What are the best defense lacrosse shafts for 2021. How do durability, weight, and material affect shaft performance. Which features should players consider when choosing a defensive shaft. How do carbon fiber and metal shafts compare in terms of strength and flexibility.
Factors to Consider When Choosing a Defense Lacrosse Shaft
Selecting the right defense lacrosse shaft is crucial for optimal performance on the field. Several key factors come into play when making this important decision:
Durability: The Cornerstone of a Defensive Shaft
For defensemen and long-stick midfielders (LSMs), durability is paramount. These players subject their shafts to intense physical stress through checks and clashes throughout the game. A shaft that can withstand this punishment is essential for consistent performance and longevity.
How can you assess a shaft’s durability? While it’s challenging to gauge strength by sight or touch alone, customer reviews and expert opinions provide valuable insights. Advanced shafts typically offer superior durability, resisting breaks, dents, and cracks more effectively than their basic counterparts.
Weight: Finding the Perfect Balance
The weight of a defensive shaft significantly impacts a player’s agility and speed on the field. A excessively heavy shaft can hinder a player’s ability to execute quick checks, intercept passes, and even engage in offensive play when necessary. However, it’s crucial to strike a balance between weight and durability.
Why is this balance important? Extremely lightweight shafts often sacrifice some degree of strength. The goal is to find a shaft that offers both manageable weight and robust construction. Many of the top defensive shafts on the market achieve this balance through the use of advanced materials and innovative design techniques.
Material: Carbon Fiber vs. Metal
The debate between carbon fiber and metal shafts has been ongoing in recent years. Each material offers distinct advantages and potential drawbacks:
- Carbon Fiber Shafts:
- Higher strength-to-weight ratio
- Greater flex
- May require an adjustment period for players used to metal
- Prone to catastrophic failure (shattering) when they do break
- Metal Shafts:
- Minimal flex
- Familiar feel for most players
- More likely to develop dings and dents
- Generally remain usable even with minor damage
Is one material objectively superior? The choice ultimately comes down to personal preference and playing style. Some players prefer the responsiveness of carbon fiber, while others value the consistency and familiar feel of metal shafts.
Ergonomics and Grip: Enhancing Control and Comfort
The shape and finish of a defensive shaft play crucial roles in how it feels and performs in a player’s hands. These factors can significantly impact control, comfort, and overall playing experience.
Shaft Shapes: Finding Your Perfect Fit
Defensive shafts come in various shapes, each offering a unique feel and potential advantages:
- Octagonal: The traditional shape, offering a familiar grip
- Concave: Octagonal with curved-in sides for enhanced control
- Ridged: Multiple curves on each side for a more textured grip
- Asymmetric: Combining different shapes on opposite sides for versatility
How can you determine the best shape for you? The most effective method is to test different shapes with your gloves on. This hands-on approach allows you to experience how each shape feels during actual gameplay conditions.
Grip and Finish: Enhancing Control
The surface texture of a shaft significantly impacts its grip and feel in your hands. Different materials and manufacturing processes result in varied finishes:
- Metal shafts: Often feature a sandblasted finish for improved grip
- Composite shafts: Generally smoother, but some models incorporate raised textures for enhanced control
Why is grip important? A shaft with good grip allows for more precise stick handling, more controlled checks, and better overall performance. As with shape, it’s essential to test different grip options while wearing your gloves to find the most comfortable and effective option for your playing style.
Budget Considerations: Balancing Cost and Quality
When selecting a defensive lacrosse shaft, it’s crucial to consider your budget alongside performance features. Fortunately, the market offers quality options across various price points.
Price vs. Performance: Is Expensive Always Better?
While high-end shafts often boast advanced materials and cutting-edge designs, it’s important to note that the fundamental shape and size of lacrosse shafts remain relatively consistent across price ranges. The difference between a mid-range and top-tier shaft may not be as significant as the price gap suggests.
How can players maximize their equipment budget? Consider allocating more of your budget towards a high-quality lacrosse head. The best lacrosse heads often offer more noticeable improvements in performance, durability, and overall play compared to differences between shaft tiers.
Smart Shopping: Finding Value in Older Models
For players looking to balance quality and affordability, considering previous generation models can be an excellent strategy. As manufacturers release new versions, older models often see significant price reductions despite minimal changes in performance or features.
Why consider older models? This approach allows players to access high-quality shafts from reputable brands at more accessible price points. The performance difference between a current model and its immediate predecessor is often negligible, making this a smart way to maximize value.

