How did the University of Evansville become known as the Purple Aces. What is the history behind their mascot, Ace Purple. How has the mascot evolved over time. What significance does the asexuality flag hold in relation to the university’s colors.
The Origin of the “Purple Aces” Nickname
The University of Evansville’s journey to becoming the “Purple Aces” is a fascinating tale that dates back to the mid-1920s. This unique nickname has its roots in a memorable basketball game and a clever turn of phrase that captured the imagination of the university community.
During the 1924-25 basketball season, Evansville College (as it was known then) faced off against the University of Louisville. In a surprising turn of events, Evansville emerged victorious with a decisive 59-39 win. It was in the aftermath of this game that the seeds of the “Aces” nickname were sown.
Impressed by Evansville’s performance, the Louisville coach made a remark to Evansville’s coach John Harmon that would change the course of the university’s identity. He said, “You didn’t have four Aces up your sleeve, you had five!” This clever play on words, comparing the team’s exceptional players to a winning hand in poker, struck a chord with Coach Harmon.
Harmon shared this quote with Dan Scism, the sports editor of the Evansville Courier. Both men found themselves drawn to the sound and implications of “Aces” as a potential nickname for the team. At the time, Evansville College was known as the “Pioneers,” but the allure of “Aces” was hard to resist.
Interestingly, Scism had an additional motivation for promoting the use of “Aces.” As a newspaper editor, he appreciated the practicality of the shorter name, which fit more easily into headlines compared to the longer “Pioneers.”
The university’s colors were already established as purple and white. By 1926, the combination of these elements led to the official adoption of “Purple Aces” as the new nickname. This unique moniker quickly gained popularity and has since become recognized across the country as synonymous with the University of Evansville’s athletic programs.
The Birth and Evolution of Ace Purple
While the “Purple Aces” nickname was established in the 1920s, the mascot known as Ace Purple didn’t come into existence until much later. The journey of Ace Purple’s creation and development is a story of creativity, controversy, and community involvement.
The Original Ace Purple
It wasn’t until the late 1960s that Ace Purple took on a physical form. The credit for the original design goes to Larry Hill, a local sports cartoonist. Hill’s vision for Ace Purple was inspired by the university’s location on the banks of the Ohio River. He created a character in the image of a turn-of-the-century riverboat gambler, a figure that embodied both the “Ace” in the team’s name and the region’s riverboat heritage.
However, Hill’s initial design was not without controversy. The original Ace Purple was depicted as a rather intimidating character. He brandished a club with a spike through one end, carried a gun, and wore a menacing sneer. These aggressive elements made Ace Purple a less than likable mascot, and the university administration was not pleased with this representation.
As a result of these concerns, the original incarnation of Ace Purple as a mascot was short-lived. The character soon vanished from official use, although the team continued to be known as the Purple Aces.
Ace Purple’s Revival
The story of Ace Purple took a new turn in 1977 when the University of Evansville moved to Division I in athletics. Greg Knipping, the newly appointed sports information director, recognized the need for a mascot to represent the team in this new era.
Knipping reached out to Keith Butz, an artist who had recently revamped Purdue University’s Boilermaker Pete mascot. Butz was tasked with reimagining Ace Purple as a more approachable and likable character while maintaining the essence of the original concept.
The new design was a success, and Knipping successfully convinced the university administration of Ace Purple’s value as a mascot. He argued that the character’s qualities of cunning, daring, quick wit, and shrewd judgment made him an excellent representative of the Purple Aces.
Tragically, Knipping’s vision for Ace Purple would be one of his lasting legacies. He was among those killed in the devastating plane crash on December 13, 1977, which claimed the lives of the entire University of Evansville basketball team.
Modern Makeovers for Ace Purple
As times changed, so did Ace Purple. In 2011, the mascot underwent another significant transformation. This update was spearheaded by Pieter van Tongeren, a former UE basketball player and member of the Class of 2011. Van Tongeren took on the modernization of Ace’s look as his senior art project.
The process of updating Ace Purple was a community effort. It began with informal discussions on campus about the need for a fresh look. This was followed by an extensive feedback process, including an electronic survey that garnered responses from over 2,000 UE alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends. The new design made its debut during the Homecoming 2011 Reunion Weekend, reflecting a more contemporary vision of the beloved mascot.
The evolution of Ace Purple didn’t stop there. In 2019, as part of a comprehensive rebranding of the university, Ace received yet another update. This time, the university partnered with Ologie, a branding agency, to create a modern look that aligned with the university’s new visual identity. This latest iteration of Ace Purple represents a balance between honoring the mascot’s history and embracing a contemporary aesthetic that resonates with today’s students and alumni.
The Significance of Purple in University Branding
The color purple has been an integral part of the University of Evansville’s identity since the early days of the institution. As the primary color in the “Purple Aces” nickname, it holds a special place in the hearts of students, alumni, and fans. But what makes purple such a compelling choice for university branding?
Purple has long been associated with royalty, nobility, and luxury. In the context of higher education, these associations can be interpreted as representing academic excellence, distinguished achievements, and the pursuit of knowledge. By embracing purple as its primary color, the University of Evansville aligns itself with these positive attributes.
Moreover, purple is a relatively uncommon color in collegiate branding, which helps the University of Evansville stand out in a crowded field. This distinctiveness can be a significant advantage in attracting attention and creating a memorable brand identity.
The use of purple also creates a strong visual link between the university’s academic and athletic identities. Whether seen on campus buildings, in marketing materials, or on the uniforms of the Purple Aces teams, the consistent use of purple helps to create a cohesive and recognizable brand.
The Asexuality Flag: A Coincidental Color Connection
While not directly related to the University of Evansville, the asexuality flag presents an interesting color connection that’s worth exploring. The flag, designed to represent the asexual community, features four horizontal stripes: black, grey, white, and purple.
The inclusion of purple in the asexuality flag is a coincidence in relation to the University of Evansville’s colors, but it offers an opportunity to discuss the broader symbolism of colors in different contexts. In the asexuality flag, purple represents community, while in the context of the Purple Aces, it symbolizes team spirit and institutional pride.
