What are the highest-rated episodes of Face Off. Which Face Off challenges pushed contestants to their creative limits. How did the show’s most memorable makeups come to life. Discover the top-ranked episodes that showcase extraordinary special effects artistry.
The Tim Burton Challenge: Reimagining Ordinary Occupations
One of the most highly-rated episodes of Face Off comes from Season 2, where contestants were tasked with creating a new character from an ordinary occupation for a Tim Burton film. This challenge, which aired on February 29, 2012, earned an impressive 8.29 rating from fans.
Why was this challenge so captivating? The combination of everyday professions and Tim Burton’s signature gothic whimsy provided a perfect canvas for the artists to showcase their creativity. Contestants had to strike a delicate balance between the mundane and the fantastical, resulting in truly unique character designs.
Key Elements of the Tim Burton Challenge:
- Transforming ordinary jobs into extraordinary characters
- Capturing Tim Burton’s distinctive aesthetic
- Balancing realism with fantasy
- Showcasing both makeup and prosthetic skills
This episode exemplifies why Face Off became such a beloved show among special effects enthusiasts and casual viewers alike. It challenged artists to think outside the box while still working within recognizable parameters, resulting in makeups that were both familiar and utterly unique.
Knights and Crowns: The Season 7 Finale Showdown
The Season 7 finale, which aired on October 28, 2014, stands out as another fan favorite with an 8.15 rating. This episode concluded the season’s theme of “life and death” by immersing contestants in the fantastical world of knights.
How did this challenge push contestants to their limits? Creating knight characters required a multi-faceted approach, combining historical accuracy with fantasy elements. Artists needed to consider armor design, period-appropriate features, and ways to incorporate the season’s overarching theme.
Highlights of the Knight Challenge:
- Merging historical references with fantasy concepts
- Incorporating armor and weaponry into makeup designs
- Balancing the “life and death” theme with knightly qualities
- Creating characters that could feasibly exist in a cohesive world
This finale showcased the growth of the artists throughout the season, allowing them to demonstrate their accumulated skills in a challenge that demanded both technical proficiency and creative vision.
Lights, Camera, Action: The Choreographed Dance Finale
Season 2’s finale, airing on March 14, 2012, raised the stakes by requiring finalists to create three original characters from specific movie genres. These characters then had to perform in a choreographed dance routine at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, CA. This ambitious challenge earned an 8.11 rating from viewers.
What made this finale stand out from others? The incorporation of live performance added an entirely new dimension to the makeup challenge. Artists had to consider not only the aesthetic appeal of their creations but also their functionality in motion.
Unique Aspects of the Dance Finale:
- Creating characters suited for specific film genres
- Designing makeups that could withstand vigorous movement
- Considering the visual impact of the characters in a theatrical setting
- Collaborating with dancers to bring the characters to life
This episode demonstrated the versatility required of professional makeup artists, who often need to create looks that can hold up under the demanding conditions of film and stage performances.
Kung Fu Animals: A Fighting Finale
The Season 11 finale, which aired on April 25, 2017, challenged the final three contestants to create animalistic kung fu masters for an actual fight scene. This action-packed conclusion earned an 8.0 rating from fans.
Why did this challenge resonate with viewers? It combined the fantasy elements of anthropomorphic animals with the practical considerations of action choreography. Artists had to create makeups that were visually striking while allowing for the physical demands of martial arts performances.
Key Considerations for Kung Fu Animal Makeups:
- Blending animal features with human anatomy
- Ensuring flexibility and durability for fight scenes
- Capturing the essence of different martial arts styles
- Creating characters that could convincingly interact in combat
This finale showcased the evolution of Face Off challenges, incorporating more complex performance elements while still focusing on the core skills of special effects makeup artistry.
Cinematic Visions: Collaborating with Directors
The conclusion of Season 9, airing on October 27, 2015, took an innovative approach by having finalists work with director and creature designer Patrick Tatopoulos to create characters for short films. This cinematic challenge garnered an 8.0 rating from audiences.
How did this challenge differ from previous finales? By collaborating directly with a renowned director, contestants gained insight into the practical demands of creating characters for film. They had to balance their artistic visions with the narrative and technical requirements of a short film production.
Collaborative Aspects of the Film Challenge:
- Working within a director’s creative vision
- Adapting designs to suit a specific story and setting
- Considering how makeup translates on camera
- Creating characters that can carry a narrative
This episode highlighted the collaborative nature of film production and the importance of makeup artists being able to work effectively as part of a larger creative team.
