The Erie BayHawks schedule is set for the 2021 NBA G League season that will be played entirely at ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World Resort.  The BayHawks will tip-off their 15-game season on February 10 at 3 PM EST when they play the Salt Lake City Stars in what will be the first of seven games that Erie will be designated the home team.

The season opener will also be the first of six games that fans throughout northwest Pennsylvania can watch a live local broadcast over-the-air on Lilly Broadcasting’s ENN Plus WSEE 35.3, or stream it live on the ENN Plus website or app.  All six local broadcasts will be games in which Erie is designated the home team so will include sights and sounds in the arena similar to games at Erie Insurance Arena, and local broadcasters Chris “Red” Hughes and Alex Womer will be on the call.  Due to early start times, local broadcast games will re-air on ENN Plus at 7:30 PM EST the day of each game, with the exception of the February 28 game against the Greensboro Swarm that will air live at 7 PM EST.

How Cassius Winston and the Wizards will operate in the G-League bubble

In order to get better as a basketball player, it helps to actually play basketball games. But, due to the ongoing restraints amid the coronavirus pandemic, that has not been easy for prospects in the Wizards’ organization.

So, with the G-League holding a shortened season in Orlando on the Disney World campus, the same place the NBA finished its 2019-20 campaign in the late summer and fall, the Wizards joined forces with the Erie Bayhawks, the New Orleans Pelicans affiliate, to flex-assign five players to their roster. They have Cassius Winston, Jordan Bell, Yoeli Childs, Caleb Homesley and Marlon Taylor down in Orlando, ready to begin a 15-game regular season schedule with Erie that starts on Wednesday against the Salt Lake City Stars.

In addition to the five players representing them in the bubble, the Wizards have also sent the newly-hired Capital City Go-Go general manager Amber Nichols, as well as assistant coach Mike Williams, who will serve on the Bayhawks staff and be their head coach for two games. They are in regular communication with Wizards GM Tommy Sheppard, outlining a player development plan for their players, which is then implemented in concert with Bayhawks head coach Ryan Pannone.

That means deferring to the Bayhawks when it comes to their playbook and system, but simply getting game experience for their players is the overarching goal.

“It’s a great opportunity to come out here and just play,” Winston told NBC Sports Washington. “That’s what we do. That’s what we get paid for. I have the opportunity to play and showcase what I can do.”

“There’s some situational stuff that we can’t recreate in practice that is going to happen in the game. It’s going to be a good experience for those guys,” Nichols said.

Winston, a 2020 second-round pick, has had a leg up on some of his Go-Go/Bayhawks teammates in that he’s been with the Wizards, practicing and occasionally appearing in games. He has played 44 minutes in the NBA so far across six games, usually late in blowouts. Most of his work has been done in individual drills with Williams and Wizards assistant Kamran Sufi, with an emphasis on ball-handling and conditioning.

Now, Winston gets to take all that work into what should be extended game action.

“Get us under control and be a leader,” Nichols said of what she expects from Winston. “Those are things I think he’s going to be capable of doing, especially at our level. Just seeing his ability to score and create for others with some of the defensive coverages that teams are going to be able to throw at him is going to be really interesting to see.”

Winston was not able to practice with the Bayhawks until Tuesday, the day before the first game. It was a challenge getting all the players together and in shape before the schedule began, due to the pandemic and the restrictions enacted by the league.

Nichols, however, believes Winston will be able to adapt faster than the average player.

“We were in a film session two days ago. He’s really smart. He picks up things very, very quickly,” she said. “There’s no doubt he’s ready to play just because of how he processes information on the fly.”

Getting some of the other players up to speed first involved remote ball-handling workouts on Zoom led by Williams. Then, there was a quick trip to Clearwater, FL, before they arrived in Orlando to enter the bubble. That was so they could hold beach workouts, which were permitted by the league. Those were led by former Washington Capitals trainer Greg Smith. The Go-Go players then had to quarantine for four days before beginning training camp with Erie, which featured scrimmages against the Timberwolves and Raptors affiliates.

After all of that, it’s time to get to work. In a span of 24 days, they will play 15 different teams in their 15 games, including G-League Ignite, which features a host of likely 2021 first-round draft picks like Jonathan Kuminga, Jalen Green and Daishen Nix.

“It’s a good opportunity to just lock in and focus on one thing and one thing only. To try to get better and handle my business,” Winston said.

Noah Richard selected by the Bayhawks in MLL Draft

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina – Noah Richard of the Marquette University men’s lacrosse team was selected by the Chesapeake Bayhawks in the third round of the 2019 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft on Saturday evening at the NASCAR Hall of Fame.

Richard was taken with the 25th overall selection, making him the second-highest drafted Golden Eagle in program history. Only Liam Byrnes, who was also selected in the third round in 2016 at 21st overall by the Florida Launch, was drafted higher.

The West Chester, Pennsylvania native has established himself as one of the premier long-stick midfielders in NCAA Division I and was the BIG EAST Conference’s unanimous choice at the position on its 2018 all-league first team and 2019 preseason team.

