The Chesapeake Bayhawks: A Defensive Juggernaut
The Chesapeake Bayhawks have long been synonymous with defensive excellence in Major League Lacrosse. Their reputation as a formidable opponent is built on a foundation of strong defensive play and clutch performances.

At the heart of the Bayhawks’ success is their elite defense, anchored by standout player Goran Murray. Murray’s leadership and skill on the defensive end have been instrumental in shutting down opposing offenses and creating opportunities for the Bayhawks’ attack.

The Denver Outlaws: Hungry for Redemption
After falling short in the last two MLL finals, the Denver Outlaws are more motivated than ever to claim the Steinfeld Cup in 2023. With a roster brimming with talent and a chip on their shoulder, the Outlaws are a team to watch this season.
MVP Caliber Leadership
At the forefront of the Outlaws’ attack is two-time reigning MVP Chris Cloutier. Paired with the veteran presence of Eric Law, the Outlaws’ offense is a force to be reckoned with.
Faceoff Dominance
One of Denver’s key advantages lies in the faceoff circle, where Max Adler has established himself as one of the premier specialists in the league. Adler’s ability to consistently win possessions gives the Outlaws’ offense more opportunities to score and puts pressure on opposing defenses.
Redemption Narrative

These new additions, combined with established veterans like Greg Coholan, make the Rattlers a dark horse candidate for a deep playoff run.
Chaos LC
Formerly known as Chrome LC, the newly rebranded Chaos team is looking to shake up the MLL hierarchy. Led by British stars Ben McIntosh and Adam Jones, the Chaos bring a unique blend of skill and athleticism to the field. With goalie Adam Ghitelman capable of single-handedly winning games, the Chaos have the potential to upset any team on any given day.
Atlanta Blaze
The Blaze have been steadily building a competitive roster and developing a winning culture. With a mix of young talent and experienced veterans, Atlanta is poised to take the next step and challenge the established powers of the league.
The Impact of League Expansion on Competition
The recent expansion of Major League Lacrosse to 10 teams has had a significant impact on the competitive landscape of the league. This growth has brought about several changes that are shaping the 2023 season and beyond.
Increased Parity
With the addition of new teams, the talent pool has been spread more evenly across the league. This has led to increased parity, making it more difficult for any single team to dominate the competition. As a result, fans can expect more closely contested games and unpredictable outcomes throughout the season.
Emerging Rivalries
The expansion has also given rise to new geographic rivalries. These budding rivalries add an extra layer of excitement to regular season matchups and have the potential to develop into fierce playoff battles in the years to come.
Playoff Race Intensity
With more teams vying for a limited number of playoff spots, the race for postseason berths has become more intense than ever. Every game carries significant weight, as teams jockey for position in the standings throughout the season.
Factors That Will Shape the 2023 MLL Season
As we look ahead to the 2023 Major League Lacrosse season, several key factors will play a crucial role in determining which teams rise to the top and which fall short of their goals.
Injury Management
In a physically demanding sport like lacrosse, injuries can make or break a team’s season. How well organizations manage player health and maintain depth across their rosters will be crucial to sustaining success throughout the long MLL campaign.
Adapting to Rule Changes
The MLL has implemented several rule changes in recent years aimed at increasing the pace of play and scoring. Teams that can quickly adapt to these changes and leverage them to their advantage will have a leg up on the competition.
Youth Development
As the sport of lacrosse continues to grow at the youth and collegiate levels, the influx of young talent into the MLL is accelerating. Teams that can effectively integrate promising rookies with their veteran core will be well-positioned for both short-term success and long-term stability.
Coaching Strategies
In a league where the margin between winning and losing is often razor-thin, innovative coaching strategies can make all the difference. Look for teams with adaptable game plans and the ability to make in-game adjustments to have an edge throughout the season.
As the 2023 Major League Lacrosse season unfolds, these factors will intertwine to create a compelling narrative of triumph, disappointment, and redemption. With established powerhouses looking to maintain their dominance and emerging contenders eager to make their mark, lacrosse fans are in for a thrilling summer of high-stakes competition.
The Boston Cannons – A Historic Lacrosse Franchise
The Boston Cannons are one of the original six teams that founded Major League Lacrosse (MLL) back in 2001. Located in Boston, Massachusetts, they have established themselves as one of the most successful and iconic franchises in pro lacrosse history.
With eight championship titles to their name, the Cannons are tied with the Chesapeake Bayhawks for the most in MLL history. They won their first Steinfeld Cup in 2011 and quickly became a league powerhouse, winning four straight championships from 2011-2014. This dominating run was kickstarted by legendary Cannons players like Paul Rabil, Ryan Boyle, and Matt Poskay.
After a few down years, the Cannons reemerged as a top contender in 2019 when they defeated the Denver Outlaws in the championship game. They once again hoisted the Steinfeld Cup in 2021 with a gritty win over the Outlaws, proving that the championship pedigree is alive and well in Boston.
The Cannons have called legendary Harvard Stadium their home turf since joining the MLL. With a capacity of over 30,000, it provides an intimate setting with excellent sightlines for lacrosse. The passionate Boston lacrosse community has embraced the Cannons, giving them a strong home field advantage.
Beyond their on-field success, the Cannons have helped grow the game of lacrosse tremendously in the northeast region. Through extensive youth outreach and development programs, they are ensuring the future of the sport is bright in Boston.
With a committed ownership group and front office, plus a roster stacked with All-Star talent, the Boston Cannons remain focused on contending for more Steinfeld Cups. Their winning tradition and lasting impact make them one of the most storied franchises in pro lacrosse history.
Which Major League Lacrosse Teams: Here are the Top Contenders For The 2023 Season
Major League Lacrosse is poised for an exciting 2023 season with several top contenders vying for the Steinfeld Cup. Here are some of the top teams to watch this year:
- Boston Cannons – The defending champs still have a potent offense led by Paul Rabil and Mark Cockerton. Their midfield unit is stacked and goalie Nick Marrocco was an All-Star in 2022. The Cannons are primed to make another title run.
- Chesapeake Bayhawks – With championship pedigree and an elite defense anchored by Goran Murray, the Bayhawks are always a threat. Lyle Thompson and Andrew Kew give them firepower on attack.
- Denver Outlaws – Seeking revenge after losing in the last two finals, Denver boasts two-time reigning MVP Chris Cloutier at attack along with Eric Law. Faceoff ace Max Adler gives them possession.
- New York Lizards – New head coach Sean Quirk has rejuvenated New York. Grant Ament is an electrifying playmaker and Joe Nardella dominates faceoffs. Goalie Jack Concannon should have a big year.
