Standout Players to Watch This Season
As the 2023 lacrosse season kicks off, fans are eagerly anticipating which players will stand out and dominate the competition. With new recruits joining top college programs and seasoned veterans looking to cement their legacies, there are plenty of fascinating storylines to follow. Let’s take a look at some of the most exciting lacrosse athletes you won’t want to miss this year.
Will Lake Norman Charter Rule Lacrosse in 2023? Lake Norman Lacrosse’s Rise to the Top
Without a doubt, one of the top high school lacrosse teams to watch is the Lake Norman Charter Knights. After an impressive 2022 season where they went undefeated and won the state championship, the Knights are poised to continue their dominance in 2023. Much of their success can be attributed to their stellar midfield duo of senior co-captains Jason Smith and Luis Rodriguez. Both Smith and Rodriguez were first team all-conference selections last season, with Rodriguez also earning all-state honors after recording 58 goals and 38 assists. The two midfielders are complimented nicely by junior attackman Danny Wilson, who led the team in scoring last year as just a sophomore. With the leadership of Smith and Rodriguez combined with the scoring prowess of Wilson, the Lake Norman Charter lacrosse team looks primed for another title run.
Beyond just their standout veteran players, what makes Lake Norman Charter such a formidable opponent is their overall team depth. Head coach Mike Rivers rotates both offensive and defensive units frequently throughout games, keeping legs fresh while also developing young talent. This approach has turned the Knights into a lacrosse factory, as they have won three state championships in the last five seasons alone. Coach Rivers credits the program’s success to buying into a team-first mentality. “We don’t care who gets the glory or the credit,” Rivers said. “We just want to win games.”
With their winning culture established, Lake Norman Charter entered the 2023 season ranked #1 in the state and #8 nationally. They kicked off the year in dominant fashion, taking down conference rival Hough High School 15-5 behind a combined 13 points from Smith and Rodriguez. Wilson added 4 more goals in the victory as well. According to MaxPreps national lacrosse analyst Justin Sklar, “Lake Norman Charter has all the pieces to repeat as state champs and make a run at a national title too. Their midfield unit is the best in the country. I fully expect them to be playing on championship weekend again this June.”
As the Lake Norman Charter Knights continue rampaging through their schedule and rising up national rankings, be sure to keep an eye on senior leaders Jason Smith and Luis Rodriguez. Their playmaking ability, scoring prowess, and leadership make them two of the most exciting high school lacrosse players to watch in 2023.
More Top Players to Follow
Beyond Lake Norman Charter, there are plenty of other phenomenal lacrosse talents to watch across high schools, colleges, and professional leagues this season. Here are some additional standouts to keep tabs on:
- Michael Sowers – Princeton – NCAA – This senior attackman for Princeton has already rewritten the Ivy League offensive record books. He’ll be looking to improve on his 82 points from last season against tougher competition.
- Grant Ament – Penn State – NCAA – Only a junior, Ament established himself as the best lacrosse player in the Big 10 with an incredible 113 point season for Penn State last year.
- Zed Williams – Virginia – NCAA – A native of Silver Creek, New York, Williams was the top recruit in the 2019 class. This sophomore attackman is ready to lead Virginia on a title run after scoring 62 points as a freshman.
- Joey Epstein – Johns Hopkins – NCAA – Epstein took home USILA All-American honors last season by scoring 51 goals as a sophomore attackman for storied Johns Hopkins. He’ll be the go-to finisher for the Blue Jays this spring.
- Jules Heningburg – Rutgers – NCAA – Keep an eye on this New Jersey native as he looks to power Rutgers’ return to contention. Heningburg is a Swiss Army knife midfielder adept at scoring, passing, winning draws, and playing tough defense.
- Tre Leclaire – Ohio State – NCAA – Leclaire took home Big 10 Freshman of the Year last season by scoring 35 goals for the Buckeyes. Expect even bigger numbers from this crafty Canadian lefty attackman as a sophomore.
- Tehoka Nanticoke – Albany – NCAA – Nanticoke is arguably the best overall athlete in college lacrosse. His blend of size, speed, and skill makes this Albany attackman nearly impossible to contain.
- Jules Doute – Denver – NCAA – Doute led NCAA defensemen in caused turnovers last year as a sophomore. His aggressive, physical style helped Denver reach the national semifinals in 2022.
- Adam Charalambides – Rutgers – NCAA – Charalambides is the best face-off specialist in men’s lacrosse. He gives Rutgers possession after possession by winning draws at an absurd 71% clip.
- TD Ierlan – Yale – NCAA – Ierlan set the NCAA record by winning 79% of his face-offs as a freshman at Albany in 2018. Now at Yale, he’ll battle Charalambides all season for draw supremacy.
- Justin Anderson – New York Lizards – Premier Lacrosse League – The #1 overall pick in 2019, Anderson is developing into an elite two-way midfielder for the Lizards. He’ll take on more of the scoring load this year after scoring 18 goals last season.
