Conference: Southern Athletic Association
Coach: Buck Buchanan
’14 Record: 6-4 (3-3)
The Hendrix Warriors made big strides in 2014, competing for a conference title in just their second year since reviving the football program.
“After a 4-0 start, we struggled with our depth and playing on the road, but we were able to achieve our first winning season since 1938 and first six-win season since 1937,” Coach Buck Buchanan said. “We were the No. 1 offense in the Southern Athletic Association (462 yards per game), and our defense was more than 100 yards per game better than our inaugural year. We topped most of the SAA offensive statistics and set many team and individual offensive records. We were also ranked nationally in total offense (27th), passing offense (15th) and first downs (20th). ”
Ten starters return on the prolific offense, including junior quarterback Seth Peters. As a sophomore, Peters was named the SAA Offensive Player of the Year. His 73.1 completion percentage was tops in the NCAA among all divisions. He also set the single game SAA passing record with 451 against Birmingham Southern. Junior Dayton Winn returns at running back after rushing for more than 1,000 yards last fall. The Warriors boast a talented receiver corps with sophomore Ben Leudtke, juniors Ethan Hoppe and Spencer Smith and freshman Nate Hodapp.
“We have the best receiver corps in the conference and have and will continue to play nine to 12 receivers in every ball game,” Buchanan said.
Sophomore Doug Phillips returns at tight end, and juniors Jared Lincoln, Brooks Billings, Max Cassidy, Zach Tuttle and Trent Middleton and sophomore Sam Struebing will all rotate on the offensive line.
Juniors Harrison Newton, Stephen Stearman, Jake Falleur and Tyler Clifton and sophomore Gray Stanton fill out the defensive line. Juniors Thomas Eddlemon and John Donald start as inside linebackers, and junior Ben Cunningham and sophomore Judson Jones start as outside linebackers. Junior Shaquille Grant and sophomore Anthony Tufu man the corners, and senior Caleb Shannon and sophomore Kody Smith are the safeties.
Juniors Steve Crenshaw (place kicker) and Spencer Smith (punter) return to handle the kicking duties. Crenshaw was the SAA Special Teams Player of the Year last fall. Winn serves as the Warriors’ return specialist.
“We expect to continue to improve on defense and continue to stretch the field on offense,” Buchanan said. “We will continue to be very aggressive on both sides of the ball, and it should be even more fun to watch. Our goal is to be the best version of ourselves each time we step on the field, and in doing that, we expect to compete for a conference title and a chance to go to the NCAA playoffs.
“The offensive and defensive lines have 20 games experience under their belt along with some depth reinforcements from this year’s recruiting class. We have the top quarterback in the league along with an extremely talented receiver corps. We have the best kicker in the league, but need to improve our overall special teams play in order to make our team better.”

Chad Smith Recalls Red Hot Chili Pepper Audition, How The Band Hated Him At First
Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has been with the band since 1988, but getting into the band wasn’t exactly a sure thing.
Smith told Rolling Stone that when he auditioned for the band, they were less than impressed.
“I had long hair and a bandanna and shorts and a cut-off Metallica t-shirt and I’m six-three and they’re not tall gentlemen,” recalled Smith. “They just looked at me like, get this guy out of here. But I went in and everything back then was fast, like James Brown on speed. I started doing my thing, and they were like, ‘This guy’s not following, he’s leading.’ I remember Anthony [Kiedis] just running around the room laughing.”
So, how did Smith win the Chili Peppers over?
“I remember we did the Hendrix cover, ‘Fire.’ And the producer at the time, Michael Beinhorn, was there, and he told them, ‘That’s your guy.’ So I owe Michael,” said Smith. “Then they were like, ‘You gotta shave your head.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m not shaving my f—ing beautiful flowing frizzy ’80s locks.’ And they were like, ‘We respect that.’ But here’s the thing, I had played in clubs right out of high school for eight years in Detroit. So that was the 10,000 hours thing. I was prepared. There’s no shortcut to that.”
As previously reported, RHCP is heading out on their very first stadium tour of the United States in 2022 and their first tour since guitarist John Frusciante rejoined the band. Tickets went on sale to the general public today (October 15. ) for complete ticket details, head over to RedHotChiliPeppers.com.

Abstract
Cursed by the evil witch Quen Ivar Grayklock must live forever either in the form of an eagle or in human form. Ivar receives a reward for the victory at Mowbray and by order of William Rufus, son of the Conqueror and King of England, he ends his lonely existence. Ivar would give his soul for an estate where he could start over and leave his past behind.Wilhelm not only gave him Olnwick and ordered to build a castle, but also offered Tyson’s granddaughter as his wife! Lady Aleida is exactly what Ivar wants – beautiful, absurd and passionate. Ivar is a kind and passionate lover at night, but every morning he disappears. Even worse, after nights of passion and love, Ivar suddenly stops touching her. Confused by his dark vision of the future, Ivar knows that he cannot condemn Aleida or future generations to his fate. Aleida might hold the key to Quen’s spell, but will she free them, or will they be forever mired in darkness?