This coincidental color connection serves as a reminder of the diverse meanings colors can hold in different contexts. It also highlights the importance of understanding the specific symbolism attached to colors within particular communities or organizations.
The Creation of the Asexuality Flag
The asexuality flag was created in 2010 through a community-driven process. Unlike the evolution of Ace Purple, which was tied to a specific institution, the asexuality flag was designed to represent a broader community without affiliation to any particular organization.
The design process involved input from various asexuality websites and communities. Multiple designs were proposed and voted upon in a multi-stage process. The winning design, created by a user known as “standup” on the Asexuality Visibility and Education Network (AVEN) website, was first posted on June 30th, 2010.
The simplicity of the four-bar design was intentional. It avoided potentially problematic symbols or national affiliations while aligning with the striped designs common in other LGBTQ+ pride flags. This approach ensured that the flag could be widely adopted and easily reproduced.
Mascots and Flags: Symbols of Identity and Unity
Both Ace Purple and the asexuality flag serve as powerful symbols for their respective communities, albeit in different ways. Understanding the role these symbols play can provide insight into the importance of visual representation in fostering community identity and pride.
The Role of Mascots in University Culture
University mascots like Ace Purple play a crucial role in fostering school spirit and creating a sense of community. They serve as rallying points during sporting events, embody the character and values of the institution, and provide a fun, approachable face for the university.
Mascots also play a significant role in branding and marketing efforts. They appear on merchandise, in advertisements, and at community events, helping to increase visibility and recognition for the university. The evolution of Ace Purple over the years demonstrates how mascots can be updated to remain relevant and appealing to new generations of students while maintaining a connection to tradition.
The Importance of Pride Flags
Pride flags, such as the asexuality flag, serve a different but equally important purpose. These flags provide visibility and representation for communities that have historically been marginalized or underrepresented. They create a sense of belonging and solidarity among community members and serve as a tool for education and awareness.
The creation of the asexuality flag filled a need for a symbol that could represent the entire asexual community, rather than being tied to a specific organization or website. Its widespread adoption since 2010 demonstrates the power of community-driven initiatives in creating meaningful symbols of identity.
The Power of Visual Identity in Community Building
Both Ace Purple and the asexuality flag demonstrate the power of visual symbols in building and reinforcing community identity. Whether representing a university or a broader social group, these symbols serve as rallying points, fostering a sense of belonging and shared purpose.
For the University of Evansville, Ace Purple and the color purple more broadly serve as constant reminders of the institution’s history, values, and aspirations. They create a visual through-line that connects current students with alumni across generations, reinforcing the sense of being part of a larger Purple Aces community.
Similarly, the asexuality flag provides a visual anchor for individuals who identify as asexual, offering a sense of validation and community. Its presence at pride events, on social media, and in other contexts helps to increase visibility and understanding of asexuality.
In both cases, these visual symbols go beyond mere decoration. They serve as powerful tools for communication, education, and community building. They help to tell the stories of the communities they represent, creating shared narratives that strengthen bonds between community members and help to educate others.
The Future of Mascots and Flags in an Evolving Society
As society continues to evolve, so too will the symbols that represent various communities and institutions. The history of Ace Purple, with its multiple redesigns over the years, demonstrates how mascots can adapt to changing sensibilities while maintaining a connection to tradition.
Similarly, the relatively recent creation of the asexuality flag shows how new symbols can emerge to meet the needs of communities that were previously underrepresented. As our understanding of identity continues to expand and evolve, we may see the creation of new flags and symbols to represent a broader range of experiences and identities.
In the case of university mascots like Ace Purple, future changes may be driven by a variety of factors. These could include efforts to increase inclusivity, adapt to changing aesthetic preferences, or align with new strategic directions for the institution. Whatever changes may come, the core purpose of fostering community spirit and representing the values of the University of Evansville is likely to remain constant.
For pride flags like the asexuality flag, future developments might include increased recognition and incorporation into broader LGBTQ+ symbolism. There may also be ongoing discussions and potential revisions to ensure that the flag continues to accurately represent the diverse experiences within the asexual community.
In both cases, the key to successful evolution will likely be rooted in community engagement and a thoughtful balance between tradition and progress. By involving community members in the process of creating and updating these symbols, institutions and communities can ensure that their visual representations remain meaningful and relevant in an ever-changing world.
Purple Aces & Ace Purple
Why Aces?
“Aces” became Evansville College’s nickname in the mid-20s thanks in large part to the University of Louisville basketball coach.
In the fourth game of the 1924-25 season, Evansville beat Louisville 59-39. After the game, Louisville’s coach told Evansville coach John Harmon, “You didn’t have four Aces up your sleeve, you had five!”
Harmon related the quote to Evansville Courier sports editor Dan Scism, and both Harmon and Scism decided they liked the sound of “Aces” better than “Pioneers,” the Evansville College nickname at that time. Scism also had a selfish reason for promoting the use of “Aces.” Those four letters fit into his headlines much easier than the longer “Pioneers.”
The Evansville College colors were purple and white, and by 1926 “Purple Aces” became the unique nickname that is now well known all over the country.
Who is Ace Purple?
The credit for the University of Evansville mascot “Ace Purple” can be attributed to a basketball coach whose team was defeated by Evansville College in the mid 1920s.
After the game, the University of Louisville coach told Evansville coach John Harmon, “You didn’t have four Aces up your sleeve, you had five!”
Harmon related the quote to Evansville Courier sports editor Dan Scism. Both Harmon and Scism decided they liked the sound of “Aces” better than “Pioneers,” the Evansville College nickname at that time. In 1926, with popular support, the switch from “Pioneers” to “Aces” became official, but it wasn’t until the late 1960s that Ace Purple was fashioned by local sports cartoonist, Larry Hill.
Ace was created in the image of a turn-of-the-century riverboat gambler to represent Evansville’s location on the banks of the Ohio River. But Ace Purple also brandished a club with a spike through one end and carried a gun, and his sneer made him a less than likable character. The University was not pleased overall, so Ace Purple the mascot soon vanished, but the team remained the Purple Aces.
