Goalie Alyssa Naeher makes huge saves as U.S. soccer team advances to Olympic semifinals
Megan Rapinoe converted the deciding penalty in a shootout and the United States advanced to the semifinals of the women’s Olympic soccer tournament 4-2 following a 2-2 draw with the Netherlands on Friday.
United States goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher stopped Vivianne Meidema’s opening attempt in the shootout. She then saved a shot from Aniek Nouwen before Rapinoe put her penalty away.

After Rapinoe scored, she turned to her teammates, folded her arms and grinned in triumph.
Afterward, she joked about the pressure.
“I just try to stay calm. I always say to myself, `The worst that’s going to happen is you’re going to lose the whole thing,'” she smiled.
Meidema scored a pair of goals in regulation time for the Netherlands, giving her 10 goals for the tournament – an Olympic record.
Miedema put the Netherlands ahead in the 18th minute but the Americans equalized when Sam Mewis headed in a goal off a feed from Lynn Williams in the 28th. Williams then gave the Americans the lead in the 31st.
Meidema, who was playing in her 100th game for the Netherlands, made it 2-2 in the 54th.
Naeher saved a late penalty kick by Lieke Martens that could have ended the Americans’ quest for gold.

Naeher downplayed her own performance while lauding her teammates.
“This team just kept pushing for 90 minutes, 120 minutes, and we just kept believing that we were going to find a way to get it done,” Naeher said. “Very proud of the four players to step up and score their four penalties to go 4-fot-4. That is huge.”
The United States will next face Canada, which advanced to the semifinals 4-3 on penalties after a scoreless draw with Brazil in Rifu.

Save Percentage (SV%) Calculator (Hockey) – Captain Calculator
What is Save Percentage?
Save percentage is the percentage of saves a goalie makes to the number of shots made on the goal.
A higher save percentage is a sign of a goalie that allows few shots into the net. A lower save percentage is a sign of a goalie that allows a lot of shots into the net.
It is a common goalie statistic and also used in soccer, lacrosse, field hockey, water polo, and other sports with a goalie.
Formula – How to calculate save percentage
Save Percentage = Saves ÷ Shots on Goal
- A “save” is a shot on the goal that the goaltender stops.
- A “shot” is an action that directs the puck towards the net and is either stopped by the goaltender or goes in the net. Do not include shots from a shootout, shots that are blocked by a non-goalie player (blocked shots), or shots that miss the net or hit the goalpost (missed shots). Do not include empty net shots (the goalie is not on the ice) unless you are calculating the save percentage of a team.
A goalie faces 219 shots and makes 192 saves.
192 saves ÷ 219 shots = 0. 877.
This goalie’s save percentage is 0.877, or 87.7%.

