What is the history of the German eagle symbol. How has the German eagle design evolved over time. Why is the eagle an important symbol for Germany. What are the different versions of the German eagle used today. How is the German eagle depicted on official emblems and products.
The Origins and Evolution of the German Eagle Symbol
The eagle has been a prominent symbol of German national identity for centuries, with its origins dating back to the early days of the Holy Roman Empire. As one of Germany’s most enduring state symbols, the eagle has undergone several transformations throughout history, reflecting the changing political landscape of the nation.
How did the eagle first become associated with German statehood? The use of the eagle as a royal and imperial emblem can be traced to the beginnings of the Holy Roman Empire. It adorned the coat of arms of the king, with many imperial princes also incorporating the eagle into their shields to signify their status as vassals of the monarch. The single-headed eagle represented the king, while the double-headed eagle was reserved for the emperor.
The Double-Headed Eagle of the Holy Roman Empire
When was the double-headed eagle officially adopted as the imperial symbol? In 1433, the double-headed eagle was formally introduced as the coat of arms for both the emperor and the empire. This iconic design persisted as the official emblem until the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1806.
The Eagle in the 1848 Revolution
How did the eagle symbol evolve during the revolutionary period of 1848? During the Revolution of 1848, the National Assembly in Frankfurt’s Paulskirche chose the double-headed eagle as the federal coat of arms. This decision was intended to evoke connections to the state symbolism of the Holy Roman Empire, emphasizing continuity with Germany’s imperial past.
The Single-Headed Eagle of the German Empire
Why did the newly formed German Empire opt for a single-headed eagle? Upon the proclamation of the German Empire in 1871, a deliberate decision was made to reject the double-headed eagle. This choice distanced the new state from associations with both the Holy Roman Empire and the Revolution of 1848/49. Instead, the single-headed eagle was adopted, drawing on Prussian tradition and symbolizing the new era of German unification under Prussian leadership.
The Weimar Republic’s Adoption of the Eagle
Did the Weimar Republic continue to use the eagle as a state symbol? Yes, the single-headed eagle remained an uncontested state symbol during the Weimar Republic. On November 11, 1919, President Friedrich Ebert officially announced that “based on a decision by the Reich government […] the Reich coat of arms shows the single-headed black eagle on a golden yellow background, with its head turned to the right, wings open but with closed plumage, beak, tongue, and talons in red color. […] The artistic design remains reserved for each specific purpose.”
The Nazi Era and its Impact on the Eagle Symbol
How did the Nazi regime alter the use of the eagle symbol? In 1935, the National Socialists nullified the previous announcement and decreed by ordinance that the eagle of the NSDAP (Nazi Party) would become the national symbol. While the graphic design remained largely identical, there was one key distinction: in the state emblem, the eagle’s head was turned to the right, while in the party symbol, it faced left.
The Federal Eagle of Modern Germany
How was the eagle symbol reintroduced in post-war Germany? On January 20, 1950, the “Announcement of the Federal President concerning the Federal Coat of Arms and the Federal Eagle” was issued. This proclamation almost verbatim adopted the text of Friedrich Ebert’s 1919 announcement and reintroduced the eagle design from the Weimar Republic era.
What specifications were given for the modern German eagle? The announcement provided broad latitude for artistic interpretation of the eagle, specifying only that it should be single-headed, with its head turned towards its right wing, without a crown on its head, and floating in the shield.
Variations in Modern Eagle Designs
Are there different versions of the federal eagle used in Germany today? Yes, various German institutions and organizations use slightly different renditions of the federal eagle. For example, the Federal President, the Bundesrat, the Federal Constitutional Court, and the German Bundestag all feature distinct eagle designs in their official emblems. Even on coins and the national jerseys of German sports associations, one can observe variations in the eagle’s depiction.
The German Eagle in Popular Culture and Merchandise
How is the German eagle symbol used beyond official state emblems? The eagle motif has become a popular element in various forms of merchandise and collectibles, often celebrating German heritage and culture. One example is the Deutschland Adler Eagle beer stein, a collectible ceramic mug that showcases the eagle symbol along with other patriotic elements.
The Deutschland Adler Eagle Beer Stein
What features does the Deutschland Adler Eagle beer stein incorporate? This 0.8-liter ceramic mug is crafted in Germany and features an engraved design with the German eagle as its centerpiece. The eagle is typically surrounded by oak leaves and the names of German cities, embodying themes of national unity and heritage. The stein often includes the phrase “Einigkeit und Recht und Freiheit” (Unity and Justice and Freedom), which is part of the German national anthem.