Maintenance and Care: Extending the Life of Your Defensive Shaft
Proper maintenance can significantly extend the lifespan of your defensive lacrosse shaft, ensuring consistent performance throughout the season and beyond.
Regular Inspection: Catching Issues Early
Implementing a routine inspection of your shaft can help identify potential problems before they become serious:
- Check for cracks, dents, or unusual flex in carbon fiber shafts
- Look for deep scratches or bends in metal shafts
- Ensure end caps and butt ends are secure
Why is regular inspection important? Early detection of damage allows for timely repairs or replacement, preventing unexpected equipment failure during crucial moments of play.
Cleaning and Storage: Preserving Performance
Proper cleaning and storage practices help maintain your shaft’s grip, finish, and overall integrity:
- Clean your shaft after each use with a damp cloth to remove dirt and sweat
- Allow the shaft to dry completely before storage
- Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight
- Avoid leaving your stick in extreme temperatures (e.g., in a hot car)
How does proper care impact performance? Regular cleaning maintains grip effectiveness, while proper storage prevents material degradation, ensuring your shaft performs consistently throughout its lifespan.
Adapting Your Play Style to Your New Shaft
Switching to a new defensive shaft may require some adjustment in your playing technique. Understanding how to adapt can help you maximize the benefits of your new equipment.
Flex and Feel: Adjusting Your Checks
Different shaft materials and constructions can significantly impact the feel and responsiveness of your stick:
- Carbon fiber shafts often have more flex, which can affect the timing and power of checks
- Metal shafts typically offer a more direct and immediate response
How can you adapt to these differences? Spend time practicing your checks with your new shaft, focusing on the timing and follow-through. You may need to adjust the power and speed of your movements to achieve optimal results.
Weight Distribution: Enhancing Control and Agility
The weight and balance of your new shaft can influence your overall stick control and maneuverability:
- Lighter shafts may allow for quicker stick movement but might feel less substantial during checks
- Heavier shafts can provide more power in checks but may slow down transitions
What’s the best way to adapt to weight changes? Focus on drills that emphasize stick handling, ground balls, and quick directional changes. This practice will help you become accustomed to the new weight distribution and maximize your agility on the field.
The Future of Defensive Lacrosse Shafts: Emerging Technologies

9 Best Defense Lacrosse Shafts for 2021
How to Choose a Defense Lacrosse Shaft
Having trouble deciding which defense shaft to go with? Here are some things you may want to consider when comparing options.
1) Durability
As a defenseman who will be laying checks throughout the game, the most important thing is to find a shaft that will hold up well for you throughout the season. Whereas attackmen and middies might be able to get away with weaker shafts, defensemen and LSMs cannot.
It can be challenging to judge the durability and strength of a shaft just by simply looking at it or holding it, however. I recommend reading/watching customer reviews (like I’ve done to create this guide) to figure out if a defensive shaft will hold up well.
More advanced shafts are typically very durable and are tough to break, dent, or crack.
2) Weight
It’s also important to find a relatively lightweight shaft that won’t slow you down throughout the game. Super heavy shafts can make laying checks, intercepting passes, and even dodging harder since you won’t be able to move your stick as fast.
The tricky part is finding the right balance of weight and durability since most extremely light shafts are a bit weaker. Most of the shafts listed on this page are light, yet durable, thanks to the advanced materials they are made of.
3) Material
In the past decade or so, many companies started developing carbon fiber shafts along with the more traditional metal shafts.
People often ask me which they should go with. The honest answer is that it all depends on your personal preference.
Carbon fiber shafts typically have a higher strength-to-weight ratio and flex more than metal shafts. They may take a while to get used to, however, if you are used to playing with a metal shaft.
Metal shafts, on the other hand, don’t flex much, and switching from one metal shaft to another should feel pretty natural. Metal shafts get dings and dents in them more easily than composite shafts—but these don’t make them unusable like composite shafts once they crack.
Composite shafts are more prone to catastrophic failure than metal shafts because they shatter instead of just getting a few small dings. So while an average carbon fiber shaft may hold up better, once they break, they are pretty much useless.
4) Shape
Another thing to think about when deciding which defense shaft to get is what kind of shape you prefer.
There are a few different options, including octagonal (traditional shape that is just an octagon), concave (octagonal with the angled sides curved in), ridges (multiple curves on each side), and asymmetric (on side is octagonal and other is concave/other shape.
Like material, there is no “best” shape. It really comes down to your preference. I recommend trying out some of your teammates’ shafts to see which feels the best to you with your glove on. It’s important to try it with your glove because that’s what you’ll be playing with in a real game.
5) Grip/Finish
Aside from the shape and material of your shaft, the finish of it also affects how it feels in your hands.
Most metal shafts have some sort of sandblasted finish which just makes them a bit more rough. Composite shafts are usually a bit smoother but some (such as the ECD Carbon Pro 2.0) have a raised texture to give you a better grip.
This is also something that you’ll want to test out with your gloves on to see what feels the best to you.
6) Cost
Like with any lacrosse gear you are buying, you have to think about your budget, of course. Luckily, if you don’t want to spend a ton on a defensive shaft, you can still get a quality option at a relatively affordable price.
At the end of the day, all shafts are generally the same shape and size. There really isn’t that much difference between a mediocre shaft and a top tier shaft.
If you are looking to save on your stick, I would recommend going with a cheaper shaft and nicer head. The best lacrosse heads are noticeably different than mediocre heads. They often have better face shapes, are more durable and stiff, and have superior scoops.
With that being said, if you are trying to find a cheaper lacrosse shaft, I recommend looking at older models. Often these are discounted as new versions come out despite there being little difference from generation to generation.