In 1977, when Evansville moved to Division I, first-year sports information director Greg Knipping saw the need to bring the character to life as a mascot. He contacted Keith Butz, who had recently revamped Purdue’s Boilermaker Pete. Butz turned Ace Purple into a more likable character, and Knipping convinced the administration that his qualities of cunning, daring, quick wit and shrewd judgment made him an outstanding representative of the Purple Aces. Knipping was among those killed along with the University of Evansville basketball team in the December 13, 1977 plane crash.
Former UE basketball player Pieter van Tongeren (Class of 2011) modernized Ace’s look as his senior art project. The transition began with informal discussions on campus about the need for an updated look. That was followed by feedback from an electronic survey responded to by more than 2,000 UE alumni, students, faculty, staff, and friends. His new look debuted during Homecoming 2011 Reunion Weekend.
With the full rebranding of the university in 2019, Ace received a modern look in conjunction with Ologie, who teamed up with UE in its rebrand.
The Asexuality Flag | Asexuality Archive
This is the Asexuality Flag.
The need for a flag was driven primarily by the desire to have a symbol that belongs to all of us, something that we could use to identify as ace and represent asexuality with that was not tied to a specific group. Prior to its adoption, people would use things like the AVEN triangle or a half-filled heart, but those had problems which prevented their wider adoption. The AVEN triangle is, well, the AVEN triangle. It’s the logo of a single website that not every asexual person is affiliated with. The half-filled heart implies romance, which meant that many aromantics were uncomfortable using it.
In the Summer of 2010, a number of asexuality sites, led by users on AVEN, came up with a number of designs for an asexuality flag, then held a multi-stage vote to determine the winner.
The selected design was created by AVEN user standup, and first posted at 4:36 PM on June 30th, 2010.
Some of the other designs included hearts and spades and triangles and all manner of other symbols. Some of the designs looked like country flags. In the end, the simple, four-bar design was chosen. This design avoids the unwanted connotations that specific symbols like a triangle or heart might have, it avoids any hint of national affiliation, and perhaps most importantly, it fits in with the striped designs of most other GSM pride flags.
(Plus, it’s really easy to draw.)
The four colors all have meanings:
- Black: Asexuality.
- Grey: Grey-Asexuality and Demisexuality.
- White: Non-asexual partners and allies.
- Purple: Community.
Since the flag was selected in 2010, its use has exploded. You can get buttons and bumper stickers and clothes with the flag on it. It’s been seen at pride parades around the world, and some flag makers now offer it for sale. Many asexuality related websites or blogs now incorporate the flag into their design. And, of course, people have even made ace flag cakes. Additionally, the black-grey-white-purple color scheme has been adopted by many aces as a way of indicating their asexuality. I’ve seen ace shirts, ace nail polish, ace friendship bracelets, ace headbands, and ace scarves. Even the logo of this site incorporates these four colors.

From Patriot to Purple Ace – Treaty
Former South soccer success, now D1 athlete
Getting a scholarship to a Division 1 school is an idea many high school student-athletes dream of. One of our very own Parkway South alumni was able to achieve this.
2020 graduate Maria Alexopoulos plays forward at the D1 college soccer program, the University of Evansville in the Missouri Valley Conference.
As expected, there are major differences between high school soccer and college soccer. Not only is college soccer more committed than high school, but also the overall level is higher.
Alexopoulos speaks on the contrast.
“The biggest difference is the intensity of the game and the pace. College soccer is so much faster and is played at such high intensity. It takes so much more mental focus and energy,” she said.
Unfortunately, Alexopoulos’s freshman year started this year while the coronavirus was spreading throughout the United States and the world. Like most sports this year, COVID-19 has affected Alexopoulos’ season greatly.
“COVID has had a huge impact on my season because it delayed it until the spring, and has complicated pretty much every single aspect of life as a student-athlete. I have to get regular temp checks, game cancellations, and quarantining,” Alexopoulos said.
However, despite all the changes she’s had to endure, she still keeps high spirits.
“I am very excited for this season. I have worked hard and can’t wait to play at this level,” she said.
The University of Evansville is currently 1-1-1 so far this season. Alexopoulos has loved the environment so far and looks forward to the rest of her season.
“ I chose to play soccer here because I love the campus, the people here, and the soccer team is just overall a great fit for me. It’s really competitive and has pushed me so much,” she said.
Though Alexopoulos is enjoying her college experience and D1 soccer season, many people miss her and the success she had at South, including girls soccer varsity head coach Kyle Forthaus.
“Maria had a lot of success playing at Parkway South. She scored 20 goals and had 14 assists in 3 years. Maria would have been a 4-year player on varsity at South if COVID had not taken her senior year. She was a team MVP for a couple of years. Also, she was a team captain. Maria was always among the top players for South in goals and assists,” he said.
Not only does her old coach remember her success and personality but so does another 2020 graduate and former South teammate, Jordyn Hadrill.
“I remember Maria always had really amazing ball control. I could always trust that if I passed it to her she would handle it well,” she said. “Maria is one of my favorite people on and off the field. Off the field, she is still incredibly driven and so funny. I have the best times with her and she’s the one I go to when I need someone.”
Alexopoulos’s legacy at South lives on through the example she set and the inspiration she was able to give to the freshmen on varsity last year, in their shortened time together, according to a former teammate, sophomore Sydney Lauria.
Lauria said, “Seeing someone from South go D1 inspired me because it showed me the possibilities of what could come in my future.”
Alexopoulos gave one last piece of advice to other student-athletes.
“Some advice would be to keep pushing yourself each chance you get to prove yourself. Also to never give up on playing at the level you dream of playing at,” Alexopoulos said.
Watch Ace Frehley explore the cosmos as he covers Deep Purple’s Space Truckin’
Ace Frehley has released an animated video for his cover of Deep Purple’s Space Truckin’.