- Dallas Rattlers – The Rattlers have added talent like Josh Byrne, Jake Carraway and Ryder Garnsey to pair with mainstays like Greg Coholan. They could break through in 2023.
- Chaos LC (formerly Chrome) – Led by British stars Ben McIntosh and Adam Jones, the Chaos have lots of athleticism. Goalie Adam Ghitelman is capable of winning games himself.
Other teams like the Atlanta Blaze, Connecticut Hammerheads and Cannons LC will look to shake up the league’s established contenders. Each franchise is loaded with All-Star talent, making the parity in the MLL extremely tight.
The Boston Cannons will look to defend their title while fending off stiff competition from Chesapeake, Denver and surging challengers like New York. The parity at the top means every game matters, so every team has a chance to hoist the trophy.
After expanding to 10 teams, the league’s balance of power seems wide open heading into 2023. Lacrosse fans are sure to see competitive games every week as these top contenders battle for playoff positioning. It all sets the stage for what should be an intense run to championship weekend.
The New York Lizards – Big Apple Lacrosse Powerhouse
With the 2023 Major League Lacrosse season fast approaching, lacrosse fans are gearing up for another exciting summer of fast-paced action. One team that always seems to be in the mix when it comes to championship contention is the storied New York Lizards franchise. Based out of Long Island and playing their home games at James M. Shuart Stadium, the Lizards have long been one of the premier organizations in pro lacrosse.
The Lizards were one of the founding members of Major League Lacrosse back in 2001 and have claimed three MLL Championships over the years (2001, 2003, 2015). They have also reached the playoffs 12 times in their 21 seasons of existence. For any team in any sport, that level of continued excellence is remarkable.
So what makes the Lizards such a lacrosse powerhouse? First and foremost, it’s their ability to consistently field a stacked roster year after year. The Lizards have attracted some of the biggest names in the sport over the past two decades, including all-time greats like Paul Rabil, Rob Pannell, and Greg Gurenlian. They’ve also drafted and developed homegrown stars like Joe Walters, Drew Adams, and CJ Costabile. The Lizards’ masterful roster construction enables them to plug new rising talent into their system seamlessly.
Beyond personnel, the Lizards emphasize skillful and creative offense coupled with aggressive, smothering defense. Their style of play is fast, athletic, and highly entertaining for fans. On offense, they space the field beautifully, whip the ball around quickly with crisp passing, and take advantage of even the smallest lapses in the defense. Meanwhile, their defense likes to apply tons of pressure on the ball handler and force opponents into mistakes.
The Lizards also foster a winning culture rooted in pride for the organization. They never settle for mediocrity or rebuild – the expectation is to compete for a championship year in and year out. That steadfast commitment to excellence permeates the entire franchise.
Heading into 2023, the Lizards once again look primed to be a force. After adding NCAA standouts like Chris Gray and Jeff Teat in the collegiate draft, their offense looks as dangerous as ever. Young phenom Teat will join veteran stars like Rabil, Costabile, and Walters to form an imposing scoring unit. The defense remains staunch as well behind mainstays like Jack Concannon and Johnny Surdick.
The Lizards will be led by talented new head coach Sean Lindsay, who took over in the offseason after previous coach BJ O’Hara departed. Lindsay has experience with the Lizards organization and aims to build upon their winning tradition. With his offensive creativity and the abundance of talent at his disposal, he’s the perfect coach to guide the Lizards’ title quest.
If their offseason moves pay dividends as anticipated, the Lizards have all the pieces in place to capture their fourth MLL title in 2023. It’s never easy competing against the league’s other perennial contenders, but the Lizards relish their role as a model franchise that sets the standard. Their consistent greatness makes them the envy of the MLL – and the team everyone is chasing.
Which Major League Lacrosse Teams: Here are the Top Contenders For The 2023 Season
With the 2023 Major League Lacrosse season set to face-off soon, lacrosse fans are eager to see which teams will emerge as top championship contenders this year. The MLL features six franchises spread across the United States that compete for the coveted Steinfeld Trophy each summer.
Heading into the new campaign, parity looks to be the name of the game. No single franchise stands out as an obvious favorite, which should make for some thrilling matchups and intense playoff races. Here’s a look at the teams that appear poised to battle it out for MLL supremacy in 2023:
Chesapeake Bayhawks
Based out of Annapolis, Maryland, the Chesapeake Bayhawks have a rich history that includes winning seven MLL championships since their inception in 2002. They missed the playoffs last season but have retooled heading into 2023. Veterans like Lyle Thompson and Andrew Kew give Chesapeake valuable experience, while newcomers like JT Giles-Harris and Chris Gray inject youthful talent. This blend of seasoned winners and exciting rookies makes the Bayhawks a dangerous squad.
New York Lizards
The Lizards are one of the MLL’s original franchises and perennial contenders who always boast a stacked lineup. New York only managed a .500 record last season but nearly upset the eventual champion Cannons in the playoffs. With the offseason additions of college stars like Jeff Teat and Chris Gray to complement holdovers like Paul Rabil and Drew Adams, the Lizards have enough firepower to gun for their fourth MLL title.
Boston Cannons
The reigning MLL champions had a storybook season in 2022, riding rookie sensation Matt Moore all the way to the Steinfeld Trophy. Moore amazingly scored 61 goals, breaking the all-time MLL single-season scoring record. With Moore back in the fold alongside savvy vets like Mark Cockerton and Kyle Harrison, Boston is well positioned to defend its crown in 2023.
Denver Outlaws
Since joining MLL as an expansion team in 2006, the Outlaws have been a model of consistency. They’ve made the playoffs every year of their existence and have won three championships along the way. While Denver fell short against Boston in last year’s title game, their potent offense led by Chris Aslanian and Dylan Gaines will power another strong Outlaws squad in 2023.
Philadelphia Barrage
After sitting out four straight seasons, the Barrage returned to MLL action in 2022 led by Coach Spencer Ford. They only managed a 3-9 record last year but showed real promise on offense behind younger players like Brendan Sunday and Jackson Morrill. If those young guns take the next step in their development, Philadelphia could go from afterthought to contender in 2023.
Atlanta Blaze
Atlanta joined MLL as an expansion franchise last season and took their lumps, finishing with just one win. But the Blaze got significantly stronger this offseason, adding established stars like Lyle Thompson, Mikie Schlosser, and Logan Wisnauskas. Those veterans will team with exciting young returners like Bryce Young to make Atlanta a potential sleeper team in 2023.
