- Contraptions are artifacts. Anything that interacts with artifacts will interact with Contraptions.
(2018-01-19) - Contraptions aren’t put into your main deck. They go into a separate deck called the Contraption deck.

I am 28 years old, I came to St. Petersburg from Novy Urengoy 10 years ago. As a child, I saw a guy from a neighboring yard do a back somersault from the wall, and I realized that I wanted to be able to do the same. Seen enough “Yamakashi” and off we go. About film work
I am currently working as a professional film stuntman. Honestly, I remember the pictures with grief in half: the TV series “Commissioner”, the last one was with Maria Kozhevnikova “You can’t be pardoned” – and then my mother said that she saw me there. I don’t attach any importance to this – I took off and took off. Our films are not interesting to me, although I work in them. Therefore, my team, Alexei Popov and Anton Mikhnenkov, and I are developing our stunt direction. Sometimes I take very risky steps, because of which I get bumps. Everything is based on my own experience, because no one has ever taught me this.
About direction
I try not to start from specific styles when describing my own, there is no such thing: this is wushu, but here we have freerunning.
I know what martial arts are, while many schools just create puppet students for themselves. Children monotonously beat a pear every day, whether they become champions or not, and continue to think that the main thing is the ability to fight, but this is not so, creativity is much more important. That’s what people should be taught, not told how to hit. It is necessary to give a person the opportunity to perform the same blows in his own way, this is what I want to convey to people with what I do.
How did the direction
I came up with my style in India, so I called it “Indian kick stick”. Where I was, there are wild dogs that can attack you, so it’s generally forbidden to walk without a stick. If she is not with you, this day may be your last. So I carried it everywhere with me, twisted it a little, came up with different movements and tricks, and then my whole life was united in this stick: dances, jumps, thoughts.
I remember that I ended up in Aranas, where the sacred river Ganges is located.
There I plunged into a state that can be called “between life and death.” Many people treat death as something terrible, but then I realized that this is a normal phenomenon that no one can escape. Work distracts us, and we forget that we are going to die, and through extreme sports I remind myself of this and act like a real warrior.
Fatal jump
In 2010, I had a difficult jump, after which I left parkour and the entire industry for four years. I didn’t break anything, it’s just that things happened that I wish I could leave behind. This is a sore subject for me.
I returned to sports not because of extreme sports, but because I love creativity. When I do some kind of trick, and it looks beautiful, specific, it also inspires me. One day I woke up and realized that everything had to be changed, and I went to the stadium to train. At that time, I couldn’t even do a somersault, I spent a year trying to restore what was lost. Now I have support, the genre is spreading, recently they sent us videos from Germany, in which the guys are spinning in our style.
About the name Stick Fisherman on Instagram
I invented this character for myself, I associate myself with him, he fishes, feeds cats on the street, helps people, does tricks on a stick and spins on it. I think in the future there will be heroes who will have their own superpowers. This one originated in Sri Lanka: when we went there, I noticed a lot of fishermen who fish with a stick.

— You know, they can do everything. The guys are professionals; now we are going to do a new number, it will just require male acrobatics … And it’s also not easy to hold a stick. You need to feel your partner inside and out: the main thing is balance. The girl flies – the guys should catch her by slightly lowering or raising the stick. Boys need to be 100% sure of themselves.
— But someone told me that they didn’t give Lena enough height…
— No, she lost her temper. In order to do four somersaults, you have to stand and wait for the throw to the end, but she almost “blew up”, did not go to the end.
That’s how this bullshit came about.
– It is interesting to know your opinion about the gold medalists – Beijing acrobats. You once said about the Chinese that you like them for their sportiness, although for art you prefer the Russian circus…
– No, what the Chinese had in Monte Carlo now is, of course, great. But not better than us. Not 100% better.
– Their number looked a little monotonous, I wanted to ask: so what? There was no internal intrigue.
— Well, at our performance the audience stood up and squealed. But: the Chinese had a prime minister in the hall, other ranks, but we had no one. Only Maxim Yurievich Nikulin. And the leadership of the country goes after the Chinese, do you understand? Why are we not interested in our government? We won three “gold” in a year at different festivals – in Spain, in France and here in Moscow. Princess Stephanie, by the way, was at our previous performances – she gave a standing ovation.
And so they took the “silver” in Monte Carlo. The room is outstanding. But no one noticed this …
— Maxim Yuryevich often says that the authorities don’t want to notice the circus…
— Meanwhile, we bring awards to the country. My Lenochka is walking along the arena with the Russian flag – and they applaud her. In principle, I don’t care, the authorities notice – they don’t notice, I earn normally. But I am offended that everyone praises Du Soleil (although it is now crumbling), but we are not. And “Du Soleil” is bursting at the seams, no longer able to withstand finances. And we endure. We are hired, engaged, loved… And I think that our “Russian stick” is the best thing in the world circus today.
— By the way, what is the stick itself made of? Why so flexible?
– These are fiberglass (plastic) poles – athletes jump high on them. And we take three poles, tie them together, make a special pillow to cushion. Length – about 5 meters 10 centimeters, the best option.
The poles themselves (they were bought in America) go 5.20 (this is due to the current world record for high jumps, they should not be longer, otherwise they will jump under 7 meters, this is wrong). The sticks are very light: triple 15 kilograms weighs.
– At first, you and the girls didn’t aim for a quadruple somersault, right?
— Of course not. In no case! It so happened that they took it and did it. Matter of chance. Well, it wasn’t a coincidence — a lot of rehearsals…
— So Lena decided to do it herself?
– She could do five, to be honest. Tried. But more, I think, until the quadruple will not be done – all the festivals have already passed. And now it’s not necessary. Will do three times three and only sometimes four.
— No, but seriously — at some point, quintuples will start spinning? They just get killed, that’s all.
— And what, is a mat laid out at a rehearsal?
— No, no, first we rehearse on the ropes-belays, slowly unfastening these lounges .