Saving Soccer Goalkeepers from Injuries
There is little doubt that soccer goalkeepers are just a bit different than field players.
From legally using hands to their array of jumping and diving abilities, goalkeepers develop unique skill sets.
Thus, it shouldn’t be surprising that soccer goalkeeper have different types and causes of injuries
The good news is that soccer goalkeepers statistically don’t get hurt as often as field players.
However, when soccer goalkeepers do get hurt, those injuries can significantly influence individual and team play.
Here is a concise review of common soccer goalkeeper injuries and tips for reducing risks:
Shoulder/forearm/wrist injuries in soccer goalkeepers
Fairly intuitive that diving or stopping balls with hands puts soccer goalkeepers at higher chances of shoulder or arm injuries.
- Fractures to the radius bone: Commonly seen in children or adolescents who have hands driven backwards towards the wrist when trying to make a save on a direct shot.
- Balls shot by adults or use of adult size balls (size 5 versus child-based size 3 or 4 balls) may contribute to increased risk.
§ Risk Reduction Tips: Playing with age-appropriate balls and having adult/older players exercise caution when shooting on younger goalkeepers. There is no solid evidence that use of goalkeeper braces or gloves provide adequate injury reduction.
- Repeated diving and landing on the shoulders can be painful
- Acromioclavicular (AC) joint injury (where collarbone attaches to shoulder girdle) can come from one hard impact
- Glenohumeral joint injury (shoulder “ball and socket joint”) and looseness (aka instability) come from poor technique
- Repetitive throwing of balls can also lead to shoulder pain
*Risk Reduction Tips: Padded shirts may help reduce the impact to the shoulder region. Learn how to dive with a roll that lessens stress to shoulder. Strengthening exercises that focus on muscles around the shoulder girdle (scapula) can help reduce abnormal shoulder motion. Keeping elbows closer to body with diving can also reduce force on the shoulder joint.
Hip/groin injuries in soccer goalkeepers
Unfortunately, soccer players of all positions commonly suffer the perils of hip and groin pain. Soccer goalkeepers are not immune from this malady. However, mechanisms and types of injury do differ somewhat from field players.
- Side-diving can lead to abrasions (cuts) and bruises on the outside of the thigh region. Most of these are a nuisance, though open skin wounds can become infected. Carefully clean any wound and watch closely for redness, warmth or other signs of infection.
- Older, more professional level players may develop bursitis. This is swelling and pain in the bursa (normal fluid-filled cavities between muscles and bones).
§ Risk Reduction Tips: Many soccer goalkeepers used padded shorts for protection. There is little evidence that indicates that such padding reduces injury. No one particular material, size, or brand seems to be superior for reducing injury risk. Using a rolling motion with diving may reduce loading forces on the hip and thigh region.
- Injuries to adductor muscles on the inside of the thigh are more apt to occur in soccer goalkeepers than field players. These are seen especially on the kicking leg. This might be due to the frequent rotational and leaping movements required in goalkeeping. Adductor injuries also might be worsened by repetitive overuse due to multiple long goal kicks or punts..
§ Risk Reduction Tips: Highly recommend the FIFA 11 Soccer Injury Prevention Program. Developed for all players above age 14 to reduce hip/groin and other legs injuries.
Limit the number of longer goal kicks and punts, especially in early season practices with younger players. Allow players to gradually build strength and proper kicking technique. Have field players share in taking goal kicks
Concussion/Head Injuries in soccer goalkeepers
While soccer goalkeepers do not routinely head the ball, jumping or diving increases vulnerability for head injury. Many of these concussions are due to head impact with other players, the ground, or even the goalposts.
- Soccer goalkeepers also have additional risks:
- Close-distance shots directed at them with little time to react or protect the head
- Getting kicked in the head when diving head-first to gain possession of a loose ball.
§ Risk Reduction Tips:
- Using a fist to punch the ball rather than attempt to make a catch in traffic.
- May reduce direct contact with other players or limit chance of feet being taken out from below
- When going up in the air for a catch, raise elbows to protect the head
- Not extending the elbows to impact or injury an opponent
- Avoid going head-first into ball challenges, better to use feet first approach.
- Officials should enforce a reasonable protective halo around diving goalkeepers
- With potential close-range shots, teach goalkeepers to have hands up near face for more immediate protection
· Soft protective helmets might reduce the risk of bruises, cuts, and even skull fractures. They may not be able to limit rotational forces that are thought to contribute the most to concussions. There are also concerns that a player might play more aggressively when wearing a helmet. This might in theory actually increase rather than decrease the risk of head injury.
Knee Injuries in soccer goalkeepers
Rapid cutting/change of direction and off-balance landings on one leg put knees at high risk for Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) tears.
Goalkeeper Tips – Make the Save
A goalkeeper usually has to make at least one key save during a soccer match to help their team win. And the team often must get this save from their goalkeeper when they most need it – say when there’s a defensive mistake or a counter attack and it’s really all up to the goalkeeper to stop the shot. The goalkeeper is after all the last line of defensive and is called upon to make that big save when it’s desperately needed.
It’s just the way it is, for top teams in the world, their goalkeeper needs to bail the team out with a big save at least once if not twice. Sure, they have to make all the routine stops and grabs, but the team needs that one save to preserve the win. The keeper has to come up big for the team…A defender might miss hit a ball or lose an attacking player when they make a run, and the keeper has to read the play and make up for that mistake. Let’s take a look at some goalkeeper videos below.
The best goalkeeper tip is to always be ready, on your toes and see the ball. Usually keepers get beat because they’re not in position to make a save. So keepers can’t get caught sleeping on the job so to speak – every touch of the ball should be watched. And keepers should offer vocal support to their team since from the back they can see the whole field of play.
Update: What’s the best goalkeeping DVD around, it’s the Coerver Goalkeeping Essentials DVD, this is an excellent instructional DVD for beginner keepers or more experienced keepers – all levels of keepers will learn something from the DVD.
Edwin van der Sar of Manchester United
Take a look at this Edwin van der Sar highlight video. The Dutch and Manchester United keeper will go down as perhaps the one of the best goalkeepers in the English Premier League.
Learn more tips at: goalkeeper fundamentals.
Making the big save is what’s expected from the goalkeeper. It’s just the way things seem to go in soccer. No matter what, a team might be dominating a game but the opposing team will still get that one chance. That one chance on goal. And that’s why a goalie has to always be ready.
Now, even more than before, a goalkeeper has to be sharp with his or her feet, too. First touch is crucial, and the ball has to be controlled out in front of the keeper so they can quickly line up where they want to kick the ball as a forward chases them down.
Also, goalkeepers are the first line of the attack in soccer. From taking goal kicks to punting the ball to a forward or midfielder, the keeper starts the offensive attack.
How do you improve your accuracy on goal kicks and punts? Easy. By repeatedly practicing this on the soccer field. It’s that simple – get out on the field and strike the ball to a player lining up at the half line or making a run towards the one of the sidelines. Of course making sure you striking the ball correctly, keepers should drive the ball when they’re taking goal kicks.
Then, a keeper also has to be sharp with their throws. Often, goalies nowadays can throw the ball almost to half field. If your having trouble throwing the ball far enough see what you can do to strenthen your arm in the gym.
But what does a keeper really bring to the pitch. All these things are important but a keeper needs to bring an energy, a confidence, and leadership. Again, the goalie sees the whole field from the back. The keeper is the eyes and ears of the team. Lifting the team up when they are not playing up to their potential and directing players when they need to get in to position. Above all, a keeper has to instill a confidence in the team.
The best goalkeepers have an energy about them but are at the same time calm. Give the team the will to win. The spirit to keep going even when they’re behind or to maintain a lead if their winning.
Here are some goalkeeper tips to help keepers feel comfortable with the ball both in their hands and at their feet. In the modern game of soccer, where top teams keep possession of the ball, the keeper has to have good touch on the ball and be able to strike the ball with both feet.
- Ball familiarity – juggle the ball with your hands, forearms, writs, and then fists up in the air.
- Add goalkeeper to the possession game – work on your touch with both feet.
- Work on the Coerver daily footwork routine.
- Tap the ball between your feet – improve touch. Work on control and confidence with the ball.
- Join an indoor soccer team and play out in the field.
- Team up with a partner, perhaps a forward who needs to work on their shooting and crossing.