- Material: Made from high-quality German earthenware
- Capacity: 0.8 liters
- Design: Raised relief engraving
- Lid: Conical metal lid with relief decoration
- Manufacturer: Handcrafted by Zoller & Born in the Westerwald region
Why are these beer steins popular collectibles? These steins are sought after for several reasons:
- They represent a piece of German cultural heritage
- They are handcrafted using traditional methods
- The intricate designs showcase skilled craftsmanship
- They serve as both functional drinkware and decorative items
- They make unique gifts for those interested in German history or beer culture
The Significance of the Eagle in German National Identity
Why has the eagle remained such an enduring symbol for Germany? The eagle’s persistence as a national emblem can be attributed to several factors:
- Historical Continuity: It provides a link to Germany’s imperial past and long history
- Strength and Unity: The eagle symbolizes power, freedom, and national unity
- Adaptability: Its design has evolved to reflect different political eras while maintaining recognizable elements
- Cultural Pride: It serves as a source of national pride and identity for many Germans
- International Recognition: The German eagle is widely recognized globally as a symbol of the nation
The Eagle’s Role in Modern German Heraldry
How is the eagle used in contemporary German heraldry? The federal eagle continues to play a central role in official state heraldry and is featured prominently on various government documents, buildings, and official seals. Its use is regulated to maintain consistency and dignity in official representations of the state.
Guidelines for Official Use
What guidelines govern the use of the federal eagle? While there is room for artistic interpretation, certain standards are maintained for official use:
- The eagle must be single-headed
- Its head should be turned to its right
- It should not wear a crown
- The eagle should appear to be floating within the shield
- Colors are typically black for the eagle on a gold or yellow background
The Eagle as a Symbol of German Unity
How does the eagle represent German unity? Throughout its history, the eagle has served as a unifying symbol, transcending regional differences and political changes. It has been a constant presence through various forms of German statehood, from the Holy Roman Empire to the modern Federal Republic.
In what ways does the eagle promote a sense of national cohesion? The eagle’s presence on official documents, currency, and state emblems provides a visual reminder of shared national identity. Its use in sports, particularly on national team uniforms, further reinforces a sense of unity and pride among Germans.
Controversies and Debates Surrounding the Eagle Symbol
Have there been any controversies regarding the use of the eagle symbol? While the eagle is generally accepted as a national symbol, its use has occasionally sparked debate, particularly in relation to its historical associations. Some discussions have centered around:
- The eagle’s connection to different political regimes throughout German history
- Concerns about nationalism and the appropriate use of national symbols
- Debates over the specific design and artistic interpretation of the eagle
- Questions about the relevance of traditional symbols in a modern, diverse society
How have these debates influenced the use of the eagle symbol? These discussions have contributed to a more nuanced understanding of the eagle’s symbolism and have sometimes led to subtle changes in its representation. They also reflect ongoing conversations about national identity in a changing world.
The Future of the German Eagle Symbol
What is the likely future of the eagle as a German national symbol? Given its deep historical roots and widespread acceptance, the eagle is likely to remain a central symbol of German statehood for the foreseeable future. However, its interpretation and use may continue to evolve to reflect changing societal values and Germany’s role in the modern world.
How might the representation of the eagle change in coming years? While maintaining its core elements, the eagle’s design may see subtle updates to:
- Reflect Germany’s commitment to European unity and international cooperation
- Incorporate more inclusive and diverse representations of German identity
- Adapt to new media and digital platforms where national symbols are displayed
- Balance tradition with modern aesthetic sensibilities
The German eagle, with its rich history and enduring presence, continues to serve as a powerful emblem of national identity. From its origins in the Holy Roman Empire to its current role in the Federal Republic, the eagle has adapted and persevered, remaining a recognizable symbol of Germany both at home and abroad. As Germany continues to evolve as a nation, the eagle symbol is likely to adapt as well, maintaining its significance while reflecting the values and aspirations of modern German society.
