The history of bags as we know them now
04/22/2021
First appearance of bags
The history of the bag from its origins to the present day begins in primitive society. Our ancestors had a need for a kind of bag – it was necessary to carry various objects, while freeing their hands.
Then the bag was hardly perceived as an accessory. The first bags were sewn from the skins of dead animals, made from many branches or ropes intertwined. Then this design was attached to a stick, which was convenient to put on the shoulder and thus carry a heavy burden.
If you are interested in the history of the first bag, it is worth mentioning that a bag was found during archaeological excavations on the territory of modern Germany, the creation of which dates back to 2500 BC. The bag was decorated with many dog teeth. Another interesting find turned out to be in the Alpine mountains – the remains of a primitive man, whose age is more than 5 thousand years. Not far from these remains, a kind of backpack bag was found – the product was made of a leather base, which was stretched over a V-shaped frame made of hazel sticks.
Ancient times
The history of the appearance of the bag in ancient society is connected with the development of commodity-money relations.
In ancient Rome, money was carried in special pockets or sinuses, which were sewn to clothes and hidden in the folds of a toga. In women, such pockets were located in a hidden place under the skirts. When exploring the ancient Egyptian pyramids, they found a fresco depicting a pharaoh holding a bag in the shape of a rectangle decorated with gold.
The development of society has led to class division and the history of the creation of the bag clearly demonstrates this. Now the bag indicated social status. Women from the upper castes did not carry large bags, as servants carried the burden. For ordinary women, bags were made in bundles or bundles. But African women endowed the bag with mystical properties and considered it a talisman against evil forces.
Already at a late stage in the formation of ancient society, the history of the origin of the bag led to the appearance of rectangular bags that were attached to the saddle of a horse. These products were also called saddlebags, they were sewn from animal skin or dense carpet fabric.
Middle Ages: the history of bags – interesting things from different parts of the world
In medieval society, it was customary to use coins or primitive purses in the form of fabric pouches with a leather cord. They hung such a bag on the belt of outerwear. In some nations, such as Japan and China, coins were made with holes so that they could be strung on a leather cord attached to the belt of outerwear.
European costumes had pouches for carrying tobacco, which were made from goat skin, brocade, canvas material, suede or natural velvet. In the twelfth century, belt bags appeared for carrying prayer books. They were embroidered with silver and gold threads, decorated with bells.
In Rus’ in ancient times, large bags or furs were worn mainly by men. They were made from animal skin.
Renaissance
In the fourteenth century, the utilitarian function of the bag began to fade into the background. More attention was paid to aesthetics and design.
We began to separate men’s and women’s bags.
The full history of women’s bags began in the Renaissance. They made these accessories in bright colors with an elaborate design, used velvet, precious stones, silver and gold threads, beads. They wore such bags over clothes with a drawstring or an elegant chain. The higher the position in society of a woman, the more luxurious was her handbag. Rich ladies could afford bags embroidered with pearls, silk, stones, gold and silver, and ordinary girls were limited to canvas aumonier bags.
Men’s bags were embroidered with elements of heraldic ornamentation and symbols of family coats of arms. Already in the sixteenth century, special bags began to be sewn for hunters. They were made of canvas or leather, there were several compartments inside and there were comfortable long straps.
The seventeenth century revived the fashion for pockets sewn onto clothing. Louis himself wore such a pocket on his trousers. Later, officers began to use them, since it was convenient to store cartridges in a pocket bag.
The bag could be decorated with a coat of arms or monograms. During this period, handbags appeared in women in the form of small pouches that were worn on the wrists.
During this period, Japan used its own version of the travel bag – the “bath carpet”. In other words, a square piece of fabric in which things were wrapped and transferred. The history of the appearance of such bags is connected with the tradition of visiting the bath. When, after the washing ceremony, it was necessary to roll the wet kimono into a roll and place it in a cloth rug to take it home.
The history of bag fashion received a powerful impetus to development in the eighteenth century, when the world was captured by a new trend – neoclassicism. By chance, the Marquise de Pompadour became the trendsetter of a new trend – wearing handbags with a handle. Thus, the first trapezoid-shaped ladies’ bag appeared, which was made of textiles and closed with a silk cord. Handbags were decorated with lace, embroidery, beads and beads.
In those days, love letters, cosmetics, a mirror and snuffs were stored in handbags.
The history of the bag – briefly about the nineteenth century:
- the size and shape of the bags have increased;
- a women’s accessory “nesser” appeared, designed to store items for needlework;
- inside the bag there are more compartments for storing small items;
- for the first time a frame lock appeared on a women’s handbag;
- to call a fashion accessory steel “reticule”;
- clearly began to separate women’s and men’s bags;
- there were bags for different events – a trip to the theater, walks, dates;
- decorated handbags with precious stones, embroidery, ribbons, pearls;
- , not only handbags, but also military backpacks were modernized – they began to be sewn from lightweight materials, which increased the practicality of use;
- a square-shaped mail bag with two handles gained popularity.
From the middle of 1850, a boom in the construction of railways began in the world. This is how a travel bag appeared, the history of which is directly related to the ability to travel. People needed to transport things in reliable and capacious designs, and not just carry them from place to place. At that time, there were bags for carrying luggage or suitcases from Louis Vuitton. The nineteenth century was marked by the appearance of another interesting bag model. The Scots began to use the sorran, a national bag made of leather and fur, which was attached to the belt of outerwear with belts and chains. By the way, the sorran became a detail of the national costume of Scotland and is still used today.