It’s the first material taken from the former Kiss guitarist’s upcoming album Origins Vol. 2, which will arrive on September 18. The album follows 2016’s Origins Vol. 1 and will once again see Ace covering some of his favourite songs.
Along with Space Truckin’, Origins Vol. 2 will see Ace play tracks including Good Times Bad Times by Led Zeppelin, I’m Down by the Beatles, Jumpin’ Jack Flash by the Rolling Stones, Lola by the Kinks and Politician by Cream.
The album’s bonus track will see Ace revisit Kiss track She, which originally appeared on the 1975 album Dressed To Kill.
Speaking about his Deep Purple cover, Ace says in a statement (via Rolling Stone): “Space Truckin’ was recorded years ago, and then I just re-recorded some parts and changed it a little.
“We never ended up putting it on a record, so it was just sitting around. It turned out very well. Keyboardist Rob Sabino is a very accomplished studio musician, and we actually grew up in the Bronx together, so we go way back.”
The animated video was animated by Chris Fequiere and directed by K.H. Lee. Ace previously worked with Fequiere on the video for Mission To Mars from 2018 album Spaceman.
Along with all the guitar parts on Spaceman, Frehley also played bass on all but two of the tracks – enlisting his old Kiss bandmate Gene Simmons for Without You I’m Nothing and Your Wish Is My Command.
Origins Vol. 2 is now available to pre-order.

Baseball
Five Purple Aces baseball players have played in Major League Baseball: Andy Benes, Sal Fasano, Jamie Carroll, Kyle Freeland and Rob Maurer.
Men’s basketball
The University of Evansville School of Athletics was built around the success of men’s basketball. In the early years of the men’s basketball program, Purple Aces competed in the NAIA national tournament. Purple Aces have appeared 4 times in NAIA tournaments (1941, 1942, 1951 and 1955). Purple Aces has a NAIA record of 3-4. The longest distance Evansville made in NAIA tournaments was in the third round (NAIA quarterfinals) in 1951, but only lost to Regis University (Colo.) 70-68.
Shortly after the 1955 season, the Purple Aces moved to the NCAA college division now called NCAA Division II.Evansville Purple Aces have won five NCAA College Division National Championships: 1959, 1960, 1964, 1965 (record 29-0) and 1971. This is the second place of all time.
In 1977, UE began playing in the NCAA Division 1 Athletics. That same year, on December 13, a chartered DC-3 carrying the entire UE basketball team crashed in a field near Evansville Regional Airport on its way to a match against Middle Tennessee. All members of the team and the coaching staff who were on the plane were killed. Legendary Aces coach Arad McCutchan retired after the previous season and was not on the plane. McCutchan was the first NCAA College Division coach to be inducted into the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame. One player was unable to attend the game and therefore was not on the plane; However, shortly after the plane crash, the player who was not on the plane died in a car crash along with his younger brother.
Huge community support brought back the basketball program the following year.Brad Leaf played for the Evansville Purple Aces from 1979 to 1982 and was one of the captains for the last year. In his sophomore year, he set the record for the percentage of free throws for the then Evansville – 81.1%. In 1981-82, he led the school to the first NCAA Division I. He was the school’s first All-American in NCAA Division I. Leaf was fifth in school history in goals (621), sixth in target percent (52.2% ), 7 at points (1605), and ninths in free throws (363).
Evansville was a core member of the Midwest Collegiate Conference, now known as the Horizon League.Aces won or shared the MCC title in the regular season in 1982, 1987, 1989, 1992 and 1993. They also won the conference tournament title in 1982, 1992 and 1993. The Aces are currently members of the Missouri Valley Conference, and won the title in the 1999 regular season.
Purple Aces made five trips to the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (1982, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1999), two trips to NIT (1988, 1994), three trips to the College Insider tournament.com (CIT) (2009, 2013 and Champions in 2015), and two trips to the College Basketball Invitational (CBI) (2011 and 2012).
On November 12, 2019, the Evansville team defeated the University of Kentucky # 1 basketball team at the Rupp Arena, earning national and global prestige for the disorder.
Women’s basketball
The University of Evansville women’s basketball team (Lady Aces) has made two NCAA basketball tournaments (1999, 2009).
The Purple Aces were a fully funded NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) program in the Pioneer Football League without scholarships until 1997. They were champion of the Ohio Valley Conference in 1948 (with a 3–1 record in a conference game, shared with Morehead State) and 1949 (with a 3–1–1 conference record). Since about 2007, there has been talk of turning football back into a fully funded NCAA Division I team, but after a year of investigation, the Board of Trustees voted against it in October 2012 as it is currently too expensive.

Let us remind you that the story was written in 1924. It was the year of the death of Lenin , the year of a desperate struggle for power at the top, but, at the same time, a year of fairly dynamic economic growth under the conditions of the NEP.
Super-NEP
The author does not pay special attention to the economy, but the manifestations of the successes of Soviet power are obvious. For example:
– There are many advertisements on the streets of Moscow, first of all – illuminated: “ on the roof of the Rabochaya Gazeta, chickens lay on the screen in a heap all the way to the sky, and greenish firefighters, crushing and sparkling, poured kerosene over them from hoses. Then red waves walked across the screen, lifeless smoke swelled and wobbled in shreds, crawled in a stream, a fiery inscription popped up: “ Burning chicken corpses on Khodynka ” “.
“Around Bulgakov”: The Rock of Professor Persikov
By the way, Bulgakov pays attention to this aspect for a reason.Earlier, in his feuilleton “Moscow of the 1920s,” he wrote: “ one night, furious with vegetable oil, potatoes, leaky shoes, he composed a dazzling project of illuminated trade advertising. That this project was good is already shown by the fact that when I brought it to my friend, an engineer, for viewing, he hugged me, kissed me and said that I hadn’t gone to the engineering part in vain: it turns out that with my mind I got to that the structure itself, which is already shining on Teatralnaya Square “(and could have invented a bicycle).