Lacrosse Shafts Requirements For Every Position: Attack/midfield, Defense and Goalies
- For Attack/Midfield Players
Attackers and midfielders often need to be very fast and agile and they also need to have aggressive moves. For these reasons, their lacrosse shafts need to be short and light in weight so that it enhances their game rather than weighing them down.
Attack and midfielder shafts are usually the shortest, measuring between 37”-42” long at youth lacrosse level; and 30”-32” at NCAA lacrosse level.
Players playing the defense positions often block shots and throw harder checks and so, as a result, their lacrosse stocks need to be longer for extended reach and made of more durable materials for longevity. Defense shafts are often the longest of all lacrosse shafts, measuring between 42”-62”. 60” is often the standard shaft length used by all high school and NCAA level defensive players though.
Goalies need a long shaft that allows them to guard the goal effectively but at the same time, they also need to move quickly and with agility. For these reasons, goalie lacrosse shafts need to be between 40”-72” long, but 40” is often used as the standard length.
Features To Consider When Buying a Lacrosse Shaft
A. Types of Shaft Grips
Lacrosse shafts now come with many different grip variations, which means that players no longer need to tape up the stick or use grip spray all in a bid to get the grip that they want.
- The first type of grip is where you have sandpaper coating on the stick, also known as the grip. Just as the name suggests, this type of grip is gritty and this enables it to offer a firm hold even when the player is in gloves and it’s a rainy day.
- The second type of grip is the slick grip which is essentially a rubberized coating. This does not feel gritty, like the grip grit, but when the player is in gloves, this grip feels sticky and offers a feel. Lastly, the traditional gloss-type grip comprises a smooth finish and the downside to this is that the stick can get very slippery when wet.
B. Types of Shaft Shapes
Different lacrosse shaft shapes create a different feel in the player’s hands and this influences the feeling the shaft has on your grip and cradling.
Octagon is by far the most common lacrosse shaft shape and this is because it has smoother edges for fast stick work and crossovers.
Additionally, octagon shafts offer the most texture and feel through the glove, but they are not the only shaft shape available.
Basically, the main options are between a rigid shaft and a more circular one.
While the former offers tight angles, the circular ones have rounded corners and both options offer different feels fit for different players.
C. Material Used In Lax Shafts
Aluminum shafts are rather a low cost, and so they are more popular with beginner and intermediate level players who may just be picking up the sport.
Depending on the levels of the aluminum grade used, these shafts will have varying weights and durability but generally, aluminum lacrosse shafts tend to be the most lightweight of all shafts.
Additionally, these sticks also tend to be very versatile and easy to use. The reason why this shaft is not popular among more advanced players is that it can dent rather easily when used for rigorous play. Also, because they lack a natural grip, these shafts will not offer the advanced grip desired by more advanced lacrosse layers.
Titanium was the first technological advance in lacrosse shafts, prior to which aluminum and wood were the only shaft material options. Although other materials have not been introduced especially for advanced players, titanium still remains as a popular option owing to its strength and durability as well as its superior lightweight feel.
Scandium is arguably the most popular lacrosse shaft material available today because it has the highest strength-to-weight ratio.
This way, players get to enjoy lightweight speeds combined with impressive durability. At the same time, scandium sticks come at a very affordable price point and this gives rise to the perfect shaft for top-level lacrosse players.
- Bends / Scandium-Titanium
When titanium and scandium are mixed together, they create a superior strength-to-weight the ratio which neither of the materials can achieve on their own.
For this reason, blended shafts will have the lightweight feel of Scandium and the comparable durability of a titanium shaft which gives players the best of both worlds. For midfielders, these are the best shafts on the market.
Composite shafts are made from carbon fiber and they have flex profiles which make the stick very versatile and perfect for attack players playing the offense.
The weight-to-strength the ratio for these sticks is rather impressive, and players are assured of a shaft that gives unrivaled shot velocity without the stick bending or denting.
The other advantage of composite shafts is that they have a natural grip and they feel cold in hot weather and warm in cold weather.
D. The Flex of The Shaft
Howe stiff do you want your shaft? When the ball is in the head and the player starts their shooting motion, some sticks offer the ability for the shaft to flex with the ball and this delivers more power into the speed of the ball when released.
Carbon fiber composite shafts are known for their flex factor and they offer a variety of flex options ideal for different players depending on their flex preferences.
Flex basically allows you to shoot the ball harder and this feature is often particularly desired by attackers and middies.

There were batons with handles on the sides and then those became collapsible, and somewhere in all that (or before) there was something called a “friction lock baton.” Identify and recognize the different types of expandable batons that are most commonly used in law enforcement and security. An expandable baton is typically composed of a cylindrical outer shaft containing telescoping inner shafts (typically 2 or 3, depending on the design) that lock into each other when expanded.