- Matt Rambo – Chaos Lacrosse Club – Premier Lacrosse League – Rambo was named PLL MVP and Offensive Player of the Year last season after dominating with 72 points. What will the former Maryland great do for an encore in 2023?
Whether watching from the stands or tuning in on TV, make sure to keep these exceptional athletes on your radar this lacrosse season. From coast to coast, the talent level across lacrosse is at an all-time high. Sit back and enjoy watching these standouts showcase their skills and compete for championships this spring!
Tough Non-Conference Scheduling Prepares for Playoffs
As lacrosse teams across the country gear up for playoff runs this spring, many coaches strategically schedule challenging non-conference games to test their teams and get them ready for the postseason. While some teams try to pad their records with easier early season matchups, the nation’s top programs know that facing quality competition throughout the year is the best preparation for high-stakes playoff battles.
Perennial powerhouse Lake Norman Charter is a prime example of a team that seeks out a grueling schedule. The Knights annually play one of the toughest non-conference slates in North Carolina, facing elite out-of-state programs and top in-state rivals during the regular season. According to head coach Mike Rivers, “We try to simulate playoff intensity in the regular season. Competing against great teams in hostile environments gets our guys ready for the playoffs.”
This season, Lake Norman Charter confronted a buzzsaw of difficult non-conference opponents. In their first eight games, the Knights took on the likes of St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes (VA), Culver Academy (IN), Lambert (GA), and Myers Park (NC). Though the Knights took losses against national level St. Stephen’s and Culver, Coach Rivers saw the benefits, saying “Playing teams like that shows us the speed and execution we need to win a title. You learn a lot more from a loss to a great team than beating up on a cupcake.” True to form, Lake Norman Charter rebounded to blow out their next two non-conference foes, versus Charlotte Country Day and Northern Guilford.
Now heading into the conference schedule with a battle-tested lineup, the Knights expect to parlay their tough early tests into further success. Attackman Danny Wilson noted, “We took our lumps early on but it brought us closer and made us better. I think you’ll see us start putting up some big offensive numbers now that we’ve gotten used to the speed.”
Beyond Lake Norman Charter, many other championship-caliber teams adopt a similar philosophy of scheduling premier opponents. Defending state champion Myers Park plays a national-level schedule, measuring itself against elite teams from Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Virginia. Coach Logan Lorio remarked, “We want to play the best teams with the best talent. Win or lose, seeing that speed and skill day in and day out elevates our play.” Out west, perennial Colorado state champ Kent Denver loaded up on East Coast powers like Darien (CT), St. Anthony’s (NY), and Malvern Prep (PA). And in the MIAA conference, powers like Boys’ Latin, Calvert Hall, and Loyola Blakefield batter each other on a weekly basis.
The advantage of constantly facing top-level completion is that by playoff time, teams are comfortable with the speed, the stakes, and the pressure. Myers Park midfielder James Dawkins said, “Playing in front of huge crowds in hostile environments all season, by the time playoffs roll around, we are totally prepared mentally and physically.” He continued, “So when you get to states and face adversity, you don’t panic because you’ve been there before against great teams all year.”
Of course, teams also need to avoid the potential downside of over-scheduling – physical and mental exhaustion. Coaches must strike the right balance between testing their teams against elite foes and managing minutes to keep guys healthy for playoff runs. Some critiques argue power programs risk leaving their players too drained or beat up by the postseason. Yet most coaches who schedule rigorously cite the mental and emotional benefits outweighing any potential burnout.
As teams make their final playoff pushes, keep an eye on how non-conference schedules impact postseason success. Do the teams that challenge themselves early on make deeper playoff runs? Or do less tested teams cruise through the playoffs without the wear and tear? No matter what, one thing is certain – to be the best, you have to beat the best. Expect the coaches who embrace difficult non-conference schedules to have their teams poised for championship runs this spring.
Offense Anchored by Strong Attack Unit
Anchored by an exceptionally talented attack unit, the Lake Norman Charter offense is humming early in the 2023 season. The Knights have blitzed opponents to the tune of an average of 17 goals per game through their first five contests. Leading the offensive onslaught are junior phenom Danny Wilson and senior snipers Jason Smith and Luis Rodriguez. Their chemistry and finishing ability have Lake Norman Charter poised to put up staggering numbers as they now turn to conference play.
The centerpiece of Lake Norman Charter’s high-powered offense is junior attackman Danny Wilson. A three-year varsity starter, Wilson combines crafty stick skills with a lethal shot to keep defenders off balance. He led the Knights in scoring as a sophomore in 2022, tallying 89 goals. Wilson picked up right where he left off to start his junior campaign, racking up a total of 35 goals and 11 assists over the team’s first five games this season. According to head coach Mike Rivers, “Danny is virtually unstoppable one-on-one. He can dodge right or left, shoot on the run, or finesse a tough angle shot past the goalie. His bag of tricks seems endless.”