Matiss Kivlenieks praised at memorial service for saving ‘many lives’ from fireworks blast
Columbus Blue Jackets goalie Elvis Merzlikins says his teammate Matiss Kivlenieks “died a hero” after saving him and his pregnant wife from the errant fireworks blast that killed the 24-year-old.
“He saved not just many lives, but when it happened, I was standing 20, 30 feet back of him and I was hugging my wife,” Merzlikins said at Kivlenieks’ memorial service Thursday in Upper Arlington, Ohio. “He saved my son, he saved my wife, and he saved me. “
Merzlikins’ wife, Aleksandra, is in her third trimester, and Merzlikins said their son’s second name will be Matiss in honor of his teammate. Kivlenieks was living in Ohio with Merzlikins, who called his fellow Latvian player “my little brother.”
Kivlenieks died from chest trauma with major damage to his heart and lungs after being hit with an errant firework at a July 4 backyard party at the Michigan home of Blue Jackets goaltending coach Manny Legace. The party was also a wedding celebration for Legace’s daughter, Sabrina.
In saying Kivlenieks died a hero, Merzlikins noted, “That’s not just what I said. That’s what the doctor said. … And as Sabrina said, he saved his last puck.”
“Just to tell you about the last day,” Merzlikins said. “There were 60, 70, 80 people. I never looked for him. I was talking to so many people. Always, he came to me, he looked for me. We had our last beer, our last shot, last cigar. He was always smiling. I think he made me stronger as a man.”
While fighting back tears, Legace said Kivlenieks “got to become one of my family. He got to be a brother to my daughter and my son, a great friend to our nephew.”
“Michigan was his second home,” Legace said. “A lot of you guys don’t know, but ever since Kivi joined our organization, he would come up and live with my wife and I every summer. He became a son to us. He lived with us through the pandemic.”
Legace brought some humor to his eulogy, noting that former Blue Jackets coach John Tortorella was in attendance.
“Look how many lives you’ve touched, Matiss. Look how many lives you’ve touched,” Legace said. “Torts even flew in, and he hates goalies.”
“That’s the funniest thing you ever said,” Merzlikins quipped to laughs from the crowd.
Legace thanked everyone who came to the service and lauded Matiss’ mother and father “for raising a beautiful child.”
“You guys don’t know Kivi. He wouldn’t want this,” Legace said. “He’d want everyone to just have a beer and go on their way. But you guys in the Blue Jackets organization have gone overboard, so thank you.”
Many Blue Jackets players and coaches flew in for the memorial service, as did friends and teammates from Minnesota; Kivlenieks began his career in North America with the Minnesota Junior Hockey League in 2014.
Kivlenieks, who signed with the Blue Jackets as an undrafted free agent in 2017, started in two games for Columbus in 2021 but was expected to have a larger role next season. He appeared in the hockey world championship for Latvia earlier this year and posted a shutout over heavily favored Canada.
The Novi (Michigan) Police Department has turned over its investigation into Kivlenieks’ death to the Oakland County prosecutor’s office for review. The police department is still considering the death as accidental and did not request any criminal charges.
Said Legace: “I got to play golf with him every day in the summer. Got to hang out with him, play cards. He had that smile that, he was going to get you. He got to become one of my family.”
90,000 Legendary rescue of the Russian goalkeeper in the USA. A red light was on behind Nabokov – the puck stopped on the line – June 17, 2021
These days Andrei Vasilevsky is rewriting the history of the National Hockey League – he has already caught up with Yevgeny Nabokov and will soon become the most winning Russian goalkeeper of the best league in the world.
Sport24 recalls one of the brightest episodes in the career of the legendary predecessor Vasilevsky, whose record is about to fall.
The Russian national team went to the 2008 World Cup with a clear plan in relation to the goalkeeper’s line. Semyon Varlamov, Alexander Eremenko and Mikhail Biryukov went to Canada, and it was obvious that as soon as San Jose Sharks goalkeeper Evgeny Nabokov was released from the NHL, he would replace Biryukov in the national team’s bid. The scheme fell apart at one point – during training Varlamov twisted his leg so unsuccessfully that the next day he came to class on crutches. The tournament for the goalkeeper, who was about to move to the National Hockey League that summer, ended before it even started.
President of the FHR Vladislav Tretyak began to complain about the dominance of legionnaire goalkeepers in Russian hockey, because of which the coaching staff had practically no replacement options for Varlamov inside the country. And Vyacheslav Bykov and Igor Zakharkin began to closely follow the series of the second round of the Stanley Cup “San Jose” – “Dallas”. Nabokov in the national team was now expected even more.
“Nobody can give a 100% guarantee, but I spoke to him three months ago when I came to Chicago. With him and with Khabibulin. Since then, only Bykov has communicated with Nabokov. Eugene always said that he was ready to come. But right now it would be simply unethical to contact him. We wish him the best of luck. The Stanley Cup playoffs are very important for them. ”
Semifinal of the Western Conference was at first perfect for the Russian national team, Dallas took three starting matches – 3: 2from, 5: 2, 2: 1from. Nabokov came as close as possible to a trip to the World Cup, but at that moment there was a turning point in the series. Including thanks to the Russian goalkeeper. In game number 4, he missed only once, in the next meeting he made 24 saves. As a result, 0: 3 turned into 2: 3 and the appearance of Eugene in Quebec turned out to be a big question.
The 6th match was scheduled for May 4 and on that day the teams played an unforgettable hockey marathon. It is not known whether Bykov and Zakharkin watched this game, but if so, then they spent much more time in front of the TV. The meeting lasted 129 minutes, ending only in the 4th overtime. The Sharks have retired the Canadian defender Brian Campbell, and the Stars, despite the wild fatigue, beautifully converted the majority – the decisive touch was made by Brenden Morrow.
“The Morrow goal is the fairest thing I’ve seen in hockey. Our captain dragged us through the whole series ”, – admired the author of the winning goal Dave Tippett after the match. Well, the coach of San Jose, Ron Wilson, had no choice but to admit the validity of Campbell’s removal and the final result. But no one recalled one of the brightest episodes of that evening after the final siren.
Nabokov “lived” throughout the meeting – he chalked up an absolutely incredible 60 saves.18 of them occurred in the first overtime, and it was then that he made the main salvation of the match, the hockey year, and possibly the decade. It all started with a mistake by the goalkeeper himself, who tried to throw the puck out of his zone. This was followed by a shot from the right throw-in circle and a ricochet, after which the puck rolled towards Dallas forward Brad Richards. The Canadian kissed an empty corner heartily, but Eugene threw out his hand and performed a real hockey miracle.
A red light came on behind the goal and Richards waved his hands to indicate that the puck had crossed the line. But there was no goal – Nabokov left his team in the game.
A few days later, Nabokov already appeared in the disposition of the Russian national team, won the gold of the world championship with her, which the country had been waiting for 15 years, was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the world championship and entered its symbolic team. But instead of all this, it could well have led San Jose to the Stanley Cup, but hockey history turned in a different (happy for our country) direction.

