Maybe Kevin Durant was meant to be in New York from the beginning.
During the 2011 NBA lockout, the current Brooklyn Nets star toured different parks in New York to shoot some hoops and have fun. After all, who wouldn’t want the (at the time) reigning scoring NBA champion on their team?
His performance at Harlem’s Rucker Park, however, was something extra special. Rucker Park was famous for pickup games that included Wilt Chamberlain, Julius Erving, Allen Iverson, and Kobe Bryant. Before New York basketball fans saw the greats play in Madison Square Garden, they witnessed their blood, sweat, and tears in Rucker Park first, where it all started.
Like any public court, Rucker Park was the place for players to show off flashy moves, handles, and dribbling.
But it was also a battleground for some of the fiercest competitors to leave it all out on the court — and what Durant did in the summer of 2011 was legendary.

Kevin Durant told a little-known story about the time he dropped 66 points in the legendary Rucker Park in Harlem, New York.
This took place on Aug. 1, during the offseason of 2011 — fresh off a 55-27 season for his Oklahoma City Thunder. Durant was contacted by Washington D.C. streetball legend White Chocolate, who asked if Durant could make it all the way to Harlem.
“He texted me and said ‘They bumpin’ up the Rucker, Slim. Do you want to play?’,” Durant told GQ Magazine. “I was like… uhhh, I’m in Oklahoma at the moment, I probably won’t get there in time. You know what? Let’s just see if I can make it.”

The lanky scorer hopped on a plane and made it in time without telling anyone about his trip.
“I remember I just put my shorts and jersey on and my shoes, then I look up and it’s packed all the way to the gate, playing music, and seeing people in the high-risers across the street turning lights on and opening windows,” said Durant. “It was like something out of a movie.”
Durant warned that while competition is stiff at the mecca of basketball, players don’t have the height or talent level of an NBA player, so they’ll try to compensate by trash-talking their way into intimidating pros like him.
“I had one that back-rimmed in and then I ran down and then the second one just went straight in, so I’m like ‘I’m in a rhythm now,’” Durant recalled. “And then after that, just shooting from anywhere. I hit four threes in a row.”
“Ten or 15 young kids come and jump on me, like 20 adults. I’m seeing the whole crowd out on the floor.”
“That much love from the crowd that one time was a lot,” he said. “It was like a quick burst of joy like I haven’t felt in a basketball court before. It was amazing.”
Summer Games Return To Rucker Park In Harlem, “The Mecca Of Street Basketball”
The Entertainers Basketball Classic, an annual summer streetball tournament hosted at historic Rucker Park in Harlem, is back. Little kids and grown men shake and bake across the freshly painted court.
A man in a wheelchair narrows his eyes from a corner by the DJ booth. A lady outside the entrance scoops plantains and rice out of aluminum trays. This is what Gus Wells, the CEO of Entertainers 155 which operates the tournament, missed last year.
“I feel like I lost my best friend. I didn’t have anything to do. And I didn’t see the people that I love seeing,” he says.
Wells has been a mainstay in the community for 45 years. He ran a local club in Harlem for five years then co-founded the tournament in 1983 with his friend Greg Marius. Together, they made the Entertainers Basketball Classic into a major attraction that fans from all over the world mark on their calendars.
The tournament is also well-known for surprise cameos from A-list athletes. NBA legends from Allen Iverson to Kobe Bryant have laced up their sneakers here. 10 years ago this summer, a local named Trevor — then 19 — was hanging out at the park when a lanky (nearly) 7-footer named Kevin Durant walked in by himself.
He remembers the scene like it was yesterday.
“He came in, this is maybe 2 o’clock. There was no one out here. They were setting up. He sat down, ate a plate of food and next thing I know he’s suiting up to play,” Trevor remembers. Durant, who plays for Brooklyn Nets, grew up in a mostly Black neighborhood just east of Washington D.C. Trevor grew up in a similar neighborhood just across the street from Rucker Park.