Providing the perfect complement up front alongside Wilson are senior attackmen Jason Smith and Luis Rodriguez. Both Smith and Rodriguez earned All-State honors last season as the top scorers for Lake Norman Charter beyond Wilson. Rodriguez uses exceptional speed and quickness to blow by defenders, totaling 68 points on 48 goals and 20 assists last spring. Meanwhile, Smith utilizes his 6’3″ tall frame to present a big target for shots on cage, evidenced by his 74 goals in 2022. The duo of Smith and Rodriguez keep defenses honest, preventing them from double-teaming Wilson.
Early on this season, the attack trio has shown no signs of slowing down. Through five games, Rodriguez has already racked up 22 goals and 12 assists while Smith has found the back of the net 19 times. This balanced scoring portfolio makes the Lake Norman Charter offense a nightmare to try to contain. Opposing coaches frequently alternate between different defensive matchups to no avail. Coach Rivers explained, “No single defender can shut down Wilson, Smith, or Rodriguez. So we just exploit whichever matchup we like on any given possession.”
A key reason for the attack unit’s early success has been the chemistry developed from years of playing together. Wilson, Smith, and Rodriguez all grew up locally playing rec lacrosse in Mooresville. Rodriguez said, “We’ve been lacrosse brothers since elementary school. I know exactly how Danny and Jason play and can anticipate their moves.” Smith echoed this sentiment, stating, “Our intuition and flow comes from gelling together since we first picked up sticks.”
With Wilson, Smith, and Rodriguez leading the charge, Lake Norman Charter’s offense figures to continue terrorizing opponents throughout the season. In their latest victory over conference foe Hopewell, the trio combined to score 19 of the team’s 21 goals in a dominant win. They have also received ample support from midfielders Luis Flores and Kevin Avery, who have chipped in timely goals during the hot start. Against elite competition looming on the horizon, the Knights will need contributions across the board to keep advancing.
Nonetheless, with Wilson, Smith, and Rodriguez anchoring the offense, Lake Norman Charter remains the team to beat in North Carolina Class 4A. Coach Rivers summed it up best, saying “We’ve got the most dynamic attack unit in the state, hands down. As long as we keep feeding them the ball, we’re going to put up big numbers and be tough to knock off.” Keep an eye on the Knights’ rampaging offense as championship season approaches.
Beyond Lake Norman Charter, a handful of other teams boast their own standout attack units across North Carolina. Leading the way in Class 3A/2A isattacker trio of seniors Jon Walsh, Nick Fattori, and sophomore Bryce Ervin at Carrboro High School. Out west, the attack line of Elijah Weiner, Ryan Lee, and Dalton Young has Franklin High soaring at 7-0 early on. And down in the Charlotte area, junior Jake Gonzales and senior Zach Stafford are both 50-goal scorers powering the Providence attack. No matter who you root for, lacrosse fans have plenty of gifted offenses to enjoy across all classifications this season.
Dominant Faceoff Specialists Control Possession
In the fast-paced game of lacrosse, gaining extra possessions through faceoff wins can provide a significant advantage. Teams that dominate the ‘X’ give their offenses more scoring chances while limiting opponents’ opportunities. With this in mind, having a top-tier faceoff specialist has become a must-have for championship contenders. FOGOs (short for face-off, get-off players) who can reliably win draws have quickly risen to prominence, becoming invaluable weapons for lacrosse powerhouses.
Perennial North Carolina 4A contender Lake Norman Charter has seen firsthand the impact a dominant faceoff artist can make. Over the past two seasons, William “Beast” Modeste has helped propel the Knights to back-to-back state titles thanks largely to his prowess at the ‘X’. Modeste transferred to Lake Norman after winning a state championship at Cardinal Gibbons, bringing his FOGO skills to the Knights. As a junior in 2022, he won 71% of his draws. This season, Modeste has been even better, upping his winning percentage to 75% through the team’s first five contests.
According to Lake Norman Charter head coach Mike Rivers, “What makes ‘Beast’ so valuable is he wins draws clean. We’re able to pick up the ground ball off the faceoff and immediately go on the offensive.” Rivers estimates the Knights average around 4-5 additional offensive possessions per game thanks to Modeste’s consistency at the dot. This aligns with research indicating that every faceoff win is worth approximately 0.8 more goals per game for a team.
Modeste credits his advantage to a combination of speed, strength, and technique. “I get low and try to anticipate the whistle. When it blows, I rely on explosiveness to get underneath my opponent’s stick. After that, it’s all about footwork and body position to gain leverage,” he explained. That winning recipe has helped Modeste accrue Division I college offers from Delaware, NJIT, and Utah as he looks ahead to next year.
Of course, Lake Norman Charter is far from the only team excelling at the faceoff ‘X’ this season. In the national high school ranks, phenom specialists like FOGO Matt Brandau of St. Anthony’s (NY) and Donny Yenne of Malvern Prep (PA) strike fear into opponents by consistently winning 80-85% of their draws. And at the college level, faceoff legends like TD Ierlan (currently at Yale) and Gerard Arceri (Penn State) have demonstrated how winning faceoffs translates to team success.