Legend
In the early days of raids on Britain, up to Haykon Iron Toe (Iron Finger), the High Leader of Norway, there were rumors, told by his Saxon slaves, that the people of Odinsbrigg in the Kingdom of England had a great treasure. Deciding to get it, he sent the most ferocious warriors, commanded by Brand Ainarsson, who was called the Hammer of Thor, to conquer the village and bring gold to him. But the treasure was guarded not only by men armed with swords, but also by the witchcraft of the witch Quen, who created warriors from her blood and sent her son to command them.
When Brand saw that his warriors were killed, rage seized him, and he gained the power of ten berserkers. He lunged at the ghosts and cut, chopped, until he hit hard flesh, and he killed Quen’s son.
In a rage with grief, Quen used magic, captured Brand and those of his people whose hearts were still beating, took them to the treasure they had come to steal, and cursed them. She transformed them into the shadows of beasts, which were half animal, half human, each taking the form of their fylgja [1] , a spiritual companion whose image they wore on a chain. When finished, Quen took their amulets and scattered them on the ground, and took the people into the forest to be hunted.
When word of Brand’s fate reached Haykon, he trembled in fear and ordered his ships to sail, but a huge wave rose and his ship disappeared into the depths of the sea. He never found out how serious the curse of his warriors was, as Quen made them immortal so that their torment would continue. Forever.
Generations changed, the people of Odinsbrigg lost interest in their hunt, and Brand began to look for his warriors and gathered them together. But when the sun went down and rose, animals became people, people turned into beasts, and so on, and disgusting magic protected them from death, but not from pain. When it became clear that they could not live together, each warrior chose his own path. Before they parted ways, Brand vowed to his men that he would hunt Quen until he found her and make her pay for what she had done.
Years and centuries passed, and Brand was still hunting. Little by little, his warriors learned to live among people again. The first of these was Ivar, the son of Thorley, whose name was Greyklock (Gray Cloak), who turned into an eagle during the day …

Chapter 1
December 1095
Madness. That’s what it was.
Ivar stood in front of the keep [2] of Salisbury Castle – his heart was pounding as if he had taken part in a battle – and wondered what possessed him since he had come to this place.
In all these years after Odinsbrigg he had never been among so many people. Usually he was called somewhere to an isolated place – to a village chapel, to a small estate, to a forest clearing – and only a few confidants knew who he was and what he had done. When on rare occasions he dared to come to the city, he kept to the outskirts, where the shelter of the forest was only a few steps away. Now, he was here, under the tutelage of a powerful castle, with an army camped in the courtyard and throughout the city outside the walls. Every bone in his body screamed that this place was a trap, that he would be caught here within these walls, that the semblance of life that he had finally pieced together over the past three decades would be destroyed.
Yes, that was undoubtedly madness, but still he was going to go to the tower because William ordered him to come and he wanted to know why.Ivar took a deep breath and climbed the steps to the door.
“Sir Yvo de Vassi,” he informed the guards, using the name by which he was known to these Normans.
– Solar [3], – the man grumbled and opened the door.
The crowd caught Ivar’s breath: nobles, knights and servants moved and talked to each other, dogs fought for bones; 90,029 jongleur 90,023 [4] 90,024 90,030 played; and on top of all this is the smell of sweat, honey, grease and smoke. The memory of other times and other halls full of friends, acquaintances and relatives, now dead long ago, hit Ivar in the stomach like an armored fist, and he had to breathe air to stay on his feet. He crossed the hall without looking around and ran up the stairs. Entering the solar, he stopped a few paces from a ruddy barrel-shaped man playing some kind of board game and knelt down.
“You are late, de Vessy,” said William Rufus, son of the Conqueror and king of all England. “I told you to come to me on Friday.
– It’s still Friday, Your Grace.
– Just just, – grumbled, getting up, Wilhelm. He circled slowly around Ivar, his green slippers shuffling across the stone floor, his gaze drilling into the top of Ivar’s head.“The abbey bells were already ringing for the evening service.
– Yes, Your Grace. But you are not a monk.
The slippers stopped in Ivar’s field of vision, and he prepared to strike. This game, which he played with Wilhelm, was dangerous and could end badly at any moment – but not tonight. Instead, the king snorted with laughter.
– The Lord is a witness [5], no, – Wilhelm pushed Ivar with his hand covered with rings before kissing, then grabbed and with irritation raised him to his feet. – Get up, man. Get up. All the rest are out. I wish to speak privately with my gray knight.
The noble lords hesitated at the table, and Ivar knew: everyone was now looking at him appraisingly and wondered if this unknown upstart would challenge his position. Unlikely. A man could hardly defy anyone as he spent his days chasing pigeons.