As a child, Trevor would look out the window onto the park from the 10th floor of his building. He wasn’t permitted to go down and play on the court until he was 12, but as soon as he got on there, he knew it was a special place. “To me, this is home pretty much. This is my playground,” he says.
In 2011, when a 22-year old Durant strolled in, Trevor stuck around. The line outside stretched down two city blocks. The windows of the building across the street lit up and faces emerged on the rooftop.
The crowd overflowed onto the court.
That game is now legendary — Durant scored 66 points, a near all-time record at the tournament. He hasn’t played here since that day, but Trevor continues to attend games and still believes the park is as special as it has always been.
“Let’s say you’ve never been to this park and you come here, it’s friendly. Like you’re welcome. It feels like home once you get in here.”
That’s the atmosphere Gus Wells has tried to create over the past 40 years. Rucker Park has its own legacy, he believes, one that he and his community work hard to maintain. “We’re not trying to be like the NBA or nothing like that, but we try to be like we are: the Mecca of street basketball.”
Rucker Park is located at 280 W 155th Street in Harlem.

The story was told by musician Fat Joe, who despite being upset about Durant and Kyrie Irving’s choice to join Brooklyn Nets over the New York Knicks, still has great admiration for both players.
In a recent interview with Complex , Fat Joe answered about who would was the best basketball player he has ever seen playing at NYC’s famed Rucker Park, And without thinking Fat Joe said, Kevin Durant. In the interview, the musician brought a story about how KD was chased in 2011 out of the park after scoring 66 points in the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic competition.
This particular game has a famous video of the moment when Durant makes the last shoot of the match and ends up surrounded by fans on the court:
“I got a wide open look, my feet were set, my shoulders were set, and I let it go and everybody ran on the court. It was probably one of the best feeling I’ve ever had … like we won a championship.”

It’s been almost a decade since Kevin Durant’s 66-point outburst at Rucker Park, yet Cardozo high school coach Ron Naclerio still remembers virtually every detail from that legendary night.
“That was the greatest shooting display I’ve ever seen at The Rucker,” Naclerio, the all-time winningest basketball coach in the history of the New York City Public Schools Athletic League, said on Monday. “He was unguardable that night.”
On Aug. 1, 2011 — during the NBA lockout — Durant electrified a very intimate crowd at 155th St. and Frederick Douglass Blvd. in Harlem by going 9-for-11 from 3-point range. He scored 28 points in the fourth quarter, and capped off a performance for the ages by draining four consecutive 3s — all of them from well beyond the arc.
After his final triple, the future Hall of Famer was mobbed by fans of all ages. KD’s fourth-quarter scoring barrage at Rucker Park has been viewed nearly eight million times on YouTube.
“Big, small, tall, short, double-teams, triple-teams — it didn’t matter who they put on him, it was going in,” Naclerio said. “And he got his buckets within the flow of the game. It wasn’t like he was taking 1,000 shots. He was very efficient.”
With Kyrie Irving (ankle) and James Harden (hamstring) both out for Tuesday’s Game 5, the Brooklyn Nets are going to need another superhuman performance from No. 7 at Barclays Center. Durant’s career-high for points scored in an NBA game is 54, established on Jan. 17, 2014. During the playoffs, he’s averaging 30.3 points.
“I’ve just got to be prepared to do everything out there just like any night,” Durant told reporters.
But back to 2011. Naclerio had gotten to know Durant through his former player at Cardozo — and fellow Texas Longhorn — Royal Ivey.
Durant and Ivey are extremely close. In fact, Durant is the godfather to Ivey’s daughter. And Durant recently advocated for Ivey — an assistant in Brooklyn under Steve Nash — to get the head coaching job at Texas.
Naclerio had received word from Rucker Park Entertainer’s Basketball Classic founder Greg Marius the day before that Durant might be showing up. But it always felt more like a rumor until the coach actually saw the 7-foot star walking up FDB toward the court on Aug. 1, 2011 — alone. No entourage. Unknowingly, Durant was also two hours early. There was another game beforehand, so he’d have to wait.
As the story goes, KD was hungry, so someone got him a pregame meal of fried chicken, collard greens, and macaroni and cheese at a local soul food joint. Before his DC Power team’s 8 p.m. tip against the Sean Bell All-Stars — which featured former Seton Hall standout Jeremy Hazell — Naclerio gave Durant some advice.
“‘Listen, this ain’t no walk in the park, some 50 and over league where you can just go through the motions and chill.
They’re gonna go at you,’” Naclerio said. “He looked at me like I was nuts.”
“‘I came to play,’” Durant told the coach.
KD — now 32, but then 22 — gave everyone in attendance a performance they’d never forget. He had 23 points in the first half, and 43 more in the second half. For context: NYC streetball legend Joe “The Destroyer” Hammond holds the Rucker Park record with 74 points.
“Sometimes, he’d just lay it in. Other times, he’d dunk it or reverse it,” Naclerio said. “And then he started pulling up from JFK Airport and it went in. And then he did it again and again and again. And then he’d head down to the other end of the floor like nothing happened, like it was nothing special.”
Even 10 years later, though, Naclerio remembers it like it was yesterday.
“Kevin is a basketball junkie. He knew about everything that was going in high school, college, the pros, streetball. He knows the history of Rucker Park. And what he did put him in the history of the park,” Naclerio said.

