Hall of Fame Ready to Welcome New Members
Lanny McDonald is proud of how the Hockey Hall of Fame survived the world-changing pandemic.
On Monday in Toronto, nearly 17 months after being elected, five players and one individual in the Builders category will be inducted into the Hall of Fame as the Class of 2020. McDonald, who became chairman of the Hall of Fame at 19’92, will host a ceremony that will culminate in four days of memorable events for Marian Hossa, Jerome Iginla, Kevin Lowe, Kim San-Pierre, Doug Wilson (Players) and Ken Holland (Builders).
And yet the Hall of Fame is not yet functioning normally. But for him, also affected by the pandemic, this is an important step in the right direction.
The Hall of Fame has experienced two lockdowns: from March to July 2020 and from the end of 2020 to July 2021. In addition, the decision was made not to announce the class of 2021, but instead to hold a ceremony for those who were elected legends in June 2020.
From Friday to Monday, McDonald will have to organize several events for the “new kids on the block,” as he calls them: he should give them Hall of Famer rings, introduce them to fans at the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Calgary Flames ( on Friday), hold a Legends Match on Sunday, and give a speech on Monday at the main ceremony.

McDonald hopes Hall of Fame attendance will pick up over the coming weekend. In any case, he will be very happy about it.
“The last 18 months have been tough, but our people have shown amazing resilience,” McDonald says of the Hall’s staff. back to normal. I believe that one day it will happen, but it will take time. Our staff did everything possible to ensure that the Hall could make ends meet, performed various duties, sold tickets, worked on the premises. Everyone rolled up their sleeves.”
A year ago, on the dates of the 2020 class Hall of Fame induction ceremony, only a few people came to see the exhibits at the Hockey Museum. And McDonald at that time was at his home in Calgary and watched a golf tournament on television, which was postponed for seven months due to the pandemic.
“I love this tournament, the most important competition,” he says. “But I didn’t think I’d be at home watching TV these days. ”
Last November, plaques of new members were presented in the Hall of Fame, although the heroes of the occasion were not there. The plaques were featured on a TSN television program called “The Hall: Hockey Treasures”.
Attendance in the summer of 2020 dropped sharply. Usually 1500-2000 people visit the Hall of Fame per day, and last year this figure stopped at around 150 visitors. The anti-record was set when only 11 people bought tickets. But McDonald is encouraged by the statistics after July 2021 – 500 visits per day on average. In autumn there was a certain and expected decline due to the holidays and the beginning of the school year.

The induction ceremony for new members will take place on Monday evening at the Meridian Hall Theatre, which is located across the street from the Hall of Fame. This will be the first time that since 1993, when the museum moved to its current building, such events have been held at the Allen Lambert Gallery.
The change of location is due to the fact that the Meridian Hall theater is safer, it is easier to maintain social distance there. But in any case, all guests must be vaccinated and wear masks.
“We were afraid we wouldn’t be allowed to gather enough guests to congratulate the new Hall of Famers,” McDonald said, explaining the reason for moving the ceremony to a new location. we are completely satisfied. I am very interested in what not only the guests, but also the members of the Hall of Fame will say after the ceremony. In the current conditions, our previous place would be an unfortunate choice. After that, we will analyze everything and decide whether we should continue to hold such events there or go back.”
Guests of the ceremony, as well as TV viewers who can watch it on TV, hope to catch a glimpse of MacDonald’s legendary mustache now hidden behind a mask.
“That’s terrible,” the owner laughs. “One side sticks up, the other down. Total mess. Laugh.
