How big is a hockey pitch. What are the key measurements for a standard field hockey ground. Why are hockey fields watered. What are the dimensions of hockey goals.
Standard Hockey Field Dimensions: Length, Width, and Key Markings
Field hockey is played on a rectangular pitch with specific dimensions and markings. Understanding these measurements is crucial for players, coaches, and anyone involved in the sport. Let’s explore the standard dimensions of a hockey field:
- Length: 91.40 meters (100 yards)
- Width: 55 meters (60 yards)
- Total area: 5,027 square meters (6,000 square yards)
The field is divided into several sections by lines running across its width:
- 23-meter lines: Located 22.9 meters (25 yards) from each backline
- Center line: Positioned at the midpoint, 45.7 meters (50 yards) from each backline
- Shooting circles: Semi-circular areas at each end of the field
These lines play a crucial role in gameplay, defining areas where specific rules apply and influencing tactics and strategy.
The Shooting Circle: Dimensions and Importance
The shooting circle, also known as the “D” or striking circle, is a critical area in field hockey. Its dimensions are:
- Radius: 14.63 meters from the center of the goal line
- Flat top width: 3.66 meters
Why is the shooting circle so important? Goals can only be scored when the ball is played from within this area, making it a focal point for both attacking and defensive strategies. The shape and size of the circle influence player positioning, ball control techniques, and shooting angles.
Penalty Stroke Mark
Within the shooting circle, there’s a crucial marking known as the penalty stroke mark. This spot is:
- Diameter: 15 centimeters
- Distance from goal: 6.40 meters from the inside of the goal line
The penalty stroke mark is used for one of the most intense moments in field hockey – the penalty stroke, a one-on-one confrontation between an attacker and the goalkeeper.
Hockey Goal Dimensions and Specifications
The goals in field hockey have specific measurements to ensure fairness and consistency across all levels of play. Here are the key dimensions:
- Width: 3.66 meters (12 feet)
- Height: 2.14 meters (7 feet)
- Depth: 1.2 meters (3.94 feet)
- Sideboards and backboard height: 0.46 meters (18 inches)
Are hockey goals always positioned in the same way? Yes, the goals are placed on the outside portion of the back line, not on top of it. This positioning affects the angle of shots and the goalkeeper’s perspective.
Goal Post Specifications
The goal posts and crossbar must meet specific requirements:
- Color: White
- Shape: Rectangular
- Width: 50 millimeters (2 inches)
- Depth: 50 to 75 millimeters (2 to 3 inches)
These specifications ensure visibility for players and officials while maintaining the structural integrity of the goal.
Line Markings: Width and Color Specifications
The lines on a hockey field serve multiple purposes, from defining boundaries to indicating specific play areas. Here are the key specifications for field hockey line markings:
- Line width: 75 millimeters (2.95 inches)
- Color: White (typically)
Why are the lines this specific width? The 75mm width ensures visibility from all areas of the field while not interfering with ball movement or player footing. The white color provides maximum contrast against the green turf, enhancing visibility for players, officials, and spectators.
Types of Lines on a Hockey Field
Several types of lines are present on a standard hockey field:
- Side lines: Running the length of the field
- Back lines: Running the width of the field, including the goal lines
- 23-meter lines: Parallel to the back lines, 22.9 meters from each end
- Center line: Dividing the field in half
- Shooting circle lines: Defining the ‘D’ at each end
Each of these lines plays a specific role in gameplay, influencing tactics, ball placement for restarts, and areas where certain rules apply.
Watering Hockey Fields: Purpose and Benefits
One unique aspect of modern field hockey is the practice of watering artificial turf pitches. But why are hockey fields watered? There are several important reasons:
- Improved ball roll: Water reduces friction, allowing for faster and more consistent ball movement.
- Better stick-to-ball contact: Watered turf allows players to easily get their sticks under the ball.
- Enhanced player safety: Water acts as a lubricant, reducing the risk of abrasions during falls or slides.
- Temperature regulation: On hot days, the water helps cool the playing surface.
- Increased durability: Regular watering helps maintain the integrity of the artificial turf fibers.
How does watering affect gameplay? The presence of water on the pitch significantly influences the speed and bounce of the ball, requiring players to adapt their techniques and strategies accordingly. It also allows for more spectacular diving saves by goalkeepers and sliding tackles by defenders.
Water-Based vs. Sand-Based Turfs
While water-based turfs are preferred for high-level competitions, sand-based turfs are still common at lower levels. Here’s a comparison:
- Water-based turfs:
- Faster ball speed
- More consistent ball bounce
- Reduced risk of player injury
- Higher maintenance costs
- Sand-based turfs:
- Lower initial and maintenance costs
- Suitable for multi-sport use
- Less dependent on water availability
- Slower ball speed and less predictable bounce
The choice between water-based and sand-based turfs often depends on factors such as climate, budget, and level of play.
Unique Hockey Fields: The World’s Highest Altitude Stadium
While most hockey fields share standard dimensions, some venues stand out due to their unique characteristics. One such example is the Shilaroo Hockey Stadium in Himachal Pradesh, India. What makes this stadium special?
- Altitude: Approximately 2,500 meters (8,000 feet) above sea level
- Location: Surrounded by the Narkanda and Hatu Peaks
- Title: World’s highest altitude hockey stadium
How does the high altitude affect gameplay? Playing at such elevations can significantly impact athletes’ performance due to reduced oxygen levels. Players may experience:
- Increased fatigue
- Altered ball flight characteristics
- Longer recovery times
The Shilaroo Hockey Stadium serves as a unique training ground for athletes looking to improve their endurance and adapt to challenging playing conditions.
Field Hockey Rules: Key Points for Beginners
Understanding the basic rules of field hockey is essential for anyone new to the sport. Here are some fundamental rules to get you started:
- Number of players: Each team fields 11 players, including one goalkeeper.