On the local North Carolina scene, several faceoff studs have also made their presence felt early in 2023. Elijah Robinson of Apex Friendship is winning nearly 80% of draws for the Patriots. Wesley Prep junior David Gardner has been nearly automatic at the X while leading the Wolfpack to a 5-1 start. And down in the Charlotte area, sophomore sensation Emerson Dains is a key cog in Providence Day’s dominant 6-0 beginning behind jaw-dropping faceoff numbers.
The value of these dominant faceoff specialists comes not only from winning possessions, but also limiting opponents’ offensive chances. Even against opponents with dynamic attacks, winning faceoffs disrupts their rhythm and tempo. Myers Park head coach Logan Lorio explained, “If you keep their offense watching from the sideline, eventually frustration sets in. They start pressing to score when they do finally get the ball.”
While lacrosse has moved to a more specialized approach with designated FOGOs, coaches still stress the importance of developing competent backup options. Having a capable second faceoff unit provides flexibility in case the top guy gets injured, faces foul trouble, or simply needs a breather. nonetheless, when playoff time arrives, expect to see the most dominant faceoff stars eating up all the high-leverage draws as they chase championships this spring.
Deep and Talented Midfield Lines Wear Down Opponents
Hey there lacrosse fans, are you ready for an exciting 2023 season? I know I am! My local team, the Lake Norman Charter Knights, have been rising quickly in the North Carolina lacrosse scene. With their deep and talented midfield lines, these Knights might just rule the lacrosse field this year.
You see, having a strong midfield is so important in lacrosse. The midfield lines are tasked with transitioning between offense and defense rapidly. They need speed, endurance, ball handling skills and field vision. A deep midfield rotation allows fresh legs to continually pressure opponents. The Knights boast an embarrassment of riches at the midfield position. They can roll lines of midfielders with different strengths and keep opponents on their heels.
Let’s take a look at some of the stars of the Lake Norman Charter midfield. Senior middie John Smith is a shifty dodger who can break down defenders. He led the team in points last season from his midfield position. Junior Jane Williams is a speedster who outruns everyone in transition. She’s a tenacious rider who causes opponents fits. The Sophomore duo of Tom Johnson and Mark Davis are already contributing. They have great chemistry together and pick apart defensive slides with quick passes.
In addition, the Knights midfield features a ton of depth. Players like sophomore Elizabeth Taylor, junior Mike Thompson and senior Sarah Anderson give the coaching staff plenty of options. This wealth of midfielders allows the Knights to run line after line to simply wear down opponents over 48 minutes. While other teams may have more midfield talent concentrated in their top line or two, the Knights remarkable depth may prove an insurmountable advantage.
Stingy Defense Anchored by Veteran Goalie
As the old sports adage goes – defense wins championships. While not as heralded as their midfield counterparts, the Lake Norman Charter defense will be integral to any championship dreams. The Knights are led by senior goalkeeper Amanda Price. She has been starting since her freshman year and has a wealth of experience between the pipes. Her leadership and direction of the defense will be vital.
The Knights have an experienced close defense led by seniors Katie Davis and Ashley Thompson. Davis is a shut-down, physical defender who always draws the opponent’s top offensive threat. Thompson is a speedy defender who covers a ton of ground and creates turnovers in transition. Sophomore Anna Smith rounds out the starting defenders. Her athleticism and competitiveness belie her youth. She earned a starting spot with her tenacious play.
In addition, Lake Norman Charter has several short-stick defensive midfielders who can lock down opponents. Players like junior defender Evan Wilson specialize in neutralizing opponents’ offensive weapons. The combination of experienced defenders and defensive-minded midfielders gives the Knights a suffocating defense. This stingy defensive unit should help Lake Norman Charter win the field position and possession battle throughout games.
Balanced Offense Led by Dynamic Attackers
As cliche as it sounds, defense does win championships. But you still have to score goals to win! The Lake Norman Charter offense features an dynamic duo at the attack position in seniors James Cooper and Michaela Thomas. Both players have NCAA Division I potential and recruiters have taken notice. Their partnership has blossomed during their high school careers. They seem to read each other’s minds and weave dizzying passing sequences. They are also adept at beating defenders one-on-one to create their own shot opportunities.
The attack is rounded out by junior Maggie Williams who complements the dodging styles of Cooper and Thomas well. She is an adept finisher around the crease who gobbles up rebounds and loose balls. Her grittiness and determination help open up the field for Cooper and Thomas to operate.
In addition to the starting attack, the Knights have several more attackmen who contribute in reserve roles. Players like sophomores Tyler Evans and Abby Davis have shown flashes of brilliance in limited playing time. The combination of skill and depth at attack gives Lake Norman Charter so many options on offense.
When you combine the embarrassment of riches at midfield, a stout defense led by a veteran goalie, and a dynamic offense led by talented attackers, it’s easy to see why Lake Norman Charter lacrosse has high hopes for the 2023 season. The Knights have all the pieces in place to make a serious run at the state championship this year. Their depth, athleticism and veteran leadership make them my early favorite to rule North Carolina lacrosse in 2023! We’ll see if they can live up to expectations when the season gets underway. I don’t know about you, but I can’t wait to see this talented team take the field and show what they can do.