The parity across the league means that any franchise has a chance at capturing the Steinfeld Trophy this summer. With grizzled veterans, rising young talents, championship pedigrees, and redemptive stories all in the mix, the 2023 MLL season is shaping up to be wildly unpredictable. So strap in for what should surely be a competitive and entertaining campaign ahead for the top contenders vying for pro lacrosse supremacy.
Chesapeake Bayhawks – Perennial Title Threats
In the world of professional lacrosse, few franchises can match the championship pedigree and sustained excellence of the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Based in Annapolis, Maryland, the Bayhawks have been one of Major League Lacrosse’s most dominant teams since first taking the field back in 2002.
Across their storied history, Chesapeake has reached the playoffs a remarkable 16 times in 21 seasons. Even more impressively, they’ve come away with the Steinfeld Trophy as MLL champions in nearly half of those postseason appearances. The Bayhawks’ seven titles are the most by any team in league history.
So what allows this franchise to remain so consistently competitive year after year? First and foremost, it stems from the Bayhawks’ top-notch leadership and commitment to cultivating a winning culture. General manager Dave Cottle has been masterful at acquiring the right blend of veteran stars, emerging young talent, and key role players to fit their system.
Once these players don the Chesapeake uniform, they quickly buy into the Bayhawks’ team-first mentality and relentless will to win. Egos are suppressed in favor of working cohesively to achieve the ultimate goal. This selfless culture filters down from the veterans and makes the Bayhawks a brotherhood on and off the field.
It certainly helps too that the Bayhawks play in a lacrosse hotbed like Maryland, where community support runs deep. The fans pack Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium and create an electric game-day atmosphere to fuel the team.
On the field, Chesapeake combines athleticism, skill, and physicality to outwork opponents. They share the ball selflessly on offense and rotate frequently to keep legs fresh. Their defense likes to play aggressively by pressuring ball handlers and forcing turnovers.
Entering the 2023 season, the Bayhawks look poised to contend yet again after revamping their roster. Offensively, newly acquired young stars like JT Giles-Harris and Chris Gray make Chesapeake faster and more dynamic. They complement key returners like Lyle Thompson, a former MVP who is arguably the best player in the sport.
With excellent coaching, staunch defense, home crowd energy, and loads of offensive firepower, the Chesapeake Bayhawks have all the ingredients to capture another championship. Rival teams know better than to ever count out this perennial powerhouse.

Parity reigns supreme in the MLL, so any one of these teams could catch fire at the right time and hoist the Steinfeld Trophy. As the opening face-off nears, here’s a rundown of the top contenders angling to rule the lacrosse world in 2023:
New York Lizards
The Lizards are among the MLL’s original franchises and have always been a model of consistency, making the playoffs 12 times. Their offense promises to thrill fans with athleticism and creativity behind rising college stars like Jeff Teat along with veterans like Paul Rabil.
Boston Cannons
The defending MLL champions will be eager to repeat behind their stellar rookie sensation Matt Moore, who shattered the league’s single-season scoring record last season. Moore and a solid supporting cast have Boston poised for more glory.
Denver Outlaws
Since joining MLL in 2006, the Outlaws have never missed the postseason and own three titles. Their lethal offense led by Chris Aslanian and Dylan Gaines makes Denver a safe bet to be in championship contention again.
Philadelphia Barrage
After four dormant seasons, Philly returned to MLL in 2022 behind an intriguing crop of young offensive talent like Brendan Sunday and Jackson Morrill. If they continue developing, the Barrage become a sleeper team.
Atlanta Blaze
The Blaze suffered through an expansion team’s expected growing pains last season but used the offseason to load up on proven veterans like Lyle Thompson who can guide their young stars like Bryce Young.
Chesapeake Bayhawks
With seven titles since 2002, the Bayhawks are the MLL’s winningest franchise. After retooling their roster with athletic playmakers like JT Giles-Harris, they are primed to contend yet again behind their championship DNA.
All signs point to an ultra-competitive 2023 MLL season with no shortage of compelling storylines. Between redemptive quests, rookie phenoms, resurgent franchises, and perennial powerhouses, the road to the Steinfeld Trophy promises to be a rugged gauntlet. Strap in for the ride and get ready to watch lacrosse history unfold before our eyes.
Atlanta Blaze – Emerging Southern Force
The newest franchise in Major League Lacrosse, the Atlanta Blaze, burst onto the scene in 2022 as the league’s sixth team. After the expected growing pains of an expansion team’s inaugural season, the Blaze have aggressively retooled their roster and now look ready to announce their arrival as a rising contender in 2023.
Based in Marietta, Georgia, the Blaze become the first MLL team to represent the South. Lacrosse talent below the Mason-Dixon line has exploded in recent years. The Blaze offer those Southern standouts and fans a professional home to call their own.
Atlanta struggled to just one win last season while rotating in loads of fresh-faced rookies around mainstay Randy Staats. But their youthful exuberance also showed through in the form of the MLL’s highest-scoring offense. The Blaze know they can light up the scoreboard with anyone.
Eager to accelerate their developmental timeline, Atlanta added three huge veteran pieces in the offseason. The acquisitions of Lyle Thompson, Mikie Schlosser, and Logan Wisnauskas give the Blaze battle-tested stars to pair with their precocious young guns.
Thompson, arguably the best player in pro lacrosse, brings championship pedigree and unmatched field vision. Schlosser is a big-bodied crease presence who can finish tough goals inside. And Wisnauskas is a lethal outside shooter who can space the floor and has a proven track record as a finisher.
Their additions blend perfectly with Atlanta’s existing strengths. Dynamic young talents like Bryce Young, Spencer Knight, and Cam Wengren now have savvy role models to learn from. Meanwhile, the veterans benefit from the youngsters’ speed and athleticism to reduce their own workload.
The Blaze also tapped collegiate coaching legend John Tillman to lead the squad in the offseason. Tillman’s championship successes at Maryland lend instant credibility within the locker room. His tactical acumen should help Atlanta’s defense catch up with their ultra-potent offense.
Goaltending and defensive chemistry were the Blaze’s glaring weaknesses last season. But a year of experience for returners like Nick Beattie, Bryan Hess and Grayson Burns along with some shrewd veteran additions should shore things up on the less glamorous end.
With an energized fanbase providing homefield advantage and their roster now loaded for bear, everything is aligning for the Atlanta Blaze. Their regular season opener against arch-rival Chesapeake will be a telling benchmark. But by season’s end, don’t be surprised if this emerging southern force is competing for an MLL crown.

Representing a renowned lacrosse hotbed like Philly, the Barrage take immense pride in showcasing the gritty style of play the city is known for. They combine blue-collar hustle with plenty of athleticism to form an intriguing roster identity.