- Game duration: Matches consist of four 15-minute quarters at the international level.
- Scoring: Goals can only be scored from within the shooting circle.
- Ball control: Players may only use the flat side of the stick to control the ball.
- Foot contact: Field players are not allowed to intentionally use their feet or body to control the ball.
- Obstruction: Players cannot use their body to block an opponent from the ball.
- Penalties: Various infractions result in free hits, penalty corners, or penalty strokes.
How do these rules influence gameplay? These regulations shape the strategies teams employ, the skills players develop, and the overall flow of the game. They encourage fair play, skill development, and tactical thinking.
Common Fouls and Penalties
Understanding the penalties for rule infractions is crucial for players and spectators alike. Here are some common fouls and their consequences:
- Free hit: Awarded for minor infractions outside the shooting circle
- Penalty corner: Given for defensive fouls within the shooting circle or intentional fouls within the defensive 23-meter area
- Penalty stroke: Awarded for serious fouls that prevent a likely goal
Each of these penalties provides the attacking team with an opportunity to score, making rule adherence critical for defensive success.
Equipment and Safety in Field Hockey
Proper equipment is essential for player safety and performance in field hockey. What are the key pieces of equipment used in the sport?
- Hockey stick: Made of wood, fiberglass, or composite materials
- Ball: Hard plastic, 23 cm in circumference
- Shin guards: Protect the lower legs from impact
- Mouthguard: Prevents dental injuries
- Goalkeeper equipment: Includes helmet, chest protector, leg guards, and hand protectors
How does equipment contribute to player safety? Each piece of equipment is designed to protect players from the potential risks associated with a fast-paced sport involving a hard ball and swinging sticks. Proper equipment use significantly reduces the risk of injuries.
Field Surface and Player Safety
The playing surface itself plays a crucial role in player safety. Modern artificial turfs offer several safety benefits:
- Consistent surface: Reduces the risk of unexpected ball bounces or player trips
- Shock absorption: Many turfs include an underlying shock-absorbing layer to reduce impact on joints
- Water-based systems: When properly watered, these surfaces reduce friction burns during falls or slides
These features, combined with proper technique and adherence to rules, help make field hockey a safe and enjoyable sport for participants at all levels.
How big is a hockey pitch? All the information about hockey dimensions
How big is a hockey pitch? In this article we provide the answer to this question and we hope to be able to provide this essential information to new clubs that are in line of building new pitches.
How big is a hockey pitch? (Outdoor hockey):
The limits of a hockey field are the side lines and the back lines which form a rectangular shape of 91.40 metes (100 yards) long from backline to backline, by 55 meters wide (60 yards aprox.).
There are 3 lines that cut the field from side to side. The ones closer to the circle are the 23 metres lines and are actually placed at the 22.9 meters mark (25 yards from the backline). The centre line is located at a distance of 50 yards from the backlines.
What about the circles and goals?
The circle has a distance of 14.63 metres with a flat top that expands for 3.66 metres which is the same width that the goal bars should be from post to post. The goals present 2 sideboards and one backboard with a height of 0.46 metres and a depth (for the sideboards) of 1.2 meters.
The penalty stroke circles have a diameter of 15 centimetres and are placed 6.40 metres from the inside part of the goal line. Every single line around the hockey pitch has a width of 75 millimetres and the goals should be placed on the outside portion of the back line and not on top of it.
If you need more information about the different lines and rules of hockey, you should visit the FIH (International Hockey Federation) website under the rules of hockey section to find all the information that you might need.
Fun Fact: The world’s highest altitude hockey stadium:
The Shilaroo Hockey Stadium is a hockey stadium located in Shilaroo, Himachal Pradesh, India. This Stadium is the world’s highest altitude hockey stadium at around 8,000 feet (almost 2,500 meters above sea level) and it’s surrounded by Narkanda and Hatu Peaks (I created this post with more pictures about this stadium here).
Why do we water hockey fields?
Sand based turfs are cheaper than water based, but this last type of surface offers the best and highest sport performance while providing more safety. Water based pitches have a very high density of grass therefore water makes the ball roll faster while controlling the way it bounces off the ground.
Compared to the sand, the “grass hair” move with more freedom, enabling hockey players to get the stick below the ball with ease. Finally the water based turfs remain soft and absorb impact and shock in a better way. The water reduces the friction helping players to get less scratch while sliding. Generally these type of pitches are placed with a anti-shock layer which reduces the stress on bones, muscles and joints.

Field Hockey, The Rules | MomsTeam
A field hockey match consists of
two halves, usually 35 minutes each, and begins with a pass back (a
non-defended pass from one teammate to another at mid-field). There are
11 players to a side, one of whom is a goalkeeper. The object of the
game is to score more goals than the opposition. Goals are scored when
the ball — made of solid plastic, weighing between 5 1/2 ounces and 5
3/4 ounces with a circumference of 8 13/16 inches to 9 1/4 inches —
crosses the goal line between the goal posts after being touched by the
stick of an attacker within the circle. Each goal is worth one point.
The ball can only be touched with the flat side of the curved, hardwood
stick.
Unique to field hockey is the obstruction rule. In virtually every
other sport, shielding the ball with one’s body is an integral part of
game strategy. However, this is not allowed in field hockey. All
players have an equal chance to gain control of the ball as it is
dribbled or passed down the field.
Other infractions include advancing (other than the goalkeeper, no
player may play the ball with any part of the body), dangerous use of
the stick and hitting the ball in a manner that could lead to dangerous
play. For a breach of rules, an umpire may award a free hit, penalty
corner or penalty stroke. A majority of scoring opportunities in each
match comes from penalty corners.