– Get out! roared Wilhelm when his barons were unable to move fast enough. He jabbed a finger at the servant boy. – You. Fill my goblet before you leave.
The boy rushed to obey the order, while the lords, one after another, went out. When the door closed behind the servant, Wilhelm lifted the silvered goblet and drank from it, measuring out a new circle around Ivar, this time relatively close.
“Caution, people!”: How Hendrix went to civilian life
- Seva Novgorodtsev
- BBC, London
The late Jimi Hendrix is a brilliant left-hander of rock and roll guitars – all his short life he was interested in the ladies’ question, but from the American army he was discharged under the “blue” article.
The Sunday Times recently reported that Hendrix served as a paratrooper in the 101st Air Division and was discharged in 1962 at the age of 19.
Official biographers always wrote that he broke his leg after an unsuccessful parachute jump, but the truth turned out to be much more piquant and interesting, since he paints the future classic of rock in a creative light.
Jimi turned to an army psychiatrist with a confession that he had his fellow soldiers in erotic dreams at night.Especially one – he not only dreams, but simply does not get out of his head, neither at night nor during the day.
Jimi said that because of this love he lost 7 kilograms. The fact of losing weight was undeniable (Jimi, apparently, had to give up the army dessert for some time), the psychiatrist sounded the alarm, and Jimi, with a happy smile and a white ticket, went out to civilian life.
There are a number of inventions that people enjoy using with great pleasure, but the existence of which, before their invention, was completely unaware.
If asked in the 19th century – do customers want chewing gum, the answer would be outraged – what are we, cows, or something, to chew incessantly? But when they invented, they understood. We include a zipper, sticky notes with temporary adhesives, and even a car. “If I began to ask people then,” Henry Ford once said, “what they want, they would answer – swift horses.”
When my adopted daughter Anastasia was on her honeymoon in Egypt, she received another offer there.Rather, it was not her who was offered, but her husband: “Give me your woman for 47 camels.”
We then pondered the exact number – not fifty, not forty, but 47. Either the Egyptian groom so accurately calculated the feminine qualities of Anastasia, or he just had no more camels.
There was another similar case. Kenyan resident Kipkemoy Chepkurgor, a member of the village council, made an offer to President Clinton – 20 cows and 40 goats for his daughter Chelsea, whom he was ready to marry. He closely followed the fate of his alleged bride – he knew, for example, that she graduated from Oxford University.
In my opinion, Kipkemoy offered an unworthy price. For example, 47 camels were offered to us, and not some cows and goats, besides Anastasia had not graduated from the university yet.
But we didn’t agree anyway.

Jimi Hendrix: The Guitar That Changed the World
November 27 marks the 75th anniversary of the birth of one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time, Jimi Hendrix.Music columnist Vsevolod Baronin tells why he is not just a great musician, but a man thanks to whom the electric guitar has become a symbol of rock music forever.
During his incomplete 28 years of earthly life (even moreover, for its last four incomplete years), he demonstrated to the world, which at the end of the 60s was difficult to surprise with something, what it is – a real victorious sound of an electric guitar, and the significance of this instrument not just for rock music culture, but for world culture in general.
You can talk as much as you like about the mysteriousness of Jimi’s career and build a variety of conspiracy theories regarding his untimely death. But in fact, his lightning-fast stellar career, which amazed his contemporaries, was woven of two components: a sincere interest in music and constant self-improvement in it and intense stage and studio work.
‘TASS / Reuters’
And all this is based on a completely fresh, but not yet the most popular myth about the Great Unknown Blues Guitarist in that era.Probably, the myth would have remained a myth and a cult, but Jimi was lucky to live in an extraordinary era and communicate with extraordinary, like himself, musicians and show business figures.
And yet, despite the right mix of time and place, Jimi was best and succinctly described by renowned jazz trumpeter Miles Davis: “He was a great blues guitarist. ” It is very important to separate Hendrix from the Hendrix myth. After all, the meaning of his personality turned out to be blurred by her bizarre comprehension, so characteristic of the 60s and the first third of the 70s.
It’s strange that Jimi was never called the “atomic bluesman”, although such a title would suit him very much. Well, the musical symbol of that era was rock, and only rock. Almost the main component of the myth about Jimi – “he was an unknown star who came out of nowhere.”
This is not true. It’s just that Jimi generally had a successful career as a sideman musician who accompanied American stars of rock and roll, soul and rhythm and blues, was remembered only when the musician left this world.
His innovations were truly revolutionary: the sound of an overloaded electric guitar that we know and love today is almost entirely the merit of Jimi, and the image of a heroic virtuoso was invented by him.
The Isley Brothers, Little Richard, Curtis Knight – these were big names overseas, but who at that time could be interested in even an excellent musician who modestly stood on the stage in the second line behind the backs of the stars? After all, interest in unknown guitarists just became a consequence of Jimi’s lightning-fast career!