– When the chicken pestilence begins, a vaccine against this disease appears quite quickly: “ anti-chicken vaccinations at the Lefortovo Veterinary Institute gave excellent results. The number of chicken deaths for today has halved 90,124. ”
True, its effectiveness turned out to be lower than that of “Sputnik V” – “ having reached Arkhangelsk and Syumkin Vyselka in the north, the pestilence stopped by itself for the reason that it had nowhere to go further – in the White Sea, as you know, chickens not found “.However, maybe the vaccinations were really anti-chicken?
– Absolutely fantastic quote: “ a flaky old car, built in ’24, gurgles on the sidewalk “.
Events, recall, take place in 1928. The car four years ago is already “old”! However, now phones of two years ago are no longer decent to show in every society.
Acting Boris Leontyev, the secretary of the Nedra editorial board, wrote at the time about “ the vigorous impression of the feeling of ‘new America’ “.
Rays are not only red
Professor Persikov had a red ray of life, but in 1919 Bulgakov heard about the “ray of death” of a slightly different color. It is amazing how this wonderful story did not make it to the pages of the “White Guard” and “Days of the Turbins”.
We quote “The Story of Life” Konstantin Paustovsky :
“ When the battle began near Kiev, near Brovary and Darnitsa, and it became clear to everyone that Petliura’s case was gone, the order of the Petliura commandant was announced in the city.
“Around Bulgakov”: Persikov, Rokk and Bulgakov’s fantasies
This order said that on the night of tomorrow, the command of the Petliura army would fire deadly violet rays against the Bolsheviks, provided to Petliura by the French military authorities through the French consul “friend of free Ukraine” Enno .
In connection with the launch of violet rays, the population of the city was ordered to go down to the basements on the night of tomorrow to avoid unnecessary victims and not go out until morning . “
According to rumors, the Petliurites really turned on several searchlights, which caused panic among the Red Army men.
In literary form, these rumors Bulgakov could read in “Sentimental Journey” Viktor Shklovsky , which was already published then (but when Bulgakov got acquainted with it is unknown).
A snake descending from the mountains
Margarita Voloshin said that Maximilian Voloshin sent Bulgakov a clipping from one of the Feodosia newspaper of 1921, which said “ about the appearance of a huge reptile in the region of Mount Kara-Dag, to capture which a company of Red Army soldiers was sent”.
This letter has not survived, and researchers of Voloshin’s work generally doubt that any relationship could have arisen between the poet and the writer before 1925.
In a letter to the publisher of the almanac “Nedra” Nikolai Angarsky Voloshin gave the following assessment to “Fatal Eggs”: “ M. Bulgakov’s story is very talented and is remembered in every detail at once. (…) I would very much like to get to know M. Bulgakov personally, and since you will probably see him, convey to him my deep admiration for his talent and ask him on my behalf to come to me for the summer in Koktebel “.And there is no hint of his participation in the writing of “Fatal Eggs” – neither in this letter, nor in the correspondence with Bulgakov himself.
In general, the Bulgakov scholars who take on faith the testimony of Margarita Vasilievna are acting carelessly.
“Around Bulgakov”: “Curiy dokh” and theatrical reminiscences
Russian, folk, thieves, round dance …
In one of the episodes of the story on Tverskaya there is “… a many-thousand-strong snake chirping at the ends of the Cavalry Army .(…) A deaf and pinching heart was singing through the rows:
… Neither ace, nor queen, nor jack,
We will beat the bastards without a doubt,
Four on the side – yours are not …
The buzzing peals of “hurray” swam over all this mess, because a rumor spread that ahead of the line on a horse, wearing the same crimson head as all the riders, rides a legendary, aged and gray-haired commander of the horse mass ” …
At the head goes, of course, Semyon Budyonny , who really became legendary ten years before the story’s action – in 1918 he played a significant role in the battle for Tsaritsyn (and became close there with Stalin ). True, the cavalry army was created only in the summer of 1919.
Another thing is interesting – the Budennovites are singing a thug song to the tune of the Internationale (at that time – the anthem of the USSR)! “Four on the side – yours are not” – the slang expression of professional cheaters at that time.
There was a similar incident from the life of the writer himself: on August 2, 1924, he wrote down in his diary the story of the writer Ilya Kremlyov : “The th regiment of the GPU went to a demonstration with an orchestra that played” These girls all love “” (song from the operetta ” Motor of love “).
On the one hand, the Red Army is shown in the story from an exclusively positive point of view – it protects the capital from hordes of snakes, crocodiles and ostriches.
On the other hand, the author hints that during the war even the First Horse was by no means an example of “revolutionary legality”.Yes, and about the behavior of Budyonny himself there were a variety of rumors – an anecdote about how in 1937 he rolled out against the NKVD officers who came to arrest him, the machine gun did not come from the ceiling …
The Tale of the Three
With the onset of the epidemic, Professor Persikov was included in the Extraordinary Commission for the Fight against Chicken Plague. What he does there is not entirely clear, because he is a specialist in amphibians and reptiles. Most likely, he ended up there as a leader of public opinion – a media promoted specialist no matter in what area.
Later, this Cheka “ was renamed into an extraordinary commission for raising and reviving chicken breeding in the republic. ” and “ was replenished with a new extraordinary troika, consisting of sixteen comrades “.
“Around Bulgakov”: censorship alternatives to “Fatal eggs”
It is interesting that in 1967 brothers Strugatsky described the activities of the “Troika on rationalization and utilization of unexplained phenomena” consisting of four people (in fact, even six – if you count with a scientific consultant and representative of the local administration, who, however, did not have the right to vote).Mentioned in the text and about “ a certain Two of five people, sitting in the city of Harakhoto and busy with rationalizing only one unexplained phenomenon – the electric worm olgoi-khorhoi ” (olgoi-khorhoi is described in the story of the same name by Ivan Efremov ).
The funniest thing is that after writing this work and transferring it to the publishing house, Boris Natanovich remembered that “ in Bulgakov’s The Devil’s, it turns out, there is also an“ Extraordinary Three of sixteen people ”.What to do? “(well, mixed up – who doesn’t happen to?).
In any case, the original version of The Tale of the Troika was published only in 1987 and not at all due to borrowing from Bulgakov. But this, as Kanevsky says, is a completely different story.