The Game
- Two Halves, 35 minutes each in collegiate and international play, 30 minutes in high school play
- 11 players per side, including the goalkeeper
- The
pitch is 100 yards long and 60 yards wide (91.40m x 55.0m) divided by a
center line and a 25-yard line on each side of the field. A striking
circle is marked 16 yards (14.63m) out from each goal post. All
international matches are played on watered down artificial turf. - Goal
cages are 7 feet (2.14m) high, 12 feet (3.66m) wide and 4 feet (1.22m)
deep. Boards on the back and side of the cages are 18 inches high. Two umpires on the field officiate the match. An additional umpire may sit at the scorer’s table.
The ball must be passed or dribbled down the field with the flat side of the stick.
- A goal is scored when an attacker strikes the ball into the goal from within the striking circle.
Players may not shield the ball using their body or stick. All players must have an equal chance to play the ball.
Extra Time/Overtime
- In international
play, in classification rounds or games that require a winner to
advance to the next round, if the score is tied after regulation, extra
time of two, 7 1/2 minute periods is played. The game is ended when one
team scores a goal. If the score remains tied after overtime, penalty
strokes may be used to determine the winner. In penalty stroke
competition, each team selects five players to take alternating penalty
strokes against the opposing goalkeeper. In high
school federation play, if the score is tied after regulation time has
expired, an overtime period of two, 10-minute halves is played with
each team reducing the number of players to 7 per side. If the score
remains tied after overtime, penalty strokes may be used to determine
the winner. In penalty stroke competition, each team selects five
players to take alternating penalty strokes against the opposing
goalkeeper.
Fouls
A player may not
- Shield or obstruct
the ball from an opponent with the body or stick. All players must have
an equal chance to gain control of the ball as it is dribbled or passed
down the field. Play the ball with the rounded side of the stick.
- Interfere in the game without a stick
Charge, hit, shove or trip an opponent
- Play the ball in a potentially dangerous way.
Use the foot or leg to support the stick in order to resist an opponent
- Raise the stick in a dangerous or intimidating manner while approaching, attempting to play or stop the ball
Advance the ball by any means other than with the stick.
- Stop or deflect the ball in the air or on the ground with any part of the body
Hit, hook, hold or interfere with an opponents stick: Free Hit
- A free hit is awarded to the non-offending side following an infraction and are usually taken at the spot the foul occurs.
No player of the opposing team may be within 5 yards of the ball when hit.
- The
ball must be stationary and the striker must push or hit it. The hitter
may not replay the ball until another player has touched it. If the infraction is committed by a defender within the shooting circle, the attacking team is awarded a penalty corner.
Soccer Field Dimensions And Markings Explained
Soccer field dimensions are anything but straightforward. Unlike the playing surfaces for football, basketball, hockey, tennis and most other sports, not all soccer pitches are created equally. FIFA does not stipulate the specific size of a football pitch, instead allowing a range of lengths and widths.
That said, there are requirements that must be met for every soccer pitch, many of which are more specific when it comes to international matches.
Let’s start with soccer field dimensions. As put forth by FIFA, these are the maximum and minimum lengths and widths for a soccer pitch.
Soccer Field Dimensions
Length (touch line)
- Minimum: 100 yards (90 meters)
- Maximum: 130 yards (120 meters)
Width (goal line)
- Minimum: 50 yards (45 meters)
- Maximum: 100 yards (90 meters)
This means, in theory, soccer could be played on a square pitch of 100 yards by 100 yards. More likely, it’s a rectangle, the field longer than it is wide.
For international matches the pitch must fall in a more specific range, though there is still wiggle room.
International Soccer Field Dimensions
Length (touch line)
- Minimum: 110 yards (100 meters)
- Maximum: 120 yards (110 meters)
Width (goal line)
- Minimum: 70 yards (64 meters)
- Maximum: 80 yards (75 meters)
Soccer field dimensions can have a large effect on how teams play, as Tottenham’s temporary move to Wembley Stadium illustrated.
Soccer pitches can also be of various surfaces, be it natural grass or artificial turf.

Unlike the dimensions of the entire field, the markings on the field have specific dimensions that must be adhered to exactly. They are as follows:
Soccer Field Dimensions Inside The Field Of Play
Center Circle
- 10-yard radius (9.15 meters)
Goal Area
- Two lines at right angles 6 yards (5.5 meters) on either side of the goal posts extending 6 yards onto the pitch to create a rectangle.
Penalty Area
- Two lines at right angles 18 yards (16.5 meters) on either side of the goal posts extending 18 yards onto the pitch and connected to form a rectangle. (Fun fact: The shape of the 18-yard box wasn’t finalized until 1937.)
Penalty Spot
- A mark is made 12 yards (11 meters) from the center of the goal to denote from where penalty kicks are taken.
Penalty Arc
- An arc with a radius of 10 yards (9.15 meters) extending from the penalty spot is drawn only outside the penalty area.
Flag Posts
- Flags not less than 5 feet (1.5 meters) high with a non-pointed top and flag are to be placed at each corner.
Corner Arc
- A quarter circle with a radius of 1 yard (1 meter) is drawn inside the field of play around each corner.
Additionally, optional marks off the field of play can be made 10 yards (9.15 meters) from the corner to ensure defenders are far enough away from a corner kick.
The goal itself is perhaps the most important aspect of the pitch, and it has exact specifications for size. It is placed on the center of the goal line. Goal posts can be square, rectangular, round or elliptical in shape and must not be dangerous to players.
Soccer Goal Dimension
Width
Height
These goal dimensions are measured from the inside of one post to the other for width and the bottom of the crossbar to the ground. If the posts are rounded in any way, the largest part of the post is to be used for the measurement. Both goalposts and crossbar must be the same size (width and depth), which is not to exceed 5 inches (12 centimeters).
