The “fashion police” have invaded the life of the Tajik society, and in the literal sense.This could have been observed just a few days ago.
On the eve of Mother’s Day (officially International Women’s Day), Tajik President Emomali Rahmon expressed concern that women began to appear in society wearing long black clothes, traditional for Islamic countries located south and west of Tajikistan.
– Our people never wore black clothes. It is not customary to wear black clothes in traditional ceremonies. You yourself know that even the mourning clothes of our people do not have a solid black color, – he explained.

President’s disapproval spurred officials to take action. First Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs Abdurahmon Alamshozoda on March 28 held a meeting in Dushanbe with the heads of departments and other law enforcement officials of the country. Alamshozoda called for “explanatory work among the population.”
This seems to mean that young women will be told not to dress like Muslim women in other countries.
Rajabboy Ahmadzoda, mayor of Khujand, the second largest city in Tajikistan, told the Tajik editorial office of Azattyk that he had instructed local law enforcement agencies and expressed his opinion that “every Tajik woman should honor national traditions in dress.”
The leadership of the city of Khujand called on law enforcement agencies to carry out raids on points where they sell “clothes made in the Iranian and Afghan style” and to prevent their implementation.
“Indiscreet outfit” of the singer
In Uzbekistan, they paid attention to the immodesty of the outfits.The dress, in which the singer Lola Yuldasheva appeared on the stage at the end of February, attracted the attention of the Uzbeknavo pop association, the state body responsible for granting licenses to performers or imposing a ban on their activities.

Yuldasheva was invited to Uzbeknavo, explained that the outfit in which she performed at the concert on February 24, “contradicts the national mentality,” and was warned that during future performances she should not dress in this way.
On the eve of the celebration of Nauryz – March 21 – Uzbeknavo issued a directive according to which the stage clothes of singers should not bare their shoulders or legs, and their movements on stage should not bear any sexual connotation. In order to avoid a repetition of the “scandalous” incident that happened to Yuldasheva, “all singers must be seriously warned before the concert” about their dress and manners, the document says.
Yuldasheva’s outfit, criticized by the Uzbeknavo pop association, was made by Tashkent designer Zulfiya Sulton.In an interview with the Uzbek editorial office of Azattyk, she noted that she does not see any excesses and considers criticism inappropriate. Sulton, 31, said she creates clothes for show business people, not “librarians or Islamic college students.”
The Uzbek state television broadcasting monopoly in the country for many years regularly broadcasts programs about foreign clothes as alien to the people. It criticizes both the “Western” style and the Islamic dress of Muslims from other regions.
There is also a movement in Kyrgyzstan, so far small, against the overly explicit Western clothing worn by young people. Critics of such outfits advise a return to the more traditional attire of Kyrgyz women.
National dress day?
The theme of national dress was also touched upon in Kazakhstan. “Historian, writer, propagandist of the Great Steppe culture” Arman Nurmukhanbetov, in an interview with the Tengrinews.kz website, expressed the idea that Kazakhstan should introduce the Day of Kazakh national dress.
Nurmukhanbetov suggests that one day a year, for example, “on the last Friday of April, May or September,” everyone should dress in clothes similar to those worn by the ancestors of the Kazakhs for thousands of years.

The authorities’ attention to fashion is part of the quest for national identity, which the governments of all five Central Asian countries have been actively pursuing since their first days of independence in 1991.
Many officials in Central Asia say that wearing the hijab is not in the local tradition. It is possible that for some peoples of this region, for example, for traditionally nomadic cultures, this is the case. But those who are familiar with the history of Central Asia during the Soviet era know about “hujum” – forcing women to take off their capes here, in particular in Uzbekistan.
The Communist Party viewed the cape as a sign of the “backwardness and primitiveness” of the peoples of Central Asia, and in 1927, on International Women’s Day, March 8, it publicly prohibited women from wearing it.
Last but not least, almost every example above concerns mainly women’s clothing. And the people who talk about fashion sense and dress traditions are men who wear Western suits to work. It seems that nothing threatens the traditional patriarchal system of Central Asia.
