The real summer heat that settled by the end of the season made us remember the most controversial item of men’s wardrobe – shorts. “Lenta.ru” plunged into an ambiguous topic and found out how and where it is appropriate to wear them.
First, let’s decide on the shape and style. The best fit is considered to be tight around the waist and buttocks, leaving enough space for a wide and vigorous step, but not fluttering in the wind with excess fabric. Within the city, do not abuse sports models, knitwear or abundant decorative details such as zippers, pockets, straps. The preppy style is preferred: it provides a lot of opportunities for integrating shorts into a men’s wardrobe with an emphasis on classic and smart casual.
The optimal length is up to or just above the kneecap. Longer pieces break the proportions when combined with the now fashionable cropped jackets in an informal style, while shorter ones look too short and physiological.
The thrifty shopper will prefer classic colors such as navy blue, khaki, latte, mint, or washed red (Bonobos, Orlebar Braun, Gap). The dandy will pay attention to seersucker shorts (textured cotton fabric in which smooth stripes alternate with textured ones) or madras (bright checkered cotton with a double-sided pattern), which will require more sophisticated combinatorics. The fashionista will obviously choose plain models with prints, embroidery in the form of animals or symbols (Gant Rugger, Ralph Lauren).
With jacket
The combination of shorts and jacket looks too extravagant for most men. Few take this risk. If Coco Chanel considered the knees the most unattractive part of the female body, then what would she say about the male?
Most major corporations agree with the creator of the most recognizable style, which, by the way, is largely based on menswear.
No wonder the office dress code overwhelmingly prohibits shorts. Of course, if you wear their shapeless varieties of wild colors with patch pockets, then nothing good can be expected from the authorities. It is worth taking an example from experienced gentlemen – Nick Wooster, for example.
Taking pity on the clerks dying from the heat, the designers, firstly, made more strict versions of shorts, and secondly, suggested wearing them with light summer jackets.
“In the summer I want to show more of my body – after all, this is the most sensual time of the year, and there is no need to hide yourself in a cocoon of clothes. Wearing a blazer over your bare body or pairing a suit top with casual shorts can look edgy, but the right pieces create the right look,” notes Lukas Ossendraiver, Menswear Designer at Lanvin.
However, it is worth commensurate the level of drama with the circumstances. In Paris, young guys wear shorts, shoes with socks and a suit jacket – and look stylish.
In Moscow, they look askance at the “dude”, but we also have a bonus for daredevils: increased attention from girls.
Outcasts
Cargo shorts rarely look good unless you use their patch pockets for their intended purpose and spit on style from a big bell tower. But designers are not going to abandon this style, and in order to tame it, they recommend choosing cargo shorts with very small pockets. In this case, they can be worn with a jacket, and with a T-shirt, with espadrilles or sneakers – to choose from.

Another rare piece is denim shorts, which the Anglo-Saxons reduced to jorts. This is the choice of rare conservatives who do not get out of the urban style and even in the heat prefer to wear a cropped version of their favorite jeans. Considering that skinny-fitting skinny jeans have become the most popular model of jeans now, jorts are of little use.
