Gymnastic summer camps offer exciting opportunities for children to stay active, learn new skills, and have fun during school breaks. These camps combine gymnastics training with other engaging activities to create memorable experiences. Let’s explore some popular gymnastic summer camp options and what they typically offer.

These camps provide a well-rounded experience that goes beyond just gymnastics training, contributing to a child’s overall development and well-being.
What to Expect at a Gymnastic Summer Camp
When enrolling your child in a gymnastic summer camp, it’s helpful to know what a typical day might entail. While activities may vary between different camps, here’s a general overview of what you can expect:
Daily Schedule and Activities
Most gymnastic summer camps follow a structured daily schedule that includes:
- Warm-up exercises and stretching
- Rotations through various gymnastics apparatus (e.g., balance beam, uneven bars, vault)
- Floor exercise practice
- Trampoline time
- Group games and team-building activities
- Arts and crafts sessions
- Snack and lunch breaks
- Cool-down and flexibility exercises
Some camps, like Elite Gymnastics in Hawthorne, NJ, may also incorporate additional activities such as swimming. In these cases, parents should send children with appropriate swim gear and a change of clothes.
Skill Development Focus
While gymnastic summer camps are designed to be fun and engaging, they also emphasize skill development. Campers can expect to work on:
- Basic gymnastics techniques
- Strength and conditioning exercises
- Balance and coordination drills
- Flexibility and stretching routines
- Body awareness and spatial orientation
These camps often cater to various skill levels, ensuring that both beginners and more advanced gymnasts can benefit from the program.
Choosing the Right Gymnastic Summer Camp
Selecting the ideal gymnastic summer camp for your child involves considering several factors. Here are some key points to keep in mind when making your decision:
Location and Accessibility
Choose a camp that is conveniently located and easily accessible. Consider factors such as:
- Distance from your home or workplace
- Available transportation options
- Parking facilities for drop-off and pick-up
Camp Duration and Schedule
Evaluate the camp’s duration and schedule to ensure it aligns with your needs:
- Full-day vs. half-day options
- Weekly or daily enrollment possibilities
- Extended care options for early drop-off or late pick-up
Staff Qualifications and Ratios
Inquire about the qualifications of the camp staff and the camper-to-instructor ratio:
- Certification and experience of gymnastics instructors
- Background checks and safety training for all staff members
- Number of campers per instructor to ensure adequate supervision
Facility Safety and Equipment
Ensure the camp facilities meet high safety standards:
- Well-maintained gymnastics equipment
- Proper padding and safety mats
- Clean and organized spaces
- Adherence to local health and safety regulations
Cost and Value
Compare the costs of different camps and consider the value offered:
- Weekly or daily rates
- Sibling discounts or multi-week enrollment benefits
- Included amenities (e.g., snacks, t-shirts, special events)
- Additional fees for registration or equipment
Preparing Your Child for Gymnastic Summer Camp
Once you’ve chosen a gymnastic summer camp, it’s important to prepare your child for the experience. Here are some tips to ensure they have a great time:
What to Pack
Make sure your child has everything they need for a successful day at camp:
- Comfortable, fitted clothing suitable for gymnastics (e.g., leotards, shorts, t-shirts)
- Water bottle to stay hydrated throughout the day
- Nutritious snacks and lunch (if not provided by the camp)
- Sunscreen for outdoor activities
- Change of clothes
- Any necessary medications with clear instructions
If the camp includes swimming, like at Elite Gymnastics, don’t forget to pack a swimsuit, towel, and any required swim gear.
Discussing Expectations
Help your child feel prepared and excited about camp by discussing what to expect:
- Talk about the daily schedule and activities
- Emphasize the fun aspects of learning new skills
- Encourage them to make new friends and participate in group activities
- Address any concerns or anxieties they may have
Safety Reminders
Review important safety guidelines with your child:
- Listen to and follow instructions from camp staff
- Use equipment properly and only with supervision
- Inform an instructor if feeling unwell or injured
- Stay with the group and ask permission before leaving designated areas
Maximizing the Gymnastic Summer Camp Experience
To ensure your child gets the most out of their gymnastic summer camp experience, consider the following tips:
Encourage Positive Attitude
Help your child approach camp with enthusiasm and an open mind:
- Emphasize the fun and exciting aspects of trying new things
- Encourage them to set personal goals for skills they’d like to improve
- Remind them that everyone learns at their own pace
Maintain Open Communication
Stay informed about your child’s camp experience:
- Ask about their day and what activities they enjoyed most
- Discuss any challenges they faced and how they overcame them
- Address any concerns promptly with camp staff
Reinforce Learning at Home
Support your child’s progress outside of camp:
- Practice simple stretches or exercises together
- Encourage them to demonstrate new skills they’ve learned
- Discuss the importance of proper nutrition and rest for athletic performance
Consider Follow-Up Activities
Explore ways to continue your child’s interest in gymnastics after camp ends:
- Look into regular gymnastics classes during the school year
- Attend local gymnastics events or competitions as spectators
- Set up a safe area at home for practicing basic skills (with proper supervision)
By following these guidelines, you can help ensure that your child’s gymnastic summer camp experience is not only enjoyable but also contributes to their physical and personal development. Remember that each child’s experience is unique, and the most important aspect is that they have fun while staying active and learning new skills.

Is SGA camp the same as a gymnastics class?
Camp is the not the same as a gymnastics class. Gymnastics classes have smaller student-teacher ratios, are a bit more structured,
and the entire class is focused on learning gymnastics. In camp, the children learn some gymnastics, but it is mostly for fun.
Gymnastics skills are incorporated into the games the children play and we do a few gymnastics focused 15 minute rotations in each session.
We do offer a free trial class if you would like to try a gymnastics class.
Who can come to SGA camps?
Any child over 3 (must be potty trained). You don’t have to be an SGA registered member to attend! Bring your friends and family to experience a day full of fun!
When does camp happen?
Camps run all summer long, over Thanksgiving and Christmas break, and on most other school holidays.
Each day is split into two sessions:
Morning: 8:30am – 12:30pm
Afternoon: 1:00pm – 5:00pm
You can come for one session or stay all day!
For campers staying all day they can either bring a sack lunch or order a catered “hot meal” from the Mama Bear Cafe in our building. These meals cost $5.00 each.
How much does it cost?
$30/Session – Early Registration ($5 more if you enroll on the day of the camp)
$60/Full Day – Early Registration ($5 more if you enroll on the day of the camp)
$5 sibling discount
Lunch Options
Your child may bring his/her own sack lunch or you can pre-pay for a lunch from the cafe in our building during enrollment. Lunches are $5 and include your choice of entree, side, and drink

The ability to swim is one of the attributes of a person’s usefulness. We realized this when we began to receive calls from people already in old age with a request to teach us how to swim. In their requests, as if between the lines, there was regret that they had lived most of their lives and did not receive what many in their environment gave true pleasure and joy. It is impossible to describe in words the feelings that you experience, watching how these people are simply stunned that on the very first day of training they swam 20-50 meters on their own. And, I think that from the outside, seeing this scene, it is difficult to understand who is happier: the one who learned, or the one who taught.
Aqua aerobics is a system of physical exercises in water performed with music. The exercises can be performed while standing in the water at the bottom and in an unsupported position in a deep place. Both children and adults, men and women, who know how to swim and those who do not know how to swim, can go in for water aerobics.