Kozlovsky and Tatarsky swells will be included in a new tourist route along the Belgorod zasechnaya line
The Tambov Region is taking part in a project to recreate the Belgorod notch line. Work on the identification of cultural heritage sites of the Belgorod notch line of the 17th century and the organization of a new tour route along them is carried out on behalf of Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Department for State Protection of Cultural Heritage Objects of the Tambov Region has already carried out archaeological research.According to the results, the list of identified objects of cultural heritage included the “Kozlovsky shaft of the defensive line”, located in the Nikiforovsky and Sosnovsky districts.
Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the study of the objects of the Belgorod zasechnaya line and organize a tourist route along them last year after a meeting with public figures. Historians say about the great value of the objects of the Belgorod line and good prerequisites for attracting tourists. With the aim of developing cognitive tourism, work is being carried out on the scientific study and further use of the identified objects of the Belgorod zasechnaya line.
Belgorod notch line passed through the territory of modern Belgorod, Voronezh, Lipetsk, Tambov regions. This is a fortified line on the southern borders of the Russian kingdom, created in the 30-50s of the 17th century and served to protect against the Crimean Nogai raids. It included fortified cities and other defensive structures. Later, Voronezh, Ostrogozhsk, Belgorod, Korocha, Usman and Tambov grew out of the fortresses.
For further work on the reconstruction of the Belgorod zasechnaya line of the Ministry of Culture, together with the regions, an action plan was drawn up.According to this plan, in 2021, in the territory of the proposed location of the Line, an archaeological survey is to be carried out and objects of archaeological heritage are to be identified. After that, conduct their state historical and cultural expertise and include them in the Unified State Register of Cultural Heritage Objects.
The Department for State Protection of Cultural Heritage Sites of the Tambov Region carried out these measures ahead of schedule. The list of identified objects of cultural heritage includes the “Kozlovsky shaft of the defensive line”, located in the Nikiforovsky and Sosnovsky districts. The boundaries of the territory of the specified object have been approved. This year, a historical and cultural examination has already been carried out and the corresponding document has been sent to the Ministry of Culture to include Kozlovsky Val in the Unified State Register as an object of cultural heritage of federal significance.
Part of the Belgorod zasechnaya line is also a federal cultural heritage site “Tambov watch line”, located on the territory from the village of Lysye Gory to the village of Kuzmina Gat, Tambov region.

90,000 How is the reconstruction of the Defensive Wall in Penza going?
Having imagination, it is not difficult to imagine how the guards looked into the distance from the height of the fortress wall, waiting for the next raid of nomads.Defensive wall of the city of Penza. At this historical site, reconstruction continues, but there is very little time left to wait.
Probably every schoolchild in the city knows that the history of Penza began with the construction of a wooden fortress. It stood for a hundred years, in accordance with the general plan from 1875, the pretty dilapidated walls were dismantled. They remembered about it only in 1980, when a memorial complex, a defensive rampart, appeared in Penza. The mortar with the bell has become the hallmark of the capital of the 58th region.Forty years later, the complex will be opened in a noticeably updated form.
“In principle, all construction and installation work has been completed for today, next week 2 thousand square meters of rolled grass comes. There are benches in the yard, we plant grass, we put benches, we make lighting, and the project in our unit will be completed, ”explained the director of the Central Park of Culture and Leisure. V.G. Belinsky Elena Savelyeva.
For the first time in history, anyone will be able to climb the shaft, without risking their health, using a comfortable staircase.
“We considered several options for supporting the stairs so that the historical part, which is inside, would not be affected,” said the director of the Central Park of Culture and Leisure. V.G. Belinsky Elena Savelyeva.
The defensive rampart, contrary to popular belief, is of natural origin. People in the seventeenth century only ennobled the natural slope. Archaeologist Gennady Belorybkin investigated the 17th century war ramparts in Mokshan and Pyash. There is nothing like them here.
“Sorry, this is a very complex engineering structure. The surface was leveled, clay, sand was poured, silt was poured, inside – wooden structures, covered with stone, covered with birch bark, so many technologies were used that it was impossible not to notice the shaft, here, when they were digging, no traces of the shaft or the wall were found “, – said archaeologist, doctor of historical sciences, professor of PSU Gennady Belybkin.
No traces of the fortress itself have yet been found anywhere in Penza. According to one version, the eastern wall stood on the site of buildings along Belinsky Street; the traces were destroyed in the 19th century. All that was found was a moat. It passed under the sidewalk, and part of the road was on Kirov Street.
“Used for its intended purpose, as well as in everyday life. There is so much medieval rubbish in this ditch. Everything is crammed with pots, glass, bones, ”said Gennady Belorybkin, an archaeologist, Doctor of Historical Sciences, Professor of PSU.
The mortar with the belfry has taken its place again after reconstruction in its original place. But the direction of the road itself has changed. We’ll have to deploy the weapon.
Long bars for the memorial, had to be brought from St. Petersburg, the old ones were a little rotted, but the lanterns were made and developed in Penza. They will stand for a long time, however, as will the granite finish.
“This granite is from the Urals, there is granite, from the revival, the Kola Peninsula, so everything is natural. We can say that the embankment of St. Petersburg is made of the same material, ”said the director of the contractor Denis Bryukhankov.
The connection of lighting systems will begin next week.It will be especially beautiful here in the evening.
But this corner of Penza will appear in full glory only after the completion of the overhaul of building number eight on Belinsky Street. But that is another story.