Last season in their return, the Barrage leaned heavily on youth and speed. College standouts like Brendan Sunday, Josh Byrne, and Jackson Morrill energized the offense by pushing tempo and attacking relentlessly. There were plenty of expected growing pains, but a 3-9 record was a solid baseline.
For 2023, the Barrage are building on last year’s foundation while continuing to craft a scrappy, defense-oriented identity. The offense maintains breakneck speed in transition to generate loads of shot volume and highlighted by creative dodging. Meanwhile, the defense employs constant pressure and physicality to forced opponents into slogs.
Not surprisingly, head coach Spencer Ford is emphasizing fitness and conditioning to ensure his squad can outwork foes. He wants the Barrage to view themselves as underdogs who succeed through sheer determination and heart. It’s an attitude tailored for Philadelphia’s diehard lacrosse community.
To complement their young nucleus, the Barrage brought in some veteran additions who fit the Philly mold. acquisitions like midfielders Kyle Marr and Matt Moore provide stability while attackman Blaze Riorden has a knack for gritty goals. These vets mesh nicely with incumbents like Sunday and Morrill.
Anchoring it all is goalie Zac Kittner, whose reaction time and aggressiveness key the defense. Kittner’s ability to spark fast breaks with crisp outlet passes generate the transition chances this offense feasts on.
With a year of experience under their belt, the Barrage expect their sophomores to take big leaps in 2023. Their upside and athleticism remains apparent. Now it’s about harnessing that potential into steadier execution for four full quarters.

Denver Outlaws – Mile High Magic
The Denver Outlaws have been one of Major League Lacrosse’s model franchises since joining the league in 2006. Playing in the lacrosse hotbed of Denver, the Outlaws continually post winning seasons and set attendance records. While the Outlaws struggled to an uncharacteristic 5-9 record in 2022, a playoff berth showed this team’s resilience. With newly acquired offensive weapons like Grant Ament and Connor Fields joining returners like Eric Law and Jack Rowlett, Denver’s high-flying offense expects to return to form. Backed by the stellar goaltending of Alex Ready and Coach Tony Seaman’s leadership, the Outlaws hope mile high magic propels them back into championship contention.
Chesapeake Bayhawks – Perennial Playoff Power
Since entering Major League Lacrosse in 2002, the Chesapeake Bayhawks have been a model of excellence. The Bayhawks impressive six MLL championships is a league record, including three titles since 2012. Chesapeake boasts arguably the league’s stingiest defense led by veterans Nick Manis, CJ Costabile, and Garrett Epple. With offensive playmakers like Lyle Thompson and Andrew Kew returning, plus rookie Brett Niedbala, the Bayhawks expect to be right back competing for another championship.
Atlanta Waterdogs – Poised for a Breakthrough
In just their second Major League Lacrosse season, the Atlanta Waterdogs have quickly become a rising force. The Waterdogs impressed with a 9-5 expansion season in 2022, but fizzled with a one-and-done playoff exit. Hungry for more in 2023, Atlanta added offensive firepower like Chris Gray, Bryan Costabile, and Jeff Teat to an already stacked lineup. Midwest transplants Randy Staats, Bryan Cole, and Justin Anderson hope to build on strong inaugural seasons. With the league’s top faceoff man Alex Woodall, experienced coaches, and growing local support, the Waterdogs are poised for a big breakthrough.
New York Lizards – Seeking Playoff Success
As one of Major League Lacrosse’s flagship franchises, the pressure is always on the New York Lizards to contend for a championship. The Lizards have endured three straight seasons of being good, but not good enough, posting .500 records and quick playoff exits. Looking to finally get over the hump in 2023, New York added offensive firepower like Connor Kirst, Dylan Molloy, and Joe Nardella through the draft and expansion process. Chesapeake Bayhawks – The Team to Beat
With six championships and a league-best nine consecutive playoff appearances, the Chesapeake Bayhawks remain Major League Lacrosse’s gold standard franchise. Despite a slight step back in 2022 finishing 7-7, the Bayhawks quickly reloaded adding phenom Brett Niedbala through the draft. Chesapeake still boasts arguably the league’s top defense led by rock solid veterans. With offensive playmakers like Lyle Thompson returning after leading the team in points last season, Chesapeake expects to be right back contending for another title. The road to the championship still runs through the Bayhawks.
Atlanta Waterdogs – Rising Stars
After an impressive 9-5 debut season in Major League Lacrosse, the Atlanta Waterdogs have gone from expansion club to rising stars. Building on that success, Atlanta added more offensive talent like Chris Gray and Bryan Costabile to an already potent lineup. Faceoff dominator Alex Woodall leads the league’s top FOGO unit, while Randy Staats and Justin Anderson headline the attack. With excellent coaching and budding local support, the Waterdogs are poised to take the next step and establish themselves as perennial contenders in 2023.
New York Lizards – Seeking Playoff Fortune
The New York Lizards are one of Major League Lacrosse’s most popular franchises, but have struggled turning regular season success into playoff fortune recently. After three straight seasons of .500 records and early postseason exits, the Lizards hope additions like Grant Ament, Dylan Molloy and Connor Kirst can get them over the hump. With athleticism across the field and depth at every position, New York boasts one of the most talented rosters top to bottom. Ohio Machine – Midwestern Grit And Determination
With the 2023 Major League Lacrosse season right around the corner, lacrosse fans are eagerly anticipating which teams will rise to the top this year. One squad that should not be overlooked is the Ohio Machine. Hailing from the Midwest, this scrappy team embodies the grit and determination stereotypical of the region. They may not have the flashiness or pedigree of some Coastal squads, but make no mistake – the Machine are contenders.
The Machine have quietly built a solid foundation over the past few years. They boast a stout defense anchored by close defender Kyle Hartzell, one of the premier shutdown men in the MLL. Hartzell is adept at neutralizing opponents’ top offensive weapons. And he’s flanked by long stick midfielder Matt Hoffman, who scoops up ground balls with abandon. Together, they make scoring against Ohio a tall task.
Offensively, the Machine are led by the three-headed monster of attackmen Marcus Holman, Steele Stanwick, and Kyle Harrison. Holman is the finisher, utilizing his strength and quickness to beat defenders. Stanwick is the facilitator, displaying excellent vision and passing skills to set up his teammates. And Harrison is the creator, dodging against defenders and initiating offense from up top or on the wing.