Deutscher Bundestag – Der Bundesadler

Friedrich Adler – Historic – Jason Jacques Gallery
Adler’s wonderful work—designs for textiles, ivory carving, and leather goods, produced both by hand and industrially—began to appear in 1897 in art journals such as Kunst und Handwerk and Deutsche Kunst und Dekoration. He provided designs for functional and decorative pewter to manufacturers including Orion and Walter Scherf & Co. (under the trademarks Isis and Osiris), Reinenmann, Lichtinger, and the Peter Bruckmann silver company. Adler was also recognized for his furniture designs. His reputation was firmly established by virtue of receiving a commission to design the entrance hall of the Württemburg display for the international exposition of decorative art in Turin, 1902. Friedrich Adler (1878-c1942) was born in Laupheim, a city in the southwestern German province of Württemburg. He belonged to Jewish family of artisans and trades people who had settled there in the 18th century. His father, Isidor Adler, was an affluent confectioner. In 1876, Isidor hired an architect to design an Italian Renaissance building to house his new grocery and candy shop on the ground level, and family in second story living quarters on Kapellenstraße. Relief ornamentation on the façade, including a bust of the Greek god Hermes, attested to Isidor’s affinity for the arts.
Reflecting on his childhood, Friedrich Adler later recalled that nature provided him with inspiration that would inform his later creations. When Adler was six years old, he began to study with a young art teacher who taught drawing and painting from plaster casts. Intrigued by the casts, young Adler developed an interest in plaster models which would soon extend to the modeling of other materials. After attending the local Jewish community school, Adler moved on to the Laupheim Latin School and an international school in Mittenberg am Main. While his brothers became established in their professions—Edmund became a professional pianist, who played for synagogue and town events; from 1894 to 1898 he studied at the School of Applied Arts in Munich. After working independently for two years, he enrolled at Hermann Obrist’s and Wilhelm Debschitz’s school, where he would later teach.
Until 1907 his designs were stylistically affiliated with Munich Jugendstil, particularly as practiced by his teacher, Hermann Obrist. After he began teaching in Hamburg in 1907, he adopted the more stringent line of Viennese Jugendstil, probably through the example of his fellow faculty member Carl Otto Czeschka. Highly regarded as an artist and teacher, Adler was nominated as head of the master course at the Bavarian Applied Arts Museum in Nuremberg.
Adler is considered by some to be the first to create Judaica in a modern style. In 1908, he designed a silver spice container with clean lines, whose perforated cover rises in the center to form a handle. Three years later, he created a bulbous Torah crown for the Hamburg Temple based on nineteenth-century shapes, whose surface, however, is an expression of Judgendstil artistic principles. Plain areas of polished silver alternate with perforated panels composed of sinuous leafy forms. The companion Torah shield was completely covered with ornament. In 1912 and 1913, Adler created multiples of Judaica for domestic use: a seder set, kiddush goblets, etrog and spice containers, and candlesticks. His seder plate had a new broad and low outline, enclosing solid areas of silver contrasting with perforated ornament based on nature. In 1914, he formed an association with a firm in Regensburg to produce a line of pewter and brass Judaica.
The culmination of these efforts was Adler’s design for the interior of a synagogue, exhibited in 1914 at the Werkbund Exhibition in Cologne, which was cited for its unity of forms and decoration. The specialist journals were unanimous in their praise, writing that Adler’s work was “up to the best Werkbund standard, in both inspiration and design.”
In 1933 the Nazis rescinded Adler’s teaching permit and forced him to retire. Under the auspices of the Hamburger Jüdischer Kulturbund, however, he was able to continue giving lectures and courses on a private basis, an a number of his writings from this period have survived. On July 11, 1942 Adler was deported to Auschwitz. The date of his death is not known.
Sustainable mobility in Germany – Alumniportal Deutschland
Do you think that it’s harder to get the general news media to report on green issues than on other stories?
Michael Adler: Definitely. I sometimes feel that many journalists are only interested in the majority. The Greens are just a small party with eight per cent of the vote, so only a small portion of the readers want to know anything about so-called green issues. The large parties are able to play up what are really just side-shows, such as the debate over road-pricing, and then that fills the newspapers – especially when it involves staffing issues.
And always, when there’s no big industry backing an idea, coverage quickly gets dropped. Car sharing has now become a popular topic because providers like Deutsche Bahn and BMW are getting involved. Cycling sometimes comes under the scrutiny of the journalists, too, but ‘walking’ is, as ever, basically ignored as a potential subject. It’s not really an environment topic and it’s not really mobility, and it’s just not big enough to get into the business pages.
What subjects do dominate reporting in the mobility field?