Goalposts and crossbars must be white. A net (also white) can be attached to the goal so long as it does not interfere with play. Goals must be securely anchored to the ground, meaning portable goals can only be used if they will not budge during play.

Oh but we’re not done. There are more dimensions to discuss! We can’t leave out the soccer ball itself, which must be spherical and made of leather or some other suitable material.
Soccer Ball Dimensions
Circumference
- Maximum: 28 inches (70 centimeters)
- Minimum: 27 inches (68 centimeters)
Weight
- Maximum: 16 ounces (450 grams)
- Minimum: 14 ounces (410 grams)
Pressure
- Equal to 0.6-1.1 atmosphere at sea level: 8.5-15.6 pounds per square inch (600-1,100 grams per square centimeter)
Whew, I think we did it. That’s all the soccer field dimensions you’ll ever need. At least until we start playing moon soccer or something and FIFA decides to switch it up.
Of course, that doesn’t mean you can’t make your own dimensions to fit your location, whether it’s your living room floor, back yard, school recess area or train station. Don’t let the man keep you down when you just wanna play some footie.
The world is your soccer pitch! But the floor is lava, so watch out.

Field Measurements – Uttar Pradesh Hockey
Most hockey field dimensions were originally fixed using whole numbers of imperial measures. Nevertheless, metric measurements are now the official dimensions as laid down by the International Hockey Federation (FIH) in the “Rules of Hockey”. The pitch is a 91.4 m × 55 m (100.0 yd × 60.1 yd) rectangular field. At each end is a goal 2.14 m (7 ft) high and 3.66 m (12 ft) wide, as well as lines across the field 22.90 m (25 yd) from each end-line (generally referred to as the 23-metre lines or the 25-yard lines) and in the center of the field. A spot 0.15 m (6 in) in diameter, called the penalty spot or stroke mark, is placed with its centre 6.40 m (7 yd) from the centre of each goal. The shooting circle is 15 m (16 yd) from the base line.
Playing Surface
Historically the game developed on natural grass turf. In the early 1970s, “synthetic grass” fields began to be used for hockey, with the first Olympic Games on this surface being held at the 1976 Montreal edition. Synthetic pitches are now mandatory for all international tournaments and for most national competitions. While hockey is still played on traditional grass fields at some local levels and lesser national divisions, it has been replaced by synthetic surfaces almost everywhere in the western world. There are three main types of artificial hockey surface:[15]
- Unfilled or water-based – artificial fibres that are densely packed for stabilisation, requires irrigation or watering to avoid pitch wear
- Dressed or sand-dressed – artificial fibres can be less densely packed and sand supports the fibres for part of the pile depth
- Filled or sand-filled – artificial fibres can be longer and less densely packed and sand supports the fibres for 100% of the pile depth
Since the 1970s, sand-based pitches have been favoured as they dramatically speed up the game. However, in recent years there has been a massive increase in the number of “water-based” artificial turfs. Water-based synthetic turfs enable the ball to be transferred more quickly than on sand-based surfaces. It is this characteristic that has made them the surface of choice for international and national league competitions. Water-based surfaces are also less abrasive than sand-based surfaces and reduce the level of injury to players when they come into contact with the surface. The FIH are now proposing that new surfaces being laid should be of a hybrid variety which require less watering. This is due to the negative ecological effects of the high water requirements of water-based synthetic fields. It has also been stated that the decision to make artificial surfaces mandatory greatly favoured more affluent countries who could afford these new pitches
Standard sizes of a hockey rink – InterEco
Undoubtedly, Canada is considered to be the homeland of ice hockey. As you know, winters are as long there as in our country. Therefore, it is not surprising that Russians are addicted to winter sports. Especially for a team skating game with sticks and a puck. For example, some prefer the role of fans. Others are accustomed to going out on the ice themselves, spending leisure time for the benefit of body and spirit. The minimum dimensions of a hockey rink for mass sports activities are such that you can find a place for it even in a small yard. So, the InterEco group of companies offers options 10 * 20, 15 * 30, 20 * 40 and 30 * 60 meters. Plus, there is a wide selection of equipment and all the necessary hockey equipment for arranging a hockey rink.
Hockey rink dimensions – federation and league
Strict regulation of the size of sports ice arenas does not exist even at the IIHF. The main international organization for ice hockey and inline hockey allows the construction of ice hockey rinks in a range of sizes: width 26-30 m and length 56-61 m.The NHL, by contrast, has firmly established the standard dimensions of the hockey rink, assuming a length of 200 and a width of 85 feet (60.96 * 25.90 m). The federation and the league also do not converge in the radius of the circular arc, which should round the corners of the court – from 7 to 8.5 m and 28 feet (8.53 m), respectively.
Reasons for the different sizes of hockey courts
The noticeable difference in width is due to an equally clear difference in the manner of play of representatives of world hockey and their American counterparts. Enhaelovskie players prefer an aggressive style of behavior on the ice.In turn, which is facilitated by smaller hockey rinks:
- power wrestling;
- lightning shots at goal;
- active play at the boards.
All this clearly manifests itself in almost every match of the National Hockey League in the form of small skirmishes, hot battles and simply banal fights. The International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) considers the combination game to be more spectacular. In particular, both in defense and attack (the two main types of hockey tactics). In the game of most countries of the world, positional attacks can be observed more often. This is when the players lead the puck for a long time, make multiple passes, implementing well-thought-out coaching plans (schemes) of the game. The larger size of the ice arena provides just enough room for a variety of maneuvers.
Hockey rink dimensions from IIHF
The above range of sizes allowed by the International Federation has an internal gradation depending on the level of matches. For example:
- according to the rules of the federation, the size of a hockey court 58 * 30 m is considered desirable;
- official competitions under the auspices of the IIHF can be held on grounds 60-61 m long and 29-30 m wide;
- Other competitions are allowed to be held on courts with other parameters, but not less than 40 * 20 m.