With this balanced offense and stifling defense, Ohio has the pieces in place to make a run. And they are comfortable playing the underdog role, relishing the chance to knock off more vaunted foes. The Machine will be a dangerous draw this postseason, ready to grind out tough victories.
Chesapeake Bayhawks – Perennial Powers
No list of championship contenders is complete without mentioning the Chesapeake Bayhawks. One of the most consistently excellent franchises in Major League Lacrosse history, the Bayhawks are perpetually in the mix to hoist the Steinfeld Trophy.
The foundation of Chesapeake’s success lies in their wealth of offensive firepower. Lyle Thompson headlines this unit as one of the most electrifying players in lacrosse. His insane stick skills, blinding speed, and nose for the goal strike fear into the hearts of defenders league-wide. He’s joined on attack by veterans Matt Danowski and Andrew Kew, who provide a steadying presence.
In the midfield, faceoff maestro Stephen Robarge gives the Bayhawks possession after possession to fuel their high-octane offense. And Mark Glicini is an absolute bulldog, out-hustling opponents between the lines. With this embarrassment of offensive riches, Chesapeake can light up the scoreboard on any given night.
Of course, defense wins championships as well. And the Bayhawks have the personnel on the back end to complement their snipers up front. Jesse Bernhardt, a rock-solid close defender, can neutralize opposing attackmen. And veteran goalie Niko Amato brings consistency between the pipes. This balanced roster makes Chesapeake a nightmare matchup.
Denver Outlaws – Perennial Contenders
Out West, the Denver Outlaws remain a squad to be reckoned with. They have qualified for the playoffs every single season in franchise history, a mark of their consistency of excellence. And with largely the same core in place, expect Denver to be in the championship hunt once again.
Eric Law is the straw that stirs the drink for the Outlaw offense, displaying a do-it-all skillset from up top. He’s comfortable as a passer or finisher, dodging against defenders or shooting on the run. Chris Aslanian provides a hulking midfield presence, overpowering opponents en route to the cage. And Zed Williams is a human highlight reel, capable of scoring in jaw-dropping fashion.
On defense, Eli Gobrecht is the definition of a lockdown cover man, blanketing opponents with his length and athleticism. He’s flanked by veteran Matt Bocklet, who scoops up ground balls and kick-starts the transition game. Together, they make scoring goals against Denver an arduous task.
Of course, one can’t discuss the Outlaws without mentioning faceoff ace Stephen Robbins. Owning a faceoff win percentage north of .600 over his career, Robbins virtually guarantees Denver extra possessions and offensive opportunities. This gives the Outlaws a crucial edge in ball control.
With the continuity of their roster and coaching staff, expect the Outlaws to remain near the top of the MLL standings this season. Their consistency and balance make them a safe bet to be playing deep into August once again.
New York Lizards – Hungry for a Championship
Rounding out this preview of top contenders are the New York Lizards. One of Major League Lacrosse’s flagship franchises, the Lizards have always been a popular draw. But they have not captured a championship since 2001, a drought their passionate fanbase is hungry to end.
The Lizards boast no shortage of talent, particularly on the offensive end. Rob Pannell is still an elite attackman, able to break down defenses with his dodging ability or pick them apart with pinpoint passing. And Joe Walters provides a dynamic complement, utilizing his speed and quickness to find seams in the defense.
In the midfield, Paul Rabil remains a force, overpowering opponents with brute physicality and a cannon shot clocked over 100 mph. He’s joined by Drew Snider, an athletic do-it-all presence dangerous in transition. Together, they give New York playmakers all over the field.
Of course, defense is critical for any championship contender as well. Close defender Greg Gurenlian – also known as the top faceoff specialist in MLL history – provides lockdown coverage against opposition attackmen. And the Lizards boast a stellar last line of defense in veteran goalie Drew Adams, about as reliable as they come between the pipes.
Bringing back largely the same deep and talented roster, expectations are high for the Lizards to break their long title drought in 2023. Their offensive firepower and gritty defense position New York as bonafide contenders this season.
The 2023 Major League Lacrosse season figures to be tightly contested, with these perennial powers and other emerging squads vying for the Steinfeld Trophy. But keep an eye on the Ohio Machine’s grit, the Chesapeake Bayhawks’ pedigree, the Denver Outlaws’ consistency, and the New York Lizards’ hunger as the teams to beat. If you’re a lacrosse fan, strap in for what promises to be an exciting MLL campaign!
Rochester Rattlers – Upstate New York Tenacity
The 2023 Major League Lacrosse season is fast approaching, and fans are eager to see which teams emerge as top championship contenders. One squad expected to be in the mix hails from upstate New York – the Rochester Rattlers. This gritty group embodies the toughness and resolve associated with western New York, making them a team no one will want to face.
Rochester’s calling card is their suffocating defense. Anchored by close defenders John Ranagan and Luke Duprey, this unit makes life miserable for opposing offenses. Ranagan is excellent at shutting off dodgers’ hands and steering them away from the cage. Duprey scoops up ground balls with reckless abandon, igniting transition opportunities going the other way. Together, they set the tone for Rochester’s physical, clampdown defense.
Long stick midfielder Tyler Warner adds to that stifling defense, covering the entire field with his active stick and feet. He harasses ball carriers mercilessly and is a demon on the ride. Meanwhile, veteran netminder John Galloway provides a steady last line of defense, making critical saves at key moments. This end-to-end defensive unit means very few goals come easy against the Rattlers.
Of course, championship teams need scoring punch too. Rochester’s offense provides just that, led by the three-headed attack monster of Justin Turri, Dan Bucaro, and Chris Cloutier. Turri is an excellent feeder, displaying vision to find open cutters. Bucaro utilizes a blistering shot to pepper the net. And Cloutier is the finisher, possessing deceiving quickness to beat his man. Together, they give the Rattlers the balance needed to beat defenses multiple ways.
In the midfield, Joe Walters provides speed and athleticism in transition, pushing pace and tiring out opponents. Faceoff specialist Doug Russell gives Rochester crucial extra possessions to fuel their offense. Anchored by their tenacious defense and multidimensional scorers, the Rattlers have the pieces in place to win the close, grinding games that define postseason lacrosse.
Atlanta Blaze – Southern Scorchers
One rising squad that could shake up the league in 2023 is the Atlanta Blaze. After some growing pains early on, Atlanta has steadily improved and established themselves as an offensive juggernaut. Teams who take them lightly risk getting torched by these southern scorchers.
The calling card of this Blaze team is their overwhelming offensive firepower. Attackman Lyle Thompson is the headliner, utilizing his insane ball skills and change of pace to make defenders look foolish. Randy Staats provides a dynamic complement, employing a sneaky and crafty style to find seams in defenses. And veteran Eric Lusby rounds out the unit, boasting a rocket shot capable of beating goalies from way outside.