Ready translation Godly Genius / Divine Genius: 32 Blacksmith’s Association :: Tl.Rulate.ru
Ace soon reached the huge building that housed the headquarters of the Blacksmithing Association in the city of Mizo. The building had white brick made from unknown materials and was five stories high. Ace knew little about the blacksmithing group, so he decided to head inside right away.
On both sides of the blacksmith association there were two huge courtyards, and behind the building was a huge empty area, and behind the ground were the gates of various houses.
Ace saw many disciples practice different hand movements on the ground. There was some old man who was talking to each other, sitting in front of their houses.
Ace entered the main building and what he saw inside shocked him. A purple swan sat on the old man’s shoulder. What shocked him was the swan’s wings. On the swan’s wings were blue arcs of lightning jumping from feather to feather.
The old man looked at the ace when he noticed the intense gaze of the ace. He smiled as he said, “Young, you’re surprised, huh? It’s a purple thunder swan.”
Ace looked at the old man as he nodded. The old man was fat, but he had huge biceps. His body was strengthened and he was very strong. It looked like a small mountain standing there.
Ace approached the Swan and was about to pat him on the head when lightning from the swan hit him on the arm. The old man was about to laugh at this stupid youth when he noticed that Ace was okay. The purple thundering swan left the old man’s shoulder and sat on Ace’s shoulder.

The old man was surprised to see this when he smiled “young man, you are quite interesting. This little guy will not approach a stranger unless they have the attribute of thunder.”
Ace nodded as there was no harm in disclosing information about its proximity to the attribute of thunder. The reason was that the Thunder attribute was very rare, but hard to craft. It was like the way ordinary people look at people with the right heart.
Ace soon smiled and rubbed the Purple Thunder Swan’s neck and returned it to the old man. What the old man didn’t know was that he had more than just an affinity for thunder, it was a lightning of sorrow, or you can call it a thunder of sorrow too! She was even more powerful than the usual attribute of thunder!
Ace just needed some guidance on how he could use this attribute of Thunder with Spiritual Power.
In the memories he received from Tian Cui, there were instructions on how to use the normal and rare attribute Spiritual Power, but there was little information on how to use the super rare attributes. There are too few people and beasts that resemble the Thunder attribute, and even fewer Martial Arts associated with the Thunder attribute.
Ace was surprised to find this “Thunder” monster here.
“It is quite rare to find beasts associated with the Thunder attribute.Should it be a rare creature? “Ace asked the old man.
” Yes, I found this in Luangzi Provence. This kid is my lucky charm haha! By the way, I’m Shao Yun, a humble blacksmith. What brings you here, young man? “
Ace found that this old man’s attitude was pretty good when he smiled and answered with a salute.“ I’m here to take the mortal gunsmith exam, maybe I’ll even take him to apprentice level? “
Old Man Shao Yong was surprised when he smiled back and pointed to a huge warehouse-style building.“Go over there, they’ll make it all up. The fee will be 10 gold for the Mortal level and 100 gold for the Apprentice level. You can give it to that guy over there.”
Ace nodded. Thanks. “Then he left without wasting time as he walked straight to the building.
It was an open building and there was only one person there. He was young and had a pale face. He had strange blue eyes.
” I want to pass the mortal level exam “Ace put 10 gold coins on the table as he looked at the young man.
“Which level? There are three levels, normal, elite and expert. The higher the difficulty, the higher the reward.” This system was created because not all Weapons would be the same. There was also the issue of Weapon quality. There was a quality rating for the Weapon that was Normal, Elite, Expert, Spade, and Ultimate. There were only three exams here, as it was only a small town branch of the blacksmith’s association.
Ace directly selected expert level expertise.Soon the pale-faced youth explained to him everything about the exam.
“You must make an expert grade weapon and you will have three chances, and if you do not pass the expert grade” Weapon “two out of three times, you will fail the exam. If you manage to make one attempt with the expert grade” Weapon of two “then you will become an elite Deathly Level Weaponsmith.” me, usually people buy them in the main building, but all the blacksmiths buy the necessary things from me.You will not be able to buy those things that are not available to ordinary cultivators. Once you become a blacksmith, you can buy them. There will be many new items that you can buy as soon as your rank rises. “
Ace nodded when he bought [Blacksmith Mortal Level Guide] and [Basic Metals]. These were simple books and a few centimeters thick. to a bench inside the warehouse as he begins to read a book
The pale-faced youth soon instructed a subordinate to prepare the materials for the exam while Ace was busy reading the book.
It didn’t take long for Ace to read the book as he had a photographic memory. He could remember anything with one glance, and even beyond that, he didn’t even need to read the book, he just had to scan it with Alice’s help, and it would be stored in his brain like a digital book, and he would never forget the content.
Ace decided to pretend to read the book, and he was fascinated by the information contained in this book. There were also attributes attached to certain metals that developed strange characteristics after being in a certain Spiritual Energy attribute for a long time.
For example, 100-year-old iron snow jade. It was the best metal to make a sword, suitable for a person ice attribute, as an ice attribute inside a person and weapons will complement each other and the overall strength will increase. 100 years is just an indication of the icy type of Spiritual Power inside the Snow Jade iron.
There was also a Snow Jade iron for 1,000 years and 10,000 years, and the Ice Jade iron would be higher. There were many rare metals that can even transform a certain Spiritual Power attribute into another Spiritual Power attribute like Ice Jade iron.Even if the user was a water attribute, he could perform ice attribute attacks with his sword if it was made of Ice Jade iron.
Ace soon found the metal he was going to work with, Bleeding Silver. It was a silvery metal with a red metallic luster, and it was a good conductor of Earth, fire and water, such as Spiritual Power.
Ace also received information on how the blacksmiths of this world made their Weapons. They simply used a mold and used various techniques to shape the metal with a hammer. The only difference was that they had to control the temperature of the fire with Spiritual power and control their power when forming the Weapon.
This was not an easy task, as the higher the level of fire used to craft the Weapon, the higher the difficulty and the higher the strength requirements.
