College GPA Calculator – Instructions
With our College GPA Calculator you may access to one of the most important tools for students. As you probably know, GPA stands for Grade Point Average. That means it is the average result from all of your grades. As calculated by the Universities of the United States, it is certainly a quite complicated system. That is we came up with our College GPA Calculator, a tool that will make such task easy for you!
What is GPA and how can we help you calculate it?
Your GPA will determine your future options when it comes to studying in the US. How does it really work?
There are two basic grade systems in the country: based on numbers and letters. Both represent the grades you receive on daily assignments and tests. Knowing those represent the first steps in calculating your GPA.
The number system is different than in other countries because the scale goes from zero to one hundred. Each numerical note corresponds to a letter note. Any note less than a C (70) is considered as a failure.
We can help you calculate your GPA by providing you with a tool that automatically makes the numbers for you. Introduce the relevant data, hit calculate and you are good to go!
How does the formula of your college GPA calculator work?
If you’d like to know how our college GPA calculator works, here is a simple explanation.
Below we present the letters with their corresponding mark:
Letter | % number |
---|---|
A | 90 to 100 |
B | 80 to 89 |
C | 70 to 79 |
D | 60 to 69 |
F | 0 to 59 |
Letters are also identified as a positive note or a negative marks. This system exists because when calculating your average, the value of the letter is rounded to the closest decimal. It would look like this:
Letter | % number |
---|---|
A | 93 to 100 |
A- | 90 to 92 |
B+ | 87 to 89 |
B | 83 to 86 |
B- | 80 to 82 |
C+ | 77 to 79 |
C | 73 to 76 |
C- | 70 to 72 |
D+ | 67 to 69 |
D | 63 to 66 |
D- | 60 to 62 |
F | Less than 60 |
How Do teachers calculate grades for GPA?
Each teacher has his own method of calculating grades as he will indicate his rules in the syllabus that they distribute at the beginning of the course.
For example: perhaps all exams in the course are worth 40 % of the final mark, homework is worth 50 % and class participation is worth 10 %. In this case, he would then take the average of the completed tasks and consider the average as 50 % of the final grade for the course.
The Scale 4.0 and how it will affect your marks
This is where the subject of the college GPA calculation gets complicated.
Your GPA is calculated on a scale from one to four. What happens is that the numerical marks (from 1 to 100) convert them to letters, and from the letter note to the new scale.
We know it’s a bit confusing, but let us explain it to you. The following table shows you the conversion:
% number | Letter | 4.0 Scale |
---|---|---|
93 to 100 | A | 4.0 |
90 to 92 | A- | 3.7 |
87 to 89 | B+ | 3.3 |
83 to 86 | B | 3.0 |
80 to 82 | B- | 2.7 |
77 to 79 | C+ | 2.3 |
73 to 76 | C | 2.0 |
70 to 72 | C- | 1. 7 |
67 to 69 | D+ | 1.3 |
63 to 66 | D | 1.0 |
60 to 62 | D- | 0.7 |
Below 60 | F | 0.0 |
As an example, let’s pretend that you introduce the following data in our College GPA calculator:
Course Name | Grade | Credits |
---|---|---|
Mathematics | B+ | 3 credits |
English | A | 3 credits |
Economy | C | 2 credits |
History | A- | 3 credits |
Each of those marks has a certain equivalent. If you look at the table above, you can match the note with its corresponding number on the 4.0 scale.
After this, we multiply that number with the number of credits the class is worth (this is different for each class, but it is usually identified by the course number).
Sounds complicated? Because it is! That is why is always better to simply use a college GPA calculator as ours!

In this article we will figure out how to calculate the GPA and how to use the GPA not only for entering the university, but also when looking for a job.
What is GPA?
In the United States, you must provide GPA information when you go to college or get a job.
It is calculated as follows: grades A, B, C, D, F are equated to points 4.0, 3.0, 2.0, 1.0, 0.0, respectively. The points for all subjects are summed up and divided by the number of subjects.
For example:
- 22 points according to estimates
- 7 items
- We calculate: 22/7 = 3.14 GPA .
In addition to grades in the US, there are Credits in subjects. To calculate the GPA along with the credits, they multiply each grade in the subject by the score on that credit. Then everything is added together and divided by the total amount of credits.
Some universities take into account grades with plus points, like A + or B +, which give an additional half point. In others, the GPA is rounded to the nearest whole number. In general, each university has its own rules.
How to calculate GPA?
Specially trained people from translation agencies or universities and schools themselves help Russian students to calculate the exact GPA.
The main thing is to find out the rules of admission to the university of your choice, at least in order to determine whether it is necessary to take into account the “pass / fail” when calculating the average score.
If “tests” are taken into account, then they are equated to the mark “excellent”, “failed” – to zero.
GPA from the grades is calculated as follows:
- All grades from the diploma or certificate are added;
- The amount is divided by the number of items.
It is necessary to register in the documents that the score is 4.3 out of 5 possible, according to our five-point system.
To convert the grades into a 4-point system, as in the United States, we focus on the following data:
- Grade 5 = 4.0,
- Score 4 = 3.0,
- Score 3 = 2.0,
- Score 2 = 1.0.
The rest of the steps are the same – add up the points and divide them by the total number of items.
Each institution has its own minimum GPA for admission. For example, to enter the University of California, Berkeley, the GPA must be at least 3.87, and for Hult Business School – 2.5.

