself originated in the nineteenth century in this city. The famous “Spartak” with Kondrashin and Belov, the presence of two professional teams at the moment – Zenit (VTB United League) and Spartak (Super League), strong support from the Basketball Federation of St. Petersburg, all this creates a basketball aura. The choice of St. Petersburg was also influenced by the fact that the Leningrad nuclear power plant is located in the Leningrad region (Sosnovy Bor), which is part of the Rosenergoatom concern. These partners provide tremendous support to the league, the Dynamo-Rosenergoatom project and the development of basketball in general. Many thanks from all the participants and organizers I express personally to the General Director of the Concern Andrey Yuvenalyevich Petrov and the Director of Leningrad NPP Vladimir Ivanovich Pereguda. A strong team, good teamwork is the key to development. ”
The tournament was attended by experts from the international basketball association FIBA. FIBA Sports Director Kosta Iliev: “The impressions from the tournament are the best.I was not surprised by the excellent organization of the tournament in the homeland of Russian basketball. I have been to St. Petersburg more than once and I know how people can work here ”.
The Director of Leningrad NPP Vladimir Pereguda attended the Final Games, he congratulated the participants on their successful performance and expressed his intentions to continue supporting the new Olympic sport: “This format of sports competitions also brings mass sports to a new level. After all, behind the Europa League, its beautiful games in the center of St. Petersburg, there is the massive street sports of our children. For several years we have been cooperating with the Dynamo-Rosenergoatom sports training center within the framework of the Basketball Planet – Orange Atom project. Over the past few years, school basketball has reached a new level in Sosnovy Bor, now teams, even in the lower grades, have basketball teams. City and intercity tournaments and master classes are held for them. All this spurs our children to a healthy lifestyle and striving upward, to new victories. ”
The First European United Basketball League 3×3 was held in St. Petersburg from January 29 to April 6, 2019 and consisted of 6 rounds. The goal of the tournament is to popularize 3×3 basketball as a new Olympic sport. The League teams are divided into 2 categories: Elite and PRO. There were 8 teams in the Elite Division. The PRO division has 12 teams (one of them is LNPP).
Leningrad NPP is a branch of Rosenergoatom Concern JSC, located in the town of Sosnovy Bor, 40 km west of St. Petersburg on the shore of the Gulf of Finland. Leningrad NPP is the largest in Russia in terms of installed capacity of 4200 MW and the only one with two types of reactors: three operating RBMK-1000 power units (uranium-graphite channel-type thermal neutron reactors with an electrical capacity of 1000 MW) and one VVER-1200 generation 3+ power unit are in operation. (pressurized water power reactor with an electric power of 1200 MW).The country’s first RBMK-1000 power unit was shut down for decommissioning on December 21, 2018. Construction of the VVER-1200 power unit No. 2 continues.