Yes, our hero was not a pioneer – the first title of “hero-guitarist” and simply “god” was earned by Briton Eric Clapton. But Eric in that fantastic era was in no way a solo artist – fame came to him in the Bluesbreakers and Cream groups. Plus, they were serious, “musician”, as they would say now, line-ups.
Jimi didn’t take music and its performance lightly (it is enough to appreciate his technical innovations in guitar sound processing), but he lived with it easily. Moreover, on stage he was a first-class showman who understood the importance of the stage image. But for a star to be born, the attention of interested people is always necessary.
Chas Chandler, former bass player of the British band The Animals, became a real discoverer of Jimi. Omitting the history of the musician’s previous contacts with big people in show business, it can be noted that the guitarist was very lucky. After all, Chas became not only Jimi’s mentor in the world of professionals and his first manager, but also just his good friend and advisor.
He helped him in developing musical ideas and writing material, and soon introduced the musician to sound engineer Eddie Kramer, a great emotional contact with whom Jimi achieved such impressive innovations in studio guitar sound.
At the same time, Jimi would hardly have become a world-class rock star at such a speed in his homeland. In the United States that year, just like we did during perestroika, local stars were in vogue with supposedly apt and sharp lyrics, but not a decent level of music-making.
On this topic
And Great Britain-1967 is, of course, the trendsetter of global rock fashion: The Beatles and The Rolling Stones came from this country to the world, this alone is enough. It was this arrival in the United States from Britain that allowed Jimi to become from a completely unknown sideman in less than three years not only the highest paid rocker in the world, but also a real symbol and god of rock music.
But his innovations were truly revolutionary: the sound of an overloaded electric guitar that we know and love today is almost entirely the merit of Jimi, and the image of a heroic virtuoso was invented by him. No wonder his performance of the US anthem The Star-Spangled Banner was once called “the greatest moment of all the 60s of America. ”
He definitely did not want and did not intend to die. But Jimi’s recklessness, craving for alcohol and known chemical substances, and generally an easy attitude to life did their dirty deed.As always, chance played a role in Jimi’s life – if the musician’s girlfriend had woken up a little earlier, and the innovator would have been alive.
Jimi lived easily, and left us easily – but his legacy turned out to be truly overwhelming. First of all, because, as already mentioned, the myth outweighed the real person, who is all the more dead.
Jimi went down in history as that rare musician, almost every step of which, 47 years after his death, they strive to record as accurately as possible, not to mention writing detailed “biographies” of every guitar that ever fell into his hands.
And yet, when you once again see a picture of a guitar and amplifiers, remember that without Jimi the microphone could have been a symbol of rock and roll. Well, once you see, you seem to remember and pay tribute: after all, the musician is alive as long as his music, his recordings and the associated figurative series are alive. Jimi looks at us from heaven and realizes that with this he is all right.
90,000 Life in Soviet Captivity: Memoirs of a Former Wehrmacht Soldier | Culture and Lifestyle in Germany and Europe | DW
Josef Hendricks, 94, and his 86-year-old wife today live in the quiet town of Arnsberg in North Rhine-Westphalia.The mountains and the forest are visible from the windows of their house. “I have always dreamed of such a calm old age,” smiles Joseph. “We have a large family, four children and six grandchildren. I am very glad that they were lucky to live in peacetime and did not have to go through the horrors of war like their father and grandfather captivity “.
Wounded, shell-shocked, captured
Josef Hendricks in Soviet captivity
In January 1940, 19-year-old Joseph Hendricks was drafted into the army and sent to fight in France as part of the 211st Infantry Division. In 1942, his division was transferred to the East. On February 21, 1942, during one of the battles near Bryansk, Joseph was seriously wounded in the lung and spent nine months in hospitals in Warsaw and Germany. Returning to his native division, which was still near Bryansk, he was wounded during one of the battles and was taken prisoner by the Soviets.
“I will never forget the face of a Soviet soldier whom I saw when I regained consciousness:” So you are alive, Fritz !? “At first I thought that the end had come for me, and he would finish me off,” recalls Josef. However, the soldier bandaged the wound on the enemy’s head and said: “The war is over for you, you were taken prisoner, and I will have to fight.” Josef partially understood the Soviet soldier, because by this time he had already learned a few Russian words from an army study book.
Short letters to relatives from Soviet captivity
22-year-old Joseph was sent to camp number 27 in Krasnogorsk near Moscow. He remained there until the fall of 1943. From there he, along with other prisoners of war, was transferred to a camp near Ryazan – to felling.”In the camps, despite the difficult conditions and malnutrition, we prisoners of war were treated friendly, because we worked to the point of exhaustion. Sometimes the locals, seeing hunger in our eyes, gave us a handful of seeds or a cucumber, and this gave us strength to survive.” , – recalls Joseph Hendrix.