Online calculators for calculating GPA
Special online calculators will help you calculate GPA yourself, but you should not rely on them entirely. Calculators take into account your grades and the number of academic hours in a given subject.
- We look at our diploma, where the total number of hours in the subject is put down next to the grades.
- Enter the data into the calculator lines and get the result.
To continue your studies in the United States, you must have a high GPA or at least meet the minimum university requirements. Without this point, applicants are screened out at the first stage.
Why Use GPA in Resume?
If you are planning to look for a job in the United States, then the employer will be interested in your GPA.Many large companies such as Bank of America, Procter & Gamble, Ernst & Young confirm that they want to see GPA in their resume at least 3.0, and some even 3.5.
Typically a high score is required in banking, accounting, and medicine.
GPA can be calculated at any time, at any stage of training. And in order for it to always be high, it is worth visiting all subjects, since the total amount of GPA depends on each of them, be it choral singing or quantum physics.
With GPA sorted out, now there is a question of admission. Before choosing a university, we advise you to read about how not to get confused in international university rankings and what are the main differences between the US and UK education systems.
How to calculate GPA and enter an American university
How to calculate your GPA? Admission to an American university is not an easy task. In order for a student to be accepted for a bachelor’s or master’s program, he must meet the admission requirements of US universities. The most famous universities in the United States, and the top rated ones, will require students to have a high grade point or a Grade Point Average of .
Grade Point Average (GPA) must be considered when choosing a US university and training program. The higher the university ranking, the higher the GPA entrance score
In this article, we will show you several ways to calculate your GPA for admission to an American university. Immediately we want to draw your attention to the fact that most US universities will require you to enter a self-calculated score. There are universities that will not require you to count the GPA on their own, so they have a department that deals with such issues. It will be enough just to send your current grades, certificate or bachelor’s degree to these educational institutions.

How to calculate your GPA yourself?
GPA (Grade Point Average) is the average score of all grades in your diploma / certificate during training. A certain threshold of the average mark is a prerequisite for admission to most foreign universities. Calculating GPA using a simple formula will be useful when choosing an educational institution. It primarily reflects your average performance in all subjects, rather than specific hobbies and interests. Most likely, the admissions committee will pay attention to academic performance in specialized subjects and possibly recalculate the GPA for verification. But you need to understand that if your GPA is significantly less than the passing grade for a given university, the chances that you will be able to enroll are not so great.
The method for calculating GPA at a particular university is different and may vary. A number of universities request a GPA for the last 3 years of study, and some request a GPA for certain subjects. Therefore, the following formula may not apply in all cases. But if you want to assess your chances of admission and determine the list of universities, then this method will suit you.
GPA Calculation Example
Suppose you want to calculate the GPA for 4 subjects. In the certificate or diploma, next to the grade, you can find the number of hours devoted to each of the subjects. Here is an example of what 4 subjects look like in a diploma or certificate:
Physics (72) good
Chemistry (110) excellent
Mathematics (150) excellent
Geometry (120) satisfactory
the subject is multiplied by its assessment. Generally, the GPA is calculated on the basis of the 4-point grading system that is used in the United States and other countries. Accordingly, the Russian grade “excellent” corresponds to 4 points, “good” to 3 points, “satisfactory” to 2 points, and so on.Therefore, in this case, the average score is calculated as follows:
1. Multiply the score by the number of hours for each subject
72×3 + 110×4 + 150×4 + 120×2 = 1496
2. Find the sum of hours spent on all subjects
72 + 110 + 150 + 120 = 452
3. Divide the result of calculations of 1 step by the result of calculations of 2 steps
1496/452 = 3.31.
In this case, the GPA is 3.31.
Consideration of “credits” when calculating GPA
As for admission after university, then for sure there are subjects in your diploma for which instead of an assessment there is a credit. How it affects the GPA depends, again, on the specific university. In most cases, items without a rating are not taken into account at all in the calculation, but it is better to clarify, since the GPA indicator can vary significantly depending on the calculation.
For example, in addition to the above subjects, you have 2 subjects in your diploma, which are simply “credit”:
Defectology (100) credit
Psychology (200) credit
Usually credit is taken for an excellent mark. Thus, the GPA calculation will be as follows:
(72×3 + 110×4 + 150×4 + 120×2 + 100×4 + 200×4) / (72 + 110 + 150 + 120+ 100 + 200) = 2696/752 = 3. 58.
Obviously, using this method, you will get a much higher GPA. But it is imperative to check with the contact person from the university, since in any case you send a copy of your diploma with grades, and if this calculation is not applicable at the university, an overestimated indicator may be considered hackwork, which can significantly reduce the chances of admission.
If the GPA is low
If you understand that the GPA is not the strong point of your application, then it is better to focus on other documents that you submit upon admission, and not try to overestimate the average score by artificial methods – the admissions committee will see all your grades. There is no need to panic, as the GPA is only part of your application and it is reviewed against your other metrics besides your average performance.
It is better to pay more attention to the motivation letter, in which you can explain controversial points of the academic background and better reveal your strengths. Cover up the low GPA with your past achievements. For example, even an ordinary coursework can come off as a plus in a resume, since, for example, in the USA there are no such mandatory assignments for bachelor students at all, but there are similar student projects, successful participation in which gives an advantage to the future applicant.
If the GPA score is below 2.5, you can no longer count on admission to the top universities of the United States. .
But there are universities that will accept you, provided you complete an additional preparatory program. The duration of the preparation program is determined by the level of the English language and your GPA, it can be from 1 to 3 semesters.