The size of a junior ice hockey rink is no different from the size of an arena for adult players. In our country, the Russian Ice Hockey Federation (FHR) is involved in organizing and conducting matches of the Junior Hockey League Championship.
Hockey rink size, hockey rink dimensions
Before building a hockey rink, it is imperative to take into account the increase in the size of the hockey rink (length and width), because the place for fixing the hockey rink system must be taken into account.Usually the outer perimeter is increased to 1 meter.
Standard hockey rink corresponds to the dimensions:
hockey rink 60 by 30 meters, with a radius of curvature of 7.5 meters
or minimum size:
hockey rink 56 by 26 meters, with a radius of curvature of 7.5 meters.
Our company is engaged in the production of ice hockey courts with also non-standard sizes:
Hockey rink 56 by 20 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 46 by 26 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 40 by 20 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 40 by 15 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 38 by 18 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 30 by 15 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
Hockey rink 24 by 12 meters, with a radius of curvature of 4 meters
The dimensions of the hockey rink vary in the rules:
– NHL (National Hockey League – NHL) and
– IIHF (International Ice Hockey Federation, IIHF)
According to the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation, a hockey rink can be with a maximum size of 61 x 30 meters, and with a minimum allowable size – a hockey rink 56 x 26 meters.Official competitions held under the auspices of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) are allowed in lengths of 60-61 meters and a width of 29-30 meters.
The NHL (National Hockey League) rules prescribe the size of the hockey rink 60.96 meters long and 25.90 meters wide, resulting in a hockey rink already 4 meters wide.
It is believed that the smaller size of the hockey rink increases the players’ power struggles, hockey goal shots. And the larger the size of the hockey rink, the larger for the combination hockey game. The corners of the hockey rink are rounded with a radius of 7 to 8.5 meters. Hockey goals must be located at the edges of the hockey rink. The height of the boards for playing hockey is from 1.17 to 1.22 meters according to the rules of the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF), and according to the rules of the NHL (National Hockey League), the hockey board is from 1.02 to 1.22 meters high.
Hockey rink dimensions
Markings are made with colored stripes under a transparent layer of ice
Markings are applied to the surface of the ice hockey field; most of the game lovers will easily name the purpose of these signs. We will tell you more about the location:
Gate lines
Red lines 5 cm wide, drawn at a distance of 4 meters from the side board.
Blue lines
Blue lines 30 cm wide. These lines are drawn in such a way as to divide the distance between the goal lines into three equal parts (“Defense Zone”, “Neutral Zone” and “Attack Zone”).
Central Line
Red line 30cm wide, applied in the middle of the hockey rink.
Throw-in Points
The center throw-in point is the blue circle marked in the center of the playing court (diameter 30cm). The center point is inside a circle with a diameter of 900cm, drawn in blue. Line thickness 5cm.
Face-off dots in the neutral zone are red dots 60 cm in diameter, applied 150 cm from each blue line.
The end points are red circles 60 cm in diameter. They are located on both sides of the gate, at a distance of 10 meters from the side walls and 8 meters from the transverse ones. The points are located inside a circle with a diameter of 9 meters, marked with a 5cm line, in addition, special markings are drawn around the throw-in point (see the picture) for the correct positioning of the players.
Referee area
A semicircle with a radius of 3 meters, drawn with a line 5 cm wide in red, in front of the table of the secretary of the game.
Gate area
The area in front of the gate, painted blue. The goal area is limited by a semicircle with a radius of 1.8 meters drawn with a 5cm line.
90,000 KHL moves to Canadian sites. – News – Press Center
The “Striped Hockey” blog on Sports.ru explains what it means and what kind of hockey grounds there are.
World Cup will now also play on such.
You’ve probably heard important news – starting in 2020, the world ice hockey championships will be held at Canadian sites. The IIHF’s compactness trends were also supported in the KHL: at least 14 clubs (Avangard, Dinamo Minsk and Avtomobilist are still thinking) will play home matches on a smaller box next season. In our country, they reacted to this in different ways: Vyacheslav Bykov believes that this will untie the hands of the attacking teams and remove the fuss in the middle zone, and the veteran veteran Vitaly Davydov, on the contrary, is sure that small playgrounds are created exclusively for “oak cutters”.
We decided to explain to you in a simple way how the four-meter difference affects hockey.
The first rule to remember is that the court doesn’t make the game. It all depends solely on the class of performing hockey players. Elite players are equally effective on boxes of all sizes. The simplest examples are Artemy Panarin, Evgeny Dadonov, and, in principle, any of ours or a European star who tears up the NHL. And the Canadian national team, which took gold in Sochi, did not suffer from fear of big ice – the class of its players could be seen from space.
Therefore, when you are told that Ovechkin plays poorly at the World Championships because of the “European” box, you can safely laugh – this is not so. What’s the matter then? It’s simple – the size of the court affects the tactical structure of the team and the style of play: tactics that work on a wide box turn out to be ineffective on Canadians, and vice versa.
European site
Size: 60×30 meters
Another name is an airfield.A classic court that is found in most European leagues and which still exists in the KHL. The widest version of the ice rink – considered the most comfortable for the attackers.
There is some truth in this: it is more difficult for the defenders to cover the entire width of the middle and defense zones, which creates more opportunities for the attacking team. Plus, it is somewhat easier to stretch the opponent in the majority – you can stand wider, spread the “envelope” over the zone and roll the puck until your partner is taken out to an empty net.
The reality is somewhat harsher: a large platform encourages passive and primitive play in every possible way and does not dispose to conduct a power struggle. A simple and understandable example – the most terrible versions of defensive hockey Bilyaletdinov and the Finland-2019 national team won in just such a space.