Michael Adler: Above all, of course, the car. It’s still simply THE central topic when anyone talks about mobility. I like reading the Süddeutsche Zeitung. I find its coverage is balanced and they take a clear position. But it still makes me sick to read reviews of the latest SUVs and sports cars in their ‘Mobiles Leben’ (‘Mobile Living’) section. Especially when they use a kind of zoological language, for instance, when a car is compared with a leopard that’s hunting a gazelle across the savannah. But they don’t mention things like a liveable city.
What is a liveable city?
Michael Adler: Jim Walker, founder of the global conference for pedestrians ‘Walk 21’, explained it like this: ‘When, as a family, you don’t want to move away from a place, and when, as an elderly person, you feel comfortable there, then there is something profoundly right about that city.’ In a liveable city, you can be sure it’s barrier-free and that children are safe on the streets. It’s all about redesigning spaces and footpaths and cycle paths, and it’s about having modern public transport.
If you use only a car to move about the streets, you won’t talk to your neighbours any more, and it gets more dangerous for other people on the roads. In a liveable city, people meet each other and get to know one another. This also promotes social cohesion.
HG Adler Collection | Feature from King’s College London
The collection
The library of HG Adler is a unique and important collection of printed material about the Holocaust and the history of the Jews in Eastern Europe. The collection comprises over 1,100 books, pamphlets and journals, many of them extremely rare, and was placed in the Foyle Special Collections Library by the writer’s son, Jeremy Adler, Professor Emeritus of German at King’s College London.
The collection comprises HG Adler’s reference library, used in the research for his Holocaust studies, Theresienstadt and Der verwaltete Mensch (1974), and representing the core of his life and work. It includes works in German, English, Czech, Polish, Dutch and Italian, among others, with a large proportion dating from the early 1930s to the 1950s. The books range from standard texts to rare wartime propaganda leaflets, from James MacDonald’s 1935 Letter of resignation to the League of Nations to Adler’s heavily-annotated copy of Hannah Arendt’s Eichmann in Jerusalem (1964) and an early typescript of Jakob Robinson’s response, And the crooked shall be made straight (1965). Adler played an important part in the debate surrounding Arendt’s analysis of the Adolf Eichmann trial.
An undoubted strength of the collection lies in its many early first-hand narratives, personal accounts of persecution and survival which are essential sources for any study of the Holocaust. Numerous presentation copies from Gerty Spies, Jacob Robinson, Hans Buchheim, JC Odic, Heinrich Böll and many others testify to Adler’s wide-ranging and enduring friendships.
One exceptional rarity among the collection is the picture book, Bilder aus Theresienstadt (1944), containing eighteen hand-coloured lithographs by the Dutch artist Jo Spier, himself a prisoner of the ghetto. The book is believed to have been published as SS propaganda in 1944 in an edition of ten copies and just two other examples are known to survive.
The collection also includes a rare copy of Der Anti-Nazi, a handbook of facts and counter-arguments for refuting Nazi claims and antisemitic propaganda. Produced in 1930 by a secret organisation of German Jews, the handbook was published as a collection of loose leaves in a cardboard portfolio; the unusual format was designed for flexibility and ease of use during public meetings.
Another key work is Leo Baeck’s Der Rechtsstellung der Juden in Europa, an unpublished typescript of which no more than five copies were produced. A twelve-month cataloguing project by Foyle Special Collections has enabled all items in the HG Adler Collection to be added to the library’s online catalogue, with the rarest and most physically vulnerable material continuing to receive appropriate conservation treatment.

Unsere Adler in Gefahr – NABU

90,000 Former German goalkeeper Rene Adler made a transfer app – players and clubs will make deals without agents
Rene Adler at the end of the 2000s looked like the next great goalkeeper in the German national team. He entered the goal of the Bundestim after the end of Jens Lehmann’s career, made his debut in the legendary match with Russia (remember the barbell of 19-year-old Dzagoev?) And successfully flew for balls in the selection at the 2010 World Cup. But before the championship in South Africa, Adler broke his rib, gave way in the frame to Manuel Neuer and then only watched on TV as Manu makes history and turns into a new Yashin.
Around the same time, Rene lost the competition in almost native Bayer Bernd Leno, gave up the bench in Leverkusen and turned to Hamburg. He jumped nines for five years for the “dinosaurs”, left for Mainz for two years and after a season in the reserve ended his career as a very boy – at 34.

“Body confidence just disappeared.” Former goalkeeper of the German national team Adler retired due to injuries
05/01/2019 At 13:16
Instead of a revolution on the football field, Adler started a revolution in the transfer business.During Euro 2020, the German announced the launch of the 11TransFAIR app – a play on words with “transfer” and “fair”. In an interview with Bild, he called him a tinder for football players, dating app for athletes and professional clubs.