Fantastic salvation of the Russian goalkeeper in America.Khabibulin miraculously saved his team in the Stanley Cup final: video – June 21, 2021
These days, the Russian goalkeeper of Tampa Bay Andrei Vasilevsky is heading for the second National Hockey League playoff final in his career. As the Lightning continue to battle the Islanders, Sport24 recalls the outstanding rescue of Vasilevsky’s predecessor at the Florida club.
Tampa and Calgary took very different paths to their seventh match of the 2004 Stanley Cup Final. The Lightning did not notice the resistance of the Islanders and Montreal, having only fought in the semifinals of the Eastern Conference with Philadelphia.Calgary, on the other hand, started in the playoffs from 6th position and in the first three rounds had to fight with the three best teams in the West. It is impossible to explain how the “lights”, who had not played in the playoffs at all for 7 years, managed to alternately bang Vancouver, Detroit and San Jose, in none of the series, without having the advantage of their ice. 16 years later.
But Calgary did it, and in the final they continued to perform feats. The Flames won the 1st, 3rd and 5th matches 9-3 aggregate, and in game number 6 was one judging decision away from winning the silver cup.On the scoreboard, the numbers 2: 2 were burning, when the Russian forward of the Canadian club Oleg Saprykin broke through on the right edge, pushed the puck onto a nickle, from where, after a rebound, it seemed to have crossed the goal line of Nikolai Khabibulin. Ironically, the match was judged by referee Bill McCreary, who had not seen a goal in the semifinals of the Russia-USA Olympic Games two years earlier. He didn’t count the goal this time either, but in overtime, the Lightning were more successful.
Khabibulin before the playoffs was firmly entrenched in the status of a “non-Cuban” goalkeeper. In the NHL, he did not go through more than one round, won with the national team only at the distant 1992 Olympics, but did not play a single match there, the skeptics were not convinced even by the Games in Salt Lake City, where Nikolai was recognized as the best goalkeeper of the tournament. It was only possible to get rid of the unpleasant image by winning the 7th match against Calgary, it is not surprising that on the eve of the game the Russian was very worried. Igor Kuperman, manager of the Russian Olympic team – 2002, says:
“Not long before the seventh match, we had a heart-to-heart conversation with him.Nikolay lamented: they say, after more than a hundred matches, he no longer had any strength. What to do? I had to act as a psychologist. First, I sang the anthem of Russia to Kolya, and then we began to remember “The Story of a Real Man”. The story of a pilot who, having lost both legs, managed to return to duty, came in handy as never before. ”
We must pay tribute to Calgary: an unaccounted goal and a lost sixth match did not break this team. In the decisive meeting, she fought to the end. She fought even after she got two goals back by the 15th minute of the second period – Ukrainian Ruslan Fedotenko scored a double at the “lightning”.
In the middle of the third twenty minutes, Craig Conroy closed the gap between the lights, after which they staged a real raid on the Khabibulin gate. Unfortunately for Tampa, at that moment referee McCreary decided to rehabilitate himself before the Canadian club for a mistake in the previous game: he invented the removal from the Lightning, at a decisive moment for the history of the franchise (before that the “lightning” did not take the silver cup) play in the minority.
Khabibulin was flawless in unequal lineups, but he made his main save (and possibly the main save for the entire existence of Tampa) in a 5v5 formation about 5 minutes before the end of the meeting. After another shot reflected by the Russian, the American defender of Calgary Jordan Leopold finished off the puck from an ideal position and, it seems, has already seen it in goal. But Nikolai, by some miracle, managed to move from corner to corner and save his team. An outstanding salvation – in beauty and importance to hockey history!
A few minutes later, Tampa began to celebrate winning the coveted trophy, and its Canadian forward Brad Richards also received the Playoff MVP Conn Smythe Trophy.According to many fans and journalists, this award should have gone to Khabibulin, but it seems that the goalkeeper was not upset at all:
“What a chagrin we can say if we did such a big thing: we won the Stanley Cup! We won all together – starting from the goalkeeper Khabibulin and the sniper Richards and ending with our “policemen” Dingman and Rua. It was probably the happiest day of my life! Taking this opportunity, I would very much like to thank all Russian fans for their support. After the seventh match, hundreds of messages from them came to my mobile phone. ”
Digging around on YouTube, you can find brighter rescues of Russian goalkeepers in the NHL. But no one has ever done anything more important than Khabibulin did in 2004.