In the midfield, Bryan Cole uses his speed and shiftiness to manufacture offense, both scoring himself and setting up teammates. At the faceoff X, Graham Gill dominates possessions, allowing the Blaze offense ample opportunities to go to work. This embarrassment of offensive riches allows Atlanta to light up the scoreboard on any given night.
Make no mistake though – the Blaze aren’t just an offensive-minded squad. They boast talent on the defensive end as well, led by lockdown coverman Matt Dunn. Dunn is excellent at neutralizing opponents’ top scoring threats. And veteran netminder Adam Ghitelman brings stability in cage, making key saves when called upon. This balance makes Atlanta dangerous.
Boston Cannons – Beantown Brawlers
Of course, no discussion of top contenders is complete without mentioning the Boston Cannons. One of Major League Lacrosse’s oldest and most storied franchises, the Cannons embody the toughness and physicality associated with Beantown sports teams.
The Cannons roster is littered with stars, particularly on the offensive end. Attackman Mark Cockerton provides a deft shooting touch, capable of blistering corners with laser shots. Lyle Thompson is a human highlight reel, dazzling with his ball-handling wizardry. And veteran Will Manny is crafty and adept at finishing in tight spaces around the crease.
In the midfield, faceoff dominator Brent Adams gives Boston possessions in bunches, fueling their high-octane offense. And Bryce Wasserman is an absolute horse, bullying defenders with his size and power. With athleticism and playmaking ability across the field, this Cannons squad can light up the scoreboard.
Of course, Boston’s physical defense is a staple as well. Led by close defender Brodie Merrill and pole midfielder Kyle Sweeney, this unit makes opponents work for every inch and wear down over four quarters. The Cannons’ combination of offensive potency and in-your-face defense makes them a frightening matchup.
With their outstanding pedigree and mix of veterans and young talent, expect Beantown’s brawlers to be right in the thick of the championship hunt this MLL season. The path to the Steinfeld Trophy likely goes through Boston.
The 2023 Major League Lacrosse campaign is shaping up to be a thriller, with established powers and rising challengers gunning for the title. But keep an eye on the Rochester Rattlers’ grit, the Atlanta Blaze’s firepower, and the Boston Cannons’ brawn as top contenders. Strap in for what promises to be an intense and entertaining lacrosse season!
Charlotte Hounds – Spearheading Carolina Lacrosse
Lacrosse fever is sweeping through the Carolinas, and the team leading the charge is the Charlotte Hounds. One of Major League Lacrosse’s newer franchises, the Hounds have quickly cultivated an avid fanbase hungry to see a championship brought to the region. With a balanced roster featuring veteran leaders and emerging young talent, Charlotte may be ready to deliver on that goal in 2023.
The anchor of the Hounds squad is the attacking trio of Lyle Thompson, Josh Byrne, and Joe Nardella. Thompson is a wizard with the ball in his stick, dazzling defenders with his array of moves. Byrne provides a well-rounded scoring threat capable both off the dodge or shooting on the run. And Nardella is an excellent facilitator who initiates offense and finds open cutters.
This multipronged attack is complemented by athletic midfielders like Jake Bernhardt, who excels in transition. Faceoff specialist Tim Fallon gives the Hounds crucial extra possessions as well. Together, they form an offense with playmakers at every position, able to stress defenses in myriad ways.
Of course, Charlotte’s defense is no slouch either. Close defender Mike Manley is excellent at neutralizing opponents’ top attack threats with his length and footwork. Long stick midfielder Ryan Flanagan covers ground relentlessly between the lines, pressuring ball carriers. And veteran goalie Adam Ghitelman brings stability in net, having seen his share of high leverage situations before.
With this balance of offensive firepower and defensive steadiness, the Hounds are primed to take the next step towards contending for their first Steinfeld Trophy. And bringing lacrosse prominence to a region that loves the sport would only turbocharge Charlotte’s rise.
New York Lizards – Ending the Drought
The New York Lizards are one of Major League Lacrosse’s most prominent franchises, but they have not hoisted the championship trophy since way back in 2001. For one of the league’s flagship teams, this lengthy title drought sticks out like a sore thumb. Expect the Lizards to be on a mission in 2023 to finally return to lacrosse glory.
New York’s roster is loaded with the talent to end that drought. Offensively, Rob Pannell remains of the best attackmen in the sport, a triple-threat who can dodge, feed, or shoot with precision. Joe Walters provides speed and athleticism as his running mate. And Paul Rabil is an absolute bull in the midfield, imposing his will on opponents.
On the other end, lockdown defender Greg Gurenlian, a faceoff legend, can neutralize opponents’ top scoring options. Matt Dunn patrols the middle of the field with aggression. And Drew Adams provides reliability in net. With difference-makers across the field, this Lizards squad is primed for a big season.
Of course, talent only takes you so far. For the Lizards to break through, they’ll need to come together and develop the chemistry and trust needed to prevail in crunch time. If they can transcend their on-paper roster and forge a true team identity, this may finally be the year New York gets over the hump.
Chesapeake Bayhawks – Annual Contenders
Another perennial power that expects to be in championship contention is the Chesapeake Bayhawks. A model of consistency spanning nearly two decades, Chesapeake seems to always find themselves playing for the Steinfeld Trophy by season’s end.
The fulcrum of the Bayhawks offense is midfield scorer Lyle Thompson, arguably the best overall player in Major League Lacrosse. His otherworldly stick skills and acceleration give defenders fits and energize his team. Attackmen Matt Danwoski and Andrew Kew provide steady production and leadership as well.
Defensively, Chesapeake is anchored by close defender Jesse Bernhardt. A rock who gobbles up ground balls and communicating calls, Bernhardt is adept at neutralizing top attackmen. And veteran goalie Brian Phipps has seen it all after years in MLL, making clutch saves when called upon.
Of course, Chesapeake also boasts excellent faceoff specialists in Stephen Robarge and Kenny Massa. Winning possessions is critical, and this duo delivers that in spades. The Bayhawks’ depth, balance and championship pedigree make them a threat once again.
Chesapeake knows what it takes to make playoff runs and win titles. Expect their veteran poise and lacrosse IQ to power them through tight postseason games. Counting out the Bayhawks is never wise – this savvy squad should be right back contending in 2023.
The 2023 Major League Lacrosse season is shaping up to be a dandy, with established contenders and rising upstarts battling for supremacy. But don’t sleep on the Charlotte Hounds’ balanced roster, the New York Lizards’ title pursuit, or the Chesapeake Bayhawks’ championship pedigree. Keep an eye on these squads when the action heats up this summer!
