FOXBOROUGH — As the Cannons Lacrosse Club officially started a new chapter in the Premier Lacrosse League on Friday, the club seemed right at home while battling Redwoods Lacrosse Club at Gillette Stadium.
That was in part due to the Cannons-heavy crowd on hand, but it was also due to the way the team established itself as a formidable force from the opening faceoff. Though the Cannons ultimately fell, 12-11, to the Redwoods in a back-and-forth battle with several lead changes, they proved that they belong among the best of the best.
“We’re a new team, but we’re a talented team,” Cannons attacker Lyle Thompson said. “We’re not an expansion team. We’ve got a talented locker room.”
The PLL officially relaunched the Boston Cannons as Cannons Lacrosse Club in January. Paul Rabil, the league’s co-founder and a Cannons captain, scored three goals in the second half to highlight a 6-0 flurry that turned an 8-5 halftime deficit into an 11-8 edge with 7:46 remaining. The Redwoods responded with four unanswered goals, which soured an otherwise memorable night for the Cannons, yet they were encouraged afterward despite the setback.
“I loved how our guys competed tonight,” said Cannons coach Sean Quirk.
“The energy at Gillette was tremendous. A lot of Cannons fans.”
Quirk, who guided the Boston Cannons to a 2020 championship in Major League Lacrosse, was thrilled to compete in the PLL after a long offseason of initial uncertainty followed by plenty of buildup and excitement.
Rabil said this is what fans can expect when they see a PLL game unfold in person.
He was excited to see many young fans in the crowd.
“I thought the atmosphere tonight was really great,” Rabil said. “There were a lot of momentum swings. It was really a template for how the PLL goes.”
Off to a hot start
Many consider Thompson to be the best player in the world, and he showed why Friday night in his PLL debut.
The first pick in the entry draft scored twice in a span of three minutes, helping the Cannons build an early 3-0 lead.
His first delivery came less than a minute in, as he motored past a defender and converted from in close with minimal room to operate.
He swerved around the net again on the next one, with less resistance, and easily got it to stick.
Redwoods coach Nat St. Laurent said it was the first time he had sat down with his defensive coordinator and focused specifically on how to stop one player.
At the same time, he made it clear the Cannons have a lot more to offer than just the explosive Thompson.
“That team’s going to cause a lot of problems in this league,” St. Laurent said. “We got lucky today.
No action for Hogan
Many players contributed for the Cannons, but there was one notable name not on the field. Former Patriots star Chris Hogan earned a roster spot through training camp, however Quirk opted not to dress him this weekend.
Quirk noted in May that Hogan trains like no one he’s seen in the lacrosse industry, yet it appears he still has more room to grow before the Cannons put him on the field.
“The guys in this locker room have supported me through my journey and I’m going to do the same for them from the sidelines this weekend,” Hogan tweeted Friday.
“The journey is not over. It’s just beginning.”

Temporary Home for the Cannons
The Boston Cannons are one of Major League Lacrosse’s original teams, in operation since 2001.
The Cannons have led a nomadic existence over their first 14 seasons, calling Cawley Memorial Stadium in Lowell, Nickerson Field at Boston University, and Harvard Stadium in Allston home at various times. The Cannons have won one league championship, in 2011. For the team’s 15th season, the Cannons will once again have a new home, as they will play their home schedule at Gillette Stadium in suburban Foxborough.
Harvard’s plans to replace the turf at Harvard Stadium this summer, along with a dearth of available dates, meant that the Cannons would not be able to host a game until June of the 2015 season. In response, the Cannons packed their bags and moved 31 miles south to Gillette Stadium, home of the New England Patriots of the NFL, New England Revolution of MLS, and UMass football. The team hopes that their move out of the city will attract those fans who prefer not to travel to the aging, difficult-to-access Harvard Stadium. For now, the Cannons and Gillette Stadium have only signed up for a one-year partnership, but neither side has closed the door on extending the relationship further should the Cannons’ suburban fanbase come out in great numbers to Foxborough.
Food and Beverage 4
Concessions at Cannons games mirror the offerings available at Patriots games. Be warned, you will be paying NFL prices for food and beverages at a Cannons game.