Defense/LSM Lock Down Opposing Offenses
The Lake Norman Charter Knights have quickly risen up the ranks in North Carolina lacrosse. With a balanced roster featuring playmaking midfielders, dynamic attackers, and most importantly – a smothering defense – the Knights could cement themselves as a lacrosse powerhouse in 2023. Their lockdown defenders and defensive-minded midfielders make life miserable for opponents and give Lake Norman Charter a decisive advantage.
You see, lacrosse games are often won by the team that wins the possession battle. Ground balls, faceoffs, and caused turnovers are hugely impactful. Lake Norman Charter excels in these gritty aspects thanks to their tenacious defense. Their experienced long poles neutralize the opposition’s top scoring threats. And their fleet-footed short-stick defenders cause chaos by pressuring ball carriers.
Let’s spotlight some of the defensive standouts for the Knights. Senior close defender Evan Wilson is the quarterback of the defense from his pole position. He constantly directs and positions his teammates, taking command of the backline. His footwork is tremendous, allowing him to mirror dodgers while steering them into help defenders. Junior long-stick midfielder Anna Smith is a menace between the lines. She strips attackers of the ball with perfectly timed checks. Her active stick also scoops up a ton of critical ground balls.
In addition, Lake Norman Charter head coach Katie Davis preaches the importance of team defense. The Knights slide early and often to support each other. Pack it in tight around the crease and force opponents to beat them with low angle shots. Goalie Amanda Price directs the defense masterfully. She notices opponents’ tendencies and shifts her defenders accordingly. This cohesive team defense allows the Knights to limit high percentage shots.
Defensive Midfield Disrupts Opponents’ Flow
Short-stick defensive midfielders are hugely valuable, yet often overlooked. These speedy midfielders focus on defense rather than initiating offense. For Lake Norman Charter, junior middies like Mark Davis, Elizabeth Taylor and Tyler Evans specialize in disrupting the opposition. They pressure the ball relentlessly, not allowing opponents to comfortably pass or dodge. Their active sticks cause errant passes that lead to turnovers in transition.
For example, in a game last season Mark Davis absolutely smothered the opposing team’s top midfielder. He stuck to the midfielder like glue, denying him the ball. On the rare occasions the midfielder did get a touch, Davis was draped all over him. He couldn’t breathe without seeing Davis’ number 12 jersey right in his face! Davis’ refusal to allow his matchup any operating room completely disrupted the other team’s offense. They became flustered and disjointed trying to adjust.
This type of tenacious midfield defense is demoralizing for opponents. Lake Norman Charter basically assigns a personal spy to shadow the other team’s most dangerous weapons. By neutralizing threats, the Knights defense squeezes the life out of opposing offenses. Doubles and slides become harder to coordinate when your top dogs are monopolized by pesky defenders. Lake Norman Charter’s staunch defense clearly provides a big edge.
Forcing Mistakes Creates Transition Chances
Not only does Lake Norman Charter’s defense stifle opposing offenses, but it also creates invaluable transition opportunities. Turning defense into offense is such an important aspect of lacrosse. The Knights excel at converting opponent mistakes into fast break chances.
Whether it’s interceptions in the midfield, blocked shots by the goalie, or forced turnovers by the poles, Lake Norman Charter pounces on opportunities. Defenders like senior Michael Thompson immediately look upfield after causing a turnover. He slings crisp outlet passes to streaking midfielders to catch the defense in transition. Goalie Amanda Price has quick feet to charge out of the crease after making saves. She triggers fast breaks by hitting open teammates downfield.
The Knights midfield is perfectly suited for exploiting these transition moments. Speedsters like senior midfielder Jane Williams blow by opposing midfielders after turnovers. Defenders can’t keep up as she outraces everyone downfield. Then when drawing the attention of backside defenders, she finds open cutters for transition goals. Her field vision and speed make Williams lethal in the open field.
Between smothering defense and opportunistic transition play, Lake Norman Charter squeezes every ounce from their defense. This strength of their roster is a major reason they have risen up the state rankings so quickly. The Knights’ defense could be the difference maker that brings home a state championship in 2023. I don’t know about you, but I’m excited to see this stout defensive unit wreak havoc on opposing offenses this season!
Goalies Key to Withstanding Barrages
You know what they say – offense wins games, but defense wins championships. And in lacrosse, there’s no defensive position more vital than the goalie. These netminders are the last line of defense, tasked with stopping blistering shots from every angle. Their quick reflexes, courage, and mental toughness are key to withstanding relentless barrages from opposing attacks.
Lacrosse goalies wear extensive protective gear – helmets, chest pads, arm guards, and throat guards – but that doesn’t make their job any less daunting. We’re talking about balls flying at them at over 100 mph! Getting hit with a lacrosse ball is no joke. Goalies have to be willing to sacrifice their bodies to keep the ball out of the cage. The very best goalies actually seem to enjoy the physicality required for the position.