Kevin Durant played in a now legendary game at Rucker Park four summers ago.
The appearance of an NBA star such as Durant is always a welcome surprise at the Rucker but the Oklahoma City Thunder forward’s play that night was the real surprise.
Scoring 66 points on a dazzling display of shots, drives and dunks, Durant was just in the zone that night. After he hit four straight three-pointers, the crowd had seen enough and stormed the court, mobbing Durant in the process.
Durant recently spoke to Bleacher Report about that night, fondly remembering his last deep three-pointer. Interestingly enough, he also mentioned that his performance was fueled by a pregame meal of “fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese.”
The Oklahoman transcribed parts of Durant’s video interview with B/R:
“I got a wide open look, my feet were set, my shoulders were set, and I let it go,” Durant said. “And everybody ran on the court.
“It was probably one of the best feeling I’ve ever had … like we won a championship.”
One of the coolest parts of the Bleacher Report video is the story about Durant’s pregame meal.
Durant showed up earlier than expected for his game, so he had to wait around. When he was invited to go grab something to eat, Durant declined, but asked if someone could run to get him something since he was hungry and had time to burn.
His request: Fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese.
“He got me some good soul food and I was ready to go after that,” Durant told BR. “I felt good; I felt right at home, actually. They looked out for me. The food was great, too.”
It should be noted that Durant was 22 years old then and had only been in the NBA for three seasons so we could probably chalk up that pregame meal to his youthfulness. Durant is a seasoned NBA player now and works hard to keep his body in game shape. However, it is still amazing that Durant was able to peform at such a high level despite eating food that would put most people to sleep.

“This was the greatest shooting demonstration I have ever seen at The Rucker,” said Naclerio, the most successful basketball coach in New York City Public Schools Athletic League history.”He was unprotected that night.

Buick 110 years
Buick celebrated its 110th birthday on May 19th.
Its founder was Scotland-born David Dunbar Buick, who in 1890 began producing gasoline engines for boats.
For several years, Buick experimented with cars in his own Detroit home. He built the first experimental driving prototype in 1900, and on May 19, 1903, he founded the Buick Motor Company, which began preparations to start mass production of cars.
However, at the end of that year, Buick sold his company to Fllint Wagon Works, and the first car, called the Buick Model B, was handed over to a buyer in 1904. Four years later, Buick, led by William Crapo Durant, became a factory owned by the General Motors group.
In this new era, Buick has specialized in comfort models with an ambition to belong to the premium segment.
The American manufacturer currently offers five models. These include the Buick Verano compact sedan, the Buick LaCrosse sedan and the Buick Enclave large SUV.
In line with General Motors’ latest strategy, Buick successfully manufactures and markets its vehicles in China.