“Obviously, players increasingly want to pursue their own careers. They don’t want to be completely dependent on some kind of advisor, ”exclaimed Rene. He cited Bayern’s Josua Kimmich and Manchester City star Kevin de Bruyne as examples. Both negotiated new agreements on their own and without the participation of agents, and KDB prepared a presentation for City managers at all – convincing with advanced statistics why it was important for the team and worthy of a salary increase.
How everything works in 11TransFAIR: football players need to register, confirm their profile through a professional license and, if necessary, take a video call so that the specialists make sure that this is not a fake. Then the player specifies the necessary parameters – the desired salary, the signature bonus, and also the assessment of his own game. Adler stressed that users will be offered a maximum of four rating points for football skills, the remaining 16 will be filled in by an automatic algorithm.
Clubs, in turn, look for candidates according to the criteria and prescribe wishes for salary and contract length. But in order to avoid bias, at 11TransFAIR everything is carried out anonymously – football players and companies do not see each other’s names and names in order to negotiate exclusively on game parameters. In case of a large number of matches, the system shows a matching score (also a play on words, something like “match count”). If a football player is satisfied with an offer from a club, he clicks the green button and sees which team is interested in him.
Rene Adler says that while the app is aimed at players from the first four German divisions, registration is open to guys from other countries – like England, from where young footballers often come to the Bundesliga.“We want to make the non-transparent market transparent. For young people to choose not only from Lubeck and Meppen (two cities in Germany), but also from Hungarian or Australian clubs. They need to find the best place to continue their careers, “Adler is sure.

Rene said he hopes to evolve the transfer business through digital. The former goalkeeper believes that the next generation is more and more online, so making football deals online is a logical step forward. While 11TransFAIR is a startup, and the creators (Adler attracted partners and investors to the company) do not receive any commission for the contracts of users with professional clubs, top managers of sports firms pay only officially to FIFA.
So Rene Adler didn’t become the next Oliver Kahn or even Jens Lehmann. But now he is doing everything to go down in history as Bossman 2.0 – that is, to shake up the transfer market and play by new rules.

Shock for the German coach: the best goalkeeper does not go to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup | Football in Germany and Europe: Bundesliga, UEFA, World Championships | DW
Bayer and German national football team goalkeeper Rene Adler will not defend the team’s goal during the World Cup in South Africa. The goalkeeper explained his refusal to participate in the main football tournament by the need for surgery on a broken rib, the DAPD agency reported on May 4.Adler will not have time to recover by the beginning of the championship, which starts on June 11.
“The hardest decision in my life”
“I made the hardest decision in my life, but participating in the World Cup would be irresponsible to myself, to my team and to the national team. From a medical point of view, the trip for the championship would be possible, but the constant pain would not allow me to show the best result. In such a tense and responsible tournament, this is unacceptable, since every player must be in his best sports form, “the official website of the Bundesliga quotes the footballer.
Coach disappointed
Coach disappointed
Germany coach Joachim Löw reacted with disappointment to his number one goalkeeper’s decision. “I was informed of Adler’s health problems this morning. Of course, I am very sorry that due to the operation he will not take part in the World Cup. The coaching team will soon decide to replace the goalkeeper, and at a press conference on Thursday, On May 6, we will announce who will defend the goal of our national team in South Africa, “Leo said on May 4.According to Reuters, the top contenders for a spot in the German national team’s goal are 24-year-old Manuel Neuer of Schalke 04 and 28-year-old Tim Wiese of Werder Bremen.
Two more players dropped out of the national team
Kevin Kuranyi was deprived of the opportunity to participate in the main football tournament
, recently injured with a knee injury, and Schalke 04 striker Kevin Kuranyi, who has not been recruited by coach Leo.
The coach of the national team denies that his decision was influenced by a conflict a year and a half ago, when Kuranyi left the stadium without permission during a match in Dortmund against the Russian national team. However, a number of football experts associate Loew’s decision with this incident. For example, FIFA executive board member and German football legend Franz Beckenbauer criticized the decision of the national team coach. “Leo made the mistake of flatly refusing to return Kuranyi to the national team.He could express his opinion about Kuranyi’s act and temporarily exclude him from the team, but expelling him forever was too tough decision, “Beckenbauer said.