Chicago goalkeeper’s rescue mill, Rangers forward’s dirty elbow and Anaheim captain’s fight
Dynamic moments of the last night in the NHL.
Chicago goalkeeper Robin Lehner scored a spectacular 3-3 mill-style rescue midway through the third period against Arizona. Clayton Keller shot the goal point-blank and, it seemed, for sure, but the Swedish goalkeeper managed to throw the trap, and then completed his performance with a spectacular somersault. The audience and TV commentators were delighted.
In regulation time and in overtime, the score did not change, and in the shootout, Arizona turned out to be more successful.
The Rangers-Vegas match was marked not only by Artemy Panarin’s double scoring volley and Chris Kryder’s with an interval of 14 seconds, but also by the dirty play of New York striker Brandan Lemieux , who just felt it was not enough just to stamp defender Cody Glass to board. He decided to end his hit with a roundhouse kick to the head.
As a result, the opponent was unable to continue the game, and the referees did not notice the violation, not writing out even a small fine to the bully. Then, in the third period, Lemieux decided to punish Vegas forward William Carrier, who challenged his opponent to a fight. Both received a 5-minute penalty.
The match was won by the Rangers with a clear advantage.
The 34-year-old captain of Anaheim Ryan Getzlaf also had to fight, who was challenged by the significantly inferior striker of Winnipeg Nikolai Ehlers .He didn’t like the way the veteran attacked him outside the gates, not very kindly. The start of the scuffle turned out to be vigorous, but soon the height and weight of Getzlaf took their toll, and Ehlers found himself on the ice.
But in the end, the fight went to the advantage of “Winnipeg” who won the match.