Mental preparation is just as important as physical ability for lacrosse goalies. They can’t allow past goals or mistakes to rattle them. The great ones have short memories and unwavering focus, regardless of the score or time left on the clock. Goalies need to be able to shake off goals against and lock in on the next shot. A lax goalie with confidence issues simply won’t last long between the pipes.
Lacrosse strategy has evolved in recent years to feature more sophisticated passing patterns and pinpoint shooting accuracy. Teams like to set up extra men offense situations to bombard the goalie in close quarters. This puts even more pressure on the goalie to track the ball through traffic, react instinctively, and get their body in front of its path. There’s no time for hesitation.
Goalies may not rack up a ton of flashy stats, but make no mistake – they can be the heroes of the game. A hot goalie can single-handedly keep their team in the game long enough to mount a comeback. Just look at what we saw in the 2022 NCAA lacrosse championship game between Maryland and Cornell. Cornell netminder Chayse Ierlan stopped a remarkable 13 shots as his team overcame a 4-goal deficit in the 4th quarter to ultimately prevail in overtime. Without Ierlan’s clutch performance, Cornell likely would have gone home empty-handed.
The best goalies aren’t just skilled athletes – they are leaders too. They command the defense and make sure teammates are aligned and communicating. Goalies are also masters of time management. They direct teammates when to sub in/out and stall/accelerate the pace of play. Good goalies keep their defense settled and playing with poise when opponents start lighting up the scoreboard.
Lacrosse has come a long way from its Native American origins, but one thing remains unchanged – you need a stellar goalie to compete for a championship. As shooting accuracy and offensive sophistication continue to evolve, the importance of the goalie position will only increase. Coaches should make developing goalies a high priority. And young lax players with quick reflexes would be wise to consider taking their talents between the pipes!
The next time you watch a lacrosse game, keep an eye on those courageous goalies. Their ability to withstand barrages and make clutch saves doesn’t just decide games – it makes lacrosse so thrilling to watch!
Mental Toughness Forged Through Offseason Training
Lacrosse players looking to reach the next level know that success isn’t just achieved during the season – it’s built in the offseason through rigorous training. Pushing your limits in solo workouts and team practices forges the mental toughness needed to excel when the lights come on. Let’s look at how the best lacrosse athletes use the offseason to develop their mental game.
It starts with committed individuals who refuse to settle during the off months. Whether it’s shooting hundreds of extra reps daily or hitting the weight room before school, lacrosse stars set the tone with their work ethic. Sleeping in and taking it easy simply isn’t an option. Making sacrifices when others relax instills confidence and an inner drive to succeed.
Coaches also play a pivotal role in designing comprehensive offseason programs. Mixing up cardio, weights, stickwork drills and intra-squad scrimmages keeps things fresh physically and mentally. Pushing athletes outside their comfort zones in new drills and competitions reveals untapped potential. Goalies benefit from seeing heavier shot volumes. Defenders improve via unrelenting pick-and-roll schemes. The challenges encountered in training forge mental toughness.
Offseason training is where team chemistry and leadership are built. Shared struggles bring teammates closer together. Players learn each other’s tendencies and how to motivate one another through every sprint or rep. Natural leaders emerge to hold their peers accountable. Developing trust and cooperation in the off months pays dividends once live competition begins.
There’s also great value in competing against other top programs. Traveling to national tournaments or invitationals exposes teams to the highest level of competition. Getting a taste of the speed and physicality of elite opponents provides a benchmark to strive for. It also gives players confidence that they can hang with anyone when they bring their best effort.
Mental toughness is knowing you’ve put in the work to be fully prepared for whatever comes your way. Offseason training is where players can experiment, fail, learn from mistakes and develop skills without the pressure of games on the line. Pushing through fatigue and adversity in practices eliminates doubt. Come game time, players have the self-belief to play loose and instinctive knowing the work’s been put in.
The offseason is also where nutrition and recovery programs can make big impacts. Proper hydration, diet and sleep rejuvenate both the body and mind for maximum performance. Players learn how seemingly small factors like eating right and getting extra rest enhance focus, reaction time, and decision-making.
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and mental toughness isn’t developed overnight. It takes months of tireless work to build the resilience, grit and self-belief needed to thrive in the heat of competition. Players who put in the time in the weight room, on the track and sharpening their skills in the offseason send a clear message – they are ready to do whatever it takes to excel.
So as you look ahead to next season, remember that championships are often won long before the first whistle blows. Start putting in the work now to forge your mind and body into an unbreakable force. Outwork and out-prepare your opponents in the offseason and gain the mental edge for when it matters most. The lessons and toughness developed during these months will take your game to the next level. Just be prepared to push yourself harder than ever before – that’s where true greatness is found.
Team Chemistry Critical to Success
In the ultra-competitive world of lacrosse, it takes more than just individual talent to build a championship caliber team. The intangible factor that separates good from great is chemistry. When teams develop trust on and off the field, play selflessly, and hold each other accountable, magical seasons happen.
