(N.4) The Law & Economics Colloquium is scheduled to meet on Mondays and Wednesdays but may not meet every one of those days due to work performed outside of the regularly scheduled meetings times; details to be provided in the course syllabus. Students who have taken the course once may enroll a second time because the assigned readings change semester to semester.

(N.5) The M-VETS Clinic is at full capacity for Summer 2020 and will not be accepting applications for the Summer 2020 Term. A LawNews email will be sent containing information on the application process for Fall 2020.

(N.6) Information on applying to participate in Legal Writing for Law Clerks will be sent via LawNews email, and all applications are due by 5 p.m. on May 15.

(N.7) The Oral Advocacy course will meet as follows: May 22: 4-5:50 p.m.; May 23: 10 a.m.-1:50 p.m.; May 26: 4-5:50 p.m.; May 27: 4-5:50 p.m.; May 30: 10 a.m.-12:50 p.m.; and June 1: 4-5:50 p.m. The course may require at least one coaching session outside of these regular class meeting times.

(N.8)The summer internship market continues evolve.  Some students have clarity from their employers for summer internships; others have delayed start dates; and some continue to await word.  In light of the evolving summer landscape, the school is adding to the summer the unpaid Supervised Externship classes (Courses 320 and 321) to an additional summer session beginning July 6 and ending August 8.  Students can be registered for the class as soon as they are approved. The last day to add or drop this course with 100% tuition reimbursement is July 8.   Field work can commence in June but must run past July 6. Students must receive approval to be registered in the Supervised Externship and should submit the Externship Information Form found in the Externship module on Symplicity to begin the approval process. To access the form, log into Symplicity and select Externship module from the “Shortcuts” on the right side of the screen. Once approved, students will be registered by the Records Office. Further details regarding externship requirements can be found in the externship information packet.  If you have questions, email Dean Huber and Ilissa Belanger.

(N.9) The Virginia Practice Externship program will be offered this summer, but it may not proceed in the traditional fashion and may not be a placement program for any or all of its students.  In the event that routine summer placements are unavailable or greatly diminished, the Virginia Practice Externship program will focus instead on classroom instruction in Virginia litigation with the instructional assistance of Virginia Practice field supervisors.  The course will remain a three-credit, C/NC course, and assignments will mirror traditional assignments given in routine Virginia Practice placements.  Students should continue to apply to the Virginia Practice Externship as in the past by emailing Ilissa Belanger at [email protected] for the application.

(N.10) Students registering for this course will attend the WIPO-CPIP Summer School on Intellectual Property to be held from June 8 through 19, 2020, Monday through Friday, with hours that vary slightly by day. Students registering for this course must also register through WIPO’s website: https://cpip.gmu.edu/wipo/. Students taking this course for academic credit will pay tuition to Scalia Law in lieu of the registration fee. The course will consist of lectures, case studies, simulation exercises, and group discussions on selected intellectual property topics, with an orientation towards the interface between intellectual property and other disciplines. Additional details are on the WIPO website.

(N.11) This is a non-credit certificate program being offered to students free of charge. The program meets for seven Monday sessions, 6:00-7:50P, beginning May 18, 2020. Applications are being accepted via Symplicity (Job ID # 33451) and require a resume and statement of interest. Space is limited.

SUMMER TERM DATES: REGISTRATION BEGINS on April 13, 2020. Summer classes start May 18 and end July 6, 2020, and exams will be held on July 8-10.