European Football Championship 2020
European Football Championship 2020 | Malafeev named the goalkeeper of the Russian national team for the match with Denmark.
Former goalkeeper of Zenit and the Russian national team Vyacheslav Malafeev shared his opinion on who should take a place at the goal of the national team in the match of the third round of the Euro 2020 group stage against Denmark.
Juran – on how to beat Denmark: “Every Russian footballer must complete any episode to the end”
“If you choose between Shunin and Safonov, the one who is psychologically better prepared should play. I admit that today Safonov will start at the start. Matvey should be on the rise after his debut for the national team. In addition, he played a clean sheet against the Finns. In this game, there will be a great pressure on our goal and the goalkeeper will have to work hard, ”Vyacheslav Malafeev said to Sport24.
Vyacheslav Malafeev played for the Russian national team from 2003 to 2012. As part of the national team, the goalkeeper played 29 matches, in which he conceded 24 goals.
Last season, Matvey Safonov played 27 matches with Krasnodar, in which he conceded 43 goals. In 5 matches, the goalkeeper left the goal intact.
Safonov made his debut in the national team on June 1, 2021, replacing Anton Shunin in the 63rd minute of the friendly match against Poland (1: 1). In the meeting of the second round of the Euro 2020 group stage against Finland, Safonov made one rescue and kept the gates of the national team locked.
The Russian team will play the final match of the group stage of the European Championship on June 21 at Parken Stadium in Copenhagen against Denmark, the meeting starts at 22:00 Moscow time. If Belgium does not lose to the Finns in a parallel match, a draw will be enough for Stanislav Cherchesov’s wards to leave the group.

The tragedy in Genoa, where the Morandi Bridge collapsed, which continues the highway over the Polchevera River, claimed the lives of dozens of people. Few managed to survive in this hellish mess. One of them is the former goalkeeper of the Italian football club Cagliari Davide Capello. His Volkswagen turned out to be exactly at the break point, crashed down, flew several tens of meters – and …
Capello, but not the same
Despite his high-profile football name, Davide Capello’s professional career somehow did not work out. Although all the prerequisites were: good goalkeeper height (187 cm), jumping ability, reaction, correct education received in his native Cagliari (Capello was born in Sardinia, where this club is based).
In 2004 Davide, for example, was called up to the Italian youth team (U20) and played 3 matches for it.In 2005 he reached the youth team (U21, 1 match). In the same season he played in Serie A: the major league of Italian football. True, only in the protocols, being the third goalkeeper of Cagliari.
Unfortunately, this modest status is the peak of Capello’s professional takeoff. Then there were the clubs whose names say little even to advanced football fans: Olvia, Nuorese, Aliero, Budoni (teams from small towns in Sardinia).

In 2013, at the age of 29, Davide hung up his gloves and made several appearances with Savona (Liguria), which played in Serie C. He returned to his native Sardinia and … became a firefighter, playing in his spare time for local amateurs from the Legino club.
Had he not happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time on Monday, August 13, no one in the football world would have remembered David Capello. But fate decreed otherwise.
“I’m just lucky”
At noon, when the viaduct collapsed, Capello’s car was approximately in the middle.Flying in a terrible mess about 50 meters, she got stuck in a gap formed by a concrete support and a pile of construction rubble.
Davide received no scratches. Right from the car, he called his father: “Then the bridge collapsed, I fell down with the car. Watch TV, but don’t worry about me, I’m safe. ”
“At first I didn’t understand anything at all,” Father Davide later told reporters Franco . – And then he began to shout to him: “Davide, if you can move, get out of there!” And he got out, the policeman helped him.
– It was pouring heavily, and suddenly I heard a terrible roar, and then I saw the road cut off and felt emptiness beneath me – a testimony of Davide himself, shocked by the miraculous salvation. – It was a very long flight. Endless. I realized that I was finished. Around the debris, screams and groans … Total destruction … I do not know how I was not crushed. I miraculously survived. I’m just lucky …
“I was so close to the people who died”
Ten minutes earlier, a car drove along the Morandi viaduct, in which there was a much more famous football player: the former Zenit defender Domenico Criscito, currently playing for Genoa (Serie A).