The first persons of the city and the region took part in the solemn event.
During the theatrical performance, the participants of the holiday were greeted by historical characters in the images of famous Penza residents – Mikhail Lermontov, Alexander Kuprin, Mikhail Saltykov-Shchedrin, Vissarion Belinsky, as well as defenders of the fortress and representatives of the peasant class.
To date, paving has been completed, lighting of the upper walking area, decorative elements made of granite, a metal fence have been installed, a mortar gun and a belfry have been restored, and the stop pavilion has been updated.Landscaping work continues.
At the moment, construction and restoration work on the Defensive Wall continues.
– Viewpoints will allow you to observe the right and left bank parts of the city of Penza, the Sura river bed. We are negotiating with the owners of the land plots to continue the improvement of this complex. I think the completion of work in the historical center of Penza will attract the attention of both the townspeople and our guests, – the press service of the regional government quotes Governor Ivan Belozertsev.
The rampart, built in 1666, is an object of cultural heritage of federal significance, an archaeological monument.
On the site of the ancient earthen rampart that surrounded the wooden fortress Penza during the founding of the city and served to protect it, in 1980 a memorial complex was erected – the historical composition “Penza’s defensive rampart of the 17th century”. The composition includes a fragment of the fortress wall with an alarm tower, near which a cast-iron mortar cannon is installed, and opposite the rampart there is a monument to the First Settler.