Mutant Families: The Power of Teamwork
A standout episode from Season 11, airing on March 21, 2017, saw the remaining artists form two super teams to create families of deranged, murderous mutants. This group challenge received a 7.97 rating from viewers.
Why was this team challenge particularly engaging? It required artists to work together to create a cohesive family of characters, each with unique traits but sharing a common aesthetic. This challenged not only their individual skills but also their ability to collaborate and compromise.
Elements of Successful Mutant Family Creation:
- Developing a unified concept for the family
- Creating distinct characters that still relate to each other
- Balancing horror elements with character personality
- Coordinating makeup techniques across multiple artists
This episode showcased the importance of teamwork in the special effects industry, where large-scale projects often require multiple artists to work in harmony to achieve a cohesive vision.
Dinosaur Hybrids: Prehistoric Meets Present
Another highly-rated episode from Season 2, airing on March 7, 2012, challenged the five remaining contestants to create human-dinosaur hybrids in a double-elimination event. This prehistoric challenge earned a 7.93 rating from fans.
What made the dinosaur hybrid challenge so compelling? It required artists to blend two vastly different forms of life in a believable and visually striking way. The challenge tested their knowledge of anatomy, their sculpting skills, and their ability to balance realism with fantasy.
Crucial Aspects of Dinosaur Hybrid Design:
- Seamlessly integrating human and dinosaur features
- Choosing appropriate dinosaur species for hybridization
- Creating textures that suggest both scales and skin
- Developing a backstory to explain the hybrid’s existence
This episode demonstrated the show’s ability to push contestants beyond traditional makeup concepts, encouraging them to draw inspiration from palaeontology and speculative evolution.
Face Off consistently challenged its contestants to push the boundaries of special effects makeup, resulting in truly memorable episodes that showcased the artistry and ingenuity of the field. From reimagining ordinary professions through the lens of Tim Burton to creating prehistoric hybrids, these top-rated episodes represent the pinnacle of creativity and skill in the world of special effects makeup.

Waiting for the Season: Top 10 Faceoff Specialists
NHL. com continues its August “Waiting for the Season” feature, featuring the top 10 players by various criteria. Today we are talking about the top face-off specialists who will set the tone for the 2021-22 season.
Sidney Crosby, when he first came to the NHL, wasn’t very good at faceoffs. But after several years of hard work, he turned into one of the best specialists in this aspect. Needless to say, successful faceoff play most often comes with experience? That is why it is difficult to include in the top ten, for example, 22-year-old New Jersey center forward Niko Hishira. Although he showed last year 56% of martial arts won on the point, he probably will not soon gain the stability of his more experienced colleagues.
In our ranking, we took into account the percentage of face-offs won and their total number in the 2020-21 season, looked at the player’s history in the past, and also tried to assess his prospects in the 2021-22 championship, which our rating is focused on. Leaving a few candidates out of the top 10 was so difficult that we couldn’t do without the “Worthy of Mention” column.
So…
[See also: Waiting for the season: top 10 underrated players]
Veteran’s past season Boston” turned out to be the best in his career. By the way, on April 5, it was he who set the championship record by winning 23 face-offs in a game against Philadelphia (2:3 O). The Bruins have been the best overall this season (55.3%), and in order to maintain their position after the departure of David Krejci (54.2%), Bergeron will probably even have to get to the point more often.
2. Ryan O’Reilly, St. Louis forward, 30 (58.8% of 1,196)
O’Reilly hasn’t dropped below 57% in six years and has no intention of losing ground. In these six years, he is the only one in the NHL who has crossed the threshold of 10,000 face-offs in which he took part (10389).
3. Claude Giroud, Philadelphia forward, 33 (59. 6% of 812)
Giroud holds the lead among current NHL players in faceoff winning percentage (at least 200) over the past four years (58.7 %). Could qualify for a place higher on our list, but often crosses paths on the ice with Sean Couturier, another big specialist in actions on the spot.
4. Jordan Staal, Carolina forward, 32 years (58% of 1083)
A lost faceoff usually means a 25-30 second loss to re-enter the zone when defensemen drop the puck. Staal saves that time for the Carolinas: Last season, he led the NHL in power play percentage won among those with 100+ spot shots (69.3%). And in the playoffs in efficiency, the Hurricanes captain lost only to Casey Cizicas of the Islanders (58.4% vs. 61.2%, at least 200 duels).