The Cannons open up four concession stands for Cannons games, each one with a unique theme and menu. Stands offer pizzas, chicken wings and tenders, burgers, chicken sandwiches, and cheesesteaks, and sausages, bratwursts, and hot dogs. Food quality is excellent, as is Gillette Stadium’s record of food safety, as it is annually ranked at or near the top of all venues nationwide.
Pepsi products are featured at Gillette Stadium, and fans can even shell out $7 for a souvenir cup. Unfortunately, it is a cup featuring the New England Revolution soccer team. Fans looking for an adult beverage will not be disappointed with the selection at Gillette Stadium, as local brands such as Sam Adams, national brands such as Budweiser, and local craft beers such as Harpoon are sold. Be warned that each stand features a different brand, so you may have to search a little to find your favorite.
Again, you will be paying NFL prices to drink at Gillette Stadium, as beer prices start at $9. Fans looking for mixed drinks or wine should seek out the margarita cart on the concourse.
Atmosphere 3
The Cannons present New England lacrosse fans with the typical game day presentation. Unfortunately, any noise and energy generated by the crowd is swallowed up by the enormous emptiness of Gillette Stadium.
Only the eastern concourse of Gillette Stadium is opened for Cannons games. Fans can sit in sections 104-115, all of which offer great sightlines for the action on the field. All seats available are individual seats with plenty of room and cupholders. Gillette Stadium’s signature lighthouse and bridge will be to your right as you take in the action, and both of the stadium’s new video boards are in use throughout the game.
All the typical elements of a minor league game presentation are here, including an emcee presiding over contests and giveaways during play stoppages, a dance squad, and a mascot.
If you aren’t a fan of AC/DC, be warned that the team plays “For Those About to Rock” after every Cannons goal. Be prepared to hear the song at least a dozen times a game. Much of the energy present at Cannons games comes from the countless youth groups in the stands, jumping around, yelling throughout the game, and trying hard to attract the attention of the cameramen roaming the stands. Unfortunately, even with a crowd of 10,000 in the house, the sheer size of Gillette Stadium swallows up any noise generated here.
Neighborhood 5
Any long time visitor to Gillette Stadium and its predecessor, Foxboro Stadium, can tell you what a wasteland the area around the stadium used to be. The strong tailgating tradition present today in Foxboro began because there was literally nothing to do around the stadium. Fortunately for visitors to the area, that began to change in 2007 with the development of Patriot Place, an open air shopping center and entertainment venue located on the former site of Foxboro Stadium.
Today Patriot Place consists of a multitude of retail stores, over a dozen restaurants, entertainment venues including a bowling alley, theater, and concert venue, a nature trail, cranberry bog, four star hotel, outpatient health care center, and the Patriots Hall of Fame.
Fans coming to Gillette Stadium for a Cannons game who do not wish to partake in the tailgating scene can choose from eateries ranging from the upscale (Davio’s Steakhouse, Twenty 8 Food and Spirits), to national chains (Red Robin, Five Guys Burgers). Choices run the gamut here, from American cuisine (CBS Scene, Toby Keith’s I Love This Bar and Grill), to fine seafood (Skipjacks, Blue Fin Lounge), to trendy clubs targeting the younger crowd (Bar Louie).
If you would like to enjoy some shopping before the game, the stores at Patriot Place do not focus solely on sporting goods as you might expect from a mall located at a football stadium. In addition to the dozens of stores here, the Showcase Cinema de Lux shows first run movies in their theaters, Showcase Live contains a 16,000 square foot concert hall, and Splitsville is a combination bowling alley/restaurant/night club.
The presence of Patriot Place makes the area a destination, and many fans make a day out of their trip to Foxborough, combining a game with some shopping, dining, and perhaps a show.
While Gillette Stadium’s “neighborhood” may not be an organic one, everything you need or want can be found there. You can’t ask for much more than that.

When coming to a Cannons game at Gillette Stadium, be prepared to be bombarded by youth teams from across New England. With lacrosse ranking as one of the fastest growing youth sports in the nation, the Cannons have smartly directed their marketing and game day presentation towards this demographic.