Watches and skillful hands saved
Josef Hendricks managed to keep his watch. Usually they were taken from prisoners. “When a Soviet lieutenant in Krasnogorsk noticed that I was hiding my watch in the bootleg, he asked in good German:“ Why are you hiding your watch from civilized people? ”I did not know how to answer that.Soon he gave me a certificate stating that the watch was my personal property. And after that I could wear them openly on my arm, “explains Josef Hendricks. It was thanks to this watch that the young prisoner easily came into contact with the locals and began to quickly learn Russian. Conversations always began with the question: what time is it?
One fine moment, Josef, together with his older friend Jochen, who was a professional watchmaker, managed to make a wall clock from wood. “For the clockwork itself, we secretly collected everything that we could find on the territory of the camp: nails, rivets, wire, bolts. In the furnace of the barrack, we melted, forged, gave the details the necessary shapes. The work acquired such a scale that it could not be hidden from the guards “, – recalls Joseph Hendricks. The guilty prisoners were brought in for interrogation. When the senior officer found out what they were doing in their free time in lumbering, he had mercy and ordered the guards to monitor their work. The first wall clock made by the prisoners was presented to the public at a general assembly of the camp.
Cover of the book “Taste of Wormwood”
Josef and Jochen made one watch after another. Her favorite pastime helped to forget about hunger and other trials. “It used to be that one of the guards” accidentally “put a crust of bread on our desk, and then, leaving, took it back. Now it is difficult to imagine the torment that we, exhausted from hunger, had to experience then,” recalls in his book “Taste of wormwood” by Joseph Hendrix. He wrote the book after the war, many years later. And in 2009 it was also published in Russian – translated by Natalia Mikhalkova.
For the restoration of mines and coal mining
In the fall of 1944, Joseph Hendrix was transferred to a camp near Donetsk. But in his accompanying papers it was written that he was a master of making wall clocks. He was assigned two assistants who were not suitable for work in the mine. A couple of times a week, Hendrix was sent to work in the mine, but the rest of the time he could do what he loved.
With this suitcase, made with his own hands, Joseph returned to his homeland.
“We prisoners were very happy about the end of the war and hoped that we would be sent home. However, we soon realized that now is the time for retribution, “recalls Josef. Josef Hendricks had to wait for freedom until December 1949:” These were years of agonizing fear, because most of the prisoners of war, instead of being released, were sent to Siberian camps, from where many never did not return home. ”According to Hendrix, special commissions began to come to the prisoner of war camps in 1949. They held field trials.
The long-awaited return home
On December 7, 1949, lists of four hundred people who were to be released were posted in the camp canteen. Hendrix was also in them. “The next day, 70 people were struck off this list. The shaved-naked prisoners were taken away in an unknown direction. When we left the camp, the political instructor shouted after us:“ Tell us the truth about the Soviet Union at home. ”
Three-volume textbook on geography. USSR, written by Josef Hendricks
“I have fulfilled the order of the political instructor,” Josef Hendrix smiles.Having learned after returning from captivity to a teacher of geography and theology, Hendrix participated in writing a three-volume school textbook on geography. The former prisoner of war wrote chapters on the USSR. In addition, the teacher considered it his duty to tell students about the war and life in Soviet captivity. “What our generation has gone through should never happen again,” says 94-year-old Joseph Hendrix.
As a student, Joseph met a woman with whom he has been happily married for 56 years.Together they raised four children who gave them six grandchildren. The Hendrix family has been to Russia eight times and made friends with many former front-line soldiers. “Grandfather Joseph” kept his diaries and letters from the war and post-war years for his grandchildren. “Our descendants should know that there is nothing more terrible than war and enmity between nations. People can be happy only in peace and harmony,” the former Wehrmacht soldier and Soviet prisoner of war Joseph Hendrix is sure.

Chapter 16
“Forgive me, please,” Margaret mumbled, unable to take her frightened eyes off the skinny balding man she had just spotted at the opposite end of the room.
– Not at all, my lady. There is always such a crowd at the balls that it is simply impossible to dance a waltz normally, ”objected Daniels.
Fortunately, the music finally stopped, and Margaret no longer needed to remember the dance steps, and she managed to do it with great difficulty. She desperately needed to be alone and think. Her gaze, as if fascinated, again with horror was directed at the man in the reddish black suit. Although what’s the use of thinking …
Daniels escorted her to where Drusilla was eagerly awaiting them.
Margaret mechanically performed the ceremony of introducing Daniels as a desirable partner to her half-sister, barely noticing them as they stepped back and headed towards the middle of the room. Her head was occupied with ever-increasing fears.
What should she do?
In order not to look at this man any more and not to draw his attention to herself, she stared at the intricate pattern of the parquet. No, the question is not what she will do. The question is what can she do.