5. Luke Glendening, Dallas forward, age 32 (60.9% of 859) skills – to win face-offs. The leader (!) of last season in the NHL in terms of the number of throw-ins in his zone, in which he took part, is 490. And this despite the fact that Glendening played only 14:48 per game.
6. Sean Couturier, Philly forward, 28 (56.9% of 750)
Couturier went through the traditional career of a center forward, starting at the age of 18 in the NHL. For the first five years he never broke the 50% face-off win rate, the next five years he never dropped below 53%, peaking in 2019-20 (59.6%), which he crowned the Selkie Trophy. In the last championship there was a slight retreat in efficiency, but it is most likely temporary. The couturier is at the peak of his career and has the full confidence of the coaches.
7. Sidney Crosby, winger, Pittsburgh, 33 (53.6% of 1262)
Two interesting facts about Crosby: last season he was the best in the number of face-offs in the attacking zone (574) and in the number of starting face-offs (53 in 55 games played). In both nominations, he won by a huge margin – in the first case over Bergeron (499), in the second – over Joel Eriksson-Ek of Minnesota (41). Few of the mentors will refuse the opportunity to release Baby Sid on the point, if any. Mike Sullivan is definitely not one of them.
8. Tyler Seguin, Dallas forward, 29 (54.3% of 35)
In 2019-20, Seguin ranked fifth in the NHL in faceoff winning percentage (58.2%) and came close to that age when should linger on this plateau. Missing the 2020-21 season due to injury will be a good additional motivation.
9. Bo Horvath, Vancouver forward, 26 years old (52.9% of 1225) list and continues to progress. Vancouver’s other leading center, Elias Pettersson, hasn’t been much of an assistant on the spot yet (45%), JT Miller (53%) has fallen a bit after an outstanding 2019 season.-20, and Jay Beagle (56.2%) sent to Arizona, so Horvath will have plenty of opportunities to hone his talent.
10. Anze Kopitar, Los Angeles forward, 33 (57.3% of 1154)
Kopitar, like fine wine, only gets better with age. At least when it comes to throw-ins. Last season, he set a personal record for the percentage of single combats won at the point, playing at 21:11 per match. He could have been higher in the top ten, but the arrival of Phillip Dano (52.5%) should take some of the burden off him.
Worthy of Mention
Jonathan Toews, winger, Chicago, 33 years old (did not play)
Would have made it into the top 3 if it was guaranteed he would play next season. Taves’ career record (56.9%) is second only to Patrice Bergeron when it comes to current hockey players.
Pierre-Edouard Bellemare, Tampa forward, 36 years old (60.8% of 428)
Colorado managed to become the NHL’s best face-off win percentage in the minority – 63.6% (minimum 100 attempts) ). Now he has transferred his talent to Tampa, which again demonstrates high-quality and accurate personnel work.
Jay Beagle, Arizona forward, 35 (56.2% of 308)
Third all current players and 19th all-time in career faceoff winning percentage (56.7%). But he plays a little and his help on the point does not have such an impact on the results of the team as the above-mentioned competitors.
Jason Spezza, forward, Toronto, 38 years (56.9% of 483)
Also spends most of his time in the fourth line of his team, but still holds the brand. Since the 2004-05 lockout, it has never fallen below the 50% mark.
Steven Stamkos, winger, Tampa, 31 (57.2% of 416)
Another top 10 contender, but he’s often beaten off by Braden Point or Anthony Cirelli when they come out at the same time. ice.

Throw-ins are the most important element of hockey. Teams that win when the puck is put into play gain an advantage in offensive development. Theoretically, this can improve the results of the match. Throw-in bets can be found on the betting market. You need to bet on such an element of statistics according to certain rules.
Place a bet on hockey
Rules and essence of the event
Throw-in – putting the puck into play after the match is stopped. A hitch in a duel can take place for various reasons:
- goal;
- violation of the rules;
- puck out of bounds.
Line or center referees bring the puck into play. There are 9 points for throw-in on the court. The choice of location depends on the situation in the match. After the goal, the chief referee of the match will put the projectile into play and resume the fight from the center of the site.
The specified element of the competition is held according to the approved rules. The regulation defines:
- Location of the players. Near the face-off point there may be one athlete from each team. Hockey players stand facing each other and to the opponent’s goal. The remaining participants in the match must be located outside the outer circle of the face-off area.
- Faceoff participants must keep the blade of the stick on the ice.
- The distance between the players is approximately the length of the stick.