1. BIOL 103/104: Introduction to Biology (Non-Major) If you have a B.S. then your going to need two consecutive lab sciences as part of your major requirements.
2. EVPP 110/111: Introduction to Environmental Science. Similar to the classes above these are the consecutive science classes. These classes are super easy and you only have to show up for the exams; which is awesome since the only option is the MWF 8:30- 9:20 lecture.
3. INTS 101: Narratives of Identities. I took this class under the NCLC 101 name, but the course hasn’t changed. As the name suggests this class is really focused on getting to know yourself and understanding the identities of others… meaning if you can bulls**t, even a little, you’re going to get an A. I recommend Mitchell, he is really chill and the class is 6 credits!
4. GLOA 101: Introduction to Global Affairs/ SOCI 120: Globalization and Society. These courses are equivalents and since they are the easiest class to fill the Global Understanding Core class, I highly suggest it.
5. CS 100: Principles of Computing. This course is an easy way to bump up you GPA and knock that Information Technology Core out of the way, all at once.
6. MATH 106: Quantitative Reasoning. Ugh, I know, math. I get nerves sweat just thinking about it. If you, like me, do not have to take an advance math courses, I suggest taking Quantitative Reasoning to fill the Quantitative Reasoning Mason Core requirement.
7. ENGH 302: Advanced Composition. This class is required for all Mason students so you can’t really get around it. There is a wavier process but it is almost more work than it is actually worth, however, if you really can’t fit this class into your schedule, check it out.
8. ARTH 101:Introduction to the Visual Arts. As a Mason student you have to take 3 Art credits. If you like dance, pick one from a variety of classes about dance.
9. RELI 272: Islam. This is the course that I choose to fulfill both the Religion and Non-western Civilizations requirements of CHSS. I took Professor Dakake, he was interesting to listen to, easy to follow, and the he gave the exam questions in advance.
10. RELI 100: The Human Religious Experience. This is the second Religion class here, but as the College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the largest college at GMU, I though I would mention that this will fulfill the Philosophy or Religious Studies course and it gives a more general overview of all of the worlds major religions, rather than just focusing on one.

The two Early Childhood Experience Series courses (see previous entry) are designed to be complimentary in their approaches, and while enrollment in both courses is encouraged to maximize benefits for teachers of the very young learner, they may be taken separately.

This course is designed for music teachers and classroom teachers who work with infants to children of seven years of age. During this course, participants will look at research findings and its implications on the development of an early childhood music and movement curriculum. Collecting materials, designing teaching strategies, lesson plans, and yearly curriculum, as well as developing and promoting an early childhood program will be covered. Active participation in both music and movement activities will be the basis for most instruction. This class will result in FAME (Feierabend Association for Music Education) certification as well as inspiration and renewal for your primary teaching needs.

The First Steps in Music curriculum is designed to prepare children to become musical in by being Tuneful, Beatful, and Artful. First Steps in Music for Infants and Toddlers provides developmentally appropriate activities that are well suited for children under three years old with their caregivers. First Steps in Music for Preschool and Beyond provides activities for children as young as three but appropriate for any aged child that needs to further develop their tuneful, beatful, and artful abilities. Folk songs and rhymes as well as classical music are the primary source materials that are used to develop their musical minds and abilities. Created by Dr. John Feierabend, this pedagogical approach contains everything you need to lead a music class for preschool and early elementary students, including: Echo Songs, Call-and-Response Songs, Simple Songs, SongTales, Action Songs, Circle Games, Beat Motion Activities, and more. Ample time will be spent on exploring complete lesson plans for a three-year curriculum. Participants who successfully complete this course will receive an official certificate of completion from the Feierabend Association for Music Education (FAME). 

Rachel Grimsby has 15 years experience in elementary music education. She holds a B.M.Ed. from East Carolina University and a M.M.Ed from The Hartt School, University of Hartford. She has obtained certification in all Kodály and Orff levels. Rachel is a teacher trainer for FAME, holding certifications in First Steps and Conversational Solfege Levels One and Two. Rachel is a frequent clinician at the local, state and national levels. Rachel is a member of the National Association of Music Educators, Organization of Kodaly Educators, the American Orff-Schulwerk Association, and is a current and founding member of the Feierabend Association of Music Education. Rachel will begin her Ph.D studies at Michigan State University in the fall of 2017.