Defensive structures of Ryazan
January 2010 | Category: Architecture | Views: 11236
In its present form, the area once occupied by the ancient city is a plowed field (in the form of an irregular quadrangle) surrounded by ramparts. The city was located on a high steep bank of the Oka, which made it almost impregnable from the side of the river. On the floor side, two small rivers flowed into the Oka – Chernaya and Serebryanka, whose waters filled the ditches that surrounded the city.
The defensive structures of Old Ryazan in the form of huge ramparts still rise today, representing one of the rare monuments of the era in terms of power and preservation. The city was beautifully located over the river and dominated the surrounding countryside. A large section of the Oka was surveyed from the elevated bank to the mouth of the Proni river, navigable in antiquity. The connection of defensive structures with the landscape was so organic that even now, when, apart from the ramparts on the surface of the earth, there are no architectural monuments left, the advantages of the territory chosen by the ancient builders for the foundation of the city are quite clear.
The natural conditions favorable for the defense of the city were supplemented by powerful ramparts. Ramparts are most often the only surviving architectural monuments of one or another Old Russian city. Their excavations provide, in particular, the most interesting materials for the history of ancient Russian wooden fortifications.
The northern section of the settlement is separated from the rest of its area by a rampart and a moat; this rampart, in contrast to the outer ramparts, encircling the territory of the settlement from the southern and eastern sides, we will call internal. The northern section and the rampart and moat enclosing it constituted the most ancient part of the city. It was here that there was a Mordovian village, then the most ancient Slavic settlement. Throughout the history of the city, this site was the most densely populated; most of the craft workshops were located here.Gradually, as the population of the city grew, its territory expanded southward; To protect this territory, external ramparts were built, now stretching for about 1500 m. Previously, the ramparts were much longer and went along the cliff above the river.
Staroryazan ramparts were a powerful structure, which was a reliable defense against the enemy. Nowadays, they have swum heavily, and therefore their size is much smaller than the ancient ones. The height of the ramparts is now 9 m, the width at the base is 23-24 m, and the width at the top is 3 m.The depth of the ditch reaches 8 m, the width in the upper part is 20 m and along the bottom part is 7 m. In the southern side, the ramparts are much smaller. There are currently three gaps in the eastern side, called the Old Pronsk, New Pronsk and Isad gates. The last two were dug relatively recently.
The inner shaft, examined in 1950, was made of pure yellow clay, without any admixture of earth; no timber structures were found inside or on the embankment. Only a layer of the later filling made to raise the embankment can be traced. The inner shaft, built in the 10th century, was renewed in the 11th-12th centuries. In the XIII century. part of the rampart swam and blocked the destroyed dwellings close to it.
Excavations in separate areas of the outer pala, carried out by the expedition of the Institute for the History of Material Culture in 1945 at the New Pronskie Gate and in the southern part of the settlement and in 1950 at the Isad Gate, made it possible to reconstruct the system of defensive structures of Old Ryazan.
The ancient top of the rampart passed at a height of 7.5 m.In the embankment and above it there was a wooden (oak) wall, consisting of separate log cabins, covered with earth inside. The length of each of these log cabins ranged from 1 to 3 m, the width (thickness) of the wall was 2.20 m. The ligation of the logs was carried out in a flash-off (with the remainder). The height of the part of the wall preserved in the embankment is 1.2 m. Apparently, it rose above the embankment by at least 2 m, and along the top of the wall there was a roll of logs that served for movement. From the outside, the wooden wall was covered with earth up to half its height, and the stakes of the tyna were driven into the embankment of the rampart. The second row of stakes, driven into the ground that filled the wooden frameworks, served as a parapet. At the bottom, the stakes were sharpened; notches (grooves) were made in them, into which transverse logs were inserted to fasten the stakes of the tyna together. In the upper part of the tyna there were loopholes.
In some areas (for example, at the New Pronskie Gates) the tyn was “oblique” – inclined to the embankment, and not vertical. On the inner side of the rampart, wooden structures were exposed to the foundation. To facilitate lifting onto the shaft from the inside, steps were cut into its embankment. The slopes of the rampart and the ditch were reinforced with a deck of logs. The shafts were built of clay, which was mined here from the ditch. The missing amount of clay, obviously, was taken inside the settlement. Wooden structures provided greater strength of the embankment of the shaft, made it steeper and ended with a sheer wall.
Wooden fortifications went along all the ramparts of Ryazan in a continuous line. Thus, the fortifications of Ryazan were a clay-wooden system that was widespread in the Slavic lands.
As a result of the excavation of the rampart at the Isad Gate (1950), the data on the construction of wooden structures obtained during the previous excavations at other parts of the rampart were confirmed. The annals do not indicate the date of the construction of the fortifications, but the presence of large temples on the territory surrounded by ramparts, the construction of which dates back to the end of the 11th – beginning of the 12th centuries, as well as a large population at the time of the Tatar invasion, suggests that the bulk of the ramparts was built no later than the 12th in.
The excavation of the embankment clearly shows five layers, indicating five construction periods. The oldest outer rampart lies on the cultural layer of the 11th century, which is confirmed by the construction of the rampart at the very beginning of the 12th century. The first fortification was a low (about 1.5 m) embankment, in front of which lay a rather wide berm and a moat 3 m deep. A tyn of thick and high logs ran along the top of the rampart. A thin layer of ash can be traced under the embankment, which was probably formed before the construction as a result of burning grass and trees along the line of the future rampart.Obviously, back in the first half of the XII century. the embankment was raised, in connection with which the ancient tyn and the moat were filled up. New wooden structures were placed on top of the shaft.
During the XII century. the defenses of Old Ryazan were repaired twice, and, finally, the embankment of the rampart was greatly increased; on its top were those gorodni and tyn that were discovered by excavations. These wooden fortifications perished in December 1237 during the capture of Ryazan by Batu. Traces of a fire that destroyed the fortifications are clearly revealed during excavations in the form of burnt beams, accumulations of coal and ash, red from the effect of fire on clay, etc. After the fire, the wooden fortifications were not restored.
The topography of the city, the history of its gradual development, settlement and fortification are largely known thanks to the systematic archaeological excavations organized in our Soviet era. The Soviet method of archaeological excavations in large areas made it possible to successfully solve many complex problems in the history of ancient Russian cities.
The archaeological study of Old Ryazan was comparatively easier than other ancient Russian cities, since the entire area of the ancient city is open for excavations.Archaeologists could choose any site for excavation that was important for solving a particular issue, which is impossible in such ancient cities as Kiev or Novgorod, where modern buildings and intense urban life do not allow them to freely choose an area for excavation.
Settlements | Cultural heritage NSO
Settlements are called settlements fortified by a system of defensive structures such as a ditch – a rampart. The first settlements in Siberia appeared in the Bronze Age. On the territory of the Novosibirsk Region, in particular, the most ancient settlements date back to the Late Bronze Age – a transitional period to the Early Iron Age.Fortified settlements of this period were studied in our Iskitim and Zdvinsky districts.
As a rule, fortified settlements were located on elevated areas of river or lake terraces, on high outliers among a developed floodplain, capes formed by small rivers and streams flowing into a larger river or lake or capes formed by natural river bends, on the heights of islands, etc. …
The design features of ancient settlements depended on various circumstances of the life of the ancient population.Defensive structures could be erected around the settlement for the purpose of direct protection from military danger. In this case, a fairly powerful line of defense was built around the village, a ditch was dug, a rampart was poured on which a palisade was installed. A more complex system of defensive structures could often represent two lines of ditches and ramparts with protruding sections of bastions. On the cape settlements, as a rule, the most fortified was the section of the approach to the settlement, on the other sides, the natural features of the terrain were used – the steep slopes of the cape itself.
In the absence of a great military threat, the defensive system of the settlement could have a more simplified form. In this case, the moat and rampart could have the character of fencing the inhabited area of the settlement from the entry of wild or domestic animals. Often the rampart could be poured not on the inner, but on the outer side of the ditch of the settlement, which, in turn, had an insignificant depth and width, and the fortification built on the rampart was a fence – a wattle fence. Such constructive features of the defensive system on the territory of the Novosibirsk region are recorded quite widely on the settlements of the early Middle Ages.
Relief signs of fortified settlements, in addition to the remains of the defensive system, are also represented by the remains of housing and outbuildings, which today look like rounded and oval depressions or embankments with flattened tops. The traces of the remains of dwelling buildings, recorded on archaeological sites of the settlement type, depend on the design features of the existing dwellings. If the dwelling was a structure deepened into the ground, its modern relief feature is represented by a depression, if it was an above-ground structure – an embankment, often surrounded by a ring of small ditches or pits.Housing structures, as a rule, were located along the perimeter of the fortification system and in rows in its central part.
As a rule, fortified settlements had one – two or more entrances, the places of which today stand out in the form of small bridges in the ditch and on the rampart. With the growth of the population of the ancient settlement, housing buildings were erected outside the defensive system on sites adjacent to the settlement. This is how settlements were formed, which could later be annexed to the common settlement by expanding the defensive system and covering it with a new section of residential buildings. In this case, a complex line of defense is recorded on the remains of such a settlement with ditches running inside the site of the settlement and dividing it into separate sections. However, the expansion of the defensive system of the settlement, with the growth of the settlement around it, might not have occurred.
A fairly large number of settlements of different times are known on the territory of the Novosibirsk region, and archaeological research was carried out on many of them. Among the most famous monuments of this type, one can note, for example, the settlements of the transitional period from the Bronze Age to the early Iron Age of Chicha-1 in the Zdvinsky District of the Novosibirsk Region and Zavyalovo-5 in the Iskitimsky District.Among the medieval settlements, we have a number of monuments known from the chronicle sources, such as the Voznesenskoe settlement (Ton-Tur) and the Ignatiev settlement in the Vengerovsky district, the Chinyakha and Tyumen settlement in the Kupinsky district, the Yurt-Akbalyk settlement (Pash-Tura) and the Chat town in the Kolyvan region, etc. On the territory of modern Novosibirsk there was a settlement of the Chat Tatars, known as the “Devil’s settlement”.