30 meters wide makes the corners of the box a safety zone: move the puck there and the gate will be out of danger. There is also no particular incentive for high pressure – it is easier for the pressure to pass through the pass, which means the team will prefer to roll back to the middle zone, which turns the match into a dull fuss.It is said that the players in these areas can play better at passing, but this is another misconception.
Puck control primarily depends on the performers, and not on the size of the free zones. Conventional SKA or Avangard are equally good at both European and Canadian sites. Likewise, the “lace” hockey of the USSR national team was no longer associated with the size of the court, but with the old rules of hockey, the class of players and the model of the game.
Finnish site
Size: 60×28 meters
Mid-size solution between NHL and Europe. The Finns chose it because they wanted to make the game a little more dynamic while preserving the safety of the players. Minus two meters – and it is already easier to press and strain the goalkeeper with sketches, even from the corners. Throwing into the zone also works somewhat differently – it is achieved due to a more rigid arc of curvature of the sides.
Finnish boxes are a good compromise for those who are very afraid of losing the “combination game”.
Tampere Ice Palace, Finland
Canadian site
Size: 60×26 meters
The only real and legitimate hockey rink size.It was with this size that they started in Canada, when the game moved from ponds and lakes to stadiums – such was the size of the Victoria rink in Montreal, where the first official match was held.
What does a small playground give? First of all, dynamism and the right to make mistakes. Dynamism is achieved due to the reduced size of the middle zone and a smaller width – it is convenient to press, it is more difficult for the opponent to stop the attacking team in the middle zone, and in defense you will not sit out – they will definitely punish with a stray shot from the blue or even from the corner. And you don’t have to worry if you fail positionally – if you know how to skate, then you will definitely get your opponent (only if it’s not McDavid).
The throw-in works in a completely different way: the puck flies along the rounding even harder than on the Finnish box. How does this difference arise? The radius of curvature is the same, but the length of the arc is different. Plus ricochets from the boards – on the European court nothing threatens the goalkeeper if the puck flew to the side board, and on the “Canadian” ice a throw from the board may be an assist.
Another important nuance is the distance from the front side to the goal line. In the NHL, it is less, so the goalkeeper and attackers are not very comfortable outside the goal – they have to act faster. It is worth remembering about the height of the sides: overseas they are slightly lower – there are more chances to send your opponent to the bench with a spectacular force.
There is a myth that the game on such sites is simpler – don’t believe it. Those who do not have time to make decisions quickly have to simplify the game: there are fewer places, there are more chances to miss the power one, so if the head does not have time to calculate the moves, it is better to act easier. The most striking example is Vadim Shipachev, who, from great to exile in the farm, is four meters wide of the ice field.
Another myth about combinations – they say that they play more beautifully in Europe. It’s hard to believe if you watch matches from Europe and the KHL as a whole – the percentage of meaningful positional attacks there is unlikely to exceed that in the NHL. Real life example: Try to play with friends on a public ice rink – just with different sizes of the playing field. The smaller the area of ice, the faster you need to think in order to look for a continuation of the attack option, besides, you have to beat a lot individually, which also increases the degree of struggle.
The combination of these factors makes the “Canadian” grounds the most optimal for playing hockey – in addition to historical identity, this size of ice gives the game maximum dynamism, which attracts spectators and allows players to act in a spectacular manner. The Canadian court does not at all welcome a passive style of play – no, it is possible, but it looks completely wild, although it looks like a native one on European ice.
So it becomes clear why the IIHF is going to come to Canadian boxes. The world championships are striking in their dullness even in top matches – something urgently needs to be done with this.
The desire of the KHL is also clear – in the new season the league is going with a new marking, and SKA announced that it is moving to the Canadian site. But the problem of unification of ice fields remains – it sounds crazy, but in the new season all three types of ice fields will again be represented in the KHL. I would like to believe that not for long.

90,000 How the size of hockey rinks affect performance in the KHL, statistics, analysis – March 1, 2021
The trend of changing the size of rinks in the KHL is far from commonplace. A couple of years ago, only the Far Eastern “Admiral” and “Amur” played on the “Canadian” grounds, and both teams from Tatarstan + “Vityaz” tried the middle – the Finnish variation.Everything has changed just recently – now it is with great difficulty that you can meet teams that play home matches on European ice fields.
One important myth must be eliminated: the concept of the “Finnish format” did not come about because of the real state of affairs in the elite Finnish league, but as a result of rumors about an allegedly special Finnish type of hockey rinks during the Russian Super League. Someone decided that in Finland they all play on 60/28 courts, but in fact there were only a few such teams.
Who will win the Gagarin Cup?
Who will win the Gagarin Cup?
The concept of a “Canadian” site is also not entirely correct. Historically, this ice is 56 by 26 meters, while 61 by 26 is the format of the National Hockey League. To the already “old-timers” of Canadian size in the KHL “Amur” and “Admiral” were soon joined by “Barys”, SKA, Moscow “Dynamo” and HC “Sochi”.
After some time, the so-called “Finnish” format became almost the most popular: 11 clubs took over the “Finnish” club, including Metallurg Magnitogorsk and Siberia.By 2019, for example, Salavat Yulaev and Jokerit continued to play at the airfields, but already in 2020 they also decided to move to the Finnish site: thus, the European format in the KHL has almost completely disappeared.
Sport24 discussed why the clubs decided to abandon the European options, which format is better and whether there are statistical differences on the ice with different box sizes.
In order to answer this question, the statistical partner InStat must be used.We conducted a small study of the team statistics of three clubs: some of them played on European grounds, and then switched to other formats altogether, while others, like, for example, Khabarovsk Amur, have played on the Canadian since 2017. We did not take into account the difference in styles and tactical views of different coaches, but tried to focus solely on the difference in performance at the “airfields” and afterwards – on other types of ice.