Cannons LC – Canadian Expansion Team
Major League Lacrosse (MLL) has seen tremendous growth over the past decade, transforming from a fledgling professional league into a thriving organization with over 200 players across 8 U.S.-based franchises. However, MLL has yet to expand into Canada, despite lacrosse’s rich history north of the border. Many believe that 2023 could finally be the year an MLL expansion team comes to Canada.
Here are some of the top contenders for a Canadian MLL expansion team in 2023:
Toronto Cannons LC
Toronto is arguably the most likely destination for Canada’s first MLL team. As the 4th largest city in North America, Toronto has a huge population and plenty of lacrosse fans to draw from. The city already has experience hosting professional lacrosse with the NLL’s Toronto Rock, who have won 6 league championships since their founding in 1998.
The Toronto Cannons LC would play out of BMO Field, which has a capacity of 30,000 for lacrosse games. With the Toronto Rock averaging over 15,000 fans per game, its clear there is a substantial lacrosse fanbase in the city. The Cannons would surely aim to capitalize on this interest and establish themselves as Toronto’s summertime pro lacrosse team.
In terms of roster construction, the Cannons LC would likely target many of the 50+ Canadian players currently in MLL. Going after big name veterans like Brodie Merrill, Curtis Dickson and Cody Jamieson could give the Toronto franchise plenty of star power in their inaugural season.
Vancouver Warriors LC
Much like Toronto, Vancouver also boasts an NLL team in the Vancouver Warriors with an established lacrosse fan following. Bringing an MLL franchise to Vancouver would further tap into British Columbia’s passion for the sport.
The Warriors LC would play at BC Place, which can be configured to hold around 20,000 fans for lacrosse. The Vancouver Warriors averaged over 10,000 per game in 2019, demonstrating the region’s ability to pack a venue when the product on the floor is strong.
led by the likes of veteran Rhys Duch and rising young stars like Justin Salt and Connor Robinson. The Warriors LC would aim to put together a competitive squad from the get-go and emulate the success of their NLL counterparts.
Calgary Cannons LC
Beyond Toronto and Vancouver, Calgary emerges as the next most viable market for an MLL expansion team. Calgary is one of Canada’s fastest growing cities with over 1.3 million residents, many of whom are transplants from back East where lacrosse has deep roots.
The Calgary Cannons LC would call McMahon Stadium home. While not an indoor venue, McMahon could be configured to around 25,000 seats for lacrosse. There is definitely an appetite for pro sports in Calgary during the summer months when the NHL and CFL are in their offseasons.
Calgary has already proven it can support lacrosse, with the NLL’s Roughnecks averaging over 11,000 fans per game. The Cannons LC would look to capitalize on this existing fanbase while tapping into the youth and minor-pro lacrosse scene in Alberta.
Halifax Privateers LC
On the East Coast, Halifax has emerged as a potential landing spot for an MLL expansion team. Halifax is home to over 400,000 residents and has a growing sports scene with the QMJHL’s Mooseheads being the city’s crown jewel franchise.
The Privateers LC would play at Scotiabank Centre which can be reconfigured to hold around 10,000 fans for lacrosse. Halifax has experience hosting major lacrosse events like the FIL World Indoor Lacrosse Championship in 2015.
Nova Scotia is known for producing elite box lacrosse talent like Sid Smith, Cody Jamieson and Mark Matthews. The Privateers LC would aim to tap into this player pool and develop a young, exciting squad peppered with some veterans to lead the charge.
Quebec Rebelles LC
The province of Quebec is known for fiercely supporting its local sports teams. Bringing an MLL expansion franchise to Quebec City or Montreal could tap into this passionate fanbase.
The Rebelles would likely play out of the Videotron Centre in Quebec City, which can hold around 18,000 fans for lacrosse. Alternatively, Montreal’s Bell Centre could host around 21,000 if the team opted to locate in the province’s largest city.
Quebec has produced legends like John Grant Jr., Gary Gait andKevin Crowley. The Rebelles LC would make it a priority to recruit locally-developed talent while bringing in some big name Americans to raise the team’s profile.
The Quebec market presents some challenges due to the predominance of French. But a marketing campaign tailored to francophone fans could see the Rebelles develop an avid supporter base.
While nothing is confirmed yet, the pieces seem to be falling into place for a Canadian MLL expansion team soon. The league has made it clear they aim to grow into new markets, making Canada a logical next step. If approved, a team like the Toronto Cannons LC could take the field as early as 2023, bringing professional outdoor lacrosse to our neighbors up North for the first time.
Archers LC – California Coast Competitors
Major League Lacrosse has experienced monumental growth over the past ten years, morphing from a small startup league into a fully developed professional organization with over 200 of the sport’s elite players across 8 franchises stationed in the eastern and central United States. However, the western half of the country remains untouched by MLL, with no teams currently located west of Denver. Many lacrosse insiders think 2023 could be the year MLL finally expands out west with one or more franchises in California.
Here are some of the top contenders for a California MLL expansion team in 2023:
San Francisco Archers LC
San Francisco has emerged as a frontrunner for California’s first MLL team. As a major global city, San Francisco provides access to one of the largest media markets and populations in the U.S. at over 4 million people. The City by the Bay has a growing lacrosse scene led by the presence of Division 1 NCAA programs like Stanford and the University of San Francisco.
The Archers would likely call Oracle Park home. While mainly used for MLB’s Giants, its downtown location and picturesque backdrop make it a compelling venue. Oracle Park can be configured to hold around 20,000 fans for lacrosse games.
In terms of personnel, the Archers LC would surely make a run at landing Bay Area lacrosse legends like Brodie Merrill, Brendan Mundorf and Ben Rubeor. Peppering the roster with some young local talent would also help grow the team’s fanbase.
Los Angeles Legion LC
Down south, Los Angeles stands out as an enticing expansion market for MLL. The City of Angels provides access to the largest population of any metro area in the U.S. at 13 million. LA has successfully supported pro lacrosse in the past with the NLL’s Anaheim Storm and LA Lazers.
The Legion would likely play at Dignity Health Sports Park. Home to LA Galaxy of Major League Soccer, it can be configured to hold around 27,000 fans for lacrosse. The Legion would aim to capitalize on the area’s developed youth lacrosse scene and draw in casual fans seeking a new summertime sport to follow.
Signing players with name recognition like Marcus Holman, Kyle Harrison and Ned Crotty would give the team legitimacy right off the bat. Mixing in some talented players developed through the SoCal lacrosse pipeline would further endear them to local fans.