The Cannons are annually at or near the top of MLL in attendance, and despite their move to the suburbs, they continue to hover near the top of the league’s attendance standings. Overall attendance has dipped somewhat from previous years, but crowds have increased as the season has progressed, and crowds of over 10,000 have come to cheer on the Cannons.
Unfortunately, a sellout crowd of over 10,000 makes little impact in a football stadium that seats close to 70,000, even when you cram them into a small section of the stadium. As you might expect from a crowd made up primarily of youth groups, there is a lot of activity in the stands, but sadly much of it is not directed towards the action taking place on the field. Fans are up and down throughout the action, and many are only peripherally involved in watching the game at hand. When the crowd does get into the game, the sheer size of Gillette Stadium ensures that the place doesn’t get too loud.
Access 4
Fans who have attended Gillette Stadium for Patriots games or concerts may be surprised at this high ranking. With only a fraction of the stadium opened for Cannons games, Gillette’s legendary traffic jams and parking problems are not an issue here.
Driving is the only way to get to Gillette Stadium for Cannons games. The stadium is located near the intersection of Interstates 95 and 495, accessible via Route 1.
With capacity reduced to approximately 15,000, the pre- and post-game congestion so familiar to local fans is nowhere to be found. Fans park in the Putnam Club lots on the east side of the stadium, and enter the stadium via the east gate. Only the concourse on the east side of the stadium is utilized, and only the 100 level seats on this side of the stadium are open. Still, there is more than enough room for a typical Cannons crowd. Facilities at Gillette Stadium that were built for full-stadium events are more than adequate to handle a Cannons game day crowd.
Return on Investment 2
Tickets for Cannons games range in price from $23-$33, which means that the least expensive ticket here in Foxborough is roughly equal in price to the most expensive ticket at the Cannons’ previous home in Boston. Purchasing tickets on the day of the game will increase the price by two or three dollars. The Cannons offer group discounts of up to five dollars per ticket. All seats are located between sections 104 and 115, and provide excellent views of the action.
Offsetting the higher ticket prices is the free parking directly adjacent to the stadium. If coming to a Cannons game remember that this is an NFL facility, so be prepared to pay major league prices for food and souvenirs here. Experienced visitors to Gillette Stadium will save some money by taking advantage of the tailgating scene before all Cannons games.

Extra points are awarded for the pregame festivities at Gillette Stadium. The Cannons tried to bring many of their popular traditions with them to Foxborough, and many work better at this larger venue. Parking lots open three hours before opening faceoff to allow tailgaters to set up, and with all the fans clustered in a couple of parking lots, the smells and sounds are fantastic. Final Thoughts
Gillette Stadium is a fantastic venue for watching lacrosse. The venue hosted the NCAA Lacrosse finals in 2008, 2009, and 2012. While the Cannons offer a scaled-back version of that experience, sightlines are great here and New England fans know their lacrosse. The presence of so many youth teams provide a great atmosphere to take in one of the fastest growing sports in the country.
Gillette Stadium may only be home to the Cannons for the 2015 season, but it provides an easily accessible location for suburban fans to catch the team. Hopefully the team can capitalize on this exposure as they decide on a home for the coming years.

A cannon was fired in honor of Chinakhov

However, this requires a different power system that distributes ammunition between several fixed barrels.
One of the possible variants of this system was proposed in US patent US3741069A “Feed System for a Non-Rotating Multy-Barrel Gun” , issued on June 26, 1973 to two inventors. One of them is a certain Paul E. Stewart, but the other is none other than himself Dale M. Davis. He is the author of the most interesting work on small-caliber ammunition for aircraft guns “Historical Development Summary of Automatic Cannon Caliber Ammunition: 20 to 30 Millimeter” , and, as it says, from October 1952 to February 1984 was involved in one way or another in all the development of automatic cannons and ammunition for them, which were carried out in the interests of the US Air Force.He has also advised the US Army, DARPA, US Department of Defense and NATO. The power supply system from the patent contains a “squirrel cage” – a rotary feeder rotating around the weapon. A similar detail was used in the Soviet ShKAS aircraft machine gun and the ShVAK aircraft gun derived from it. This “squirrel cage” from the patent rotates twice as fast as the casing with a groove for the gate rollers and exchanges cartridges and spent cartridges with the conveyor, that is, the feed system is linkless, with cartridges returning to the conveyor.With the cannon, the “squirrel cage” exchanges cartridges and casings with the help of three planetary stars, which rotate around their axes and simultaneously around the cannon. As stated in the patent, a working model of this device was built, demonstrating its functionality, and the rights to it belong to the US Air Force.