— No, we have top boys. But I wanted girls out of principle: this is art, beautiful … And the physical data are the same. By the way, there was one guy who did a quadruple, but he never came to the stick correctly, that is, he performed dirty. And, of course, the 2005 Monte Carlo gold medalist Anna Gosudareva tried – she almost killed herself! You can fall on your head – that’s all. — By the way, since we started — what is the circus today?
– Yes, everything is very bad with the circus. And it’s not that he fell. Who brought currency to the state in Soviet times? Ballet and circus. And now the circus is not noticed.
On the other hand, we are building stadiums in Sochi that nobody cares about! So what are the Chinese doing? For them, the circus is a national industry. They bring glory to their country. And we are trying, puffing up, crippled, but nobody cares. Although we ourselves are very much in demand. — I think that the head of the circus should be the one who understands the art of circus.
Just a manager or chief accountant is unlikely to understand anything. I approve when Zapashny is appointed director of Vernadka, because Garik has lived in the circus all his life, and he, I am sure, will do something good. Let him drag his mother, brother, wife or someone else. Not in this case. Garik is a circus, and if you put an accountant, just for the purpose of making money, yes they will not be earned!
— And since we started talking — how do you feel about the appointment of Polunin as artistic director of the Circus on the Fontanka?
– Polunin is a great man. He raised clowning to such a level that everyone should dream of reaching him. This is the limit of aspirations for any clown. We don’t have clowns today! Do you know about it? Our clowns are now complete crap (excluding Deryabkin the clown). Explain why? Because they only want to make money. And they make numbers. Not clowning. I’m telling. We have everything sharpened for grandmas, so the clown does several numbers, twists them, getting for each exit.
And how was it before? The clown had a repertoire, reprises. Today there is no repertoire (and this is the basis of clown art!)
— But at least the training remains at a high level?
— Of course. I think that there is no one better than the lion trainer Vladislav Goncharov! He puts his head in the mouth of a lion without hands. He also took silver that year in Monte Carlo. Well, and Pavlenko, of course, conducting predators. Also a complete blast. But Goncharov, I think, is doing better.
— By the way, why didn’t you work at height when you came to the circus from sports?
— My wife Olya Ivanova (we have been living together for 25 years) was just working in flight — she made crazy 13-meter flights. But I didn’t climb up to her. She is fearless, and I am a coward. It’s easier for me to stand on the ground.
— Will you give your daughter Polina to the circus?
— No. She will be 10 years old in the spring, plays the harp and sings.
He doesn’t want to go to the circus, he doesn’t get sick of the circus, I don’t know why. Although she knows how to do everything: she twists hula hoops, sits on a twine, stands on her hands … But she likes to play music. Let be. I’m a former musician myself. He took bass guitar seriously. I even looked through Lube, and they even took me. But then I changed my mind, I decided that the circus is closer to me.
– Finally, give a forecast – optimistic or not very: when will this notorious focus only on money go away?
— When people realize that art is more valuable than money. I will say one thing. My number gets very good money. Do you know why? Yes, because I don’t get much. They gave me money for a number. A “good” leader (and I consider myself a bad one) pockets as much as he wants – at least 50%. What is left is scattered to partners. A “bad” leader is the opposite: he takes what is left for himself. My partners adore me because they don’t get much less than me.
They should not work for a penny, and I will never offend them. And if this is the case in every issue, in every team, everything will be on the rise! Here is a recipe. If the artist knows that he is needed, he will begin to give all the best in full. We call Maxim Yuryevich Nikulin “father”. He does everything for us, and we do everything for him. We arrived in Monte Carlo – he tells us: “You are my golden, the best.” Like this. Love must be!
– But in the Russian State Circus there is a conveyor belt, it’s hard to be a “father” there.
– The Russian State Circus takes 40-60% of the contract. Can it work like that? The artist receives a penny, so he does not want to work. And now we went to Orenburg to work on the Christmas trees, and Maxim Yuryevich said: “Seryozha, don’t bring interest to the circus, don’t.” It costs a lot. That’s why we love him.
– The last moment: now everyone is arguing whether a circus show in the image of “Du Soleil” can develop in Russia, instead of (or in parallel) with the traditional divertissement circus of tricks?
— The show is a product of America, Canada, not ours.