This was no problem for Ace and he was ready to take the exam.

Five best guns in Destiny 2
Perfect for PvP and PvE modes, we’ll also tell you how to get them.
Destiny 2’s weapon selection is overwhelming. You can shoot enemies with targeted shots of a sniper rifle from cover, pour a barrage of bullets from a heavy machine gun, use a light and convenient automatic weapon or a heavy rocket launcher, revolvers, shotguns or even swords.
Choosing the top five guns in Destiny 2 is not an easy task, as there are far more than five standing barrels in the game. To select the most worthy, we used the following parameters:
- Weapons should perform well in both PvE and PvP;
- Even a novice player can get it without outside help;
- It does not lose its relevance in the current season.
Additional factors that influenced our choice could be the stylish appearance of the weapon or an interesting quest to obtain it. And here’s what we got.
Wardcliff Reel
This stylish exotic rocket launcher is hard to confuse with others. It occupies a power weapon slot, as it should be for this class.
PvE Usage
Unlike other rocket launchers, the Wardcliff Reel fires not a single projectile, but a whole swarm of homing missiles, each of which also deals area damage. As a result, with one salvo from this exotic, you can clean up an entire army of mobs. The second feature of the weapon is its instant reloading when picking up heavy ammunition. The mods that increase the drop rate of purple ammo will be your best friends.
If there is no trash around the boss, to which the shells will be distracted, then all the missiles will hit him, causing colossal damage. Strong opponents in raids fly off in an instant, and four Wardcliff coils in Gambit can put the Primitive to rest before the enemy invader realizes that it is time for him to jump into the portal.
However, there are more effective weapons for killing bosses, which will be discussed later, so do not hesitate to use the coil to destroy trash.
PvP Use
The main drawback of the Wardcliff Coil in the Crucible is that you only have one shot, so you have to choose the timing wisely. See a group of two or three enemies moving together? The hour has come. With some luck and skill, you can destroy the entire enemy team with a single salvo.
It is desirable to shoot from a short or medium distance.
Where can I find the Wardcliff Coil?
There is no special quest for this weapon, it drops with some chance from exotic engrams, drops in old raids, and also regularly appears at Zur. The catalyst for the Wardcliff Coil drops out simply as you use it, kill opponents from it and you will get it.
Whisper of the Worm
This sniper rifle is terrifying in its appearance.Unlike most snipers, she takes up a power weapon slot and fires purple rounds. Sniper rifles require a good shooting skill from the player, as they inflict maximum damage in the crit zone, but if you like seeing the world of Destiny 2 in the eyepiece of the scope, Whisper of the Worm is a great choice.
PvE Usage
Whisper of the Worm has increased damage from aimed shots, and three aimed hits in a row return cartridges to the magazine. Thanks to these features, a well-aimed shooter with this rifle does not know troubles either in raids or in raids, and inflicts huge damage without being distracted by collecting ammunition.
Despite the fact that the Whisper of the Worm rifle was introduced into the game in the summer of 2018, it has been and remains the best sniper weapon for PvE activities, and has not lost its relevance to this day.
PvP Use
At the moment, sniper weapons are not in the PvP meta, plus it is not always possible to get purple ammunition in the Crucible, however, in skillful hands, the Whisper of the Worm can become a real thorn in the enemy. In Gambit, this weapon shows itself well: it is deadly in the hands of a well-aimed invader, and deals huge damage to the Primal’s eye.
Where can I find Whisper of the Worm?
The Whisper of the Worm quest line is one of the most interesting in the game. You have to open a secret mission in which you will have to overcome a difficult jump puzzle in a limited time. The catalyst for the rifle is obtained in the heroic version of this mission.
Ace of spades
An exotic revolver formerly owned by our friend, Exo Cade-6. The revolver has decent characteristics and a unique story, and although there are other, more powerful revolvers in Destiny 2, we chose Ace of Spades for our top, because getting the Last Word or the Intruder is much more difficult.
PvE Usage
In skilled hands, the Ace of Spades deals devastating damage. Thanks to the “firefly” perk, the victim killed by an aimed shot explodes, inflicting decent damage in the area, and “memento mori” charges the magazine with bullets with increased damage after the kill. The combination of these two features allows you to deal deadly headshots left and right, and given the fact that the Ace of Spades is a weapon of the kinetic slot, you will not know any problems with ammunition.
PvP Use
Despite the fact that the Ace of Spades is inferior to some other PvP revolvers, it works well in the Crucible. After killing the enemy guard, reload the revolver (reload is quick thanks to the “firefly”) and get thirteen deadly bullets. In Gambit, this revolver is also good: explosions blow mobs to pieces, particles flow like a river, and you don’t have to change weapons against the invader.
Where can I find the Ace of Spades?
A small chain of quests for this revolver opens after the Forsaken campaign. The catalyst drops out pretty quickly in any activity.
Handful of Ashes
This exotic grenade launcher has a unique perk “Torment of the Primal”, thanks to which it performs well in any activity.A target hit by a grenade is infected with pestilence, which inflicts significant damage on it in installments, and if the grenade hits the ground, a deadly puddle appears in this place, spreading pestilence. If the target dies from a pestilence, it leaves the same puddle at the place of death.
PvE Usage
Handful of Ashes is a weapon of mass destruction that fires green rather than purple ammo. One projectile into a crowd of hostile mobs – and they die in agony, spreading pestilence to neighboring targets.Against strong targets, the grenade launcher also shows itself perfectly: the first projectile at the enemy himself, the second at his feet – and you can switch to another weapon while the pestilence is active.
PvP Use
A pile of ash is an excellent choice for a beginner who still does not know how to shoot accurately, because even if he misses, there will be a puddle on the floor, which greatly restricts the enemy’s ability to maneuver. The grenade launcher is especially good on control and isolation maps. And the Gambit “Torment of the Primal” lives up to its name – the damage to the boss is significant.
Where can I find a Handful of Ashes?
The Grenade Launcher is given to all Season Pass holders, and the catalyst quest is given by Banshee-44 in the Guardian Tower.