It is also noteworthy that the patent mentions another patent – US563701 from 1896, and the name Wilder. A story about them is ahead.
Another version of the “reverse gatling” power system can be obtained from the linkless system used in hanging containers with GAU-13 and GAU-22 cannons.
Here, a closed reusable belt – conveyor – is coiled between guides around the gun. If the block of barrels is made stationary, and the guide is made together with the groove for the driving rollers of the shutters and made to rotate with the conveyor around the gun, the latter will be reloaded.
Finally, the third option is to make its own ammunition streams for each barrel or for pairs of adjacent barrels. That is, each barrel or pair of barrels has its own magazine, its own belt or conveyor, its own magazine receiver, tape drive mechanism or a mechanism that feeds cartridges from the conveyor and returns the sleeves to it.This is no more complicated and cumbersome than in multi-gun installations, where each is fed from its own store or its own tape. Or than selective feeding systems, when there are two belts or conveyors per gun.
However, turning the weapon of the Gatling system inside out can also occur in another way: the groove for the driving rollers of the shutters is not located around them, but between them. This can reduce the wear on the driving lugs and groove, since the lugs need to travel a shorter distance in one revolution than if they and the groove were outside.Another advantage is that the function of moving the bolts is removed from the weapon casing, and the casing can be made quick-detachable or with large hatches, which facilitates maintenance and repair. Or even most of the casing may be absent altogether, to reduce the weight of the weapon, the body of the carrier protects from getting dirt and foreign objects into the mechanism – this idea was put forward by the famous Eugene Stoner, one of the fathers of the iconic M-16 machine gun, in patent US4269109A “Open-Framework Receiver Automatic Cannon “issued May 26, 1981.However, in metal such a gun was implemented in the USSR, this is the famous GSH-301, in which most of the receiver (“receiver”) is missing, instead it is rather a frame in which the bolt moves and on which the tape drive mechanism is installed.
One design with a groove for driving rollers between the gates is described in US Patent US4259891A “Multi-Barrel Rotary Machine Gun” , issued April 7, 1981 to two Israeli inventors.
The developers wanted to make the machine gun with a rotating barrel block more accurate and simpler than the M134 “Minigun” and the like. To do this, they introduced a fixed and rigid inner pipe into the structure, around which the movable parts rotated, and on which a groove was formed for the leading protrusions of the gates. According to the developers, this design provides less dispersion than modern gatlings, in which the rotating part is hung on two large bearings inside the casing.However, if you do it as in the picture, then the angle of inclination of the groove will be more than 45 degrees, and it will interfere with rotation. To make it smaller, you need to approximately double the diameter of the block, keeping the number of trunks the same or increasing it from 6 to 10-12.
And this patent also mentions the patent US563701 from 1896 together with the surname Wilder. A story about them is ahead.
Another option was not only proposed, but also tested in the early seventies of the last century in the United States. It was a GAU-8 / A cannon, but not a General Electric “Avenger” from the Fairchild Republic A-10 “Thunderbolt II” attack aircraft, but a six-barreled cannon from the Philco-Ford Corporation that lost the competition.Externally similar to “Avenger”, inside it was very different.