Margaret sat down on the vacant chair and surreptitiously looked at the man at the far end of the room. His attention, apparently, was absorbed by a conversation with an elderly lady standing next to him. What is his name?
She tried to remember – and could not; she eventually abandoned these attempts as irrelevant. It doesn’t matter what he called himself when he portrayed a priest in Vienna, because now he probably has a different name.
Her anxious gaze swept the crowded room, looking for Hendrix and hoping not to find him at the same time. She always knew that sooner or later he would find out that she was not his daughter, but she did not want him to find out in front of the eagerly watching crowd. He doesn’t deserve it.
Unfortunately, Margaret found him nearby talking to Lady Jersey. She bit her lower lip nervously as Hendrix, noticing her, said goodbye to Lady Jersey and walked towards her.
Unless … She frowned, because another explanation suddenly occurred to her. Did he follow them to England on purpose to blackmail Philip?
“Doesn’t his appearance at the ball mean a latent threat? If so, then the threat worked, Margaret thought. She was frightened to the point of losing consciousness, and yet he had not even approached her yet. – There you are, dear! And Hendrix sat down next to her. Margaret studied him little by little, looking for some indication that the man was already approaching him. But the old face showed nothing but fatigue.
– Why aren’t you dancing, honey? Hendrix asked. Margaret squeezed out a smile, pretending nothing special was happening.
– Dancing is a rather tedious activity. Both mentally and physically.
Hendrix’s bushy white eyebrows rose inquiringly.
– In the mental? Margaret nodded.
– It is very tiring to think about what to say and at the same time try not to get out of rhythm.
“Practice and stop getting lost,” Hendrix reassured her.
Margaret’s eyes involuntarily turned to the false priest again. He was still talking with the old lady. I don’t think I will have the opportunity to practice further, Margaret thought. She had a few days left to play the role of Philip’s wife. And this is good. You can return to George and your usual life. She didn’t want to admit the uncertainty that gripped her.
Who are you looking at? Hendrix’s curious voice entered her confused thoughts. – Surely I won’t get bored with this old prosaic?
– What old prosaic will I get bored with? Hendrix nodded in the direction of what Margaret thought was the embodiment of the goddess of vengeance.
“I think I saw him somewhere,” Margaret said.
– I can’t imagine where it could be. Preston is not one of those who always appear on the guest list. He’s here only because, as Mrs. Carrington’s personal chaplain, it is his duty to make sure her guests don’t indulge in too much fun.
Chaplain! The word had an effect on Margaret like a blow. If he was a real chaplain … A mixture of mixed feelings seized her, the blood draining from her cheeks. It can’t be! Philip could not marry her for real.He is the Earl, and she is Mainwaring’s illegitimate daughter.
The earls marry for profit, but what was the benefit to Philip of marrying her? No. So why is he . ..
– Are you feeling bad, dear? You have turned so very pale. Margaret blinked, trying to collect her scattered thoughts.
– It’s okay. It’s just a little stuffy here.
– Yes, you are right. Fortunately, Hendrix did not question her explanation. “Shouldn’t I find Chadwick and ask him to take you home? Or I’ll take you myself.I have nothing against leaving, ”Hendrix reassured her. – The more I get older, the more tedious these techniques seem to me. And for some reason tonight was worse than usual. You know, four matrons just started talking to me, and each one was dragging her daughter in tow. And everyone is so young that they are suitable for me as granddaughters! I don’t understand anything.
Margaret bit her lip and looked at him, torn between the urge to laugh and upset at the unexpected consequences of the words escaped from her during her conversation with Mrs. Worcester.Hendrix noticed this and his pale blue eyes gleamed
– Tell me, dear, why do I have the impression that you are not so surprised by my message?
– I must confess to you. I never imagined that it would turn out like that. I just wanted to get rid of this woman.
– Which woman is it from?
– From Mrs Worcester. He nodded sympathetically.
– A perfectly understandable desire.
– Yes, well, and … She cornered me, and I was afraid that she would bore me in order to get the opportunity to talk to you.Wanting to get rid of her, I, without thinking, gave her the impression that you …
– What am I?
“You want to marry a young lady in order to have a son who will inherit your fortune,” Margaret blurted out.
Hendrix stared at her in shock for a while, and then grinned:
– That’s it!
Margaret smiled back slightly, wondering how stupid Hendrix’s wife was if she chose someone else. Not only is he a very nice person, he also has a sense of humor.
But could it be that his wife was seized by the same reckless desire that overtakes her, Margaret, every time Philip hugs her? This feeling has nothing to do with common sense, even with the concepts of good and evil. It seems that it exists on its own, separate from everything.
– Good evening, Hendrix. What do you find funny about this bunch?
Philip’s gloomy voice penetrated her, arousing her already tense nerves.
“Good evening, Chadwick,” Hendrix said. – My upcoming wedding with one of the young buds this season.