On August 14, he published a fragment of a video on his instagram, in which his son asks what time it is. “11:40,” Domenico replies.
– I am writing this message to everyone who is worried about me and my family. We are fine, although we passed the bridge ten minutes before it collapsed. I was so close to the people who died … It is impossible to imagine that the bridge over which the highway was laid collapsed in this way.We need security, we need to do something. It’s a shame, the post says.
“Everything is fine with Criscito and his family,” adds player’s agent Andrea D’Amiko. “He’s not talking to anyone now, he’s too depressed and wants to be with his family. Thank you all for your words of support. We need to recover from what happened …
The next season of the Italian Serie A starts next weekend. On August 19, Genoa play on a visit to Milan, but the question of Domenico Criscito’s participation in this match remains open.

90,000 Dynamo are content with one point – Hockey Club Dynamo Moscow
The final home match of 2017 was expected with great impatience: the army team of Moscow suffered two defeats in a row before the reporting match, and the blue and white wanted to rehabilitate themselves in front of the home audience for a major defeat in the match against SKA.
Muscovites head coach Vladimir Vorobyov made a number of rearrangements before the Moscow derby: from the first minutes Ivan Bocharov took the place in the goal, Vladislav Efremov and Dmitry Sidlyarov returned, as well as defender Gleb Koryagin. Accordingly, Evgeny Artyukhin, Dmitry Kazionov and Maxim Soloviev missed the meeting.
The match began with a solemn ceremony dedicated to the anniversary games of Alexander Eremenko and Ilya Nikulin. The goalkeeper of the blue and white on December 9 in Nizhnekamsk played the 350th match for the Moscow Dynamo, and the match against the army team became the 400th for the team captain Ilya Nikulin as part of the blue and white. In addition to representatives of the HC Dynamo Fan Club, Alexander Nikolaevich Maltsev went to the ice of the VTB Ice Palace to award the heroes of the day. The two-time Olympic champion and multiple world champion were traditionally warmly greeted by the stands, regardless of club preferences.
Before the starting throw-in, it was clear that the visiting team would have the advantage most of the time, but the score in the match was opened by the very first shot at the goal by Ilya Sorokin. Andrey Kuteikin brought Ivan Igumnov 1 on 1 with an excellent pass with the army goalkeeper and the striker sent the puck over the shoulder of the CSKA goalkeeper – 1: 0.After a missed goal, the army team seized the advantage and began to attack the gate of Ivan Bocharov. Looking ahead, it is worth noting that this evening the Dynamo goalkeeper will have 50 shots on target. Unfortunately, twice Ivan was unable to help out his team. In the fifth minute, Matt Robinson again scored to his former team in the game in the numerical majority and equalized the score in the match – 1: 1. By the middle of the period, the game calmed down a little, but only in order to give a storm of emotions to the fans of both teams at the end of the twenty minutes. It all started with the puck of Andrey Kuzmenko: having received a pass near the goal of Ivan Bocharov, the attacker of the army team did not begin to approach and threw the bottom – 1: 2. Already in the next attack, Dynamo could level the score, but Ilya Sorokin rescued his team. However, in this episode, saving the goalkeeper was not the main thing. Mikhail Pashnin and Nikita Komarov clashed in a fist fight and reminded the fans what a derby is. According to experts, the Dynamo Moscow striker won on points. With this, the first period came to an end.
Dynamo fans expected the second game segment with great apprehension. Anyway, after 40 minutes of the game, the score on the scoreboard was equal – 2: 2. In a 4 by 4 game format, Dynamo were able to upset Ilya Sorokin again. Gleb Koryagi powerfully threw at the opponent’s goal and after a series of ricochets the game projectile bounced to Igor Ignatushkin, who was easy from the metro. Until the end of the second period, the players in blue were more dangerous. Vladislav Efremov had a great chance to bring his team forward, but Ilya Sorokin played brilliantly.Dynamo won the second period for the first time in a long time, which instilled optimism in their fans before the start of the final home period in 2017.
Dynamo had to defend themselves the lion’s share of the third period. CSKA strove at all costs to get a victory in regulation time. However, this evening Ivan Bocharov was not going to lose in regular time. Towards the end of the match, Dynamo could snatch victory – Ivan Telegin went to the penalty box for the attack of the goalkeeper for two minutes.Dynamo played powerfully in the majority, but Vladimir Vorobyov’s charges were not enough for more. Dynamo could also get a victory in overtime, but the army team was able to endure the shootout, where they took skill. Greg Scott and Mikhail Grigorenko realized their attempts, but Dynamo never scored. 2: 3 in favor of Igor Nikitin’s charges.
Before the new year, the blue and white will have an outbound tour on the route Magnitogorsk – Yekaterinburg. Muscovites will cross clubs with the local Metallurg on December 27 at 17:00 Moscow time.
Head coach of PHC CSKA Igor Nikitin:
– These are three different periods, positive is the third. They played with a head, with a heart, disciplined. Good game, decent traffic on both sides. Somewhere there was a lack of completion, emotions overwhelmed. Victory is victory, we are satisfied.
Head coach of HC Dynamo Vladimir Vorobyov:
– I agree with the coach of the guests, good game, Moscow derby – Dynamo and CSKA. I am grateful to the guys that they fought. We were opposed by a strong team. Many people say that we have no character, but we have proved that we are not, we have character, we have a Dynamo spirit, and we are ready to fight any opponent. We are waiting for the injured, but for now we are giving young people a chance for the future. We will have two difficult games before the New Year, tomorrow we will recover and we will go to defeat Magnitogorsk in a good mood, however, I repeat, for us the playoffs are already underway, and every point is worth its weight in gold.
– A question about overtime: they played 4 on 4 for a long time, then 3 on 3. Was this done intentionally?
– No, they tried to squeeze out of what was. What is 4 on 4, 3 on 3.
– How would you rate Vanya Bocharov’s game?
– That Vanya, that the whole team was plastered. I went into the locker room, congratulated the team, Vanya really dragged us in some moments.