Kaliningrad fortification. Part 1. Lithuanian val .: dmitry_sasin – LiveJournal
Konigsberg is an outpost of the German states in the east, the capital of East Prussia. It was founded as a castle and remained a fortified city until its fall in 1945. Only Sevastopol and Vladivostok, and even the Peter and Paul Fortress, can be cited as Russian analogues. But Koenigsberg is much older. The city began with a castle and, developing in breadth, surrounded itself with new defensive rings. And here the analogy with Moscow, with its Kremlin, Kitay-Gorod, and earthen ramparts, is already appropriate. The medieval ring of city walls was built in 1355-1370, and each of the three cities (Altstadt, Kneiphof and Löbenicht) had its own walls.
The next ring of defensive structures – The first rampart defensive loop was built in 1626-1634. It surrounded the already unified city and included earthen ramparts, 32 ravelins and nine gates. In 1657, the Friedrichsburg fortress was built, which blocked the river route to the city from the sea. However, these fortifications did not prevent the Russian troops in 1758 and Napoleon in 1807 from taking over the city without any problems. Here again an analogy with Moscow suggests itself. The powerful walls of the Kremlin could not prevent either the Poles or the French from occupying the city.
When Prussia recovered from the French invasion. the construction of defensive fortifications continued. In the middle of the 19th century, construction began on the Second Shaft Defensive Bypass. The perimeter of the second bypass partially coincided with the perimeter of the first. The author of the project for the fortifications of the second bypass was the general and engineer-fortifier Ernst Ludwig von Astaire. Eight gates were built ( part 1 and part 2 ), numerous bastions, reduits, defensive towers, earthen ramparts were reinforced with stone walls, and internal premises were made in them. But the development of weapons and military art in general made all these fortifications ineffective and many of them were demolished by the Prussians themselves, without ever having been in battle. But a lot of interesting things remained. Today we will see the Lithuanian shaft – a complex of defensive structures that protected the right-bank part of the city from the east.
The Rosgarten Gate is considered to be the beginning of the Lithuanian Wall.
2. A moat with water begins on the back side of the gate, connected to Oberteich (Upper Pond).
The Lithuanian shaft stretches to the Pregolya River, its first version was built back in 1626. Later, in 1843, work began on the second rampart fortification.
8 full earthen bastions, 2 semi-bastions and three wooden gates with earthen embankments were built on the site of the Lithuanian rampart: the Rosgarten, Neue Sorge and Zakheim gates. Soon the street, which runs parallel to the fortifications, received the name “Lithuanian Wall”. The street runs along the western side of the rampart, and the moat along the eastern side. Now the rampart with a moat is a park area – a great place for walking.
3. Alexander Nevsky Street runs across this bridge.
4. In Königsberg, Kranzeralley passed along it, it was the road leading to the city Krantz, now Zelenogradsk.
5. The road to Krantz was covered by the Oberteich bastion.
6. Walk along the wall of the Lithuanian shaft.