- The athletes participating in the face-off are selected by the team. Most often they are line leaders or forwards. In case of violations on the part of the player (manifestation of excessive activity), the referee may remove the hockey player from the point. Another player will take his place.
The rules have more nuances. For example, referees may not put the puck into play until they are sure that outsiders (extra players, medical or maintenance personnel) have left the area.
Who won?
The main misconception around the face-off is determining the winner. Most people who are far from hockey believe that victory in a duel for the puck is awarded to the team whose player first touched the projectile. This is wrong. Throw-in is considered victorious if the team, after putting the puck into play, completely took possession of the projectile. The relevant information is recorded by the referees and entered into the club’s statistics. The first touch will not bring victory.
Which bookies accept bets on won hockey faceoffs?
Bookmakers are trying to provide customers with the most in-depth description. Some offices for hockey events give completely unique outcomes:
- will the glass be broken due to a puck hit;
- whether the coach of one of the teams will be removed;
- whether the goalkeepers will be able to score.
However, companies do not pay much attention to hockey statistics. On many sites of the official BC of the Russian Federation, it was not possible to find offers for betting on a throw-in. You can definitely bet on a throw-in in hockey on the following sites, the lines of which we have checked:
- 1xbet;
- BetCity;
- Bettery;
- Marathon;
- Pin-up.
Companies have a high margin on this type of bet. However, for the appearance of an additional market, betters have to pay out of their own pockets.

What is the best way to bet? Tips and Tricks for Players
Prior to the 2019/2020 hockey season, bettors viewed face-off betting as a sort of lottery. The reason is the KHL regulations. For excessive activity, a raised stick or refusal to take a given position, the arbitrators could remove the athlete from the point and ask another participant to take his place in the meeting.
The “masters” of the draws left the point, the chance of winning in a particular situation fell. This worsened the overall statistics of the team.
Later the regulation was changed. Now the arbitrators can remove the athlete only after 2 violations. First, the judges give a warning. Removed only after the repeated refusal of the player to comply with the rules.
Putting the puck into play due to a change in regulations has become a more predictable event. Betters have learned to evaluate possible outcomes on the ice much better. To increase the probability of a profitable game, it is worth considering two points:
- selection of the mathematical model of bank distribution;
- forecasting.
Only in conjunction will it be possible to achieve the desired result and increase the bankroll.
Mathematical model of bank distribution
There are many schemes for bets. Some are conservative, others are high risk. When playing, it is better to use flat. The scheme will not give you a get-rich-quick scheme. However, it will not work to drain the balance for a couple of bets. The idea is to bet on a fixed percentage. More often, players use 3-5% of the balance or a little less. With the growth of the bank, the absolute value increases, with a drawdown, it decreases. The model is conservative. Don’t expect fast acceleration.
Making a forecast. What to pay attention to?
Now let’s talk about forecasting. Lots of good news for bettors. When setting the odds for a bet on a throw-in, bookmakers are guided by the classic schemes of work. Analysts use:
- Team status (up or down).
- Condition of the main hockey players.
- Game type (importance of the duel, home or away match).
Bet on won hockey faceoffs
No one really works with these betting options. Often because of this, players manage to snatch decent odds. The change in the KHL regulations has led to an increase in the dependence of clubs on specific players. The top teams in the league have at least one hockey player actively used by coaches to play on the spot. Often such athletes go out to play not in their link. After putting the projectile into play, they return to the bench. In Avangard, throw-in specialists can be called Kirill Semenov (49.6% wins on point, 262 face-offs) and Knight Corban (59.5% wins, 674 fights). Moreover, it is clear from the statistics that the hawks’ mentors place emphasis on the legionnaire. The figures above are for the 2020/2021 KHL playoffs.
The user does not need to analyze the performance of the entire team, read news about different players, monitor the situation within the club. It is enough to look only at the dynamics of a couple of athletes and their statistics.
Information about the current situation can be found on the team websites or the KHL portal. In the latter case, you need:
- Go to the league website.
- Select the “Statistics” section.
- Go to the “Personal” subsection.
- Use filters to set the required parameters (role, season, team).
The information of interest to the user is offered in the last 3 columns of the grid. It includes:
- the number of throw-ins;
- number of victories;
- winning percentage.
It is necessary to compare the situation with two teams, to determine the best players in terms of playing on the points. Then you need to find out the shape of the athletes and the risks of non-participation in the match (injuries). Conclusions about the winning club in the game on the point will come by themselves.