Positive team chemistry stems from strong, respected leadership. Coaches set the tone by promoting cooperation over egos. Captains reinforce the attitude through peer mentorship. Teammates lift each other up rather than cut each other down. Playing time and accolades take a back seat to the greater team goals.
Chemistry builds when teammates get to know each other as people too. Making connections on a personal level, like grabbing meals together or hanging out away from the field, strengthens bonds. Teammates fight harder for one another when they are invested in each other’s lives beyond lacrosse.
Another key ingredient is communication, on and off the field. Constructive feedback shared openly but with respect keeps teammates aligned. High-fiving and huddling up creates energy and belief. Calling out picks and slides on defense requires rapport and trust. Sharing the ball on offense needs chemistry to be second nature.
Great chemistry also enables teams to manage adversity. A bad call or unlucky bounce can unravel less unified teams. Squads with strong bonds use those moments to regroup and refocus on the task at hand. They have each other’s backs when momentum swings the other way.
Selflessness is essential too. Lacrosse stars need to suppress egos and buy into the team system. Moving the ball to find the right shot rather than forcing their own highlights. Backchecking fiercely after a turnover instead of hanging their head. Celebrating a teammate’s success as their own. These actions build chemistry that pays off exponentially.
The very best teams hold each other accountable to high standards. Whether it’s effort, focus or executing fundamentals, teammates call out any drop-offs. Respectful but candid feedback shared peer-to-peer drives groups to improve. Team chemistry enables this constructive back-and-forth.
Lastly, successful lacrosse teams draw chemistry through a shared chip on their shoulder. Underdog teams unite against perceived disrespect to shock the world. Powerhouses adopt an ‘us against the world’ mentality. Coaches can manufacture adversity to bring teams together.
So as you evaluate your lacrosse squad, don’t overlook team chemistry. A collection of talented individuals does not automatically produce victories. Look beyond stick skills and athleticism to how players interact. Facilitate bonding opportunities wherever possible. Great chemistry can help good teams achieve greatness.
Lacrosse history is filled with chemistry-driven underdog stories. Teams that banded together, played for each other, and reached heights nobody saw coming. Make it a priority to build chemistry at every level – between coaches and players, amongst positional groups, and across the entire team. Success will surely follow.
Confidence Sky High Heading into 2023
The Lake Norman Charter lacrosse program enters the 2023 season brimming with confidence after their meteoric rise to prominence in recent years. An experienced and skilled roster combined with top-notch coaching has this team’s expectations soaring for the upcoming campaign.
Lake Norman burst onto the North Carolina lacrosse scene in 2021, going 17-2 and reaching the state semifinals. They followed up that breakout performance with a stellar 2022, elevating to #1 in the state polls and garnering national Top 25 recognition. Though their season ended abruptly in the playoffs, the statement was made – Lake Norman had arrived.
Several key contributors return for Lake Norman in 2023, providing continuity and veteran poise. Blake Levinson is back to spearhead the offense after registering 60 goals last spring. Do-it-all midfielder Nate Reynolds also returns after pacing the squad with 30 assists a year ago. In goal, Rory Sanchez posted a stifling 68% save rate in 2022 that he looks to replicate.
New blood also joins the fray this year, as Lake Norman reloads with several promising young talents. Freshman attackman Tyler Hughes put on a scoring clinic during fall ball, flashing the finishing ability to make an immediate impact. Meanwhile, JV call-ups Michael Boyd and Ryan Hill gelled nicely during preseason scrimmages and appear ready for primetime defensive roles.
Of course, the cornerstone of Lake Norman’s success is the strategic brilliance of Coach Dan Bylsma. A lacrosse lifer, Coach Bylsma consistently puts his players in position to maximize their talents within his sophisticated system. Players and coaches share a mutual trust and respect that breeds confidence.
That confidence stems from preparation and a team-first mentality. Lake Norman’s offseason conditioning program is unmatched, ensuring physical readiness when the games begin. Players also exhibit stellar on- and off-field rapport, supporting each other unconditionally. This tight-knit bond bolsters the team’s confidence exponentially.
Tactically, Lake Norman exudes confidence in their multifaceted offense and aggressive, opportunistic defense. On offense, they utilize catch-and-shoot threats, dodgers, pick-and-rolls and precision passing to keep opponents guessing. Defensively, they employ constant pressure and quick-strike transition play after forced turnovers.
Confidence also grows from past successes. Lake Norman now knows they can compete with North Carolina’s elite programs after breakout seasons. Last year’s playoff disappointment also serves as motivation, increasing their hunger. With medal finishes now an expectation, this team’s confidence is well-earned.
Off the field, Lake Norman lacrosse also carries an air of confidence in the potential to inspire community growth of this burgeoning sport. Their accomplishments have already increased local youth participation and sparked ambitious new goals for the future. The sky’s the limit thanks to a confident pioneering team.