There are many GPA calculators on the net that exist in paid and free versions and, in essence, are almost no different. Usually, a simple method is used for the calculation without taking offsets. You can also find the average score calculator on many official websites of universities or read the FAQ, in which you can clarify the calculation method.

90,000 How to calculate the average score of a certificate and diploma when entering a foreign university?
Calculate average score ONLINE >>
Very often, graduates of universities and schools need to calculate the average score of the obtained certificate. It may be required when entering a foreign university, when applying for a job. We will tell you what a GPA is, how to correctly calculate your GPA and whether you need to take credits into account.
What is GPA
GPA is the GPA of a diploma or certificate, an overall indicator of a schoolchild’s or student’s performance. This abbreviation stands for grade point average. When filling out an application for preparatory programs, first degree and admission to a master’s program abroad, many universities require you to inform them of the applicant’s GPA.So, most US universities will require applicants to specify the GPA. Read more about applying for a bachelor’s degree in the USA here, about how to enter a master’s program in the USA here.
How to calculate GPA
When calculating the GPA, all grades indicated in the certificate or diploma are taken into account. These can be final grades: in subjects, for term papers and theses, for state exams. If you already have a document on education in your hands, you do not need to take into account any intermediate grades that are put down in your school electronic journal or grade book.
The next point concerns only students: whether it is necessary to take credits into account and if so, how exactly to take them into account.
If your university uses a 5-point system of assessment of knowledge plus “pass / fail”, students applying to foreign universities can calculate the average grade of the diploma in one of two ways:
- “ Credits” are taken into account. “Pass” = 5 points, “fail” = 0 points. Diploma grade point average = arithmetic mean of points for all subjects in the insert, including “pass” and “fail”.
- “Credits” are not taken into account. Grade point average of the diploma = the arithmetic mean of all the points received.
The arithmetic mean of both school performance and diploma grades is calculated according to the formula:
GPA = “the sum of all grades received” divided by “number of items”.
Example of GPA calculation
In the above example, we show the calculation of the average score for students, but students do it according to the same scheme.Since most schools do not pass tests, this type of performance assessment is not included in the calculation either.
Undergraduate student of the program “Management of the organization” received the following marks:
REF | Item Name | Score |
---|---|---|
1 | Philosophy | 4 (Good) |
2 | Sociology | 4 (Good) |
3 | Domestic history | Acceptance |
4 | Jurisprudence | Acceptance |
5 | English | 5 (Excellent) |
6 | Mathematics | 5 (Excellent) |
7 | Probability theory | Acceptance |
8 | Mathematical statistics | 4 (Good) |
9 | Social Informatics | 5 (Excellent) |
10 | Fundamentals of Management | 5 (Excellent) |
11 | Management history | Acceptance |
12 | Economic theory | 5 (Excellent) |
13 | History of Sociology | 3 (Satisfied) |
14 | Organization theory | 4 (Excellent) |
Total | 14 pieces | 4 credits and 10 exams |
According to the formula above, the average score of the diploma will be equal to:
64/14 = 4. 64 including credits or
44/10 = 4.4 – if offsets are not taken into account.
If the student has no “failures”, the first calculation system raises the average score of the student’s diploma. Many universities do not determine the procedure for calculating the average score of the diploma, and the choice of the calculation method remains with the applicant.
How to find out the GPA if your studies have not been completed yet
As a rule, admission to a foreign university begins in a year or a year and a half. If at this time a schoolchild or student is still studying, he can independently calculate the average grade based on intermediate grades in order to assess his chances of admission. In this case, the GPA calculation can be based on grades for:
1. Only completed subjects for which final grades have already been set.
2. All completed and most recent grades for unfinished items.
When sending an official application to the university, if the certificate or diploma has not yet been received, the applicant must provide a transcript – a letter with grades, in which the university will indicate the average score. In addition, the applicant must inform the university about the deadlines for the provision of final grades.
How to specify the GPA in the application for admission
The rule of indicating the GPA in the application for admission is simple: indicate not only the average score, but also tell the admissions committee the maximum possible score on your program, since in different countries the maximum score can be 4, 5 or 10 points.
For example: if your university / school has a 5-point grading system and your GPA is, say, 4.1, then in your application for admission you need to say “GPA 4.1 out of 5”.
Indicate the maximum GPA score
When reporting the average grade of the diploma, do not forget to indicate the maximum possible grade. In the above example, this would be “4.64 out of 5” or “4.4 out of 5” . The diploma of the first higher education or the transcript of the applicant will be attached to the application for admission, so the university in any case will see all your grades.