The barrels of this gun were smooth, and from the breech they could fit a 10 “(25 centimeters) long threaded insert. She shot 30×165 cartridges (not Soviet) with shells with plastic leading belts. A cylinder was located between the gates, rotating faster than the rotor and synchronously with it. On this cylinder, a groove of complex shape was made, resembling a pigtail. It included the leading protrusions of the gates. Thanks to the unusual shape of the groove, it was possible to maintain the diameter usual for a six-barreled gun and bypass the requirement for a slope of the groove of no more than 45 degrees.Moreover, when the shooter released the trigger, all the bolts were fixed in the rearmost position, excluding the sending of cartridges into the barrels, and then the block of barrels was scrolled in the opposite direction, so that all unfired cartridges turned out to be outside the gun, in the ready-to-feed position, and the barrels remained open from both sides for better cooling. Thus, in this gun were combined the methods of cleaning from cartridges, applied separately on the M61A1 “Vulcan” and GAU-8 / A “Avenger”. And she herself was, as it were, turned inside out in comparison with the usual gatling.Its linkless power system was also turned inside out. Externally similar to those of General Electric guns, inside it was arranged like multilayer disk magazines of machine guns of the Second World War, for example, DT-29. If in the shops of General Electric guns the internal auger rotated, and the cartridges moved only longitudinally along the guides on the walls, then in the Philco-Ford magazine the cartridges in the magazine were rotated by a feeder that forced them to move along spiral guides on the walls.The advantage was in a shorter and simpler magazine, and the disadvantage was that it was necessary to rotate an array of more than a thousand cartridges with a total mass of more than six centners.
Most likely, the designers of “Philco-Ford” were forced to go to such a turn inside out in order to bypass the patents of “General Electric”.
Since the groove along which the leading lugs of the shutters moved was between them, the cannon casing was freed from the function of moving the shutters. It was made of two halves that were easily removable, providing easy access to the mechanisms of the gun.
During the tests, it turned out that the gun could not shoot a full ammunition load, after about six hundred shots, the rifled inserts in the smooth barrels were destroyed. As a result, the six-barreled sample from Philco-Ford lost to the seven-barreled sample from General Electric. Only three prototypes were built.
Another improvement that can be made is to feed cartridges from both sides at the same time, and make the slot for the bolts so that it has twice as many areas for reloading, firing and moving the bolts.Then each barrel will shoot twice in one revolution of the barrel block, and at a given speed it will be possible to double the rate of fire, or at a given rate of fire, reduce the block rotation speed by half, reducing wear, dispersion and the time to reach the maximum rate. Also, each of the power systems will have only half the load – the belt or conveyor can move twice as slow. If the number of barrels in the block is even, then the shooting will occur in volleys of two, but if the number of barrels is odd, then the shots will occur in turn, on one and the other side of the circle.At the same time, to accommodate a double number of groove sections on the casing, it will be necessary to approximately double the diameter of the weapon – from what happens in models with 5-6 barrels to one that corresponds to 10-12 barrels.
It looks like the Chinese have adopted this cannon design in their new Type 1130 shipborne ZAK, which they are installing on their aircraft carriers.
A thick block of 11 barrels and two magazines on both sides of the gun are visible. It is reported that the rate of fire reaches 10,000 rounds per minute.A typical 11-barrel gatling would need 909 rpm, while a double-sided one would need 455 rpm.
It turns out that the listed improvements were almost fully embodied in metal in the second half of the 19th century. This little-known machine gun is described in the first volume of G.M. Chinn’s excellent five-volume “The Machine Gun”, in Chapter 11 “Wilder Machine Gun”, on pages 100-103. Its author was the American Elihu Wilder, who lived in Manchester, in the state of New Hampshire, in the northeastern United States.The original design patent, US182729A “Improvement in Machine-Guns”, was granted on September 26, 1876. The inventor’s plans to establish the production and sale of his brainchild were prevented by his death – he died shortly after he produced the first prototype. The patent for an improved version, US563701 “Machine Gun”, was granted as early as July 7, 1896. It was drawn up by Lauretta Wilder, a widow, and the patent says that she assigns the rights to the patent to a certain H.O.Moses, and that the case is in Massachusetts, also in the northeastern United States. Chinn writes in his book that this Moses was from a Boston concern that no doubt intended to make weapons. Boston is a large city, the capital of the state of Massachusetts.
Interestingly, the inventor who upgraded the Gatling system after World War II also died shortly after the prototype was created, and the patent was filed by another person, and the design rights passed to the US Army.The inventor’s name was Harold McCall Otto, and he lived and worked in the famous American industrial city of Schenectady, New York, where General Electric was headquartered and where post-war gatlings were developed. The Volcano project started in 1946, the first prototypes appeared before 1950, and in 1952, as follows from an article in the Schenectady Gazette, Schenectady, New York, August 29, 1952, the inventor died in the same Schenectady. Patent US2849921A “Gatling Gun” was obtained on September 2, 1958 by a certain Wesley W.Taber, somehow affiliated with the Schenectady Trust Company, with the transfer of rights to the US Army. At that time, the gun had just received the designation M61 (in December 1957), was demonstrated to the public, went into production (since 1957) and began to be installed on the F-104 and F-105, giving users problems with an unfinished link system nutrition.