Dupin’s decisive save in the match against CSKA. The goalkeeper helped Rubin to take points
Obvious MVP of the match.
Rubin’s goalkeeper Yuri Dyupin made a crazy rescue in the end of the match of the 4th round of the Russian championship with CSKA. At that time, the score in the game was 1: 1 and added time was running. The goal in this episode was definitely not in favor of Kazan.

Yuri not very successfully repulsed the blow of Christian Bistrovich , because of which he had to jump, repulsing the blow of Adolfo Gaich on finishing.Dupin coped, apparently making a save of the tour.

Already after that moment, Rubin managed to turn the game in their favor. The Kazan attack was completed with an accurate blow Denis Makarov . The flanking midfielder succeeded in a long-range strike that was gorgeous in terms of accuracy.
After the match, the goalkeeper noted that with this rescue he eliminated his own oversight after the first hit.According to Dupin, this ending was the result of luck, which Rubin lacked in previous matches.
“I had to correct my mistake, because I had to calmly transfer the ball to the corner. It turned out that the ball swung a little, and I hit it to the side. He missed his palm, as they say. I had to get out of my nose, get up faster and run, save the team. But in principle, this is my job, I have to do it.
Any victory inspires the team – now we will better prepare for the next game, recovery will take place faster. The team will be encouraged.
Previous games lacked luck, but now it’s back. I guess in the future we will not rely on luck. Thanks to the boys for this victory, “Dupin said on Match TV following the results of the match.
Rubin’s head coach Leonid Slutskiy after the match separately noted Dupin’s contribution to this victory. According to the Kazan mentor, the goalkeeper’s saves in this game are worthy of several clean sheets. The coach also noted the fact of the team’s bad luck in previous matches.
“We were unlucky for a very long time, and under fatal circumstances. But today luck was on our side, because the key moment of the meeting is Dupin’s double rescue. Understandably, the old football truth worked. But we also worked hard to deserve this good fortune.
I am very glad that we have such a strong goalkeeper. Yura was very upset that the beginning of the season did not go as we would like. In that year, he played 13 matches with zero. In this we have never played dry, but the way Dupin acted is worth a few matches to zero.

CSKA had more control over the ball in the first half. We understood that in the second half we were obliged to seize the initiative, we had an extra day to recover. Indeed, the second half was a double-edged game. We controlled the ball for a long time, the substitutions were successful and entered the game. It is clear that when you score such a goal in the end, it’s an element of luck, but with our patience and skill, the right organization, we deserve a victory, ”Slutsky said on Match TV.
After Dupin gave another interview. In it, the goalkeeper again noted that in the episode with the miraculous rescue, he initially made a mistake. The goalkeeper also noted that after the defeat by Sochi he felt hard. Dupin noted that in the last match he made a key mistake that did not allow him to score points.
“The whole team is great. Every player went out on the pitch today. We played relatively reliably, except for a couple of mistakes. Have endured. And they waited for their moment, scored. Nice goal.

In the moment with this save, at first I made a slight mistake: the ball dodged before reaching the goal. It turns out that I wanted to translate it on the corner, but I hit it by the palm of my hand, in the side. I had to get up faster and bleed from my nose and scoop out the second blow. This is my job, I have to do it all the time. Nothing supernatural, these are ordinary working days.
It was hard because of the previous match. If we played more reliably against Sochi, more accurately in defense, we would have brought the matter to victory. This period between games was difficult for me. I made a free kick mistake when I scored Noboa. We sorted it out with the coaching staff, corrected it. Hopefully in the future there will be no such errors.
It was emotionally difficult. The pressure was that there were not enough points, while others were gaining. But the beauty of football is that you can beat any team. We prove it. Last year, Krasnodar beat, now – CSKA. With equal rivals it is necessary to concentrate more and play out the chances “, – quotes Dupin correspondent” BUSINESS Online “.