GPA in educational systems of the world
In the world university practice, several methods of calculating the average mark are most common. So, in Britain, grades from the first courses are often not taken into account, and in the USA and Europe, the average score is calculated taking into account the credit hours that the student has gained (and the weight of credits in America and Europe is different).
In order to assess their chances of admission to a particular university, American and European students must find out their GPA and, possibly, transfer it to another educational system. To do this, they use special online calculators, but it is important to note that the result they get when they transfer to a foreign educational system is not official. The official translation of the GPA into other educational systems (for example, between Britain and the United States) is carried out by special organizations.

Average
A certificate / diploma (Grade Point Average) is an indicator that characterizes the overall performance of students. It will come in handy for admission to preparatory programs
and training in European universities and the USA. Mean values
the points of the certificate are directly proportional to the scale of calculation – from 0 to 4 according to
the American system, from 0 to 5 for the Russian and European ones.
How to calculate the average
diploma score?
To calculate the arithmetic mean, it is necessary to divide the sum of the received estimates by
number of items.
When calculating the GPA, the student takes into account all
grades indicated in the educational document. If the student has already received a diploma,
intermediate marks are not taken into account.
Before calculating the average score, the applicant takes into account the requirements of the educational institution. For example, some universities require grades for a certain university course to be taken into account, others ask to calculate all the grades indicated in the diploma insert, and still others – to indicate the GPA for passing credits, coursework, state exams, etc. d.
How do I find out the GPA for the pass / fail knowledge assessment system?
For a five-point knowledge system according to the pass / fail assessment system, two methods of calculating the GPA are used.
- Accounting for “credits” (scheme: “pass” = 5 points, “failed” = 0 points). The average score of the diploma is calculated on the basis of the arithmetic mean of the marks for all items in the insert, including “pass”, “fail”.
- Not accounting for “offsets”. In this case, the GPA-indicator is the arithmetic average of only all received marks without “pass”, “no pass”.
Calculation of the average score before graduation
To calculate the average score and assess their own chances of admission to a foreign university while studying at the university, the student is recommended to use their intermediate marks for the selected period of time.
What is the basis for the calculation?
- Final marks for completed disciplines.
- The last marks for disciplines with an incomplete course of study.
In the process of submitting an official application to the university without a certificate / diploma in hand, the applicant must provide a letter with grades (transcript), where the GPA will indicate the university itself. The applicant for admission must also provide the educational institution with a clear deadline for receiving final grades.
What if the GPA level is low for admission to a foreign university?
- If
the average mark on the certificate is low – this is not a problem,
the management of many universities draws attention to the marks received by profile
disciplines. - Reception
the commission makes the final decision on admission
an applicant to a university only after studying a motivation letter, an essay,
the results of entrance exams and interviews. - V
in some cases, the academic performance is compensated
extracurricular achievements, work experience in the specialty and a good portfolio.
This rule is not quoted for a number of prestigious universities in Europe and America.
In order to get into the desired university, having an insufficient performance indicator, you can try another trick – go to a university with low requirements for applicants, and then apply for translation.