8. These are traces of the Great Patriotic War.
9. The bottom of the wall is lined with carefully fitted boulders.
10. The moat fills the stream that flows into the Pregolya. To maintain the required water level, several dams have been built along the stream bed.
11. This one clearly has a mechanism. allowing to regulate the water level.
12. And there are also simple ones, without regulation.

14. Same.
15. The next bastion is Grolman

18. It is not easy to get into such an embrasure.
19. Some passages are hidden in the thickets.

21. One such entrance to the dungeon is cultivated.
22. And glamor.
23. In fact, the preserved section of the Lithuanian rampart ends here, at the Royal Gate. Further, behind the Königsallee (now Gagarin Street), separate fragments have survived.
24.In the building of the Kupferteich Bastion’s reductionite, there is now a beer bar,
25. But the Litovskiy Val street itself goes further south to Pregolya. Dwelling houses stand in place of the shaft.
26. Zakheim Gate. Here we ended our walk that day.
27. The last defensive structure in the eastern direction is the Reduit-caponier of the Lithuanian bastion. It is located behind the fence, not accessible for visiting. Bastion Lithuania was located on the right bank of the Novaya Pregolya River, had a pentagonal shape and was extended beyond the line of the ramparts in order to be able to bombard the ditches with flank fire.In the center was a semicircular reduite, extended forward to cover the bridge. On the right flank of the bastion there was a reduit-caponier designed to cover the flanks of the bastion from the side of the river. The historical monument is completely abandoned. From the Zakheim gate we will go back, but not from the east of the rampart, but from the west.
28. Reduit of the Grolman bastion. Backside.
Bastion “Grolman” was built in 1851 according to the project of Ernst Ludwig von Astaire, named after the reformer of the Prussian army, General Karl Wilhelm von Grolmann. It includes: a horseshoe-shaped reduite with a courtyard space for sheltering personnel, an earthen rampart, a caponier, two half-caponiers, two casemates of the gorzha part, an entrance gate and a bridgehead. Bastion “Grolman” was supposedly connected by an underground passage with the barracks “Kronprinz”.
During the assault on Konigsberg in April 1945, the command post of the 367th Infantry Division of the Wehrmacht was located in the Grolman bastion, the fortifications were severely damaged. In the post-war years it was used as a vegetable store. In 2007, the Grolman bastion received the status of a cultural heritage site of regional significance. Since 2006, the facility has been undergoing reconstruction in order to turn it into a casino. But in connection with the law on gambling zones, any reconstruction was curtailed.
Until the 2010s, an architectural workshop was located in one of the parts of the bastion, which was engaged in the construction of the entire city center in the mid-2000s. It was planned to restore the building as a hotel for the 2018 World Cup.

30.Now there is a sauna and a car service.
The rear of the bastion was covered by the Kronprinz defensive barracks, built in 1843-1848. designed by Ernst Ludwig von Astaire. The structure is a pentagon with massive towers at the corners. The Kronprinz barracks were connected by an underground passage to the Grolman bastion. It was not just a hostel for the military, but a fortified structure. From the side of the city, the barracks has the shape of a blunt bastion. The shape of the defensive towers indicates that the entire barracks was viewed as a redoubt, which was supposed to block the path of an enemy who had already invaded the city. The vaults are so strong that they can withstand shelling. In the center of the barracks there is a spacious courtyard used as a parade ground.
In April 1945, there were battles near the walls of the barracks, but the barracks itself was not subjected to an assault and was surrounded by Soviet troops until the general surrender. That is why the object is in good condition. In 2003, a part of the defensive barracks – the Kronprinz redan tower – was transferred to the operational management of the State Center for Contemporary Art to create a museum, exhibition and scientific information complex.
31. The image shows damage in the southeast corner.
32. Until 1933 the 1st Infantry Regiment (Ostpreussisches Grenadier-Regiment 1 Kronprinz) was stationed in the barracks “Kronprinz” -th separate tank repair regiment of central subordination and a training vehicle battalion of a tank division. In 1989, the lecture halls of the Kaliningrad Higher School of Management were housed in the building of the barracks, and the bar of the same name is located in the eastern wing of the barracks. Now in the barracks is a branch of the Moscow University of Technology and Management.
It turns out there are even East Prussian Cossacks!

34. As well as at the city gates, the task was to make a Gothic decoration here. But the wide-set structure and wide windows do not betray anything Gothic. And only the top in the form of a pointed arch gives grounds to notice the originally set goal. The narrow Gothic windows of the upper floor could well have been used as embrasures.Only it is not clear where the guns were supposed to fire from?

A little about terminology. At first I confused reduction with redoubt, I had to dig a little. Redoubt is a fortification surrounded on all sides by an earthen rampart or wall and designed for all-round defense. Reduit is a fortification inside a fortification (in particular, it can be located in a redoubt), the last line of defense in which weapons, ammunition and food supplies were stored. The garrison of the fortification retreated into it and could defend itself for a long time. Many Reduits are equipped with underground passages, thanks to which the defenders could leave the fortification after the depletion of supplies.