San Diego Swarm LC
Further south, San Diego represents the southernmost major metro market in California. With over 3 million residents and rising, it’s one of the fastest growing cities in the U.S. San Diego is home to many transplants from lacrosse hotbeds in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
The Swarm LC would play at Snapdragon Stadium, which can accommodate around 35,000 spectators configured for lacrosse. There is definitely an appetite for pro sports during the MLB Padres’ offseason. Signing regional standouts like reigning Tewaaraton Award winner Chris Gray could ignite interest.
The San Diego area has seen lacrosse explode in popularity at the high school and youth level over the past decade. Leveraging this surging participation and breeding a new generation of local fans would be crucial for the Swarm’s success.
Orange County Archers LC
Lastly, Orange County emerges as a potential landing spot given its history of lacrosse success. With 3 million residents of its own, OC is home to powerhouse college programs like Chapman University and the booming athletic scene of Irvine.
The Archers LC would likely play at the Honda Center in Anaheim. Home of the NHL’s Ducks, it can accommodate around 18,000 fans for lacrosse games. Orange County is familiar with pro lacrosse, having previously hosted the Anaheim Storm and LA Lazers of the NLL.
Capitalizing on OC’s experienced youth and high school lacrosse scene would help the Archers LC build a new generation of fans. Bringing aboard current stars who developed locally like Connor Farrell could quickly make them fan favorites.
While concrete expansion plans are not yet announced, MLL moving out west seems imminent. A club like the San Francisco Archers LC would plant the league’s flag on the West Coast and usher in an exciting new era of growth for pro lacrosse.
Atlas LC – Bringing Boxla Flair To Field Lacrosse
Major League Lacrosse has long been dominated by players coming through the NCAA collegiate ranks into the pro game. However, there is a growing trend of top NLL players deciding to test their skills in field lacrosse by joining MLL teams.
The uptempo boxla game often translates well to the more wide open field style of MLL lacrosse. A number of NLL stars have already made the transition in recent years, bringing some added flair and excitement to the league. This trend seems poised to continue in 2023, with several big names potentially making the jump.
Here are a few NLL superstars who could bring some boxla magic to MLL with expansion team Atlas LC in 2023:
Dane Dobbie
Arguably the best overall lacrosse player on the planet right now, Dobbie would bring some unprecedented star power to MLL. His off-ball movement and shooting ability are unmatched, making him a threat to score from anywhere inside 20 yards. Coming off a record-setting 75 point season in 2022, his addition would make Atlas an instant contender.
Shawn Evans
One of the NLL’s all-time scorers, Evans knows how to create offense. His elite vision and passing skills allow him to thread needles through tight lanes to find open teammates. Evans also uses shifty dodges and clever off-ball cuts to get open for his patented overhand shot. He’d bring some masterful ball-movement and scoring punch to Atlas LC.
Callum Crawford
Crawford has been one of the NLL’s top scorers over the past decade, posting staggering goal totals year after year. His combination of power and finesse around the net allows him to finish shots in tight spaces. Crawford excels at using his big 6’6″ frame to establish position down low. His size and savvy inside would give Atlas a formidable weapon.
Dan Dawson
One of the most creative offensive minds lacrosse has ever seen, Dawson would provide a true field general for Atlas LC. He has elite vision on the pass and makes pinpoint feeds for easy goals. Dawson also utilizes unorthodox angles and sidearm shots to keep goalies guessing. His field lacrosse experience with the former Detroit Titans makes this transition easy.
Kyle Buchanan
A young, ascending star, Buchanan’s athleticism and versatility would be an asset. He can play attack or midfield and excels at dodging, shooting and setting up teammates. His time playing NCAA lacrosse at Robert Morris helps adapt his game to the nuances of the field. Buchanan could become a centerpiece for Atlas.
While these players likely won’t all join MLL at once, even adding 1-2 stars of this caliber would bring some boxla flair to Atlas LC. Their uncanny scoring touch, passing vision and highlight reel athleticism would amp up the excitement in MLL. This trend seems far from over, so look for more NLL talent to make the transition to field lacrosse in the years to come.
Waterdogs LC – Reigniting Maryland Lacrosse Passion
Major League Lacrosse was founded over 20 years ago with deep roots in Maryland, considered the hotbed of lacrosse. However, there are currently no MLL franchises located in the state widely regarded as the epicenter of the sport. Many believe an expansion team in Maryland could reignite passion and bring pro lacrosse back to its ancestral home.
Here’s a look at how a new team like the Chesapeake Waterdogs LC could excite local fans in 2023:
Tapping into Maryland Lacrosse Culture
Maryland is synonymous with lacrosse excellence and passion. Youth, high school, and college programs in the state consistently rank among the nation’s best. Stars like Kyle Harrison, Mark Millon, and John Tillman developed their games locally before achieving greatness.
The Waterdogs would tap directly into this grassroots lacrosse culture and local pride. Marketing the team as “Maryland’s Pro Lacrosse Team” would establish an instant connection with homegrown fans.
Access to Local Talent
Maryland produces a disproportionate share of D1 lacrosse talent each year. Leveraging this deep pool of local players would give the Waterdogs LC an instant infusion of skill.
Going after hometown heroes like Niko Amato, Mike Chanenchuk, and Pat Spencer could quickly turn them into fan favorites. Developing other stars with Maryland ties would further connect with local supporters.
Venue Choice
Playing at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis would be a logical venue choice. Its location in a lacrosse crazed region and capacity of around 30,000 make it perfectly suited to host MLL.
The atmosphere of games right in the heart of lacrosse country would be unmatched. Fans would relish watching pro games in their backyard after years without a local team.
Regional Rivalries
Situating in Maryland would spark some exciting regional rivalries for the Waterdogs LC. Contests against DC’s Chrome LC and Philadelphia’s Barrage LC would take on added intensity given local bragging rights.
These derby matchups tend to ignite passion in fans. The on-field competition would be fierce and hard-hitting between players familiar with one another from youth and college.
Helping Grow The Game
Placing a team back in the sport’s ancestral home would also help further expand lacrosse’s reach. The Waterdogs LC would have a responsibility to promote growth of the game at local schools and youth programs.
Serving as an ambassador for lacrosse and providing coaching clinics/appearances would give back to the community. It would help deepen their connection as Maryland’s pro lacrosse team.
After years away, bringing pro lacrosse back to Maryland could light a spark under local fans. The Chesapeake Waterdogs LC seem poised to reignite passion for the game in 2023 and beyond.