Depressing Hunger
If the four previous barrels in our top were exotic, then the recently appeared machine gun Oppressive Hunger is a legendary, which means that with it you can take an exotic into a kinetic or power slot.
PvE Usage
Oppressive Hunger is inferior to Scheelom, the king of all PvE machines, but it is a pleasure to clean the trash with his help, and it will not be difficult to roll a nice set of perks for PvE.It is much easier to hit from a machine gun than from a revolver or a sniper rifle.
PvP Use
In the Crucible, Oppressive Hunger is probably more common than any other barrel now. Even with an imperfect roll, the assault rifle deals decent damage, reloads quickly and has a good range, and consumes available white ammunition.
Where can I find Oppressive Hunger?
The Assault Rifle falls in seasonal activities, so it won’t be difficult to knock it out. Just play the game.Since Oppressive Hunger is a legendary 3rd weapon, and not an exotic one, a catalyst is not required for it, and pumping to the ideal goes in the usual way, for resources.
Here’s the top 5 best guns in Destiny 2 we got. Of course, there are other great guns in the game, and if you are interested in learning more about them, write in the comments. Perhaps next time we will tell you about the best revolvers or pulse rifles. What weapon do you play with?
90,000 Asexuality: how those who do not want sex live
As befits a full-fledged sexual minority, asexuals (abbreviated ACE) also have their own attributes.Their international symbol is the ace of hearts. There are other insignia as well: a black ring on the middle finger of the right hand, a black-gray-white-purple flag or a badge with a piece of cake that says “I prefer dessert instead of sex”. The symbol of the movement of asexuals in Russia is an equilateral triangle pointing downwards.
I managed (I never spent so much energy on this in my life!) To start corresponding with twenty-year-old Alice, the administrator of the Aven Italia forum. We even exchanged photos. A thin, beautiful (very beautiful) art student from Rome told me her story.“I started it when I was 12-13 years old. At school, everyone at some point began to talk about sex, but I did not understand them. At the age of 15, some of my classmates already had a story to tell in a whisper. And then I seriously thought why, being at the peak of hormonal development, I do not feel anything at all. No sex drive. And it is not interesting to speak on this topic – not ashamed, precisely what is not interesting. I did not understand how sex can be enjoyable and strengthen love relationships. Then it seemed to me that when I find the right person, everything will change. At the age of 17, I had my first boyfriend, whom I loved very much – I imagined our wedding, and our home, and how much we could do together. But sex wasn’t on that list. I didn’t even think about sex. And he thought. And between us every day the tension grew, because of which we finally quarreled. ” ACE dating sites have basic rules for communicating asexuals with sexually active partners. The most difficult thing is to explain to the person you love that your fiery feelings can exist without a bed.“Many of my asexual acquaintances were forced to agree to sometimes sleep with loved ones in order to maintain a relationship,” says Alice. – Understand, it is not easy for us to do this. And neither we nor our partners are to blame for this. An asexual in bed usually does not feel anything – neither interest nor disgust. He does it for the happiness of the other. It happened to me too. I slept with him, I was not disgusted, but also did not excite. ”
How do I get the Ace of Spades exotic weapon in Destiny 2: Forsaken?
Destiny 2: Forsaken brings a host of new exotic weapons. This pistol belonged to Cayde-6. We’ll tell you how to find Cade’s caches and get the Ace of Spades weapon.
To get this exotic weapon you will have to shoot a little and find caches of Cayde-6 (Cayde-6). We leave for the gunsmith Banshee-44 and take the quest “Cayde’s Will”. The quest can be completed after completing the main story mission “Prison Break”. We pass to the end of the plot of the add-on, we take a pistol from Prince Uldren (Uldren Sov), the main villain. We speak with the gunsmith and go to repair the pistol.
We go to the “Gambit” mode (Gambit) and make 5 kills using a revolver. You can join a match where the enemy team already has an open portal through which it is possible to invade your team. You can get the required number of kills in the battle with the “Primeval” (Primeval).
Now we get 250 kills from the revolver in strikes. It is better to choose those in which there are many weak opponents, it will turn out faster.Go to the Crucible, fire 25 aimed shots using the pistol.
Where can I find Cayde-6’s caches?
In this part of the quest, you need to find caches of Cayde-6 on Io (Io), Nessus (Nessus), Tangled Shore (Tangled Shore) and EDZ (EDZ). The developers have hidden them well, so let’s take a closer look at where to find them.
Where can I find Cayde-6’s cache on Io?
On Io, go to the northern area of the map – Wraith Mines. Enter the Giant’s Scar area and head north to Terrabase Charon. We go into the bunker on the left, above which there is a green emblem. We pass into the tunnel and find ourselves in the mines. From there to the left into the room with the first drill, then to the right into the room from where the blue glow comes from. We rise up the tunnel and find ourselves in a large hall. We find the wall on the right, behind it we find ourselves in the hall, at the top of which there is a drill. We find a cache on a small ledge behind it.
Where can I find Cayde-6’s cache on Nessus?
The second cache is found in the Sunken Cavern.First we go to the Artifact’s Edge location, and then east to the Hallows. We get down into the large well, go left to the orange light. We fall into the tunnel leading to the desired cave. We jump over floating boulders to the fork. We go up and to the left. We go into the round arena and turn right. The cache is located in a recess on a well-lit ledge.
Where can I find Cayde-6’s cache on the Tangled Shore?
The cache is located in Hellrise Canyone, in the Fallen lair to the south. We fall into Thieves’ Landing and go to the west, there is the place of the Debris from Saturn (Jetsam of Saturn). From there we go south and find the entrance to the lair. Through the tunnels we get to an open place with a destroyed ship. We take away to the left wall and find a cache. It is hidden between an orange egg and a round hole.
Where can I find Cayde-6’s cache on the EDZ?
We go to the Legion’s Anchor location. To do this, we land in the Watercourse (Sunken Isles) and go to the spaceship. The tunnel to the south will be below it. We go along the tunnel and find a large hall with blue lighting.