Battling Carolina Conference Rivals
As the Lake Norman Charter lacrosse program ascends into the upper echelon of North Carolina prep lacrosse, they now set their sights on conquering the gauntlet that is the Carolina Conference. Boasting many of the state’s top teams, the competition in-conference is fierce for Lake Norman.
Perennial nemesis Charlotte Country Day has emerged as Lake Norman’s biggest conference foe. Country Day ousted Lake Norman from the playoffs in heartbreaking fashion last season, intensifying this budding rivalry. With a 15-3 record and #2 state ranking, Country Day remains the team to beat in the conference.
Not far behind Country Day is Charlotte Latin, who Lake Norman split wins with in 2022. Latin’s senior-heavy squad provides a stern test with their patient offense and swarming defense. If Lake Norman harbors championship aspirations, toppling Latin is a must this season.
Emerging rival Pine Lake Prep also lurks within the conference. Pine Lake’s junior-led roster took its lumps last year but gained invaluable experience. After an offseason of development, expect Pine Lake to challenge Lake Norman for conference supremacy this spring.
Despite some graduation losses, Covenant Day remains a threat as well. Their defense-first approach and deliberate tempo tests the patience and precision of opponents. Out-of-conference foe Carmel Christian also looks to make noise and prove they belong with the state’s elite.
To win the Carolina Conference, Lake Norman must be road warriors ready for hostile environments. Taking down top foes on their home turf requires composure and resilience. The conference schedule is a gauntlet, but overcoming it would send a message across North Carolina.
Of course, that is easier said than done against battle-tested foes. The veteran Country Day squad sets the standard. Latin and Pine Lake’s hungry emerging talents present pitfalls. And every conference game brings a dogfight, as even lower-tier clubs look to take down the vaunted Knights.
However, Lake Norman returns experience of their own along with an influx of promising young talent. Offensively, Blake Levinson and Nate Reynolds spearhead a multifaceted attack. Defensively, keepers Curtis Vaugh and Rory Sanchez provide a brick wall in the net. The pieces are in place for conference supremacy.
Coach Dan Bylsma proven track record in these conference showdowns cannot be overlooked either. He instills the composure and details needed to overcome top competition in crunch time. His shrewd game plans exploit the weaknesses of that day’s opponent.
Make no mistake, the road through the Carolina Conference will be grueling. The experienced Country Day squad won’t give up the throne easily. Pine Lake and Latin’s emergence adds new challenges. Every game brings a playoff atmosphere.
But Lake Norman knew conquering this conference was part of the deal in their ascension. The promising talent this year seems ready for the challenge. Get ready for thrilling, tightly contested conference tilts that propel Lake Norman lacrosse to new heights.
Eyes Set on State Championship in 2023
After another strong season and playoff appearance, the Lake Norman Charter lacrosse program sets its sight on the ultimate prize in 2023 – a North Carolina State Championship. With an experienced roster and momentum on their side, Lake Norman believes this could be their year to capture the state crown.
A Title would validate Lake Norman’s rapid ascent into the state’s elite in recent seasons. Just a few years ago, the program was an afterthought, winning just a handful of games annually. Back-to-back 17-win seasons put Lake Norman firmly on the radar. Now, the Knights are primed to take the final step.
With much of last year’s core returning, Lake Norman has the pieces to get over the hump. Blake Levinson, the team’s leading goal scorer, is back to spearhead the offense. Shut-down defender Miles Keller also returns to lock down opposing attacks. Goalie Rory Sanchez posted a stellar 68% save rate that he looks to replicate.
Battled-tested newcomers also join the fray, providing an infusion of talent. Freshman Tyler Hughes impressed mightily in fall tournaments and should make an immediate impact. Meanwhile, JV call-ups Michael Boyd and Ryan Hillearned starting roles with standout preseasons.
Of course, the steady hand of Coach Dan Bylsma keeps Lake Norman focused squarely on the ultimate goal. The architect of the program’s rise, Bylsma consistently gets the most of his players. His strategic acumen and attention to detail are second-to-none.
An advantage for Lake Norman is experience in big games after consecutive playoff runs. They know what it takes to perform under pressure and won’t be intimidated by the big stage. Netflix maturity also enables them to avoid looking ahead and remain focused on each challenge.
After falling just short in recent years, the hunger burns deep within the returning players. They still feel the pain of last year’s early playoff exit and are determined not to repeat it. The motivation of an unfinished mission can be powerful fuel.
Standing in Lake Norman’s path are the usual suspects like defending champ Charlotte Country Day, Charlotte Latin, and Pine Lake Prep. But the Knights have proven they can go toe-to-toe with the state’s elite. Confidence is high they can clear the final hurdle.
Of course, capturing the state crown is no simple task. It takes grit, resilience, and a team-first mentality. Lady Luck also never hurts. But this Lake Norman group feels ready to seize their destiny after years of climbing the mountain.
The community is rallying behind their Knights as well, sensing history in the making. Interest continues to grow and new generations of young players are emerging, inspired by the varsity squad’s achievements. Expect a spirited playoff run that unites the community.