Richard, a recently announced Senior CLASS Award candidate, is one of only four players in Marquette history with at least 100 ground balls and 30 caused turnovers in his career. This season, the senior leads MU with 20 ground balls, has forced seven turnovers and posted five points, while also filling in occasionally at the faceoff dot.

He joins former teammates Byrnes, Ryan McNamara, Conor Gately, Zachary Melillo and Cole Blazer on MLL rosters. Blazer was also selected by the Bayhawks in last fall’s MLL Supplemental Draft.

Richard’s brother, Jacob, who is now a MU assistant coach, was selected in the fourth round (35th overall) of the 2016 MLL Draft by the New York Lizards. He will play for Atlas LC in the Premier Lacrosse League’s inaugural season in 2019.

Monaghan Named to Erie BayHawks Training Camp Roster – Minnesota State University

ERIE, Pa. — Former Minnesota State men’s basketball guard Zach Monaghan has been named to the training camp roster of the Erie BayHawks, the NBA G League affiliate of the New Orleans Pelicans.

“I’m really thankful for the opportunity to compete for a spot with the BayHawks,” Monaghan said. “I’ve been working extremely hard this offseason to try and prepare myself for this opportunity. Being able to be a lot closer to family and friends is something I am looking forward to.”

“Goal number one is obviously to make the team,” Monaghan added. “Coach Panonne has given me a great chance to come in every day and work really hard at trying to earn a spot on the roster.”

“I am extremely proud of what Zach has done professionally since he has left Minnesota State,” head coach Matt Margenthaler said. “He’s continued to make himself better and this is another great opportunity for him.”

A native of Palatine, Ill., Monaghan played three seasons (2012-15) with Minnesota State where he averaged 14.3 points and 7.3 assists per game. During the 2013-14 season, Monaghan was named the NSIC Player of the Year as he set a school record with 282 assists, en route to claiming Daktronics All-American Second honors.

“My time at MSU were some of the best years of my life,” Monaghan said. “Everybody from coach Margenthaler, coach Schott, coach Pat, coach Garvin and every teammate I had there made a great impact on who I am today. I still talk regularly with a bunch of guys from those days and we love talking about our days in Mankato.”

Monaghan ranks second all-time in assists at MSU with 726 and 13th in points with 1,427.

Following his senior season with the Mavericks, Monaghan joined the Coruna basketball team out of Spain where he played four seasons. During the 2018-19 season, Monaghan played in 23 games where he averaged 7.6 points and 4.3 assists per game.

“My time in Spain was a great experience,” Monaghan said. Going over there I didn’t know what to expect or how I would adjust, but after being able to live in and experience a new culture really opened up my viewpoint about a lot of things. I am grateful for everything my family in Coruna provided me with, making it such and easy transition. “

As Bayhawks camp opens, Dave Cottle finds himself a head coach once again

Truth be told, life didn’t change all that much for Dave Cottle in the two years after his last game as Maryland’s men’s lacrosse coach. It just became somewhat inverted.

With his schedule suddenly open, sure, he finally got to see his son, Sean, play more of the sport he coached for nine seasons in College Park and another 19 at Loyola. And, yes, he can speak from experience these days when he jokes about knowing what it’s like to go in for a Saturday morning oil change. (“I’ve never done that, that whole weekend thing,” he said.)

Inevitably, Cottle found his way back to the high schools he made second homes of during college recruiting trips. Only now, it’s to watch the ninth-graders he coaches. He still scrutinizes lacrosse games with the eye of a man who won almost 300 games in his career. Only now, when an old colleague asks for another perspective after a win or loss, he has a preamble: “Do you want to know what I thought? Or do you want me to tell you what you want to hear?”

Even as his exit from Maryland in May 2010 seemed to signal the beginning of the end of his storied coaching career, Cottle and lacrosse could never divorce themselves. So as he prepares for the start of another training camp Friday, this time as the head coach of the Chesapeake Bayhawks, it’s both a surprise and not one at all he’ll soon be blowing a whistle leading his own team once more.

“The successes you share, the relationships you develop – anybody who’s been in that locker room or anybody who’s been between the lines and accomplished something that was outstanding, it’s a tremendous thrill,” Cottle said. “I didn’t want to lose that part of it.”

Not that he ever really did. When he resigned from his Terps post after a fourth straight season ended short of championship weekend, it wasn’t even a month before he joined the Bayhawks as a consultant. It wasn’t much longer before Chesapeake ended a five-game losing streak, then won a Major League Lacrosse championship.

His supercharged ascension began from there. Cottle was named the Bayhawks’ president in January 2011, a Bayhawks assistant coach three months later and head coach on Jan. 5 when owner Brendan Kelly stepped down and asked him to be his replacement.

“He’s my boss,” Cottle said, laughing. “If he asks me to do something, that’s what I’m going to do.”

Cottle can still get wistful over his days spent at Byrd Stadium. He misses the group of players he left behind there. Having moved from coaching up college players to helping out his son’s team to now leading a professional squad filled with some of his former pupils, however, it’s not like he ever really stepped away.

“I missed the guys at Maryland. They were great kids,” Cottle said. “The next thing I know, I’m coaching an eighth-grade team, a ninth-grade team, and now I’m coaching a pro team. I’m coaching all around.”