Margaret noticed that Philip’s eyebrows went up. “From surprise or disapproval?” She thought. Was it not because Philip married her that he intended to lay hands on the state of Hendrix through her? She studied the hard lines of Philip’s chin. It is quite possible. According to her own observations, representatives of the aristocracy value money most of all.And if Hendrix believes that she is his daughter, then, naturally, he will leave her most of his fortune, and since Philip is her husband, he will lay his paw on this state.
But for some reason she could not fully believe that such were his motives. As far as she could see, money was not so important to Philip. Otherwise, he would long ago have curbed Estella’s unbridled squandering.
“I can’t decide whether to extend my congratulations or condolences to you,” Philip said. Hendrix chuckled.
– Definitely condolences. Although for the time being it would be premature to announce the end of my bachelor existence.
“I was so unfortunate that Mrs. Worcester got the impression that dad wanted to have a son, the heir to his fortune,” Margaret explained in response to Philip’s bewildered look. – And from that moment hopeful mothers began to lie in wait for him.
– Being of sound mind, I intend to wait for my grandson. I’m talking about your second son, dear, because the first will inherit the county, ”Hendrix said.
Margaret glanced furtively at Philip, trying to understand his reaction to Hendrix’s words. But his face was impassive. If he was disappointed that she would not be Hendrix’s heiress, he hid it well.
– Ah, Lord Chadwick, I thought I saw you. Preston’s oily voice penetrated into Margaret’s thoughts. – Lord Hendrix. Preston nodded respectfully to him. – I heard that you intend to plunge into the waves of marriage again.
Margaret choked. How could her rash words spread so quickly? Of course, do not feed the high society with bread, but let them gossip, but this is just ridiculous!
“You heard some silly gossip, Preston,” Hendrix said.- I have no intention of remarrying.
Preston made a snorting sound that reminded Margaret of a cluck.
– It’s just outrageous how rumors spread! Philip’s lips curved slightly, and he glanced at Margaret. She looked at him, spellbound by the sparkles dancing in his dark eyes. If only he had been like this more often! If … If what? The thought amused her. Philip, when something makes him laugh, seems different, but this does not mean that he is actually different. He remains the same adamant person who instantly decided that she was George’s mistress.
“What’s even uglier is how people readily listen to these gossips and repeat them,” said Philip.
Preston nodded in agreement, completely oblivious to the attack in his direction.
– Indeed, my lord, women should be constantly reminded not to gossip.
– Women! Said Margaret.
– Well, yes.Preston smiled indulgently at her. – That’s what the Bible says. Women are weak creatures and need constant guidance or they will fall into sin.
“Meanwhile, Judas Iscariot betrayed the Lord,” Margaret retorted. – And the Sanhedrin condemned him, and Pontius Pilate condemned him, and the soldiers crucified. All of them are men. It seems to me that it is men who should lower their heads in shame.
Preston opened his mouth, his Adam’s apple twitching at this unexpected attack.
Margaret noticed that he finally recognized her and opened his eyes wide, not believing himself.
“Miss … uh-uh … my lady,” he said in amazement. “I don’t understand that… I mean…” He looked around for support.
– It seems Mrs. Carrington is looking for you. – Against expectations, support came from Philip.
– Ax, I have to go. And Preston hurried away.
– What … – Margaret choked with indignation. – What a fool! To stand here and repeat the gossip he just heard, and also have the audacity to try to shift the blame for it onto women!
“But you can’t help but admit that women usually gossip,” Philip said.
Margaret narrowed her eyes and spoke something in Greek.
Philip blinked at the quote. She really speaks Greek. She didn’t pretend to be interested in the same things that Hendrix had always been.
-… night. Philip heard the very end of Hendrix’s phrase.
– Yes, it’s too late, – agreed Margaret, giving Philip thus to understand what it was about.
– And I have already spoken to all the peers who have come here. We may well go home, – said Philip and took Margaret by the hand.
She suppressed a smile at these words. He obviously doesn’t see the ball as a place to have fun. And she agreed with him. Every evening, dancing with the same people, listening to the same annoying gossip, fighting off the same flirting men – all this did not correspond to her ideas about entertainment.
As she left with Philip, Margaret surreptitiously scanned the crowded ballroom, trying to find either Drusilla or Daniels. She did not see Daniels, but Drusilla stood with her father at the door. Nearby stood an obese young man, gazing adoringly at the girl.
It was clear from Drusilla’s expressionless face that she was not impressed by the young man’s words. Could it be that Mainwaring had chosen him as his son-in-law? If so, then he clearly could not compete with Mr. Daniels.
Margaret left the mansion with Philip and went to the waiting carriage. Placing his wife in the carriage, he squeezed her wrist so that all thoughts of Drusilla and her unknown admirer flew out of her head.