And the author of another multi-barreled system, Carl Helge Julius Palmcrantz, died shortly after it was created. His machine gun was adopted in Sweden in 1873, in 1875 he met Torsten Nordenfelt, who set up production in England, and in 1880 Palmkranz died at the age of 38.At the same time, he seemed to be disappointed in the development of machine guns and considered it an evil deed. Undoubtedly, this story was played in the second film of the series “Mysteries of Sally Lockhart” (“The Sally Lokhart Mysteries”) – “The Shadow in the North”. It directly says that the manufacturer of the machine gun killed the inventor when he fell into pacifism and considered his creation evil.

Wilder installed five fixed barrels on his machine gun, placing them in half a circle. Opposite each of them was its own gate. Each barrel had its own power system in the form of a vertical guide, like a long clip, along which cartridges were lowered into the weapon under their own weight – a popular solution at the time, used on weapons by Gatling, Gardner, Farrington and others. Thus, if each such “clip” contained 20 rounds, then there were a hundred of them, ready for immediate use.Chinn, however, writes that 50 rounds could be placed in each guide, then their total stock on the weapon reached 250. The cartridges from the guides first fell into rotary feeders – each of the five barrels – which set the cartridges exactly opposite the corresponding barrel and shutter, which increased the reliability of the weapon.
The characteristics of the weapon were very high. The five-barreled sample chambered for .45-70 Government, as claimed by the American General Charles Benjamin Norton at the Paris Exhibition of 1882, fired 200 shots in 6 seconds, which corresponds to the rate of 2000 rpm.For comparison, a ten-barreled gatling model of 1883 chambered for the same cartridge on tests in Turin in 1883 fired one hundred rounds in 3.25 seconds, which corresponds to 1800 rpm. There was a three-barreled version, adapted for transportation on the back of a horse. Its mass is 70 pounds (32 kg), rate of fire is 1000 w / m. Finally, before his death, the inventor was working on a 37-mm version of his weapon chambered for the Hotchkiss revolver cannon, which fired only one shot for each turn of the handle. The rate of fire of this gun, according to calculations, would be four times higher than the rate of fire of the Hotchkiss gun, that is, it would reach 240-320 v / m, which corresponds to the “Pom-Pom” H.Maxim. Wilder also suggested the installation of a water cooling jacket and a device for dispersing shots. As Chinn writes, if the weapon went into production and sale, it would seriously compete with Gatling’s weapons and, in general, all the then grapeshot. It is easy to see that Wilder’s machine gun contains the improvements described above. If you put it on its side, so that the guides for the cartridges stand horizontally, and add five more barrels and guides on the other side, you get a double-sided ten-barreled gatling turned inside out twice, making 4000 rpm.Rotary cartridge feeders are essentially the basis for rotary tape drives. They could be combined with drums like revolving guns, not so much to increase the rate of fire, but to halve the travel of the moving parts (less wear and energy consumption) and to separate the chamber from the hottest parts of the barrels, which will increase resistance to overheating. The sleeves can be thrown down into the gap between the two halves of the barrel block. Well, then – put a motor or gas outlet to rotate the drum.
A weapon similar to the Wilder machine gun was also proposed by the American James Patton Taylor from Tennessee. His machine gun had nine fixed barrels arranged in a semicircle, the bolts were driven by a drum with a groove between the bolts. The second groove on the drum cocked and released the strikers, while Wilder had a separate piece for this purpose behind the drum that rotated with him. However, Taylor made two mistakes. The groove on its drum was made so that each barrel fired only once per drum revolution.And the cartridges were fed from a pack in the form of a crescent with nine rows of nests. This last one ruined the idea: after testing in 1878, the military commented on the weapon as wonderful and promising, but unsuitable for use with the existing supply system, which must certainly be reworked.