Statistical regularities
The average number of throws to the onset of coronavirus madness for two teams on different types of courts was correlated as follows: at 26 meters (Canadian) 108.4 shots per game on average, at 28 meters (Finnish) – 109.4, while in the European format the indicator exceeded 110. On shots on target, the situation is similar: 58.4 shots on the narrowest clearing, 58.0 on the Finnish type and as much as 59.5 on the European ones. All this debunks the myth that on small grounds they supposedly shoot more at goal – statistics hints at a diametrically opposite picture.
Considering the difference in the formats of the sites, one cannot fail to note such an important indicator as strength techniques. There are more hits on narrow sites than on Europeans – 27.6 versus 26.2. For some reason, at 28 meters, strength techniques are done much less, namely, 24.7 on average. We assume that this is due to the tactics of teams playing at home on Finnish courts. It is also important that strength techniques are considered differently in different cities: somewhere every touch, somewhere almost hits from the NHL of the nineties are considered power.
Rene Fasel once said: “Which league is the best in the world? NHL.Where do the world’s best players play? In the NHL. What court do they play on? 61 meters by 26. When I see Ovechkin and other guys, I call them artists. Why not give them what they are used to so they can show that they are artists? Why should we protect less skilled players and play big and take away the advantage of artists? We play for the fans. I’ve watched a lot of the NHL this year, it’s incredible. Yes, some of the 82 matches of the regular season are not very interesting, but the playoffs are great! Speed, technology, brains! Players think so fast! Now they play at the highest level, this can be seen both in this world championship and in the NHL.And the MFM in North America is much more interesting, in Europe at large venues everything is completely different. I understand that not all leagues will like this, but we are not asking them to move to small venues, it costs a lot of money. But for the sake of the future of the game, for the sake of the NHL artists, we simply have to play on small venues. ”.
Vladimir Bezzubov, photo.khl.ru
What can this statement speak about? First of all, that the still acting head of the IIHF admires and focuses on the NHL. And there, as we remember, the area is narrow. It was after this statement by Fasel, dated 2019, that the decision was made to hold the world championships in reduced glades.
Among other things, on the “Canadian” fields you can see a rebound from the headboard, which will lead, if not to a goal, then to a dangerous moment. It is almost unrealistic to sit there in a defensive position. The opponent will not miss the opportunity to flash your goalkeeper from the blue or even from the board from the crawl zone.
Comparison of Amur with the clubs that have made the transition to a new type of site
Let’s turn again to advanced metrics from InStat. We decided to compare the statistics of “Salavat Yulaev”, “Jokerit” and “Amur” in the 2017/18 season and now in order to determine the impact of changes in sites on statistical indicators. “Jokerit” has been playing in the KHL from the very beginning with about the same hockey, “Salavat” has always been dependent on Umark and Hartikainen, and now the influence of Harti’s line (but already without Umark) is absolute there. That is why statistics on different types of sites should reflect the picture without unnecessary problem factors. “Cupid” has been playing on a narrow box for four years already, which is why in their comparison with the Finns and Ufa, it seems that the truth is hidden.
hcsalavat.ru
The Ufa club in the 2017/18 season, under the guidance of the first foreign coach on the home court, inflicted an average of 55 shooting attempts, of which 30 shots reached the goal line. For comparison, now Salavat has 55 attempts and 29 shots on target. In terms of power techniques, the situation is even more interesting: in the Westerlund season, the team at home hit an average of 16 times, while now they are the softest team in the East with 11 hits. In terms of the set of performers, the team did not fundamentally differ, so a simple conclusion can be drawn: the transition to another site did not bring any global changes for Ufa – the size of the site does not make a difference, and tactics and selection of performers are still important.
It seemed that the Finnish “Jokerit”, by definition, had to play on Finnish boxes: in reality, the club from Helsinki switched to this type only from the beginning of this season. In the 2017/18 season (which we took as a benchmark), Jukka Yalonen’s charges at the Hartwall Arena threw 63 times towards the goal. Of these, 34 shots reached the alignment. On the Finnish type of ice field, the situation has changed very seriously: the number of throwing attempts has decreased by eight and the number of shots on target by five. We did not find a connection between the changed tactical pattern or the set of players: globally the selection of hockey players for the last four seasons is similar for the Finns, and the hockey of Maryamaki and Yalonen differs quite seriously. The figures show that there was no difference over the past two seasons under Maryamaki, which means that the transition to the “Finnish” format has passed as painlessly as possible.
Far Eastern grounds are always famous for the fact that they throw a lot there, hit a lot and throw in the puck even more. In fact, everything turned out to be not so simple: they throw in Khabarovsk, as it turned out, not much more than in other clubs. Yes, there is indeed a significant advantage in power, but all this can be explained not so much by the “Canadian” format of the courts as by the weak selection of players: when it does not work out at the proper level and consistently score, you have to use all physical resources to trample your opponent into the ice.We are more than confident that if we put a more skilled team in these geographic conditions and in this arena, there will be no strong deviations from the variance in the league average in the statistics.
In the 2017/18 season, “Amur” Khabarovsk made an average of 53 throwing attempts, of which 30 reached the goal line. This season’s numbers are slightly different: 58 attempts for 30 shots on target. The allowed shots on their own goal have also increased – most likely this is due to the diametrically opposed hockey philosophies of the coaches.Martemyanov never concealed that his teams are trying to use every chance and do not want to throw for the sake of a throw, while not forgetting to play strictly in defense, not allowing opponents to turn around. Under Svetlov, the team acts more mobile, while its actions accelerate joint throws in the match.
hcamur.ru
Conclusion
Speaking about the tendencies of changing hockey rinks, one important thing should not be forgotten – the class of performing hockey players and playing philosophy are much more valuable than the type of court. The court doesn’t make the game at all. As an example, the Canadian Olympic team can always be cited, which has been playing in the NHL all its life, but without difficulty took the gold medal of the Sochi Games, playing at the European “airfield”.
