Los Angeles: the name conjures the image of huge studio lots, hillsides dotted with chaparral, and the endless blue of both the sky and its thousands of swimming pools. It’s also famous for something else: traffic. L.A. is so huge that it’s tough to see much by car unless you have days to spend sightseeing—and infinite patience for sitting in gridlock on the 405. As you know, the first X Games were held in America back in 1995. Only 15 years later, the main extreme games of the planet came to Europe, settling in French Tignes in their winter version.
This small resort, located at an altitude of 2100 meters above sea level and part of the Espace Killy ski area, is actively claiming the title of the most sporty ski resort in France. Therefore, getting the right to host the X Games was of fundamental importance for Tigne – the director of the resort, Sebastian Merinarg, did not spare any money or effort for this. As a result, today Tignes is the recognized homeland of Winter X Games Europe. This year, Sean White himself, not only a great extreme sportsman, but also an Olympic champion, finally reached Savoy, thus confirming the high status of the “Tignes contest”.
Before coming to French Savoy, the world’s best thrill-seekers found out the relationship in the American Aspen, where they played 18 sets of awards. In Tina, the program turned out to be more modest: only eight sets for men and women in two disciplines – superpipe and slopestyle, separately for snowboarders and skiers. But the X Games record can certainly be called the 100,000 fans who visited Tignes from March 14 to 16 to watch the battles of the future Olympic champions with their own eyes.
Slopestyle / Snowboard
The fact is that the International Olympic Committee finally realized the mass nature and popularity of the competition and included slopestyle in the program of the Olympic Games in Sochi. So the freeriders who have conquered the X Games more than once have a new dream.
If you haven’t seen slopestyle with your own eyes, don’t waste your time looking for videos on the web. This is a fantastic sight: the competitors overcome the track (in Tignes its length is 600 m), performing acrobatic stunts using artificial obstacles: jumps, pyramids, counter slope and railings. To prepare the track, the resort staff had to process 115 thousand square meters of snow, which is approximately equal to its meter layer covering the area of 16 football fields.
The big favorite among snowboarders was the legendary Shaun White, who made his first appearance at Tignes. The two-time Olympic champion in the halfpipe easily won all the races, getting an unattainable 95 points in the first attempt and strengthening the lead in the second.
In the women’s part of the competition, the leader status was confirmed by Jamie Anderson, who has never lost this year. Her total points exceeded White’s result, which once again proves the strength of the weaker sex.

Slopestyle / Skiing
American Bobby Brown dominated the men’s ski slopestyle, winning both attempts. “In training, I only managed to do the Rodeo 450 trick once, but I still took the risk of leaving it in my program. Glad it worked out,” said the lucky winner. The women’s final did not open any new names: Canada’s Kaia Tursky celebrated the victory in Tignes for the third time in a row.

Superpipe / Snowboard
Equally interesting were the superpipe competitions, in which Shaun White also took part, confirming the status of invincible.
Multiple X Games champion (including summer ones) in snowboarding showed an almost perfect result – 98 points. But two months earlier, White became the first athlete who managed to conquer the 100-point bar. Last year’s winner Louis Vito came in second, and third place went to Yury Podladchikov, familiar to many Russians, representing Switzerland. A native of Podolsk near Moscow, in the struggle for victory, risked performing a new difficult trick, but could not land.
In the women’s part of the competition, the entire podium was occupied by the Americans, and the winner Kelly Clark set a personal record along the way, ahead of the second prize-winner by 10 points.