Seated across from Margaret, Philip stared at her through the darkness. Some unearthly glow seemed to emanate from her pale skin. As if this woman does not exist at all. It’s like this woman is a ghost sent to haunt him.
“And she does it pretty well, damn it!” He thought. Her appearance in his life turned everything upside down.
Oddly enough, the situation was very similar to the one when he made the disgusting discovery about Roxanne’s infidelity.Suddenly everything he knew, he believed, about women, seemed to him then wrong. These are by no means weak creatures in need of male care and guidance. These are shameless schemers who do not even care about honor and oaths, which they themselves gave.
And now Margaret has once again upset his notions. All the lessons he learned from Roxanne do not seem to apply to Margaret.
She stirred slightly, her rotunda opened, and he saw the mounds of her breasts. He stared at the delicious crack between them, and passion flared in him.
Philip clenched his fists to suppress an irresistible urge to caress this delicate skin.
“But why should I resist my desires?” He thought. Margaret is his wife. He has every right to touch her. And in the darkness of the carriage, no one will see it. Their solitude here is as inviolable as if they were in her bedroom. Moreover, since she did not know that he had decided to normalize his sexual contacts with her, she would not know that he had failed.Failed again.
Without giving himself time to consider whether he was acting smart, he sat down next to her.
Margaret perked up, surprised by his unexpected movement.
– What happened? She asked.
“Nothing,” he muttered, finding that he couldn’t plausibly explain what he was doing. His head was occupied with something completely different. For example, her painfully feminine scent, which he sucked in deeper and deeper, making his lust grow stronger.
Yielding to an irresistible desire, Philip put his hand behind her bodice. Her hot flesh seemed to burn his fingers, and he closed his eyes to savor the sensations that gripped him even more fully. His fingers penetrated lower, curling around the soft nipple, and when he felt the nipple harden under his hand, it took away the rest of his self-control.
He pulled off her bodice and bared her breasts, but because of the darkness he could see them dimly. It doesn’t matter, Philip decided. “Still, a touch is much more satisfying than a glance.”
He felt her heart beating desperately under his hand, and a vague thought flashed through his head: what is she experiencing? Does she enjoy it? Wives are not supposed to do this, but after all, Margaret cannot be considered an ordinary wife in anything. She is too different from any woman he has ever seen. Her learning ability and ruthless logic make her more masculine than feminine.
But her body … The thought of her body shook him. He had never seen anything more feminine. It is downright treasure trove for a wide variety of sensual delights. It seemed that he could live his whole life, plunging into the secrets of this body, and never know everything.
Margaret bit her lip to keep from moaning from his caresses. To her hypersensitive skin, the touch seemed too exciting.
She tensed as he leaned towards her and she felt his hot breath on her cheek. Her heart was beating echoingly, it seemed that she was about to suffocate. Her eyelids were heavy, and it cost her more and more efforts not to lower them, but she could not waste energy on this, because all her attention was focused on trying to hide from him what passion his touch evokes in her.
It got harder and harder. She could hardly restrain herself so as not to wrap her hands around his head and draw his lips to her. “Why not?” She asked herself. As incomprehensible as it may seem, she is married to him. And married women, of course, have the right to enjoy the act of marriage.
Lust grew in her, but doubt flashed through it: she remembered the endless complaints of her mother and her friends about the marriage bed. However, she drove this doubt away. There is nothing wrong with fondling a husband. The wife’s duty is to submit to his onslaught, and if the duty coincides, like hers, with her inclination, so much the better.
Margaret felt the rough skin of his cheek against her chest, and her thoughts disintegrated into many small fragments. She shivered in confusion at the rush of sensation that overwhelmed her as his lips closed tightly around her nipple.
Involuntarily she ran her fingers through his hair to draw him even closer to her. His hair was soft and cool and contrasted with the fiery fervor of his greedy lips.
An agonizing groan was heard in the dark Carriage.
Margaret was overwhelmed with a sense of great loss when Philip moved back a little. But instead of returning to his seat, as she expected, he found her lips in the darkness with his lips,
Her lips parted, responding to the sensual sensation of his tongue touching her tongue. She hugged him tightly. It no longer mattered to her that they were in a cramped carriage moving through London. The only thing that mattered was that he did not stop.
Margaret grabbed his coat when he pulled back a little, but instead of leaving her, which she feared, he grabbed the hem of her dress and pulled it up over her slender hips.
For a moment, her growing passion was interrupted by a feeling of cool night air on hot skin, and she shook her head, trying to focus on something other than her burning passion.
He answered her not with words, but with action. Putting his arms around her waist, he sat her on his lap.
She swallowed as his flesh pressed against hers. Natural restraint finally refused to obey her, and now she was seized by an all-consuming thirst that demanded satisfaction.
She felt his fingers tremble as he roughly moved her; realizing that he was as excited as she was, Margaret felt wild delight.
And then she didn’t think about anything at all, because he got down to business.