The large court encourages passivity in the actions of the players, allowing coaches such as Bilyaletdinov to go into as much defense as possible. That is why different types of ice fields partly influence tactical formations: somewhere on a European you can stand wider, somewhere there will be a place for an “envelope” in the majority – but what is important is that this practically does not affect statistics and the result.
iihf.com
All this leads to a single global conclusion: on whatever type of ice fields the game takes place, the only significant factors will be the high average level of hockey players and tactical formations. It is necessary to rely on international experience in terms of hockey rules so that at the world championships Russians understand why and how they are being judged. At the same time, if the whole world plays on the “Canadian” sites, but the KHL does not, this will not lead to a deterioration in the quality of the game – in fact, the size of the site is just tinsel, behind which you cannot hide the level of hockey in the league that is decreasing every year and other large-scale Russian problems.

What is the difference between hockey rinks in Russia and the USA? | FAQ | 2014 Olympics
On February 15, the Russians will play a hockey match with the US national team. As in any match, the result of the game can be influenced by the composition of the national team, as well as, oddly enough, the hockey rink.
Traditionally, the strongest hockey players who are its citizens are called up to the national team of any country. At the same time, outside of international competitions, they can play for clubs located in different countries. For example, in the National Hockey League (clubs from the USA and Canada) or in the Continental Hockey League (clubs from a number of countries, but primarily from Russia).
Often the participation of players in national team tournaments (where they come from their clubs at the time of the holding) is accompanied by difficulties in adapting to the size of the site. The fact is that in all tournaments taking place in Europe, the “European format” of the hockey rink is used.It is larger than the one used in Canada and the United States. As a result, a player playing for North American clubs will need to adapt their play to a different size venue if they are in Europe. The situation is the same with Europeans coming to North America.
Aif.ru explains what are the main differences between sites and whether they can affect the game.
European and North American ice hockey rinks
The average size of Russian sites is 60 by 30 meters, and North American sites are 60 by 26.
US & Canada site sizes
- Length – 60.96 m Width – 25.91 m
- Total area – 1579 sq. m.
Dimensions of sites in Europe and Russia
- Length – 60 m.Breadth – 30 m.
- Total area – 1800 sq. m.
Thus, the American hockey rink format is 4 meters narrower than the European one, which directly affects the game itself.
How does the size of the court affect the game?
On a small court (with the same number of players and basically the same rules), the players have much less free space and very little time to make a decision. Accordingly, the speed of playing on American-format boxes is significantly higher, and the hockey itself is more aggressive.
From a defensive standpoint, an American-sized arena is more convenient: the defenders need to “close” much less space, and there are many opportunities to impose on the attackers a fight in the corners of the court.
But from the point of view of attack, the European format is better. Such an ice arena provides more room for maneuvers and playing combinations, and the defenders have to “cover” large spaces, which gives an advantage to the attackers.
Traditionally, the size of the courts has influenced the formation of playing styles.
The so-called “Canadian” style includes a lot of power fighting (due to the small space), a large number of shots at the goal from any position (due to the smaller distance to the goal).
“Soviet” or “European” consists of a large number of multi-move combinations that can be played over a wider area.
Although styles of play partially merge, and the best teams use, depending on the situation, elements of both styles, the size of the court still plays an important role in how exactly the teams play.

Hockey rink sizes – BOOKCAMP.RU
What is the difference between a European, Canadian and Finnish ice hockey rink? In this article, we will explain all the differences to finally understand this issue!
To start comparing different sites, you should immediately indicate: any hockey rink is just a place for hockey – the game is made directly by people . Top hockey players, after a little adaptation, can perform equally well on sites of any size.
European Hockey Rink
Size: 60×30 meters
The European site, or aerodrome , can be found in almost all European championships. Due to the width, the attackers are most comfortable to sit there. As for the defenders, it is extremely difficult for them to keep track of the middle and defense lines. This gives the forwards more variation to create chances.
Due to the width, it is most comfortable for the attackers to sit there. As for the defenders, it is extremely difficult for them to keep track of the middle and defense lines. This gives the forwards more variation to create chances.
On such ice it is easier to manage most of the attacks . You can position the hockey players wide and wait for them, after the roll, to bring the player to an empty frame. In addition to the offensive bonuses, the European variant encourages simple and straightforward play.
It is also worth mentioning that the IIHF Congress decided that from 2020 the World Championships will be held at Canadian venues.
Finnish Hockey Rink
Size: 60×28 meters.
This type of box is a compromise version of between the “Canadian” and the European site. It appeared in Finland thanks to the desire of the local leadership to speed up the game without losing good conditions for hockey players. The width was reduced by two meters, which allowed the players to press and reach the goalkeeper more often after throwing. Due to the better rounding of the sides, the injection into the zone also changed.
Canadian Hockey Rink
Size: 60.96×25.90 meters.
The Canadian ice hockey rink has a major plus – dynamism . It is more difficult for defensive teams to play on the Canadian due to the reduced center zone and reduced width. In this variant, it is really extremely difficult to play half a match in defense: you will definitely get a powerful shot from the blue line, you will have to run to recoup.
The puck has a more rigid trajectory after throwing in than on the Finnish site.It is impossible not to note the distance from the front side to the goal line. In the NHL, it is shorter: the goalkeeper and attacking hockey players are not very comfortable working outside the box – you need to react with lightning speed and make decisions . If you do not have time, you will have to simplify the game and risk quickly missing a couple of pucks.
.