Beginning of the twentieth century and today
The war made its own adjustments to the design and functionality of bags. For cartridges, pouches were used, which were attached to the belt. Ordinary girls wore tabloid bags with shoulder straps, business men preferred briefcases with pockets and compartments for papers.
Ladies of the upper class chose handbags a la pompadour.
The history of bags in the 20th century:
- The 20s of the 20th century became a milestone for the emergence of a new model of handbags. In those years, the musical Runnin Wild was popular, where the song “Charleston” was performed. Actresses wore fringed handbags, which gained popularity around the world and became known as “Charleston handbags”. But the usual zipper on handbags appeared only at 1923 year.
- In the 30s, men’s wardrobe was replenished with such a bag model as a purse. They wore it mostly on the wrist.
- In the 1940s, poodle bags made of synthetic materials became incredibly fashionable.
- In the 50s, women preferred clutches and minaudières, as well as handbags with a trapezoid bottom and short handles.
- In the 60s, when rock and roll ruled the world, straight-cut bags came into fashion, which quickly took root among hippies. They decorated such accessories with ethnic ornaments, floral patterns and psychedelic scenes.
- In the 70s, sporty style was at the peak of popularity. During these years, a collection of backpacks from the Miuccia Prada brand appeared.
- In the 80s and 90s of the last century, the model included bags of different shapes and sizes with original prints.
All stories about bags, from primitive society to the twentieth century, have been embodied in the modern fashion of the twenty-first century. Fashion designers continue to experiment with shapes, materials, finishes and decor, creating stylish accessories and complementing a fashionable look.
Woman and bag: the history of the most popular accessory
02/27/2020
Like the whole history of fashion, the history of women’s handbags has a deep meaning. By the appearance of these accessories, it was possible to determine what place women were given in society in different eras and how they perceived themselves. Intrigued? Let’s connect together!
Hearth Keeper’s Bag
Over the course of several millennia, the role of women in society has been constantly changing.
This was reflected in the appearance – clothes and accessories. Initially, in a primitive society, there was gender equality: women and men equally mastered the wild nature and took care of their offspring. In such conditions, the functionality of everyday objects came to the fore. For example, the bags were used to store herbs and roots, which the women collected to feed their children while the men hunted the saber-toothed tiger. At that time, they did not even think about the beauty of accessories.
In the Middle Ages, handbags worn on the belt were popular – they included only a prayer book. This is explained simply: women at that time led a very modest life. All because they were considered the vessel of the devil and spent all the time in prayers for forgiveness of Eve’s fall into sin.
After the ascetic Middle Ages, the Renaissance paid attention to the aesthetic side of everyday life. Women were allowed to wear bright, richly decorated outfits and put on make-up.
Women’s handbag has become an addition to the costume. In addition to the prayer book, they began to put the necessary little things in it: mirrors, vials of smelling salt, etc. This is how an oblong bag appeared, similar to a modern horizontal clutch.
Traveler’s bag
Over time, the role of a homemaker changes. In the era of the flourishing of the arts and secular salons, a woman began to be perceived as an inspirer, a muse for poets, artists and composers. Women themselves began to go out more often and even to move around a little on their own, unaccompanied by a man.
Handbags have also changed shape. The travel bag, similar to a bag with strings, became popular. It was used to visit friends or relatives and take needlework with them.
The advent of rail transport has increased women’s mobility. This also contributed to the growth of independence. At the end of the 19th century, you could already meet a woman traveling alone (think of Anna Karenina).
There were bags on the frame clasp. They contained everything needed for a couple of days of travel and at the same time were light enough not to burden their owner during the trip.
At the beginning of the 20th century, during the First World War, women became nurses who looked after the wounded in hospitals, and sometimes pulled soldiers from the battlefield. They always had a bag of medicines with them. To keep her instruments and materials sterile, she had a flap and lock similar to a briefcase. After the end of the war, such a bag became popular not only among medical personnel.
Bag of an independent personality
Throughout the 20th century, a woman gained independence, and bags became ever larger. With the light hand of Marlene Dietrich, trousers came into fashion. But this was not just a borrowing of an element of a man’s wardrobe, but the first open statement that “a woman is also a person.”
During the Great Patriotic War and World War II, women at the front were not only medical workers.
We know that there were girls snipers, pilots, scouts, etc. At that time, the most common bag was an officer’s tablet – a flat horizontal bag on a long belt with several compartments for a map, compass, documents and stationery. The format was so versatile that fashionistas gradually adapted it to peacetime as well.
The most legendary bag of the 20th century is the Jane Birkin bag. It was made by Jean-Louis Dumas, designer of the fashion house Hermès. It is legendary for the fact that it laid the foundation for most modern models. Rigid frame, multiple pockets inside and out, and short handles to carry in hand and on elbow – I bet you have a couple of these in your wardrobe?
By the end of the 20th century, women had almost achieved equality. Now we can be found in all areas of public life: politics, economics, the army. Women got to space … and got the right to decide for themselves how to live. This means dressing and choosing accessories not only as fashion dictates, but as convenient for us in accordance with our lifestyle.
